Apple’s 10 Most Important Announcements from WWDC 2018

At Apple’s annual developer’s conference (WWDC) this afternoon, the company revealed a string of significant updates to iOS, macOS (named Mojave), watchOS and tvOS. All these updates will kick into effect this fall for the public, while beta programs will roll out today or later this month (depending on the software). No new hardware was announced, unfortunately, and the HomePod wasn’t even mentioned; although AirPlay 2 was released last week and enabled all HomePods to produce multiroom and stereo sound (learn more, here). Still, for anybody who uses an iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple TV — or all of above — there were a bunch of cool features announced.

The Measure App

Apple introduced ARKit 2 early on in today’s presentation and with it, a really cool app that I think everybody — not just those proficient in AR — will use. It’s called ‘Measure’ and it’s able to quickly and accurately measure the size of real-world objects. It’s like a virtual tape measurer. Want to know the size of the table? chair? or TV? Just open the app, hold your iPhone or iPhone up to the object, tap the screen in a few key places to get digital measure points, and the app will tell the object’s measurements. Instant and simple.

Siri, Siri Everywhere

One of the many features coming with iOS 12 is Siri Shortcuts. Effectively, it allows any iOS app to work with Siri. iPhone and iPad users will be able to create simple-yet-specific voice commands to kick off an action. There will be a new Shortcuts app, too, that according to the press release will allow users “to create a series of actions from different apps that can be carried out with a simple tap or customized voice command.”

A Better ‘Do Not Disturb.’ Also, Notification Management

iOS 12 will bring about more customization options for Do Not Disturb mode. Instead of just being able to turn it on and off, you’ll be able to set automatically set end times for Do Not Disturb. This could be really useful when out on a dinner date or at the movies. Also, iOS 12 will allow users to more quickly manage their notifications. You’ll be able t group all notifications from a single app together, such as Twitter or Slack, and allow you close them in one fell swoop. No longer will you have to individually exit out of Twitter notification when somebody mentions you in a tweet, for example.

Create Animojis That Look Like You. Also, Tongues.

There will a couple of new Animoji avatars that iPhone X users will be able to choose from (including a ghost, koala, tiger and Tyrannosaurus) with iOS 12; more importantly, Apple announced Memojis, which are customizable Animojis that you can make actually look like yourself. Also, all Memojis and Animojis will be able to detect and capture winks and tongue movements, which they weren’t able to do before.

Group FaceTime

You’ll be able to FaceTime with up to 32 people in the same group at the same time, which is probably way more that you’ll ever need. But still cool. The feature is neat because whoever is talking in the Group FaceTime will appear larger on your screen, then when some else begins talking they’ll come to the forefront. From the demo they did on screen, the feature is simple and intuitive to work. It’ll be integrated directed into the Messages app, so group conversations can be continued even after the FaceTime ends. Also, anybody in the Group FaceTime will be able to customize how they appear, with different filters, Animoji or Memojis.

Apple TV 4K Welcomes Dolby Atmos, Zero Sign-On

When tvOS 12 rolls out this fall, Apple TV 4K will gain support Dolby Atmos audio, making it the only streaming player to be Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision certified, which is a huge coup for Apple and home theater enthusiasts alike. Also, with its new “Zero sign-on,” your Apple TV will be able to detect the broadband network you’re on and automatically signs you into all the apps that are supported by that subscription. No more having to type in your password. The zero sign-on feature will work with Charter Spectrum (and its 50 million subscribers) later this year, but Apple says it’s working to expand this feature to work with other TV providers in the future.

Aerials Shots from Space

You know those beautiful aerial screensavers that come on every time your Apple TV goes idle? Apple is adding two neat features to that. First, you can simply tap your Apple TVs remote and it’ll tell you the location of where the photograph was taken. And two, it’s adding aerial space screensavers that were taken from NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Very cool.

Safari Makes Privacy a Priority

Safari will put a much stronger emphasis on privacy and security when macOS Mojave rolls out. Apple’s internet browser will effectively block “Like” or “Share” buttons and comment widgets from tracking cookies (and therefore your browsing movements) without your permission. It’s a big step and significant stiff arm to companies like Facebook and Google who have used these tools to collect data about its users for years. There are a number of other preventative features designed to protect you from the big bad internet, which you can read about by clicking the link below.

The Apple Watch Does Yoga, Podcasts and ‘Walkie-Talkie’

With watchOS 5, your Apple Watch will be able to recognize yoga and hiking as dedicated workouts. Apple Podcasts will have its own dedicated watchOS app, too, so you can download or stream your favorite podcasts and listen to them anywhere. And finally, watchOS 5 will introduce a new Walkie-Talkie feature, which the company called “an entirely new way to communicate with voice and just a tap of the wrist.”

