Buying Smart Light Bulbs for the First Time? Here’s What You Need to Know

The first thing to know is that, compared to other smart home tech, smart light bulbs are simple. They’re almost exactly the same as conventional LED bulbs, but with a whole host of added benefits.

The Advantages of a Smart Bulb

You can do a host of other neat things with smart light bulbs that you simply can’t conventional LED bulbs, too. Most of them have to do with control.

Remote control: You can turn smart lights on or off even if you’re not home. All you need to do is have your smartphone connected to Wi-Fi or LTE, and a compatible smart home app at the ready.

Create schedules: You don’t need to turn your lights on or off manually. With schedules you can set them to turn off or on (or otherwise change their settings, at a certain time every day or night. If you have multiple smart lights you can have them all set to the same or different schedules, too.

Create scenes: A “scene” or “room” in the context of a smart home is a group of devices all working together. For example, you can group the three smart light bulbs that are located in your bedroom together, name them “Bedroom,” and then turn them all on or off with a single voice command: “Hey Google, turn off bedroom lights.”

Brightness control: Not every smart light bulb is dimmable, but many are. Dimmable smart light bulbs are neat because you can adjust the brightness without having to adjust a physical dimmer. You can adjust it via an app or using voice commands.

Energy efficient: The vast majority of modern light bulbs are LEDs, and that includes most smart light bulbs. They’re naturally more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, but the fact that they’re smart means you can always check on them; if you’ve left a light on by accident, you can turn it off from anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or LTE connection.

What to Look Out For

There are many different smart light bulbs that you can choose from in 2020. Not all of them work the same way or have the same capabilities, however. Here are some common questions to ask when considering your choice.

Does it need a hub? Some smart lights connect directly to your home’s Wi-Fi network so  you can easily control them straight from your smartphone or with a voice assistant. Others, require an extra piece of hardware, like a hub or a bridge, to do the exact same thing. Knowing if the smart lights will need extra hardware, which also adds an extra expense, is one of the most important things before investing in smart lights.

Is it compatible with your other gear? The other big important thing to consider before buying a smart light bulb is knowing whether it will work with your home’s smart ecosystem. Not every smart light is compatible with Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s HomeKit, the Google Assistant or IFTTT, so you need to check beforehand.

What do you want for light color and temperature: If you’re willing to spend a little more, you can buy smart lights that have various colors and temperature effects. For instance, Philips Hue’s White And Color Ambiance smart bulbs can shine in millions of different colors and various shades of white light. These smart lights can also adjust the temperature of the light throughout the day, which can help you better wake up or fall asleep.

Smart Lights or Smart Switches/Outlets: Which to Choose?

Smart lights are great smart home products but they aren’t great in every scenario. For example, an area in your home that has multiple lights controlled by a single light switch probably isn’t a great situation for smart lights. A better solution for such a scene, like a large family room with lots of overhead lighting, would be to buy a smart switch instead, such as the Wemo Light Switch, instead.

Smart switches are generally a little cheaper and can be used to control the “dumb” lights that you already have. This also means that you can use smart switches to control any light bulb. On the downside, smart switches usually require more installation — typically some light wire-work — and they can’t be used to create scenes. While most smart light switches are able to dim the lights, they definitely can’t adjust the color or temperature like you’re able to with a lot of smart light bulbs.

The Best Smart Bulbs You Can Buy Right Now

Philips Hue White

Best Starter Bulbs: Philips Hue makes the most popular smart bulbs. The company’s “White” smart bulbs can’t produce the many shades of color as the “White and Color Ambiance” smart bulbs, but they’re cheaper, still dimmable and work in much the same way.

Compatibility: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant
Smart Hub? Optional

Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance

Best Multi-Color Bulbs: These are the best option for people who really want to play around with all the customization options smart bulbs have to offer. Like the company’s “White” bulbs, they work with pretty much smart home ecosystem and you can control them with your voice. The big upside with them is that, via the app, you can adjust the smart lights to change to one of 16 million colors and shades of white. The downside is that you need to use the Hue smart hub (included in the starter pack) to get the most out of them.

Compatibility: Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings
Smart Hub? Yes

Wyze Bulb

Best Budget Bulbs: At just $8 a piece and even cheaper in packs, you’re not going to find a more affordable smart bulb than the Wyze Bulb. And it’s actually pretty versatile to boot. It’s compatible with both Amazon’s and Google’s smart speakers. You can adjust its brightness and color temperatures (from warm to cool). And if you use Wyze’s other smart home products, you can have the Wyze Bulbs perform tricks like lighting up when certain sensors are triggered, like when motion is detected by a Wyze Cam.

Compatibility: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT
Smart Hub? No

|

Ikea Tradfri

Best Decorative Bulbs: Ikea’s first smart filament light bulb is beautiful, dimmable and relatively affordable. Its tinted glass helps create a warm, moody light. The only downside is that you’ll need to buy a smart hub, the Tradfri gateway ($35), to get the most out of it, such as the ability to control with voice controls or work with Ikea’s ecosystem of smart home products (consisting of motion sensors, LED light bulbs and some light panels).

Compatibility: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit)
Smart Hub? Yes

This Is the Best Smartwatch for iPhone Owners

The Apple Watch has been the best smartwatch for anybody with an iPhone for years, but it feels like the fifth-generation model, the Apple Watch Series 5 ($399+), has the most to live up to. That’s because its predecessor, the Series 4, set the bar so darn high. It was the first Apple Watch to look different, with a larger edge-to-edge display and a thinner, lighter body; plus Apple gave it a bunch of innovative features (like fall detection and an electrical heart sensor) and basically upgraded it in every way.

Now that the Series 5 is here, you’ll notice that it looks strikingly similar to the Series 4. It’s the same size and thinness; it has the same rotating crown dial with a little red circle; and it has many of the same sensors and health tracking features. But the differences are there. The Series 5 is the first Apple Watch to have an always-on display. It’s the first Apple Watch to have a built-in compass. And it’s the first Apple Watch to come in four different finishes, including aluminum, stainless steel, ceramic and all-new titanium.

The Apple Watch Series 5 is available in GPS-only and cellular models, and starts at $399.

|

The photographed Apple Watch Series 5 has the all-new titanium case. It’s a 44mm model and goes for $849.

The Good: The always-on Retina display is the standout feature of the Series 5. Even for people who have worn an Apple Watch for years, like myself, it’s going to feel like a big deal because it actually changes the way you interact with the Apple Watch. With the always-on display, there’s no need to rotate your wrist to see check the time or see that your workout is still tracking – it’s just there. It also will probably prevent many social faux pas that were caused by previous Apple Watch models; seeing other person check the time or look at their watch can be distracting, after all.

It’s true that the always-on Retina display is always-on, but it’s not always bright. The watch face still lights up when you raise your wrist, just like it did with the Series 4, but it then transitions to an idle dark mode when you lower your wrist back down; what’s happening is that the display’s refresh rate gets lowered to one screen refresh per second (or 1Hz), which allows the Series 5 to use very little battery life and give the appearance of always being on. This allows the Series 5 to get the same full-day battery life as its predecessor. Apple updated all its old Apple Watch faces so they work with the Series 5’s always-on display – pretty cool – plus they added quite a few new ones, too.

The Series 5 is the first Apple Watch to have a built-in compass. There’s a dedicated compass app on the Series 4, but other Apple Watch apps, like Apple Maps, take advantage of it.

As mentioned before, Apple is offering the Series 5 in more options than ever. The aluminum version of the Series 5 is the most affordable and is the only one that can be purchased without cellular. The stainless steel version is heavier and more durable, so it feels more premium, but it starts at $699. The brand-new titanium version is significantly lighter than the stainless steel version, and it’s also more scratch-resistant, corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic. And then there’s the ceramic version, which a high-end material that’s usually reserved for luxury watches. If you purchase any Series 5 through Apple Watch Studio (meaning online or in an Apple Store), you can pair it with almost any watch band you want (there are some restrictions).

The Series 5 is the first Apple Watch to have a built-in compass. There’s a dedicated compass app that you can access, which I rarely used, but the real benefit of the compass is how it works with other Apple Watch apps, such as Apple Maps. For example, when you’re using Apple Maps you can now see which direction just by looking at your Series 5. You’ll see the “field-of-view cone” rotate with direction you’re looking, which makes Apple Maps on the Series 5 feel way trustworthy. (Previously, you’d have to take out your iPhone to get the same sense of direction.) For those who are easily disoriented when navigating from A to B, like me, or have difficulty grasping your bearings when getting off the subway – like me – this new Apple Watch feature will save you a headache and a five-minute walk in the wrong direction.

The best part of the Series 5, and maybe you’ll roll your eyes, is that it feels like an Apple Watch – familiar – and it has all the best features of the Series 4. You can still pair it with your AirPods and listen to music sans iPhone. It still has the heart rate sensors and built-in ECG. It still has fall detection and Emergency SOS. It still has a GPS and it can track your runs. It’s waterproof enough so you can wear it swimming. It still tracks your steps and other metrics so you can complete your activity rings. And, of course, it works super well with iMessage.

The last thing to note is that all Series 5 models have 32GB of internal memory, which is actually twice as much as the 16GB on the Series 4. This might not be a huge deal for people who don’t plan on downloading music or a bunch of extra apps on the Series 5, but if you do, or if your current Apple Watch is already nearing its max storage, it might make sense to upgrade to the Series 5.

Who It’s For: Any iPhone owner who wants Apple’s best-ever smartwatch. Or if they desperately want an Apple Watch with an always-on display. Or if they want one of the Series 5’s higher-end finishes (and they’re willing to pay for it). The last big reason to get the Series 5 is if they’re going to take advantage of the Series 5’s built-in compass.

Watch Out For: No matter which Apple Watch Series 5 you buy, aside from the obvious difference between cellular and GPS-only models, they’re all going to have the same functionality. That means that the $1,300 ceramic model and the $399 aluminum model are built with the same internals and will keep track of the same metrics. There’s little downside to getting the cheaper models, other than how their aluminum finish looks and feels. (Although the stainless steel and titanium models are slightly more durable.)

One thing that I’ve been hoping for awhile is that the Apple Watch will start playing better with Spotify. Yes, there’s a Spotify app for the Apple Watch. And yes, if you have an LTE model you can stream music, but I wish the Spotify app would allow you to download albums and playlists for offline listening, similar to what several Garmin and Samsung smartwatches can do. As with previous Apple Watch models, the Series 5 is really only designed to download and store playlists from Apple Music.

Alternatives: The Apple Watch Series 4 is the most obvious alternative, but Apple did something a little bit sneaky this year – they stopped selling it. You can still purchase the Series 4 for third-party sellers like Amazon or Best Buy, for a slightly discounted rate. The Series 4 looks and feels (especially the aluminum models) very similar to the Series 5, and it’s a great option for Apple Watch wearers who don’t need always-on display.

If you don’t want to pay that much for a Series 5 (or Series 4), Apple is still selling the Series 3 but it lowered the starting price to just $199 – it’s undoubtedly the best entry-level smartwatch for people with an iPhone. The trade-offs are pretty clear, however, as the Series 3 doesn’t have the large nice display, the slim design or the many fancy sensors that enable a lot of the Apple Watch’s newer features. The Series 3 does have a built-in GPS and it’ll still accurately track your runs.

Verdict: The Apple Watch Series 5 is undoubtedly the best smartwatch that Apple has ever made, and it comes with the feature – an always-on display – that most people having been asking for. That said, with a few spec bumps and a few new capabilities, the Series 5 is admittedly an iterative upgrade over last year’s Series 4. If you’re not swayed by the premium materials, like the new titanium case, it really comes down to Series 5’s always-on display and how much you want it.

iPhone 11 Pro Review: Hands Down, The Best iPhone Ever

The most compelling and conspicuous feature of the iPhone 11 Pro is its triple-camera system, and after using it for the better part of the week, it’s definitely the best and most versatile set of cameras that Apple has ever put in any iPhone. The ultra-wide lens will feel like a pretty significant upgrade for anybody who has an older iPhone, but as the iPhone 11 has it too, it really comes down to the telephoto lens and how if you’ll take full advantage of it. This extra lens enables the two Pro models to take two different kinds of Portrait Mode photos, one that is really zoomed-in (which is similar to what the iPhone XS could do) and one that is more zoomed-out (which is exactly the same Portrait mode as the iPhone 11) for those who want to grab for background in the photo. If you find yourself taking a lot of photos of people and pets, rather than landscapes, this extra telephoto lens feels like a real selling point.

