Four Vanquish Zagatos go to one buyer with the most beautiful garage ever

Aston Martin is building 99 Vanquish Zagato coupes, 99 Vanquish Zagato Volantes, 99 Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brakes, and a mere 28 Vanquish Zagato Speedsters. One extremely tasteful, extremely rich, and extremely fortunate man named Dylan bought one Vanquish Zagato coupe, one Vanquish Zagato Volante, one Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake, and one Vanquish Zagato Speedster. That’s four Vanquish Zagatos in one collection, and that is how to properly say, “Merry Christmas to me.”

This news comes courtesy of popular Youtube car enthusiast and personality Mr. JWW. He was invited to Aston Martin headquarters in Gaydon, England, to capture the four artworks, all of which are done in Lava Red with gold accents. This is known as the Villa d’Este pack, named after the place where the first car was unveiled. To help JWW take in and understand the totality of the beauty before him, Aston Martin Director of Design Miles Nurnberger discusses each of the cars and their unique qualities.

One particularly interesting bit regarded the shooting brake, which Nurnberger said, “we sort of started it and then realized to make a really good shooting brake we had to do a lot more engineering.” Thus, the long-roof Vanquish actually has a longer wheelbase than the rest of the cars. According to Nunberger, the rear of the car is taken from a modular platform and is essentially a rear of a Rapide that has been added on. Of course, that required total reengineering, retesting, as well as re-crashing to bring it to production.

Nurnberger goes on to discuss the specific designs of the other cars, including the aerodynamic challenges of the insanely rare Speedster. Check out the full 18-minute video above.

The Fastest Cars You Can Buy for Under $50,000

I have personally had the good fortune of owning about a dozen different cars over the last decade, with most of them being acquired on the used market. With great interest, I am often scouring sites such as AutoTrader; mostly to get an idea of what’s out there – like watching the stock market – or in some cases, with the intent of making an immediate purchase.

If you’re patient and have a solid idea of what you want, I feel that there is always a great deal to be had. There can be a lot to sift through at times on the web, but the gems are there for the taking. You likely won’t get the exact car you had in mind – specs, options, colors et al – but the monetary savings from not ordering that exact car brand new from the factory, should more than makeup for that.

That is not to say that there aren’t some very desirable brand new cars at an affordable price out there, because there are. The used market is just more inclined to have some more unique offerings and a better bang for buck overall.

Here are a few of the fastest* cars you can buy for under $50,000 USD.

*Note: Fastest by my definition, is the broader consideration of overall performance metrics, rather than just 0-60 times or raw power.

Porsche 911 Turbo (996 Generation)

Porsche 911 Turbo (996 Generation)Porsche 911 Turbo (996 Generation)

If you’re looking for a top of the line Porsche 911, look no further than the 996 Turbo. If you can get past the looks (read: headlights), it’s a really solid car. With 420-horsepower, 415 lb-ft of torque and all-wheel-drive, you are getting the pinnacle of road car performance from the early 2000s era, for a fifth of the cost of a new one.

Honda Civic Type R (New)

Honda Civic Type R (New)Honda Civic Type R (New)

I had mentioned earlier that new cars would not be excluded from this list, and also my definition of ‘fastest’. On paper, the CTR produces 306-horsepower and 295 lb-ft or torque; specs that aren’t exactly going to raise eyebrows by today’s standards – but do note that the CTR is the fastest front-wheel drive car around the Nurburgring with a time of 7:43.80. It is by all accounts that matter, a legitimately fast car.

Dodge Viper (SR II)

Dodge Viper (SR II)Dodge Viper (SR II)

The second generation Dodge Viper is an iconic car, and some argue the commercial pinnacle of the Viper’s storied past. Boasting its massive 8.0L V10 engine which produced 450-horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque, the Viper is an American icon and quite the collectible these days.

On the track, the Viper is a doozy to drive – with its lack of assists and abundance of power, the Viper’s potential will only be tapped into by the most experienced drivers.

Tesla Model S (Early Models)

Tesla Model S (Early Models)Tesla Model S (Early Models)

The Tesla Model S first arrived in 2012 to much acclaim. While electric vehicles as a mainstream mode of transportation have yet to gain some real traction (that’s for another article), the Model S has enabled Tesla to become the most marketable, revered and de facto ruler of the electric vehicle world. By nature, electric motors are quiet; and besides their most obvious trait of not requiring gasoline, they are also very quick.