Stacks and Dark Mode Headline the Features Coming to Mac

There are a number of new features coming to Mac with macOS Mojave, but two really stood out for me. First, there’s Dark Mode. You can probably guess but the feature darkens the color scheme of your Mac, making the content that you’re actually working on stand out and everything else fade into the back. While on stage at this year’s WWDC, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said it’s a great feature for developers working with code, or really anybody working at night. The other feature is Stacks, which is a cool new organizational tool for Mac. The tool automatically organizes files on your desktop into groups based on their file type (such as images, PDFs, movies and spreadsheets). Also, for the first time the Home app is coming to Mac, allowing anybody with HomeKit-enabled devices to control them straight from their desktop or laptop.

Great News: Alfa Romeo is Gaining Traction, FCA Debt-Free?

Alfa Romeo, the petrolhead’s favorite marque,  is now back as the lovable Italian uncle of the American car family. From 66,000 vehicles in 2014 to 170,000 forecasted by end of 2018, the brand can really do no harm with their heavy-hitting lineup.

National Post reports that they’re planning to boost the brand by rolling out seven new launches within five years, including updates to the Giulia and the we-need-to-see-in-North-America-hot-hatch, Giulietta,

” [Alfa Romeo Brand chief Timothy Kuniskis] said ‘the timing of our expansion plans couldn’t be more optimal’ given the premium market is forecast to grow at twice the rate of the mainstream passenger car segment. Like the Jeep and Maserati brands, Alfa will put a fresh focus on electrified powertrains and discontinue diesel”

Also, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO reports that the company will be debt free by the end of this month. Sergio Marchionne informed investors that being debt-free,

“is a fundamental change in how this company is perceived. It is a significant milestone in the process of healing of a structural weakness.”

We at SuperCars.Net wish everyone the best of luck at FCA and we look forward to what the future has in store!

RX Nut Butter Is Weird, and Insanely Good

I know what you’re thinking — eating peanut or almond butter out of a squeeze pack is weird — but hear me out. Individually-packaged nut butter has been around since Skippy pedaled tubes of viscous peanuts to third graders in the nineties. Skippy was ahead of its time; it no longer packages its peanut butter in nine-ounce Squeeze Stix, but portable packets have picked up a following since, chiefly from athletes and protein fiends. It was good in grade school, but it’s better now.

RXBAR is the latest brand to take on nut butter. The company redefined protein bars — and the graphic design on protein bar packaging — with its “no B.S.” bars that contain only three or four pronounceable ingredients, all of which are listed in bold on the front of the wrapper. It’s taken the same tact with its nut butter.

RXBAR’s 32-gram packets come in three flavors: Vanilla Almond Butter (one egg white, 18 almonds, one half of a date), Honey Cinnamon Peanut Butter (one egg white, 27 peanuts, one half of a date) and plain old peanut butter (also one egg white, 27 peanuts and one half of a date). The three vary in flavor due to a handful of minor ingredients that aren’t listed on the package, like cinnamon, coconut oil, vanilla, honey and sea salt.

Like its bars, RX Nut Butter is quite tasty, but requires a little bit of open-mindedness, mostly due to texture. Try an RXBAR next to a Clif Bar, and you’ll get the picture. The nut butters are smooth but slightly gooier compared to the peanut butter you keep in a jar at home. In this case, different is good though. Eat these with yogurt and granola in the morning, as a condiment for an apple during a day hike, or plain when your stomach starts to growl audibly in the office at 11 am.

‘The Sisters Brothers’ Trailer

Two of our all-time favorite actors, Jake Gyllenhaal and Joaquin Phoenix, co-star in what looks like it’s gonna be a helluva western movie, ‘The Sisters Brothers’.

Set in the Wild West, in 1850’s Oregon, the story follows Eli and Charlie Sisters, two hitmen brothers hunting a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The action-packed dark comedy is directed by acclaimed director Jacques Audiard and it also features three other greats: John C. Reilly, Riz Ahmed, and Rutger Hauer. Arriving in theaters October 12, 2018.

Blast from the past: Aston Martin announces limited run of V12 Vantage V600

The old adage goes the customer is always right. In the case of the Aston Martin Vantage V600, we think they got it very right indeed.

Aston Martin recently released the new Vantage, a lithe, neon green sports car that looks like something out of a sci-fi comic book. Despite the futuristic impression it gives off, the Vantage pays its dues to its roots; that shape is unmistakably Aston.

The company has never been afraid of looking to its past for design inspiration – look at any model in the Aston Martin lineup today and you can trace elements of its design and execution back to the DB5 and even the original 2-Litre Sports released under David Brown back in 1948. That car is so influential to the Aston bloodline that his initials grace the company’s grand tourers to this day.

For the V600, Aston Martin customers commissioned the return of another historic namebadge for the company, with V600 having adorned a bonkers limited-run twin-supercharged 600bhp Vantage built without ABS – a last hurrah for that incarnation of the Vantage before tightening emissions regulations edged it out of the lineup.

Fast forward to 2018: the new Vantage V600

Aston Martin says the spirit of that original car from 20 years ago carries on in this new incarnation. Based on the outgoing ‘VH’ Vantage, the 2018 Aston Martin V12 Vantage V600 features the charismatic 6-litre Aston V12 up front, upgraded to produce 600bhp, much like its namesake.

