The Future of Wi-Fi Technology: All Your Questions, Answered

If the events of the past year have left you in search of better home Wi-Fi, you’re not alone. An emerging standard called Wi-Fi 6 may be part of the answer. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 is a set of ground rules for how your gadgets communicate. This update focuses on giving your home more bandwidth, space for data to move. That means more devices on your network can operate at max speed, all at once. And that’s just the beginning. The next version, called Wi-Fi 6E, will let devices use a brand-new wireless spectrum. Expect it in 2021.

Why haven’t I even heard of Wi-Fi 5?

That’s easy: it didn’t exist until Wi-Fi 6. The Wi-Fi Alliance, in charge of writing the Wi-Fi rules, used to use a more awkward naming scheme. What is now called Wi-Fi 5 was known as 802.11ac when it was released in 2014. The name Wi-Fi 6 was ginned up to save us all from having to talk about 802.11ax.

What makes Wi-Fi 6 better than the Wi-Fi I already have?

Wi-Fi 6 supports data-transfer speeds that are up 40 percent faster than Wi-Fi 5, but that’s not actually what will make your life better. The flagship Wi-Fi 6 feature is efficiency. Its ability to expand the bandwidth of your home network and divide it up into more slices means more gadgets in a small space can run at top speed simultaneously.

When is Wi-Fi 6 coming?

Right now. Pretty much all smartphones, laptops and tablets released from 2020 on will have chipsets that support Wi-Fi 6. Routers that are Wi-Fi 6 certified are starting to come out as well. Devices started adopting it back in late 2019 and many gadgets, like all current-generation iPhones, already support it. Wi-Fi 6E, which goes even further, will start to get hammered out in 2021.

How do I get it?

If you want to get the benefits of Wi-Fi 6, you’ll need support on both ends: the phone or tablet or computer that’s using the Wi-Fi and the router that’s dishing it out. A network is only as fast as the slowest device in the loop. Higher-quality routers have the ability to make two networks at once — one for the speed demons and one for the slowpokes.

Should I upgrade?

No, not yet. Many of the older gadgets you own won’t support and won’t even need the potential maximum speeds Wi-Fi 6 offers. What’s more, Wi-Fi 6E, coming in 2021, will provide an even bigger improvement, and you’re better off waiting for that to take hold.

Does Wi-Fi 6 have anything to do with 5G?

Wi-Fi 6 and 5G are designed to similar ends — faster data-transfer speeds and support for more devices simultaneously — but they’re two completely separate technologies. Wi-Fi 6 is a better way to connect to the internet indoors and 5G as a better way to connect to cellular networks when you’re out and about. Devices that support Wi-Fi 6 won’t necessarily support 5G, but if it has 5G, it almost certainly has Wi-Fi 6.

Apple’s Beloved iPod Nano Is Officially “Vintage.” Here’s Why That Matters

The iPod Nano is officially a “vintage” Apple product. Apple recently added the seventh-generation iPod Nano, which is the newest iPod Nano (last updated in 2015), to its Vintage and Obsolete Products list, which is a list of products that Apple hasn’t sold for more than five years.

Apple designated the seventh-generation iPod Nano as a “vintage” product for more than sentimental reasons. It means that for the next two years the seventh-generation iPod Nano will still be eligible for repairs and service at Apple’s Genius Bars or by other Apple Authorized Service Providers. However, after that two-year window, the iPod Nano will switch from “vintage” to “obsolete” and Apple will no longer will be on the hook for repairs.

Basically, if you have a seventh-generation iPod Nano and you love it, you have a two-year window to get it fixed by Apple if it breaks down.

The seventh-generation iPod Nano joins all other iPod Nano models on Apple’s list of Vintage and Obsolete Products. The first-generation model was introduced in 2005 and it was notable because it was the smallest iPod with a screen. It had a click wheel and a vertical design similar to the original iPod. Over the next 12 years, Apple redesigned the iPod Nano a number of times and adding more iPhone-esque features, including a color display, a Home button and even a video camera.

Today, the only iPod model that Apple sells is the iPod Touch, which was last updated in 2019. It starts at $199.

The Best Accessories for Your Apple Watch

The Apple Watch has been the most popular smartwatch since its advent in 2015. In fact, it’s been so popular that it hasn’t just been outselling every other smartwatch, but in 2019 the Apple Watch actually outsold the entire Swiss Watch industry, which includes manufacturers like Rolex, Swatch, TAG Heuer and Tissot. Naturally, with more Apple Watches out in the work, more people are looking for accessories — such as new bands, cases and chargers — to make their Apple Watch feel more personal. And boy, there’s a lot out there.

