Today In Gear: La Sportiva’s Newly-Upgraded Trail Shoe, a Better Travel Charger for MacBooks & More

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

There are trail running shoes and then there’s the La Sportiva Bushido. A trail runner that provides the protection of a hiking shoe, it was built to eat technical mountain terrain for breakfast. La Sportiva has recently given the Bushido an upgrade that’s focused on even more comfort.

The La Sportiva Bushido II brings everything we love from the Bushido and increases the cushioning by 4mm throughout the midsole. The breathable slip-on upper wraps your foot like a sock for a secure fit, and an ergonomically improved padded tongue and stays in place thanks to gusseted construction. Traction and performance are also heightened with a FriXion XT V-Groove2 lugged outsole, which incorporates dual-compound rubber for improved wear resistance without sacrificing grip. These all-around improvements guarantee superb comfort and under-foot feel on any terrain — dry, wet and anything in between.

Fresh Deals

Bulova Accu-Swiss Murren Automatic Watch
Save 74%: Among historic brand Bulova‘s various notable collections, Accu-Swiss-branded watches contain Swiss mechanical movements and often have a retro styling. This currently deeply discounted Murren is a great example, and it is particularly handsome with that bracelet which recalls the brand’s past. It contains a Swiss automatic movement — probably a Sellita SW 200 with 38 hours of power reserve. With an easy-wearing 40mm-wide, 11mm thick steel case topped with sapphire crystal, this is a great deal for just $375, or 74% off its retail price of $1,450. — Zen Love

Vans Sneakers
Save 43%:If you’re in need of some new sneakers for the warm-weather months, head over to Zappos today. Right now, you can save up to 40 percent on a bunch of iconic styles from Vans. Choose from slip-on and lace-up styles in a range of colors — prices start at just $36. — John Zientek

Hario V60 Pour-Over Coffee Brew Set
Save 20%: Baristas will argue to the moon and back over pour-over coffee — the best grind size, the best water temperature, the best pouring pattern and other brewing dark arts. But the most consistent argument of them all is that of the brew device itself, a discussion dominated by the Kalita Wave, Chemex and Hario V60. The latter is most-prized by coffee professionals and is very, very cheap today.

The V60 is a cone-shaped brewer with a single hole in the base and grooves running down the inside. It specializes in bringing out the lighter, more floral notes you see on bags of coffee, but there is a small learning curve. Because the water you pour over it runs straight through the bed of beans and into a mug or carafe, any water that lands on the side of the brewer can run right under the filter without touching the grounds, making for a very watery cup. Specialty roaster Intelligentsia has a concise, definitive guide on the subject of V60 brewing. Plus, the V60 is also small enough to fit in a carry-on, unlike its rival Chemex brewer.

Today on Drop, the glass V60 brewer, a carafe to brew into, a scoop and 100 filters is just $16. If you want to try pour-over coffee, this is about as low an investment as you could hope for. — Will Price

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 60-Liter
Save 30%: If you’ve never heard of Patagonia’s Black Hole duffel bags, you’ve likely spotted one in an airport, foreign train station or strapped to the roof of an overlander. Patagonia built the weather-resistant and sturdy bags to last decades with a rugged TPU-laminated ripstop nylon. They also include removable backpack straps that make carrying one a breeze, even when it’s fully loaded.

The 60-liter version is arguably the most versatile size; it’s big enough to pack everything you’ll need for a weekend or a week, and it still fits into the overhead bins on planes. We’ve put this bag through its paces on all kinds of adventures, from a ski weekend in Vermont to a month-long trip to Ecuador. It’s one of the best rugged duffel bags available, and right now it’s also 30 percent off at Backcountry. — Tanner Bowden

Kryptonite Bike Lock Sale
Save $30:The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini heavy Duty Bicycle lock is under $100 today. Originally $114, you can pick up this steel shackle u-lock for $82 on Amazon. Biking around a city makes life easier, but it’s infinitely more complicated when your bike gets stolen. A hardcore bike lock is a necessity if you ride your bike and leave it outside while you run errands, grab a bite or log hours at the office. This max performance lock has a double deadbolt with a protective vinyl coating and comes with three keys. The hardened steel eliminates bolt cutters as a threat, and the small size helps to keep pros with levers away. Keep one at home, another at the office and the third on your person at all times. Pro tip: Register your five-pound lock as soon as you get it and get a secondary cable to protect your wheels.
— Meg Lappe

Philips Sonicare Electric Toothbrush
Save $40: Last year, I splurged on a Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean toothbrush. It was the best thing I bought all year.

The Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean is a weighty brush that uses vibration and water movement to shake plaque and other gross substances off your teeth and gums. The electric brush has five power levels — clean, white, sensitive, gum care and deep clean — and charges via conduction in a small glass cup that comes with it.

Beyond that, it’s the electric toothbrush that made me realize the value of electric toothbrushes. Morning and night, every brushing ends in that indescribably smooth post-dentist gum and teeth feel — a feeling nigh impossible to achieve with a manual brush.

Today on Amazon, the $200 Diamond Clean is $160. It’s worth every penny. — Will Price

Best of all, the normally $50 portable battery is only $5 right now on eBay. That’s half as expensive as a New York City lunch. Expect this deal to go fast.

Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Sleeping Bag
Save $136: Mountain Hardwear debuted the Ghost Whisperer in 2012. The ultralight down jacket that weighs 7.8 ounces was the product of a collaboration with Swiss mountaineer Ueli Steck, who was an advocate for the fast-and-light approach to mountaineering. Despite its lightness, the jacket is windproof, water-resistant and warm. These same characteristics are present in the Ghost Whisperer Sleeping Bag, which Mountain Hardwear released last year in 20- and 40-degree versions. The bags are stuffed with water-resistant Q.Shield 900-fill down and feature super-light Whisperer exterior fabric, cinching mummy-style hoods and specially-designed no-snag zippers.

