We love a good t-shirt at Gear Patrol and we’ve recommended some pretty spectacular tees in the past, but for sheer value for money, there are few better options than Uniqlo’s Supima cotton t-shirts. Supima cotton, if you aren’t familiar, is the brand name for American-grown Pima cotton, an extra-long staple cotton prized for its incredibly soft feel and durability. According to Supima, its product makes up less than one percent of the cotton grown in the world, which is probably why most t-shirts that use the material tend to cost $30 or more. Uniqlo’s cost $10.
I, in fact, own somewhere around a dozen of them and wear one almost every single day because they’re so incredibly comfortable, and after years of wearing and washing have not frayed or loosened up. But there is one issue with Uniqlo’s Supima t-shirts: for the longest time, they haven’t been offered in a pocket variant, much to my dismay. This is about to change, however, as Uniqlo’s latest collaboration with designer Tomas Maier will bring a pocketed Supima tee to the lineup.
The addition of the pocket in front breaks up the monotony of what would otherwise be a plain-jane shirt while adding a small dose of utility (breast pockets are great for storing sunglasses). Further, the shirt features ribbing around the neck and sleeves, and Uniqlo notes the shirt has a slim fit, but a slightly looser collar. That sounds like a recipe for the perfect summer tee-shirt, and while the $15 asking price tacks on a 50 percent premium to the standard Supima t-shirt, it’s still a fantastic bargain. I plan to pick up another dozen.