The good news is the Apple Watch hasn’t changed that in the past years. It still looks mostly the same and chargers the exact same way, for example. There are really only two things to remember when shopping for an Apple Watch accessory. First, the Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, Series 6 and the SE all have the same size body, so the same case or protective screen will work with all of them. (The outlier is the Series 3, which shares the older design of the Series 1 and Series 2, both of which Apple doesn’t make anymore.) And second, if you’re shopping for a band, make sure to get the correct size. All the latest Apple Watches — except the Series 3 or older — come in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm.

If you’re in the market for a new band for your Apple Watch, the truth is that Apple sells a lot of great ones. Some of them are exclusives, like the all-new Solo Loop ($49) and Braided Solo Loop ($99), and need to be purchased directly from Apple. However, Amazon also sells many of the same bands for a little cheaper. (Check ’em out here.)

Ring Always Home Cam is your key to cutting-edge home security

Thanks to smart home technology, we now have multiple ways to keep our residences safe from break-ins. Moreover, advanced sensors can now detect air quality, motion, and so much more. These types of gadgets are designed to give users peace of mind the moment they step out of their homes. One of the manufacturers that provide these convenient solutions is Amazon. Among the collection of hardware they were showing off last week, the Ring Always Home Cam is perhaps the most innovative.

Earlier we introduced the 2020 Echo Show 10 smart display. Thanks to its motorized base it can double as a security camera that provides a 360-degree view of the room. However, the static base means you will need other cameras to augment its coverage. This is where the Ring Always Home Cam shines as an air-borne and mobile unit that moves around the house. Now, owners can check more sections with just one device.

According to Ring founder Jamie Siminoff: “We knew we had to invent a completely new type of device that was able to move freely throughout the home to give more viewpoint flexibility. To do this, we needed to bring together best-in-class hardware and software technologies to create something no one else had done before and build on a foundation of privacy while moving safely throughout the home.”

Our only gripe with the Ring Always Home Cam is the lack of a manual control option. Instead, you need to set a flight path for the drone will follow. On the other hand, this ensures it does not bump into anything. Additionally, its pace is just right and gives us enough time to spot if something is amiss.

Caviar uses the iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max to honor the Apple 1 computer

Apple is probably ready to announce the iPhone 12 series soon. Traditionally, this is a big deal for consumers who finally get to see what the next generation offers. However, leaks are not making it easy for the manufacturer. Now, Caviar steps forward to give us a glimpse of what the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Sadly, only the rear section and the frame are visible. The shop is paying tribute to the first Apple computer with its Apple 1 and Apple 1 Light.

Although the full specifications of the new handset are not yet available, there are a few that Caviar gives away. Storage size options are apparently 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB only. Next is the triple-camera configuration which appears to have the LiDAR scanner on board. While the two variants both honor Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs’ first hand-built computer, each has their own distinct presentation.

The Apple 1 is the range-topping model that shows off a wooden rear panel with the original Apple lettering of its namesake. Just below it is a glossy titanium accent in the shape of a monitor with a bunch of code. Further down is the iconic programming text “Hello World” and the word “Computer” in the design of the desktop’s vintage keyboard buttons.

Its most remarkable feature which is the small piece of a motherboard sourced from an actual Apple 1 computer. As for the Apple 1 Light, It just sports a wooden back panel and the Apple lettering right under a small fragment of an Apple 1 motherboard. Caviar is offering these unique iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max units in limited numbers only.

The Best Smartwatches of 2020

A smartwatch isn’t going to replace your smartphone. In fact, it’s more of a smartphone accessory these days. They have tiny screens and many of the apps you use every day — Instagram, Twitter, Facebook — don’t have smartwatch apps. Plus, most smartwatches don’t have LTE, meaning they can’t receive calls or texts when not tethered to your smartphone or connected to wi-fi. But smartwatches do have some advantages. They show you who’s calling, texting or emailing you without forcing you to look at your phone. They effectively replace your need for a dedicated fitness tracker. And some look pretty cool. Whatever your lifestyle and which smartphone you use, you’re bound to find something that suits you.

Not all smartwatches are the same, however. Most fall between a fitness tracker and something that relays smartphone notifications to your wrist. Some smartwatches can work untethered, completely autonomously from a smartphone — you can make calls, send texts and navigate directions, all while your smartphone is miles away. There are also hybrid smartwatches, made by mechanical watch manufacturers like Tag Heuer, Fossil and Withings, that have sensors to track fitness and traditional watch battery that lasts months.

