9 Things J.W. Hulme Designer Ernest Sabine Never Travels Without

Five or six years ago, New York-based designer and artist Ernest Sabine used to be that guy at the airport — the one bogged down by way more physical baggage than he actually needed to be carrying.

“I used to be a notorious over packer. You should have seen me,” he told Gear Patrol on a recent afternoon. “I literally would have two huge duffle bags, trying to think of every scenario that I could possibly be in. From [needing a] blazer to, what if we do something fancy or formal or whatever?”

He’s come a long way since then, partially out of necessity. His new role as the creative director of the Minnesota-based leather goods brand J.W. Hulme sees him spending one week out of every month in St. Paul — and he now manages to pack everything he needs for the trip into one duffle and a backpack.

“I think high level, my theory is that less is more,” he said. “Maybe I only need one pair of really nice denim that’s versatile, and one pair of shoes. I can just have a few T-shirts and get this down to one reasonable sized carry-on.”

But the things inside the carry-on and backpack he now relies on are just as streamlined as the bags themselves. Below, a look at the things that are always with Sabine on his travels.

JW Hulme Backpack, Duffle Bag and Travel Kit

“One of the first things I did when I started the position was to select a few of their core pieces to really get a feel for how the product functions, how it feels, the weight of it, the functionality of it,” Sabine said. He travels most frequently with the Continental Duffle and the Crosstown Backpack (the smaller of the two men’s backpacks J.W. Hulme offers) because they’re streamlined — and the backpack, which slides under plane seats easily, regularly gets compliments at the airport. “[When] you’re going through airport security or whatever, you don’t want to be bogged down with a million big bags,” he said.

iPad Pro

One element that helps Sabine in this effort is his iPad Pro, a device whose myriad purposes reduces the number of items he has to pack. “I think guys especially are just looking to streamline and carry less,” Sabine said. “I try to fit as much as I can onto the iPad, whether it’s notes, sketches, ideas, saved images. It’s so nice to feel free and less bogged down by carrying huge binders or giant notebooks or magazines. It’s all about slimness.”

Muji and Mish Mash Notebooks

Still, Sabine likes to have a notebook or two nearby whenever he can. “As a designer, there’s something about paper and pen — like a nice brush pen — that you can’t beat. I still like having that on hand, whether it’s in a meeting to jot down notes or to sketch something out.” He also likes the notebooks from Mish Mash, a Portuguese stationer whose wares are sold at Goods for the Study in New York. “I have this hybrid approach where I have the modern, slick thing, but then a good, old-fashioned Muji notebook where I can take down notes.”

Pentel Plastic Fountain Pen

Sabine also finds his preferred pens, a Pentel brush pen called the Tradio, at Goods for the Study. Their flexible nibs can create different widths depending on speed and pressure applied.

Comme des Garcons x Monocle Hinoki Fragrance

Comme des Garcons’s collaboration with Monocle has produced more than one great fragrance, but Sabine likes and wears their first effort, Hinoki. “It’s an amazing fragrance,” he said. “I not only wear it, but I like to spray a bit in the room where I stay. It’s a very masculine smell. If I ever have to check a bag, I get paranoid about it getting lost and not having it on me. I always make sure that’s in my backpack or carryon.”

Dom Vetro Sunglasses

For his sunglasses, Sabine turns to California-based eyewear designer Ashley Bézamat and his brand Dom Vetro, which offers custom shades. “It’s really nice to have a personal, customized pair of eyewear,” Sabine said. “I just throw those on and block out everything, whether it’s the busy airport or the crowded flight or whatever that is, just to have a bit of armor.”

Dotcom Creation DP-2 Wireless Earphones

Over the past few years, nothing much has changed when it comes to earphone design. Sure we’ve seen the wireless revolution take over as most models have shifted to Bluetooth connectivity. However, almost everything still looks like the conventional kind with a few exceptions. That’s why the Dotcom Creation DP-2 intentionally shies away from the normal form factor.

Traditional construction of earphones often comes with a silicone or foam tip. It’s what goes into the ear canal and holds everything in place. This forms a seal that enhances the quality of audio delivered by the drivers. On the flipside, it can also pose a risk to the user since it mostly blocks out background noise. The unique shape of the DP-2 positions the speakers within close proximity to the ear canal and keeps you aware of your surroundings.

