Andy Mann Has Perfected the Craft of Filming Sharks

Andy Mann is an adventurer who just-so-happens to visually document everything he does. His exploits include diving with sharks, expeditions in the Arctic and world-renowned climbs, which means he is able to capture moments that no one else in the world can.

Mann’s currently part of a five-year project set in the Bahamas to study and ultimately protect oceanic whitetip sharks. We chatted with the filmmaker about his approach to diving, capturing underwater images and the importance of trusting your gear.

Q:

How did your interest in adventure documentation come about?

A:

When I first set down this path of documentary adventure and our changing oceans I was obsessed with the history of exploration. Origins in adventure are rooted deeply in exploring the unknown and the pure mystery of it. Without mystery, there is no adventure. To this day, I’ll immerse myself in old literature on expeditions by those that explored these places before me.

Q:

What has this project been like?

A:

Working with the oceanic whitetip sharks off Cat Island is a five-year project, working with scientists to tag and understand this relatively unknown species of shark. We’ll spend hours in the water observing them before targeting pregnant female sharks to safely apply a satellite tracking device to hopefully learn where they go to give birth. The pupping grounds are ultimately the areas we want to protect.

Q:

What sort of preparation goes into a dive before you actually get underwater?

A:

Before a day of free-diving into the depths, I start my preparations early. I allow myself to get out any expectations or any hopes and fears I may have leading into it. I just relax, go into technical nerd mode with my gear and enjoy the experience. I do my best work when I move slow and have fun.

Q:

What goes through your head when you’re face-to-face with a shark?

A:

There is a short learning curve to being in the water with sharks. You have to adjust to their behavior and observe with respect. I trust sharks very much and I trust my judgment. If I notice anything small, like a sudden change in behavior in the shark, I’ll adjust instantly or I’ll get out of the water.

Q:

How does trusting your equipment factor into being underwater?

A:

Trusting my equipment is paramount to my job as an underwater photographer. I simply cannot give the integrity of my gear a second thought once I enter the water. I’m focused on my breath, the sharks and making a memorable image. Same goes with my watch, my scuba tank and right up to my mask.

Q:

Does your concept of time change at all when you’re underwater?

A:

The concept of time is the reason to approach underwater wildlife encounters on a breath hold. I consider anything over one minute a good dive in the deep blue ocean with sharks. Everything goes quiet: no voices, no noise, just you and 99-percent of the earth by volume, water.

The Next Act for G-SHOCK’s Premium Line

When G-SHOCK developed the MT-G luxury line back in 2013, it was an enterprising direction for the brand but one that fell naturally into its expansion over the years — it stepped into the premium market with Metal-Twisted G-SHOCK, which by no small feat still offered the definitive G-SHOCK toughness. Five years later, that subset of G-SHOCK is still evolving.

Earlier this year at Baselworld, G-SHOCK unveiled the next iteration of the MT-G men’s luxury line: the MTGB1000-1A. It marks an elevation — it’s the first MT-G timepiece to boast Bluetooth capabilities and BLE time-sync.

The MTGB1000-1A connects to a time server via the G-SHOCK Connected smartphone app or radio wave time-calibration signals — keeping it incredibly accurate. The Bluetooth connected app capabilities enable a user to set the world time and alarms straight from your smartphone. The app also collects and analyzes usage data from the timepiece to keep the user informed of things like when it needs to be charged.

That’s not all though, as it also underwent a bit of a redesign that transforms the look for the MT-G line. Three components have gotten upgrades on the MTGB1000-1A: a slimmer case, a new band structure and a new core guard box frame.

Slimming down any watch isn’t typically what G-SHOCK does. But in its latest design of the MT-G family, G-SHOCK has managed to make the watch slimmer by 1.11mm with a 1.58mm smaller case depth. This sleek profile complements the premium metallic case finish for a striking look. A highly abrasion-resistant sapphire crystal helps ensure clear visibility and that the watch can still take a beating.

And the new band structure for the MTGB1000-1A is a modification for the MT-G line as well. With the previous MT-G watches known for their stainless steel bands, this one is composed of urethane and fine resin, affixed to one another by screws, which are then securely fastened to the case with metal parts.

Sophistication and toughness are a tough balancing act. In this latest design, G-SHOCK has managed to refine the MT-G line even more while keeping the technology that it has become known for: water resistance, a dual dial world time (up to 300 cities are selectable within the app), a full auto Super Illuminator LED light, a stopwatch, countdown timer and more. And the classic round face and front screws are a reminder that it might be an updated look, but you’re still getting the tried-and-true premium G-SHOCK.

Moving the needle on style and technology — all while keeping its core ethos intact — is exactly what’s expected after 35+ years from G-SHOCK, and it’s exactly what the MTGB1000-1A brings to the table.

Ten Products to Upgrade Your Outdoor Entertaining

If you’re lucky, you have a backyard, a deck, a rooftop, maybe a balcony. Even if not, maybe you have a fire escape — and if all else fails, at least you have windows that open. Regardless, summer is a really nice time to invite company over. And while it can be tempting to grab a set of paper plates for easy cleanup, you can do better. There’s no reason why your crisp, white dishes and handsome linens should be kept strictly indoors. Outdoor dining can be just as elevated as the meals set inside your kitchen. Even if you’re just diving into a cheese plate and a few bottles of rosé, you can keep it polished. We’ve partnered with Snowe to make a list of ten things that will improve your summer entertaining.

Flatware

Flatware is best kept classic and these Italian stainless steel pieces are just that. They’re not going out of style any time soon and since this premium 18/10 steel resists stains and rust, they’ll look good throughout their very long life.