The nice thing about all three lenses is that they all take the same quality photo. Each is a 12-megapixel camera that has its own high-quality sensor, so you can expect a pretty decent photo nobody which lens you’re using (this is not the case for most other smartphones with a multi-camera system). Each of the three lenses is capable of shooting 4K video at 60fps, which is a nice feature for vloggers and videographers to have. It’s worth noting that despite the extra lenses, like the iPhone 11, the Pro’s Night Mode only really works while using the wide lens (you can technically use Night Mode with the ultra-wide lens, but it’s really just a blown-up shot taken by the wide lens.

Night Mode on the new iPhone 11 Pro is pretty incredible.

Aside from the size and triple-camera system, the third big selling point of the iPhone 11 Pro is its hardware. Its OLED display is significantly better than the LCD display of the iPhone 11, but it’s also better than the Super Retina display of last year’s iPhone XS; the new “Super Retina XDR” display is brighter (1,200 nits versus the iPhone XS’s 600 nits) with double the contrast ratio. It’s easy to get lost in the tech jargon, but the bottom line is this: iPhone 11 Pro’s display is the best and brightest display ever in a smartphone. So if you’re somebody who plays a lot of mobile games or streams lots of shows on your iPhone, that’s a good reason to upgrade to the Pro.

Battery life is the last big reason to upgrade to the Pro if you have an older iPhone. To date, the iPhone XR has been the gold standard of long-lasting iPhones, getting almost two days of juice, and the iPhone 11 Pros are almost at that level. Apple claims that both iPhone 11 Pros get four and five hours better than their predecessors, the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, and it’s actually pretty noticeable. The secret to the improved battery life is, yes, the A13 Bionic chip helps with energy efficiency, but Apple also put a slightly larger battery in its newer phones. This is a pretty significant thing, as it also means that the new iPhones are ever-so-slightly heavier and thicker – Apple is sacrificing design for usability, which is actually a breath of fresh air.

There are a quick few things to add to round out the “good” features. Apple says the Face ID is 30-percent faster on the new iPhones and even better at recognizing your face when resting flat on a table; however, in the week I’ve had the phones I’ve actually had a difficult time telling the difference – it’s still fast. Apple also improved AirDrop on the new iPhones, allowing you to point your iPhone at other new iPhones and AirDrop files to whomever you’re pointing at (although the iPhones must have Apple’s new U1 chip and iOS 13). And, finally, Apple is including an 18-watt USB-C wall adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box, which makes the iPhone 11 Pro feel a little bit more “Pro.”

Apple’s New TV Streaming Service: Here’s What We Know

If you’ve been on the news pulse, you’ll know that Apple has shared some exciting announcements. This week alone, it’s released new, updated versions of the iMac, iPad and AirPods. Basically, it got all its new hardware announcements out of the way to clear the air for a big event it’s hosting on Monday, March 25th, when it’s expected to unveil a brand new video streaming service.

There’s long been speculation that Apple would throw its hat in the ring with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu. It made waves at CES this year when it announced partnerships to integrate its HomeKit and AirPlay into pretty much every new smart TV coming out in 2019, meaning users won’t need an Apple TV device to access Apple TV services. And it’s been producing its own content, like Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps with varying levels of success.

Content is key with any new video service, and it’s been reported that Apple’s budget for original content is more than $1 billion, which it’s spent to produce an expansive list of films and shows (you can read it in full at The Verge). It’s a big chunk of change, but it’s not much in comparison to the estimated $8 billion to $13 billion Netflix reportedly spent on original content in 2018, and is dwarfed by the $15 billion it could spend in 2019.

But notably, it’s anticipated that Apple’s video service will include partnerships with other premium subscription services. According to a recent Recode article, “it will also be able to offer its own bundles — for instance, it could offer a package of HBO, Showtime and Starz at a price that’s lower than you’d pay for each pay-TV service on its own.” There’s also a chance that Apple could bundle its other services, such as Apple Music, with its TV subscription plan.

Still, we don’t exactly know what Apple’s streaming video service will look like or how people would access it — there’s speculation that the service would be integrated into Apple’s TV app, although there’s currently no TV app for Mac. Another thing we don’t know is how much the new service will cost. A monthly charge of $10 seems like a safe place to start, but given that there will likely me copious bundle deals, it could easily cost more.

While there a lot of questions that won’t be answered until Monday, you can catch up on what we know for sure about its new hardware through the links below.

Top 27 MacBook Pro Sleeves (13-Inch And 15-Inch)

S

ince it was released, the MacBook Pro has been the choice of many students, employees, and business owners. It is particularly popular with those who want a high-powered machine with portability. However, when carrying it, you want to protect it as best as possible. That is why MacBook Pro Sleeves have become so dang popular.

The benefits of a MacBook Pro are various. It’s one of Apple’s flagship computer systems, after all!

All Apple does is make great products, however, they can be expensive items. If you own a MacBook Pro laptop, you should be concerned with how you’re going to carry it around and store it when it’s not in use.

Think about what you’re doing if you’re carrying it around without a sleeve. It’s like having a finely tailored suit you don’t take care of. What if you just shoved your suit in any old drawer or wardrobe without a care in the world? You’d just throw all that money you spent into the wind!

If that made you cringe or get angry at the carelessness you just read, take a breath. It was surely nightmarish, but it’s quite similar to the situation we mentioned. Thus, you really need to invest in the right kind of storage for your MacBook Pro.

The question you may have is, what type of sleeve should you invest in? Have no fear, the merry team from Men’s Gear are here to help you out.

In the following guide, we’re going to dissect the subject bit by bit. Before looking at a wide selection of the best MacBook Pro Sleeves available right now, we’ll also discuss why we feel you should choose one case over another. We’ll also go over other important considerations you need to make too.

What are the Main Benefits of a MacBook Pro Sleeve over a Case?

You may wonder why you should invest in a sleeve rather than a case. Although your case or bag may be good quality and handy for the rest of your things, there are many specific benefits you can get from using a sleeve. The thing about bags and other forms of transporting your MacBook Pro is that they might be useful, but they’re not 100% helpful.

Their concern is simply carrying most of the time. Since bags often are made for simply getting things from point A to point B, the device isn’t the #1 thing in mind. Keep in mind, several laptops can be carried in these bags. However, many models can be more robust than the MacBook Pro when it comes to how it’s made.

While these computers are amazing, no one will confuse them for being huge with the computer being able to take care of itself. This just isn’t what they do. Meanwhile, some Windows Laptops are actually made much better in this department.

However, they are also cheaper and easier to replace. Why take a risk even if it was a tough computer? It costs $2,000!!

That said, we wanted to go over why sleeves are more beneficial than just a carrying case you might get for a few bucks at a swap-meet.

Protection:

The most obvious benefit of choosing a sleeve is protection. Laptops, especially new generation MacBook Pros are extremely expensive and complex equipment. With that in mind, they need to be handled with caution and care, particularly if you want to get as long a life out of them as possible.

Laptop sleeves stop the lint that gathers at the bottom of your briefcases and bags coming into contact with your computer. As some have water-repellent surfaces and properties, they also provide your valuable device from damage that rainfall and spillages can cause.

Not all laptop bags are waterproof or even water-resistant. Nor do any of them stop particles from entering. Heck, most still have food in them somehow. You never ate around it, but it found its way in there. Concerned? You should be. These MacBook Pro sleeves stop both of the above problems.

Lightweight and Convenient:

While you may use a bag or briefcase most of the time, there are other times when you just want to pick up your laptop from one location and bring it to another. Bags and briefcases can be bulky and heavier than you may want to carry with you.

This is especially true if you’re just taking a trip to the local coffee house to work on that school project of yours.

It’s even great for taking to your office to work on that sales proposal. Overall, the MacBook Pro sleeves are made to be light and convenient to allow you the ease of just sliding the computer in it and going. Due to this, they can be really easy to carry and this can be very helpful.

Especially if you have other things you need to carry.

Slick and Stylish:

While good looks aren’t everything, but remember this not just now but later in life. A flashy Italian sports car deserves a contemporary and cutting-edge space to store it. Thus, it follows that a slick laptop like the MacBook Pro deserves a nice and useful sleeve to slip into.

Most of these sleeves come in great looks and designs. This means no matter what, people won’t look at you weirdly for having one. This is obviously great, but if you look good along with it…that is just added aide provided.

The Amount of Bulk MacBook Pro Sleeves Should Add:

While it definitely will depend on the model you buy, as no two MacBook Pro sleeves are completely alike, they won’t add too much bulk. Sleeves, as you’d imagine, are designed to be as compact and slim as possible so that they don’t make it harder to carry around your laptop.

It would hardly be advantageous to have a sleeve that, rather than making it easier, actually made carrying a laptop around harder. To help avoid the bulkier options out there, we made sure to continue discussing things. Check out our next few questions on that.

One thing to keep in mind is to consider what you’ll want to carry. Naturally, heavier items will make the sleeve heavier too. That isn’t too complicated to understand, of course. However, some people need a map drawn for them with this stuff.

What are the Main Things to Consider when Buying a MacBook Pro Sleeve?

Given the variety of MacBook Pro sleeves out there right now, it’s worth understanding some important factors you need to consider when buying one. Before you buy any item, you need to think about why you need it as well as what you’ll use it for.

While we likely say this about every item we discuss at Men’s Gear, it’s quite important as some simply don’t do it.

That said, we want to give you proper protection like MacBook Pro sleeves gives these amazing laptops. That is why we wanted to go over some things you need to be considering if you’re looking for a sleeve. Let’s get started.

Size:

Perhaps the most important of these factors is the sleeve size. The sleeve should fit around your Apple laptop snugly, to protect it effectively. There are two different sizes of the MacBook Pro, so you need to ensure you pick the right sleeve for your laptop.

In our guide, we feature a selection of sleeves for both.

Of course, these sizes are dictated on the type of laptop you have. That falls under the screen size, which obviously adds to the length and even weight of the product. The 13-inch and 15-inch laptop will be what these sleeves are made for.

Make sure you look at the specs completely to get the right sleeve for your MacBook Pro.

Material:

MacBook Pro sleeves are made from a wide variety of different materials, as you’re likely all aware. For those unaware, the materials used are leather, canvas, nylon, and Neoprene. To help choose between these seemingly excellent materials, it’s best you look at your own lifestyle and usage.

You can then properly consider some of the pros and cons of each material. To further help you there, we highlighted each below with some crucial pros an cons for each version.

-Nylon:

  • Pros – Various design options, water-resistant, lightweight.
  • Cons – Not as much protection as a material like Neoprene.

-Neoprene:

  • Pros – Inexpensive, padded, durable lightweight, shock resistant, water, and weatherproof.
  • Cons – Does not offer much additional space for accessories.

-Canvas:

  • Pros – Usually have numerous straps and pockets, durable and eco-friendly.
  • Cons – Stains easily, heavier than other materials, lacks waterproofing, and if wet takes a long time to dry.

-Leather:

  • Pros – Durable, stylish, often features many pockets and compartments.
  • Cons – Expensive, heavier than other materials, requires an additional layer of padding to offer effective protection, not stretchy.
Style:

The style of MacBook Pro sleeve perfect for you will always be very subjective. If you’re a hip young trendsetter, you may prefer a more colorful and trendier looking sleeve. Whereas if you’re a business professional who works in the city and has to show you take oh-so-seriously, you’ll want a slicker and more conservative sleeve.

There is something for everyone truly. In our guide below, you’ll see options of all kinds. This will allow you to decide the version you like best, as well as even the material you’d prefer.

Features:

While many are nothing much more than sleeves, some products offer special features that you’ll want to consider. For instance, some come with handles that are perfect for providing extra protection if you intend on carrying your laptop by hand.

If you’re looking for a way to keep everything in one place, you’ll be interested in a sleeve with pockets and compartments. There’s also a variety of different closure systems, such as Velcro, zippers, buttons, and snaps. All of these features offer their own certain thing for your sleeve, even down to the buttons and snaps.

Obviously, the type you prefer will be based on your own personal preferences. Thus, if you like zippers more than Velcro or leather over Nylon, you can make that choice. Then pick the item that fits this for you the best.