An early model Tesla S in P85 RWD trim (which would be topping the $50k budget) produces 416-horsepower and 443 lb-ft of right-here-right-now torque. These figures allow the 4,700-pound luxury sedan to do 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds – impressive, to say the least.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06/ZR1 (C6)

Chevrolet Corvette Z06/ZR1 (C6)Chevrolet Corvette Z06/ZR1 (C6)

The Corvette Z06 offers supercar performance at an incredible price, even when brand new. Equipped with a 7.0L V8 producing over 505-horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, the Z06 is sometimes underrated for its overall chassis and handling capabilities which are not sub-par to many cars well above its price range. The ZR1 offers a power boost over the Z06, with a supercharged engine generating 638-horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque – what a beast!

Nissan GT-R (CBA Models)

Nissan GT-R (CBA Models)Nissan GT-R (CBA Models)

The Nissan GT-R became the darling of the ‘everyday supercar’ world when it was released in 2009. It had the performance stature which could embarrass cars twice – even triple – its price brand new and didn’t need to be a garage queen with its overall versatility. It seems that the gap has been closed by competitors over the years, who have upped their game in terms of their bang-for-buck delivery.

However, the GT-R still remains a car of outstanding value, with its supercar performance, everyday usability and relatively low cost of ownership. Some early models can be had for less than $50,000.

BMW M3/M4 (F80)

BMW M3/M4 (F80)BMW M3/M4 (F80)

The BMW M3 is another iconic car. The production of the current-gen F80 M3 started in 2014, where it was manufactured only in saloon form, following BMW’s plans to split the BMW 4 series coupe/convertible from the 3 series. All this really means is that the M3 is the sedan, and the M4 is the 2-door iteration of the M3. So yes, M3=M4, spiritually speaking.

The engine in the M3/M4 produces 425-horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, delivered via its 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and can achieve 0-60 mph in 4 seconds. Earlier models on the used market tend to go for close to $50,000 and could be one of the best all-around cars you can get for that price.

$3.6 million Aspark Owl electric supercar preorders begin

Japan’s Aspark is taking preorders for its battery-electric Owl at the Paris Motor Show, promising deliveries starting in mid-2020 for the supercar, first revealed a year ago in Frankfurt, that promises a sprint time of less than 2 seconds.

Bloomberg reports the Japanese engineering firm is taking nonrefundable deposits of 1 million euros — about $1.15 million at today’s conversion rate — and plans to build 50 examples. Total cost of the car will be the equivalent of $3.6 million.

Osaka-based Aspark’s Owl first turned heads at last year’s Frankfurt auto show, saying that its 0-62 mph time of 2 seconds was a key focus in developing the car. It’s now promising to hit that sprint in just 1.99 seconds. In February, the company released a video of the Owl launching in a brisk 1.87 seconds, which rivals the claims made for the next-generation Tesla Roadster, though the prototype was reportedly fitted with racing tires.

The latest specs, per Bloomberg, peg the Owl at 1,150 horsepower and 652 pound-feet of torque, with a dry weight of around 3,300 pounds. That’s up significantly from last year, when the company said it weighed less than 1,900 pounds, though engineers are reportedly still finalizing the powertrain and debating how many electric motors to use. Top speed remains 174 mph, and range is 186 miles on a full charge. You’ll reportedly have to wait another year or so to test-drive it, however.

It’s worth pointing out that the Owl’s specs are dwarfed by fellow electric supercars like the 1,914-hp Rimac C_Two, said to do 0-60 mph in just 1.85 seconds and have a top speed of 258 mph, with 404 miles of range. It’s also a relative bargain at a cool $2.1 million. The new Tesla Roadster, when it launches, will go 620 miles on a charge and be priced at just $250,000.

The Owl is on display this week at the Paris Motor Show.

John Cena Ford GT to be auctioned — again: Here comes owner No. 4

The saga of the 2017 Ford GT that was famously and briefly owned by John Cena and subject to a lawsuit from Ford over flipping the car for a profit has become the automotive equivalent of a hot potato, heading once again to the auction block, this time in Dallas at Mecum in October.