Designed by Jun Katsunuma, the wireless earphones are supposed to be worn like earrings. The obsidian black device doubles as a fashion accessory. It clips on naturally to your earlobe with a simple twist. The innovative device is still in its conceptual phase, so there might still be some changes in line before it hit retailers everywhere. It appears that Dotcom Creation literally refuses to follow the conventional mold with the DP-2.

New Balance M997WEB

The New Balance 997 is making a much-deserved comeback. The shoemaker originally released these kicks in 1991, serving as the fourth model in the 990 series. It also ushered the shock-absorbing technology called ENCAP and C-CAP.

New Balance has maintained the shoes’ original style by opting for the original materials and technology used in manufacturing the first iteration. As a result, not only do you get one of the brand’s most iconic silhouettes, but you can also be confident knowing your kicks feature legacy materials.

You already know the New Balance 997 design pretty well if you’re a longtime fan. First off, there’s the classic grey pigskin and mesh upper. There’s also the synthetic cuff, knit tongue backer, navy mesh toe-box, 3M reflective details, and rubber outsole. Finally, what New Balance shoes would be complete without the iconic “N” logo? In this case, it’s in an alluring dark blue variant, perfectly contrasting the grey suede of these kicks.

New Balance released the iconic kicks as part of its Made in the USA series. It reflects topnotch American craftsmanship by combining premium materials with superior comfort. The result is a slick and lightweight pair of sneakers with durable ENCAP cushioning that brings all-day comfort to go along with the iconic style.

If you’re a shoe collector looking to expand your cache with reimaginings of your favorite classics, or just a regular guy looking for the perfect pair of shoes to complete your streetwear get-up, then you won’t go wrong with the New Balance M997WEB.

Discommon Thermoformed Card Wallet 2

Discommon, a company that makes creative accessories for the modern man, created a thermoformed card wallet in 2016 that was as gorgeous as it was functional. That cardholder was so successful that they’ve now released a sequel. Meet the Discommon Thermoformed Wallet 2.

The follow-up bears the same sleek design as its predecessor, but ushers in modern technological perks. For one, Discommon has decided to integrate an RFID blocking layer for added protection against card data theft. The perforated side allows you to still carry a travel or access card that requires RFID transparency.

Discommon also upped the ante when it came to industrial testing, ensuring that the adhesive functions and overall longevity of the Discommon Thermoformed Wallet 2 are up to snuff.

Sure, not much has changed in terms of design. However, we’d argue that it looks a bit better than the one that came before it. That’s thanks in large part to the Italian calf hide exterior and the Japanese micro-suede interior. The result is a stunning wallet that’s thin, lightweight, and sophisticatedly sleek.

Don’t be fooled by the minimalist design, by the way, as beneath it lies an incredible amount of development and manufacturing work: Like the first iteration, this product uses thermoforming and leather laminating to create a wallet that’s durable even without seams and stitches.

The wallet itself can store up to eight cards and an assortment of folded bills, but will never feel like an overstuffed wallet bursting at the seams. You can choose between two variants: Navy with lime highlights, or black with yellow highlights. It’ll cost you $110.

Why the Sweatpants in The Row’s New Menswear Collection Cost $790

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s clothing brand The Row isn’t one of those fashion companies that half-asses anything. The twin sisters behind it started the brand because they couldn’t find the perfect t-shirt. Twelve years later, they’ve perfected everything from jeans to knitwear to leather backpacks and beyond — for women.

It’s why guys in the fashion space got so excited when the Olsens announced they were ready to release a full menswear collection, which focuses on wardrobe staples. They scoured the world for the best suppliers and factories to work with, and chose some of the greatest materials on the planet to use in their debut line. It’s why the $5,250 bomber jacket they made marries supple Italian suede with merino ribbing, and why even the plain white t-shirt in the collection goes for $350.

The sweatpants, which cost more than the Japanese selvedge denim jeans in the collection, are cut from a cotton jersey that’s backed with a soft cotton fleece. They have an elastic waist and a functional fly that’s finished with an actual zipper. They’re what sweatpants look like when taken to their nth degree — and if you’re lucky enough to snag a pair before Mr Porter runs out of them, you’ll never want to take them off.