Just fourteen examples of the new V600 will be produced, with Aston promising the ultimate analogue Vantage, which should appeal to nostalgic fans of the brand who seek the on-edge feel of supercars from the brand’s history but without the danger, age-related issues or risk of breakdown that come with it.

To that end there is no semi-automatic ‘box – the V600 comes with a seven-speed manual transmission, connecting the driver directly with the experience of shoving that 600bhp to the rear wheels.

Keeping the V600 on the road is front and read dual independent wishbone suspension with three-stage adaptive damping for a sporty feel when required and a more comfortable ride when not.

While the body shape is that of the old model, aggressive styling cues let the in-the-know observer know that this is no ordinary Vantage. That bodywork is fully carbon fibre, with a strake along the side hinting at the menacing potential of the car. A darkened grille adds to the V600’s presence while providing cooling to the V12, while at the rear a quad exhaust juts from a carbon-fibre diffuser.

Aston Martin says the V12 Vantage V600 is available on request, with the fourteen models slated for delivery in the autumn.

How much do you want to be among the fourteen lucky souls to get behind the wheel of the V12 Vantage V600?

Outdoor Activities with the new Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster

Some people play Badminton in their leisure time. Some play ping pong, and some play chess. The Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster is for those who like to jet ski.

Bear with me on that analogy – with the GT S Roadster that Mercedes-AMG has just announced, you get all of the kicks of the AMG GT S coupe, but you get to enjoy them out in the fresh air.

Slotting in between the current lineup of the AMG GT Roadster (for those that enjoy lycra-ing up of a weekend and heading out on a road bicycle) and the AMG GT C Roadster (for full-on lunatics who enjoy bobsledding in their spare time), the GT S Roadster gets the same twin-turbo AMG 4-litre V8, though in this instance it’s tuned to produce 515hp at 6250rpm and 494 lb-ft of torque between 1900 and 5000rpm.

That means it’s got the edge on the 469hp, 465 lb-ft GT Roadster, though isn’t quite as ballistic as the 550hp, 502 lb-ft AMG GT C Roadster.
b Mercedes-AMG GT S

b Mercedes-AMG GT S
Like all the best AMG Mercs, the GT S should still be able to get slidey at will thanks to that power being sent straight to the back wheels via an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.

The driver will get the full cacophonous AMG soundtrack as we’ve come to expect, too, with the roof down-experience allowing the sound to carry direct from the performance exhaust system also offered on the AMG GT C to their ears – up to a certain point on the way to the car’s 192mph top speed at least before the wind does its thing.

0-60 is dispatched with in 3.7 seconds – which should be fast enough for those seeking thrills but not all-out speed. That time still brings it within a tenth of a second of the more speed-focused GT C Roadster, though.

Stopping power isn’t bad either, with that limited-slip diff combining with composite brakes – 15.2 inch fronts with six-piston calipers and 14.2 inch rears with single-piston calipers – that AMG say will provide exceptionally short stopping distances and an outstanding resistance to fading.

Aluminium has been used throughout the bodywork to keep weight to a minimum while ensuring rigidity, and the car’s centre of gravity is kept low thanks to use of a three-layered fabric soft top – for when the noise (or the weather) becomes too much for the occupamnts.

European order books are open now, but US customers will have to wait until later this year when the AMG GT S Roadster will reach US dealerships.

If you were seeking outdoor excitement from your V8 Mercedes, which Roadster would you pick? The GT, GT S or GT C? Let us know in the comments!

A legendary name returns to the track: the Brabham BT62

Does 730ps-per-tonne sound good to you? Keep reading…

There is a history of big names from Formula One using their motorsport heritage to sell cars – some more successful than others.

The moniker of ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ has been employed by some of the greatest names throughout motorsport. Ferrari have been at it since the forties, Porsche, Ford and Audi are among those to have employed the tactic in endurance racing, and McLaren went so far as to name their hypercar the F1 in the nineties, as if the name (and blistering performance) wasn’t enough to turn heads.

Now, another brand has emerged that is looking to capitalise on its motorsport heritage with the launch of a customer vehicle, though the gap from win-to-sell is considerably longer than the accepted norm.

Introducing the Brabham BT62

Packing 700bhp and 492 ft-lbs of torque courtesy of a 5.4-ltre V8 engine, with a dry weight of less than 1000kg all wrapped up in a CARBON FIBRE body that looks like a Bugatti Chiron and a McLaren Senna had a baby, the BT62 is designed to be a mid-engine track weapon.

Gallery: Pictures from the Brabham BT62 launch

As you can see from the pictures, that power-to-weight ratio needs a lot of downforce to keep it on the straight and narrow. Thankfully, Brabham has thought of this and claims the BT62 is capable of delivering over 1200kg of downforce thanks to an aerodynamic package, which, coupled with Michelin slicks to be developed in conjunction with the French rubber specialists should help keep it glued to the track.

