Heading Outdoors? The Yamaha Adventure Pro Is the Only Guide You Need

It’s a tricky thing, consulting a map while roaring through the backcountry on an ATV or side-by-side. Somewhere between dropping the thing 500 yards ago and squinting at the tiny print to see if you’re anywhere near the trail home, you might find yourself thinking: don’t we have technology for this?

Thanks to Yamaha, you do. Its Adventure Pro powered by Magellan is the ultimate all-terrain GPS. Who wouldn’t want a 7-inch tablet with color LCD display that syncs with Yamaha side-by-sides and ATVs? And it’s not just GPS navigation — it’s got real-time diagnostics and doubles as a camera for humble-bragging your exploits at the end of a long weekend of riding. That’s just the beginning. The Adventure Pro is truly built for adventure, and it’s got more features than you can count. All of which will help you explore further with more capability and confidence than ever before. Portable, versatile, fun — you and your riding buddies will never leave home again without it.

1. Rugged assistant: The Yamaha Adventure Pro powered by Magellan runs its 7-inch color LCD display using Android OS. If you’re a rider, you know this is not enough information. You’ll want to know: how does it stand up against a beating on the trail? Thanks to a ruggedized exterior that’s water and dustproof, just as well as you do.

2. Share your riding exploits: If an ATV roars through the forest and nobody is around to appreciate it, did it even make a sound? With the Adventure Pro’s Twitter and Facebook integration, plus a front and back camera, you can keep all your jealous friends and family up to date on your latest weekend adventures. Its timing mode is Yamaha-exclusive. And because it shares your tracks and courses with other Adventure Pro users, you can turn a humble brag into next weekend’s adventure with friends.

3. Endless features: It’s Bluetooth and wi-fi enabled, to start. Beyond GPS mapping and navigation — it doesn’t need a connection for turn-by-turn navigation, by the way — it has features for online adventure planning, with more than 115,000 pre-loaded trails and waypoints, plus real-time diagnostics readouts including speed. With the one-touch backtrack feature, it’ll even get you home in time for dinner.

An Adventure to New York’s Hidden Fishing Village

The words explore and adventure often call to mind mountaineers scaling ridgelines in the Himalayas or wetsuit-clad surfers chasing some far-off wave. But they don’t have to. In fact, sometimes the adventures most worth taking, and the areas most worth exploring, are close to home. Such is the case with City Island — a New England-style fishing hamlet nestled on a 1.5-mile-long stretch of land in the Long Island Sound in New York City.

Likewise, when many think of Danner’s iconic leather boots, they may picture a bearded hiker stepping off the Appalachian Trail after a seven-month thru-hike, or a professional photographer traversing a rocky coastline to get the perfect shot. And while Danner’s high-quality leather boots can certainly take on the most rugged of excursions, they’re equally well-suited to taking on your next micro-adventure.

Danner’s historic headquarters of Portland, Oregon, home to the brand since the 1930s, is not dissimilar to City Island — both places were built on the backs of heavy industry.

While Charles Danner first made his boots to serve Oregon’s booming logging trade, we can’t help but imagine that his early boots would have found a home in the shipbuilding industry on City Island as well. Today, the shipbuilding industry has all but abandoned City Island, but its influence is still vibrantly apparent. Art installations of ships built there can be seen in storefronts and on the sidewalks throughout. And, sailmakers still craft and repair sails in the island’s historic buildings — trading canvas for advanced sailcloth materials infused with carbon fiber stringers.

These sails carry some parallels to Danner’s boots: They’re made with the same passion and craftsmanship today that they were in the 1930s — with updated materials to improve performance. The boots feel at home here, on the weathered floors and sleepy streets — a stark contrast to the hubbub and monolithic steel of Manhattan. Few would say this is a part of New York City if they were dropped here blindfolded — and that’s what makes it worth exploring.

Danner Vertigo 917

The Vertigo 917 is tailor-made for urban exploration. The boot, which comes in both men’s and women’s versions, has a sleek and streamlined silhouette that is perfect for pairing with just about any outfit. The Vertigo also features a waterproof Gore-Tex liner alongside the Danner-exclusive Vibram 917 outsole with XS Trek rubber, providing copious amounts of traction on a variety of surfaces. The contrasting red laces are there for a pop of color while the Ortholite footbed and nylon shank offer endless comfort. This boot will fit in anywhere.