Placemats

Perfect for outdoor dining, these Belgian flax linen placemats have a teflon and acrylic coating making them easy to wipe clean. They are the superlative upgrade to the ubiquitous vinyl tablecloth.

Dinner Plates

Made in Portugal, these Limoges porcelain plates are designed to be super durable, ultra-smooth and resistant to cracks and stains. They’re even lightweight and oven safe.

Chef’s Towel

These absolutely classic towels are made from 100% washed Belgian linen, spun in Italy. The material is quick drying and strong — getting softer and better with age. Whether you’d opt for red, blue or natural grey, they’re timeless. Equipped with a loop and tie, these can also double as a half-apron.

End-Grain Cutting Board

The self-healing quality of this sustainable Black Walnut end-grain cutting board may be its best feature. It’s also made in the USA, has hand rests on each end on the chopping side and can easily be used on the alternative side to double as a serving board (as shown above).

Cheese Board Set

It’s always nice to get the whole package in one purchase. This is an easy one: an American-made walnut cheese board and a set of three-piece Italian-made stainless steel cheese knives.

White Wine Glasses

The perfect wine glass has a delicate feel and is anything but. This set of stemware is just that. Each is made from a single seamless pieces of crystallized glass and has a titanium-reinforced stem so it is extra sturdy.

Short Tumblers

These tumblers, made of Italian lead-free crystallized glass, are weighted at the bottom — designed for a classic negroni or a simple round of ice teas — and are, again, durable (tough enough that you won’t mind taking them on the patio).

Carafe

Every dinner party should have a simple, elegant carafe on the table. No host should be running back into the kitchen to constantly be refreshing the drinks. Sit back, relax and keep your guests hydrated. Pro tip: grab two and use your spare as a vase. They’re dishwasher safe so you can go wild.

Ice Bucket

It’s chilled wine season. And truth be told, no one likes their rosé, light red or crisp white at room temperature in the summer. This tulip shaped ice bucket will most certainly do the trick and look good doing it. Made of Premium 18/10 Italian stainless steel, it also resists stains and rust.

Today in Gear: Omega’s Latest Speedmaster, a Customized Ducati Scrambler and More

We’ve made some new adjustments to Today in Gear, including a new publishing time of 4 p.m. in order to capture all the day’s new stories. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Special dietary needs, especially when adhering to a strict meal management fitness plan, can make being on-the-go difficult. Prepared meals require bringing along multiple food containers for the day — on top of your EDC stuff.

This is the very problem Six Pack Fitness aimed to solve with their Expedition Backpack. A removable meal core offers stealthy built-in container storage for three leak-proof sure seal 20oz. meal prep containers (which come included with the bag). The insulated modular core system and anti-condensation side gussets ensure that the Expedition Backpack can keep up to three meals fresh and cool for eight hours. It also sports an inner lining compartment for laptops and tablets up to 15-inches and an extra large main compartment that can hold your workout clothing and gear.

If your previous excuses for not adhering to that fitness plan sounded something like, “But how I am going to take these meals with me every day?” then you can now leave your excuses at home.

G.H. Bass & Co. Logan Flat Strap Weejuns
Save 25%: 82 years ago, Maine-based G.H. Bass and Co. designed a loafer that became a benchmark for men’s slip-on shoes. The iconic Weejuns style featured an unobtrusive silhouette, a stitched moc-toe and flat strap styling. You can now pick up the Logan Flat Strap Weejuns — a modernized version of the classic — for just $72 at Nordstrom. That’s a small amount to pay for such a versatile and timeless style. — John Zientek

Marshall Stanmore Bluetooth Speaker
Save $179: This is a powered Bluetooth speaker that looks like the company’s classic guitar and bass amps. You connect via Bluetooth (or via RCA or aux, in case you want to connect the speaker to a turntable or just don’t feel like dealing with Bluetooth) and then there are three tactile knobs for adjusting treble, bass and volume. The speaker is normally $349 — it’s a very good-sounding speaker — but Amazon Prime members can pick the speaker up for $170 today (black model only). That’s over half off. If you need further convincing, Best Buy has the same speaker on sale for $315 (here), which is nowhere near as good of a deal.

New Balance Running Shoe Sale
Save 37%: New Balance started in Boston, Massachusetts in 1906 as a company to improve shoe fit, but quickly found its niche in the running shoe world. The brand has found its way onto many online running forums thanks to its vast array of models and versions of speedy shoes. Running nerds (no shame) know the exact model numbers for their favorite sneakers and which version is better than the other — there was a lot of discussion on online forums about New Balance’s decision to radically change everything about the 1080 V5 when the V6 launched. And now the V7 is on sale. As with any running shoe, it’s best to try it on and test it out in store to see how it’ll feel when underfoot, but with deals this good, we’d understand if you purchased first, tested later.– Meg Lappe

ELAC Uni-Fi UB5
Save 30%: ELAC’s Uni-Fi UB5 bookshelf speakers have been universally praised for delivering true hi-fi sound performance at a relatively affordable price tag — CNET’s audio experts even called the UB5 “one of the best speakers we’ve seen in the last few years.” Created by legendary speaker designer Andrew Jones, the speakers feature a three-way design and a custom concentric driver. A pair of UB5s normally retails for $500, but right now you can score them for just $350, making them an astounding value for the money and an easy way to upgrade your home audio system. — Andrew Connor

