Buying A Dress Watch? 5 Things to Consider

On the hunt for a dress watch? They come in all shapes and sizes, and can easily make or break an outfit. We talked about things that would help you find the devices that would make you look your best. They’d also be the easiest to wear.

Case Size

When shopping for a dress watch, you want something expensive looking. One of the things that makes timepieces look expensive is their size. You need a watch that has a case of over 1.65 inches (42 mm). Thankfully, manufacturers are aware of the effect size has. That’s why so many timepieces are on the larger side.

Even if you have smaller wrists, you’d be able to wear them. Case size has nothing to do with comfort. This doesn’t mean you should go overboard, though.

Along with face size, something that elevates dress watches is the weight. In general, the more weight a unit has, the more premium it would feel. This is as it means more high-end materials are in-place.

Strap

They come with all sorts of straps. You should make note of how sensitive your skin is. If you have reactions to many things, a watch with a hypoallergenic band is a must.

Many dress pieces come with leather bands. Although they look classy, they collect sweat. If you’re someone who sweats more than a regular person, snagging such a watch would not be ideal.

Something neat that some brands let you do is interchange straps on watches. This is great as you’ll regularly be able to switch how they look. If your taste varies a lot, interchanging their straps would keep you satisfied.

Brand

To make a statement, you should get a timepiece from an acclaimed brand. In the world of watch collecting, Swiss names reign supreme. You could snag a Rolex or Omega, turning the most heads. But their devices cost as much as a kidney.

Wrist Watch Pro has a list of some notable Swiss brands. You’ll easily be able to find more sensibly priced ones, like Tag Heuer or Tissot. To a regular individual, they’d see a shiny Swiss watch on your wrist. They wouldn’t be able to guess that it doesn’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Movement

Do you have places to be? If your dress watch needs to keep you on top of your schedule, you should probably purchase a quartz one. They have fewer parts, so they are the most reliable. They are battery-powered too, so the room for error is reduced. When it comes to quartz pieces, you can choose from Japanese or Swiss types. The latter is more intricate, so they’re the best.

If accuracy doesn’t matter and you just want a unit to blow everyone’s socks off, you’d get an automatic one with an exposed front. Automatic watches move on their own, having many gears in motion. Their exposed fronts would let you view their insides at work. They’d have jewels too, letting their gears run smoother. You’d catch glimpses of them through the cut-outs.

You should probably know that you don’t have to tend to quartz pieces unless you’re changing their battery. Automatic watches work with you, so they have to be worn continuously or their gears would be affected.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to dress watches, they can make or break an outfit. There are so many to choose from. Considering the points we mentioned would help you make the best purchase. You need to make note of their size. The bigger they are, the more premium they would look. This is true of their weight as well. You’ll especially make people gawk at your wrist if you pick a Swiss unit up. They don’t all cost as much as a small car, as mentioned. You can easily find more sensibly priced ones.

Also, make note of the type of person you are. If you regularly must be on top of things, a quartz watch would be needed. You wouldn’t have to worry about power reserves.

So, what do you think? Keep these tips in mind when you’re looking for a great dress watch to buy. You can’t go wrong.

The Best Hair Clippers for Men

For the DIY-ers and penny-pinching among us, a solid set of hair clippers is a must. Cutting your own hair can shave off some serious dollars, to your barber’s chagrin. But giving yourself a haircut isn’t easy and takes some practice. You’ll need a healthy amount of hand-eye coordination and possibly even a friend who’s willing to finish off the back of your head. There’s some risk involved.

Now that we’ve weeded out the unwilling, let’s talk to the undeterred. You’ll need some steady hands, sheer patience and the right tools. You might be tempted to go with a beard trimmer. Don’t. They look similar, but beard trimmers are built specifically for shorter hair and finer details. Beard trimmers are great for getting sharp lineup and getting really close to the skin. It’s what barbers use to get the baby hairs at your neckline.

Hair clippers, on the other hand, are wider and have longer blades which make it ideal for cutting longer hairs. You can use them to get a buzz cut, or a five o’ clock shadow, but not a skin-smooth cut. They run the gamut, from Good clippers are powerful but

Whether you just want to buzz it all off, clean up the sides or, likely, something in-between, these are some of the best we recommend.