4) Lacdo 360-Degrees Protective Laptop Sleeve

Looking for something with handles to keep a safer grip on your 13-inch MacBook Pro? This Lacdo 360-Degrees Protective laptop sleeve could be the ideal choice. What do we love about this sleeve? For one thing, it’s been constructed using weatherproof canvas.

This stops any vapor and water that could play havoc with your device.

It’s not a problem when you only have this to carry and get caught in a sharp rainstorm or live in an especially rainy area. The soft, 360-degrees shockproof lining protects you and the computer against static electricity as well. It also absorbs any impacts and reduces the effects of any accidental scratch and bump.

We also love the additional space this sleeve provides to keep power bank, chargers, cables, smartphone, and pens. All are kept in place with a smooth-gliding zipper. The mostly black exterior is given a splash of color in the form of the small strip of blue stitching.

Incidentally, this sort of matches the color of the interior.

5) LENTION Split Leather Sleeve Case for MacBook Pro 13-inch

The first leather MacBook Pro Sleeve suitable for 13-inch laptops is this LENTION case. Split leather, for those who don’t know, is created from the hide’s fibrous part after the top-grain rawhide has been removed. It’s often referred to as second-grain leather.

This is the type of leather used on these MacBook Pro sleeves.

Favored for its durability and appearance, everyone seems to be a fan of this model. We cannot say we blame them for this. The sleeve’s stitching is made all the more precise and perfect by the use of a process called edge painting. This ensures the sides have a slimmer profile.

With its cool flap, secured by two magnetic snaps, this is a perfectly convenient way to carry and store your MacBook Pro. Unlike the harsh and rugged leather on the exterior, the interior has a soft velvet-like lining. This provides protective bedding for your laptop from all those daily accidental bumps, knocks, and scratches that occur.

It’s more than just a cool tribute to your favorite wine. On the inside, it has a big pocket with a zipper that can hold anything from a tablet and smartphone to a power bank and even a mouse. We especially love the way the zipper only runs around one end of these MacBook Pro sleeves.

8) Targus A7 13-inch Sleeve with Ariaprene for MacBook Pro

From Targus comes the A7 13-inch sleeve made from Ariaprene and compatible with, shockingly, the MacBook Pro 13-inch laptop. Ariaprene is a high-quality synthetic material similar to rubber. It’s very flexible and when utilized in this sleeve, provides a high standard of protection for your computer.

A very plain, but classy exterior hides a complex and incredibly effective, fully copyrighted Tri-Cell Cushion System. What’s the deal with the Tri-Cell cushioning? It is a combination of mesh material that provides ventilation with foam padding.

This protects your laptop from accidental drops, which is perfect for that clumsy friend or family member. What would you expect from a company that’s been at the forefront of providing mobile-centered products since 1983?

Water resistant and durable, this is everything you’d want from a simple, but effective sleeve for your MacBook Pro. For the eco-conscious, Ariaprene is a great choice for material as it degrades over the course of time.

The 30 Best Wireless Keyboards

I

f your desk is slowly becoming a mountain of devices, screens, files, donuts, pens, and other obstacles, it may be time you got yourself a wireless keyboard. Instead of digging your way through the mess trying to find that paperclip, you could save desk space and tidy things up with a wireless keyboard. Wireless keyboards don’t just get rid of wires and trip hazards, they also consolidate devices.

A wireless keyboard can be paired with many different devices. They’re a true convenience item which will certainly make work and play seamlessly. We at Men’s Gear have been taking a good and hard look at these portable products and narrowed down our favorites to a top 30 – we actually shook our head at some, we promise!

To help you find the best wireless keyboard for your needs then check out our list below, but before we get into that, let’s give you a bit of a crash course on these products…

What Are The Main Benefits Of Wireless Keyboards?

Wireless keyboards have a lot of useful benefits to the right people. Some wireless keyboards have a multi-device capability. They can connect to more than one device at the same time, even if those devices are from different manufacturers.

This is especially true for those that connect with Bluetooth.

This makes switching between chatting on Facebook, taking a Skype call, and browsing Men’s Gear even easier. If you have your own home office and multiple screens on the go, then you’ll save a lot of desk space!

They also have the ability to transform your devices.

Instead of taking your bulky laptop with you on a business trip, just bring your tablet, smartphone, and one of these keyboards. You’ll have the same capabilities at a fraction of the cabin-bag space.

Most wireless keyboards are exceptionally portable too. They’re light, compact, and it’s not uncommon for them to fold up and fit in your pocket. One of the models we’ll show you below actually rolls up like a piece of sushi!

What Is The Average Range Of A Wireless Keyboard?

The range of a wireless keyboard can vary depending on the manufacturer. Most of the best wireless keyboards will have a range of around nine or ten meters. This is more than enough for most people’s needs. It’ll certainly let you float around the room during boardroom meetings or just let you control the TV without leaving the sofa.

One wireless keyboard below can even excel the standard ten meters by a couple more!

Overall, the range is more so measured with a clear need for a device to be present. If you take your phone with you and the keyboard can connect to it, then you’re good to go anywhere. The same for a tablet or another random mobile device.

The real issue truly is that most keyboards won’t leave the home or be separated from a device by much.

The major use for wireless keyboards tends to be Smart TVs or gaming. Considering the range won’t be too far with these needs, you should be good to go with any keyboard we list below.

What Products Are Compatible With Wireless Keyboards?

When it comes to compatibility, wireless keyboards can become a bit of a mixed bag. This tends to be where you need to do most of your research. No matter how awesome a wireless keyboard it is, if it doesn’t pair up with your devices, it’s as useful as a chocolate keyboard.

However, it’s far less tasty.

Most of these products can pair with smartphones, tablets, and laptops. However, it’s the manufacturers of these devices that will be of some concern. You need to make sure your chosen wireless keyboard will pair with the Apple Mac, the Galaxy phone, or the Windows PC you own.

You need to make sure your wireless keyboard will pair up to your device and its current software. Some keyboards will require a specific operating system, software level, or upgrade before becoming compatible.

Look for these three things in this order:

First, is the wireless keyboard compatible with *insert device type*? For example, is the wireless keyboard compatible with smartphones?

Second, is it compatible with *insert manufacturer* devices?

Finally, is the wireless keyboard compatible with *insert manufacturer* devices with *insert software*?

If these three questions match your needs then the wireless keyboard could be perfect for you. Fortunately, most manufacturers make their keyboards to cater for most people – why wouldn’t they?

We don’t feature many refurbished products on our Men’s Gear buyer guides, but this refurbished wireless keyboard is worth all the hype. The refurbishment process includes a lot of testing to make sure you’re still buying quality and it comes with a 90-day warranty.

It doesn’t pair to devices with Bluetooth like a lot of them, however.

Instead, it uses a unifying receiver. Yet, the most noteworthy thing about this wireless keyboard is that it runs on solar power. That’s right! You can help the planet and equip yourself with a cool gadget at the same time.

Top 12 Apple Watch Docks and Stands

S

martwatches like the Apple Watch have become increasingly popular, as they have become a part of people’s everyday life. Apple Watches changed how things were done. Long gone are the days where watches meant for time, weather, or temp. We recommend you keep it charged, as Apple Watch docks and even Apple Watch stands are readily available to help there.

These slick and cool wrist-based devices are amazing and can even update you on the news or reach your emails for you. Do they really need a stand though? People may think their Rolex deserves one, but an Apple Watch?

However, before you dismiss the idea completely, consider the fact that it’s incredibly easy to accidentally knock things off your bedside table. This is especially possible when it’s late at night and dark. Where are you more than likely going to keep your Apple Watch as it charges?

That’s right, likely the worst place possible that could result in it being damaged. Hence the need for an Apple Watch stand.

You may already be sold on the idea, but even if you’re not, welcome you to check out our buying guide below. In this guide, we’re going to look at the top 12 Apple Watch docks and stands around. There are some truly spectacular designs out there screaming ‘take me home’.

Before that, we need to address some of the questions commonly asked about Apple Watch stands and charging docks.

What Are The Main Things To Consider When Buying Apple Watch Docks or Stands?

This is a very sensible question. Before you buy anything, it’s always important to know exactly what you should be looking for. Especially what to consider before handing over any money. When it comes to Apple Watch docks and stands, there’s a lot to choose from.

It’s clearly a great help knowing what’s important.

The main consideration you to need to make first is whether or not a dock is compatible with your watch. You’ll find that some are not designed to cope with the weight of the heavier bands or watches with bulkier screens.

We’ve tried to include docks and stands in our guide that are more or less compatible with most Apple Watch models and bands. A further consideration worth making is the actual look and type of the dock or stand. While some are nothing more than a post, others have a more stylish look.

The material is a big consideration too as this plays a part in how durable and robust a stand will be.

You also need to give thought to how easy it is to use any of these Apple watch docks, and if it requires any assembly. Especially if it requires an extensive amount. We don’t mind getting our hands involved in a little self-assembly from time to time, but we know that’s not really everyone’s thing.

There are some great stands and docks in our guide that require little to no assembly at all.

Most Apple Watch users tend to have an iPhone or iPad as well. If you’re one of those “Apple ’til I die” types, you should consider getting a dock that accommodates your smartwatch. You also want a smartphone from Apple, of course, most of you already have this or plan to.

What are the Benefits of Apple Watch Docks or Stands?

First off, they obviously provide a place for you to charge your smartwatch. However, there’s a number of different benefits you get from using them.

For one thing, they not only provide a place to charge your smartwatch, but they also provide a safe place. As we’ve already established, humans can often be clumsy buffoons. By having an established place to keep your Apple Watch, you can ensure it’s safe from your stupidity.

Particularly if you’re prone to a few beers on a Saturday night. We’re talking to you, Carl!

Convenience is another major benefit for Apple watch docks and stands. Just because it’s charging, it doesn’t mean you don’t want to still use it. Most docks and stands make it possible to do this, so you can always keep up with what’s going on.

Sometimes it’s just great to simply display the majesty and awesomeness that is your Apple Watch. It’s true, you’ve got a great timepiece that’s more than just another timepiece. This is better than just placing it in some random area in your bedroom.

Seriously, why not find a way to incorporate it into the decor of your home?

We don’t wish to point you in any direction. However, there are at least two stands in our guide that make the lines incredibly blurry between functional charging docks and exquisite pieces of furniture. We’re just saying…

What are the Main Brands of Apple Watch Docks and Stands?

As you’d imagine, everyone wants to get a piece of the pie that is Apple Watch docks and stands. There’s an amazing array of companies. Some of them you’ve probably heard of, yet there are others you surely need to know about. Of course, then there are those you’re probably best forgetting about.

In our guide, we’ve included a mixture of both larger brands like Griffin, Belkin, Twelve South, and Elago alongside other newer and up-and-coming brands like Nomad. We believe that the items we’ve picked out all have their merits and deserve a place on our list.

The exciting thing about making this list was that we discovered so many options that we wouldn’t have known about had we not done the legwork.

You may have used Twelve South products in the past and have never used Nomad stuff before. However, you may find that once you’ve finished reading this post, you’re sold on a completely different brand.

Now we’ve cleared all that up, it’s time to take a look at our top picks.

1) Twelve South HiRise Stand for Apple Watch

The Twelve South HiRise Stand for Apple Watch is elegant and sophisticated. Twelve South has a firmly established reputation for designing and manufacturing accessories exclusively for Apple users.

The South Carolina-based company understands the needs Apple users have from their charging stations and docks. This is evident from the HiRise. It fulfills its primary function exceptionally well, but it’s more than a charging dock for Apple Watch.

They provide a robust metal and very stable base where you can charge your smartwatch and get full use out of it. The dock allows you to check the time, reply to messages, and check any alerts. The stand is angled and elevated into just the right position for you to look at and use your Apple Watch.

The underside is rubberized to ensure it doesn’t budge from its placement.

Regardless of which Apple Watch band you actually have, you’ll find that it has a safe place to rest on the HiRise. Setting it up has been made incredibly easy. Simply take the magnetic charging disc included with your smartwatch and press it into the cut-out in the HiRise lined with silicone.

It’s simple enough to press the attached cable into the grooves on the base before placing the cover over the base. Now just take the top band of your smartwatch and place it gently across the silicone pad. Then down behind the support post.