Before pulling the trigger on an Apple Watch Series 6, or one of the new Android smartwatches made by Samsung or Huawei, do some research. Make sure it’s a smartwatch that’ll work to its full potential with your current smartphone and matches your budget and how you want to use it. If you work out a lot, get a fitness-focused smartwatch. If you go off the grid, get an LTE-connected one. Whatever your case, make sure you know the basics.

Before Buying, Here’s What to Know

3G, 4G, LTE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. There are different ways a smartwatch can connect to a smartphone. A Bluetooth-enabled smartwatch pairs with a smartphone just like a Bluetooth speaker. It’s the most basic of connections and has the shortest range; if the smartphone and smartwatch are too far apart, the connection dies. Most smartwatches will connect to a known wi-fi network as well. When connected, the smartwatch can still receive notifications (calls, texts, emails) as long your smartphone has an active data connection.

3G and 4G describe generations of the cellular network technologies and their subsequent transmission speeds — basically, it’s how fast your smartwatch can load data. A smartwatch with built-in 4G is going to be faster than a smartwatch with built-in 3G. However, the difference between smartwatches with 3G and 4G will probably be nominal since neither will be running heavily data-driven apps.

Most smartwatches are available in LTE or cellular models, too. The main advantage of an LTE connected smartwatch is that it can work completely untethered from a smartphone. Since it has a built-in cellular radio, the smartwatch can place and receive phone calls and stream music independent of your phone. There are a few caveats, though. The battery life will likely be worse. The smartwatch will probably be bulky. And you’ll have to pay a monthly fee to add the smartwatch to your cellular plan. (Consult your cell carrier for exact info.) Plus, they just tend to be more expensive than regular “GPS only” models.

For more information on 4G LTE smartwatches, read Computerworld‘s ‘One more time: An LTE smartwatch is a stupid idea.’

Compatibility. Not all smartwatches are compatible with all smartphones. For example, the Apple Watch only works with an iPhone, and all smartwatches running Android 2.0 will work with any Android, via the Android Wear app, but not all iOS features will carry over and some of the apps work wonky together, such as iMessage and every Android messaging app. Basically, if you own an iPhone, I recommend getting an Apple Watch; and if you have an Android smartphone, get one of the numerous Android 2.0 offerings.

Heart rate sensor. Knowing your heart rate is the most important fitness metric — experts agree. The data, taken both during and after your workout, will help you achieve certain fitness goals. If you’re serious about working out or just improving your cardiovascular health, you want a smartwatch with a heart rate sensor.

Built-in GPS. This is still a rare feature in smartwatches and wearables in general. For fitness, the built-in GPS is able to track speed, distance and location, all of which can help calculate calories burned and determine the overall success of a workout. It can also help give you more accurate weather reports and navigation instructions if your smartphone isn’t nearby (and it won’t kill a lot of data). It’s mainly a tool to gauge fitness, however; like heart-rate sensors, it’s mainly for people into fitness.

Battery life. The main complaint with smartwatches is battery life. There are very few on the market that can last longer than 24 hours, so manage expectations. Most of today’s high-end smartwatches have a bright LCD screen or AMOLED displays, which are beautiful but tend to kill the battery. Basically, expect to take it off at night to charge.

The overall look and lifestyle. At the end of the day, a smartwatch isn’t just another device — it’s part of your wardrobe. You’re not going to put it away when you want, like your smartphone, so you should like the way it looks. Also, smartwatches come in all sorts of elegant or rugged options. If you want a more stylish option to match your silk shirt and selvage denim jeans, go for the LG Watch Style. If you plan on taking it to the beach or hiking, get a rugged and water-resistant model, like the Garmin Forerunner 235.

Best Overall: Apple Watch Series 6

Apple

Sizes: 40mm or 44mm
Sensors: blood oxygen, always-on altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, electrocardiogram (ECG), GPS, compass, LTE (optional), U1 Ultra Wideband chip
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
Battery Life: up to 18 hours

The Series 6 is the perfect smartwatch for iPhone owners who want the best that Apple has to offer. It’s is the only current Apple Watch model that has an always-on display (because Apple discontinued the Series 5), which is the biggest difference that most people will notice when compared against Apple’s two other Apple Watch models, the SE and Series 3. It’s also unique because has a blood oxygen sensor, an electrical heart sensor (so it’s capable of taking an ECG), and it comes in more premium finishes, including stainless steal and titanium. It’s available in GPS-only and LTE models.