The Magic Clip is what the pros use. When they’re building up their chops and even after they’ve been certified, barbers often cite this as their go-to. The build is solid and doesn’t feel plasticky, but that doesn’t mean it’s heavy. At just 10 ounces, your arms won’t be fatigued by the time you’re done. It’s easy to maneuver, too, thanks to the lithium-ion battery with a run-time of about 90 minutes. But, you can also plug it in for unlimited run time. It comes with eight attachment guides from an 1/8 of an inch to 1 inch and includes a styling comb, a brush and blade oil to keep it running smoothly.

The Step-Up

If you’re looking to take your haircut game to the next level, get the Andis Master Cordless Clipper. A 90-minute run time may not sound like a lot, but because the powerful rotary motor cuts at 7200 strokes per minutes, you won’t need it. It’ll cut through the thickest hair like butter and require less passes to do it. But if you happen to need more time sculpting your crown, it charges in just one hour. The adjustable carbon-coated blades can be zero-gapped for a super-close cut and it’s housed in an aluminum body so it’ll likely be the last set of clippers you’ll need.

This clipper gets top marks from a lot of customers. Like, a lot. On Amazon, it has over 13,000 ratings and nearly a 4.5 star average. That’s all thanks to the easy-to-read color-coordinated comb guides which span from a 1/8 of an inch to 1 inch, cordless capabilities and easy clean-up. At a continuous run time of about 60 minutes, the battery doesn’t last as long as some other options (and you’ll have to wait up to 15 hours to charge it fully). But, it does allow you to use it while it’s plugged in.

Bevel Trimmer

While you don’t really want to use a beard trimmer to cut your hair, that really depends on the haircut you’re going for. Bevel’s trimmer is ideal for getting precise lines and smooth fades, whether that’s your beard or your head. The blades are easily adjustable and don’t require a screwdriver, like some other options. If you’re super meticulous (or just really slow), the built-in battery can run for forever (about four hours). And, the handle will stay cool all the way through.

The New Uniqlo x JW Anderson Collection Is Here and I Need It All

models wearing clothes

Courtesy Uniqlo

Being entrenched in all things fashion and style, I don’t buy as much as you’d think. There’s so much clothing out there that I’d rather wait for my ideal version of something to come across before I hand over my credit card or firstborn (whichever one gets me the jacket). I look at clothes like a couch — I’m not just gonna buy one on the fly. It has to fit into the apartment, it has to go with all the other furniture, it has to last. And it’s a burden to get rid of if I change my mind. So I’m picky. Rarely do I impulse buy anything. But there is an exception, and that exception is Uniqlo’s ongoing collaboration with JW Anderson.

The latest project between the affordable basics brand and the Irish fashion designer has arrived and it’s completely great. It’s a tour of Jonathan Anderson’s personal closet and balances traditional British and Irish fabrics with modern cuts and lounge-ready fits. You’ll find chunky donegal sweaters, a luscious duffle coat in glen plaid (the best plaid), Anderson’s signature mixed pattern shirts and more. One of the standouts, which is already being packed up and shipped to me, is what they’re calling a souffle yarn half-zip sweater with matching pants. Like the name implies, it’s decadent.

As riche as the collection seems, it’s still Uniqlo. So you’ll get the JW Anderson label with a Uniqlo price tag. You can watch the designer talk about the collection below if you want to learn more, but you might not want to spend more time than that because the collection is sure to sell quick.

V-Neck Makes Sense. But Why Is This Called a ‘Crew Neck’?

Welcome to Further Details, a recurring column where we investigate what purpose an oft-overlooked product element actually serves. This week: the odd name given to conventional sweatshirts.

Some things cannot be explained. UFOs, Godfather Part 3, these — unsolved mysteries, we may never know the true answers to in our lifetimes. If that’s stressing you out, be comforted by the fact that most things indeed can be explained, even if they don’t make much sense at the outset.

Take for instance, the crew neck. You’ve seen it on every kind of knit pullover. It’s not hard to understand it as a fashion concept, but the name itself doesn’t make much sense, especially when you take its angular sibling, the V-neck. Thankfully, this sartorial head-scratcher falls within the realm of explainable things.

Like many fashion origins, the crew neck originates from the world of athletics. It gets its name from the types of sweaters worn by rowers in the early 1900s. The oarsmen were often referred to as ‘the crew’. In the United States, the sport is commonly known as ‘crew’ and the nickname eventually became attached to the garment as well. The earliest known use of the term crew neck dates back to 1939, though the neck style had been in use well before.