Brabham says the car has been designed to ‘demand more from its driver,’ and buyers will be able to join the Brabham driver development programme, which should hopefully mean BT62 drivers keep their very expensive toy on the asphalt.

Prices start from £1 million plus local taxes, but that’s before options have been considered, and production will be limited to just 70 cars – meaning that price tag should at least grant owners some exclusivity.

That production run is a nod to the 70-year heritage of the Brabham name in motorsport; the first 35 examples produced will pay further tribute to the 35 Brabham F1 team victories, earned between 1962 and 1992.

Multiple Le Mans winner David Brabham, son of founder of Brabham racing team Jack Brabham, unveiled the car at Australia House in London, alongside the BT19 racer that took Jack to victory in the 1966 French Grand Prix, with the BT62 being liveried to match its historic counterpart.

What do you think of the Brabham BT62? Would you buy one? If not – what would you have instead?

‘Venom’ Official Trailer

“You should be extremely afraid.” Arriving in theaters October 5, 2018, Venom is the fourth film released this year by Marvel. With Tom Hardy starring as the main character embodying one of the most infamous villains in the comic universe, it looks like we’re in for a hell of a ride.

The movie follows the origins of Spider-Man’s archenemy, Venom Symbiote– a sentient alien with an amorphous, liquid-like form, who finds its human host in journalist Eddie Brock (Hardy). They call it “one of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters”. We’re sold.

In the Future, Leather Will Be Made From Mushrooms Not Cows

Bolt Threads is the biotech company best known for its Microsilk, a synthetic spider silk that’s made through fermentation with just water, sugar and engineered yeast. It’s completely sustainable, and it looks and feels exactly like traditional silkworm silk, but it’s also significantly stronger. (Last year, we called it “the fabric of the future.”) Today, Bolt Threads has introduced its second material, Mylo, which is a synthetic leather whose main ingredient is mycelium, a fungus found in the root structure of mushrooms.

Unlike Microsilk, there’s no fermentation or yeast involved in the making of Mylo. Instead, it’s grown in large, environmentally-controlled warehouses, much like how the mushrooms you buy at the grocery store are grown. The mycelium is placed in large pans with corn stover (the ground up biowaste of corn, like the stalk), which the fungus eats and grows. Under the right conditions — humidity, temperature, CO2, oxygen and water volume — the mycelium grows into a soft foam, which is actually a network of very small fiber. Then it’s sliced into sheets, cured and put through a tanning process. The end product looks and feels very much like leather. It has comparable durability, strength and suppleness, too. The one aspect of Mylo that has surprised Dan Widmaier, Bolt Threads’ cofounder and CEO, is that fabric is really abrasion-resistant.

Bolt Threads is still early on in the development of Mylo, but they’ll release a handhag in June that’s made entirely of the synthetic leather. There’s also a collaboration with Stella McCartney in the works. In theory, Mylo could be used in any product — wallets, keychains, bags, shirts — that traditionally use leather. Like natural leather, Mylo can be dyed and will patina over time.

“In a planet that’s going from seven billion to 10 billion people, and a vast increase in middle-class consumers who want to use their disposable income to buy purchases to make their lives more comfortable, better, faster,” said Widmaier, “we don’t have enough space to make enough cows to make enough leather. We think there’s a need. People have a long history with leather. They love and enjoy it. And I think there’s a future where there’s no way to make enough to fill demand — finding ways to make a fantastic product that can fill that gap for the future is really important.”

“People have a long history with leather. They love and enjoy it. And I think there’s a future where there’s no way to make enough to fill demand — finding ways to make a fantastic product that can fill that gap for the future is really important.”

The modus operandi of Bolt Threads has been to use research and technology to create new materials for a sustainable future — and Mylo fits that bill. Making traditional leather is essentially a three-year process. It takes time to raise the cow and take care of the land it needs to eat. With Mylo, it’s a technology-driven material that takes a few weeks to grow. No animals are harmed in the process. The land, too, isn’t harmed by fertilizer and upkeep. And it’s all environmentally friendly.

Also unlike Microsilk, Mylo is a joint effort between Bolt Threads and Ecovative, a company who has been using mycelium for decades to create sustainable packaging solutions. Think an environmentally-friendly styrofoam for shipping a flat-screen TV. Mylo is a more refined foam that’s grown in much more carefully-controlled conditions, and it’s also grown in corn stover rather than wood chips. “[Evocative] mostly focus on mycelium packaging and they figured out the basis of growing the foam and then Bolt is taking it to the Mylo material and the consumer products category,” said Widmaier.

“There’s a ton of potential here,” said Widmaier. “This is the challenge and I think we talked about this before, and Bolt will have for a long time, is for anything that we make, the scale that we could be at is much bigger than where we’re at today. And so we want to make more of this, put this in the hands of people. We think it’s going to surprise a lot of consumers. It’s going to solve a real problem in the world around resource sustainability.”

Bolt Threads’ first Mylo bag will be available for pre-order this June. If interested, you can sign-up here to be alerted on its availability. Also, Stella McCartney will debut the Mylo Falabella Prototype 1 at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s “Fashioned from Nature” exhibit, which will open to the public on April 21 in London.

