This Is the Best Flannel Shirt for Cool Weather. Right Now It’s Half Off

Outerknown Transitional Flannel, $98 $49

Skip the heavy lifting and go straight to what’s best. Just Get This is our no-nonsense guide to the gear you need, now.

Flannel shirts are a dime a dozen. The crowd-favorite style is most often a brushed fabric rendered in cotton, but can be made with wool as well as man-made materials like polyester and acrylic. The brushed quality is what gives flannel fabric its softness and warmth, making it a common fabric for chillier months.

With enough options on the market to render you completely paralyzed, we’d understand if you just threw your hands up in defeat. But don’t wade in despair. Outerknown’s Transitional Flannel is the best overall flannel shirt you can get.

SHOP NOW

That Warm Fuzzy Feeling

The fabric is deceptive. It feels just about as soft as cashmere but is really just your old friend cotton but, like, with a fresh haircut and on an organic diet. That’s because it’s been brushed to buttery soft bliss. The result is a fabric that’s the textile equivalent of that elusive, lovey-dovey, warm fuzzy feeling you get inside, but on the outside.

Variations on a Theme

Because Outerknown knows it’s got a good thing, they made it into over a dozen different plaids and even a few solids. So if your fancy hasn’t been struck by one, it could well be struck by another. Or if on the statistically significant chance that this will be your new fave, you’ll be glad that they made several for you to stock up on.

Perfect Fit

The Transitional Flannel finds the silver lining in the no man’s land between slim and sloppy. It’s perfectly relaxed without teetering into the the geometry of a potato sack but tailored enough to all but guarantee an average daily pedestrian double takes of 6, at the very least.

Value Packed

For just under a hundred bucks, it ain’t the cheapest shirt. But it’s a mega value for the quality. Organic cotton? Yup. Corozo nut buttons? Duh. Gusseted side seams? But of course. If you’re lucky, you can even catch it on sale for 50 percent off for even better value.

If you hanker after a chronograph but still lean towards classic styling, the Fairfield is a timepiece you should take a look at. Its simplistic appearance will appeal to many, offering functionality on a watch which is sized to look good on most wrists.

The best of both worlds kicks off this list as this watch brings a bit of everything. Smart retro design with all the features of a chronograph provides a watch that looks good when worn with a suit, as well as when you’re on the go. For the finishing tough, the clever Indiglo glow feature is included, providing enhanced visibility in dim lighting.

Bright and funky, the Timex weekender comes in 17 different colors so there’s no excuse not to look good. This isn’t your typical smart watch but a younger, more vibrant design that’s very modern in its appearance while still featuring the high-quality of Timex timepieces. The nylon band adds a pop of color which is a pretty unusual quality in a brand-name watch.

This is one of Timex’s cheaper watches and with its smaller face and lack of additional functionality, it’s a pick for someone who only wants the basics. If you’re happy with a watch that stands out for its quirky good looks and performs to immaculate precision, but you’re not worried about any fancy extras, this is the perfect watch for you.

This multifunctional Southview Timex watch is a real gentlemen’s piece with its deep brown leather band and sombre black face. Oozing class and sophistication, this is a watch to wear if you want to show you’ve got impeccable taste. At 41mm it’s the larger side of average, a compatible size for almost every wrist and leaving plenty of room for the three chronograph dials.

While you can’t wear this watch while enjoying a swim, it’s water-resistant to 30m. This means it can survive very brief immersions in water or general splashes. It does have a number of excellent features including a 24hr time, date and day it doesn’t include the much-loved Indiglo. If you plan on using your watch in dimly lit conditions, you’d be better looking for a model which includes the Indiglo backlight.

Timex watches for men come in various styles and this stainless steel timepiece is modern and unfussy. The silver-toned face and band combine in a low-key design that’s not extravagant or flashy. Arabic numerals on a white dial makes it easy to read with just a quick glance which helps as the face is smaller than many others at just 35mm. If you’re not built like the proverbial brick building and instead have a smaller frame, this could be a far more flattering pick.

This watch is splash-proof, scratch-resistant and has the Indiglo backlight, making it an all-round winner for many guys who prefer a bracelet-style metal watch.

What’s more macho than a black watch? A black Ironman watch of course! And that’s what Timex have created here with a timepiece we think is cooler than cool. You don’t have to dig the Avengers or be into extreme sports performance to wear it though; it’s just a sturdy and solid watch which is accurate and well-made.

A watch rather than a chronograph, the Ironman simply provides the time rather than offering a swathe of complicated features. With a dial thats just over 42mm, it’s a bold design that won’t be missed. It’s water-resistant up to 100m and unlike many other Timex men’s watches, you can wear it while swimming. The Indiglo backlight is also included for use in dim conditions.