The 40-degree Ghost Whisperer sleeping bag, which is currently available at Mountain Steals with a 27 percent discount — that’s $136 off — is the lighter of the two and the perfect sleeping bag for warm summer nights. — Tanner Bowden

The trimmer typically goes for $100, but thanks to a special Amazon deal, you can get yours today for just $60.

Acaia Pearl Coffee Scale
Save $49: The reason pour-over coffee is seen as the purest form of coffee brewing isn’t that it’s always the best, but because it’s really damn hard to do well. Every required step — heat water, weigh beans, grind beans, bloom grinds and pour — demands an array of micro-decisions that have a huge impact. What’s peak extraction temperature? How many pours is best? What’s the ideal grind size? It’s a balance of science and skill, and there are few tools better suited for it than Acaia’s Pearl scale.

The Pearl provides 20-millisecond response times and accuracy down to .1 grams. Because it shows both time and weight during the brew process, you’re able to adjust bloom time, water volume used and total brew duration more easily. And if you don’t like taking notes or can’t remember your exact recipe, the Pearl tracks all your brews — time, temperature and weight — via Bluetooth connection to your phone.

Today on Ebay, the Pearl is 24 percent off — good for a $49 savings. Don’t forget a kettle. — Will Price

Lodge Cast-Iron Camp Oven
Save $24: Lodge’s deep-set camp oven is 13 pounds of heat-insulating cast iron. Legs allow coals to heat it from the base, a handle makes for easier movement around the fire and a tight-fitting lid keeps the outdoors out of your meal. Unlike most modern cast-iron cookware, it is not a precious thing. Today on Amazon, pick up the 5-quart size — plenty big to serve stew for four to six people — at an all-time low price of $41. What should you cook in it? Here’s a good place to start. — Will Price

Anker Smartphone Charging Accessories

Julbo Cham Aviator Sunglasses
Save $50: Originally released in 1972, Julbo’s Cham Sunglasses are the direct result of the exploits of a nearly unknown mountain climber. His name was Yannick Seigneur, and he was the first person to ascend Makalu, the fifth-tallest mountain in the world by its West Pillar Route, among other feats. He also helped Julbo, a decades-old leader in mountain eye protection, test and refine eyewear. The Cham Sunglasses are a direct result of that collaboration.

In recent years, Julbo revived the Cham from its archives. Leather eye shields and nose pieces aren’t used commonly on expeditions today, but they do lend themselves to nostalgic mountain style. Right now, they’re 30 percent off at The Drop. — Tanner Bowden

Discounted Sneakers

Nike, Adidas, Reebok and New Balance are just a few of the brands you’ll find in the complete sale, and depending on what size you wear, you might find the perfect new kicks for as little as $30.
— Andy Frakes

Victorinox Fibrox Kitchen Knives
Save 25%: Ultra-cheap kitchen knives are a crapshoot — some are great values, others aren’t worth considering. Generally speaking, it’s a category rife with Chromium-rich knives that are shiny, totally resistant to water damage but chip and dull easily. From our testing, the best of the lot is Victorinox’s collection of Fibrox-handled knives — all of which are on sale on Drop today.

Of the thirteen discounted knives, the chef’s knife gets the most press. Recommended by Cook’s Illustrated, it’s tough, comes with a less-cumbersome handle than other frugal options and takes well to honing steel. The knife usually runs about $45, but can be had for $32 on Drop. — Will Price

Jegs Performance Tools
Save up to 33%: Committing to the “at-home mechanic” lifestyle isn’t an all or nothing deal. You can take it in steps and phases. Are you sticking to basic maintenance? You probably won’t need more than a decent wrench and socket set. Are you looking to do an engine swap? Well, that requires some more heavy-duty appliances. But, no matter how deep into the automotive DIY life you’re looking to go, there’s a big sale on Jegs performance tools today that’ll have you covered in some capacity. — Bryan Campbell

Fitbit Sale
Save 20%: Right now, you can save up to 20 percent off a variety of Fitbit trackers ranging from the entry-level Fitbit Charge 3 to the stat-heavy Versa and Ionic. All three come in a variety of color options. All three make great last minute gifts for Mother’s Day — which is this Sunday. Whether you’re looking to start counting your steps or need a way to send text message alerts to your cheer squad during your next marathon, one of these Fitbits will work. — Meg Lappe

Leatherman Skeletool
Save 20%: Leatherman’s best-selling Wave is one helluva a multi-tool. It has spring-action scissors, two knives, a saw and a ruler … not to mention 13 other tools you can read about here. But let’s face it. Most people don’t need that level of hardware. And that’s precisely why Leatherman offers other minimalist multi-tools like Skeletool.

The Skeletool is small, light and it only features things you’ll actually use — like a bottle opener and needle-nose pliers. The real kicker? It’s on sale, and you can pick one up at its cheapest price ever.

Rarely does a piece of gear come along that can replace a whole range of other necessities. But that’s exactly what the Shovel from EST Gear can do if you bring it on a trip that involves hiking, camping, overlanding or trail maintenance. That’s because this tactically-inclined shovel is actually more than a dozen tools in one package — shovel, saw, axe, knife, spear, bottle opener, fire starter, wire-cutter, trowel, hex wrench set, nail puller, pick, ruler, hook, screwdriver, whistle compass and rope cutter. And small-item storage inside the hollow handle piece is waterproof to boot.

