It’s hard to do a buying guide without Uniqlo taking up a spot on the list. The brand has mastered better basics at a great price point and the Over Shirt Jacket is proof. It uses a soft jersey fabric made with 80 percent polyester and 20 percent rayon, giving it a precise blend of warmth and silky softness. It’s relaxed enough to throw over a shirt or even chunky sweater and the damn thing only costs $70.

If you’re looking for something even more indulgent, this is the cream of the cashmere crop. Noah’s CPO Shirt takes after Navy-issue overshirts, with its dual chest pockets and thick anchor-engraved buttons. It’s bare bones, but not no-frills. The one frill it does have is an over-the-top English-woven cashmere from centuries-old mill Joshua Ellis. It’s among the softest cashmere out there and the plum colorway will turn a few heads.