Both the buckle and band can rest tidily on a leather pad and your Apple Watch is protected perfectly.

2) elago W3 Stand for Apple Watch Series 4, 3, 2 and 1

Have you been a faithful follower of Apple and their cutting-edge products since the early days? Perhaps you just like having lots of retro items in your home. Either way, we’re sure you’ll love the elago W3 Stand for Apple Watch series 1 through to 3.

The design is based on the classic Apple Macintosh 1984 desktop computer. Simply slot your smartwatch into the silicone insert of the stand, lining the screen of the device up with the screen of the stand. You can use it as it charges and to check messages and alerts.

It also presents you with the novelty of viewing your smartwatch screen as if it was on an old computer. It comes in less than $10, incredible!

This nostalgic W3 stand is a precisely made accessory. The elago stand has used high-quality silicone, chosen for its softness and flexibility. It ensures that both the surface you place the stand on and the Apple Watch itself is protected from damage.

The W3 is compatible with the Nightstand mode available in some selected Apple Watches. Compatible with all sizes and styles of Apple Watch, it can also work with both metal and plastic chargers too.

This means that that expensive smartwatch you wouldn’t be caught dead without is always protected when charging at night and will be ready to go again in the morning. The elago stands are made by a San Diego-based company that has been operating since 2002.

The detail on these Apple watch docks pays perfect tribute to the similarly simple sophistication that Apple products have always had. Heck, even the disc drive has been recreated, including even that little hole we all used to eject floppy discs with.

3) Belkin Valet Charge Dock and Stand

Belkin is a highly reputable brand when it comes to computer and electronic gadget accessories. They’re known for designing and manufacturing some of the most intuitive and thoughtfully designed products. This Belkin Apple Watch Valet is a great example of that.

We fell in love with the design the moment we saw it. These Apple watch docks are simply drop-dead gorgeous and a great way to display and charge your watch. All while ensuring it’s safe from accidental damage.

The armrest charging dock has an attractive chrome finish that we feel elevates what would’ve been a normal stand to a higher level of cool. As your smartwatch rests on the dock, it sits at the best angle for viewing it. Belkin has ensured that it’s easy to slide it on and off the charger.

The Belkin Watch Valet was the first to ever incorporate magnetic charging hardware. That’s exactly the same as the charging cable that comes with the Apple Watch itself. This means that it’s easy to connect up and almost completely failsafe. The magnets instantly align their connectors and the inductive charging process begins.

Belkin also offers optional support for the watch band. This addition is ideal for models with link bracelet and steel mesh bands and those that are more flexible than others. There’s a subtle charm to it, only emphasized by the 4ft long USB-A cable that’s tethered and runs from under the base.

It doesn’t ruin the charging dock’s visual appeal at all. Neat, tidy, modern, and space-efficient, the Belkin Watch Valet is compatible with the Apple Watch Edition, Apple Watch Sport, and original Apple Watch.

4) Native Union Marble Weighted Charging Dock

There’s nothing that says gives something an extravagant and luxurious feel than a genuine machine-cut marble that’s been polished with expert care and attention by hand. Yes, that’s right. You did read the words ‘genuine marble’. This is an exquisite place to rest your Apple Watch.

Due to each piece of marble having unique veins and patterns, each dock is completely different.

The watch itself sits on a brushed metal arm that rotates – helping you find the best angle for viewing and using your device while it charges. These Apple Watch docks are also reversible, allowing the watch to sit at either end of the base, depending on what you prefer.

Once you’ve been bowled over by the sheer beauty of their creation, the Native Union brand gives even more reasons to justify the hefty price tag. Their marble dock has been designed to be fully compatible with not just all models of Apple’s signature smartwatch, but all strap styles and sizes too.

The dock holds your watch magnetically, so it doesn’t even matter if it’s unbuckled or not.

To allow the natural aesthetics of this accessory Native Union have engineered it so it consists of only two parts. These components click together and then you’re good to go. No fussing around with screws and other fixtures. Easily feed your Apple Watch charging wire into the stand and never have to worry about fiddling with it again.

If your watch has Nightstand mode, lay this dock on its side and your phone will switch to it. Are you searching for a safe and secure place to keep your smartwatch, given the five-star treatment it really deserves? Then the Marble Edition Dock for Apple Watch from Native Union ticks all the boxes.

5) Nomad Stand for Apple Watch

Sometimes you just want something simple with a beautiful design, and that’s where Nomad comes in. A start-up established by Brian Hahn and Noah Dentzel, they are the creative geniuses behind these marvelous Apple Watch docks. If it seems like you’re just looking at a piece of aluminum, you’re more or less right.

It’s a piece of high-quality aluminum that’s been cut with care and precision using CNC and then anodized to give it an astonishing finish. The company’s approach to the design mirrors Steve Jobs’ own minimalist design approach, making these Apple Watch docks perfect for your smartwatch.

Using it couldn’t be easier, simply connect the charging wire and then slip your watch onto the top of the stand and it’ll start charging immediately. The aircraft-grade aluminum ensures that the stand is both robust and durable. On the underside, there’s high-friction rubber to prevent it from slipping.

Nomad was not content with that being enough.

They took safety precautions to the next level by having a solid piece of copper placed between the rubber and the aluminum. More than three times heavier than aluminum, it provides ballast and you’ll find it very difficult to accidentally knock the stand over.

We don’t know how you feel, but we’re transfixed by Nomad’s creation. Some people aren’t really interested in having a hunk of aluminum just sitting on their bedside table or desk. Others simply prefer easily broken plastic charging docks.

However, these Apple Watch docks are truly too good to overlook, if you want our honest opinion.

6) Griffin WatchStand Powered Charging Station

Are you like many Apple Watch users and have an iPhone as well? Wouldn’t it be ideal to have a place where you could store and charge both your Apple Watch and iPhone at the same time? Fortunately, Griffin has come up with an elegant and functional solution with the WatchStand.

While your smartwatch takes its elevated position atop the post, your iPhone has a comfortable and safe resting place on the felt-covered platform. It may not have the hot and sexy looks of other docks and stands in this guide, but the WatchStand can’t be faulted on its ability to fulfill its purpose and efficiently get its job done.

Griffin has ensured that untidy cables are a thing of the past with its clever cable management system. Any excess cabling from these Apple Watch docks is wrapped around the inside of the post, hidden from sight, then fed through the base. If you’re a neat freak, this might be your new best friend.

Even if you’re not a neat freak, it’s hard to argue that having a billion charging cables going this way and that way isn’t frustrating. Griffin’s awesome WatchStand is an ingenious solution. The base has a rubberized footing to ensure it never accidentally falls off your desk, countertop, or bedside table.

There are many different iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Yet in its short lifetime, there’s already a wide range of Apple Watch models and sizes. It’s hard sometimes to find a charging stand or dock that is compatible with all bands. The Griffin WatchStand, therefore, stands out as being different.

It’s designed to be compatible with most models, straps, and sizes. Furthermore, if you find the Nightstand mode useful on your Apple Watch, you can still use it with the WatchStand.

7) Mercase Apple Watch Stand

The Mercase Apple Watch Stand is a 2-in-1 product. Not only does it provide you with the perfect place to display and charge your Apple Watch, but it also doubles as an ideal place to display and charge your iPhone. Offering a humble price tag, its components are made from highly durable silicone, TPU, and aluminum.

That said, those gadgets you need for everyday life will be well protected.

While the Apple Watch sits on its stand, elevated in a horizontal position, you can still use it for various things. If your Apple Watch comes with Nightstand mode, this stand will give you the best use out of that handy bedside alarm clock. The iPhone, on the other hand, has a silicone-covered stand to rest against.

You can either sit it horizontally or vertically, depending on your preference and if you’re using it while it charges.

You’ll find that the charger for your watch fits very neatly and securely into the stand. The base of the stand has the addition of rubber feet to ensure that whatever surface you place this stand on, it’ll be protected from scratching and damaging.

The rubber feet also provide anti-slip traction for the stand to ensure it doesn’t get tipped accidentally and fall onto the floor. Let’s face it, it’s happened to us all at some point. With these Apple Watch docks from Mercase, that shouldn’t ever be a problem again.

8) Spigen S330 Apple Watch Stand with Aluminum Body

The Spigen S330, like many, is a sturdy and durable stand made from aluminum. The addition of TPU over these Apple Watch docks help to protect against scratching. The company has a patent pending on this extremely convenient, yet elegant accessory.

With most on this list, the stand presents your Apple Watch at the perfect viewing angle. This allows you to enjoy making use of its features, even when it’s charging.

The dock consists of a cut-out made to fit the circular shape of the Apple Watch charger so that you rest place the watch on top and the charger slots into place beneath. This keeps the wires hidden, an important feature if you’re home and want your bedside table or desk to be neat and tidy alongside your stand.

There’s also a cut-out in the side of the stand where you can feed the charger cable through, further lending to its minimalist and slick look.

The base has been devised with the end user in mind, as it has the standard rubber feet at each corner. This prevents it from being toppled over with all your hopes and dreams along with it. Although favored for its flexibility and stability, we can’t help but fall in love with anything featuring heavy use of aluminum.

Something very manly about a hunk of metal at your bedside, don’t you think? We’re not saying women will fall in love with you, singletons, it may help you to start your day with a masculinity boost. Imagine, reaching for your watch, sliding it off that metallic stand and onto your wrist.

You’re a winner dude!

Made by the Aerb brand, these Apple Watch docks are incredibly affordable and elegant. It certainly relies on the natural beauty of bamboo wood, as you can tell. One of the first major plus points for this item is the fact it comes ready to use out of the box. There’s no assembly required at all.

10) Belkin Valet Charge Dock for Apple Watch and Phone

Belkin is at it again with these terrific Apple Watch docks. This is very similar to the aforementioned Belkin Valet dock for just the Apple Watch but differs as this has space for you to charge your phone too. Let’s face it, most the Apple faithful are Apple users ’til you die, and have both the watch and phone from the fruit-based name.

Healthy choice, men.

When they make exquisitely intuitive and beautifully simplistic-looking, yet powerful portable devices, we can’t really blame you. It makes sense to invest in a stand that does two jobs effectively. As mentioned with the other model, this was the first dock on the market to incorporate the Apple Watch magnetic charger into the design.

Your iPhone is kept horizontal while your Apple Watch is elevated above the ground. Similar to that of Simba being displayed for the whole of the Serengeti. With this design, you’re able to get full use out of your devices. As the big difference between this and the other version is the iPhone connectivity, it’s worth discussing some of the great additions.

Probably the biggest selling point, with regards to iPhone charging with this dock is the fact it features the adjustable VersaCase Lightning charge connector. This allows you to charge your phone without moving its case. At Men’s Gear, we all know how much of a pain that can be.

It looks like Belkin feels our pain, and has made a dock to help. There’s no need to worry about too many wires with this stand. Once your devices are connected up to it, they are both charged from the same AC cable.

11) Twelve South Forte Chrome and Leather Charging Stand

Returning to Twelve South, we have the Forte stand and charging dock. Twelve South were clearly inspired by the elegant simplicity of the Apple Watch when they were designing this. The base of this chrome masterpiece is square, just like the Apple Watch casing. When you slide your smartwatch into place, it’ll look like it’s floating.

The band itself is coated in high-grade leather to protect your watch’s band. This sets off nicely against the silvery shine of the chrome.

As you’d expect from Twelve South, they have ensured that the Forte will work seamlessly with the magnetic charging cable that comes with the Apple Watch. You simply need to slot the magnetic disc in the slot at the top of the Forte, then press the cable into the channel at the back. You’ll then merely place your Apple Watch on top of the disc.

There’s a polycarbonate chromed ring that keeps the charging disc in place. All the while providing a protective layer between your smartwatch and the metallic surface of the stand. With your cables hidden, your focus will always be on your awesome smartwatch.

Unlike other Apple Watch docks, Twelve South made their stand compatible with your watch in both Portrait and Nightstand mode. If you’re simply charging it while you work and need your watch to be fully functional, Forte allows you to do both.

Whereas if you’re using it as an alarm clock while it charges through the night, Forte also enables you to do this.

Finally, this chrome and leather beast is designed to be compatible with nearly every watch size and band style from Apple. That means most of the two-pieces to closed-loops will be covered.