Pelican Cases Sale
Save Up To 46%: Pelican is the largest equipment case manufacturer in the world, and their 40+ years of experience shine through in every product they make, whether that product is intended for commerical, private or government use (their tough-as-nails cases are used to store everything from cell phones to medical equipment to weapons, and everything in between). Right now, Amazon is running a sale on several of their products, which are all made of ABS structural plastic and feature built-in O-ring-sealed pressure purge valves for quick equalization after changes in altitude or temperature. Most cases come with pluck-n-fit or 3-piece foam that allows for customization of the case interior to precisely fit your gear, and the cases are guaranteed for life against breakage due to manufacture defects.
If you’re worried about taking your fancy new DSLR on that next adventure, pick up a Pelican case and worry no further! — Oren Hartov

Uniqlo Supima Cotton Crewneck
Save 20%: Between those who know and those who don’t know how to dress, Summer is the great equalizer. Gone are opportunities to show off your skills at matching patterns and textures and colors over a dozen layers. Summer is about how little you can wear without making other people uncomfortable. Hence the short-sleeved T-shirt reigns supreme.

The plain, boring, single color and otherwise altogether uninteresting T-shirt is the shirt of Summer. And if you’re as boring to look at but as concerned with getting peak value as I am, you’ll get Uniqlo’s wonderful Supima Crewneck.

It is unadorned and just there, but it’s made with Supima cotton, which is essentially the best cotton you could hope for any of your things to be made from if you want them to last and for them to be soft (sheets especially). Yes, even “Egyptian” cotton, which references nothing but where it was grown. Supima is grown in the states, represents less than 1 percent of cotton grown worldwide and sports an extra-long staple, granting it strength and resistance to pilling.

Uniqlo’s Supima shirt is cozy, airy, comes in 10 colors and, right now, it’s only $8. — Will Price

Zodiac’s Legacy Watches Are Born-Again with American Sensibility

Founded in 1882, Zodiac has a storied history. It boasts one of the most interesting watch archives out there — with iconic and beloved tool watches like the first Sea Wolf divers watch of 1953. Having been brought into the fold of the Fossil Group, Zodiac’s legacy has been primed for an even greater resurgence. From the color stories, design, functionality and precision — today, its Swiss heritage and quality are coupled with American sensibility. We spent a few days with Zodiac’s Swiss-based Chris Moreau, Group Manager for Product Development and Texas-based Brand Director, TJ McKnight as they met halfway in New York to chat about the Zodiac archive and what’s to come for this venerable legacy brand.

Meet the Super Sea Wolf

Zodiac launched the Super Sea Wolf in 1968 — a more robust sibling to the original. The collection today revives the spirit of its legacy with unique vintage colorways — which live just as well today as they did in the mid-century. The lot has tool watches that can pair just as well with a wetsuit as they do with a blazer or pullover. See the Collection

Gear to Make Your Backyard a Weekend Oasis

The backyard should be your weekend retreat during the summer — whether it’s for a nap under the shade of your favorite tree or corralling your friends for a game of horseshoes — garden leisure should thrive in the heat of summer. And the right gear will only help you along: a comfy blanket, a game or two, an insulated growler to enjoy your beverage of choice and a dedicated bag to keep it all together in your garage or mudroom. And of course, a way to protect yourself from mosquitoes is essential — there won’t be much fun had if you end up covered in welts.

Godspeed, Mosquitoes

We love the fact that the Thermacell Radius Zone Mosquito Repellent ingeniously allows you to skip messy sprays and lotions to keep all the focus on kicking back all weekend-long. The tiny device utilizes an EPA-approved pyrethroid active ingredient — or basically, a synthetic copy of the naturally occurring repellent found in chrysanthemum plants. Using a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, it heats up the repellent to disperse an odorless 110-square-foot mosquito protection zone.

It’s compact, portable and TSA approved for travel (perfect for that epic camping trip coming up, for example). Not to mention, one repellent refill lasts up to 40 hours. Your weekends this summer now have an easy answer to the universal mosquito problem at the simple push of a button.

The Backyard Essentials

How We’d Spend a Day Cruising on the Pacific Coast Highway

Very few stretches of asphalt can compete with the Pacific Coast Highway in California. From top to bottom, depending on what county you’re in, takes a few different names and number designations, but for nearly 556 miles there’s nothing but unbroken, continuous beauty. And we’re not talking monotonous, slumber-inducing 500-plus miles of pin-straight road work. The PCH follows almost every undulation and wrinkles California’s coast has to offer, which is why, given southern California’s penchant for round-the-clock sunshine, it’s one of the most idyllic locations for a springtime motorcycle ride.

The tricky part, then, is not whether you should go for a ride up the PCH, it’s deciding where to start. Over on the east coast, that would mean trying to pick a starting point somewhere between Baltimore, Maryland, and Savannah, Georgia. So, the day’s ride wholly depends on how far or how south you decide to start. However, taking into consideration the views will be gorgeous no matter where I set off from, the next factors then became food stops and surrounding topography, just off the main stretch. Good coffee was a must but more importantly so were rolling hills, canyon switchbacks and oceanic overlooks. And, considering that, touring in and around Malibu on an Indian Scout — a bike with a cruiser-sport standard-type multiple personalities — was the only choice.

10:30am: Kicking off the morning at out over the water at Malibu Farms with black coffee and a hearty egg sandwich fueling me until noon made the most sense. The late morning start, with a cool ocean breeze doing its best to calm the ever-warming, rising sun set the tone for the rest of the day. It’s hard to argue against leaving a view of the Pacific, sipping fresh coffee with the relaxing sound waves lapping under the pier, but there were canyons to carve and more coffee to be had in the hills just over my shoulder. 11:45am: Only a few miles north, up the PCH is El Matador State Beach. Not only is it good for the view and a little relaxation, the ride from Malibu Farms to El Matador was the perfect warm up on the Indian before I hooked a right off the PCH and into the hills.