Finally, the first digital watch on our list; you didn’t think they were all going to be analog did you? However, digital watches are far more than the lazy option as this bad boy shows. Completely compatible with both iOS and Android this is more like a smartphone on your wrist than a conventional watch as it’s packed full of funky features. Track your steps, your sleep and monitor your activity as well as staying connected to all of your favorite social media while on the move.

You can make and receive calls too and the minimalistic touchscreen display makes it easy to use with accuracy. No worries about fat fingers and thumbs here with a design that’s perfectly sized for larger man hands.

If one digital watch wasn’t enough, we’re now bringing you another except this time you’ve got the choice of analog too. That’s right, there’s the option of reading the watch using either the analog face or the digital numbers. This may seem a bit like overkill but it means you’ve got the facilities of a chronograph, including an alarm and timer, combined with the classic styling of analog. You can also set the digital element to a different time zone, useful if you’re working across different coasts, or even internationally.

Available in a range of muted colors, the style is undeniably sophisticated yet robust, with the Timex touch that’s been so popular over the years. Indiglo technology is included in this timepiece, allowing the face to be read easily in the dark.

Part of the Skyline collection, this slimline Timex watch is one of the simplest designs you’ll find anywhere yet also one of the most attractive. There’s an irresistible quality about the minimalist face which bears only two numbers – the 6 and 12 – with the rest of the hour markers using just a basic line. This gives it a retro feel that’s gone full circle and is now very on-trend. Forget about the bling, understated sophistication is the way to go with this little beauty.

With a diameter of 40mm and a thickness of just 6.5mm, this watch is slimmer and more lightweight than many others. This means it particularly suits smaller wrists and frames, allowing it to be worn without looking like a brick strapped onto the arm.

Some of the features you’ll find included are scratch-resistant mineral glass, a 10-year life on the battery, water-resistance of up to 100 meters and an Indiglo backlight for use in low light conditions. It’s smart enough to look good when worn for daily use but it’s also robust, tough and durable too. Another stainless steel bracelet design, this Timex men’s watch is a large and masculine design with a black face. There’s some nifty little design touches such as on the hour hand – look closely and you’ll see a “T” featured in the end circle. It’s not a chronograph but includes the date, which for many guys is the only extra they need.

You can’t go deep-sea diving with this watch on but it is water-resistant up to 50m. This makes it suitable for short swims, but no snorkelling or dives. The hands are luminous and the popular Indiglo feature is included so if you want a watch to wear at night, this could be the boy you need.

The day and date are included in the face and it’s much bigger than many other Timex models with a face diameter of 44mm.

What’s better than one Ironman watch? Two Ironman watches of course – and here’s the second in our list. This is even bigger than the last one: at 45mm it’s a whopper of a watch that will suit the larger guy. Unlike the last Ironman, this is most definitely a Timex sports watch and includes a raft of features that any active guy will love.

These include a 30-lap memory, alarm, countdown timer, 100-hour chronograph and dual time zones. If that wasn’t quite enough, it’s also water-resistant to 100m so feel free to enjoy a swim or even go snorkeling, but no diving.

That’s not to say it isn’t durable as the stainless steel bracelet is crafted to last while still looking like a high-class accessory.

Available in a range of color combinations, as well as with a leather strap there’s something for every taste. The steel bracelets expand to fit wrists of up to 8 inches offering a comfortable fit during wear.

What’s better than two Ironman watches? Three Ironman watches – and here’s the third! The series of Timex sports watches is such a hit, it’s worth including several from the range including this the Ironman Essential 30.

Another larger style at 43mm, this Ironman is a godsend for sporty guys with a customizable alarm, stopwatch, 30 lap memory and the choice of 24 or 24 hour clock. The Woodcrest Drive Timex men’s watch is fairly similar to the previous entry on our list, the Highland Street. It’s another stainless steel band watch with a design that’s elegant and smart. It’s a smidge bigger and there’s a textured inner dial, but there’s not a huge amount of difference in the appearance. Once again the band is expandable, a convenient feature that makes it comfy to wear.

This watch isn’t quite as water-resistant, only offering protection up to 30m. This means while it’s fine for splashes and general wet weather, it’s not recommended for swimming, snorkeling or diving.

Out of all the Timex watches, this isn’t the design for the shy guy. Bold, proud and loud this timepiece has been created to be seen…and of course admired. It is a real thing of beauty with its multifunctional styling, luminous analog hands and black negative display. Silver and black with accents of electric blue, the large 44.2mm face is one of the biggest on this list.

It’s not all about style though, as this watch has real substance too. It offers full chronograph functions including a 24 hour timer, three alarms, a military time mode, a calendar and three time zones. It’s hardwearing and rugged too with a tough resin casing and water-resistance of up to 50m. With a scratch-resistant glass and Indiglo technology, this is the watch for the guy who’s serious about getting active. Of course, you could just rock the look and pretend that you wear it while out on military maneuvers…we won’t tell.