12) Griffin WatchStand Charging Dock (Dual Stand)

We end on a high with another great product from Griffin. These are known to be deceptively clever Apple Watch docks. It doesn’t really look like much, does it? However, it displays your Apple Watch at a very easy to view angle, while charging it.

The best thing is, thanks to its ridiculously simple, but classy design, you have the perfect cable management. The bulk of your smartwatch, you can store the cable in the post. This keeps your desk, bedside table, or even kitchen countertop neat and tidy and free of unruly wires and cables.

Human beings are typically an impatient bunch, aren’t we? We want everything now and when you know you’ve got to wait until your watch charges, it can be frustrating. This is why it’s handy to have this something like one of these Apple watch docks around.

You can still use it and benefit from its many great features, despite any connection it has to your main socket. For the price and the compact design, even if it’s not the best stand in the world, we think this is worth considering.

Top 8 iPhone XS Max Screen Protectors

S

creen protectors are for dorks. Who goes to that kind of lengths to keep their phone safe. It’s just a material possession after all, who cares? We’re too obsessed with our devices when we should be living in the real world. This is the talk of a man, right up until the moment his iPhone XS Max takes flight from his hand. It then lands with a crash and a crack on the sidewalk creating a spiderweb of regret and frustration across the screen. Suddenly, he realizes. He needed to look at iPhone XS Max screen protectors before this day.

We’ve all been there at some point in our short smartphone owning lives where we thought we were too good for screen protectors. However, as we got older, as we experienced the heartache of damaging a possession that was more prized than we’d like to admit.

Since we’ve actually started paying for the damn thing, we’ve decided to be more cautious. There’s no better place to start than getting a screen protector.

Alongside phone cases and SD cards, they are the must-have accessories for anyone who owns a smartphone right now. They protect your screen from scratches, they can help reduce glare, and they absorb impact to prevent cracking. Some of them are even designed to stop people peeking at your screen!

Some phones are, of course, more expensive and treasured than others. We’re not saying we’re picking sides in the quite honestly tired and boring iPhone vs Android debate, but we know how iPhone users feel about their phones. Because of this, we have reached out a hand to help.

Then, compiled a list of ideas for a screen protector for iPhone XS Max that you might find useful.

Coming up are our choices for the top 8 iPhone XS Max screen protectors, the perfect solution to keeping your prized possession in one piece.

What to look for when buying an iPhone XS Max screen protector?

When looking for a screen protector for the iPhone XS Max, you can’t just throw any old product into your shopping cart. It might seem a simple job, but it is far, far from it and even though it will seem to many like just a piece of plastic we know what’s really up. Before deciding which screen protector to buy, you must first consider these features:

Hardness Rating:

The hardness rating, depicted by a capital H next to a number, determines how tough the screen protector is. To help you understand this scale and not get too confused (not that it isn’t obvious) the numbers range from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest.

When looking through iPhone XS Max screen protectors for purchase, you need to ensure you buy one that is at least 9H. Anything less means you are getting ripped off, and you don’t want that, especially when it comes to your phone.

Material & Design:

The type of material is a massive factor. Tempered glass is becoming insanely popular, and it makes total sense why. It has proven to be highly effective in protecting phone screens from damage. There are even more advanced versions of this tempered glass in newer products.

When it comes to the design, you will want a screen protector that offers full coverage. Otherwise, you are leaving delicate components exposed that could result in dust, dirt, sand, or water breaching the casing. This can damage the internal parts. If you want to guarantee your phone remains safe and operational, then a full-display protector is a must.

Brand:

There are several generic and bootleg brands of iPhone XS Max screen protectors (among other phones) that offer full protection. However, many are nothing more than just pieces of glorified saran wrap. When shopping around for screen protectors, it will benefit you to keep a sharp eye out for brands you recognize or brands that have been recommended.

We get that this is sometimes impossible due to the over-saturation of products. However, doing a little bit of research will help save you from suffering from a damaged screen. We say no thanks to a low-quality protector.

Price:

As with any purchase, it is important to understand what is worth your money. The difference between a $10 protector and a $20 protector is negligible. However, the $20 dollar protector will typically offer better results. It’s when you find ones for $1 that you need to start feeling concerned.

Think about what the price is offering, and if you can find something similar that you trust for a cheaper price. Then go with your instincts and save that money.

Extras:

Some screen protectors now come with cool extra features such as hydrophobic coating or privacy designs. These are made to prevent people from seeing your screen from a certain angle. These are great extras that will enhance the effectiveness of your screen protector.

It can make them much more than just something to keep it safe from scratches and knocks.

What are the main benefits of buying iPhone XS Max screen protectors?

There are many benefits that come with investing in iPhone XS Max screen protectors or any kind of smartphone, They are much more than merely keeping away scratches, although, that is certainly still high on the list. Rather, there are some key factors people need to keep in mind.

Many of them are crucial to the proper screen protector can do for you. Others, meanwhile, are simply good to consider. Those are:

Prevents Scratches:

The obvious out of the way first, right? Not every knock or scrape will scratch your phone screen, but sometimes it can take the smallest of scrapes to cause damage. All of this could have easily been avoided with a proper screen protector. Even if it is just a small scratch that no one will notice, really.

However, you’ll always see it every time you FaceTime, watch videos, scroll through your Instagram, and more. You will wish you’d just bought a screen protector when you had the chance.

Prevents Shattering:

What can a thin film of plastic do to stop your screen shattering you ask? First, it is not a film of plastic and modern screen protectors are made from actual flexible glass that is tough enough. Not just tough enough to withstand scratches, but also shattering as well.

The protector acts as an impact buffer that absorbs the shock when the phone hits the ground. This prevents the glass of the screen from shattering and keeping your phone looking brand new, aside from a few scratches around the corners.

Gives Peace Of Mind:

It’s likely that iPhone XS Max screen protectors give those iPhone users some great peace of mind. Why wouldn’t they? They work well for your phone, regardless of the type, and will be able to withstand any accidents that occur during your week. No more will you freak out as soon as it slips from your grip.

Rather, you can count on the protector to have your back most of the time. Be careful though, a screen protector doesn’t make your phone invincible, so still, exercise some caution in taking care of it.

Reduces Glare:

Don’t you just hate when you’re trying to use your phone but the light is making that near impossible? Well, the good news is that a screen protector will not just prevent scratch and shatters. Many also help you see the screen more clearly.

This is great for your eyes as you won’t spend the day squinting and will improve visibility by reducing reflections from all around you. This allows you to see things like a white screen on a sunny day. That is some tremendous help, especially for those who like to read news from their phone. You know, like all of us!

No More Fingerprints:

The fingerprint smudge isn’t too big of a deal for most of us. However, when you’re watching videos, it can ruin the experience a little bit. Many iPhone XS Max screen protectors are designed with an oleophobic coating that prevents grease sticking to the screen.

In fact, most smartphone screen protectors tend to use this design nowadays. You will have a crisp and clear screen free from fingerprints with these. That means you don’t have to keep cleaning it to make it look as good as new.

Provides Privacy:

Finally! Some iPhone XS Max screen protectors come with a design that masks the information on the screen when the phone is tilted. This is to keep it away from prying eyes. Like many, you may use your phone to look up sensitive information like bank accounts or even social media passwords.

If that is the case, then having this little bit of privacy will act as the first line of defense for you. It’ll do wonders for ensuring your data remains safe. We cannot stress enough how great this is to have around.

Top 20 iPhone XR Cases

T

he iPhone XR is one of the hottest new additions to the Apple family. This cool entry to the family first became available in October of 2018, and has been loved ever since. With a 6.1” LCD screen and glass back, you’re going to be handling this baby with kid gloves unless you’ve got a bit of protection. We don’t mean the kind you slip in your wallet. We’re talking about iPhone XR cases for that beautiful phone.

If you’re prone to fumbling with your phone, you’ll know the sinking feeling when it hits the ground. It doesn’t take much to crack that fragile surface. It leaves you staring at a shattered screen and a phone that’s battered and bruised. Ouch!

Your iPhone XR deserves more than that. It’s a high-class cell phone; one that deserves a bit of respect. This is no cheap piece of plastic, oh no! Our Apple is a sleek paragon of beauty and it’s down to you to make sure it stays that way. Never fear, it’s not as hard as it sounds.

At Men’s Gear, we’re happy to help. We’ve stepped up and reviewed the very best iPhone XR cases on the market and found 20 that’ll work well for you.

What are the main things to consider when buying an iPhone XR case?

Your iPhone XR is gorgeous, simply gorgeous. It almost seems a shame to hide it away in a case, right? However, reluctant you might be to shroud your phone in a case, it’s crazy to consider going without. Your case will offer your cell phone all the protection it needs, giving you the confidence to whip it out and use it.

Not all phone cases are the same and some offer more protection than others. While we never recommend bouncing your iPhone around in lieu of a ball, if you’re likely to be in rougher terrain it’s an idea to look for a more robust cover. Some cases are deliberately designed to absorb more of a shock and offer a greater degree of protection than a flimsier style.

While we’re speaking about style, looks matter. The appearance of your phone case should be snazzy and make you proud to pull it out. Protection may be an essential element but the aesthetics are just as important. If the case is so ugly you have to hide in a corner to take a selfie, it’s time to find a different design.

No one puts the iPhone in a corner…

The last main factor to think about is the overall shape. Perhaps you like a funky flip open case? Maybe you like the simplicity of a hard plastic shell? There’s charging to consider as well, so do you need a design that’s compatible with wireless charging?

Whatever priorities are the most important to you personally, you’ll find one of the cases below will tick all the boxes.

What materials are most iPhone XR cases made from?

You’ll find there’s a big difference in the materials each of the iPhone XR cases is made from. Again, some prioritize looking amazing while others put practicality at the top of the list.

If you want a case which is as tough as angry Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson then look for one that’s made from polycarbonate. There’s a good selection of these but they tend to be functional rather than the best looking. Tough and robust, polycarbonate does the best possible job of sheltering the more delicate parts of your phone.

Flip-style cases aren’t as strong as polycarbonate but what they lack in strength they more than makes up for in style. Typically made from leather or faux leather, these types of cases are best at guarding against accidental scratches and scrapes rather than surviving an apocalypse.

So without further ado, let’s get on with introducing the top 20 iPhone XR cases on the market today.

1) Spigen Crystal Clear

Starting off with a bang, the Spigen Crystal Clear is a great phone case if you want to keep your original look. Slimline, transparent and made from TPU, this case simply clips to the back of your iPhone with no need to remove any of the existing pieces.

3) Caseology Transparent Cover

Don’t be fooled by the innocent-looking nature of this case – it’s a serious bit of strength. Transparent to protect the natural good looks of your iPhone, this case is deceptively strong and tough. The clever guys over at Caseology have talked to their followers to find out what people want in a phone case and this design is the result.

It simply clips into position, offering protection without detracting from the Apple design. However, this is one beast of a case, having been made to military grade. The heavy-duty design means it can withstand drops from up to 16 feet, shrugging them off without a scratch.

Although, we don’t recommend you try to check this claim – just take their word for it!

Despite being surprisingly strong, these iPhone XR cases won’t add bulk to your pocket. The design is precise and fits the phone to perfection. Even including cutouts in exactly the right place and no annoying overlaps. Caseology have ensured this case is compatible with the latest wireless charging technology and also works with screen protectors too.

Easy on the bank balance, this is a high-grade case which is quite simply hard to fault.

4) ESR Twinkle Transparent Soft TPU Cover

If you want a case that’s invisible, this clever design by ESR is about as close as you’re ever going to get. Only 1mm thick, it’s transparent and almost impossible to see, instead showcasing the style of the Apple iPhone.

Your iPhone will almost be purring with pleasure as it slips into this case. It’s designed to cling from top to bottom with sharp cut-outs in all the right places. However, it manages to avoid the nasty “wet look” that some transparent cases end up with courtesy of a micro-dot pattern.

Once in place, there’s practically no extra bulk whatsoever, and the light weight of this case means you’ll barely notice it’s there.

However, if you’re wondering now whether it’s worth shelling out for such flimsy protection, think again! Although it’s admittedly very light and flexible, it also offers an excellent degree of protection. The soft TPU back is superior to harder cases.

When protecting the glass casing is has intelligent design features such as raised lips around the camera and the edge of the case. This protects the phone’s vulnerable spots from chafing and guards against wear and tear.