We last heard about this GT, which is stamped with the VIN number 77 for the year of Cena’s birth, last month when the wealthy California farmer who had bought it from Cena put it up for auction. Auctioneer Russo and Steele confirmed the supercar sold for $1.4 million during its Monterey Car Week auction on Aug. 25. Since then, if records are accurate, its third owner has put exactly 1 mile on the odometer, which now reads 626 miles.

It’s not clear what the minimum bid is for the upcoming Dallas auction, which takes place Oct. 3-6. Autoblog left a message Friday with a Mecum spokeswoman.

Ford sued Cena late last year for flipping the car for a profit shortly after he bought it for $466,376.50, citing its clause barring any sale of the first 500 models for two years. The two sides later settled the case for an undisclosed amount.

The infamous Liquid Blue GT comes with a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 rated at 647 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque, with a top speed of 216 mph. It has a carbon fiber monocoque with an integrated steel roll cage and an aluminum substructure.

A Russo and Steele spokesman said the firm had to ensure it was free and clear of any litigation prior to its sale at Monterey last month, so the latest seller might be eager to flip it before that 2-year window expires and the other Ford GTs begin hitting the market.

Dozens of supercars amassed in alleged $364 million Ponzi scheme

Federal prosecutors in Baltimore have issued a 14-count indictment against three men accused of using a Ponzi scheme to defraud investors of more than $364 million, saying that two of them diverted the money in part to amass a jaw-dropping portfolio of 28 mostly luxury automobiles, supercars and motorcycles, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces — and one Ford Explorer.

The indictment, unsealed Tuesday but filed Sept. 11, identifies three defendants: Kevin B. Merrill, 53, of Towson, Md.; Jay B. Ledford, 54, of Westlake, Texas and Las Vegas; and Cameron R. Jezierski, 28, of Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to the cars and motorcycles, it accuses them of diverting and concealing $73 million of investors’ money intended for consumer debt portfolios to purchase and renovate high-end homes in several states, jewelry, boats, a life-insurance policy and a share in a jet plane.

Prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of the following cars and motorcycles from Merrill:

  1. 2014 Ford Explorer
  2. 2014 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster
  3. 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63
  4. 2015 BMW S1000R motorcycle
  5. 2015 Harley Davidson VRSCDX Night Rod Special Edition motorcycle
  6. 2016 Ferrari 488 coupe
  7. 2017 Audi R8 5.2 Plus coupe
  8. 2017 Lamborghini Huracan convertible
  9. 2017 Range Rover
  10. 2017 Range Rover Sport
  11. 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo S
  12. 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn convertible
  13. 2017 Rolls-Royce Wraith coupe
  14. 2018 McLaren 720S coupe
  15. 2008 Bugatti Veyron
  16. 2013 Ferrari California convertible
  17. 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe
  18. 2014 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta
  19. 2014 Pagani Huayra
  20. A pair of 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63s
  21. 2017 Cadillac Escalade ESV
  22. 2017 Lamborghini Aventador
  23. 2018 Ferrari 488 Spyder
  24. 2018 Lamborghini Huaracan

Prosecutors also seek to recover the following vehicles from Ledford:

  1. 2016 Ferrari 488
  2. 2016 Tesla Model S
  3. 2015 Bentley Flying Spur

Prosecutors say that starting in early 2013, Merrill and Ledford persuaded investors to join them in purchasing “consumer debt portfolios,” which are made up of defaulted consumer debts to banks, credit card issuers, student loan lenders and other entities, sold in batches to third parties that try to collect on the debt — so yes, this already sounds super shady. The defendants allegedly falsely claimed they would use investors’ money to invest in the portfolios and make money for them by collecting on payments people made on their debt or selling the portfolios for a profit to third-party debt buyers.

Instead, the government says, the defendants falsely represented who they were buying the debt portfolios from and how much they were paying for the portfolios, whether they were investing their own funds and their track record of success. Prosecutors say that at times, there wasn’t any underlying debt portfolio purchased with investors’ money and that the defendants “created imposter companies with names similar to actual consumer debt sellers or brokers and opened bank accounts in the names of those imposter companies.” They also allegedly created false portfolio overviews, sales agreements with names and forged signatures of actual employees of the portfolio sellers and other falsified records.