Limited Edition REC P-51 RTR Mustang Watch

Imagine what it would feel like to wear a Mustang on your wrist. That’s not a typo — timepiece company REC has unveiled the new limited edition P-51 RTR, crafted with carbon fiber parts taken from world champion drift racer Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s 2017 Mustang RTR.

Each timepiece incorporates pieces of Gittin Jr.’s demon drifter, and REC is only putting 350 pieces up for sale. But keep in mind you’re not just getting a run-of-the-mill luxury watch. Every time you put this on your wrist, it’ll remind you of what masterclass-level design looks like. Plus, you’ll chew on the fact that only 349 other people in the world have what you have: a watch forged from a car that helped Gittin Jr. show the world his formidable drifting skills.

The attention to detail REC has put into the P-51 RTR is remarkable. From the crown that features Mustang’s iconic tail-light shapes to RTR’s signature neon green triangular headlights to the rotor meant to evince a custom RTR trim. Such design elements demonstrate a level of sophistication that can’t be matched. REC could’ve easily produced a tacky car/watch hybrid, but thankfully it executed this one perfectly. So, as a result, the watch boasts a very subtle design, but it doesn’t skimp on its Mustang flair.

It’s not all about looks, though. You also get a power reserve of over 48 hours, a casebook glass mineral crystal, and a calf leather strap with a quick-release system. These make the watch as functional as it is beautiful. You have to act fast if you want the P-51 RTR, as only 66 pieces will be sold online. It retails for $1,895.

Legendary Bon Vivant Francis Mallmann Is Best Made’s New Creative Advisor

Outdoor lifestyle brand Best Made Co. has tapped legendary Argentine chef Francis Mallmann as its new creative advisor. The New York-based brand — known for its tasteful collection of axes, clothing and goods for the home and camp — has always sought to inspire customers to live the best lives possible. Its products have always enabled exploration and adventure, so it made sense when the brand teamed up with Mallmann.

Known for open-fire cooking, Mallmann owns restaurants in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, France and the United States. He authored numerous books and hosted a handful of cooking shows. After appearing on the inaugural season of acclaimed Netflix documentary Chef’s Table in 2015, Mallmann has received increasing interest from media in the States. But it’s no surprise. He lives in rural Patagonia and he’s a world traveler. He appreciates time outdoors as much as he loves fine wine. He’s equal parts bon vivant, historian and romantic. Along with being profiled by publications like The New York Times, Esquire and Food and Wine, he also was featured in one of Best Made Co.’s lookbooks in 2017.

As creative advisor for the brand, Mallmann will cultivate a group of global brand ambassadors that best embody Best Made Co.’s spirit of adventure along with lending his expertise and taste to developing new products. To celebrate his appointment, Best Made Co. collaborated with Mallmann on a capsule collection of 10 new products. The range aptly reflects his lifestyle and includes outdoor necessities like a knife and an ax along with stylish accessories like a beret and a bandana. Nothing seems out of place next to Best Made Co.’s current offerings — the brand and the man are a perfect fit.

The collection starts at $98 for the bandana and tops out at $2,298 for a towering steel grill. To learn more about how the collaboration came about and the importance of well-made products, we reached out to Mallmann in Argentina. Though you may not need everything in the latest release, it’s Mallmann’s hope that the products will inspire you to live a bountiful life.

Q: What aspects of Best Made Co. resonate with you?
A: Long ago I met Peter Buchanan-Smith at his Best Made Co. shop in New York while buying half a dozen of his axes. We immediately created a bond over the primal and beautiful tool that grew and ended up taking us on many adventures together in South America over the years. In any partner I look for a connection, and from the start I knew that Peter, Best Made Co. and I all share the belief in the quality of life that comes from being outside, and that a tool or accessory can be a symbol of exploration meant to take you out of your routine and experience this extraordinary life of work and adventure.

Q: What is most important for you to bring to the brand as the Creative Advisor?
A: As Creative Advisor, I will be cultivating a group of brand ambassadors for the company’s first influencer program, as well as supporting creative direction of product design. To me, this role and partnership are a way to deepen our shared belief in the quality of life that comes from being in the wild and enjoying the pleasures of rest, food and friendship, and create products that allow people to start a dialogue with the elements of the outdoors.