The grandness of the PCH doesn’t come from the highway alone. Sure, the ride along the highway is a sight to behold unto itself, but the surrounding geography of any given reason is enough to pick an area, like Malibu, and go exploring. If you want to stretch the legs of your car or motorcycle, in this case, and Indian Scout, the canyons just off of the PCH are the premier destination. However, the crown jewel, and likely the most famous stretch of any road in the area is Mulholland Highway. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70’s, he likes of Steve McQueen could be found flogging whatever sportscar he fancied that day, but today motorcyclist seems to rule the roost. 1:00pm: If you’re not familiar with the area, just passing through, the Rock Store might seem like a hidden gem. Entirely to the contrary, the stone and wood stop-off is a snapshot of a bygone era, but still attracts motorcyclists and fellow canyon carvers from all around to act as a waypoint, rest stop and rider refueling station. 1:30pm: And just two minutes up the road from there is The Old Place, where you can grab a hearty oak-grilled steak sandwich, that should hold you over for the rest of the day.

It’s all too easy to get lost in the canyons above Malibu for a day, going turn to turn, grazing your bike’s pegs on the asphalt as confidence rises. On any other stretch of highway and slithering offshoots, it attaches to, it may seem like a daunting and worrisome experience. However, in the web of asphalt that ties the southern California canyons to the ocean via the PCH, getting lost is almost the goal. Because after a cup of coffee and three or four turns in and you’ll never want to leave.

The Watch for the Ride

The 44mm limited edition, self-winding, mechanical chronographs were created in homage to the Indian Motorcycle Company. The open-worked dial, industrial stainless steel bracelet and Indian red strap are all design elements reminiscent of IMC’s racing heritage. The result: a perfect companion for any motorcycle ride. Staff Picks: What Our Style Team Likes Right Now

Every day, our team filters through hundreds of style articles, clothing pieces, collection launches, brand parties, blogger fads, runway shows, fashion shoots, lookbooks and many, many more stimuli to stay on top of what’s hot in men’s fashion. In spite of all that noise, we’ll keep things simple here: just four things we’re into right now, updated each week.

Zodiac Olympos Limited Edition

The safe bet to make when buying a high-end dress watch is to buy something simple and staid. The Olympos, though, is a decidedly distinct alternative. With a design inspired by a Zodiac from the 1960s, the Olympos features an asymmetrical “manta-ray” case shape. The hands are driven by a Swiss-made automatic movement, and despite that, the watch still comes in at under $1,000.

Sunspel Sunglasses

After 150 year in business, Sunspel has release a collection of sunglasses that are well-made and stylish. Crafted at a factory at the foot of the Dolomites, these shades are hand-made from Italian acetate. What’s more, the style will look just as good with a suit as it will with a pair of swim trunks.

Loro Piana Grandad-Collar Linen Shirt

Made in Italy, this linen shirt has a regular cut and buffalo horn buttons. The band-collar style adds a decidedly casual aspect to this shirt, making it more versatile than a traditional button up. Wear it under a blazer for more formal events or wear it over a tee on a casual weekend.

Frescobol Carioca Linen Drawstring Trousers

These lightweight trousers will keep you cool when the dress code calls for something more than shorts. Featuring a slim cut, they look as refined as a pair of chinos, but with the drawstring waist, they’re noticaby more comfortable.

Our Staff’s Favorite Adventure Travel Necessities

Welcome to another installment of Staff Picks from our Outdoors and Fitness team. Every other week, we select our favorite pieces out of the gear we’re testing, mainstays in our kits, as well as items on our wish lists. It’s like a sneak peek at the gear we’re testing and what we’re stoked on. Have something you think we should check out? Or just want to say hi? Drop us a line at outdoor@gearpatrol.com.

Citizen World Perpetual A-T

A trusty watch in the wild is a valued commodity that every adventurer should have available to strap on their wrist. And they don’t come more reliable than one with Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology that powers the watch via any light source. The Citizen World Perpetual A-T also offers atomic timekeeping for pinpoint accuracy when you need it most: in the outdoors. Water resistant up to 333 feet, the classic World Perpetual A-T, with its stainless steel case and bracelet, is an under-the-radar option as a take anywhere timepiece. One that can serve you well on hikes, snorkeling excursions or just laidback days spent at the beach. — Gear Patrol

RMU Core Pack 35L

RMU’s Core Pack is the perfect pack for adventure travel. It seamlessly transitions from the airport to an overnight hike without screaming “I’m going backpacking!” while you’re in urban environments. All of its more technical features like a waist belt, compression straps, a helmet pocket and gear attachment loops all tuck away to keep the bag sleek and minimal. It comes in three colors: maroon, blue and black (we’re partial to the black colorway). Its 35 liters of storage are surprisingly spacious, and offer more than enough pockets to keep you organized. — AJ Powell, Assistant Editor

If you’re looking for something similar, but the pick above isn’t quite right, try these alternatives: Cotopaxi Allpa ($190) | The North Face Alpine 50 ($240)