Like some of the other more outdoorsy designs, this Timex men’s watch won’t win any awards for high class and sophistication and would look more than a little out of place teamed with a smart suit. However, for the guy that likes to enjoy the natural world, the rugged design is absolutely perfect.

The hook-and-loop nylon strap is hardwearing and adjustable while the resin casing is more than capable of sustaining a few knocks here and there. The contrast black-and-white face makes is easy to see the time at a glance and in low light, there’s the innovative Indiglo function. At just 38mm it’s smaller than many of the other Timex watches, but the size is far more practical for physical activities.

And last but certainly not least is this classy little chronograph. If you like the functionality of a chronograph but aren’t a fan of fussy, over-complicated designs this watch could just offer the ideal balance. Intended to mimic the architectural simplicity of Bauhaus, Timex have included the practical functions of a chronograph while simultaneously minimizing the unnecessary showiness.

What’s left is a timepiece which offers everything you’d expect from a chronograph in a mid-sized face which isn’t too overbearing. Water-resistant to 30 meters, the all-black design is fitted with the popular Indiglo feature for use in low light. With a perforated leather strap, it’s comfortable on the wrist and we think this is a nifty little number to end on.

BUYING GUIDE & FAQ’S

The Timex brand dates back to 1854 and since its launch has gone on to become one of the leading brands among watchmakers. The combination of attractive design, reasonable price point and solid craftsmanship has created a following of almost cult status.

For men buying a watch, the size is one of the most important factors to consider. Men with a larger wrist should aim for a watch with a dial of 41-45mm. Smaller wrists tend to also suit less fussy styles while bigger watches and wrists have the space for more complex faces.

Before you make a purchase, consider whether you want a simple watch or a full chronograph. The latter has more features including a stopwatch and an independent second hand. For many men, a watch provides everything necessary but if you’re likely to take part in sporting activity you could find a chronograph’s extra functionality is useful.

Where are Timex watches made?

Timex is a real success story of American design that’s gone global, now incorporating elements from many countries around the world. Although Timex originated in the US, and there’s still a factory there, the watches can be manufactured in a number of different locations including luxury designs from Switzerland as well as East Asia, Europe and the Philippines. Regardless of the location of manufacture, the Timex watch is always based on designs and technology developed in the USA and Germany.

There are some collections which are made exclusively in the USA, including those in the American Documents range.

Which model of Timex watches are most popular?

Timex have such a vast collection of styles, it’s almost impossible to pinpoint a single design that’s head and shoulders above the rest. Chronographs tend to always feature among the top-selling designs but the lure of classic analog style is also strong.

However, if we had to pick just one, it would possibly be the Ironman. Released almost two decades ago, this sporty style is a digital timepiece that’s tough and strong yet looks good when worn. The myriad of features included have made it one of the the top-selling Timex watches of all time.

What is the price range of Timex Watches?

Despite its quality and impressive pedigree, Timex are renowned for creating timepieces which are easily affordable. However, they do make luxury watches too and on occasions even design for other brands. For example, a jewel-encrusted $74,000 Versace watch may on first appearance seem to be completely unrelated to Timex, but behind the scenes, Timex were responsible for creating every element.

Of course, this is very much the exception rather than the norm as very few guys are going to be able to shell out that kind of money for a nice watch, regardless of how stunning it looks. The good news is that the regular range of Timex starts at around $40 and goes up to $495. This provides an excellent selection for every price point, offering budget watches which don’t compromise on quality.

What type of Timex watches are available?

Timex watches for men come in a broad range of style and sizes, so whether you’re looking for a posh timepiece for those fancy occasions or a sporty number for wearing out and about, you’ll find your match. As one of the original watchmakers from the US, Timex have had plenty of practice in designing top-selling watches and it shows in the styles on offer.

There’s a classic style about analog and these look flawless when paired with a sharp suit, or smart casual wear. But there’s nothing naff about their digital designs either, offering chronograph functions with a chunky and more urban appeal. Wristbands come in leather, nylon, stainless steel and fabric so whatever your personal preference, you won’t be short on choice.

Time’s up!

Tick tock, it’s time to finish up! Our selection of Timex watches for men certainly throws up a conundrum: with so many striking designs to pick from, which one will you choose?

If you’re looking for technology and a watch that can track your heart rate while you’re working out it’s impossible to see past the iConnect. One of the premium range of Timex watches, it’s still extremely affordable. Its round face means it doesn’t look as clunky as some other smart watches on the market but it still offers the same broad range of functions and compatibility with Android and iOS. For technology fans, the iConnect would qualify as the best Timex watch.