According to a related civil complaint from the SEC, victimized investors include small business owners, restauranteurs, construction contractors, retirees, doctors, lawyers, accountants, bankers, talent agents, professional athletes and financial advisors in Maryland, Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, Las Vegas, Texas and elsewhere. There are believed to be more than 400 victims across the country. “Most of these investors are just learning that they have been victimized,” U.S. Attorney Robert K. Hur said in a statement.

Anyone who believes they may have been defrauded is urged to contact the FBI at MerrillLedford@fbi.gov. You can read the full indictment here.

Typhoon Jebi destroys 51 Ferraris at dealership in Japan

The strongest typhoon to hit Japan in a quarter-century destroyed an estimated $9 million worth of Ferraris at an authorized dealership on Rokko Island, an artificial island in the city of Kobe, after sending three feet of storm surge into the showroom.

According to Yahoo Japan, the storm surge from Typhoon Jebi destroyed 51 of 53 new and used Ferraris housed at the dealership, including some that had already been purchased. Employees reportedly tried to cover the entrance with tarps and sandbags, to no avail. Salt water reportedly seeped into the engine bays, so the vehicles were trucked away to be scrapped. The dealership will reportedly look to insurance to recoup its losses.

Typhoon Jebi slammed into Japan’s west coast Sept. 4 with winds as high as 135 mph, leaving at least 11 dead and hundreds injured. It forced the closure of Kansai International Airport for three days due to flooding and after a tanker smashed into a bridge connecting the island airport to the mainland, damaging the bridge’s girders. Around 3,000 passengers had to spend the night at the airport.

Separately, about 100 cars at a seaside dealership in Nishinomiya in Hyogo prefecture burned after their electrical systems shorted out from sea water, reports said.

Koenigsegg Agera successor could be named … Ragnarok?

Koenigsegg has already given the very Nordic names Thor and Väder to its final two examples of its outgoing Agera RS supercar, so why not double down on that lineage and name the successor Ragnarok, after the violent Norse armageddon?

That’s the name The Supercar Blog, citing an unnamed source “close to Koenigsegg,” reports is likely to be used for the car replacing the Agera, which will be revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. We saw this mythical supercar teased in a silhouette sketch that shows a large rear wing and diffuser, and founder Christian von Koenigsegg said the car will be “more capable than the Agera RS,” which produces 1,160 horsepower from its twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8.

Separately, a rumor from the McLaren Life forum suggests the upcoming speed demon will offer 1,440 horsepower, some hybridization, a higher engine redline of 9,000 rpm and a target weight of less than 1,200 kg (about 2,645 pounds). By comparison, the all-carbon-fiber Agera RS Gryphon does 1,360 hp and weighs 3,075 pounds. The name Ragnarok has also floated around on that forum for a couple months as a possible name.

Should we take these rumors seriously? Who knows. But it’s fun to speculate. Last fall, you’ll recall, the Agera RS set a record for highest average top speed of 277.87 mph in the Nevada desert, and the chase is on for the holy grail of a 300-mph hypercar.

For reference’s sake, the opening events of Ragnarok from “The Norse Myths” reads like so: “First of all Midgard” — that’s the world inhabited by man — “will be wrenched and racked by wars for three winters. Fathers will slaughter sons; brothers will be drenched in one another’s blood. Mothers will desert their menfolk and seduce their own sons; brothers will bed with sisters.” You get the idea.

Those unpleasantries aside, it’s certainly fun to imagine a “Mad Max”-style dystopian movie called “War of the Supercars” starring a Koenigsegg Ragnarok.

Dusty Lamborghini Countach uncovered after decades

Check the attic carefully, because your grandparent’s just might have an Italian supercar hidden in plain site. That seems to be the case with this Reddit user – who goes by the name egriegin – when she posted a photo of one very dusty Lamborghini Countach, with the intriguing headline “Despite the dust and rush, grandma’s 1981 Lamborghini Countach is the coolest.” So what’s the story? Well, don’t get too excited, because the car is not for sale (yet).

Mercedes-AMG wants to prevent Project One owners from flipping them

Mercedes-AMG will include contract language in its exclusive upcoming Formula One-sourced Project One hypercar when it starts delivering to customers early next year prohibiting the new owners from flipping the $2.6 million car for a quick profit.

Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports the move is similar to what Ford is doing with its GT supercar and Porsche, with its 911 GT3 Touring after customers began flipping the 911 R. It also says all 275 examples of the 1,000-horsepower-plus Project One are sold and that Mercedes-AMG has undertaken the first test drives using camouflaged prototypes on closed race tracks in England and Spain.