Q: How do using well-made products inform a life well-lived?
A: Products that combine craftsmanship and technicality with passion for an outdoor life are what help create a life well-lived. They allow us to be a part of the remote wilderness and experience the pleasures of the outdoors. For instance, our co-designed chair can bring us to sit outside with a cup of coffee and enjoy the crisp fall air or lounge under a tree in Central Park.

Q: As a man who travels a lot, from the remote areas in Patagonia to major world cities, what is most important to you in the products, clothing and accessories you use daily?
A: Since I’m always traveling to different parts of the world and often outdoors, I’m fascinated by how the simplicity of the natural elements — wind, mountains, snow and clouds — create this common spirit that can be brought to life through the utility and elegance of certain products. Something as small and beautiful as a bandana can not only be an object of comfort but a tool for life, and it all stems back to the simple pleasure of being in the wild.

Q: Do you have any favorites from this first collection with Best Made?
A: The grill is one of the signature pieces in this collection and is inspired by the grill I use on my island in Argentina, mainly as a plancha or fire pit to cook with other elements. I also love the bandana — not only for its simplicity but also for its utility and purpose no matter the occasion.

Q: How do you hope people will use these products to enrich their lives?
A: Each piece in the collection is not only an accessory or tool, but also a symbol of exploration meant to take people out of their routine to experience adventure. The collection is meant to give people the tools to start, or continue, this dialogue with the natural elements that’s part of being in the remote wilderness.

VIITA Titan HRV Smartwatch

A few years ago, tech industry researchers and experts envisioned that smartwatches usage will eventually replace conventional models. However, years after the first wearable hit retailers, their predicted scenario is nowhere to be seen. To be fair, a lot of us embraced the innovation and probably have one or two models in our collection. The results of studies and surveys apparently reveal that battery life is to blame for the technology’s snail-paced adoption. The Titan HRV from VIITA will hopefully break the cycle and encourage people to make the digital shift.

Promising a two-week battery life on a single charge, it’s already offering more than the most popular models. Features such as the integrated electrocardiogram of the Apple Watch Series 4 or the rotating bezel control of the Samsung Galaxy Watch are undeniably innovative. However, at the end of the day, what matters most is how long your device will continue to function until it needs a recharge. That’s why VIITA will run on its proprietary operating system to minimize battery consumption.

Other than the promise of a longer lifespan in between charges, The Titan HRV boasts a premium build quality. Luxury-grade materials such as ceramics, sapphire, titanium, and cutting-edge craftsmanship all go into the smartwatch. It’s ready to face any adventure with its 10 ATM water resistance and built-in GPS. Fitness-tracking software and an integrated optical heart rate sensor provide keep users updated regarding their overall health. VIITA plans to officially launch the smartwatch on January 2019.

Everlane’s New Fleeces and Puffers Are Good (In More Ways Than One)

Direct-to-consumer poster-brand Everlane has announced plans to eliminate all virgin plastic from its supply chain by 2021. From an ecological standpoint, it makes sense. According to the brand, there are 8 billion tons of plastic on the planet, a stat that is growing radically every year: each year companies are making 146 million tons of plastic packaging, 59 million tons of plastic textiles and 42 millions tons of consumer and institutional products. To put this mass production in a more serious light, plastic can take centuries to decompose and many single-use plastic products end up in landfills or oceans.

To address these issues, Everlane plans to reduce single-use plastic from offices and stores by 50 percent in the next year and by 100 percent by 2021. By 2019, the brand will ship all of its products in post-consumer recycled plastic poly bags. And by 2021, Everlane will redevelop all of its existing yarns and fabrics containing virgin synthetic fibers with renewed equivalents. To start this process, the brand launched its ReNew collection, a group of puffers and fleeces using renewed alternatives to polyester.

The collection recycled 3 million plastic bottles, turning them into polyester thread. The bottles were cleaned and shredded into tiny flakes which were then melted. The liquid plastic was then formed into long strands which were diced into crystals. The resulting crystals were again melted down and extruded into super-fine thread which was knit and woven into polyester fabric.

Everlane then used this fabric in place of virgin polyester. In the ReNew collection, there are 5 pieces for men: a fleece sweatshirt, a fleece zip, a puffer jacket and two parkas. The classic styles are minimal and quite affordable, ranging in price from $60 to $198. In terms of appearance and function, they’re on par with some of the best brands in the space. But regarding sustainability, they’re leading the way.