Danner Mountain Pass

The Mountain Pass, available in both men’s and women’s models, is similar in appearance to Danner’s Mountain Light, yet comes 25 percent lighter and with unmatched comfort right out of the box. But don’t let its featherweight stature fool you, the Mountain Pass is still brawny and durable. In fact, before selecting a full-grain leather upper for the boot, Danner puts it through six different tests to ensure its quality. Add in a Vibram sole, fiberglass shank and Gore-Tex liner and the Mountain Pass is a surefire recipe for good vibes all day.

Danner Feather Light Revival

The Feather Light Revival is Danner’s latest addition to the Portland Select collection. The boot is still made by hand, the same way it was when it was first released in the 1980s. It’s similar to the Light Revival, and features the same Gore-Tex liner, but has a five-inch height instead of six. The boot features a stitchdown construction, so you can have it resoled if you ever manage to wear through the Vibram Kletterlift outsole. The aesthetic is timeless and classic, and is just as at home on a jagged mountain trail as it is paired with a cuffed pair of high-quality jeans.

These Futuristic Swedish Gloves are Rooted in Heritage

Hestra has been focused on the singular pursuit of making the world’s finest gloves since 1936. Still located in the eponymous southern Swedish town, Hestra has been family-owned and run for four generations by the Magnusson family. With the harsh Scandinavian winters and a deep cultural love for winter sports, it is no wonder that Hestra’s gloves are tried and true, ready to take on the elements be it on the slopes or out hiking.

Hestra doesn’t make gloves like any other brand. The brand manufactures its gloves in its own factories, personally sourcing all the leather, fabric, wool and other materials. This ensures control over the production chain and with it, high levels of quality. Several of Hestra’s styles are handmade by some of the most experienced glove cutters in Europe. These expert glove cutters include members of the Magnusson family. Anton and Niklas Magnusson are part of the fourth generation and are master certified glove cutters in the French classical tradition — the only two in Scandinavia. Anton recently took the reigns as the Managing Director of Hestra, cutting a path for a new generation of leadership. While it does have a long lineage of producing high-quality gloves in time-honored methods, Hestra continues to grow and improve, embracing the future.

This year, Hestra is introducing its first-ever snowboard-centric glove. The Freeride CZone is going to be exclusively available in the USA later this winter. For the design and development of the glove, Hestra got together with Chris Rogers of Vail Ski and Ride School. Working with Rogers, Hestra was able to create a glove that does everything a snowboarder needs. The Freeride CZone incorporates Hestra’s iconic Fall Line design into a snowboard-specific combination of a CZone waterproof breathable membrane, smartwatch-compatible cuff, wear-resistant internal seams and snowboard-friendly flex zones. The lengthy feature list culminates in both a mitten and three-finger model.

With all the updates, Hestra still knows how to make a classic glove with all the details that have led to the brand’s success. Case in point, the Wakayama Glove. Since its launch, it has quickly become a Hestra staple. The retro-inspired glove is a true crossover that can fit on your hand from the slopes to the lodge to the city. It’s named after Hestra’s long-time Japanese distributor and is perfectly simple. The Wakayama is made from cowhide with wool terry lining and features a simple paracord wrist adjustment. This year, Hestra has made the Wakayama and a few other key styles available in chrome-free, dye-free Ecocuir leather, so the gloves can keep you warm and help out the planet a bit too. With a firm foot in the rich heritage of the brand and an eye for innovation, Hestra will be helping us ward off the cold and enjoy snowy weather for generations to come.

For a Fine Custom Rolex, Look No Further than Artisans De Genève

Artisans de Genève is anything but your everyday watch company. This Geneva-based watchmaking workshop offers an exclusive service of watch modification for private customers and on-demand only. Its modifications are made exclusively upon request in its workshops by independent and highly skilled craftsmen. The company specializes in fulfilling its client’s needs: in six to eight weeks, modifications are made with each part carefully planned, modified and reassembled following a very specific and complex technical sheet. Each of its interventions is made with the utmost respect for the timepiece, as well as with the DNA of the watchmaking house it comes from. We took a look at one of Artisans de Genève’s recent works for acclaimed footballer Andrea Pirlo. These are three of the key modifications made to Andrea Pirlo’s Rolex Submariner 114060.

