McIntosh is known for making majestic pieces of machinery, and the new MT2 Precision Turntable certainly follows that trend. It’s the company’s third-ever turntable, and at $4,000, it’s also its most entry-level model. The belt-driven turntable is capable of playing both 33.3 and 45 rpm records and, according to the company, its moving coil cartridge “has a high enough output to make it compatible with not only moving coil phono inputs but also moving magnet inputs.” The tracking force, anti-skate force, cartridge overhang and arm height are all preinstalled on the turntable, too, meaning it doesn’t require any kind of set up — just pull it out of the box and it’s ready to rock.
The M2 has a one-inch-thick black platter that’s heavy enough to offer steady playback and designed absorb miscellaneous vibrations. As for the design, you won’t find McIntosh’s signature blue-glowing power meter, but everything else — green glow, tactile knob and intimating black lacquer finish — fits the bill. The M2 can also easily integrate into a home system with McIntosh’s phono and stereo preamplifiers, as well as integrated amplifiers.