How to Hem Your Pants

Whether you buy a pair of trousers off-the-rack or you have a suit custom made, you’ll need to decide how you want your pants hemmed. Though many casual pants like jeans and chinos come pre-hemmed, more formal options need to be hemmed post-purchase. The decision herein is predominantly length, and though that seems relatively simple, small adjustments can completely change the appearance of your outfit.

A good baseline is a trouser that stops at the top of your shoe, and from there you can tweak the length to reflect your own taste. “An inch higher gets very fashion forward and an inch longer gets very conservative,” said Kirk Miller, founder of NYC-based tailoring brand Miller’s Oath. Miller’s garments have a timeless quality, and his experience in the industry gave him a wide perspective on tailored clothing. “I worked for a Thom Browne very early on so I used to wear things at my shin,” he said. “I also worked at Paul Stuart where guys have pooling breaks where there was never any chance of sock being shown. So, I’ve been on both sides of the extremes.”

Along with length, one must choose whether or not they want a cuff. Miller recommends committing to a healthy-sized cuff if you want one. “If it’s smaller than an inch-and-a-half, then why do it?” he asked. Choose between a cuff or no cuff, but don’t try to find some middle ground between the two — it won’t end up looking good.

Many arcane Rules of Style will tell men how they should or should not hem pants based on their body types, but Miller thinks this antiquated and unfounded. “There’s very little that I’ve ever seen that someone can’t do if they wanted to do it because of their body type,” he said. “It’s much more about learning how to do it properly as opposed to not doing it because you aren’t allowed.” While proportions can be more acute on shorter men, it doesn’t mean they can’t have shorter pants or wider cuffs. They should just be more mindful of their entire wardrobe, ensuring their jacket isn’t too long either. “Every suggestion and every ‘This is how we like to do it’ isn’t the only way,” Miller said. “It’s just about owning however you want to do it.”

Timeless

“We like to be really, really clean,” Miller said. “Our recommendation is the top of the shoe.” Hemming a pant so that it stops at the top of the shoe preserves the silhouette of the trouser and is timeless. “You won’t offend anyone with it being too long or too short,” he said.

Conservative

Photo: ts(s)

For a more conservative look, you can ask for a longer length trouser that rests upon the shoe. How much the pant bunches up on itself is defined in simple terms: slight break, medium break or full break. Before you decided to hem your pants with a break, it’s good to consider the silhouette. “If you have a more narrow trouser, if that ends quickly, you kind of have a lot of fabric that doesn’t have anywhere to go,” said Miller. A slim trouser will end up looking like an accordion at the bottom if it is too long, giving a sloppy appearance. That said, there’s more room to play if you have a wider pant. “If you have a wider leg, even if it’s a break deep, you have enough room for it to open and move,” Miller said.

Fashion-Forward

“If you want to be a little fashion-forward and come up a bit, it’s totally acceptable,” said Miller. While Thom Browne popularized a very short trouser over a decade ago, a shorter style hitting at the ankle or above is still very forward-thinking. Browne’s trousers are “a good litmus test” for Miller when gauging how high customers may want to hem their pants. While the style works with a range of shoes, it works well if you’re dressing a suit down with more casual footwear. “If you are wearing it with sneakers, I like it a bit on the shorter side,” Miller said. “Why are you trying to hide your sneakers?”

Top 24 Casual Men’s Blazers In 2018

I

f you’re looking for a way to finish your outfit that’s not too casual but won’t make you look stuffy, a casual men’s blazer is a top choice. Providing a similar silhouette to a suit jacket, it’s far easier to wear a casual blazer as it coordinates with all kinds of outfits. Rather than matching it up with pants, a blazer can be any color you choose. Whether you stick to more conservative colors such as black, grey or blue or switch it up with plaid and printed designs, the choice is yours.

Blazers come in a variety of fabrics, from heavyweight wool to linen, cotton and other lighter designs. This gives you the opportunity to wear them in every season by picking a fabric that suits the temperature. Bear in mind that blazers aren’t designed to be worn like a coat. Simply think of them more like a smarter sweater. Just like a hoodie or a tracksuit top, a casual men’s blazer is part of your outfit and doesn’t get removed once you go indoors.