Another budget buy that doesn’t cost a fortune, ESR has created a phone case that will win over a lot of customers. Truly, these iPhone XR cases are spectacular for the price and for the protection they provide.

6) Spigen Ultra Hybrid 360

Give your phone the deluxe treatment with our second case from Spigen. Offering protection for both the front and back of the phone, this is the first case on our list which pays more than lip service to looking after the screen.

The trademark Air Cushion Technology® absorbs shock, protecting against damage without looking or feeling too bulky. The frame is made from TPU with the reverse manufactured from polycarbonate. Coupled with a tough tempered glass screen protector and you’ve got multi-layer protection that puts some other phone cases in the shade.

The raised bezels around the camera lens and edges make sure there’s no unintentional contact with flat surfaces to cause bumps and scrapes while the cutouts are well-positioned. The buttons are easy to find with your fingers and respond well to the close-fitting case.

A touch more expensive than others on the list so far, but factor in the extra protection for the screen and it’s a price that’s well worth the extra dollars. It’s pretty easy to prove to your friends that these iPhone XR cases are some of the best you can find.

The question is, do you believe it’s best for your phone?

7) Torras Soft Silicone Case

For a case that feels as good as it looks, check out this little beauty from Torras. Part of the Love Series collection, the liquid silicon exterior is almost impossible to stop stroking. Despite being smooth to the touch, the silicon provides an anti-slip resistance.

This means it’s less likely to slide out of your pocket compared to cases with a shinier surface.

Exceedingly simple to fit, this flexible case glides into position with microfiber grips on the interior which hold it in position. This holds the corners snugly, preventing any ugly gaping around the edges and creating a slimline silhouette.

These iPhone XR cases don’t provide as much protection as other shock-absorbing designs. That said, it’s not ideal for situations where it’s likely to sustain more knocks and falls. However, for everyday use, it’s got lots of clever touches such as the easy-clean surface and raised bezels around the edges and camera lens.

It’s slightly more expensive than other cases we’ve listed so far and it’s not easy to see what extra you’ll get. However, with a choice of colors, it’s an attractive case that works well for low impact protection.

Rugged and ready for action, this is the phone case for the man who doesn’t like to sit still.

9) Slimline PU Leather Magnetic Flip Case

Fans of the flip design will be delighted to see the first entry on our list for this style of case. Not offering the same shock-absorbing qualities as clip-on frames, flip cases are infinitely more stylish. Offered in four sophisticated colors, this flip case is simple and elegant, with a design that’s minimalist.

Stitching around the edge and a single ridged panel are all the decoration that’s needed in a case where the focus is on the phone. While these iPhone XR cases are not always the most popular option for people, they are one of the best cases you’ll find.

That is mostly due to doing what they are supposed to do, being great at protecting your iPhone.

Manufactured from transparent TPU and PU leather, this wallet style flip case has magnetic closures for extra security. Card slots on the interior and the ability to move into a kickstand position provide extra benefits for hands-free media streaming.

This is an excellent budget purchase for anyone who doesn’t require high impact protection and prefers the flip case style.

10) Tozo Ultra-Thin Hard Cover Case

It’s time to get naked! Whoa there….we mean the phone! Tozo has created what they believe is the thinnest phone cover in the world, describing it as “Thin Like Naked”. Your phone will feel bare to the world while secretly enjoying the best of protection with this iPhone XR case that’s surprisingly strong.

These certainly are strange iPhone XR cases to show off to your friends. You might have a hard job convincing them that it’s there. Once in place, it really is that hard to detect – and no, we don’t need glasses! At just 0.35mm, it’s a ridiculously thin case that has been deliberately designed to put all the focus on the phone itself.

This is rather than a plastic case. We can’t really argue with that!

A matte finish reduces smudges from fingertips and offers anti-glare protection. A raised bezel around the camera provides protection from bumps and scratches on flat surfaces. Meanwhile, the precision design offers an exact fit around the ports.

One cannot argue its protection value for its small and thin nature, plus it works incredibly well.

11) VRS Ridged Flexible Case

VRS yet again brings it with these tremendous iPhone XR cases. It might not be quite as thin as the Tozo case, but it’s not far away! Another very thin phone case, VRS have created a bendy and flexible design which is easy to slip onto the back of your phone.

Unlike other phone cases, it’s not intended to be as invisible as possible. This case features a ridged wave texture that is accented by a cool red label. The end result is subtle yet stylish, giving the best of both worlds.

The TPU construction provides excellent protection against scratches and scrapes as well as low impact bumps. It won’t protect against high impact drops, but that’s pretty standard for this type of case. The rear is resistant to all those annoying smudges and dirt from fingertips, and it’s also scratch-resistant too.

Precision engineering means the snug fit has the holes in all the right places for ports and buttons. Meaning you can use the phone just like normal. A good price for a sporty and contemporary design, this is a transparent case that we like. A lot.

Get ready to take on the world with these heavy-duty iPhone XR cases from Ringke. Seriously strong, and with a surprisingly slimline design, this is a robust phone case that won’t let you down when the going gets tough.

Available in black or purple TPU, this case is flexible and easily stretches into position, providing a snug and comfortable fit. However, don’t let the bendiness of the case fool you as its outer layer is sturdy and a real shock absorber, surpassing military standards.

This is courtesy of the specially designed Advanced Shock Absorption System that is designed to provide protection. This is particularly true of the corners and sides.

This case isn’t just about its rugged design as there’s a number of extra touches that users will appreciate. Precise cutouts mean the ports are fully accessible and buttons can be pressed easily, and without restriction. There’s also a hole for a lanyard that makes it possible to attach your phone to a wrist strap for added protection when necessary.

Tough but understated protection, this phone case is the strong and silent type. Well priced within a budget price range, it’s a top pick for anyone who wants peace of mind.

Another new name for the list, MoKo enters the ring with another transparent case that promises crystal clear vision to show off your iPhone XR. Boy, does it deliver to! These terrific iPhone XR cases are slim and lightweight but have a little extra junk in its trunk around the corners.

As promised, the crystal clear design shows off your phone to maximum effect while still providing the essential protection for the glass back. This TPU and polycarbonate case combines a rigid back with soft and flexible corner bumpers, adding protection exactly where it’s needed.

Overall, however, it’s slim and lightweight. Despite the extra coverage, you won’t feel like you’re carrying a brick in your pocket.

Sensitivity over the buttons ensures reactive controls while the cutouts for the ports are precise and on point. There’s a built-in hole for lanyard attachment, a thoughtful extra that helps to increase the protection.

A budget price completes the top-notch package that is excellent for protecting your phone against scratches and low-level knocks. There’s only limited protection for higher impact drops. However, for this style of iPhone case, that’s not a big surprise.

16) Speck Presidio Pro

If you want excellent protection but without carrying around a case that looks like it belongs in the military, the Presidio Pro from Speck is an option worth a look. On the outside, it appears like any silicone rubber case but its secret weapon is that it’s surprisingly tough and robust.

Available in a wide range of seven different colors, the soft and flexible case is easy to slip around the iPhone. The strength comes from its dual composition, an inner layer of IMPACTIUM molded with an outer shell of polycarbonate.

Fused together, these two layers combine to create a case that’s extremely strong and with the ability to absorb shocks well.

The shock absorption works due to the qualities of the IMPACTIUM interior that features ridges which compress to disperse any impact. Tested up to 10 feet, it’s high enough for most mortal men. Though we may need to consider another case for Hagrid and possibly Yao Ming, we’re not sure.

The case is also grippy so it’s not likely to slide out of your hand easily. Throw in raised bezels for superior screen protection and a scratch-resistant design and this case is a winner.

18) ESR Marble Effect Soft Phone Case

Yes, that’s right – we liked ESR so much we couldn’t decide on which one was their best case, so here’s another! This design is instantly striking with a marble effect that sets it apart from the rest of the pack.

These iPhone XR cases are a hybrid with a soft TPU frame and a tough tempered glass back, giving the best of both worlds. This mimics the iPhone’s own glass back but adds in scratch resistance and a tougher composition. This case doesn’t offer maximum impact resistance when dropped from great heights compared to certain other cases.

However, it performs pretty well for this style. It offers good shock resistance and reinforced corners that help to cushion any blow. Raised edges around the camera lens and screen mean there’s less chance of abrasions and scrapes, providing protection while on flat surfaces.

iPhone XS In 24K Yellow Gold

As if the iPhone XS isn’t expensive enough, some company goes ahead and covers it in solid gold. Luxury brand Brikk has now unveiled its latest Lux iPhone XS and XS Max collections. They call it “the most opulent collection of communication devices available.”

This shouldn’t be too surprising, though. A lot of luxury customization companies make ultra-expensive and ultra-modified versions the minute latest iPhones are announced. They deck them in diamond, gold, or other similarly premium materials. Then they slap an extravagant price on top of the phone’s retail cost. In Brikk’s case, the company is selling carbon, ceramic, and gold versions of the iPhone XS and XS Max.

The carbon features “an extremely rare form of carbon” also found on Lamborghini cars and start at a hefty $9,995. At around the same price, you can also opt for the 24k yellow gold variants, and if you want pure solid gold instead, you’ll be pleased to know that Brikk is going to release one down the line for $50,000. No biggie.

Brikk is also offering the so-called “Ingot Collection,” with the iPhone XS coated in 250 grams of 22K gold and the XS Max in 313 grams. Both come with a mirror polished back surface, but if that’s not luxurious enough for you, you can go overboard with a bunch of different customizations if need be. Pricing of the Lux iPhone XS and XS Max collectionss starts at a whopping $75,000.

All the iPhones included in Brikk’s customizations collection are sporting 512 GB of storage and are globally unlocked models, so they can technically work anywhere. They also come with a year’s worth of global warranty.

iPhone XS Review: Should You Upgrade to Apple’s Best-Ever iPhone?

Apple took the look and feel of last year’s iPhone X, updated it in a number of key ways, and produced two next-gen smartphones: the iPhone XS ($999+) and iPhone XS Max ($1,099+). The iPhone XS is essentially the same size as year’s iPhone X – both have a 5-inch screen – while the iPhone XS Max has a “Plus-sized” 6.5-inch screen. Besides size, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are virtually identical in terms of specs. And compared to last year’s iPhone X, the iPhone XS and XS Max feature a lot of the expected: a faster processor, a better camera system or a longer-lasting battery. The new models are definitely the best and most advanced iPhones that Apple has created, however, the question is – is that enough for you to upgrade?

Editor’s Note:We had both the iPhone XS and XS Max in the office, however, since they are virtually the same exact iPhones, save for their size, we primarily used the smaller iPhone XS for the purpose of review.

|

The Good: The biggest difference from the iPhone X to the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS is with the cameras. The cameras’ specs might not have changed – you still get 12-megapixel standard lens (f/1.8) and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens (f/2.4 aperture), both with optical image stabilizers and the collective ability to shoot 4K video up to 60 frames per second – but the wide-angle sensor on the iPhone XS and XS Max is actually 32 percent larger and they have an all-around better image processing system, called Smart HDR, which enables the camera to capture a number of photos simultaneously, at different exposures, and then combine them into one high-quality image. Essentially, the iPhone XS and XS Max are able to capture more detailed photos with more contrast.

The iPhone XS and XS Max are decked out with the new A12 Bionic processor which makes them noticeably faster than the iPhone X. They are more energy efficient and thus have a better battery life, too; compared to the iPhone X, the iPhone XS has a battery that lasts roughly 30 minutes longer, while the XS Max lasts a more substantial 90 minutes longer. There are other improvements, which are subtle, such as a stronger and more water-resistant body; dual-SIM support for world travelers or other people who need a secondary phone line; and they have better speakers. Oh yea, and the iPhone XS and XS Max come in gold, which is a first.

Who They’re For: The iPhone XS and XS Max are for anybody who needs the latest and greatest iPhone right when it comes out. Also, if you have an older iPhone 7 Plus or before, you’ll really notice the difference in speed, display and the camera quality of these new iPhones.