The Ironman range is hard to beat as a traditional sports watch and there’s three included in our hot list of 21. Which one you pick is a matter of personal choice but if you want the fullest range of features and your wrist can handle a larger dial, the Ironman Full-Size Men’s Watch has just about everything that an active guy could need. For those with a smaller, wiry frame the supersized dimensions might be a bit too much but there are two other Ironman watches which are slightly smaller.

The pared-back  style is huge right now; if that’s your preference, maybe you’ve already checked out our guide to minimalist wallets for men? This Bauhaus-inspired design is a chronograph but doesn’t look overloaded or crowded. For some men, this could just be the perfect balance of function and aesthetics, creating a well-crafted modern watch that offers the best of both worlds.

OK, we’ll own up…we can’t decide which of these Timex men’s watches we prefer. There’s not a watch on this list that we wouldn’t slip on our wrist and rock the look all night long.

Like many in this guide it’s made from 100% polyester and has a smooth-knit on the interior and plush-Sherpa on the exterior. It’s got a straight-cut hem, embroidered pull-tab and stand-up collar with a zipper neck. The downside to this is the fact that there’s no pockets.

This Tyndale fleece jacket has so many excellent qualities that you’re going to love, which is why we’re highlighting it next in our guide. For one thing, it’s made from a modacrylic blend that’s naturally flame-resistant. Although most looking at fleeces here will be after one that keeps them warm and keeps the rain out, flame-resistance is still worth considering. What if you’re looking for a fleece jacket for work or are out in the wilderness and have started a fire that gets a little out of control? This will protect you while you get the fire under control.

It’s got a full zipper closure that runs all the way up to its neckline from its hem. The hem itself has a dropped tail that provides additional comfort and warmth and there are three generous pockets. One in the chest and two above the hem, ideal for your hands.

Tommy Hilfiger and their Hooded Performance Fleece Jacket also deserve a spot in our guide. The name Tommy Hilfiger is synonymous with style and functionality. Sure, they’re not the most subtle of designs, but their loud fashion is backed-up by form and practicality that can’t be argued. The Performance Fleece Jacket is made from 100% polyester and consists of a comfortable shell hood that although it’s not adjustable, still provides a snug fit.

The polar fleece-style jacket has a full zipper closure and the waist, hood and cuffs all have elasticated banding.  This gives them a close and tight, but not too restrictive fitting. Although there’s normally a big logo or the name across their garments, Tommy Hilfiger have opted for a small embroidered flag logo on the chest. Subtle, but still a mark of quality.

The Monkey Man fleece jacket from Mountain Hardwear is a very popular piece. Over the years the brand has worked hard to tweaked and fine-tune its design, to great success. At different times this has included updates on the logo, fit and fabric to bring the very best fleece jacket they were capable of. Its most recent upgrade is the one we’re discussing here. It retains the Polartec hi-loft fleece of previous jackets, but it benefits from a far sleeker silhouette and closer fit.

You also still get the benefit, even with this updated version, from the stretchy paneling under the arms and on the side for better breathability and mobility. The finishing is ideal with a stretchy elastane fabric used for the hems and sleeves that not only increases the comfort wearing it as part of a layer system but makes it easier to pack too.

Patagonia have an excellent reputation for producing high-quality and high-performance outdoor garments, accessories and equipment. For instance, we’ve featured the brand before in our guides to the best winter jackets for men. We felt this fleece jacket deserved a spot in our guide because of its sweater-like construction and style. Made from 100% polyester it makes use of heathered yarns, a fleece interior and a sweater-knit on the exterior.

The flat-seams that have been utilized to finish this jacket eliminate the possibility of the seams irritating you and just help to reduce its bulk. Like many fleeces it’s got the practical raglan-style sleeves that ensure you have the maximum mobility paired with the high-level heat retention it offers. The stand-up collar and full zipper closure also help to keep heat in its rightful place, against your body.

Consider the name still commands a lot of respect within people, it’s amazing to think that the Port Authority microfleece jacket is available for a surprisingly low price. However, we’re not going to complain about that…are you? Whether it’s just a little cool outside or colder, this is a lightweight option that can be used as a garment or as part of your comprehensive layering system.

Although many have elasticated cuffs and hems, it feels way more versatile for not having those features in the Microfleece jacket. And the same goes for the pockets, that possibly could do with having a zipper closure, but are fine without. The main thing we found interesting about it, though, is it really a jacket or a jumped-up sweater. For the price, quality and warmth you get though, does it really matter? Is it not just semantics in the end?

Of course, the last couple have been lower in price, but if you’re willing to spend a little to get a bit more in terms of quality of material, performance, durability and comfort, then consider this. The Patriot Jacket in double fleece from Helikon is hard not to love. It’s considered to be the most advanced of all the fleece jackets that this well-liked brand produce. Rather than being designed as an all-activities lightweight option, this has been constructed with extreme weather and tactical use in mind.