1. Movement Revealed: To skeletonize Andrea Pirlo’sSubmariner, Artisans de Genève embarked on two years of research and development, and 37 of the most passionate craftsmen. Eventually, each component was entirely dismounted, cut and beveled by hand. The result offers a complete new insight of the mythic 3130 caliber.

2. Dial and Bezel Upgrade: Andrea Pirlo chose a forged carbon bezel, a lightweight and wear-resistant material that gives his timepiece a modern allure. It also features an openwork dial with pure lines that reveal each detail of the skeleton movement.

3. One of a Kind Case: The case features an exclusive combination of know-how with polished chamfers, satin-brushed strip and sandblasted lugs. All this gives it a delicate and distinctive contrast and shine to the timepiece.

Blancpain Air Command

Modeled on a vintage pilot’s watch from the 1950s that was never serially produced, the Blancpain Air Command is a masterpiece of midcentury watch design — or rather, the modern interpretation thereof. Featuring a flyback chronograph movement, rotating countdown bezel and a tachymeter scale used to compute speed and distance, the Air Command is a classic pilot’s watch. But it’s the use of modern materials, such as Super-LumiNova and sapphire crystals, that bring it firmly into the 21st century.

Google Pixel 3a

In a field of increasingly four-figure phones, Google’s Pixel 3a is notable not just for its screamingly modest $400 price tag. This comfortably competent, pleasantly plastic midrange phone also includes a stunning, flagship worthy camera that punches way above its weight. The result? A phone that’s not only a terrific value, but that challenges the very notion that a top-notch camera is a premium feature, and argues that it is instead an absolute necessity.

Display: 5.6-inch, OLED, 1080 x 2220 pixels
Body: Plastic
Headphone Jack: Yessir
Price: $400

Four Roses Small Batch Select

The new Four Roses Small Batch Select is a blend of six recipes (different combinations of mashbills and yeast strains), each aged for at least six years, including the four recipes that showed up in Master Distiller Brent Elliot’s one-off, the 130th Anniversary Small Batch, which took home the title of “World’s Best Bourbon” in the 2019 World Whiskies Awards.

Small Batch Select is Elliot through and through; since taking up his role, he’s been releasing blends with some of the lesser-known recipes, like those made with their more herbal yeast. Also of note: Small Batch Select is the most premium Four Roses to ever see wide release. It’s the highest-priced booze of the permanent collection and, in a nod to current trends, it weighs in at the highest proof. And the company elected to skip the chill-filtration process, giving the whiskey a thicker, more oily mouthfeel. Previously, you could only find non-chill-filtered Four Roses at this proof if you were able to get your hands on the annually released Four Roses Limited Editions.

All Natural: Non-chill-filtered
Proof: 104
Serve: Neat, with a few drops of water
Price: $55

Fujifilm X-T30

The idea of a “travel camera” is a confusing one in 2019. Just about everyone who’s traveling already has one on their phone, and odds are, it’s pretty good. So what makes a good travel camera, and why is this one so well-suited for the task? Outrageously high image quality is a must (gotta justify using it over your phone, after all) and the X-T30 has that in spades. That’s in part thanks to the excellent sensor, but it’s Fujifilm’s suite of lenses — especially its fast and compact prime lenses — that make the biggest difference. No portrait mode in the world can get close to the pure optical perfection of Fuji’s 35mm f/1.4.

Sensor Size: 26.1 megapixels
ISO Range: 160 – 12,800
Max Continuous Shooting: 8 frames per second
Price: $899 (body)

Jeep Gladiator

Americans love pickup trucks, and Americans love Jeep Wranglers. So rather than attempt to build a new truck from the ground up, Jeep’s product planners and engineers chose to keep it simple, taking the four-door Wrangler — specifically, the all-new, more-refined JL generation — stretching out the wheelbase and affixing a metal box to the end of it. You can snag a well-equipped one for around $45,000; considering you’re scoring an off-roader, a five-seat family car, a convertible and a pickup truck in one for that price, it’s hard to see that as anything but the deal of the year.