If you’ve never rocked a blazer before, you’re in a for a treat as there are endless styles to pick from. To help get you started, we’ve whittled it down to 24 of the best men’s blazers for 2018. Check out our list below and find your favorite!

What Are The Main Things To Consider When Buying A Casual Men’s Blazer?

Although obvious, one of the main priorities, when you’re buying a casual men’s blazer, is size. We don’t just mean making sure it fits, but we mean the overall cut and style. If you’re slender you’ll find that your body gets lost in a loose-fit blazer, and it could make you look scruffy. Conversely, larger guys may struggle to squeeze into a slim-fit blazer even if they’re buying their regular size.

It’s important for the blazer to fit properly all over so it’s not always possible to size up or down – although sometimes that will work. However, if you want to avoid looking like a 7-year-old who’s borrowed his dad’s jacket, you’ll need to be careful when automatically sizing up.

You’ll need to know your waist, chest and shoulder measurements, as well as the length of your arms. The sleeves of a blazer should finish around 1/2” short of your hand and sit 1-2” above the top of your thigh when you’re standing. Look out in particular for the fit around the collar, button area and shoulders – all of these places show the obvious signs that a blazer is too loose or too tight.

Some blazers are designed to be a slim-fit which means the armholes will typically be higher, the sleeves may be narrower and with less room around the sides. If you’re blessed with a beefy body you might find that this cut simply doesn’t fit well. You can still get a neat silhouette with a looser style and trust us, you’ll feel much more comfortable if the blazer isn’t cutting off your circulation.

What Clothes Do Casual Men’s Blazers Go With?

Casual men’s blazers have made a comeback in recent years and it’s a trend that we’ve been cheering on here at Men’s Gear. We’re more than a bit fond of the casual blazer and the myriad of options it offers for our wardrobe. Less formal than a suit jacket, a well-chosen blazer can add a touch of class to any outfit, as well as making you look on-trend.

One of the joys of the blazer is that even if you choose a casual style, it’s possible to dress it up for smarter occasions. Team with a pair of slim-fit trousers, brogues, and a shirt – if you’re particularly keen to impress you could add a tie too. The joy of blazers is that they aren’t supposed to match identically with your pants so as long as you pick colors that complement each other, it’s not a problem.

If you’re not dressing to impress, you’ll find dressing down with a blazer offers an endless choice of comfortable clothing. A round-neck T-shirt works well with blazers, but you could also opt for a polo shirt too. If the weather is cooler, blazers are a great choice to add to a sweater but you’ll need a style that doesn’t fit too tightly to avoid looking like you’ve been stuffed in!

Jeans and a blazer are a classic combination and one which won’t go out of style. However, it’s usually better to avoid light-colored blazers with jeans and stick to black, dark blue or grey blazers instead.

What are the main different styles of casual blazers?

There are countless different styles of blazer, with every designer putting their own stamp on the look. The biggest difference to look out for is whether the blazer is structured or unstructured. An unstructured blazer is softer and lacks the padding around the shoulders that you might typically expect. This provides a much more natural look and is more appropriate for when you’re looking for a casual men’s blazer.

There are many different design features which may be included in a blazer and these can determine the overall appearance and whether the blazer looks smart or casual. Pockets are a seemingly trivial detail but they can really influence the design. Many blazers have flap pockets, as you might see with a suit jacket, or sometimes a jetted pocket. These are slightly more formal and work well if you want you casual blazer to be more versatile. Patch pockets are often seen on blazers – these are great for knit blazers and for a sporty, more relaxed look as well as being practical too.

On the back, the question is to vent or not to vent? Some jackets have no rear vents – this isn’t a problem but you might find the blazer feels restrictive. A single vent in the center is one option but many fashion experts say this isn’t the most flattering choice. If you want a vented jacket, the general consensus is that two rear vents, one on either side provides more movement and fluidity, as well as making your butt look better too!

1) Nordstrom Knit Stretch Slim-Fit Casual Men’s Blazer

First on our list is a lightweight knit blazer that’s versatile enough to be worn either smart or casual. Available in two colors, it’s got two buttons and a pop-out pocket square for a classic yet modern look. The textured surface stops it from looking too formal while the slimline fit provides a neat silhouette.