Looking at it from the top downwards, for a change, it’s got an integrated hood with high collar and zipper closure that runs from there to the hemline. The sleeves benefit from additional protection from highly effective Cordura fabric. Velcro cuffs and a waistband that’s adjustable via the drawstring and cord lock, this a jacket that’ll keep all heat in. From a practical and tactical point of view there’s a plethora of pockets, two in the chest, two in the upper half of the sleeves, one in the lower half of the left sleeve and a generously-sized one in the lower back region. Don’t let the fact that you’ve probably never heard of the manufacturer 32 Degrees stop you from giving their fleece jacket some thought. We reckon that it’s retailing for too affordable a price to just jump to the next one without seeing what it has to offer first. A hood and scuba-style neck branded frontal zipper pull tab and full-zip closure, and YKK zips are all the hallmarks of a fuss-free, but well-executed fleece layer.

Yes, it’s plain and yes there’s nothing that makes it stand out. Perhaps though, that’s what you really like. Perhaps you’re keener on a jacket that will just do the job it has been designed for in a quiet and comfortable manner. That’s what you get with this offering from 32 Degrees.

Crucially, it’s also breathable, so while you’re not going to suffer the ill effects of lower temperatures if this is on, either as your main jacket or as part of layering, it won’t make you sweat. Back with 32 Degrees for another exciting fleece jacket. This differs from the other garment in several ways. For one, this does not have a hood – so if that’s what you’re after in a fleece, we’d suggest one of the others or even the 32 Degrees item further up. Another difference is the fact that this is lined with faux-fur for that comforting and relaxing Sherpa-style feel.

From a practical, tactical point of view, it’s different in the fact that its chest pocket has a horizontal zipper closure rather than a vertical one. There are also two hand pockets as well, though these do not have zippers, so they’re always accessible when you need to take the edge off those lower icy temperatures. It may be low in price, but it is high in performance.

We’re back with The North Face and another addition to the Gordon Lyons line of fleece jackets. Again, taking its inspiration from Mount Gordon Lyons in Alaska, an ascent noted for how easy it is to complete, this is a very easy fleece to wear. Just because it’s easy and extremely enjoyable to wear, doesn’t take away from its practicality and versatility. As you’d expect from something with The North Face emblem on it, you can wear this whether you’re on horseback, yak back or even just following a trail by foot. The sweater-style knit of this fleece makes like you’re not even really wearing an outdoor-ready jacket.

While it may feel like that reliable and luxurious sweater you love wearing on the sofa in front of Netflix, that’s largely thanks to the thermal insulation it’s capable of providing. A major difference between this one and the standard Gordon Lyons fleece is the print. Really that’s it. So, this is ideal if you weren’t taken by the colors or stylings of the other edition, but really liked its features and construction.

Another entry now from the sportswear overlords at Under Armor is this camouflage-print quarter-zip closure fleece. Once we clapped eyes on it, we knew it was going to be included, it’s just rather handsome and cool. Not to mention the fact that it is a great representation of what UA are all about as a brand – using innovation, design and passion to make the best clothing and gear.

What do we specifically love about this aside from that killer look? Well it’s got a very tight and contouring fit that means it won’t hold you back, whatever you’re doing while you wear it. UA have an enviable reputation also for producing accessories and clothing that stand the test of time and a lot of what you throw at them. This is no different. So, the Hilfiger hasn’t swayed you in its direction, neither has the UA camo-look or the high performance offering from The North Face. We know what you’re looking for. Well, you’d best wait until you’ve at least got this in your hands before heading out to ‘deal with’ the unsavory of the world. A cotton-polyester blend with a soft and almost-luscious (can you be a vigilante with a lusciously-lined interior jacket? We’re voting you can), this is a wonder to wear. Okay, so that doesn’t explain the vigilante-spin. Does the thumbhole cuffs that give you greater warmth further up your arm and the nifty panel that’s sewn to the interior of the hood answer it? Harriton deserve a second entry in this guide due to their ability to make affordable and effective fleece jackets. Made from 100% spun-polyester, this jacket is very plain visually. However, that’s more of a blessing than a curse. The hem is adjustable thanks to the toggles and drawcord, while the jacket in general is very easy to enjoy wearing.

A large part of why it’s so easy to wear is the breathability it gives you. Excellent airflow from the top to the bottom make it the perfect addition to your layer system. The fact that the cuffs are elasticated and will hold their position without rolling up your arm and annoying the hell out of you, makes it more desirable.

BUYING GUIDE & FAQ’S

What to look for when buying a fleece jacket?

As we noted at the outset of this guide to the best fleece jackets for men, there’s a huge variety of different products from different brands all claiming to be fleece jackets of some kind. To help you cut through the crap and find the best jackets that meet your preferences and needs, you need to know the kinds of things you should be looking for when buying a fleece.