Watch Out For: There’s not a lot to “watch out” for, but it’s worth reiterating that the new iPhone XS and XS Max have some striking similarities to the iPhone X. They essentially have the same exact screens. They have the same hand-feel, too, other than the fact that the iPhone Xs Max is obviously larger. The notch is still there and, therefore, the top of the screen can at times feel underutilized. There’s no 3.5mm adapter included in the box this time around, meaning Apple is twisting the knife even further into those who love their analog headphones. And they are, again, very expensive smartphones.

Alternatives: One of the things that went under the radar with the iPhone XS and XS Max, is that Apple also discontinued last year’s iPhone X – you can’t buy new ones (at least from Apple anyway). The iPhone XR is several hundred dollars less expensive and has most of the same features, except for the nicer OLED display and telephoto lens.

Review: It might seem like a little thing, given that Apple’s latest iPhones are so similar to the iPhone X, but the new models offer up a real difference: choice. For the first time in nearly two years (since the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus) you can buy Apple’s flagship iPhone in one of two sizes. This is great for those with small and big hands, or simply those who want to watch Netflix or Hulu on the biggest iPhone screen possible.

As somebody with small hands and who frequently wears slim-fitting jeans, I primarily used the iPhone XS, although I also played around with the iPhone XS Max. The important thing to remind yourself is that they are essentially the same iPhone. True, but iPhone XS Max has a bigger and longer-lasting battery, but the iPhone XS’s battery is no slouch either, and I’m not sure that’ll tip the scales for too many people. It really comes down to whether you want a smaller or bigger iPhone, and if you’re willing to pay extra for the big one.

As mentioned above, the iPhone XS and XS Max are both marked improvements over the iPhone X when it comes to capturing photos and shooting video. Thanks to the upgraded camera sensor and better image processing system, photos look crispier, more colorful and have so much more detail. I was able to take photos of buildings and my friends, facing the sun, and the photos didn’t get blown out. The bright background didn’t bleed into my subject like it did with my iPhone X. And low-light photos were way more usable, more colorful and more detailed. Videos look better in much the same way.

Portrait mode is also improved on the iPhone XS and XS Max. One of the standout differences is that the A12 processor allows these new iPhones to adjust background blur or bokeh afterward, which Samsung’s Galaxy S9/S9+ and Note 9 also are able to do, although working it is easier on the new iPhones.

It’s important to note that the iPhone XS and XS Max definitely have the best cameras that have ever been featured in an iPhone, but that doesn’t mean they feature the best smartphone cameras. The Pixel 2 and 2 XL are still the kings of the smartphone camera world, taking the most accurate, true-to-life photos (and that’s probably only going to get better with the impending launch of the Pixel 3 in early-ish October). I, myself, had been using the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and, when comparing the two, tended to prefer its photos over the iPhone XS. A key point of difference, however, is that Samsung’s smartphones tend to take more saturated photos, which are pretty but not as accurate as Google’s or Apple ‘s smartphone cameras – which looks best is essentially a matter of preference.

(We’ll have a smartphone camera review in the near future that breaks down the iPhone XS’s and XS Max’s skills compared to their competition. I’ll link to that review when it goes live – here.)

The iPhone XS and XS Max have been upgraded in several other ways, but those improvements probably won’t drastically change how you use the smartphone. The processor is really fast and impressive, and it also will probably allow the iPhone XS and XS to be much better at running advanced apps, such as ones that dabble in AR and VR, but your everyday use – checking email, scrolling through Twitter or Instagram, and sending messages – that’ll be largely unchanged. A colleague and I have actually been using the new iPhones for over a week, me the iPhone XS and him the iPhone XS Max, and we both kind of agreed: they feel pretty darn similar to an iPhone X.

Part of the reason why the two new iPhones feel so similar is that Apple just rolled out iOS 12, which is available on both devices, and so it doesn’t really matter as much if you’re using the iPhone X, XS or XS Max – all going to have the new features, like Screen Time and Group Notifications, and also feel snappier than before.

Verdict: The iPhone XS and XS Max are the most powerful iPhones ever and they’re also the iPhones with by far the best cameras. However, don’t expect it to feel drastically different than an iPhone X. If you have an iPhone X, there are really two reasons why you’d upgrade to these new models. One, if you want a bigger smartphone and thus you’d go for the iPhone XS Max. Or two, you take a ton photos and videos and want the iPhone with the best camera. If you haven’t upgraded from an iPhone 8/8 Plus or before, on the other hand, these new iPhones are an expensive-yet-worthwhile upgrade.

What Others Are Saying:

• “Given the lack of radical design changes, Apple wants you to focus on the camera, and just how good it is. And, well, it is pretty good. All the improvements made to the iPhone’s new processor let you snap HDR — high dynamic range — photos without worrying about shutter lag. It also means your photos will look a lot better in environments adverse to photography. Bright blue skies won’t look washed out, and low-light images will feel more alive and saturated thanks to the camera combining multiple exposures into a single photograph.” — Patrick Lucas Austin, TIME

• “What I find most interesting is that the two things responsible for that step forward — the A12 system (including the same Apple Neural Engine) and the much larger new wide-angle camera sensor — are included in the upcoming iPhone XR, which, for the same amount of storage, costs $250 less than than the XS and $350 less than the XS Max. I suspect there are a lot of people out there who don’t care about the telephoto lens on the XS and who don’t see much if any difference between the XR’s LCD display and the XS’s OLED one who are looking at these prices thinking they must be missing something. They’re not.” — John Gruber, Daring Fireball

• “I would not rush out to spend another $999 on the XS if you have a X, but if you’re already deep into a preorder, don’t worry: you will love the iPhone XS. It is, indeed, more iPhone, and it will probably hold up for years to come. I definitely prefer the Pixel 2’s camera, but the iPhone XS isn’t that far behind, and it’s still a significant improvement over previous iPhones.” — Nilay Patel, The Verge

Can Knockoff AirPods Challenge the Real Deal? We Had to Know

W

e can go on and on about how great Apple AirPods ($159) are and how they’re arguably Apple’s best first-generation product ever. (Better than the first iPod or the first iPhone? Possibly.) The fact that they were released in 2016 and, without being updated or replaced by a second-generation product, are still the most popular true wireless earbuds out there speaks volumes.

Of course, in the roughly two years since Apple released its AirPods, there have been quite a few other true wireless earbuds that have been also hit the market. Many are good, with different features, styles, fits and sound signatures that some people will definitely prefer over Apple’s AirPods. It’s well documented that AirPods don’t fit in everybody’s ears, for example, and I still wouldn’t work out with my AirPods; they’re not sweat-resistant.

Most of the best true wireless earbuds are in the $150 to $200 price range, so at $159, Apple’s AirPods are right in the middle of the pack. Still, they aren’t cheap. And if you lose or break one, that’s gonna run you another $69. If you really want AirPods, but don’t want to pay that much, there are other options out there. You’ve probably seen them while scrolling through the product purgatory that can be Amazon.com: AirPods selling for a fraction of their normal price. Only they’re not AirPods at all. They’re knockoffs. Fake AirPods.

You won’t see many knockoffs that look like Bose’s, B&O’s or even Jabra’s true wireless earbuds. You will see a lot of AirPod lookalikes, however; imitation is the highest form of flattery. These knockoffs are made by companies that you’ve likely never heard of — I hadn’t — but because they’re super cheap, some starting at just over $10, you might be tempted to pull the trigger and click “Add to Cart.” So should you? What’s the catch?

The thing with these AirPod knockoffs, or so I realized after researching them, is that they disappear. Vanish. You can save a product page and then come back to it a day later, sometimes even less, and there’s a “404 error” page and you’re meeting one of Amazon’s many beautiful dogs. Is it sketchy? Absolutely.

Still, I was intrigued enough to pull the trigger and purchase three sets of knockoff AirPods. All were priced between $20 and $30 and made by companies, likely fake, that I had never heard of: “Gianny,” “To Toplay” and “Chyu.” When they arrived and I started to play around with them, it became apparent that despite looking different and coming in different packaging, all three knockoffs were made by the same company.

When pairing, they all were named either “TWS-i7” or “tws-i7.” They were all much bigger than AirPods — probably double the size — and had one “multifunction” button on the side of each earbud. These buttons were used to pair the earbuds, as well as to play/pause and skip tracks. The instruction manuals that came with each knockoff pair were all a bit different, with amusing grammatical mistakes. “Dust-proof mesh” was advertised as a key feature in all of them, which was hilarious.

AirPods Vs Knockoff AirPods: The Big Differences

Not small. Each knockoff AirPod was roughly twice the size of an AirPod. Basically, unless you’ve never seen an AirPod before, nobody is going mistake these knockoffs for real AirPods. In fact, you might even get some more awkward gazes; people looking at you and thinking, “that doesn’t look right.”

Lights? Different from Apple AirPods, all three knockoff pairs had lights built into each individual earbud. These lights flickered blue and red every few seconds. It wasn’t super noticeable in the daylight, but it was a different story when the lights went out.

No quick pairing. None of the knockoff AirPods had Apple’s W1 chip to help instantly pair with my iPhone. To pair, I had to go the old school route through Bluetooth Settings.

Physical buttons. None of the knockoff AirPods had optical sensors, so they wouldn’t automatically turn on and off when I put them in or took them out of my ears. To turn each earbud on or off, I had to manually press and hold the “multifunction” button.

Less charge. The battery life of each earbud was not extraordinary, lastly around 1.5 hours, which is half as good as what you’d get with Apple’s AirPods.

Zero bass. As for as sound quality, none sounded quite as good as Apple’s AirPods. Sound quality was passable, but there was a notable lack of any kind of bass.

No Lightning port. The AirPod knockoffs that come with a charging case require a micro-USB connection, so you won’t be able to use your Lightning cable. These are definitely not “MFi-certified” by Apple.

Editor’s Note: As stated before, none of the Amazon links to the below knockoff AirPods are still live — they all direct to “404 error” pages. This underlines the sketchy nature of even shopping for fake AirPods. All the below links point to an Amazon search page. The below prices reflect what I paid for each knockoff AirPods.

AirPod Knockoffs #1: To Toplay Wireless Earbuds

Thoughts: Of the three knockoffs, these were probably the most AirPod-like, as they came with a charging case and were white. Pairing was seamless and straightforward. The multifunction button worked well; a tap on either earbud played/paused the music, while a longer press would skip tracks.

Should You Buy? No. These earbuds are still huge. Plus they light up blue and red, so very few people are going to mistake these for AirPods.

AirPod Knockoffs #2: Chya Earbuds Mini Twins

Thoughts: I had the most trouble with these knockoffs. Pairing them to my iPhone was a nightmare. Despite it being the same pairing process as the other knockoffs, these individual earbuds didn’t want to play together, and it took me numerous attempts to get the audio playing out of both earbuds. The multi-function button on either earbud was erratic; most times a short press would skip tracks instead of play/pause. Also, these knockoffs didn’t come with a charging case. Instead, the earbuds were loose in the box and required a pin-like dongle, which I needed to stick into the bottom of each earbud to charge. It was bizarre.

Should You Buy? Please no. Hard pass.

AirPod Knockoffs #3: Gianny Bluetooth Earbuds

Thoughts: There’s a niche market for black AirPods and, if you’re willing pay extra, companies like ColorWare will professionally paint them for you. So, in that sense, these knockoffs are decently neat, but they’re essentailly just black versions of the To Toplay earbuds (knockoffs #1). They’re large and come with a bulky charging case. The biggest difference, however, is that these knockoffs came with a set of silicone wingtips, so I could make each earbud fit more securely; it’s a nice a little add-on if you’re going to exercise with these knockoffs.

Should You Buy? Not unless you are desperate. Although these were probably the pick of the bunch (the extra silicone tips push the scale in their favor), the black colorway doesn’t make them look any cooler in your ear — in fact, they stand out even more.

2018 MacBook Pro

Although its exterior looks remain the same as ever, the newly released 2018 MacBook Pro gets some much-needed performance upgrades under the hood which are sure to please power apple users–at least for a while.

Available in 13 and 15-inch models, the new machine uses what they call True-Tone technology (already found in the iPad Pro), meaning there’s an ambient light sensor inside that adjusts the screen’s color temperature for optimal viewing, depending on where you’re sitting. The keyboard has also been slightly improved–it’s now quieter.