Water resistance: up to 50 meters
Battery Life: up to 18 hours

The Apple Watch SE is probably the best Apple Watch for most people because it combines most of the Series’s 6 features and overall look, but is considerably most affordable. The big tradeoffs are that the Apple Watch SE doesn’t have an always-on display, the blood oxygen sensor or the electrical heart sensor (so it’s not capable of taking an ECG). It only comes in an aluminum finish, so it’s not going to be as scratch resistant as the Series 6’s more premium finishes. However, the Apple Watch SE does have optical heart sensor, similar to the one found in the Series 3, so it’s still about to record your heart rate. It also has most of the same sensors, including the gyroscope, compass, fall detection and the brand-new always-on altimeter. It’s available in GPS-only and LTE models.

Garmin’s Forerunner 945 offers most of the same fitness-focused features as the company’s even higher-end Fenix line of smartwatches. It lets you train for specific events, like a triathlon, where it can show your interval and transition times. It also works with most of the popular third-party products and apps, such as Final Surge and TrainingPeaks. Garmin partnered with Firstbeat, a company that specializes in physiology and heartbeat analytics, so the Forerunner 935 can give you deeper insights from your workout, such as your VO2 max and lactate threshold. Best Android Smartwatch: Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2

Size: 40mm or 44mm
Sensors: accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, heart-rate sensor, GPS, electrocardiogram (ECG), LTE (optional)
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
Battery Life: up to 18 hours

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is arguably one of the prettiest smartwatches out there. It’s petite, round and has a beautiful and bright always-on OLED display. The big differentiator between it and its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch Active (which was released earlier in 2019), is that “version 2” has a touch-sensitive bezel making it much easier to use. It has a decent battery life and works with Spotify Offline (you can download playlists and listen to them without your smartphone nearby). It also has sleep-tracking features that Apple’s offerings lack. It works best with Samsung smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3

Courtesy

Size: 41mm
Sensors: accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, heart-rate sensor, GPS, electrocardiogram (ECG), LTE (optional)
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
Battery Life: up to 18 hours

The Galaxy Watch 3 is more advanced than Samsung’s smartwatch, the more fitness-focused Galaxy Watch Active 2, but it’s also considerably more expensive. What that extra dough gets you is a physical rotating bezel (instead of the all-digital one on the Active 2), some more advanced sleep tracking and running features, a slightly better battery life, and an the option of more premium finishes (such as titanium). For the most part, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2 are actually pretty similar. The flagship model is just more geared for Samsung Galaxy smartphone owners who want a more substantial smartwatch that looks like it maybe could be Swiss-made.

Apple Watch Series 3

apple watch series 3 gear patrol full lead

Apple

Sizes: 38mm or 42mm
Sensors: heart rate monitor, GPS, altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
Battery Life: up to 18 hours

Released in 2017, the Series 3 is the oldest and cheapest Apple Watch that Apple currently sells. It has the same original body as the Series 1 and Series 2 — meaning a smaller display and ] larger bezels — and it definitely looks old compared to the newer Series 6 and SE. The Series 3 does have a built-in GPS and an optical heart sensor, so it’s still a good fitness tracker (although, the Series 3 does lack some of the SE and Series 6’s key sensors, such as the always-on altimeter and the built-in compass, so it’s probably not as great of hikers and outdoors enthusiasts). Apple just recently discontinued the Series 3’s cellular model, so you have to buy a GPS-only model from now on. If you’re somebody who just wants a cheap Apple Watch to track your workouts, the Series 3 is a good option (although you should seriously consider going with the Apple Watch SE).

Fitbit Versa 3

Fitbit

Size: 36mm
Sensors: accelerometer, optical heart rate monitor, altimeter, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, NFC
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
Battery Life: up to 6 days; ~3 days with always-on display

Released in 2020, the Fitbit Versa 3 is a good entry-level smartwatch for iPhone or Android users alike. It’s a big upgrade over the Versa 2 mainly due to the fact that it has a built-in GPS and a significantly better heart-rate tracking. It also has a built-in speaker and microphone, which the Versa 2 lacked, so you can actually hear what Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa has to say when ask it a question, instead of having to read the voice assistant’s response on the smartwatch’s screen. With the lowered price of the Apple Watch Series 3, it’s actually pretty difficult to recommend the Versa 3 for people who have an iPhone.

Size: 36mm
Sensors: ECG, EDA, skin temperature, accelerometer, optical heart rate monitor, altimeter, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, NFC
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
Battery Life: up to 6 days; ~3 days with always-on display

The Sense replaces the Ionic as Fitbit’s new flagship smartwatch. That said, the Sense shares a lot in common with the Versa 3, with the only major differences being health/wellness related. Unlike the Versa 3, the Sense has three brand-new sensors: an ECG (to potentially give you an early detection of atrial fibrillation), an EDA (to detect stress) and a skin temperature sensor (to give you early indications if you’re coming down with a fever or other illness). Overall, the Sense is a good third-party smartwatch for people want a lot of wellness data, but it’s kind of expensive considering how similar it is to the Versa 3.