This includes:

  • Shape and Fit – It should go without saying that the way clothing fits is ultimately important to whether it’s right or wrong for you. Therefore, it’s important to look at the material, the fit and its shape when buying a fleece jacket as these factors will indicate if it’s suitable for your body type, the way you like to wear fleece jackets and other outdoors garments and whether it will be comfortable enough.
  • Breathable and Waterproof/Water-Resistant – There’s many fleece jacket manufacturers who use special fabric tech to provide their products with some resistance to water and the elements, while remaining breathable. Polartec in all its forms is one such tech.
  • Insulation – Lasts but not least, insulation and heat retention are the primary reasons why you’re buying a fleece in the first place. So, it’s important to look at the type of fleece it is and whether you’ll be warm enough wearing it where you’re going to be wearing it and what you’ll be doing at the time.

What types of fleece jackets are available?

As you’d probably guess, there’s a few different types of fleece jackets. This includes:

  • Standard, traditional fleece jackets – made with 100% polyester that are soft inside and out.
  • Knitted fleece jackets – with a more urbanized, but functional, appeal. They’re very similar to knitted pullover sweaters.
  • High-Loft Fleece Jackets – are fluffier than standard fleece and are often referred to as teddy fleece. Despite their lightweight structure, they’re often still incredibly effective at heat retention due to the fine and long polyester fibers in their design.
  • Smooth-Faced Fleece Jackets – These are considered by many to be the most versatile, thanks to the stretchy fleece and the soft interior that contrasts with the wind-resistant and tough exterior.

It’s Time For You To Search For Your Golden Fleece!

So, there you go, guys, our guide to what’s hot (and dry) in the world of fleece jackets for men this year. You’ll have noticed that all the big names are there – Patagonia, The North Face, Helly Henson and Marmot to name a few. There’s also the designer names that seem to make their way into every area of the men’s apparel market, like Under Armor and Tommy Hilfiger.

It’s not by pure chance, nor is it favoritism that some brands have more than one entry in the guide. Marmot, The North Face, 32 Degrees, Harriton and Under Armor just make some rather fine fleece jackets. What are we supposed to do? Omit some, even if they’re exceptional garments, just because we’ve seemingly leaned too heavily on one brand? Not going to happen! To be completely fair and to cover all budgets though we did include a fair number of budget-priced fleeces.

Whatever flavor of fleece you prefer, whether it’s a rugged utilitarian jacket or one of those that scarcely feel like they’re there at all, you’ll find it above. The UR-220 All Black is the stealthy timepiece we always wanted form Urwerk

It has been a while since Urwerk had a spot on our pages. Thus, we’re happy to see that it’s catering to our love of things in stealthy colorways. The Swiss luxury watchmaker presents the UR-220 All Black. If not for the prohibitive cost, we will snap one up in a heartbeat. This stylish timepiece touts a pitch-black coat with a matte finish that adds to its elegance.

What looks like metal is actually 81 layers of CTP carbon that has been compressed into a robust structure. Another unique feature you can find on Urwerk’s watches is the location of the crown. As for the UR-220 All Black, you can find it on the top where the lug meets the frame.

Much like the other models from the brand, the UR-220 All Black is a visual treat for owners and onlookers close enough to see it in action. As with the others that came before it, the highlight is the sophisticated satellite hours complication. Urwerk is pairing it with a retrograde minute system which is just mesmerizing in motion.

The Arabic numerals on the hour markers and the indices that run along the bottom half of the dial are in yellow with Super-LumiNova for low-light visibility. The power reserve indicators are split in two and each occupies the upper corners of the dial.

As we turn the watch over, it gives us a view of the oil change service indicator and cutouts with sapphire windows. Its case back is fashioned from black DLC-coated titanium. The Urwerk UR-220 All Black uses a UR-7.20 manual movement with a 48-hour power reserve. Completing it is a black leather strap with a  titanium buckle.

The Best Wool Socks of 2020

Good socks are one of those things that will change your life more than you’d think. It may not make sense when you first see a two-figure price tag attached to just one pair of socks. But the upgrade is something your feet will be glad for. You’re feeling them with every step, after all. Once you make your way out of the plastic of the multi-pack cheap-o socks, you’ll enter a world of better-fitting, longer-lasting, more comfortable socks and you’ll not want to step back.

Fresh on the scene, a few thousand years before our timelines switched to AD, socks were likely made not of fur, but of animal hides. They would transition, somewhere along the way, to be made of matted fur, a step closer to the knitted variety you’re wearing right now. Eventually, matted fur stockings gave way to hand-knitted socks and remained that way for centuries before the invention of knitting machines dipped its toes into hosiery around the 1500s. Though this expedited the sock-making process significantly, hand-knitters and their looming obsolescence worked in harmony.