Victorinox’s Stalwart Tough Watch Now Comes With an Automatic Movement

Verdict: Back in 2014, Victorinox launched the I.N.O.X watch by running over it with construction equipment to prove its durability. The original I.N.O.X has been a core model for the brand since, getting numerous spin-offs. All of them, however, were quartz — until now. For the first time, Victorinox is giving the I.N.O.X an automatic mechanical movement.

The movement in question is the ETA 2824-2 automatic. It’s a durable, workhorse caliber that’s been proven in countless watches produced over the course of decades, and makes a lot of sense in a watch that purports to be “tough.” That said, the I.N.O.X Automatic’s press release says, “Due to the delicate nature of automatic movements, several R&Ds were necessary to bring this model to life.” What that entails, Victorinox doesn’t say, but we’ve reached out to a spokesperson for further comment.

Still, this looks like it has the makings of what made the standard I.N.O.X a favorite: it has the same, chunky 43mm case design and is water resistant to 200 meters. The watch does get some further refinement to match the mechanics within, notably, a transparent crystal case back to show off the movement, as well as a guilloche textured dial.

Who It’s For: Anyone who loves the look of the original I.N.O.X (or just likes burly watches in general), but wants to get into mechanical timepieces. The watch retails for well under a grand, and the ETA 2824 will not disappoint (it’s also very easy to service) making it an excellent choice for first-timers.

Key Features: Automatic movement. Guilloche dial. Transparent case back. Water-resistant to 200 meters.

Size: 43mm diameter

Movement: ETA 2824-2

Release Date: October, 2018

Price: $795 (leather strap); $850 (bracelet)

This Hyundai Geneva concept signals a new design era for the brand

Share

  • Pinterest

Hyundai says the Le Fil Rouge concept starts a new era for the brand’s design while keeping a strong link to its past. The automaker said all future Hyundai models will be based on the Le Fil Rouge theme, which is French for common thread.

“[The design] is so seamless it looks like the vehicle was drawn with one single line,” Sang-yup Lee, Hyundai’s head of styling, said while introducing the concept at the auto show here.

Hyundai said that the Le Fil Rouge theme is a reinterpretation of the design language that originated in 1974 with the brand’s Hyundai Coupe Concept.

The new theme creates a proportional character based on the so-called “golden ratio” – a common mathematical ratio found in nature – that enabled Hyundai designers to create an aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking composition.

The front and the rear pillars as well as the roof are blended into the overarching silhouette of the car. Proportional uniqueness is achieved through a long wheelbase, large wheels and short overhangs, which make the 4500mm car look bigger.

Hyundai calls this theme will be extended to all future Hyundai vehicles. The goal of this new theme is to bring instinctive beauty, creating emotional value and desirability in Hyundai vehicles, the automaker said in release.

When asked whether Le Fil Rouge shows Hyundai’s intention to move the brand upscale Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, vice president marketing and product at Hyundai Europe, said that was not the case. He said Le Fil Rouge features such as the cascading grille will appear in the brand’s production cars very soon.

BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe debuts in Geneva

Share

  • Pinterest

The new BMW 8-Series isn’t even out yet, but the automaker used the Geneva auto show to take the wraps off a four-door performance sedan concept version that it is calling the “BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe.” It’s best to think of this concept as a preview to an inevitable four-door 8-Series. Following the lead of the 6-Series Gran Coupe (which is actually quite nice), this concept is much like a 7-Series.

The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe takes the four-door coupe trend and applies it to a large passenger car, ahead of the debuts of the production versions of the 8-Series coupe and convertible later this summer and fall. This concept previews a later, four-door version of the platform due in 2019.

“The BMW 8-Series will take over as the new flagship model of the BMW lineup and, as such, combines unsurpassed sportiness and elegance,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president BMW Group Design. “The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe offers a look ahead to the most exotic and alluring variant of the new BMW 8-Series.”

The Concept M8 Gran Coupe shows off the latest BMW design elements, some of which might make production; the large coupe/sedan features a huge front fascia with exaggerated everything and a fastback profile leading to a duck-tail trunk lid.

2018 BMW M8 Concept M8 Gran Coupe rear

The BMW 8-Series coupe and convertible are expected to debut later this year.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door Coupe goes live at the Geneva auto show

“The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is designed to stir things up, to polarize — it should move you emotionally,” said Domagoj Dukec, vice president Design BMW M and BMW i. “With this car we want to reach people who are looking for something special and who want to stand out from the crowd. Here, BMW M is unmistakably taking luxury out of its comfort zone.”

The long wheelbase of the concept is almost dwarfed by the large features of the front fascia, meant to communicate a sense of performance, with the sleek line of the greenhouse skipping the flat plane roof of the 7-Series. The result is a visually small cabin positioned far back from the front axle and a coupe-like profile.

The surface details on the hood and doors also reinforce the performance flavor of the concept, which wears a Saleve Vert paint finish that appears to switch from grayish blue to green under different lighting conditions.