Powertrain: 3.6-liter V6 or 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6; six-speed manual transmission; four-wheel-drive
Horsepower: 285 (gasoline); 260 (diesel
Torque: 260 (gasoline), 440 (diesel)

Sunday

It can be tempting to write Sunday off as an organic lawn-care subscription box, but the company’s considered, data-driven take on lawn care presents a genuinely new way to care for a backyard. When a customer signs up for Sunday, they receive a kit to take a soil sample. From there, Sunday tests the contents of the soil to determine what vital nutrients might be missing and needed to better promote the health of the grass. Customers then receive products — which are comprised of materials like organic food waste from grocery stores and seaweed — that are meant to fill in the gaps. For $150 a year, the startup sends customers regular intervals of completely bespoke natural lawn-care products via mail.

Consistent: Three shipments a year
Location sensitive: Uses GPS data to assess sunlight deficiencies

What To Do About Your Holiday Jet Lag

If you’re someone who flies constantly, you already know that clocking miles in the sky can wreak havoc on your body and your mind. From drying out your skin to losing a day at your destination to jet lag, plane travel can do a number on you. Add in the low humidity — the air in a plane cabin is three times drier than that of the Sahara desert — and the intense pressure of the altitude, and it’s a one-two punch for dehydration, which affects your cognitive functions, emotional stability and productivity. And that is besides intensifying the usual side effects of jet lag.

To counteract all this, the scientists at ERW have developed a physiologically-tailored solution to keep you hydrated and energized through a long flight: My Flight Pack. Developed with top-riders in the Tour de France, this three-step powdered hydration solution will change the way you fly. My Flight Pack is already a hit with teams from the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB who have been testing it out on players who often have to fly thousands of miles between games

And from now until December 24, you can take 20% off your order with the code gearpatrol2020 to help with your holiday travels.

We took a closer look at the three-step program to show you how it all comes together to keep you energized and ready to take on anything when you land.

1. The Pre-Flight Hydration Formula: The PREP mix is there to prepare you for the high and dry cabin. Essentially a hyper-hydrator to be taken before takeoff to get your body prepared for the coming flight.

2. The Hydrating and Calming Formula: Once you are airborne, it’s time for the second stage. With Rhodiola to lower your stress hormones and tart cherry containing natural melatonin to promote sleep, the Calming Formula makes sure your flight is smooth.

3. The Kick-Starting Wake-Up Protein Drink: Once you’ve hit the ground and need to get on with your business, the Wake-Up formula will kick you into high gear with 21g of protein, rehydrating and aiding in your recovery from the stress of traveling.

How One Photographer Finds Her Light from New Mexico to Mount Everest

Cira Crowell ended up with her first Leica — and her first camera — completely by chance. It was her late grandfather’s Leicaflex SL2. “I just randomly happened to be given the old camera off the shelf,” explains Crowell at her home outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. “That was my very first camera, and it was one of my best teachers.” That was some 25 years ago, and she hasn’t put down the Leica since, traveling the world over from Nepal and Bhutan, to Germany and Iceland, capturing images of life at the extremes.

“I decided to become a photographer because it is a way of seeing the world moment by moment,” says Crowell. That’s what she has done with her work that spans photography, new media drawings and projected animations. “For me, photography is a way of life. It’s a way of thinking. It’s a deep philosophy as well as a creative form.”

Her latest ongoing project takes her far away from New Mexico to Nepal. The project is called Envisioning Everest, and Crowell stays and trains in the New Mexico mountains to help her stay prepared for the thin air at the high altitudes of Nepal. Her photos aim to show Everest as more than just the westernized “Death Mountain” (as she calls it), but a complex place that looks different from every angle. “In its homeland,” Crowell explains, “Everest is called Chomolungma, which means Mother Goddess. It is a kind of Mother Earth — life-giving, water-giving source.”

Crowell is not new to Everest. She has trekked over 800 miles in the Himalayas from 8,000 to 18,000 feet. When we caught up with her and her dogs in New Mexico, she was preparing for another exhibition to the mountain for her project. To get ready, Crowell does interval trail running, at 8,000 feet above sea level, strapped down with her fully loaded ruck every day. Besides that, she will also hike up to 12,000 feet in elevation once a week. “I’m really acclimatized by living at this elevation, and that’s an important part of the training,” she says.