The EST Shovel is lightweight (2.5lbs) and made to last a lifetime with components forged in 420 high-carbon steel and aircraft-grade aluminum alloy. The well-appointed tool is a packable and impressively useful addition to any adventure that lies ahead of you. And for the next month, the EST Shovel is half-off on Indiegogo; a great value at its usual price of $120, you can get it during the month of May for only $60.

Today In Gear: Aether’s Versatile New Motorcycle Jacket, What to Know Before Buying a Grill & More

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Spring is touring season. But the varying weather patterns and temperatures also present plenty of unpredictable conditions that can change quickly. So if you’re about to embark on that long-anticipated motorcycle adventure, you’ll need a jacket that can breathe well, shield you from the elements and keep you protected if anything should happen. In the stylish and minimalist new Divide Motorcycle Jacket, Aether has gone ahead and made exactly that.

Made using GORE-TEX Pro fabric and fully-sealed seams, the Divide Jacket is both abrasion-resistant and waterproof. It’s also surprisingly breathable with pit zips and zippered back vents to keep air flowing on warm days. A double layer of fabric at the shoulders and outer sleeves helps with protection in essential areas, and that security is taken one step further with CE-rated D3O protective armor at the elbows, shoulders, back and chest. For the ultimate in comfort and versatility, these soft, flexible pads are all removable to ensure this sturdy jacket can stay on your shoulders even after you turn off the bike and call it a day.

Clarks Desert Boots
Save 30%:Few shoes have the kind of pedigree assigned to the Clarks Desert Boot — a simple suede chukka inspired by the crepe-soled boots worn by British officers in World War II. Sold by Clarks since the early 50s, the boots later became a favorite of style icons like Steve McQueen and Bob Dylan. Today, it’s the brand’s best-selling shoe, beloved for its unique combination of comfort, durability and polish. And, right now, you can score a pair in taupe suede for 30 percent off the normal asking price ($40 savings). — Jack Seemer

Breville Barista Touch
Save 37%: Breville’s collection of espresso machines strives to offer a machine fit for every level of coffee nerd. Today on Amazon, its most frugal touchscreen model is at an all-time low price.

The Barista Touch, which usually runs $1,000 or more, is outfitted with a built-in grinder, automatic dose control, a milk frothing wand and a touchscreen that allows you to customize and save drink profiles. It also uses Breville’s ThermoJet heating system, which primes the machine for shot pulling in three seconds or less.

It is worth noting that this machine doesn’t have an auto-tamp function, a vital and often misunderstood step in the espresso making process (ChefSteps does a good job explaining how to tamp properly). — Will Price

Timex MkI Field Watch
Save 38%: The Timex MkI, modeled after a military reference from the Timex catalog, is light, inexpensive, handsome, and perfect for the outdoors. Right now, you can grab this black version of the MkI for just $59, a 38% savings off the list price of $95. — Oren Hartov

Vasque Clarion ’88 Hiking Boot
Save 25%: It used to be that only self-proclaimed “outdoorsy folks” with a deep knowledge of vintage gear could spot the value in a battered pair of Bean Boots or a well-worn Patagonia fleece at thrift stores. Now it seems as though everyone is into retro outdoor gear, whether the aim is to wear it ironically in the field or make a style statement in the streets. Recently though, the brands have caught onto the nostalgia, and are now digging into product archives to make the old new again.

Some of it, like The North Face’s Rage ’92 collection, aims for style. Others products integrate decades of technical innovations into dated silhouettes to make items that work as well as they look. Vasque’s Clarion ’88 hiking boot is one such example; the boot first debuted over 30 years ago, but Vasque brought it back last year with a durable waterproof upper and Vibram rubber outsole that make it a reliable model for trail use to this day. It’s on sale at REI for 25 percent off right now, along with a full range of other models from brands like Merrel, Keen, Salomon and more. — Tanner Bowden

Raen Sunglasses
Save 50%: Today at Nordstrom, you can save 50 percent on some excellent sunglasses from the California-based brand Raen. Typically these sturdy, high-quality shades would run you upwards of $140 per pair, but thanks to this sale you can grab some before beach season hits for much, much less.

Patagonia Nine Trails Backpack
Save 55%: While some hiking backpacks cram as many functions into as few liters as possible, others opt for the opposite tack: achieve utility through minimalism. This was precisely what Patagonia strove for in its Nine Trails packs, which launched last spring, and the company (as usual) landed its mark.

Instead of multiple compartments and various access points, the Nine Trails backpack has one spacious main compartment that’s accessed through a large U-shaped zipper. On the exterior are multiple stretchy sleeve-style pockets for storing items that need to be accessed routinely on the trail, like extra layers, water bottles and snacks. That’s essentially it, and the backpack is a success because of that simplicity (it’s one of our favorite daypacks for hiking). The bag isn’t without a couple of extras though — there are small zippered stash pockets inside, on the top and on the hipbelt, and a hydration sleeve with a port for the hose.

Compared to other hiking bags in Patagonia’s line, the Nine Trails is still new, but as long as you don’t mind last season’s colors — Classic Red and Sprouted Green — you can find the bag on sale for up to 55 percent off at Backcountry in both 20- and 28-liter capacities. — Tanner Bowden

Today In Gear: Kershaw’s Small-but-Mighty Folding Knife, How to Shop Vintage Marantz Hi-Fi Gear & More

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

A pocket knife should be discrete, easily deployed and sturdy enough for any daily task. By that definition, the new Kershaw Launch 10 stands head and shoulders above many others.