With no lining, this casual men’s blazer travels well and can be worn either on a chilly summer evening as well as during the winter, slung over a sweater. Some reviewers suggested sizing down as the dimensions on this jacket are more than generous.

One of the big names in menswear, Original Penguin have a classy slim-fit blazer that’s casual yet slick. Made from 98% cotton it’s a high-quality item but there’s 2% spandex too, providing a little stretch. This is what makes this blazer so comfortable to wear, making it feel like it’s been tailored for your exact measurements. Cotton does wrinkle easily so it doesn’t travel as well as others but the lined interior makes it feel like a real luxury choice.

Finishing off the design is a small silver-tone penguin button fixed on the collar. Opinions are divided as to whether this is a nice touch or a bit garish. Take a look for yourself and decide…

For a blazer that’s got a little more weight, check out this version from DKNY. Better known for their jeans, it turns out that DKNY can design a pretty decent blazer too. Made from 100% wool, it’s not a lightweight item and with the partial lining you’ll feel like you’ve invested in real quality.

A decent price for a sophisticated piece, this blazer has two buttons, back vents, and flap pockets. It’s only available in black but there’s an excellent range of sizes with both regular and long options in each.

4) Giorgio Armani Mottled Casual Men’s Blazer

Is it a sports’ coat or is it just a casual blazer? This design from Giorgio Armani delicately tiptoes the line between the two with its preppy, more relaxed fit and distinctive coloring. A gray mottled tone, this is very much a casual blazer although it’s also high-quality being made from 100% wool. There are three buttons down the front which means the neckline is higher, which combined with natural shoulders and a lack of vents creates a look which is almost like a cardigan rather than a jacket.

8) Farfetch Andrea Ya’aqov Fitted Casual Men’s Blazer Jacket

This blazer will instantly strike you as different with a more casual appearance and relaxed fit. Although it’s described as “fitted,” this casual men’s blazer is less tailored than many others in our list. Italian-made, the blazer is a wool-cotton blend that offers a combination of warmth and lightweight.

The single button and long lapel line make it a far more casual design and will look great with a pair of chunky boots and skinny jeans. The blazer is finished with two front pockets plus a chest pocket too.

9) Ted Baker Trim-Fit Kyle Wool Casual Men’s Blazer

Exquisite tailoring from Ted Baker makes this blazer a thing of beauty, with the quality evident from just a glance. Only available in teal, the dappled coloring is one of the few details which helps to distinguish this blazer from a true suit jacket. Made from 100% pure wool for a breathable finish but if you open up your jacket, you’ll reveal a gorgeous purple lining.

We’re not quite sure how many excuses you can come up with to throw open your blazer but believe us, you’re going to want to show this lining off. Deep side vents at the back pair with generously-sized patch pockets at the front for a blazer-style that’s one of a kind.

11) Roar Casual Men’s Blazer

If you want a casual blazer to shrug on that’s not too smart but still offers a stylish edge, this offering from Roar fits the bill perfectly. With a single button at the front and large patch pockets, it’s a far more relaxed style. It has a looser fit so won’t provide a tailored silhouette but complements skinny or slim-fit jeans well. Only available in black, it’s not a budget buy as it’s one of the more expensive blazers on our list.

It might, therefore, be shocking to discover it’s made from 100% nylon. That means it doesn’t wrinkle easily and travels well. This is clearly something every man wants, we surely do. Whether on a business trip or maybe going back home to do a school reunion. Perhaps, you’re getting to a party from work. There are so many things this could function well for. We’re honestly not sure we can express our pleasure enough for this item of travel greatness.

12) Tommy Hilfiger Wool-blend Quilted Bib Fancy Men’s Blazer

Where to start with this Tommy Hilfiger blazer?! With such a distinctive design it’s hard to pick out the main features but to begin with, the blazer looks more like a shirt hybrid than a true jacket with four buttoned pockets in the front. Combined with a three button fastening, this blazer has a funky, almost-military look that’s far removed from a traditional style.

Made from a 56% wool blend, this blazer is extra-warm and cozy courtesy of the removable diamond-quilted bib. This attaches under the blazer to protect against the cold, as well as adding a sophisticated touch. Quite the dashing gent!