As much as an expedition to a mountain like Everest is about training, it’s also about the things you carry. Having the right gear is a crucial part of any extreme expedition. “The right gear can make a difference between being able to stay out another hour and catching the beautiful light,” says Crowell. She still uses a Leica from the SL line, albeit a modern digital one. The digital Leica SL was a dream come true for her. “I was able to use the old lenses that I loved so much,” she says about the original Leica lenses she had to shelve before the SL. “They went from being paperweights to being my favorite tools.”

When shooting, Crowell prefers black and white, capturing as she says, “the quintessential Leica look.” It’s the depth and creamy light that newcomers swoon over and professionals know as a hallmark of the best German glass out there. The Leica SL is also built to last and rugged enough to withstand the harsh conditions of the Himalayan mountains along with the vintage lenses. There is also a timeless quality to shooting in black in white that lends itself to the larger project that Crowell is working on. “By choosing black and white, I can unite the stories whether the images were taken ten years apart or with different cameras. I can unite everything for a deeper story which is about life and light. That’s what my work is about, the inner connection of light and life.”

This Is the Multi-Use Luggage Your Winter Kit Is Missing

Boot bags are not known for their style. Notoriously unattractive and unnecessarily bulky, they’re hard to stuff into overhead bins and look ridiculous stashed under your office desk. Most are decidedly less hitting-the-slopes-later, more hockey-practice-after-school.

James Poss, founder of Switch Designs, believes the boot bag can be better — transformed, even. Poss combined his passion for design and skiing in Switch, which aims to bring style and innovation to the ski luggage arena. Its premiere release is a boot bag unlike any other: Its patented design instantly converts from backpack to super-slim tote, making it easy to pack in the car, the overhead, or anywhere else you might need to stow it. Its durable 500D USA Nylon Cordura hits the sweet spot between rugged and polished.

1. Patented transformational design: With the click of one reversible buckle, the Switch boot bag transforms from backpack to tote. The tote configuration is slim and fits easily into narrow spots — a tight closet, an overpacked car, or a flight home for the holidays. The bag’s central section boasts two interior mesh pockets big enough for a 13-inch laptop or tablet, a hook for your keys and a pocket for your valuables. Once you’re all packed up, you can stuff your outer shell into the bungee straps and throw your water bottle onto one of the D-hooks. All set.

2. High-end durability: This is the kind of bag that can take being crammed into tight spaces. Its 500D USA Nylon Cordura exterior is a favorite of the military for its rugged durability and resistance to tearing. Trust us — you’ll use it for many winters. Switch also boasts a lifetime warranty so you can be sure it will never quit.

3. Rugged yet polished style: The bag is equally at home in a backcountry yurt or a private jet headed for the French Alps. Its two color options, Black and Coyote, are both classic neutrals that will pair well with any luggage you already own. Taped zippers, hardware by Fidlock and Trimmers Japan, and bark-tanned Wyoming elk leather trim round out the look.

A Look at the Dixon Nordic Tech Bomber at Verishop

Have you been shellacked by sleet, rain and snow yet this year? It’s not fun — especially when you’re caught unprepared. Verishop, a premium lifestyle destination for hand-picked everyday luxury brands, has you covered on that account: they carry a wide range of top brands picked by fashion experts, including the Dixon Nordic Tech Bomber Jacket. It’s made by Mackage, a Montreal-based brand founded by designer Eran Elfassy in 1999. This is the do-it-all winter jacket. (Elfassy and his partner, Elisa Dahan, are based in The Great White North, remember.) Here are a few of the features that make it the perfect winter bomber jacket.

1. Winter-Proof Features: You need heavy-duty outerwear to keep you warm in the depths of winter. The Dixon Nordic Tech Bomber Jacket’s got that in spades: its polyester and nylon shell, combined with 800+ fill duck down, keeps winter out while letting your body breathe; its removable hooded bib has a storm visor; and its double-entry pockets are easy to access while you’re wearing gloves. In short, you’ll never be caught out in the cold.