Today, we have more socks than ever. Though we’ve advanced in hosiery tech and imbued socks with all kinds of materials like acrylic, nylon and polyester, the time-tested wool sock is still a great option — maybe even the best option. It’s a top choice when the cooler months make their way ’round thanks to its superior insulating properties. But it’s also a great option for year-round wear. Wool also helps absorb moisture better than cotton, which is ideal seeing as your feet produce about half a pint of sweat every day. Wool also dries faster than cotton, is naturally odor-resistant and even maintains its insulating properties when its wet.

If you’re convinced, as you should be, we’ve done the dug our feet into the research and picked the top wool socks on the market. From the best everyday wool socks to wool socks ideal for long hikes to cashmere socks that look best kicked up on the couch in front of the TV doing nothing at all, these are the best wool socks you can get.

Introducing the First-Ever Taylor Stitch x Gear Patrol Collaboration

Since its founding by three friends in 2008, Taylor Stitch has been committed to creating garments that wear in and not out. Whether it’s a versatile outerwear piece that can handle chopping wood in the rain or that perfectly tailored shirt for a Monday morning meeting, Taylor Stitch builds clothing without limitations for the long haul.

The team at Gear Patrol shares this sentiment — having a product built to last is crucial and can help provide a lesser impact on the environment. It’s what motivates us in our mission of Product Journalism and our belief that great products are more than just the sum of their parts. Equipped with the proper tools, we can more freely pursue our passions, cultivate our interests, and live with greater purpose — these products exist for our life’s pursuits.

For this exclusive capsule collection, we’ve partnered with Taylor Stitch to develop two fresh takes on familiar silhouettes: the Able Vest and the Lombardi Jacket. With an eye towards versatility, these handsome, rugged pieces are fully reversible to ensure you’re equipped for whatever the day throws at you. On one side, Taylor Stitch’s proprietary Boss Duck blend — soft and extraordinarily resilient. On the other, a weather-resistant dry waxed organic cotton canvas in Arid Camo developed by the weatherproofing experts at Halley Stevensons that you’ll be glad to have in a downpour.

Taylor Stitch and Gear Patrol have been intertwined in similar missions for years, and this collaboration is the natural culmination of that mutual respect and the shared belief in the power of great products. We’re excited to finally collaborate with our friends and we know these two special garments will be enjoyed for years to come.

The Velocity Wool Chukka From The North Face Japan Is No Ordinary Wool Shoe

A wool shoe is hardly an ideal choice of footwear as we head into the cold season. It may sound appealing because wool means warmth and thus equates to cozy feet. But the thought of walking on soggy feet is scary. The North Face Japan though fought this idea with its Velocity Wool Chukka shoe.

On the outside, you see a pair of soft wool that is a magnet for the winter elements. But on the inside is a powerful component that keeps water or moisture at bay. This footwear uses Gore-Tex‘s recent invention, the Invisible Fit technology that gives the shoe its weather-resistant quality.

The tech bonds the membrane to the upper to keep the shoe not only weather-resistant but also lightweight and comfortable. This means you don’t have to worry about snow or water seeping inside. The Invisible Fit tech also enhances the shoe’s quick-drying quality and durability, thus making this footwear a formidable chukka that is definitely winter-savvy.

The North Face Japan’s Velocity Wool Chukka also makes for comfortable everyday wear during cold temperatures. It comes fitted with a durable Vibram sole and XTRAFOAM midsole cushioning commonly used in sports footwear (running and training). This pair is also equipped with XS TREK compounds for overall better traction, shock absorption, and stability.

This shoe is great for those unpredictable weather changes. It not only looks and feels comfortable. But it also looks good paired with your everyday casual wear. The Velocity Wool Chukka comes in three unisex colors including brown, black, and grey.

The Best Work Pants to Buy in 2020

So you need some work pants. Real work pants. Not just workwear-inspired designs that don’t take actual labor into account. Yeah, the overengineered heritage-revivalist dungarees made by Japanese artisans have us wading in a puddle of our own saliva, but they’re kind of like using a Chrome Hearts plunger to unclog a toilet.

If you’re on the lookout for a pair of pants that can do some serious work, here’s what to look for and the best options to consider.

What to Look For

Peter Zottolo, a union worker and member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers says that the most important thing to consider is fabric. “You want something that will hold up to crawling around on concrete, rebar, and tie wire,” he says. “Double or triple stitching is good to have as well, but everyone from the cheapest to the most expensive has this. Really, the fabric is everything, with comfort right behind.” Most work pants will use thick duck canvas or heavy denim which are both known for their durability. Ripstop is also a great option that tends to be lighter weight and well-suited for warmer climates.