“The face of the new BMW 8-Series is evident in the new Concept’s front-end graphic,” BMW says. “The contours of the radiator grille kidneys broaden as they descend toward the road, emphasising the car’s low center of gravity. As on early BMW coupes, the kidney elements are linked by an unbroken grille surround, creating a large single element. The headlights are positioned slightly higher than the kidneys and give them the impression of sitting lower, which further emphasizes the car’s closeness to the asphalt. In contrast, the gold-colored kidney surround brings an added air of exclusivity to the front end. Within the headlights, the lighting technology familiar from the M8 GTE endurance racer provides a dynamic, hexagonal interpretation of BMW’s signature four-eyed front end, distilling elements of modern-day motor sport and luxurious quality into its inner details. Meanwhile, brawny air intakes in carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) guide the air to where it is required.”

We’ll see the 8-Series coupe and convertible later this year, but it will take a little longer for a production version of the 8-Series Gran Coupe to materialize. BMW’s pursuit of this unlikely segment, at a time when large SUVs are on their way back, may have more to do with Mercedes’ success in this price range — BMW lacks competitors to the S-Class coupe and cabrio, or at least will for a few more months.

Maserati takes its whole lineup at Geneva motor show and paints it black

Share

  • Pinterest

Maserati didn’t bring any new vehicles to the Geneva auto show, but it did outfit its whole line in matte black and added Nerissimo Editions of the Ghibili, Quattroporte and Levante to its luxury Italian fleet. Black chrome is used for the grille frame, trident, side vents, trunk and Maserati badge. Black grille bars, door handles, exhaust tips and window trim complete the package.

Inside, the Nerissimo cars receive minor changes. The Ghibili gets heated sport seats and steering wheel with dark mirror trim. Carbon fiber and piano black are available, as well as tinted windows and a power rear sunshade. The Quattroporte gets either carbon or piano black trim, a new rearview camera with grid lines, a power trunklid, Homelink and keyless entry that extends to the rear doors. The Levante SUV gets heated sport seats, four-zone climate control and power foot pedals.

2018 Maserati Ghibli

The company did make some news at the show. It’s GranLusso (luxury) and GranSport (sport) trims will now be available across the range as opposed to just in the Quattroporte. Maserati brought a Ghibli S Q4 GranLusso in white with 20-inch Urano diamond wheels and an Ermenegildo Zegna silk interior with red leather. It was flanked by a Quattroporte GranLusso in blue with beige leather and wood inserts, and a GranCabrio MC in white with 20-inch wheels, black brake calipers, leather and synthetic suede.

New to the range of sedans and SUVs is electronic power steering, which facilitates new safety functions like highway assist, lane keeping and blind spot detection. But don’t worry, Maserati says this improves comfort and handling yet retains the “excellent maneuverability typical of every Maserati.”

The model year 2018 GranTurismo and GranCabrio also got a gentle restyling, an interior upgrade and a new driver interface and infotainment system.

Jaguar releases ‘Greatest Hits’ XJ6 for Iron Maiden drummer

The Jaguar XJ is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and Jaguar’s Classic division is showing off the model’s “Greatest Hits” at the Geneva auto show in the form of a 1984 XJ6, restored for Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain.

A 1984 XJ6 seems like an unlikely starting point for such a project, but this is more than a restoration, as Jaguar Classic made quite a few custom design changes to the exterior, interior, suspension and drivetrain, creating a unique classic sedan in the process.

Over 4,000 parts were redesigned, refinished or replaced during the 3,500 hours devoted to this build, as Jaguar Classic worked with McBrain to create his dream XJ6.

The differences on the outside may seem subtle at first, but Jaguar created unique front and rear bumpers for this 4.2-liter XJ6. It also flared the body and reprofiled the front and rear wheel arches, which house custom 18-inch wire wheels that wear 235/45R-18 Pirelli P Zero tires. Still not done, Jaguar converted the headlights to LEDs, fabricated unique door sills and fitted the rear suspension with adjustable dampers. The Classic division fitted this XJ6 with modern door sealing and sound insulation for reduced wind and road noise. Inside, there’s an integrated touchscreen featuring satellite navigation, a rearview camera and a phone. Jaguar even upgraded systems like air conditioning and remote central locking. In a project this extensive, you can be sure that the interior has been completely retrimmed, and the finished Jag now wears a bright red leather interior.

Jaguar refitted the interior with new seats and retrimmed everything, in addition to adding a new sound system.

“Creating this ‘Greatest Hits’ XJ, and the whole process of bringing someone’s automotive dream to life, has been extraordinarily rewarding for the Jaguar Classic team,” said Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic director. “It’s been a pleasure to work with Nicko, and we’re looking forward to hearing the reaction to this project.”

And, of course, there is a modern sound system with guitar amplifier-inspired control knobs made from aluminum, as well as USB connectivity.