Late last year, Ford sued wrestler and actor John Cena for violating the terms of his purchase contract, which involved an application process, for the $450,000 supercar. The two sides in June settled outside of court for an undisclosed amount that Ford will reportedly donate to charity. Meanwhile, another 2017 Ford GT is on Mecum’s Monterey sale bill. It’s headed for the block Aug. 23-25.

Similar attempts have already been made with the Project One. Motor 1 reports someone tried to sell a build slot last November for the equivalent of $5.2 million, nearly double the asking price, and a newer listing not yet removed is similarly asking $5.2 million, with a mid-year 2019 delivery date.

The Project One, which debuted as a concept last fall in Frankfurt, boasts some eye-popping specs, with its mid-mounted 1.6-liter single-turbo V6 doing more than 1,000 horsepower, a top speed of more than 217 miles per hour and going from 0-124 mph in just 6 seconds. It can also operate as a zero-emission electric car for 15.5 miles, thanks to its lithium-ion battery powering two 120-kilowatt electric motors, plus two smaller ones driving the front wheels. Owners will have to take the car in every 31,000 miles or so to have the gas engine rebuilt.

1998 Mercedes AMG CLK GTR on Auction

Gearheads with will undoubtedly drool at the once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a piece of racing history as RM Sotheby’s will auction off a legendary supercar. With only 25 units ever built, the 1998 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR is definitely a rare item that will draw the attention of car collectors from all over the globe. Interested buyers are encouraged to register as soon as possible before the item goes to auction on August 25 at the Monterey 2018 event.

What makes the supercar memorable is the development period it took to complete the project from the concept sketch stage to a track-ready prototype (which was accomplished in just 128 days). The mechanics and engineers from AMG reportedly worked non-stop to deliver this beauty in time for the FIA GT Championship.  Its mid-mounted 6.9-liter 630 horsepower M120 V12 engine gives it an impressive exhaust note, according to experts.

It was specifically designed to take on the 911 GT1 from Porsche and the McLaren F1 powered by BMW’s racing technology.  Ultimately, this rivalry turned the race into an intense competition among Germany’s top automotive brands.

Interestingly enough, one of the requirements set by the FIA in order for carmakers to participate in the exclusive event was to produce 25 homologated road-ready vehicles. You can see by now what made models such as the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR one of the most highly sought-after supercars.

The one on offer is still in breathtaking condition with less than 1000 miles on the odometer and comes in a stunning silver paint scheme, a color that appears to be favored by fans of Mercedes-Benz.  Additionally, the paint, drivetrain, tool chest, and booklets are all original. A quick look at the official auction page reveals that RM Sotheby’s expects this exceptional supercar to fetch around $4,250,000 to $5,250,000 after the bidding ends.

Audi teases PB 18 E-Tron electric supercar concept

Audi is set to reveal what it’s calling an “electric-drive supercar concept” next month during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It’s called the PB 18 E-Tron, referring to the Pebble Beach venue and the year of its unveiling.

Beyond that, Audi says only that the car owes some of its technology solutions to the Le Mans-series winner R18 E-Tron and that it was conceived and designed by the new Audi Design Loft down the coast in Malibu. It released a darkened teaser image that shows a road-going car with a squat profile, bulging wheel arches, slim LED headlights and a raised rear spoiler.

The R18 E-Tron racer was a hybrid powertrain. More recently, Audi has been prepping its new E-Tron electric crossover prototype, which was rated at 248 of range on the European WLTP cycle from its 95-kWh battery and dual electric motors, the first of three electric vehicles expected by 2020. It promises to be a “futuristic electric design study for the performance enthusiast driver.”

We’ll find out more when it makes its debut Aug. 23 at the Laguna Seca racetrack, if not before then.

It’s complicated: Watch a Bugatti Veyron get a $21,000 oil change

Here’s a fascinating peek under the hood, or rather the rear carbon-fiber engine cover panel and undercarriage, that shows the complexity of getting a simple oil change for a Bugatti Veyron, courtesy of the folks at Royalty Exotic Cars. Servicing this Veyron Mansory Vivere owned by Houston Crosta costs an estimated $21,000. Jiffy Lube, eat your heart out.