At 5.2 inches open (3.2 inches closed), the Launch 10 ticks off the “tiny” box. It offers a push-button on the anodized aluminum handle to open the hawkbill-style blade quickly; the blade is made from CPM 154 steel, with angular planes on both the blade spine and handle. The curved shape of the blade and positioning of the razor-sharp tip provide superb pull-cutting capabilities. This makes it especially handy for a multitude of daily tasks, from opening boxes to cutting twine or loose threads, giving you a knife that’s deserving of everyday-carry status and useful to a fault.

Note: Owning and carrying an automatic knife isn’t legal in every state due to the Federal Switchblade Act. As such, Kershaw automatic knives are only sold through authorized Kershaw dealers.

Coway Mighty Air Purifier
Save $68: On the cusp of allergy season, a timely deal: the Coway Mighty air purifier is marked down $68 at Amazon.

Recommended by everyone from the Wirecutter to Home Air Guides, the Mighty boasts a four-stage filtration system, washable pre-filter and “eco mode.” It’s not ideal for big rooms — Coway recommends placing it in spaces no bigger than 361 square feet — but it’s the right choice for most bedrooms and city apartments. The Mighty is already significantly less expensive than the competition, and today its discounted below last year’s Prime Day price. — Will Price

Cheap Outdoor Furniture
Save 25-75%: No one would blame you for prioritizing indoor furniture to outdoor furniture when filling out a home. But, with warmer months fast approaching (or already here for some states), now is the moment to get at least something on the patio, porch or balcony.

That’s where Houzz’s Mid-Season Sale comes in, with a few thousand products marked down anywhere from 25 to 75 percent off. And while there are deals in nearly every furniture category, the markdowns on outdoor dining sets and weatherproof sofas and couches are the most noteworthy. The Mid-Season Sale will run until May 12. — Will Price

Snow Peak Collapsible Umbrella
Save 40%: It’s easy to leave your umbrella at home when your only option is a three-foot-long behemoth that doesn’t fit in your work bag. But any time an afternoon thunderstorm rolls into town, you probably find yourself wishing you’d brought it — or had bought one to keep in your office as well.

That’s the real joy of a compact and lightweight umbrella: you can drop it into your briefcase, backpack or messenger bag and forget it’s even in there (until the next mid-day storm, anyway). This specific model from Snow Peak — one of our favorite brands — measures only nine inches folded, weighs just under five ounces and is designed to collapse during heavy wind gusts rather than breaking or ripping, meaning it’ll get you through the season and many more to come. Best of all, it’s on sale at Nordstrom for just $34 today — that’s savings of more than 30 percent.

On the downside, the Versa doesn’t have a built-in GPS, meaning it’s not quite as capable a fitness tracker as other smartwatches.

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Oris has highlighted environmental causes for years by promoting them alongside new editions of its popular Aquis dive watch. The Aquis line’s latest release is the Oris Aquis Date Relief which is coupled to the efforts of Ernst Bromeis, an endurance swimmer and water conservation ambassador. Bromeis and Oris have partnered for a global freshwater preservation campaign called The Blue Miracle, a series of swims that will start with an 800km swim across the world’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Baikal.

The 43.5mm timepiece is a high-performance diver that’s rated to 30 bars of water resistance and is the first-ever Aquis to offer a relief bezel. Its radially-finished slate dial is inspired by the color of a stormy sea and pairs beautifully with a red rubber strap. It’s a perfect watch to accompany Bromeis as he raises public awareness of the need to conserve our freshwater resources.

Timex Expedition Scout Watch
Save 24%: The Expedition Scout features a quartz movement, quick-set date and 50m of water resistance. Right now you can take 24% one of two versions: a black dial with a green canvas strap or a tan-colored dial with a blue fabric strap. Both watches feature Indiglo backlight technology and an inner 24-hour track for a handsome, military-inspired aesthetic. — Oren Hartov

Oxo Burr Grinder
Save $20: Walk into a coffee shop and ask any person behind the counter what you can do to make better coffee at home, and we’re willing to bet the answer will be the same: grind your own beans.

The reason: ground beans go stale quickly. The second a bean is ground, the essential oils and trapped aromatics are released and begin to fade — thus, from the moment beans are chewed up in a grinder, a flavor loss clock begins ticking.

Today on Amazon, Oxo’s excellent entry-level electric burr grinder is on sale from $100 to $80, matching its all-time low price. The Oxo grinder features 15 separate grind level settings and stainless steel burrs. It can grind 12 cups worth of coffee in 30 seconds or less. — Will Price

EMPOWERD Luci Solar Lantern
Save 52%: An inflatable camping lantern comes across as a gimmick, but MPOWERD’s Luci is a practical way to add ambiance to base camp without weighing down your backpack. The Luci has 135-lumen LED bulb that sheds enough light to illuminate the inside of a tent or the surface of a picnic table. Best of all though is that it doesn’t need batteries because it comes equipped with a solar panel that charges up during the day when artificial light isn’t needed. The Luci Color, a version of the light that emits various hues, is on sale now for just $12 thanks to a 52 percent discount. — Tanner Bowden

Bose Solo 5 TV Sound System
Save $100: The Bose Solo 5 TV sound system is a soundbar that’s ideal for small rooms and apartments. Normally $200, eBay is selling it for half that. It’s relatively small and can be placed on top of media console or mounted to the wall. If you’re having trouble hearing the dialogue from your TV’s speakers, this soundbar is a surefire way to fix that. It also has built-in Bluetooth, so you can stream music to when the TV is not in use.