The neck on these sweaters were circular with no collar attached and, generally, fit close to the wearer’s neck. In time the crew neck became associated with t-shirts as well. Today, crew necks most often feature an attached piece of ribbing in order to finish the neck and keep its shape when being pulled over the wearer’s head.

loc rowers

Library of Congress

This is not to be confused with a boat neck, which is often seen on breton striped shirts and sweaters, originally donned by French seafarers. This type of neck is also collarless, but is distinguished by its wider opening which extends outward to the wearer’s shoulders.

Today, the crew neck isn’t limited to the decks of an eight. You’ll find it everywhere from cashmere sweaters to plain undershirts and even puffer vests. Likely, you’re part of the crew already.

We Found Your New Favorite Pant

Pants are a foundational part of anyone’s wardrobe. Sure, jeans are great — as are chinos, corduroys and sweats. They each have their moment and time to shine. But if ever there was a category-bending, jack-of-all-trades in the world of pants, it would be lululemon’s Bowline Pant 30″ Utilitech Pant. We use this term too often, but they truly are the goldilocks of pants — a perfect middle ground of comfort and durability. If that’s not enough to convince you that you need more than one pair in your wardrobe, read on below.

talking points lululemon pants

Lululemon

1.

Comfort Meets Durability: When it comes to comfort, there is no doubt that four-way stretch reigns supreme. But many four-way stretch pants lack in the durability department. But that’s certainly not the case here. The Bowline Pant Utilitech 30″ balances stretch and abrasion-resistance for the perfect middle ground.

2.

All-New Utilitech Material: The Bowline Pant Utilitech 30″ makes use of a brand new material from lululemon called Utilitech. It was developed specifically to be abrasion-resistant, keep the comfort of four-way stretch and still feel natural to the touch. That last part is key, because many four-way stretch materials can feel overly synthetic — but the Bowline Pant Utilitech 30″ bucks the trend.

3.

Streamlined Fit: In terms of cut and fit, the Bowline Pant Utilitech 30″ makes use of lululemon’s ABC tech, which allows for a broad range of motion and plenty of room to breath. It also features a streamlined fit, which works for a varied set of body sizes. If you’re looking for a go-to pant to refresh your wardrobe this fall, look no further.

Looking for a Chore Coat? Just Get This

Skip the heavy lifting and go straight to what’s best. Just Get This is our no-nonsense guide to the gear you need, now.

Like most classics, the chore coat was born from utility. In a venn diagram, it’s the overlap between minimalist and function. That’s why the chore coat has been around for over a century. And even at its old age, it doesn’t look passé.

We’ve rapped at length about the immaculate design of the chore coat. We’ve even culled together the best of the best. It’s the framework for other classic outerwear, which is part of the reason there are so many options on the market. But if you just want to get straight to the one you should get, let it be Portuguese Flannel’s Labura Chore Coat.

No Frills Except the Ones You Actually Need

Portuguese Flannel sticks to the playbook. The Labura’s got a point collar, three patch pockets, plus an interior pocket. It doesn’t mess with a slim silhouette, either, and it’s long enough to cover your ass.

Better Ingredients, Better Chore Coat

Speaking of covering your ass, it’s built in Portugal in a multi-generational factory from solid materials. You’ll find beautiful corozo buttons and a super soft brushed flannel (the brand’s specialty, if you couldn’t tell from its name). Sure, the original French chore coats were made of burly moleskin, but this midweight flannel is better-suited for year-round wear.

The Spice of Life, Variety

That said, it’s not limited to flannel. The coat comes in a variety of different fabrics from plush corduroy to hardy denim to lightweight ripstop to warm tweed and, yes, moleskin if you want.

Good Value

We wouldn’t say the Labura Coat is cheap. But it’s also not expensive. At around a Benjamin and a half, it’s a step-up from most mass-produced options without leaping into the top-tier price bracket. It’s the sweet spot between solid investment and diminishing returns.

12 Great Chinos to Replace Your Jeans

Chinos have been around for over 170 years. That’s longer than <a class="body-link" href="http://<a%20href=" data-vars-ga-outbound-link="http://blue jeans. Originally known as khakis, a Hindustani reference to the sandy-colored cotton twill fabric, chinos as a term began to take hold during the Spanish-American War in the late 1800s. It’s derived from the Spanish word for ‘Chinese’ and is a shortened version of chinos pantalones or ‘Chinese pants’.