How complicated can it be, you ask? Well, the video is 20 minutes long — and that’s with the benefit of plenty of editing to cut out the boring waiting-around and taking-things-apart parts. Crosta estimates the Veyron is held together by nearly 10,000 bolts, and a heck of a lot of them have to be removed.

Changing the oil on one of the supercars starts with needing specialty GoJack car dollies to get underneath and hoist the lowered body high enough to get it on the shop’s lift. Then, you have to remove the wheels on both sides, rear fender and carbon-fiber panel, carbon fiber wheel-well panels, the fuel filler … and on and on and on.

Also, where most modern cars have one or two drain plugs, the Veyron has 16. The mechanics managed to drain 16.5 quarts of oil from the quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine.

Rather do it yourself? Well, the mechanics estimate the difficulty of the oil change ranked a 20 on a 1-to-10 scale. At least for the first hour or so, until they managed to pry off the rear panel. Then it went to a 6, they say. “After everything’s taken apart, some of this stuff is just plain and simple super easy,” Crosta says. “But getting everything out to get to this point, that’s a couple-day process.”

Interestingly, Royalty will let you rent out a Veyron Mansory Vivere for almost the same price as the oil change — $20,000 — for 24 hours of fun.

Drivers buy new $300K McLaren 720S, 2019 Chevy Corvette, and wreck ’em

Two high-powered, high-priced sports cars, wrecked in their infancies. No doubt they were fun while they lasted.

In Great Falls, Va., a tony suburb of Washington, D.C., that hugs the Potomac River, someone was out enjoying driving the McLaren 720S they had purchased only the day before on a leafy, two-lane road. Then, horror: In an instant, the car hit a tree, mangled and destroyed “because of speed,” according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Then on salvage auction site Copart, a brand-new orange 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport lies in a warehouse in Lincoln, Neb., its front left corner crushed, wheel askew. It had just 15 miles on the odometer. We know nothing of the backstory, except for the obvious front-end damage and secondary damage to the undercarriage. The rear end and 6.2-liter V8 engine, which makes 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, look OK. The most current bid as this was published was just north of $9,000.

It’s tempting in both cases to assign the blame to over-eager drivers who weren’t quite yet able to corral all that power. In the case of the McLaren, the supercar makes 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque from its quad-cam, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. It goes from 0-62 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds and boasts a top speed of 212 mph. We’re not saying the unidentified driver was a newbie, but this car is definitely not for newbies.

Police write that the incident is “A reminder to slow down, or it could cost you.” As in, $300,000. Or at least the depreciation for driving it off the lot.

Bugatti Divo will be a $5.8 million hypercar with an appetite for corners

Too much is never enough, especially when you’re talking about Bugatti supercars. The Divo is the next step in Bugatti’s continuing history of building the most covetable vehicles on the planet. Based on the existing 1,479 horsepower Chiron, the Divo is intended to be lighter in weight and significantly quicker around corners. Oh yes, and it’s almost massively expensive, with a starting price of approximately $5.8 million. If you want one, hurry up, because only 40 will be produced.

“Happiness is not around the corner. It is the corner. The Divo is made for corners,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “With the Divo, we want to thrill people throughout the world. With this project, the Bugatti team has an opportunity to interpret the brand DNA in terms of agile, nimble handling in a significantly more performance-oriented way.”

Little to no details have been released about the Divo ahead of its official introduction this August at Monterey Car Week. The powertrain will likely be carryover from the Chiron, which means the quad-turbocharged W12 will be there in all its decadent glory. The body could be significantly different, however, in keeping with Bugatti’s promise that the car has been honed to go around corners at physics-defying speed.

As for the name, it might conjure up images of a certain 1970s-80s band, but the Divo is named after Albert Divo, a French racing driver who twice won the Targa Florio while piloting a Bugatti race machine.

Nio will run its EP9 electric supercar at Goodwood Hillclimb

Chinese electric carmaker and NextEV brand Nio says it will show its Performance Program vehicles for the first time in Europe, including entering its EP9 electric hypercar in the hillclimb challenge during the Festival of Speed at Goodwood next month in England.

Scottish race driver Peter Dumbreck will helm the EP9 in the Goodwood Hillclimb challenge after breaking the lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife last year. Nio also plans to display a new EP9 chassis and its Nio 004 Formula E Gen2 car during the festival, which takes place July 12-15.