If you’re packing a few pounds around your middle, this jacket is made for you. A portly cut, also known as an executive cut, provides more room around your waist than a regular jacket. 23) Diesel Jaclin Black Casual Men’s Blazer

Somehow Diesel always manages to find a different interpretation of every trend and they’ve managed it again here. This black men’s blazer is striking and distinctive, offering a fashion-forward take on an old classic. The 85% wool blend is of a high quality but the 11% nylon and 4% elastane provides not just a bit of stretch but also a texturing to the surface too.

A single button can be found on the front and there are no hip pockets, giving the blazer a sophisticated edge with its simplicity. On the back, there are no vents as you’d usually expect to find – instead, there’s an unusual trifold seam arrangement. We’re not exactly sure if this provides any practical benefit but it looks pretty sharp. If you’ve ever wondered what truly modern blazer looks like, Diesel has provided the answer.

You’ll Want to Wear Huckberry’s New Boots Every Day

We’re not sure what conditions are like in your neck of the woods, but here at Gear Patrol HQ in New York, we’ve officially entered what we call Boot Season. It’s a time of year when both the temperature and our inclination to spend time outdoors in said temperature call for durable shoes that work hard and look good doing it.

And right on time for its arrival, Huckberry has released its own line of boots. Their new house brand, Rhodes, features two boots: a cap toe and a plain toe, both named Dean. They come in four shades of brown and feature a stacked leather heel, speed hooks, and a Texon insole that provides both insulation from the cold and shock absorption — in case you hit the ground a little harder than you intended. The rest of the boot is made from calf leather, and each pair is sewn by hand in northern Portugal by a family run factory that’s been making boots for three generations.

Each pair will cost you $220, and Huckberry is positioning them as the kinds of boots you can wear day in and day out. And at this price, they’re bringing a whole lot of value to a category where you can spend upward of $350 on a single pair.

J.Crew Finally Made a Suit You Can Throw in the Washing Machine

Let’s be clear about something: there’s nothing physically standing in the way of you putting your suit in a washing machine — except years of hard-won evidence that it’s just not the best way to get it clean. Washing machines are notoriously vicious things, and while they’re effective at stripping dirt and grime from a variety of materials, their sudsy agitation can do a lot more harm than good to tailored clothing.

But that didn’t stop J.Crew from turning out a suit that you can wash alongside your t-shirts and gym shorts. Its Destination Stretch Performance Suit, available in the brand’s signature Ludlow fit, hit the brand’s site and stores this week. It’s made from a blend of cotton, nylon and elastane. And while it’s perfectly adept at resisting wrinkles, its material makeup means you can throw it in the washing machine when the time comes. (It also means this suit moves with you, can wick moisture away from your body, repels stains and resists water — which a lot of suits made from wool and other materials can’t say.)

You can pick up the suit in navy, black and charcoal at J.Crew stores and on its website starting now.

The Quality of These Washington-Made Boots Is Hard to Top

Nick Blahcuzyn escaped Stalin’s army during WWII, immigrated to the United States and learned to build boots in the Northwest. He founded Nicks Boots in 1964, and the company’s handmade boots became the go-to for hotshot crews, loggers and upland hunters. Based in Spokane, Washington, the company builds some of the best boots available using hand-welted construction and thick, durable leather. It’s known for its four-layer hand-carved leather arch that helps distribute body weight evenly through the foot, reducing foot and leg fatigue.

While a majority of the brand’s boots are substantial and designed to be used in serious work conditions, there are a few styles that are less hefty. The Robert boot is a pared-down version of the brand’s Ranger work boot. Completely customizable, the style has a 6-inch shaft and Dogger heel, and it’s completely rebuildable. Seattle-based Filson did a large custom order and is offering the style in a suede roughout 6-ounce Horween Chromexcel leather upper with Vibram western composite soles. Due to the unique arches, Nicks recommends sizing down one half-size from your normal shoe size.

Now at Filson, you can purchase a pair for $495. While that’s more than you’d drop on styles from Midwestern heritage boot brands, the quality is well worth the price. If you’d prefer to customize your own pair of Robert boots, you can fill out an extensive form on Nicks website (prices start at $467). And for first-time customers, Nicks recommends its Fit-sheet to guarantee a perfect fit.
