Right now, Backcountry is running a rare sort of sale: 20 percent off one full-priced item when you use the code TAKEOFF20 at checkout. The only catch? You have to subscribe to Backcountry’s email newsletter. Easy. (There are some additional exclusions, see the end of this post for full details on that.)

Now I know what you’re thinking — 20 percent isn’t that much of a reduction. Fair enough. Online gear retailers are always running sales on great items — to a point where you can almost get precisely what you want for a discount at any time of the year (or at the very least, something similar enough that can fill the same gap in your kit). But Backcountry’s discount applies to some items that truly never go on sale.

One of those items is Patagonia’s Micro Puff insulated jacket. The Micro Puff, which debuted last fall, is Patagonia’s newest and most innovative lightweight synthetic layer (and our favorite for 2018). Patagonia packed it with a new type of insulation that it developed called PlumaFill, which is made up of down-mimicking polyester fibers that are secured together in one continuous, fluffy line. The jacket’s exterior is superlight ripstop nylon. The sum of these two main ingredients is Patagonia’s lightest synthetic jacket yet (it weighs just 9.3 ounces). But the Micro Puff still provides as much, or more, warmth as other comparable mid-weight jackets.

Last fall I gave the Micro Puff a thorough test and was wholly impressed with the jacket. While positioned as an ultralight jacket for alpine pursuits, the Micro Puff doesn’t spare on features that other lightweight jackets might, like two zippered hand pockets and interior mesh pouches for additional storage. These are additions that make it a great everyday coat that’s well-suited to life around town and in the city.

My one gripe with the coat was, in fact, its price — $299 (innovation isn’t cheap) — but Backcountry’s sale makes the final sticker much more palatable at $239. For many, that still may seem like a lot to spend on a jacket. But given that the Micro Puff was just released and employs Patagonia’s newest technology, it should be noted that the jacket isn’t likely to receive updates any time soon, and won’t be marked down either (it was notably absent from the end-of-season sale that Patagonia held last month).

You can use Backcountry’s discount to purchase one item only. Exclusions from the deal include bikes, cameras, GPS, ski and snowboard gear and fishing equipment. Some brands have also opted out of the deal. The best way to find out if an item is included is to put it in your cart and apply the code.