Aer Travel Bags
Save 30%:If you have travel plans on the books for summer or are just in the market for a new commuter bag, head over to East Dane today. Currently, you can save 30 percent on a range of functional travel bags from Aer. Made from ballistic nylon, they cost as little as $56, so if you see a style you like, don’t wait — they’re selling quickly. — John Zientek

Butter Pat Estee Cast-Iron Skillet
Save 15%: All Butter Pat Industries hand-cast-iron skillets are produced in small batches, take a lot of time to make and are apparently the choice pan of famed Southern chef, Sean Brock. They’re smooth as hell, light enough to toss veggies in, sports pour spots that are actually useful and are among our favorite cast iron out there. But they’re also far more expensive than your average pan.

Today, Butter Pat’s best-selling 8-inch Estee skillet is on sale from $145 to $119 with code MOTHERSDAY19. This size skillet is good for a single steak, breakfast for two, cornbread and various other desserts and baking recipes. — Will Price

Orient Ray II Dive Watch
Save Over 60%: Japanese brand Orient offers some of the best value in mechanical watches. The Orient Ray II Automatic’s retail price of $335 is a pretty good value to begin with. The brand houses original works by names long cemented in design history: Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, George Nelson and more. Starting today, almost all of it is on sale.

The Herman Miller Spring Sale is the largest markdown on the company’s archival and recent work — a cool 15 percent off. Everything from the Eameses Lounge chair to Nelson’s Bubble lamps to the brand new Cosm office chair are on sale and ship for free. Happy shopping. — Will Price

Clarks Wallabees
Save 40%: Right now, you can save 40 percent on a pair of the Clarks Wallabee, a moc-toe shoe with a suede upper and an easy-wearing crepe sole.

While the Wallabee is a staple of the Clarks portfolio, it’s also the darling of a number of style experts and streetwear brands. In recent years, collaborations that riff on the Wallabee silhouette include OVO (Drake’s collective), Concepts and Supreme. Adidas Ultraboost 19 Sale
Save $55: The Adidas Ultraboost 19 is down from $180 to $126 at Jackrabbit today in the white and red color. Back in December, Adidas launched the updated model of the ever-popular Ultraboost. We reviewed the shoe here and loved it for long runs. If you’re in the market for a shoe with plush cushion and a flexible and breathable upper, this shoe is for you. While there are limited sizes available, this is the first time we’ve seen the re-designed Ultraboost 19 on sale. Pick up a pair today at Jackrabbit. — Meg Lappe

Apple Watch Series 4
Save $50: New Apple products rarely discounted, so when they do it’s exciting. Take the Apple Watch Series 4. It was released this past fall and the cheapest model on Apple’s website still costs $399 — see here. You can occasionally find the same Series 4 on Amazon for $384, but it’s selling for well below that right now. At $349, it’s the cheapest that Amazon has ever discounted the Apple Watch Series 4. (This deal only applies to the 40mm model with a black sports loop band.) |

Oliver Peoples Sunglasses
Save 30%:If you’ve been waiting for a great sale to invest in a new pair of quality sunglasses, this is your chance. East Dane is currently offering 30 percent off a range of Italian-made shades from Oliver Peoples. At the sale, you can pick up both acetate and metal framed styles from the cult-favorite LA brand for as little as $266 — but sizes are selling quickly. — John Zientek

Evergoods CPL 24 Backpack
Save $69: A good everyday backpack is simple, durable and understated, and you’ll find few better examples than the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24, which is currently $69 off at Huckberry (the best deal we’ve seen on this bag). Evergoods — a relatively young company started by an ex-Patagonia engineer and one of GORUCK’s original co-founders — makes its backpacks in small-batches at its headquarters in Bozeman, Montana.

Since the CPL 24’s debut in 2017, multiple Gear Patrol staff members have adopted it as their daily driver for getting to and from the office. That says a lot, given how many backpacks we test out for reviews and buying guides. But the CPL 24 stands out because it balances a minimal look with a full set of features; a 500D nylon shell fabric treated with a water-resistant coating, a curved back panel that’s both comfortable and breathable and a side-access laptop compartment that fits computers up to 15 inches are just a few. Plus, while the CPL 24 is the ideal around-town pack, it’s capable enough to handle an impromptu hike too (the backpack includes pass-throughs for hydration hoses on both shoulders). — Tanner Bowden

LG B8 55-Inch OLED TV (2018)
Save Over $500: The LG B8 is the company’s entry-level OLED TV, but its picture quality is just as good as the company’s higher-end model, like the LG C8. If you’re looking to get an OLED TV, this is one of the best deals we’ve seen. The deal is on a 55-inch model, which is rare because it’s a really popular-sized TV. (Most homes don’t need or can’t fit, a TV that’s larger than 55-inches.) And it’s going for a little over $1,000, which is a lot less expensive than what LG is currently selling its 55-inch LG B8 OLED TVs. | schubert c4 spark helmet motorcycle quiet

Schuberth C4 Spark Helmet
Save 53%: Riding a motorcycle is a delight for the senses, but it can grow a little weary on the ears after a while. Between the roar of the wind rushing past and the drone of the engine, it doesn’t take long for the sounds of a ride to push into the irritation zone—or even encroach on causing hearing damage.
Of course, a good helmet can help offset those potentially-deafening noises. And right now, one of the quietest helmets on the market today—the Schuberth C4 Spark Helmet—is on sale for a massive 53 percent off at RevZilla.
This sleek, compact helmet’s Direct Fiber Processing construction (it’s like carbon fiber, but with glass) means it weighs in at just a little over four pounds, but thanks to its German engineering—a process that included hours and hours of testing and aerodynamic optimization—your ears will think they’re encased in far more mass. Should the silence grow too off-putting, the Schuberth C4 Spark also comes with a speaker, microphone, and integral cell phone antenna pre-installed, as well as everything needed to plug the company’s SC1 communication system—which brings mobile phone integration, intercom functionality, and FM radio reception to the table—into the helmet. If you’ve been thinking about grabbing a new lid now that riding season has picked back up and you’re a fan of this German helmet’s style, there’s no reason to wait.

