If your skin is typically dry—that is, if it’s persistently parched and not just a seasonal or circumstantial dehydration—then you need to use products that factor for such sensitivity. Your skin’s outermost layer—its defensive one—retains less moisture, and your natural oil production could be lesser than your oily or otherwise “normal” friends. Dry skin is more susceptible to cracking, roughness, aging, and even infection.

How to Take Care of Your Dry Skin

Just because your skin sometimes gets dry doesn’t mean you have textbook dry skin. It could be a temporary condition attributed to the cold, parched winter air, or even bodily dehydration. People who actually have dry skin are dealing with it on a daily basis: Their glands produce less oil, so they experience the same dry symptoms as the rest of us, but under less exceptional circumstances.

If you notice that others are glossy at the forehead and cheeks while you rarely shine at all — and that your skin feels rough and sometimes looks tired — then you probably have genetically dry skin, and need to adjust (or build) your skincare regimen accordingly. Below, we’ve outlined how to do exactly that, with additional advice from board-certified dermatologist Jennifer S. Kitchin of Harrison, NY.

How to Know if You Have Dry Skin

Kitchin says that dry skin is characterized by dullness, flaking, itching, cracking and oftentimes progressed signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. It’s caused by a lack of moisture in the upper layer of the skin, be it from a hot shower or a lack of oil production at a microscopic level.

Common Problems With Dry Skin

Dry skin looks duller than more hydrated skin types (normal, oily and combination). That’s because there’s less oil in the corneous layer of the skin — the outermost of the layers, which locks on moisture. Accordingly, dry skin tends to be itchier, gets irritated more easily and is often more sensitive to everyday skincare products and razor blades. Kitchin says dry skin also makes you more vulnerable to infections, too, since this defensive moisture barrier is compromised — and it can also show signs of aging faster.

“All people are susceptible to developing dry skin, and it is typically dependent on the environment, temperature, humidity levels, length of showers and baths, and use (or no use) of protective moisturizers,” Kitchin says. “There are some specific skin conditions that can lead to the development of dry itchy patches on the skin, which are not considered to be ‘dry skin.’” This includes psoriasis and eczema. If you aren’t certain about your own condition and how to improve, Kitchin recommends seeing a board-certified dermatologist.

The Best Morning Routine for Dry Skin

Because dry skin is more sensitive than other types, it’s best to keep your regimen simple. Kitchin tells her dry skinned patients to use gentle, plain, unscented cleansers and moisturizers.

“The most important takeaway message is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.”

For cleansers, you should opt for something as simple as Dove. It hydrates while it cleanses, and won’t dry out the skin like many harsher options. “These types of products can help protect your skin barrier and limit the loss of your natural skin oils while showering,” she says. “Most soaps contain surfactants which, while great at cleansing our skin, also bind to our vital skin oils, thus removing them from the skin. That ‘squeaky clean’ feeling after you use your favorite soap is a sign that too many oils have been removed from your skin.”

As for moisturizers, Kitchin recommends something thick and gentle They are extra dense and defensive, and they lack ingredients that might irritate your skin. “Ingredients to look for include mineral oil, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerine and lanolin,” Kitchin says. “Although many people prefer a lighter lotion, they typically do not moisturize as effectively as a thicker cream. If you insist on using a lighter lotion, then that can be your daytime go-to product, and you can use the thicker cream at bedtime.”

She adds that it is important to limit your showers to 35 minutes maximum, and to use nothing higher than lukewarm water. “Pat dry, to prevent wiping away residual skin oils and moisture, and then apply your apply your moisturizer within 35 minutes of showering,” she says. And don’t be sparse with it: “The most important takeaway message is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.”

The Best Nighttime Routine for Dry Skin

All the same rules apply — if you shower at night, limit it to 35 minutes, keep the water warm but not hot and use gentle cleansers on face and body. Or just do the same while cleansing your face over the sink. Then hydrate within 35 minutes. You can layer a nourishing serum under the moisturizer if you want to hydrate all the layers of your skin, but it’s that outermost layer that needs the most love, and a thick moisturizer is essential while you sleep, since it works with your body’s restorative cycle to help you look rested and youthful in the morning. It will also work harder to prevent dryness while you sleep, and will better defend from outside bacteria and germs.

Things to Avoid if You Have Dry Skin

“People with dry skin should avoid products that are rich in perfumes, dyes and preservatives,” Kitchin says. “Although all of those sweet smelling lotions are fun to use, they’re not ideal for effective moisturizing, and they can even lead to irritation, which will worsen your already dry skin.”

The “Jumbo” Royal Oak Watch By Audemars Piguet

Some change is good. Especially in the case of the Royal Oak watch by Audemars Piguet, which has sort of been the same thing for years now.

The latest model, called the The Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin, isn’t exactly a radical shift from the tried-and-tested Royal Oak mold, but it does introduce some very interesting tweaks to the iconic watch that make it a tad bit more intriguing.

Diving In Style With the Panerai Submersible Carbotech Watch

We recently reviewed a collaboration between Panerai and famed explorer Mike Horn. Its most notable include an eco-friendly manufacturing process that uses scrap aviation-grade titanium. Moreover, even the watch strap is sourced from recycled PET, which earns major brownie points for nature in our book. This is a first for the company since most luxury watch brands normally use new material. Moving on to another model in its lineup, we have the Panerai Submersible Carbotech and it’s a looker.