Knee protection is also important. Most often, that means some kind of fabric reinforcement or sewn-in knee pads. Many manufacturers offer pants with double fronts that allow you to insert your own knee pads.

Pockets shouldn’t skimp out on carry capacity. Utility pockets should be roomy enough to carry your tools and there should be enough of them for the kind of job you’re working. Cargo pockets are great for smaller items if you’re not lugging a toolbox with you. If you need to wear a tool belt, pants with more and wider belt loops are better for durability.

What to Avoid

You might think that ultra-heavy fabric would be the play. But fabrics heavier than 14 ounces can cause you to overheat, especially if you live in milder climates. Instead, most good work pants use fabrics in the range of 10 to 14 ounces.

As far as fit is concerned, much of that is left to preference. Pants that are too slim can limit your range of motion and aren’t as comfortable to wear when the job requires maneuvering tight spots. On the other hand, if you get pants that are too baggy, the extra fabric can get caught in machinery.

Fits to avoid? “High rises,” Zottolo says, “unless you actually wear your pants at your navel. Otherwise, a high rise worn low makes working, crawling, bending over a nuisance.”

Best Overall Work Pants

Caterpillar’s popular work pants are a go-to option for carpenters and construction workers. It’s made from a durable poly-cotton duck canvas and is replete with cargo pockets and utility pockets. The thoughtful construction includes a gusseted crotch, articulated knees and 900D reinforced trim at the knees and other areas of wear like the pockets and hems. At just above 50 bucks, it offers a hell of a lot more than many options on the market.

Best Upgrade Work Pants

“If you are doing actual construction work, you’d be hard pressed to find a better double-knee pant,” Zottolo says. The new kids on the jobsite have made a good impression in just four years. For starters, their Cordura Stretch Nyco fabric is up to ten times as abrasion resistant than traditional duck canvas, dries twice as fast and is coated with a finish that repels water, oil and stains. The stretch fabric in combination with the articulated knees and gusseted crotch make it one of the most comfortable work pants out there. The pockets are super generous and cut for easy entry. And it’s made stateside.

At nearly 13 ounces, the fabric on these is already fairly weighty. They come with double knee panels, each with its own pen slot, rear patch pockets, slanted front pockets, copper button fly. Plus, the double-needle stitching and bartack reinforcement makes sure you’ll have them for the long haul. They’re a touch slim compared to most work pants, which may turn some off. Affordable Fall Outfits to Buy Now

Clothes are tight, but so is money. If you’re sure as hell you’re not missing out on the best season for style but only have so many schillings devote, don’t worry. I’ve solemnly sworn myself to serving you as your digital personal shopper. So, I’ve got a handful of autumnally appropriate and fiscally responsible(-ish) fits for you to snag. It’s a swathe of sale section gems and eBay nuggets in a few different style camps, each aimed at getting you your personal fit for pittance.

A pair of washed out jeans and a sweater with some chunk are like the base components for a good sandwich. They’re the bread and protein. How you dress it up from there is up to you, but some kind of over shirt is like adding bacon to the mix. Accessorizing with a beanie is almost a given during this season, but just because temps have dipped doesn’t mean Birkenstocks are out of the picture. Had we thrown in a pair of boots, this outfit would have signaled typical Americana workwear lumberjack frequency. Sliding on a pair of suede clogs and marled socks instead tunes into creative Brooklynite. While we know Birks don’t hit the sale section, like, ever, you can troll eBay where there are Bostons aplenty.

REC Watches gives Land Rover fans a collection of their own called the RNR

In order to stand out from the sea of options available when it comes to wristwatches, some brands opt to stick with unique themes. There are those who focus on the movement’s accuracy, while others choose to stick with premium materials and craftsmanship. After all, building one takes skill and an eye for detail. One such company that makes its mark in the watchmaking industry is REC Watches. Its latest – the RNR – embodies elements from an iconic SUV.

We mean that in a literal sense given that each RNR sources its material from a classic Land Rover. As REC points out, the initials stand for “Road Not Required” which is actually fitting. After all, the vehicles that roll out of the British marques factories are tough enough to tackle most off-road challenges. Thus, it’s only fitting that timepiece that it inspired is as rugged yet remains stylish to a certain degree.

The formula REC follows regularly gives us automotive enthusiasts a good reason to invest in their wares. There are two versions available: The RNR Beach Runner and the RNR R.O.C.K Fighter. Although both share some similarities, the Land Rover where it salvages the materials from are different. The former gets it from a 1981 Series III and the latter gets it from a 2003 Defender.

The stainless-steel square case and round dial combine for a retro aesthetic. Next-up is the dial which the manufacturer crafted out of various sections of a Land Rover. Despite the visual differences, both RNR models use a Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. As with most collections available form REC, the watches are a must-have for motoring enthusiasts and watch collectors alike.
