We’ve made some new adjustments to Today in Gear, including a new publishing time of 4 p.m. in order to capture all the day’s new stories. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Surprising yourself is fun, frankly, and that’s exactly what’s great about Bespoke Post. The monthly subscription service sends you a variety of premium goods that you’ve probably never tried before, from candles to cigars, waxed canvas bags to a new bottle of Scotch. Each box always has $70+ worth of goods, and for you it costs much less.

Here’s how it works. You “join the club” and sign up for the subscription for under $50 a month. You take a quick lifestyle quiz so that they know what you’re interested in, and then you preview what’s going to be in that monthly box. The boxes are ever-changing, and if you don’t like what’s in a certain box (you have a five-day window to decide), you can swap it for another box on their site. Or you can just skip that month. This way there are no surprises and you’re never going to feel like you wasted money. Also, if you don’t want to commit to this subscription but are still potentially interested in dabbling here and there, non-members can buy any box for $55.

Patagonia Torrentshell Rain Jacket
Save up to 25%: Spring’s arrival signals a change in daylight hours and precipitation and with that transition comes a requisite adjustment of wardrobe: you’re going to need a rain jacket. And if you’re still wearing a heavy plastic rain slicker that causes you to overheat and sweat as soon as your heart begins to beat then take the opportunity of a new year and a new season to upgrade.

Lightweight, breathable water protection is within reach thanks to a deal that’s running right now on Patagonia’s Torrentshell Rain Jacket. The Torrentshell has been Patagonia’s staple rain shell for years and has garnered numerous awards, even earning the top spot on The Wirecutter’s list of “The Best Everyday Rain Jacket.” Patagonia constructed the Torrentshell with its proprietary H2No waterproof membrane and a 50-denier ripstop polyester face fabric to create a jacket with a final weight of 12 ounces. The Torrentshell is also equipped with hand pockets, a deep hood, and zippered underarm vents in case things get toasty.

If you’re looking to save 25% on the Torrentshell, head to Backcountry and select from the colors marked “past season.” Then again, if you’re in dire need of a rain shell and the older styles don’t pique your interest, the Torrentshell is definitely a coat worthy of its full price. — Tanner Bowden

More recently, the brand established its Tribute series, offering affordable takes on the upgraded instruments. Now at Musician’s Friend, you can get the $500 G&L Limited Edition Tribute ASAT guitar for just $400. This Tele-style guitar features an ash body, G&L-designed alnico pickups, individual brass saddles and a maple neck. If you’ve been wanting the bright, crisp sound of a Telecaster, this reasonably-priced option should be at the top of your list. — John Zientek

Alchemy Equipment Top Load Daypack
Save 40%: New Zealand is one of those Goldilocks-zone places where one might ski, surf or hike in the morning and still make it to the office in time for a mid-afternoon meeting. The city to mountain trend is real because of places like New Zealand, where gear transitions between urban and backcountry environments every and perhaps multiple times per day. It’s no wonder that Alchemy Equipment, based in the largest city on the country’s South Island, has managed to create a backpack that truly adapts to any backdrop.

Alchemy Equipment’s 35-liter Top Load Daypack is built like a hiking pack with a sturdy hipbelt and shoulder straps, a lid-style top, side compression straps and heavy-duty ripstop Kodra fabric. The Daypack’s urban-oriented features include a laptop sleeve and seat belt-style straps. But the way in which Alchemy has stylized these components gives the bag a subtle, decidedly non-outdoor look (a lot of black helps, too).

Right now the Daypack can be had on Backcountry for $168, which is 40 percent less than it’s full price. — Tanner Bowden