Most high-end watches opt to use precious metals, but some experiment with innovative materials. The gorgeous matte finish of the Carbotech sports a mesmerizing pattern that’s supposedly unique for each example. It’s easy to mistake the new H. Moser & Cie Swiss Alp Watch Concept Black for a smartwatch. From afar, it looks like an Apple Watch. However, upon closer inspection, you’ll immediately notice that it has a rather odd design. We are talking about the absence of a dial along with the minute and hour hands. We’ve seen avant-garde models from various watchmakers, but this one certainly caught our attention. Ryan Martin singlehandedly makes some of the best jeans available for his brand W.H. Ranch Dungarees. The Kansas City-based outfit offers 12 historical-reproduction styles made from start to finish by Martin, a sixth-generation professional sewer and pattern maker. And though his jeans list for $375, Martin’s uncompromising attention for detail has garnered him loyal following a two-year wait list.

To keep up with demand, Martin launched a ready-to-wear collection utilizing a Los Angeles factory to produce jeans to exacting 1950s specifications. The flagship ready-to-wear jean is the R1901 Ryder, a mid-rise style with a slim box and vintage straight leg. It is cut from 12.5-ounce Nihon Menpu left-hand twill denim and features deadstock 10-ounce Texan drill cloth pocket bags. The style has triple-needle chain stitched seams, vintage replica half-selvedge side seams and a standard 35-inch inseam. Also, the leather pulp patch and raw copper rivets and buttons are all made in the USA.

The R1901 Ryder jeans retail for $240 and are available in a wide range of waist sizes. They’re not inexpensive, but the materials are top-tier and the construction methods are hard to beat. And while they’re not made solely by Martin, they make the W.H. Ranch Dungaree style accessible immediately for a fair price — it’s hard to argue with that.

Ulysse Nardin Freak X Wristwatch

Normally, when we’re talking about luxury watches, what comes to mind are contemporary designs that are hardly exciting. However, something suddenly comes along that dares break the mold. For example, timepieces from brands such as Richard Mille, Urwerk, and more sport radical form factors and complex movements. Nevertheless, some border on the unorthodox that it becomes too unsightly for conventional collectors. Thankfully, the Ulysse Nardin Freak X Watch achieves a pleasant mix of a classic form factor alongside something different.

The new model borrows some aesthetics from its 2001 predecessor. Just like its namesake, the wristwatch flaunts two oversized hands that actually blend perfectly with the design. Unlike the original, this one features a traditional crown. The older iterations rely on a unique method to wind the watch and make adjustments. The user needs to twist the outer ring of the transparent case back to manually wind the spring. Likewise, the same can be done for the bezel to set the time.

Unlike the previous versions of the series, the Ulysse Nardin Freak X now uses a different movement. According to sources, the new model runs on the Caliber UN-230, which is now self-winding and offers a 72-hour power reserve. It’s supposedly a combination of the UN-250 and UN-118 movements. The titanium case measures 43mm and comes in a variety of materials. There are two Carbonium variants, one in titanium, and another is 5N rose gold. This is the first one to carry a lower price point that all of its predecessors. Owning one starts at $21,000 and goes up to $30,000 depending on the variation.

The Best Facial Cleansers for Guys with Oily Skin

You really shouldn’t wash your face more than twice a day. Though, when you have oily skin, that feels like an impossible scenario. You constantly want to cleanse, because you constantly need to.

Two things: First, you can train your skin to produce less oil…by washing it less. The same can be done on your scalp, by shampooing less. Really. It takes some patience for the first few weeks, but the skin does respond instinctively. If you keep removing oil, its intuition is to produce more. So you need to wash it without completely drying it out. Which leads to the second point: You should get a cleanser that is specially formulated to help oily skin. It will rinse away excess dirt and grim, unclog pores, and keep your complexion from looking like a reflection.

Here are six of our favorites for the task. They each take their own approach to the matter, but they all set you up for a more manageable experience of living with oily skin.

(Just follow them with the right oil-balancing toner and hydrating or mattifying moisturizer to further prevent shine.)

Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser

Kaolin clay seems like an odd ingredient for a cleanser, until you remember it’s also the foundation of many deep-cleaning facial masks. Jack Black combines the oil-absorbing kingpin with volcanic ash to help scrub dead cells from the surface of your skin; then, glycolic acid dissolves additional dead cells for the freshest, brightest reflection your mirror has seen. And, go figure: You can also leave the product on your face for five minutes as a deep-cleaning mask.

SiO Cleansing Discs

Swab a cleansing disc across your face for a 2-in-1 refresh: They’re loaded with glycolic and lactic acids to gently exfoliate the skin and rid pores of excess buildup. They’re alcohol free, and leave your skin hydrated and healthy despite the heavy-duty clean. It’s a soy-enriched formula that also balances the skin’s complexion, and it’s certified non-comedogenic, meaning it’s been proven to *not* clog the pores. (Believe it or not, some cleansing products out there cause more harm than good—this is not one of them.)

Vichy Pureté Thermale Foaming Cleansing Cream

Another foaming cleanser that is gentle enough for sensitive skin, though this one goes on like a hydrating cream. Vichy is known for its makeup-removing powers, so you can imagine how effective it is on dirt.