Spy Optics Hi-Fi Sunglasses

To me, adventure travel is one of the trickiest trips to pack for — what exactly am I doing and what do I need to take to new city or location? Does everyone wear hiking boots to the bar? What about leggings or a pullover sweatshirt that also happens to be sweat-wicking? Finding the gear that works on the mountain and also blends into whatever surroundings I head to next before returning home is a challenge I welcome. One product that I’ve found helps me look like a local is a pair of sunglasses that look stylish, but will still work on a bike, run or hike. These sunglasses from Spy Optics work just as well for a bike commute as they do for a long run, and then seamlessly transition to an urban environment if I have to grab groceries or meet a friend for drinks. The 100 percent UV protection is a no-brainer and the strength of the frame is tough to beat.— Meg Lappe, Staff Writer

If you’re looking for something similar, but the pick above isn’t quite right, try these alternatives: Roka Phantom TI ($310) | Revant F1L ($155)

Foehn Nelson Pant

To me, adventure travel means leveraging the most function out of the smallest amount of gear. For instance, a single week in Ecuador might involve trekking through the altiplano at 13,000 feet, wandering the streets of Cuenca and surfing a break on the Pacific coast. You could bring multiple 50-pound bags of gear, but it wouldn’t be practical. I aim for items that fill more than one need and serve in multiple environments, like Foehn’s Nelson Pant. The pants are optimized for movement with four-way stretch, and they’re both rugged and good-looking too, which means you can rock them nearly anywhere. — Tanner Bowden, Associate Staff Writer

If you’re looking for something similar, but the pick above isn’t quite right, try these alternatives: Mountain Hardwear AP Pant ($90) | Fjällräven Vidda Pro Trouser ($150)

What Our Style Team Likes Now: Panerai’s New Divers, Japanese-Made Sunglasses and More

Every day, our team filters through hundreds of style articles, clothing pieces, collection launches, brand parties, blogger fads, runway shows, fashion shoots, lookbooks and many, many more stimuli to stay on top of what’s hot in men’s fashion. The collection also includes the first Luminor Submersible 1950 launched by Panerai with a 42mm case, which comes in two versions: the classic features a stainless steel case while the red gold offers a black ceramic disk on the rotating bezel. It really doesn’t matter the season — white kicks, in their utter simplicity, can jazz up any outfit. It’s a classic look, one we all sport likely more than any other. Basically, our white sneakers are getting a lot of traction. The only issue, of course, is that white really doesn’t stay white. Whether they’re subjected to the grime of the city streets, getting stepped on during your morning commute or whether you’re just spill-prone, the days of having pristine white shoes are very limited.

There are ways, however, to get the freshness back. Check out our tutorial above and read on to snag some of our recommended essentials to keep your white sneakers white. And if you just can’t be bothered, you could always head over to East Dane and buy a new pair.

Caring for Leather

R.M. Williams: Leather Cleaner $20
R.M. Williams: Leather Conditioner $20
Mr. Clean: Magic Eraser $6
Coach New York: C101 Low Top Sneaker $195

This leather cleaner is actually miraculous. With a damp cloth (the addition of a magic eraser on the mid-sole) and some of this sprayed directly on your shoe, it can actually be like new again. The conditioner is icing on the cake. The two in tandem are well-worth the time spent if you want your shoes to be spotless again.

Step by Step
1. Soak your laces in warm, soapy water.
2. Using a Magic Eraser, scrub the midsole.
3. Spray the leather cleaner directly onto your shoe and scrub.
4. Apply leather conditioner onto the shoe by hand and buff.
5. Leave to air dry and relace.

Caring for Canvas

Men’s Society: Sneaker Cleaning Kit $35
Veja: Wata Canvas Sneaker $95

This kit from Men’s Society has everything you need to clean your shoes packed into a tiny tin box. It’s stocked with two bottles of lightly-scented cleaning solution and a double-sided brush (fit for canvas or suede). Though you have to work a little harder to scrub your canvas shoes, this complete set takes the edge off.

Step by Step
1. Soak your laces in warm, soapy water.
2. Dip the brush into clean warm water.
3. Apply the cleaning solution directly on the brush.
4. Scrub and repeat until clean.
5. Leave to air dry and then relace.

How This Swiss Watchmaker Stays Creative

Founded in 1904, in the Swiss town of Hölstein, Oris is still independently making watches from the same headquarters to this day. In a world full of conglomerates, Oris stakes its success in being a small entity. From the price point to its ability to act creatively, the watchmaker has been pushing out quality products for more than 110 years.

And for Oris’ Co-CEO Rolf Studer, independence is everything. “It’s not just being financially independent; it also means you can think independently and come up with your own solutions to problems,” he says.

When Studer first came to Oris 12 years ago, he was astounded by how lean the team was — a mere 70 people work in the Hölstein HQ. But today, Studer touts the merits of working with so few people — everyone has to be nimble, creative and tuned in to the success of the business. “It means people do a lot of things,” he says. “Wearing many hats is also broadening your horizons.” With staff involved in many different aspects of the making of mechanical watches, it lends a sense of comradery. “We do have a family feel,” Studer adds.

And wearing a lot of hats also opens up the possibilities in terms of creativity. Its independence and small size is the key that’s behind the development of Oris’ most notable product developments. “When it comes to products, it means we also think a little bit out of the box. It means that we are not only looking for solutions within the movements but also in the watch as a whole.”

For example, Studer notes the achievements of its Aquis Depth Gauge and Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter. With Oris’ Aquis Depth Gauge, the team worked specifically with the sapphire crystal to show accurate depth without levers that could be delayed. “In our Altimeter, we did the same thing,” he says. “We didn’t work with the movement.” Rather, the team worked with a barometer. “[We] worked through different gears, through a hand made of carbon fiber to show your current pressure and pressure in a fixed point means altitude.”

