Siduna is a new watch brand based out of Sweden, and for its first timepiece launch, it’s bringing back the design of a ’70s pilot’s chronograph: the Lemania “Viggen.” The Viggen was manufactured by Lemania for the Sweedish Air Force during the early 1970s, and, according to Hodinkee, was mostly worn by pilots of the famed (and totally rad) Saab 37 Viggen fighter jet. Approximately 400 of those pieces were originally made, so a reproduction of sorts is a welcome addition to the market.
But while the new Siduna M3440’s dial, case and bezel certainly look the part, there are a few key differences. The most obvious is that the Siduna logo takes the place of the Lemania, but the most notable is the fact that the new watch uses a self-winding movement in place of the original’s hand-cranker. Buyers have the choice of two movement options here — a standard automatic chronograph or one with an added flyback module. According to Siduna, both movements are based on the venerable Valjoux 7750. Ensoncsing those movements is a 42mm case that’s just over 16mm thick.
The watch is available for pre-order now, with delivery planned for November 2018. Overall, the watch seems to be very reasonably priced: the standard automatic will run you about $2,260, while the flyback version will go for $2,830. Not bad for a complicated timepiece.