2. Down with Ethics: The down that keeps you toasty doesn’t need to make you feel bad. The Dixon’s quality 800+ fill duck down keeps you warm with less weight and fewer feathers — and it’s certified responsible.

3. Technical style: Let’s be honest — a bomber jacket is always going to be infinitely cooler than a parka. Don’t take that for granted this winter. And don’t miss out on a Napoleon pocket with leather welt and zipper, either. People notice such things, even when they’re freezing their butts off.

Its polyester and nylon shell sheds whatever precipitation winter throws at you, but still breathes; its duck-fill down keeps you toasty warm. Of course, no one wants to be entombed inside a stiff, oversized parka, even in the worst conditions, and the Dixon Bomber Jacket is far from it:

How One Designer Changed an Outdoorsman’s Life

Inspired by the near gravity-defying balance of mountain goats, Kai Lin set out to help people — and change the life of one adaptive rock climber. His goal: design the perfect prosthetic foot for mountain climbing, one that would let amputees reach new heights on the wall.

Lin grew up in the industrial city of Fuzhou, China, drawing his days away in his bedroom, sketching pictures into the wee hours of the night. But eventually, at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Lin shifted from illustration to industrial design. “I wanted to move beyond drawing for self-expression,” Lin says. “I wanted to work on projects that solve a very specific real-world problem, to help people.”

In his third year of studies, Lin stumbled across a video of mountain goats climbing a seemingly vertical rock face. Fascinated by how the goats’ hooves kept them balanced, Lin started designing a mountain-goat-inspired prosthetic foot, called Klippa, the Swedish word for a cliff.

In 2014, Lin’s Klippa was a finalist for the James Dyson Award. In a round of media appearances, he was introduced to Craig DeMartino who had lost his leg in a climbing accident. He was the person Klippa was designed for.

But, Lin needed more funds to build a working prototype and after graduation, was caught up in the throes of a busy day job. That’s when Arc’teryx stepped in to help, offering Lin the use of a 3D printer.

With that, Lin took to the design table, perfecting his prototype Klippa and DeMartino prepared to test it at Indian Creek, Utah. This was Lin’s favorite part of the process, it was the moment of truth when all of his work would meet the reality of the rocks. Lin told Demartino, “There might be a chance when you try out my design that it could fall off, or break.”

Right before the test climb with the Klippa, DeMartino tested another prosthetic in Mexico. “It completely blew apart. It was totally shredded. It broke in so many ways I just never saw coming. It made me realize: I don’t know that much about design,” said DeMartino. Then, just a few weeks later, he met Lin at Indian Creek to see if the Klippa would meet the same fate, or if his dream of climbing a fine finger crack again would come true. These Legendary Colognes from Montblanc Take Precise to a New Level

Montblanc’s fragrances can suit any man, with precision and depth a hallmark of all its scents — it’s easy to find one that suits you. The brand’s Legend scent has quickly worked its way into our hearts and onto the wrists of men the world over. But this scent isn’t for anybody — but rather for a particular man — the man who prefers says little but you always know is there. He is subtle, confident and assured. How does Monblanc’s Legend capture that distinctive quality? Through the precise and beautiful work of master perfumer Olivier Pescheux. Montblanc created this exquisite scent you will be longing for.

The scent of Legend simultaneously expresses strength and softness, clarity and mystery through its complex makeup. This very masculine yet subtle scent belongs to the fougère fragrance family, making its presence felt without ever becoming ostentatious. The first notes are lightly aromatic, with lavender — essential in the fougère construction — coming through along with bergamot and pineapple leaves which are clearly recognizable. The middle notes vibrate intensely. Evernyl — a molecule highly reminiscent of oakmoss — deploys its warm depth. Notes of jasmine, white cedar, pomarose, a touch of sandalwood and dry amber help round out Legend. But no fougère could ever be without coumarin, the inimitable note of the tonka bean.

Alongside the understated and refined Legend is the more rugged Explorer. Built for the man with adventure in his blood, Montblanc enlisted top perfumers Jordi Fernandez, Antoine Maisondieu and Olivier Pescheux. Each of them brought a single ingredient from around the world to give the Explorer the globe-trotting scent Montblanc was after. The scent features notes of bergamot from Italy, vetiver from Haiti and patchouli from Indonesia. Each of these ingredients is combined to produce a deep rich scent that is pleasing and apparent, yet subtle.

