The Feather Light Revival is Danner’s latest addition to the Portland Select collection. The boot is still made by hand, the same way it was when it was first released in the 1980s. These Futuristic Swedish Gloves are Rooted in Heritage

Hestra has been focused on the singular pursuit of making the world’s finest gloves since 1936. Still located in the eponymous southern Swedish town, Hestra has been family-owned and run for four generations by the Magnusson family. 2. Dial and Bezel Upgrade: Andrea Pirlo chose a forged carbon bezel, a lightweight and wear-resistant material that gives his timepiece a modern allure. It also features an openwork dial with pure lines that reveal each detail of the skeleton movement.

3. One of a Kind Case: The case features an exclusive combination of know-how with polished chamfers, satin-brushed strip and sandblasted lugs. All this gives it a delicate and distinctive contrast and shine to the timepiece.

Four Roses Small Batch Select

The new Four Roses Small Batch Select is a blend of six recipes (different combinations of mashbills and yeast strains), each aged for at least six years, including the four recipes that showed up in Master Distiller Brent Elliot’s one-off, the 130th Anniversary Small Batch, which took home the title of “World’s Best Bourbon” in the 2019 World Whiskies Awards.

Small Batch Select is Elliot through and through; since taking up his role, he’s been releasing blends with some of the lesser-known recipes, like those made with their more herbal yeast. Also of note: Small Batch Select is the most premium Four Roses to ever see wide release. The idea of a “travel camera” is a confusing one in 2019. Just about everyone who’s traveling already has one on their phone, and odds are, it’s pretty good. So what makes a good travel camera, and why is this one so well-suited for the task? How One Photographer Finds Her Light from New Mexico to Mount Everest

Cira Crowell ended up with her first Leica — and her first camera — completely by chance. It was her late grandfather’s Leicaflex SL2. “I just randomly happened to be given the old camera off the shelf,” explains Crowell at her home outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. “That was my very first camera, and it was one of my best teachers.” That was some 25 years ago, and she hasn’t put down the Leica since, traveling the world over from Nepal and Bhutan, to Germany and Iceland, capturing images of life at the extremes.

“I decided to become a photographer because it is a way of seeing the world moment by moment,” says Crowell. That’s what she has done with her work that spans photography, new media drawings and projected animations. “For me, photography is a way of life. It’s a way of thinking. It’s a deep philosophy as well as a creative form.”

Her latest ongoing project takes her far away from New Mexico to Nepal. The project is called Envisioning Everest, and Crowell stays and trains in the New Mexico mountains to help her stay prepared for the thin air at the high altitudes of Nepal. Her photos aim to show Everest as more than just the westernized “Death Mountain” (as she calls it), but a complex place that looks different from every angle. “In its homeland,” Crowell explains, “Everest is called Chomolungma, which means Mother Goddess. It is a kind of Mother Earth — life-giving, water-giving source.”

Crowell is not new to Everest. She has trekked over 800 miles in the Himalayas from 8,000 to 18,000 feet. When we caught up with her and her dogs in New Mexico, she was preparing for another exhibition to the mountain for her project. To get ready, Crowell does interval trail running, at 8,000 feet above sea level, strapped down with her fully loaded ruck every day. Besides that, she will also hike up to 12,000 feet in elevation once a week. “I’m really acclimatized by living at this elevation, and that’s an important part of the training,” she says.

As much as an expedition to a mountain like Everest is about training, it’s also about the things you carry. Having the right gear is a crucial part of any extreme expedition. “The right gear can make a difference between being able to stay out another hour and catching the beautiful light,” says Crowell. She still uses a Leica from the SL line, albeit a modern digital one. The digital Leica SL was a dream come true for her. “I was able to use the old lenses that I loved so much,” she says about the original Leica lenses she had to shelve before the SL. “They went from being paperweights to being my favorite tools.”

When shooting, Crowell prefers black and white, capturing as she says, “the quintessential Leica look.” It’s the depth and creamy light that newcomers swoon over and professionals know as a hallmark of the best German glass out there. The Leica SL is also built to last and rugged enough to withstand the harsh conditions of the Himalayan mountains along with the vintage lenses. There is also a timeless quality to shooting in black in white that lends itself to the larger project that Crowell is working on. “By choosing black and white, I can unite the stories whether the images were taken ten years apart or with different cameras. I can unite everything for a deeper story which is about life and light. That’s what my work is about, the inner connection of light and life.”

How One Designer Changed an Outdoorsman’s Life

Inspired by the near gravity-defying balance of mountain goats, Kai Lin set out to help people — and change the life of one adaptive rock climber. His goal: design the perfect prosthetic foot for mountain climbing, one that would let amputees reach new heights on the wall.

Lin grew up in the industrial city of Fuzhou, China, drawing his days away in his bedroom, sketching pictures into the wee hours of the night. But eventually, at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Lin shifted from illustration to industrial design. “I wanted to move beyond drawing for self-expression,” Lin says. “I wanted to work on projects that solve a very specific real-world problem, to help people.”

In his third year of studies, Lin stumbled across a video of mountain goats climbing a seemingly vertical rock face. Fascinated by how the goats’ hooves kept them balanced, Lin started designing a mountain-goat-inspired prosthetic foot, called Klippa, the Swedish word for a cliff.

In 2014, Lin’s Klippa was a finalist for the James Dyson Award. In a round of media appearances, he was introduced to Craig DeMartino who had lost his leg in a climbing accident. He was the person Klippa was designed for.

But, Lin needed more funds to build a working prototype and after graduation, was caught up in the throes of a busy day job. That’s when Arc’teryx stepped in to help, offering Lin the use of a 3D printer.

With that, Lin took to the design table, perfecting his prototype Klippa and DeMartino prepared to test it at Indian Creek, Utah. This was Lin’s favorite part of the process, it was the moment of truth when all of his work would meet the reality of the rocks. Lin told Demartino, “There might be a chance when you try out my design that it could fall off, or break.”

Right before the test climb with the Klippa, DeMartino tested another prosthetic in Mexico. “It completely blew apart. It was totally shredded. It broke in so many ways I just never saw coming. It made me realize: I don’t know that much about design,” said DeMartino. Then, just a few weeks later, he met Lin at Indian Creek to see if the Klippa would meet the same fate, or if his dream of climbing a fine finger crack again would come true.