You Can Now Order the First Folding-Screen Laptop

There have been a number of foldable smartphones released in the past two or three years, mostly by Samsung, like the recent Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip, but Lenovo has won the race to the first folding-screen laptop. Meet the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold.

At first glance, the ThinkPad X1 Fold is essentially a tablet with a beautiful 13.3-inch OLED screen. However, it can be used in a number of different ways. First and most obviously, it can be used as a large tablet. Second, you can use it as a traditional laptop; it rests horizontally thanks to its built-in kickstand and you can add a detachable miniature keyboard, which Lenovo sells separately. And third, you can use it as a really small laptop; the screen folds horizontally and the bottom half of the screen turns into a touchscreen keyboard. Lenovo also sells a optional stylus that can be used with the ThinkPad X1 Fold.

lenovo x1 fold

Lenovo

The ThinkPad X1 Fold definitely is definitely unique gadget, but its design is a little bit familiar. Its foldable screen folds inward so that its OLED screen is protected, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. The ThinkPad X1 Fold is definitely a larger device, however, but still weighing less than 2.2 pounds. The ThinkPad X1 Fold runs Windows 10 and will be available in a number of different configurations, including your choice of Intel’s latest 11th-generation processors (up to i7) and up to 1TB of storage.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is available for preorder right now and it starts at $2,499. That base model does not include the detachable miniature keyboard or the stylus.

Why I Absolutely Love My Crummy 10-Year-Old Webcam

When COVID-19 hit full force and so many of us started working from home, the available stock of webcams almost instantly disappeared. Ultra-HD webcams like Logitech’s Brio went from curiosity to essential overnight. I was fortunate enough to have a different option, and dug through my box of tangled cords to pull out an ancient, decade-old Logitech C200 to put it back in active rotation. It’s got garish design and practically prehistoric specs, so have I thought about upgrading? No, not for a second.

The pride of 2009, my trusty Logitech sports a VGA image sensor that can churn out a hefty 1.3MP image—with software enhancement. For standard video chat, perched atop the monitor for my desktop PC, it instead provides a workmanlike stream 640 x 480 standard definition stream with a frame rate like a flipbook. You can still find one on eBay for about $20 bucks.

But despite its utterly antediluvian specs, the C200 does everything I need it to do. It’s got USB (2.0!) for plugging into my desktop, and a clip for sitting atop my monitor and positioning at whatever angle I choose—which no laptop webcam can match. Its venerable drivers still cooperate wonderfully with Windows 10. And its image quality, while certainly poor, is astoundingly adequate, more than good enough to assure colleagues I am alive and conscious while its on-board mic provides positively intelligible sound. All that for about $20, or whatever the hell I actually paid for this thing back when Lost was still airing.

Its deficiencies I find equal parts charming and useful. It’s fun (to me) to be teleported back to a Myspace mindset whenever I drop into a Google Hangout. And while it may be irritating that the resolution isn’t high enough to render individual beard hairs and pores in great detail—haha I’m just kidding! That part rules!!

Unfortunately I know I’m an outlier. I suspect most people couldn’t as easily get away with the kind of technological tomfoolery that comes part and parcel with my job description. Appearing in a pixelated haze might reflect problematically poorly on more professional professions. But why should it!?

There are plenty of actual reasons to want a high-quality stream, whether it’s so grandma and grandpa can make out more than a grandkid-shaped smudge, or for putting out footage for public consumption. But for a 9am staff meeting in a Brady Bunch grid, I’ll opt for the absolute utmost adequacy.

How to Change Your iPhone’s Default Email App Back to Gmail

Apple recently rolled out iOS 14 which gave iPhones a bunch of new features like widgets, iMessage threads and a new App Library. It also did something a little unexpected: it reverted the default email app back to Apple’s own Mail app. It also reverted the default web browsing app back to Safari.

This appears to be a bug, but it obviously inconvenienced a lot of people who used a third-party email apps like Gmail. Fortunately there’s an pretty easy fix for both.

How to set Gmail as your iPhone’s default email app.

• Open the Settings app.

• Scroll down and select the Gmail tab (or tab of your preferred third-party email app).

• Select “Default Mail App.”

• Make sure Gmail is selected, not Mail.

How to set Chrome as your iPhone’s default web browsing app.

• Open the Settings app.

• Scroll down and select the Chrome tab.

• Select “Default Browser App.”

• Make sure Gmail is selected as your default mail.