As with everything that Montblanc makes, style and design are essential. The Legend bottle captures a sense of masculinity, timeless design and bears all the classic Montblanc hallmarks. The curved solid shape with a flowing smoothness echoes the feel of the iconic black Montblanc Meisterstück pen. The intense black glass and metal top further add to the effect. At the stopper, three “rings” continue to capture the spirit of the Meisterstuck 149 frame — the famous guilloche brand signature. The bottle of Explorer is equally thoughtful — a weighty European-made bottle wrapped in textured leather, sporting the simple-but-iconic white Montblanc star.

If you are looking for a gift for that enigmatic charmer in your life or the global adventurer, Montblanc has the scent that will soon be his go-to.

Why The New Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Campus Is Well Worth a Trip to Kentucky

Bulleit came onto the scene in the 80s when the whiskey landscape was bleak. Armed with a 100-year old family whiskey recipe, Tom Bulleit was a trailblazer who helped change the way we drink whiskey today. But that isn’t the end of it — because Bulleit has continued to strive and thrive in the industry by constantly pushing forward. Bulleit recently opened a new Visitor Experience — a culmination of all the whiskey and knowledge of the Bulleit brand. The experience opened this summer as the 17th stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, and recently hosted the brand’s annual Frontier Fest and was capped off with a set from the band Houndmouth. But the Visitor Experience isn’t just showing off the superb bourbon, it also highlights Bulleit’s commitment to sustainability on its new campus — by making whiskey while also respecting the natural resources that make it possible. We caught up with Eboni Major, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Blender to learn more about the new Campus and Visitor Experience, what makes the perfect Bulleit cocktail and how the brand stays so consistent.

For more information on the Bulleit Distilling Co. Visitor Experience and to pre-book a tour, click here.

Q: What exactly is a “frontier whiskey”?

Eboni Major (EM): When Bulleit was started in the late 1980s, bourbon was in decline and the majority of brands looked and tasted the same with high corn content recipes. Founder Tom Bulleit broke the mold and created a bourbon with a high-rye mash bill that brought forward a bolder, spicier flavor with a smooth, clean finish that tasted great on its own and when mixed into classic cocktails. That pioneering spirit makes Bulleit a “frontier” whiskey – constantly pushing boundaries to create something new, interesting and unique.

Q: How do you keep Bulleit so consistent when it’s a living and natural process?

EM: While blending comes after maturation, blenders have a hand in the entire whiskey production process for quality control purposes. Our ownership of the liquid from start to finish helps ensure a consistent whiskey product that lives up to our rigorous quality standards and ensures the bottle of Bulleit you buy today tastes the same as the bottle you buy ten years from now.

Q: What’s your go-to Bulleit cocktail?

EM: My all-time favorite cocktail is a Bulleit Blackberry Smash because I love how the high-rye content of our whiskey stands out but doesn’t overpower the fruit in the cocktail. This summer, I experimented a bit with a Peach-Ginger Smash and it was my go-to. Recently, our bar manager at the Visitor Experience has been making me cocktails with Bulleit Bourbon and Rye mixed, which is spectacular.

Q: What’s the most exciting part of the new visitors’center?

EM: The interactive Visitor Experience is designed to provide visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at how Bulleit Bourbon is made and how Bulleit is doing things differently. One of my favorite components is the heightened whiskey tasting experience that we offer. Our whiskey tasting rooms feature immersive sensory elements in scent bulbs and a timed light-and-soundscape, created in partnership with Sonos, which really enhances the flavors that make Bulleit high-rye whiskeys so unique.

Q: How is Bulleit striving to be more sustainable?

EM: We have truly ambitious aspirations for reducing carbon emissions and waste — and improving water stewardship. We use pioneering techniques and technologies to eliminate materials from operations where possible, find agriculture uses for waste such as animal feed from byproduct, recycling and recovering waste for energy such as creating biofuel from stillage. Our facility has made a commitment to source 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030. Water conservation is also a top priority, as we depend on Kentucky’s water to create our high-quality bourbon. Water sources, destinations and flows are monitored to maintain proper water balance and water is reused multiple times throughout the cycle.