“This is my ultimate XJ — my third, and lovingly, named ‘Johnny 3,'” McBrain said. “It has been a true labor of love between Jaguar Classic and myself. I’m so excited by its completion and especially to be showing it at Geneva — it really is a Greatest Hits edition, and to me it defines what the Jaguar XJ is all about. It’s a credit to the craftsmanship of the Jaguar Classic team. We couldn’t have timed it better, this being the 50th anniversary of XJ — my favorite of all Jaguar vehicles.”

The reborn XJ6 also features harder-to-spot custom touches like recessed fuel caps and Series 2 XJ wing mirrors and door handles, for a more elegant look. The flared wheel arches give this XJ a wider stance — which suits this bodystyle well — while 18-inch wire wheels give it a classic air.

Wheel choice has always been one of the most difficult aspects of the look of an XJ, and the larger-diameter wire wheels chosen for this build work surprisingly well without signaling a significant departure from a stock appearance.

“Preserved components from Nicko’s first XJ6, which spent many years on the grounds of the home of Iron Maiden bass guitarist Steve Harris following Nicko’s move to America, are present elsewhere in the build too: from the iconic Jaguar leaper hood mascot, which first attracted Nicko to buy the car, to the original ignition keys from 1984,” Jaguar said.

Mercedes-AMG stretches GT sports car into a 4-door for Geneva

Mercedes-Benz broke the cone of silence on the AMG GT Four-Door Coupe (known as a “sedan” outside Germany) at the Geneva auto show on Tuesday. The Affalterbach-bred sports sedan gets a choice of the new 429-hp, 384-lb-ft 3.0-liter I6 in the GT53 model, a 577-hp, 553-lb-ft twin-turbo V8 in the GT63 or 630 hp, 627 lb-ft from the same V8 in the GT63 S model. All get nine-speed automatics. The I6 comes with a torque converter automatic; the V8s replace that torque converter with clutches in Mercedes’ MCT transmission; all get 4Matic all-wheel drive. Top speed is 174 mph for the six, 193 mph for the GT63 and 195 for the GT63 S. The short version: Speed won’t be a problem.

Balancing that speed will be a touch of efficiency. That sixer gets Mercedes’ new EQ Boost starter/alternator that can add 21 hp and 184 lb-ft in short bursts, along with a 48-volt electrical system.  The V8 versions come with AMG cylinder management, which can deactivate up to four cylinders, depending on conditions, to save fuel. We don’t know how much fuel yet because we don’t have EPA figures.

Mercedes is calling this its first four-door sports car. It follows the company’s “sensual purity” design philosophy with a long hood featuring two power domes, a low greenhouse and AMG’s new grille and “shark nose” front bumper. Blacked-out side window frames elongate the profile, as does the raked rear window. Both front and back lights are slim and the rear gets an extendable spoiler.

The bodyshell was developed alongside the company’s race cars, using motorsport analysis and simulation methods to reinforce the structure where necessary for “maximum performance.” In the center and tail end, Mercedes uses carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic to save weight and improve stiffness, giving an “optimum basis for high lateral dynamics potential.”

All AMG GT four-doors get adaptive damping. I6 models come with steel springs, while the V8s get the company’s multichamber air suspension. Mercedes adds that the electronically controlled locking rear differential (standard on GT63 and GT63 S, not available on the GT53) has a new reinforced mount to lower noise, vibration and harshness. The 4Matic plus AWD system uses an electromechanically controlled clutch to connect the front and rear axles. The system varies the torque as necessary depending on driver input. Like the E63 AMG, the GT four-door gets a drift mode where all the power is sent rearward. Drift mode is standard on the S, optional on the GT63 and not available on the American-spec GT53.

Additionally, the V8 models come standard with rear-wheel steering, using the same setup as the rest of this new breed. At slow speeds, the rear wheels point in the opposite direction to tighten turning radius; at higher speeds, they turn in the same direction to increase stability using two electric actuator motors.

Like all good AMGs, the GT four-door comes with drive modes for slippery, comfort, sport, sport-plus and race that affect the steering, power application, transmission and traction control. As you turn the knob toward race, you get more power, quicker shifts and less intervention from the safety systems.

As for the most important safety system, the brakes, Mercedes has you covered. V8 models get six-piston front calipers and single-piston floating calipers at the rear. The GT63 gets red clampers, the GT63 S gets yellow. The GT53 has smaller discs but still a six-pack of pistons in front inside silver calipers. Ceramic brakes are offered, in bronze. Surrounding those brakes are 19-, 20- or 21-inch AMG-specific wheels.

Moving from the corners to the interior, the GT four-doors get a new steering wheel with controls for infotainment and drive modes, turbine air vents like its two-door counterpart, two 12.3-inch widescreen displays and the usual central controller with swipe and pinch motions. A program called AMG Track Pace can keep your lap times, check your sprint times and log your lateral and longitudinal g-forces.

Elsewhere inside, buyers will be offered the usual array of Mercedes stuff, including diamond quilting on the seats in leather or microfiber, carbon-fiber or brushed metallic accents and an executive rear seat package that comes with a touchscreen between the back seats for calling up dynamic data via the AMG menu, controlling the ambient lighting or adjusting the climate control and seat heating.