But thanks to this sale from Zappos, several great Filson shirts are up to 55 percent off. That means you’ll pay as little as $52 for a shirt that’s likely to outlast everything else in your closet. You could hop on the company’s new couch train, or you could take advantage of its newly discounted old ones — all of Burrow’s first sofas, loveseats, chairs and chaise kings are marked down between 15 and 20 percent off. R.M. Williams Chelsea Boots
Save 25%:In 1932, Reginal Murray Williams founded his eponymous brand in Adelaide, South Australia, offering saddles, riding boots and other leather goods for cattlemen. The boots, in particular, were a hit. Made from a single-piece leather upper, they had a clean silhouette, a simple pull-on style and superior durability. And over the past eight decades, the design hasn’t changed much.
In recent years, however, the brand received investment from L capital — a private-equity fund sponsored by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) — along with IFM Investors and Hugh Jackman. The influx of resources and capital has allowed R.M. Williams to expand on a global scale, offering its iconic boots to a much wider audience. You can pick up a pair at East Dane, where the classic Chelsea boot style is now on sale.
Available in both full-grain leather and suede, it features elastic insets, branded pull-tabs and leather soles. The current sale offers 25 percent off — that’s savings up to $162. — John Zientek

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp
Save 37%: If there’s one camping accessory to buy heading into summer, it’s a headlamp, and Black Diamond’s Spot, which is currently only $25 at Amazon thanks to a 37 percent discount, is better than a safe bet. It’s simple, but don’t take that to mean that it’s basic. The Spot uses three AAA batteries, is fully waterproof, and features a main light with 300 lumens of brightness. According to Black Diamond, it can shoot a beam of light 80 meters (262 feet), but we’re more impressed by how easily you can swap between its various modes (beam, flood, strobe, red night vision) and how its brightness is adjustable as necessary.

Black Diamond recently updated the Spot — it’s smaller, brighter and has a second button — and the model that’s on sale is the older one. At $25, it’s still an excellent deal on an even better headlamp that we’ve considered to be the best for years, but if you have to have what’s new, it’s only $15 more (you can buy it here). — Tanner Bowden

Succulents on Amazon
Save 25%: If you are someone with a thing for succulents, you need to get to Amazon quickly.

Part of today’s lot of Amazon Deals of the Day, a whole mess of succulents (and bonsai trees, for what it’s worth) are discounted by 25 percent. The sale includes everything from packs of five to packs of twenty, all pre-potted with soil.

If you’re new to keeping plants alive, here’s the short of it: succulents don’t need water often, prefer long bouts of direct sunlight and take up very little space. Buy a pack of 20 and dole them out on Mother’s Day. — Will Price

Bose QuietComfort 35 II
Save $80: You can buy the normally $350 headphones on eBay for $270 — that’s $80 off. They are refurbished which might be a red flag for some, but this is still the best deal we’ve seen on the Bose QuietComfort 35 II in a long time. You can occasionally find them discounted on Amazon or Best Buy for $300, but it’s not that often. The discount only applies to black models.

Timex Watches
Save Up to 25%: Just a week ago, Timex ran a sale on some of our favorite field watches. This week, the brand is going even further, offering a discount of 15% off purchases of $49+ or 25% purchases of $99+ with the discount code “TREATYOURSELF.” Whether you need a watch for the beach or something with a 12-hour bezel for keeping track of a second time zone, Timex has a summer watch for you. — Oren Hartov

Helinox Chair One Camp Chair
Save $55: Unlike a tent and a sleeping bag, the camp chair is a piece of outdoor furniture that many of us are perfectly okay with leaving behind. For many, the most packable of them aren’t comfortable enough to warrant schlepping up the side of a mountain, and the most comfortable are too cumbersome for any campsite that’s too far from a vehicle. Enter Helinox’s Chair One: it weighs roughly two pounds and packs down smaller than many sleeping bags yet offers elevated seating (so your bum won’t freeze on the ground) and comfortable back support. Helinox achieved this by building the chair with folding aluminum DAC poles that come together just like the ones your tent uses. The seat is nylon and mesh.

With the Chair One, it doesn’t matter where you stand in regard to backcountry seating — if you hate camp chairs, this is the one to turn you; if you love them, here’s your upgrade. It’ll work for camping trips but can also handle outings to the neighborhood park and is perfect for outdoor concerts too. It’s also marked down by 44 percent — that’s $55 off — at Mountain Steals. In addition to the Chair One deal, Mountain Steals is offering discounts on more packable outdoor seating from Helinox; there’s a larger (and smaller) version of the Chair One, a rocking chair, a swivel chair and more. — Tanner Bowden

Save 25%: Founded in 1883, Michigan-based Wolverine builds a range of rugged and dependable boots. The brand’s classic style, the 1000 Mile boot, is now on sale at East Dane. If you’ve been waiting to purchase a pair of American-made boots, this is a chance to score one of the best for a solid price.

Instant Pot Duo
Save Up to 40%: Today, the Instant Pot Duo, the best model for people who aren’t worried about looks, is one of Amazon’s Deals of the Day.