They originally featured slanted or on-seam side pockets, belt loops and a wide fit, and were introduced to militaries around the world before making their way to civilian society. Today every brand has a version of its own, from the ubiquitous and affordable to the esoteric.

When we’re not wearing jeans, we’re wearing chinos. The understudy to the classic blue jean may get more shine than actual understudies and may even outdo the star on occasion. It’s about as versatile and certainly as classic, so here are our picks for the best chinos out there right now.

The Perfect Kit for Fall Wet Weather Adventures

Fall is a special time of year. As the temperature drops, so do the leaves — but not before putting on a spectacular show of color. On the east coast of the U.S. it’s fairly common to travel just to observe this show, whether for a weekend or a quick day-trip — those who do are known affectionately as “leaf peepers.” New England’s leaf peeping display is well worth the effort to observe, though take note: While it’s possible to hit the jackpot and have perfect weather for your journey, it’s much more common to experience the wet weather the region is known for. Having the right kit that’s tailor-made for dealing with just such conditions will go a long way in making your trip that much more enjoyable.

This Pant Is as Versatile as It Is Stylish

What if there was a pant that is as comfortable as it is durable? And what if we told you it offered four-way stretch, a streamlined fit and a dollop of abrasion resistance? Such a pant exists — the lululemon Bowline Utilitech 30″ pant. Whether you’re headed out to the farmers market, working from home or exploring your backyard, the Bowline Utilitech 30″ can handle it all. It makes use of a brand new material from lululemon called Utiliech. It was developed specifically to be abrasion-resistant, keep the comfort of four-way stretch and still feel natural to the touch. On the comfort front, the Bowline Utilitech 30″ makes use of lululemon’s ABC tech and a streamlined fit, which allows for a broad range of motion and plenty of room for varied body sizes. If you’re looking for a go-to pant to refresh your wardrobe this fall, look no further.

Bear Grylls collaborates with Luminox once again for the Survival ECO watch

There’s no other name that’s as well known when it comes to survival tips than Bear Grylls. Edward Michael Grylls is a British former SAS serviceman and survival instructor who teaches folk like us how not to die in the great outdoors. Therefore, Luminox is partnering with him once more to market the Survival ECO. Not only does this timepiece boast outstanding durability, but its purchase also contributes to efforts to save the environment.

We have been featuring cool items in the past making use of waste materials. We have some shoes from Adidas, there’s a Bluetooth speaker from a small startup and a high-end watch collection from Oris. Now, Luminox is jumping aboard the eco-friendly train with its latest tie-in with Bear Grylls. The Swiss-made Survival ECO boasts a construction that uses 100% ocean-bound plastic.

The watchmaker is crafting the 45mm case, the uni-directional rotating bezel, and even the strap from the collected ocean-bound plastics. The deep blue dial flaunts a wave pattern while the outer ring in a lighter shade. Other notable elements include the Bear Grylls Logo in Super-LumiNova that replaces the 10 o’clock hour marker. Another is the “Never Give Up” quote just above the 6 o’clock marker and the date window in place of the 3 o’clock marker.

The Luminox x Bear Grylls Survival ECO also features the brand’s “Always Visible” technology. You can find these tritium gas tubes inserts in green on the second hand, hour hand, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and 9 o’clock mark. Then the 12 o’clock mark on both the dial and bezel sport orange tritium gas tube inserts. Finally, running the show is a Ronda 515 movement. Only 1,500 pieces will be made available.

Uniqlo’s Affordable Face Masks Are Finally Here

The unofficial and undisputed go-to brand for better basics has officially launched its face masks. Uniqlo’s got every gap filled when it comes to stylish goods, but almost nine months into the global pandemic, had yet to bring a face mask to its digital shelves in America. While everyone else scrambled and put out their own face masks to market, Uniqlo took some more time to develop its own and it’s finally here.

The AIRism Face Mask has a sophisticated triple layer design that offers protection in the midst of the summer swelter. The first layer — closest to your face — uses its lauded AIRism fabric, which is moisture-wicking and breathable. The anti-odor fabric also has a super soft texture. The mask includes a built-in filter as its middle layer, and the outer layer is a breathable AIRism mesh fabric that blocks 90 percent of UV rays.