The first AMG GT four-doors come in early 2019; the I6-powered GT53 comes later next year.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia Nurburgring editions to debut in Geneva

To celebrate two separate records at the famed Nurburgring circuit, Alfa Romeo plans to offer special-edition versions of its Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan and Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV, and will bring both to the Geneva auto show in a matter of days.

Back in 2016, the Giulia Quadrifoglio set a lap time of 7 minutes, 32 seconds around the ‘Ring, making it the fastest production sedan (at the time) to lap the circuit. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio followed a year later with a lap of 7 minutes, 51.7 seconds. The Stelvio’s record stands to this day even though the Giulia’s was surpassed a short time later by a Jaguar XE SV Project 8.

And to celebrate both records, the Italian automaker will build 108 examples of “NRING” editions of each model, signifying the 108 years of the Alfa Romeo marque.

Each NRING edition will wear an exclusive Circuito gray color and feature carbon-fiber side skirt inserts, mirror caps and front badges. Each NRING edition will also feature an Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, Sparco racing seats with red stitching and a Mopar automatic transmission knob with a carbon-fiber insert. When it comes to infotainment, both versions will come optioned with Alfa Connect 3-D Nav infotainment systems with 8.8-inch screens and the Harman Kardon premium audio package. The biggest change in terms of equipment will be an all-new bare carbon-fiber roof for the Giulia.

2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 premieres at the Geneva auto show with an upgraded engine and updated tech

“It is no coincidence that these two outstanding cars bear the name of the famous German circuit: Alfa Romeo cars started to record victories at the Nurburgring in the 1930s, in the hands of world-class drivers such as Tazio Nuvolari, who won the German Grand Prix at the wheel of a 8C 2300 Tipo Monza in 1932 and a Tipo B-P3 in 1935,” Alfa Romeo said in announcing the special-edition vehicles. “Other memorable years were 1966, when the Giulia Sprint GTA became the first GT to make it round the ‘Ring in under 10 minutes, and 1975, when the 33 TT 12 driven by Arturo Merzario triumphed in Germany before going on to win the World Sportscar Championship. Last but not least, on June 10, 1993, Nicola Larini’s 155 V6 Ti won both heats of the most prestigious race of the DTM championship, held on the Nurburgring circuit. The Italian driver repeated Nuvolari’s feat by winning the race with a crushing victory over the other cars, all of them German.”

No word yet on how many of these special-edition vehicles (if any) the U.S. will get, but as the Geneva auto show gets going we hope to hear more concrete details about price and availability.

Hennessey’s 1,600-hp Venom F5 is headed to Geneva

Designed to be the fastest road car on the planet with a promised top speed in excess of 300 mph, the Venom F5 is heading to the Geneva motor show next week after an official debut at SEMA late last year. This should give the all-new hypercar a wider audience, even though it won’t get anywhere near its top speed on Swiss roads.

The Venom F5, just 24 of which will be built, is powered by a 7.4-liter biturbo V8 pumping out a claimed 1,600 hp and 1,300 lb-ft of torque, with all that power sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed single-clutch paddle-shift transmission. With a curb weight of just 2,950 pounds, the Venom F5 can get to 186 mph in less than 10 seconds, while a trip from 0 to 249 mph reportedly takes less than 30 seconds.

As you may have noticed back when the car debuted at SEMA, the Venom F5’s recipe for getting north of 200 mph is quite different from that of the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron, which the Venom will taunt in Geneva.

Bugatti Chiron speed run

Now, about that 300-mph-plus claim; Hennessey has yet to give the Venom F5 an opportunity to really stretch its legs, but company founder and CEO John Hennessey believes that the car will be able to top 300 mph.

With a starting price of $1.6 million, the Venom F5 still promises to be a civilized machine rather than some kind of top fuel dragster wearing a Potemkin-style, Lambo-shaped shell. The cabin will be filled with Alcantara and carbon fiber, even though interior photos do not evidence the presence of any cupholders. Perhaps that’s somewhere in the option book, which will reportedly offer $600,000 worth of additional equipment. (All we’re asking for is a cupholder — how much can it possibly be?)

In the meantime, we’ll wait for a video of the Venom F5 proving its claimed feats of speed.

BMW teases Geneva motor show reveal on social media

BMW revealed a darkened picture of its Geneva auto show concept on its Instagram page on Wednesday. It’s in a sweet shade of seafoam green and looks a lot like an Aston Martin Rapide. We’re guessing it’s a variant of the new 8-Series, possibly the M8 or what might become the 8-Series Gran Coupe. We don’t have much to go on.

If it is an 8-Series, we know it’ll get coupe, convertible and M variants. In September, rumors were swirling of a four-door version. It will replace the 6-Series, which never sold particularly well, and it’ll probably go live for the 2019 model year. A 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is probable, as well as a hybrid. If the 7-Series can do it, why not the 8? We’ll get more details in a week when we have boots on the ground in Switzerland.