Feel Safer at Home: How to Choose Smart Home Security Gadgets

You want to buy a smart home system. It’s clear as you are reading this. Manufacturers are constantly pushing the bar higher by offering new and upgraded devices. In 2020, Home Security Systems are powerful, all-encompassing, and impressive.

Smart home security includes a broad range of gadgets, from doorbells and cameras to sensors and smoke alarms. The choice may bewilder a customer. You may not know what you need to make your home smarter and safer. Moreover, does it make sense to throw an insane sum of money on a whole package system?

A modern home security system gives you more control over your property than a traditional one. An app on your phone will allow you to check the situation at home whenever you want. If a sensor is triggered, you’ll get a notification and a video clip of any suspicious activity taking place. Also, the app allows a homeowner to arm and disarm the system remotely.

The choice of devices depends on the characteristics of your living place and your personal needs. You can use this checklist to define the vulnerable areas in your house/apartment and decide on the necessary security gadgets.

However, some devices are a must. Here’s a list of products you’d better have to keep an eye on your property, so you aren’t surprised by a break-in or water leak.

Ring Video Doorbell

When it comes to smart home security, you probably consider how to keep people out and how to let your family and visitors in. With a video doorbell, you’ll always know who or what is at your door, even when you are away. And since 34% of burglars sneak into a house right through the front door, the video doorbell is not just “nice to have” but “a must-have” for protection.

Ring video doorbells are compatible with both iOS and Android devices. They use Wi-Fi to connect to the app on your phone and provide users with a live view of the front door.

Ring currently has four models available on the market. More upgraded doorbells are equipped with a wide-angle lens. The camera records in 1080p resolution. Also, it has good night vision. Its two-way audio is loud and clear.

The Ring Video Doorbell and Ring Video Doorbell 2 are battery-operated.  That means that you don’t have to hardwire anything. Easy installation is always a great plus. Still, they can be hardwired if you want to.

Google Nest Cam IQ Indoor

You may be surprised that many residential burglaries and home invasions occur in the middle of the day. They happen between the hours of 09:30-11:30 and 14:00-15:00, when parents are at work and children are in school. Therefore, more and more people invest in security systems to protect their homes when they are away. And an indoor camera is one of the first lines of defense.

Nest cam IQ comes with great high-tech features in a sleek-designed package. Whether you want to stop strangers from creeping through your house or just watch after your kids, this gadget will help you.

Nest Cam IQ has a strong processor so that it can differentiate people from things. Moreover, it recognizes faces. 1080p recording with 4K image sensor support creates super sight.

Thanks to a powerful microphone, it can scare away the burglar. And due to noise reduction and echo cancellation, you can hear them well.

Perhaps, the only drawback of Nest Cam IQ is its price – $299.

Smart Alarm

Smart alarms are simple but important security accessories. The “alarm part” of a home security system is actually a single-faceted device that alerts police when someone accesses your home without permission.

Disarming modern alarm devices is a difficult task for burglars. But it’s easy for homeowners to connect the devices with the emergency services.

Smart alarms are not solely for break-ins. The motion detection system also includes sensors. A fire alarm is an indispensable gadget. No matter how careful you use electric gadgets, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Also, your home security system can detect carbon monoxide leaks, freezes, and even potential floods. When a problem is detected, the device instantly informs the relevant emergency service and gets help to your house as quickly as possible.

Home Monitoring Kit

Rutgers School of Criminal Justice found out that an alarm system is a valuable tool for crime-fighting. They conducted a comprehensive study of five years of statistics. Researchers detected a link between burglary reduction and an increase in alarms systems.

While some studies showed that most burglars avoid alarm systems, this is the first study to prove that security systems actually decrease the crime rate.

There’re two types of monitoring your home security system. Professional monitoring is a more traditional option. In this case, an expert at a monitoring center watches after your home 24/7. Your property is guarded when you are on the job or away on vacation.

If you pay for pro monitoring, the system will be set up to alert the security company’s center when an alarm is triggered. You will be contacted to make sure everything is OK, and the appropriate authorities are alerted if necessary.

With the help of modern smart devices, you can control, automate, and monitor your home on your own. Many people go for self-monitoring these days because it’s free. Are you ready to spend time checking live feeds and responding to alarm notifications?

You’ll be able to check on the status of your system from a computer or an app on your phone. If unexpected entry or motion is detected, the alarm system will send you an e-mail or text notification. You will decide on the next steps: to go home to check the situation, to call a family member or neighbor, or contact the police or another appropriate service.

Home automation resolves your safety and security concerns, offering many smart gadgets to guard your home and your family, both when you are there and when you are away. You may find the price of some products too high. But the peace of mind is priceless.