The EP9, first unveiled in 2016, boasts a megawatt of power, or 1,360 horsepower, with four electric motors, four gearboxes, a 0-60 mph time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 200 mph. The EP9 also set a record for fastest autonomous car last year in Texas.

“Whilst we have competed in the FIA Formula E Championship since its inception and have showcased NIO’s single-seater EV technology through fierce competition on the world’s city streets, this will be the first time that anyone has seen the Nio EP9 Supercar run in anger,” Gerry Hughes, head of Nio’s performance program and Formula E team principal, said in a release.

In last year unveiled its EVE concept as a volume sales model at SXSW in Austin. It also launched the ES8, a 644 hp seven-seat crossover, late last year in China.

A bold move that is against today’s landscape is the announcement of McLaren focusing solely on supercars with no future SUV release. Unlike the competition that has ‘sporty’ SUV’s to help fund their R&D, McLaren is having none of it.

AutoNews reports that McLaren will not be following Porsche, Bentley, Tesla, Jaguar, or Rolls Royce(!) in watering down their brand with an SUV release. President of McLaren North America, Tony Joseph, says,

“We have been a company in existence for a long time prior to automotive and we’re a profitable company, so there’s really no need to go into SUVs. We want to concentrate just on two-seat sports cars and be known as the iconic sports car company.”

While that’s the case, McLaren is focused on future-proofing their car lineup, with hybrid configurations on the works in Woking. The makers of the new Senna hypercar reports that a full-electric car is also in the works, but that is unlikely before 2022.

That’s pretty exciting stuff but you think they’ll follow through with it? Or succumb to the pressure?

Ferrari SP38 is the latest one-off creation from the Prancing Horse

Ferrari has unveiled its latest one-off creation, called the SP38, a road- and track-going car built for “one of Ferrari’s most dedicated customers” who has a “deep passion for racing.” Swathed in a three-layer metallic red paint finish for its all-new body, the SP38 is built on the chassis and running gear of a donor 488 GTB and took its twin-turbo, twin-intercooler influence from the F40.

Stylistically, the car concentrates its visual mass over the rear wheels, with a rear spoiler and engine cover reminiscent of the F40, with a wedge shape that narrows toward the front. “In plan view, the strongly tapered nose expands towards muscular wheel arches, giving the car potency and agility,” Ferrari says.

The engine cover sheds its rear glass and is a flip-up assembly done in carbon fiber, with three transverse slats to siphon off engine heat. At the back, the trailing edge of the rear spoiler “links seamlessly with the wing and with the aerodynamic diffuser at the bottom to create a suggestive frame surrounding the tail volume.”

Up front, inset headlights were designed to be as thin as possible, with daytime running lights relocated to a slim bumper lip similar to the 308 GTB.

No word on the SP38’s powertrain, but it seems likely that it’s the 488’s mid-engine 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8, which makes 660 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque.

It’ll go on display to the public on Saturday, May 26, at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como in Italy.

One-off Koenigsegg Agera RS Gryphon supercar crashes again

Almost exactly a year after a rare $1.5 million-plus Koenigsegg Agera RS crashed during testing in Sweden, it’s happened again. To the same, repaired supercar.

Swedish outlet Teknikens Varld reports the crash happened last week after the Agera RS crashed into a ditch in a rural area near the National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) headquarters where Koenigsegg test-drives its cars. It confirms it’s the same vehicle that crashed in May 2017 after the driver lost control of it on the wet track.

According to The Drive, it’s an Agera RS Gryphon, an all-carbon fiber, 3,075-pound beast with 24-karat gold leaf trim that does a ridiculous 1,360 horsepower and 1,011 pound-feet of torque. It was originally built for U.S. car collector Manny Khoshbin before it wrecked last year shortly before delivery.

The Swedish supercar maker reportedly set to work on a replacement Gryphon following that wreck while pledging to repair the crashed model for use as a factory test and demonstration car.

It’s not clear what caused the most recent crash. The reader who submitted the photo said it was clear from skid marks the car had been on both sides of the road. It also wasn’t clear whether the driver suffered any injuries.

Teknikens Varld says it’s believed to be the first time the repaired car had been driven in the open since the 2017 crash.

The Agera RS is the world’s fastest production car.