Its latest movement, Caliber 114, combines a 10-day power reserve, a non-linear power reserve indicator, a date indication and, for the first time, a 24-hour second time zone with half-hour indication — something no other Swiss mechanical watch currently combines in one timepiece. “We always have the ambition to go to the next level in what we do, to find that next complication or solution,” says Studer

Being independent and ultra-nimble keeps the innovations coming while also keeping the price point low. And in Hölstein, that keeps spirits pretty high too. “All around the world we have the same spirit,” says Studer. “The spirit of fighting against the big boys, making it happen — fighting for your space.”

The Gear to Keep Your Summer Weekends Stocked

There are plenty of paths to choose when the days get longer and the air gets warmer, but the key is making the most of each weekend no matter your pursuit. Whether that’s casting a line at your secret spot, chalking-up to do some problem solving on your favorite cliff face or posting up at your local park for a staycation, your summer weekends should be spent outdoors.

To haul the gear you need for any weekend adventure requires a bag that can withstand it all and carry it all. Which is exactly what the YETI Camino Carryall was built to do. Constructed from the same waterproof, Thickskin Shell as their Panga Duffel, the Camino can take a beating, be hosed clean and ready to do it all again the next weekend. Its sturdy EVA molded bottom ensures that it will stay upright and allow its big mouth opening to keep any gear accessible at a moment’s notice. The mountain, the river and that unexpectedly competitive bocce ball game have met their match in the Camino.

The Ultimate Footwear Built for Adventure (No Matter Where You End Up)

No matter the season, location, altitude or terrain, KEEN’s footwear has always been designed to live up to a variety of environments. It started in 2003 with the KEEN NEWPORT, a sandal that could help keep you cool on a summer day but more importantly, live up to the challenge of keeping you safe and secure on a rigorous hike. With a brand ethos to make products for a healthy lifestyle, KEEN ticks the box by making sure there is a shoe for every adventurous occasion. In that spirit, and to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of KEEN’s ultimate outdoor sandal, we’ve made a list of some of our favorite outdoor destinations — for a day hike, weekend getaway or a longer (more tropical) trek — and the shoes we’d take along for the journey.

Best Day Hikes x KEEN TARGHEE III

The KEEN TARGHEE III is designed for all-terrain. It’s tough, waterproof and breathable thanks to the KEEN.DRY membrane, has a leather mud shield and an injected TPU heel-capture system for added stability. It will most assuredly do the trick for any rigorous hike and it’s our pick to take along whether in the Pacific Northwest or our home state, New York.
Mailbox Peak, Washington: This challenging 9-mile hike, a cool 45 minutes from Seattle, offers a 360 degree view of the north and central Cascades at the top.
Anthony’s Nose Hike, New York: Part of the Appalachian Trail, the view from the top overlooks Bear Mountain Bridge.
Fermilab, Illinois: Chicago may lack elevation, but it has some beautiful scenery — that includes Bison gazing along the prairie at the very pretty Fermilab trail.

Best Long Weekends x KEEN NEWPORT

KEEN’s classic sandal, the KEEN NEWPORT, was created to be just as safe as a traditional hiking boot and it is. It has excellent traction thanks to multi-directional lug pattern and razor siping, not to mention a TPU stability shank. It will take you in and out of water seamlessly as well if you end up in a wet climate or trudging through a creek or two.

Vancouver: A hop and skip away from Whistler, Vancouver offers the best natural escape with all of the offerings of a world-class city.
Naples: A central location to hike Mt Vesuvius or catch a boat to rocky Capri for the afternoon, bustling Naples also boasts the reward of excellent carb-loading.
Zurich: Centrally-set in Western Europe, Switzerland’s most metropolitan city is still just a quick train ride away from some of the most epic hikes the Alps have to offer.

Best Tropical Adventures x KEEN EVOFIT ONE

The KEEN EVOFIT ONE is the ultimate sandal for warmer weather pursuits. Offering a sock-like fit, it is ultra-flexible for optimal active comfort. Equipped with the same tread you would expect from all of the brand’s footwear, it is a true high-performance sandal. It features a superior lace-capture system, natural odor control and TPU reinforcement for added durability. It’s right at home hiking through waterfalls, trekking through the jungle or simply hitting the beach.

Bajos del Toro Cloud Forest, Costa Rica: Filled with lush vegetation and impressive waterfalls, Costa Rica offers the best for those who like hiking and don’t mind a little humidity.
Tom Moore’s Jungle, Bermuda: Only an hour and a half flight from New York City, this tiny rock island has everything from SUP to ocean kayaking, beach hikes and sailing. Tom Moore’s Jungle has particularly beautiful caves hidden throughout.
Koh Samui, Thailand: Thailand offers no shortage of water sports, not to mention beautiful scenery and some excellent beach camping. Thailand’s second largest island, Koh Samui has some pretty dense rain forests along with palm-lined beaches.

Five Excellent Gifts for Your Grad This Year

Graduation day is a time to reflect on a few years’ worth of accomplishments and a lifetime ahead to put it all to good use. It’s truly a special time and as a gift-giver, that means putting some effort and love into choosing something rightly worthy, something that your grad will cherish for a very long time. Pick a gift (or two) that won’t go out of style and that’s designed to last a lifetime. And, of course, don’t skimp. Show them you care — it’s a celebration after all.

TAG Heuer Aquaracer

Graduation is the perfect moment to give a gift that will last a lifetime and a well-built timepiece is a classic option. The 43mm case housing a Swiss-quartz movement and it’s water resistant up to 300 meters. The khaki nylon strap and matching khaki sunray dial also transition well to being dressed up or down. Coming in at $1600, it’s also a surprisingly affordable watch for the decades of use your grad will get from this item.