Roku’s Tiny Soundbar Is the Perfect Cheap Upgrade for Your TV

Roku just announced the Streambar, a tiny compact soundbar that’s just 14 inches in length and weighs 2.4 pounds. It’s essentially a smaller version of the Roku Smart Soundbar, which was released last year and costs $180. The Streambar has a built 4K HDR streaming player that supports Dolby Audio, which is equivalent to the Roku’s $50 Streaming Stick+. This means that in addition to improving your TV’s sound, it also has the power to turn your “dumb” TV into a “smart” TV that’s able to stream apps like Netflix, HBO Max and Peacock (the latter of which Roku just rolled out this week).

The Streambar is a 2.0-channel soundbar that comes with four 1.9-inch full range drivers. It doesn’t have quite the power or the soundstage of Roku’s larger Smart Soundbar, which is also a 2.0-channel soundbar, but it has four 2.5-inch full range drivers. Like its larger sibling, the Streambar has HDMI Arc and optical connections, so it plugs into your TV via a single cable, so installation is super simple. The Streambar is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, and will be gaining support for Apple’s HomeKit and AirPlay 2 later this fall. The Streambar also comes with Roku’s popular Voice Remote.

roku streambar

Roku

The other neat thing is that Streambar is compatible the Roku’s Wireless Speakers and Wireless subwoofer — you can sync them together so that you get a full sound system. This is great for people who already have Roku’s other audio products, or for people who might want to upgrade to a more immersive sound system down the road.

The Roku Streambar is available for preorder right now and it’s expected to hit shelves starting in mid-October.

Additionally, Roku made two other big announcements alongside the Streambar.

First, it announced that the Roku Channel is getting a free app for iOS and Android. The Roku Channel comes built into every Roku streaming device and gives people access to free movies and shows. The fact that it’s getting a free app means that anybody can access its free movies and shows — no Roku streaming device needed.

And second, Roku announced a new updated model of its flagship Roku Ultra streaming device. It costs $100, which is the same price as the previous generation model, and comes with improved Wi-Fi performance, support Dolby Vision HDR (a first for a Roku streaming player) and an HDMI cable in the box (another first for a Roku streaming player). The new Roku Ultra is available for pre-order now, with it expected to hit shelves starting in mid-October.

5 Games We Can’t Wait to Play on Next Gen Consoles

next gen games

Courtesy

The next generation of consoles is almost here. The Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5 are available for preorder now, though you’ll be hard-pressed to get your name on list before individual batches sell out. While some games (cough cough Halo Infinite) are getting delayed from day one launches, there is still plenty to look forward to on these upcoming systems. Here are five games we are excited to play.

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

Demon’s Souls

This PlayStation 5-exclusive launch title resurrects the now decade-old FromSoftware classic that spawned an entire genre for a new generation of players. And running at 1440p60, getting killed over and over will look better than ever before.

Cyberpunk 2077

This long-awaited sci-fi shooter isn’t strictly a next-gen game.  After a series of delays, it’s slated to come out for current consoles this November. But, unlike some other current-gen games, Cyberpunk 2077 will offer a free upgrade for the next-gen version to anyone who buys the current-gen version at launch.

Halo Infinite

Initially the star of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X launch lineup, Halo Infinite has unfortunately been delayed into next year, but with any luck that just means it’ll be a more polished game.  Better yet, the open-world take on the classic franchise will be available as part of the Xbox Game Pass on day one. So while you can pre-order, you could just sign up for one of the best deals in gaming instead

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank has been a stable showcase for new Sony hardware for over a decade, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is no exception. If you’ve never played, it might be easy to see the game’s cartoony aesthetic and dismiss it as kid stuff, but these chaotic-third person shooters are reliably a blast for anyone with a sense of fun who needs a break from “realism” now and then, and Rift Apart looks no different.

Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon: Zero Dawn was a huge hit among PlayStation 4 owners and critics alike for its beautiful and unusual open-world setting that meshed a pre-historic vibe with herds of killer robots. Forbidden West looks set to carry on the tradition with even better graphics as a cornerstone show-piece for the PlayStation 5’s processing prowess.

Amazon claims that it will only record video when it’s flying, as when it’s docked the camera is blocked. The Ring Always Home Cam will be $249.

This App Lets You Completely Customize Your iPhone’s Home Screen

iOS 14 has opened Pandora’s box for iPhone users because, for the first time, widgets allow them to customize how their Home Screens look. No longer are apps confined to the size and layout constraints of the classic app gridlock. Instead, widgets allow apps to take up more real estate on the Home screen and display more information. It’s great and fun (and a feature that Android devices have been able to do for years).

iOS 14 has given rise to a number of third-party apps that can help you get creative with these widgets. Widgetly is a free app that lets you customize how your widgets and apps look, and it even allows you replace app icons with a photo of something else. For example, you can change the Instagram icon to be a photo of your dog or of your favorite actor, like Keanu Reeves. The options are pretty much limitless as you can customize any-sized widget.

