Quick Take: The 5235 Annual Calendar Regulator is something a bit different for Patek Philippe, being the brand’s only current watch to feature a regulator-style dial (in which the dial’s different functions are split into separate sections for seconds, minutes and hours). The new 5235R version presents an update to this unique model that’s often overlooked in favor of more complicated references and is differentiated by the “R” in its name (indicating its rose gold case material) and also by its dark dial color.

Who It’s For: Though most Patek Philippe watches may indeed be intended for collectors, the 5235R Annual Calendar Regulator is for the more daring among them — those who can appreciate something from the brand that doesn’t necessarily have the recognizability of certain “iconic” models.

Key Features: Regulator dials are based on clocks in watchmakers’ workshops that needed to be extremely accurate because they were used to set the watches being worked on. The central minute hand is emphasized to make this easier, whereas the hours and seconds are placed on smaller sub-dials. While this is uncommon for Patek, the annual calendar is one of the brand’s signature complications, and is present here with a date at 6 o’clock and windows for the month and day of the week flanking the hours sub-dial at 12 o’clock.

The movement inside is, of course, beautifully finished and visible through an exhibition case back. It features automatic winding via a micro-rotor, has a power reserve of 48 hours, and is also outfitted with silicon technology, including the brand’s Pulsomax escapement with a Spiromax silicon balance spring, and Gyromax” silicon balance. The Patek Philippe Ref. 5235R Annual Calendar Regulator measures 40.5mm wide and 10mm thick in rose gold, and it has a price of $51,830.