Hakushu 12 Year

A great bottle of whiskey is a home bar essential and Suntory’s Hakushu 12 Year is one of the best. It’s in such high demand that supplies are running low and will soon run dry. Getting your hands on one would be a top notch gift — really, for any loved one.

Rimowa Salsa Deluxe 22-inch Carry-on

If you’re grad is lucky, they might just end up starting a gig with travel perks. Even if not, a great carry-on case is a must-have and Rimowa’s is the cream of the crop.

The 10 Best Multi-Tools of 2018

This guide to the best multi-tools of 2018 covers ten awesome multi-tools that are perfect for EDC and bigger jobs. It also offers tips and advice to know before you buy.

Editor’s Pick Best Multi-Tool: Gerber Center-Drive

The fundamental idea behind a multi-tool — to pack as many individual tools into the smallest, pocketable form — presents a dangerous flaw. Quantity can become a detriment to function. Think about it — how many of the dozen-plus claimed “tools” are you leveraging in a pinch?

Gerber asked that exact question to the contractors, mechanics, outdoorsmen and members of the armed forces who use its tools. Then, it culled the common denominators and set out to make the ultimate master-of-a-few, failure-at-none multi-tool and came up with the Center-Drive.

The Center-Drive rids itself of unnecessary features and improves the primary tools that users find the most use for. Its pliers slide up out of the knife and are spring loaded so that they can be operated with one hand. Its plain edge knife blade is bigger than any other multi-tool we’ve come across. The screwdriver gets the biggest upgrade though; it’s full-size and angled inwards so that it can be rotated on a center axis and comes with standard, replaceable bits. It’s one of those ideas that works so well; it makes us wonder why nobody took the screwdriver more seriously before.

Additionally, the 14 other tools (serrated knife, file, bottle opener, etc.) offer enough functionality that you won’t need a backup.

Introduction

At the core of every DIYer is a psychological inclination for over-preparedness. If there’s the slightest chance that a task will arise, a toolbox is supplied with the appropriate implement to restore working order. As more specialized chores reveal themselves, the toolbox becomes overstuffed, expanding into a shed or even a garage. The local contractor is never contacted.

The DIY spirit exists even in those of us who aren’t inclined to solve every problem on our own, and one thing we and the all-doers can agree on is the practicality of the multi-tool. In the multi-tool, an entire collection of tools is shrunk into a go-everywhere sidekick. But a multi-tool shouldn’t replace the toolbox; it should complement it. Stash one in a kitchen drawer or a glovebox, and you’ll be sure that the occasional unanticipated job never goes without a response.

The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday

Built with a Carbonox case, scratch-resistant crystal and waterproofing up to 200 meters, the Luminox Navy SEAL Chronograph 3580 series is seriously tough. The functional chronograph was created to endure the challenges of the SEALs and so you can be damn sure it will get through whatever you might do to it. Buy Now: $495

Types of Multi-Tools

A multi-tool is a multi-tool… right? A picture drawn in the mind’s eye likely renders a chrome-silver tool with twin handles that fold open to reveal pliers, and has a variety of cutters, drivers and openers that fold out of either side. (It may even have the name Leatherman etched into its side, but that brand is by no means the only multi-tool maker to hold in high regard.)

That image is the classic multi-tool, but the category has grown to be more general and all-encompassing. Practically speaking, any tool with multiple functions is a multi-tool. In this guide, we’ve broken the category down into three groupings.

The first, full-size multi-tools, is like the example above. These are full-featured tools designed for any task. This is a toolbox-worthy tool that often comes with a leather holster that can attach to a belt.

The second, mini multi-tools, is a pared-down and more portable version of this. The highly-specialized tools have typically been stripped away to leave only small versions of the essentials. These tools are small enough to go unnoticed in a pocket or attached to a keychain.

Our third category is keychain multi-tools. These tools are highly minimal and aren’t designed to replace anything else you might carry. Instead, they tend to serve as keychains with some additional functionality supplied by a bottle opener.

What Makes a Good Multi-Tool?

The answer to this question is entirely subjective. Today, there are so many types of multi-tools available that one can easily find an option with a toolset to serve the needs and tasks that you encounter most often. Those who want the most function possible should opt for a full-size tool. Others will achieve optimum practicality with just a bottle opener and a small knife.

There are, however, some qualities that we look for in deciding which of these tools are best. A multi-tool’s main features, such as pliers and knives, should be robust enough for use in almost any situation. All tools should lock, and scissors and pliers should, ideally, be spring-loaded. Generally speaking, if a tool is present, it should be useful.

The Best Full-Size Multi-Tools of 2018

Gerber Center-Drive

Leatherman Wave+

Leatherman, like Kleenex and Band-Aid, is one of those brand names that has come to stand for the category of products it produces: multi-tools. That’s because we’ve collectively agreed that Leatherman produces some of the best available, and among the 50-plus tools in its arsenal, the Wave is its all-time best-seller.

The Wave features all the tools one might imagine should be present in a multi-tool: pliers, scissors, a bottle and can opener, wire cutters, a screwdriver, a ruler, a file. It emphasizes blades, with a plain edge, serrated and saw option. All are long and robust, with built-in frame locks. In fact, all of the tools lock, which is an awesome feature when torque is involved.

Nothing overly-specialized or unnecessarily specific is present in the Wave+, just the essentials. It opens in a butterfly shape; it’s made of stainless steel; it is the classic Leatherman, which makes it the classic multi-tool.