Widgetly — along with a few other third-party apps, like Widgetsmith and WidgetPack — can also help you create different themes for your Home screen. Like if you want your background and every app to be a different character from Batman the cartoon, like @jacque_bischoff, who posted this photo on Twitter.

Many of these third-party apps provide template that can help you customize widgets and the overall layout your Home screen. But beware: widget and Home screen customization can be very time intensive, but it could also help your iPhone feel personal to you than ever before. If you’re looking for inspiration, go to #ios14homescreen on Twitter and you’ll see how everywhere is customizing their Home screens.

The Best Standing Desks for the Home or Office

When it comes to clocking time on your rear, the results are in — and rife with gloom. Prolonged sitting has been linked to an increased risk of multiple maladies, including diabetes, heart disease, anxiety, depression — even early death. If all of this sounds bleak, take heart (and a stand) in this: Spending more time on your feet can boost job performance, work engagement and mental well-being.

However, standing for long periods can take its own toll on your comfort and health, so the secret is frequently changing positions throughout the day. Fortunately, many companies now offer sit-stand desks for the office or home. Wondering which one best fits your style and needs? We’ve weeded through today’s selection to save you time and stress. Here’s our list of the best standing desks — each selected for their design, ergonomics and ability to quickly toggle between sitting and standing positions.

    Humanscale Float Table

    Best Standing Desk

In terms of functionality and aesthetics, Humanscale’s Float Table flies above the competition. First off, it’s a statement piece — the simple, sleek lines ooze modern minimalism and tranquility. But perhaps the desk’s best feature is its innovative counterbalance system, allowing you to lift and lower the top with ease using the weight-adjustment handle — no cumbersome cranks or noisy electric motors necessary. And while some counterbalance tables require a bulky pedestal base, Float does not, allowing more space and freedom of movement below. Need a large work surface? No problem. Float comes in a range of widths up to 72 inches. And don’t be fooled by its pretty, clean look—this height adjustable desk is anything but dainty: its steel and aluminum construction can support up to a whopping 130 pounds. For optimal ergonomics, you can add on the brand’s other beloved accessories like their height- and angle-adjustable keyboard trays and articulating monitor arms.

    Fully Jarvis Standing Desk

    Best Electric Standing Desk

For years critics and consumers have praised the Jarvis Standing Desk, and for good reason: its stability, design and breadth of customization options make it a worthy investment for the home or office. While some desks offer a limited height range, Jarvis is available in Mid and Extended Height Ranges, the latter of which boasts an impressive 25.5-inch of adjustability—allowing anyone up to 6’7” to stand and work with ease. For the top, you have many options: heat-, scratch- and water-resistant powder-coated MDF; Greenguard high-pressure laminate; or Moso bamboo, harvested from sustainable forests. Both the rectangle and contour shapes are available in multiple sizes, and you can add a laptop and/or monitor arms to accommodate a variety of display setups. Still crave more? You can customize further by adding a powered grommet, anti-fatigue mat, LED desk lamp and more. (Warning: While the base price looks attractive, it quickly climbs as you add more features.)

It features dual electric motors and a touchscreen controller to raise the desk from 29 to 47 inches, with infinite stops along the way. (You can also save up to three height settings.) Some cool features include dual USB charging ports at 2.4 amps to quickly—and simultaneously—charge your devices, as well as a pull-out storage drawer to stash supplies. Available in white and black, the desk’s power-coated tempered glass offers a sleek, polished look as well as supreme strength and durability. Humanscale QuickStand Eco

Best Standing Desk Converter (Post and Base Style)

If the Humanscale Float Table is out of your price range — or you’d rather keep your current desk — a sleek alternative is the brand’s QuickStand Eco. As with most standing desk converters, the Eco is designed to go on top of your current desk. A big perk here is its vertical, minimalist design and integrated cable management, which cuts down clutter and retains more desktop space than its bulkier competitors. Another bonus: no cumbersome knobs or levers. The Eco’s innovative Continuous Force self-locking mechanism makes switching from sitting to standing a snap—simply slide the work surface up or down. The Eco is available in three configurations: laptop, single monitor or dual monitor. And as the name suggests, it’s as environmentally friendly as it is beautiful: The Eco is free of any Red List chemicals and is certified with a Declare label from The International Living Future Institute.
