In no uncertain terms, shopping for a refrigerator, range, washing machine, dryer or dishwasher is about as miserable and sad as shopping gets. At the most titillating, discussions around these purchasing decisions circle the length and breadth of warranties, the speed of the dry cycle relative to other dry cycles and the inclusion or exclusion of a microwave in favor of a hood for your stove. Not to disparage any of these important subjects, but none are particularly sexy (you should forgo a microwave for a hood, by the way).

But, if you are at a time in your life when the purchasing of one of these necessities has come, you’re in luck, this is one of the best times to buy appliances all year long.

Per Consumer Reports, September and October are down months in the pricing of most major appliances. Essentially, the sales pre-empting Black Friday and the holiday season are comparable to Black Friday and holiday season sales.

The typical spots to pick up appliances all have deals, discounts and free shipping (most definitely not free installation, though) opportunities — including Lowe’s, Home Depot and Sears, which each have discounts up to 40 percent off the sticker price in all major appliance categories. Most discounts run until the middle of the month — we’ve listed out some of the best deals we found below.