The 15-inch model now boasts 6 cores with Intel Core i7 or i9 options, up to 4TB of storage, and up to 32GB of RAM. The 13-inch version gives you a choice between Core i5 or i7 chips, and up to 2TB SSD. Both machines pack larger batteries, but life-per-charge is unrevealed at the moment. They also come fitted with a T2 chip that enhances security and enables the hands-free “Hey Siri” command for the first time on a MacBook.

Sonos Beam Review: The Perfect Entry-Level Soundbar, for Most People

The Sonos Beam ($399) is the company’s newest soundbar that, similar to the Playbase ($699) and the Playbar ($699) that came before it, integrates your TV with your existing Sonos speakers. If you have a multi-room setup you can play the TV’s audio throughout your whole house, or you can configure your other Sonos speakers as satellites and/or rear channels and thus have a complete Sonos surround sound system.

That said, the Sonos Beam is much more than a smaller, more affordable version of those other soundbars. It’s a smart speaker with Alexa built-in, like the Sonos One, so you can ask Alexa to play music or control your smart home devices. And since it’s connected to your TV, you can use your voice to control your TV, too, which is a first for Sonos. For TV control, the Sonos Beam will work best for those with an Amazon Fire TV (or a TV with an Amazon Fire TV dongle), allowing you to ask Alexa to turn on the TV and even go to specific shows or channels. Also, unlike Sonos’s larger soundbars, the Sonos Beam can be either wall mounted or left to rest on your media console. (The Playbase needs to rest under your TV while the Playbar is designed to be wall mounted.)

|

The Good: The great thing about any Sonos speaker, other than its sound quality, is that it comes with great software and an intuitive companion app — and the Sonos Beam is no different. You just plug the soundbar in, and then the app walks you through how to correctly connect it to your TV. The app also tunes the soundbar so that it’s optimized for your room, using its Trueplay tuning software, same as other Sonos speakers. If you own an Amazon Fire TV (or dongle), the Sonos Beam will be able to control your television almost completely. It plugs into to your TV through HDMI ARC port and it supports CEC, so you can use your TV’s remote to adjust the volume if you don’t feel like asking Alexa.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Sonos Beam is that Sonos promises that it will eventually support all major virtual assistants, including Alexa (built-in), Siri (mid-July) and Google Assistant (by end of 2018). Not only that, but the Sonos Beam promises “cross-platform voice control,” meaning, as it pertains to music streaming, you’ll be able to ask Siri to play a song, then ask Alexa what song was playing. (This is an example that Antoine Leblond, Sonos’s VP of software, showed off at the Sonos Beam’s launch event in early June). You’ll be able to do other things like this eventually, but the conditions need to be perfect for it to work — certain virtual assistants won’t work with certain streaming services, for example. These cross-platform voice controls aren’t available at launch, so I wasn’t able to test them, but knowing they’re coming is a good thing. (It makes the product “future proof.”)

Who They’re For: At launch, there are two ways of looking at the Sonos Beam. Either 1. you’re buying it because you have other Sonos speakers and you want to integrate your TV into the mix, or 2. you want one smart speaker to rule your home — it can greatly improve the sound of your TV while also being a darn good speaker for streaming music. In the latter instance, the Sonos Beam is effectively taking the place of any quality sounding smart speaker, like the Google Home Max or Apple’s HomePod.

Watch Out For: The Sonos Beam is a plug-and-play, entry-level speaker that’s designed to work well with other Sonos speakers, but if you have a home entertainment system that includes an A/V receiver and non-Sonos satellite speakers, this is probably not the soundbar for you. (You could integrate them all with a Sonos Connect:AMP, but that gets messy and expensive.) If you don’t have an Amazon Fire TV, you won’t be able to control your TV with Alexa as completely as you might expect. And if you use your TV’s optical port instead its HDMI-ARC port, you won’t be able to turn the TV completely on/off with Alexa. Even though the Sonos Beam sounds very good with its wide stereo separation, it won’t sound as immersive as other soundbars with Dolby Atmos or DTS Virtual:X that creates three-dimensional sound using virtual height channels.

Alternatives: The Playbar ($699) and Playbase ($699) are the two other soundbars that Sonos makes. Both are louder than Sound Beam and probably better options for larger rooms. The main difference, other than size and cost, is that neither of those soundbars is a smart speaker that’s integrated with a virtual assistant: you can’t summon music or you control your TV (in any capacity) with your voice.

If you’re just looking for a soundbar that doesn’t need to sync with other Sonos speakers around the house, there are a number of great-sounding and more affordable options to choose from; the Yamaha YAS-207 ($300), for example, is affordable and supports the latest surround sound technologies by DTS and Dolby Audio.

Review: For the last week I’ve had the Sonos Beam hooked up to my Vizio M-Series (2017 model) and I can tell you, right off the bat, that the Sonos Beam won’t be for everybody. If you have an A/V receiver and two satellite speakers that are normally connected to your television, like me, you’re not going to be able to easily integrate the Sonos Beam into your home theater without a Connect:AMP, which is expensive. I didn’t have one, so I reviewed the Sonos Beam as a standalone soundbar. That said, you’re not going to buy the Sonos Beam to integrate it into your non-Sonos home theater system. It’s a soundbar that’s meant to work by itself or with other Sonos speakers. And that’s what it’s great at.

The Sonos Beam is a 3.0-channel soundbar that can be integrated into 5.1 surround sound system if you add two Sonos One (or two Play:1) speakers and a Sonos Sub. However, I’m guessing that most people looking at the Sonos Beam aren’t going to have those other Sonos speakers — yet — and are instead just looking at it as a great-sounding, versatile and entry-level soundbar. It sounds very good, with a wide stereo separation that isn’t as immersive as other immersive technologies (like Dolby Atmos or DTS Virtual:X), but still makes you feel like in the movie or show (especially if you’re watching in a small-to-medium-sized room). Using the soundbar is exactly like talking to an Amazon Echo or a Sonos One speaker. You can select from the same default music streaming services (Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora), but the Sonos Beam just sounds bigger and better than those other smart speakers.

The other difference is that the Sonos Beam is obviously a big upgrade over your television’s speakers. When you turn on the television, the sound comes out of the soundbar and movie nights or just watching ESPN become instantly better. Worried about a tedious setup process? Don’t be. The Sonos app walks you through the whole thing, from using an optical dongle if your older TV doesn’t have an HDMI output for audio, to turn off your TV’s default speakers — it’s all really easy.

Again, the Sonos Beam excels as a soundbar and as a smart speaker. The last thing that Sonos Beam can do is control your television, and this is where it gets a little iffy. If you have an Amazon Fire TV (or dongle), it works wonderfully. In a private demo, I witnessed the Sonos Beam turn the television on and off, open up to specific shows, and pause and rewind those shows. Boom. Amazing.

I don’t have an Amazon Fire TV, though. I have an Apple TV 4K and an Xbox One, both of which are connected to the TV in my room, and I wasn’t able to utilize many Alexa commands. I was able to adjust its volume and I was also able to switch to specific channels and programs (like ESPN’s “Get Up” show in the morning) on the TV that’s in our living room, which is where our Verizon Fios cable box is connected. So if you don’t have an Amazon Fire TV, but your Sonos Beam is connected to a TV with a cable box (Sonos supports all the major providers), you’ll be able to ask Alexa to go to specific channels. But you still won’t be able to open apps on the Apple TV, like HBO Now or Netflix, until support for Airplay 2 launches in the coming weeks.

(Note: When support for Airplay 2 launches this July, anybody with an Apple TV will be able to ask Siri to play specific apps and shows. You’ll have to speak to Siri directly through your iOS device or Apple TV remote, however, and not directly through Sonos Beam like you can now with Alexa.)

Verdict: The Sonos Beam promises a lot, especially when it comes to cross-compatibility. If it’s actually able to understand and work with Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, all at the same time, then that’s great. Better than great, actually. But I wasn’t able to test that and in my experience, when virtual assistants from one company start controlling devices from a different company, things get complicated and they never work as well as you think they should. (Siri still won’t be able to identify a song playing on Spotify, for example.)

Sonos is known for not being complicated, however. You just plug in its speakers, follow the in-app instructions and they just work. So instead of looking the Sonos Beam as this ambitious speaker for the home, even though it could turn out to be just that, I think it’s better to look at what you’re guaranteed to get out of it. And that’s an audiophile-grade smart speaker, rivaling the Google Home Max or an Apple HomePod, and that’s a terrific entry-level soundbar. Throw in the fact that it’s going to be able to work with most future smart devices, and $399 is a pretty good deal. If you have an Amazon Fire TV, it’s a steal.

What Others Are Saying:

• “At a high level, all of this means that the Sonos Beam will offer an exchange between competing voice assistants in a way that no other smart speaker on the market does. But to Jones’ point, there are still limitations around how all of that will work, due to the way the individual cloud services work. While I was at the company’s offices, Sonos more than once used an example where you’re using Siri to initiate a song and then asking Alexa to identify which song it is. In reality, that will work only if you’re playing Apple Music. Switch to Spotify and Siri can’t be used for song search or initiation, only playback and volume controls.” — Lauren Goode, Wired

• “At $399, the Beam isn’t cheap, but it’s markedly less expensive than Sonos’ other TV speakers. It’s the same price as the Google Home Max and only $50 more than Apple’s HomePod. But because it also works as a soundbar, it offers more utility than either of them. And because Sonos is trying to mediate between all these different ecosystems, it works (often better) with more services than either of them.” — Dieter Bohn, The Verge

This Travel Adapter Changed the Way I Use AirPods

When Twelve South announced its nifty little travel accessory, the AirFly ($40), last month, I honestly couldn’t wait to get my hands on one. Its promise was big. It allowed anybody to listen to in-flight movies with AirPods. Previously, you’d have to use a wired headphone — most likely the cheap ones that Delta provides — and plug it into the 3.5mm jack in the armrest or next to the monitor to hear those movies. Not with the AirFly. After an initial pairing process that takes less than 20 seconds, you can plug the AirFly into that said headphone jack and listen to those yet-to-be-released airplane flicks with your AirPods. Beautiful.

As somebody who loves their AirPods — I’m on my second pair after leaving my first set in a California hotel room, but I digress — the AirFly excited me, though not for the reasons you might think. I don’t fly often, so the prospect of using AirFly and my AirPods on an airplane didn’t totally do it for me. Instead, I wanted to see how AirFly changed the way I play video games.

You won’t catch me in big eSports tournaments or anything like that, but I do dabble in the dark arts of a Nintendo Switch and an Xbox One. For the past few weeks, I’ve been using the AirPlay and my AirPods to play both games — and there are pros and cons to both. The Nintendo Switch really lends itself to the AirPlay. The handheld console doesn’t have Bluetooth built-in — a surprising omission, actually — so you need wired headphones if you don’t want everyone around you to hear everything. And the AirFly works seamlessly with the Switch; after pairing with the AirPods, I just plugged the AirFly into the Switch’s headphone jack and was good to go. Boom.

But I expected the AirFly to work well with the Switch. Going into my testing I really wanted to know was whether the AirFly would work with Xbox One — if I plugged it into a controller, would I be able to use my AirPods while playing Xbox Live with friends? The answer is “yes,” but mostly “no.”

I tried the AirFly with two different Xbox One controllers — a new controller with a 3.5mm jack and an older one that required a headset adapter ($25). Both worked pretty much the same: the AirPods could play the game’s auto and I could hear my friends, but the built-in microphone didn’t work, so my friends couldn’t hear me. This wasn’t entirely unexpected, as AirPods have been known to have some issues when paired with some non-iPhone smartphones — but still, this was a bit of a bummer.

At the time of testing, I was also playing around with the Oculus Go, the company’s new portable VR headset. It has a 3.5mm jack for audio, so I was able to use the AirFly (and my AirPods) while watching the World Cup and playing ‘Settlers of Catan’ in virtual reality. I know that the AirFly was designed specifically to allow people to listen to their AirPods on flights, but I found some other uses. True, I wasn’t able to replace my current gaming headset with your AirPods — most serious gamers wouldn’t dream of doing this anyway — but you can’t blame me for trying. I just like AirPods too damn much.

Editor’s Note: It’s worth noting that the AirPlay isn’t a revolutionary product. There are other Bluetooth receivers on the market that can essentially do the same job. However, the AirFly is specifically marketed for AirPods and has an instruction guide that’s specifically geared to help AirPod owners pair their AirPods — what to press, and for how long, etc. It’s just easier, and I appreciate that.