Weight: 8.5 ounces
Material: Stainless steel
Number of Tools: 18

Victorinox SwissTool Spirit X

Victorinox’s famous Swiss Army knives are multi-tools in their own right, so it’s not a surprise that the company can pull off a full-sized butterfly-style tool too. In many ways, the Spirit X is a predictable multi-tool, but that’s precisely why it succeeds.

It has a long, frame-lock plain edge knife as well as separate saws for wood and metal. Its needle-nose pliers aren’t spring-loaded, but are functionally long, with different-sized teeth and built-in wire cutters. Its scissors are spring-loaded, but are small (this is the case for many multi-tools, and it’s okay because big cutting jobs will probably call for a full-sized pair anyway).

The Spirit X has the other mandatory tools: a can opener, bottle opener, a Phillips head and two flathead screwdrivers, but it also comes with some extras, like a multifunctional reamer and a crate opener. It also has a unique handle shape that appears almost bent. In use though, that shape provides a more ergonomic grip when operating either fold-out tools or pliers. It’s that handle shape that makes the Spirit X a notable standby.

Weight: 8.7 ounces
Material: Stainless steel
Number of Tools: 22

SOG Baton Q3

SOG’s recent Baton series reimagines the multi-tool from the outside in. It’s often that the more functionality a tool receives, usually in the form of added features, the more unwieldy it becomes in a pocket or attached to a belt. The Baton is long and slim, so it’s more manageable and more comfortable in hand.

Of SOG’s four Baton multi-tools, we prefer the Q3. It has all the essentials a multi-tool should, including pliers that are deployed by pulling the tool apart. There’s also a plain edge knife, medium and small screwdrivers, spring-loaded scissors, a can opener and a bottle opener, and a tiny driver for adjusting watches and jewelry.

All of these tools lock, and because they fold out of the ends of the Baton, the entire length of the handle is left for use, which we found provides more comfort and depending on the tool you’re using, more torque.

Weight: 6 ounces
Material: Stainless steel, aluminum handle
Number of Tools: 13

The Best Mini Multi-Tools of 2018

Gerber Dime

The Dime measures in at a mere 2.75 inches fully closed, which means you can attach it to your keychain or throw it in your pocket without worry. For something this small and light, it boasts an array of tools that includes real spring-loaded pliers, spring-loaded scissors, screwdrivers and a nifty blade that’s designed to slice open plastic clamshell packaging. Best of all is the bottle opener that’s at the ready without opening the tool at all. In this price range, there is bound to be a few drawbacks; the Dime’s tools don’t open as smoothly as other multi-tools, meaning you have to dig your fingernails to open them. But the positives outweigh the negatives.

Weight: 2.2 ounces
Material: Stainless steel
Number of Tools: 11

Leatherman Micra

Leatherman’s expertise in packing a bunch of tools into one practical package extends beyond full-size multi-tools, and the Micra is arguably Leatherman’s greatest mini multi-tool. It’s no bigger than a disposable lighter, yet functions (and looks) much like Leatherman’s larger multi-tools. The opening action is clean and satisfying; the scissors are sharp and spring-loaded; the nine other tools are useful for most people’s’ everyday needs. If we were to pick one standout feature, though, it’s the Micra’s simple shape. Perfect rectangles are meant for keychains. And they’ll never go out of style.

Weight: 1.8 ounces
Material: Stainless steel
Number of Tools: 10

Victorinox MiniChamp

The classic Swiss Army Knife seems like it exists in a category of its own, but technically speaking it is a multi-tool. Victorinox makes the Swiss Army in a number of sizes with varying toolsets, but the MiniChamp is a standout. It expertly packs a handful of tools that you’ll actually use — like a nail cuticle pusher and a ballpoint pen — into a tiny package. It also has the requisite knife and bottle opener, but it’s the little flashlight that gives the MiniChamp an extra leg over the rest of the Swiss Army models.

Weight: 1.6 ounces
Material: Stainless steel, ABS/Cellidor handle
Number of Tools: 18

The Best Keychain Multi-Tools of 2018

James Brand The Hook

The James Brand is more well-known for its thoughtful and stylish pocket knives. Ryan Coulter, the brand’s founder and designer, is on a mission to own the pocket, and the Hook fills an important role in doing that. The small, solid-state tool is designed to hang off a belt loop and provide a home for your keys, but it’s also equipped with a measuring edge and a bottle opener. For many, that’s all that’s needed.

Weight: 0.5 ounces
Material: Stainless steel
Number of Tools: 3

Leatherman 10

Leatherman’s most basic multi-tool has no hinges or moving parts and is small enough to fit on a keychain. The 10 is built for basic everyday tasks like opening boxes and bottles. The tool also comes with a screwdriver tip that functions as both flathead and Phillips head as well as a multi-size hex wrench. Leatherman made the 10 with 420 stainless steel, and it weighs half an ounce, which is light enough to go unnoticed on a keychain.

Weight: 0.5 ounces
Material: 420 stainless steel
Number of Tools: 4

Quiet Carry Shorty

On a surface level, the Shorty is an EDC tool designed to keep keys organized in your pocket. Quiet Carry designed the tool with extra functionality though, which is transmitted through a fold-out multi-tool (the Shorty can also be ordered with a knife blade, or a blade with a bottle opener built-in). The multi-tool combines a bottle opener, screwdriver, and hex wrench, and employs a frame-lock for sturdy use. The great thing about the Shorty is that it houses the tool and your keys in a minimalist rectangle, freeing you from the clutter created when carrying multiple items.

Weight: 1.6 ounces
Material: 416 stainless steel
Number of Tools: 4