Starting at $48, the three-, six- and eight-quart models are all marked down to prices that match all-time lows on Amazon. The Duo does everything that made the Instant Pot famous in the first place: pressure cook, slow cook, steam, sautee and a whole pile of presets for specific foods (chili, yogurt, soup and so on). But unlike the newer and more premium Ultra and Max models, it doesn’t have an LCD display or a few more fringe preset cooking modes. If you’re cooking for more than one person, we recommend upgrading to the six-quart Duo. If you’re new to the Instant Pot landscape, let some of our favorite IP-specific recipes be your guide. — Will Price

Jomers Long Sleeve Polos
Save 40%: If you’ve been looking to update your warm-weather wardrobe, you should consider picking up a long sleeve polo shirt from Jomers. Made in Peru, the fabric for this shirt is woven into a pique from Oxford Pima yarn. Then the brand roasts the fabric in an oven, singeing the wispy Oxford fibers to produce an incredibly smooth texture. Available in five colors — sky blue, white, navy, dark blue and burgundy — Jomer’s slim-fit long sleeve polo shirts are now 40 percent off and cost just $18. Sizes are already selling out quickly, so if you want to pick up one (or several) of these for yourself, don’t wait.

10 Awesome Things Gear Patrol Readers Bought in April

As the weather continues to warm up, GP readers are readying themselves for summer and the freedom it brings with versatile bags for traveling, upgraded EDC, travel-focused apparel and new gadgets. To help keep you on top of the season’s trends, we’ve put together a list of the 10 products GP readers bought the most in April. Read the full list below.

Lodge Cast-Iron Grill Press

“Do you hate when bacon curls up in a pan and doesn’t build an even crust? Do you want a solution to this issue for the cost of roughly one packet of bacon? If you answered “yes” to both questions, consider Lodge’s discounted cast-iron grill press.” — Will Price

I.W. Suisse/NATO G10 Watchband

“One NATO strap stands above the rest, and it’s one of the least expensive models I’ve purchased. It’s made by I.W. SUISSE/NATO International, and it’s only available (to my knowledge) on eBay — for $11.” — Oren Hartov

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 60L

“Patagonia hit the nail on the head with the name of its line of heavy-duty carry-alls: Black Hole. That’s what a duffel should be — a bottomless pit into which you can toss anything and everything you might need for a day at the crag or an entire week in the opposite hemisphere.” — Tanner Bowden

Proof Merino Shirt

“Proof sources the wool from three sheep stations in New Zealand and uses a super-fine 17.5-micron yarn gauge to not only guarantee that it won’t stink, but that it’ll be comfortable too.” — Tanner Bowden

Yes4All Kettlebells

“Each pair has a painted black finish that will help with grip when you’re pumping out that last thruster and making it easier to hold steady during Farmer Walks. The flat bottom is imperative for put-downs and pick-ups, and the wide handle offers enough space for single and double arm swings, deadlifts, skull crushers, bicep curls and overhead presses. If you’re looking for a way to increase the intensity on your body weight workouts, these two sets of weights are a great place to start.” — Meg Lappe

Anker Soundcore Liberty Air Earbuds

“The Liberty Air are the best AirPod alternatives that actually look like AirPods. And despite being less than half the price, they still feel premium. The charging case feels very similar to the one that comes with AirPods, but has the added feature of LED lights, which show battery life; the swappable silicone tips also allow for more flexibility in terms of fit.” — Tucker Bowe

Jomers Jeans

“They’re available in five colors — olive, navy, dark camel, light gray and dark gray — and in both slim and standard fits. The 10.5-ounce denim is appropriate for multi-season wear and it includes three percent stretch for added comfort. If you’ve been meaning to get a new pair of jeans, don’t sleep on these — they’re practically a steal.” — John Zientek

CRKT Swindle Pocket Knife

“Designed by revered knife maker Ken Onion, the Swindle won the award for “Most Innovative Imported Design” at the 2013 Blade Show and has continued in CRKT’s production line since. The blade is just over three inches and comes in two versions — one made of high-carbon steel, and a premium version with Sandvik stainless steel and a milled handle.” — Tanner Bowden

Eagle Creek Packing Cubes

“Each lightweight (2.2-oz total for all three) bag has a top handle making it a breeze to move everything from your suitcase to a drawer. The compressive packs also make a stellar choice for any long backpacking trips or hiking excursions.” — Meg Lappe

Rotring Mechanical Pencil

“As much as I’d like to mix metaphors and puns with phrases like “get the lead out” and “full metal jacket,” this pencil speaks for itself: a thoroughly over-built mechanical writing implement that will likely outlast whatever life-ending apocalypse finally destroys humankind.” — Nick Caruso

Saint Unbreakable
Save Up to 40%: Saint Unbreakable prides itself on finding the happy medium between functional and fashionable motorcycle apparel. While Saint Unbreakable clothing does carry a timeless vintage style, it also incorporates a liberal amount of Dyneema for abrasion resistance. The upside to the brand’s method and style is there’s no extra bulk so Saint’s riding jeans and jackets can be worn pretty much anywhere, off the bike. On the other hand, the single layer construction is just that and only acts as protection against slides, not hard knocks as there is no armor for impacts.