The masks are offered in three different sizes and several colors, and cost $15 for a pack of three. Sizes are colors are selling quickly, so if you want a set of affordable masks, don’t wait.

The Best Everyday Face Masks Available Now

best mask refresh gear patrol lead full

Joe Tornatzky

Editor’s Note: This is an updating list, with new brands making cloth and fabric face masks every day.

Hospitals are fighting a battle. There’s a dangerous shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as surgical masks and N95 masks which healthcare workers desperately need in the fight against coronavirus. These medical-grade masks help shield these vital workers from bacteria and viruses which can be transmitted through the air, via moisture droplets in which the novel coronavirus survives.

Unfortunately, droves of non-health workers are buying these masks for themselves in bulk. This panic buying further depletes the shortage, ultimately forcing healthcare workers to re-use PPEs and even use alternatives like scarves and bandanas, neither of which the CDC recommends. This leads to a greater risk of infection and puts health workers at a major disadvantage when confronting coronavirus patients daily. If these vital workers get sick, they’re unable to work and possibly get their patients and coworkers sick.

In a recent article published on Refinery29, Shannon Sovndal, MD, an EMS medical director based in Boulder, Colorado recommend that everyone wear a face mask. Infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has also discussed the possibility of advising the general public to wear masks daily. This has the potential to make the current shortage of medical-grade face masks much worse.

Apparel brands like Everlane, Buck Mason and Los Angeles Apparel have heard the call and have been driven to help, pivoting their factories and sewers to produce masks for purchase and for donating to hospitals. Though many of these masks are not CDC-approved, there have been studies that suggest these are better than nothing at all, with common household materials being up to 96 percent effective in filtering out harmful particulates.

These non-medical grade masks provide some protection to the general public while helping to allocate the sorely-needed CDC-approved surgical and N95 face masks to first responders and medical workers. Though plenty of home sewers and even healthcare professionals have provided DIY instructions for making your own masks at home, if you have the means to afford to buy a mask, here are some brands making and donating masks.

The CDC updates its guidelines and recommendations on masks regularly. To read the latest guidelines, click here.

These Pants Seamlessly Blend Style and Comfort

While you may think of lululemon first for its high-performance workout clothing and relaxed “athleisure” wear, one of the brand’s best products is decidedly more formal than that, at least in terms of appearance. But that’s just it — the ABC Pant perfectly blends lululemon’s performance DNA with a style that’s fit for everything from the office to a night out. It’s crafted from Warpstreme, the brand’s wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying, four-way stretch miracle material. It’s about as close as you can get to wearing your favorite sweatpants without actually wearing your favorite sweatpants. But beyond that, it’s the finer details that set the ABC Pant apart, like the reflective hit on the flip-up cuff or the hidden rear zipper pocket. Try a pair for yourself and you won’t want to wear anything else.

Keen’s Exclusive Jerry Garcia Collection Benefits Voter Engagement

keen x garcia

Keen

Keen partnered with the Jerry Garcia Family to create a limited-edition set of masks, sandals and bags. Each product features Garcia’s artwork — either “New York at Night” or “Banyan Tree” — displayed prominently on fabric panels. When Garcia was not touring with the Grateful Dead or the Jerry Garcia Band, he created paintings, drawings, etchings and other works of art.

One percent of the proceeds of sales go to HeadCount, a non-profit that works to promote voter participation. “HeadCount was started back in 2004 with the goal of getting every Deadhead and music fan registered to vote,” HeadCount executive director Andy Bernstein said in a statement. “So the spirit of Jerry Garcia is literally in our souls. Now, he will be under our soles too. We are very grateful to Keen and the Jerry Garcia Family for supporting our work.”

The collection’s masks come in a two pack so you can wear one and wash one, and its footwear come in boxes decorated with either Garcia’s “Fish” art or the inlay from his “Tiger” guitar. The Keen x Garcia collection ranges from $20 to $185 and is available now exclusively at Keen.

“Jerry Garcia’s music helped define a generation’s values of togetherness and community. Keen was founded with similar values of bringing people together and doing the right thing,” Keen chief brand officer Erik Burbank said in a statement. “It’s hard to imagine a better fitting or more exciting partnership. We’re on a mission to encourage people to take action and foster more love in the world. We see this as an alliance of two originals coming together with shared values to make a difference. We want fans to Vote Love in their everyday actions.”