That’s not to say you should pass on what Saint Unbreakable has to offer. If you’re looking for more casual riding gear for around town, chances are Saint Unbreakable has what you’re looking for. It is more of a lifestyle brand so prices will be on the higher side, but luckily, today, you can save up to 40% on a whole bunch of Saint Unbreakable apparel, from jeans and jackets to shirts and hats. — Bryan Campbell

Today in Gear: Farer’s New Lander Chronograph, an Expert’s Rules for Drinking Scotch & More

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Plenty of watches tout their heritage, but few can claim inspiration from a pioneering British explorer. In the case of Farer’s new Lander Chronograph, its namesake is Richard Lander, the only European crew member to survive after an 1825 expedition to West Africa. At the watch’s beating heart is the Swiss-made ETA 2894-2 Elaboré movement, which boasts an impressive 37 jewels and 28,800 beats per hour for a smooth sweeping action and highly accurate chronograph readings. The hard-wearing stainless steel case hits the sweet spot at 39mm in diameter while including clever details like oblong pushers, an eye-catching bronze crown and a dial done in Farer’s own sea green, a color last used on the brand’s best-selling GMT. Two oversized sub-dials are cut into the balanced face design for a distinctly vintage-inspired look that cements this new chronograph as a soon-to-be classic in timekeeping.

Suunto MC-2 Compass
Save 42%: Sure, the Google Maps app on your phone pinpoint your exact location within seconds, but when there’s no service available or your battery dies, there’s no stand-in for a good old fashioned compass. On its own, a compass will show where North, South and every direction between are. Paired with a map (and some knowledge — REI has a great guide on how to use a compass), a compass acts just like that app on your phone. It’s a smart thing to keep in your hiking backpack for those just-in-case moments, and right now a great one from Suunto, a brand known for its high-end GPS watches, is on sale at Massdrop for 42 percent off. — Tanner Bowden

Sony WH-H900N Noise-Canceling Headphones
Save $100: The Sony WH-H900N is essentially a less premium and more affordable alternative to the Sony WH-1000XM3, which is arguably the best noise-canceling headphones you can buy. The two headphones look very similar, but the WH-1000XM3 is more feature-packed and boasts better noise-canceling skills. On the flip side, the WH-H900N is way more affordable today.

Spinnaker Cahill Automatic Dive Watch
Save 68%: Spinnaker’s Cahill automatic dive watch is a decent value at its retail price of $410, but currently marked down by 68% to $130, there’s little reason not to pull the trigger if one of the three available versions grabs your attention. — Zen Love

16-Inch Knife Block
Save 50%: In 2013, the National Sanitation Foundation conducted a series of studies aimed at identifying the grimiest areas of our homes. Amongst spatulas, ice makers, can openers and your refrigerator meat compartment, the knife block made the list. Luckily, the alternative is better in literally every way.

Knife bars — like Modern Innovations’s discounted 16-inch option — are magnetic strips you fix to a wall or the side of the fridge. You don’t run the risk of bacteria growth with them and they cost significantly less than a block of wood. Plus, they don’t dull your knives. Cook’s Illustrated found knives stored in a block dulled far more quickly than other methods of storage (they recommend knife bars as well).

Pick up a full-sized knife bar for $17 on Amazon today. — Will Price

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Vancouver-based DUER designed some of the season’s best travel pants. The Live Free Adventure Pant is made from the brand’s lightest proprietary fabric, the Live Lite blend. A blend of Tencel, cotton, polyester and Lycra, this material is light, high stretch and seriously comfortable.

These are all characteristics any great pair of travel pants should possess, but DUER added function with additional features like stealth cargo pockets that’ll keep your phone safe and out of the way while riding a bike in, say, an exotic locale. Other upgrades include a Rainshield DWR coating (making the pants resistant to oil, dirt and water) and convertible snap cuffs for added versatility. So if you have adventure plans and need a reliable pair of pants, the Live Free Adventure Pants should be your new go-to.

Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket
Save $62: Since it came out in the fall of 2017, Patagonia’s Micro Puff Jacket has been our choice for the best synthetic insulated jacket. Simply put, it strikes the perfect balance of warmth and weight (it’s the lightest insulated jacket that Patagonia has made to date). The secret to its innovation is a new type of insulation called PlumaFill that’s made up of down-mimicking polyester fibers that are secured together in one continuous, fluffy line, which zig-zags around beneath its ripstop nylon shell.

The Micro Puff has been such a success that Patagonia used it as the base for the Micro Puff Storm, a waterproof version of the jacket that came out in Fall 2018. Later this year Patagonia will also release the Macro Puff, a heavier and warmer puffy jacket that will use a heartier helping of PlumaFill (and will likely be in as high demand as the Micro Puff).

That Patagonia has released variations of the Micro Puff by no means makes the jacket obsolete. If anything, it’s further verification that it, and it’s fluffy filling, work pretty damn well. Not just in winter either — the Micro Puff’s lightweight warmth makes it ideal for cool summer nights and mornings and mountain adventures. Right now the Micro Puff is 25 percent off at REI in past season colors — a savings of $62. — Tanner Bowden

The hype around the new Adidas Ultraboost 19 is real, which means the original Ultraboost has been on sale quite frequently this year, but who know how long that will last. It’s responsive, so each footfall is soft yet fast. You can’t go wrong with a Boost purchase. — Meg Lappe

Viking 5-Ply Stainless Steel Fry Pan
Save 50%+: “Clad” in stainless steel cookware patois is code for a pan with various types of metals bonded to one another. Think of clad skillets like a sandwich; typically, the top and bottom layers are hardwearing, shiny stainless steel and the middle layers are various forms of quick-heating aluminum. Because of this, the best stainless steel cookware is clad metal — it heats faster and lasts longer than pure steel or aluminum cookware.

Today on Massdrop, Viking’s 5-ply fry pans in 8-inch and 12-inch options are well over 50 percent off retail price. The pans feature a more upward-sloping handle, slightly higher walls and heavier construction than similarly priced competition (like All-Clad). — Will Price
