Bugatti Sur Mesure, an even more bespoke option

You might think the options list on your latest car purchase was long and it took some time to wrap your head around which options to add, and which didn’t seem too interesting, but when you are up there in the ultra-high net worth list, things change considerably, shopping for your next Mercedes, Rolls Royce, or Bentley might give you stress with their almost unlimited range of possibilities and personal approach.

With Bentley, you can stray from the ‘basic’ options list and head over to their Mulliner studio that will grant you just about anything, as long as you can afford it, Rolls Royce created their Bespoke department for more individual possibilities while they even have the Coachbuild program now that will create a one-off Rolls Royce just for you. And this highly personal customization need has been seen by supercar manufacturers too, Lamborghini has their Ad Personam studio where clients can make requests outside of the more regular options, Ferrari offers Tailor Made for their more discerning aficionados, and while most hypercars are already a very individual expression of the customer, Bugatti wants to take it to the next level with their new ‘Sur Mesure’ program.

Buying a brand new Bugatti is a very personal experience, you don’t just put together your Bugatti Chiron with an online configurator, check a few boxes, and hit ‘order now’, there is a long way from start to finish before you’ll be taking delivery of your new hypercar from Molsheim in France, it usually starts by going to one of their worldwide dealerships and sit down with your personal contact to go over the plethora of options and possibilities on their in-house configurator, it is even possible to make an appointment and go to the Bugatti Automobiles SAS headquarters in France to really get the VIP treatment.

But now Bugatti created ‘Sur Mesure’, which is French for bespoke, personal, made just for you, and when you look at previous Bugatti cars you might wonder why, isn’t each single Chiron already a bespoke build for one specific client? Or how about La Voiture Noire, that one is as bespoke as it gets with only a single one made, well, it’s not the same, La Voiture Noire is a one-off, but it’s made by Bugatti and subsequently sold, so it wasn’t really a custom-built for one specific customer.

But there are some other examples, like for instance the Bugatti Divo Lady Bug with her $1,000,000 paint option, that surely was a very personal order from a customer in the United States, or how about the Bugatti Chiron Sport ‘Alice’, the special Valentine’s gift ordered in the UK, another very personal combination … so it’s safe to say just about every Bugatti Chiron built is a one-off, bespoke car, but it seems there are customers out there that aren’t satisfied with that level of customization, they want to take it to the next level, almost a coach build level where they order a car with substantial differences from the standard model if such a thing even exists at Bugatti.

As a response to the ever-growing demand for more personalized cars, Bugatti introduces Sur Mesure as their official customization program, and they already have the first Chiron that went through this program ready, taking inspiration from classic Bugatti Grand Prix heroes, more specifically Louis Chiron, when he won countless races behind the wheel of a Bugatti Type 51 that had the race number 32 when he took the victory of the 1931 French Grand Prix with Achille Varzi, so that number has been hand-painted onto this first Sur Mesure customer car, a Chiron Pur Sport.

Let’s not forget this showcase of Bugatti’s ability to really make a personal hypercar already started back in 2013 when they introduced the Veyron Les Légendes de Bugatti, with six exclusive editions to celebrate individual heroes of the marque, each with its one-off exterior and interior finish, and more recently with the Chiron Zebra in 2019 that was a special order from a customer in the Middle East featuring a very ‘personal’ combination of Titanic Blue and Gunpower Grey on the outside, a paint job that took three weeks in the atelier at Molsheim, which is nothing compared to the aforementioned Divo Lady Bug, that elaborate paint scheme took them 18 months to complete.

But now Bugatti wants to streamline those special commissions into an even more one-to-one support from the Sur Mesure team, guiding clients through the vast array of options and possibilities Bugatti can offer to create a unique piece of personalized art on wheels, Bugatti Sur Mesure will take the customer from the initial design concepts over the actual production of the car at Molsheim, right up to the handover of the finished hypercar … hence the complete Molsheim experience.

I guess it won’t come as a surprise that the paint on this Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport Sur Mesure is a custom job too, both shades have been created just for this customer’s car to pay homage to the legendary Grand Prix racing Bugattis of the ‘20s and ‘30s, but it didn’t end there. I’m sure you’ve seen the pattern on the Divo Lady Bug, heck, even on the Lamborghini Huracán STO it seems those fading dots are a rage these days, but Bugatti took it to the next level with Sur Mesure … take a closer look at the fading red pattern, those are actual EB logo painted as a fading pattern, by hand, a new technique created by the Sur Mesure team.

And something similar has been achieved on the interior with a multi-layer EB motif on the door panels, another process created by Bugatti’s Sur Mesure team, it makes the Grand Prix door sills and plaque on the central console look simple in comparison while the ’32’ inspiration continues on the bespoke inlay on the central console in black anodized aluminum with a hand-painted, silver inscription.

Hendrik Malinowski, Bugatti’s Managing Director for Sales and Marketing, comments: “For many years, we have worked with our clients to create their own personal vision of the Bultimate hyper sports car. It has always been a highly tailored process, but as an ever-increasing number of our clients request detailed and intricate customization, the launch of Bugatti Sur Mesure will ensure we can cater to their desires with the perfect level of detail required from a Bugatti.”

“Our clients are often deeply intrigued by Bugatti’s motorsport lineage, and it’s fitting that the first Sur Mesure commission should pay homage to one of our great racing icons. We’re so taken with this creation that we intend to make many of this customer’s ideas available to more of our clients with the Chiron Pur Sport.”

So if you are looking to add a very special, one-off Bugatti Chiron to your collection, you might want to head over to your local Bugatti dealership and make an appointment for a Sur Mesure meeting with the team from Molsheim, and you might want to make that quick as the final production slots for the Bugatti Chiron are running out as we speak, production of the current Chiron hypercar is all but sold out already.

New Morgan Plus 8 GTR Revealed

Morgan Motor Company has just finished manufacturing the first Morgan Plus 8 GTR, the most powerful car in Morgan’s history so far. The first Morgan Plus 8 GTR was completed at the company’s Malvern Link, Worcestershire factory.

The first example was given a Yas Marina Blue finish which evokes the image of the original design sketches that were released when they announced the upcoming model back in February of this year. The sketches were tributes to the Plus 8 race car ‘Big Blue’ which was a truly prominent figure in the nineties.

The Plus 8 GTR project is limited only to nine examples mainly due to the recent availability of Plus 8 rolling chassis.

The other eight cars are all currently in production although it is estimated that several of them will be finishing their build by the end of the year. The remaining examples will be finished by the first quarter of 2022. Customers of all 9 examples closely worked with the design team at Morgan’s to be able to commission their own bespoke example, which is a real testament to the company’s personalization capabilities.

Five of the eight vehicles currently in production will be exported globally, and all nine cars are produced in different configurations like the varied transmission and drive side that were set according to the client’s needs.

Morgan Motor Company Chairman and CEO Steve Morris shared, “We are excited to release the first images of the Plus 8 GTR following the design sketches published earlier this year. The Plus 8 GTR represents an opportunity for Morgan to celebrate the V8 engine once again, something we did not expect to do since finishing the Plus 8 and Aero 8 models in 2018. Striking design, the finest craftsmanship, and an exhilarating sports car to drive, the Plus 8 GTR is the perfect swansong to the Morgan V8. We have been delighted to work alongside customers from around the world during the design and build process, and we look forward to sharing the final examples over the coming months.”

The design of the Plus 8 GTR was truly unconventional as they explored design themes that have not been seen on a traditional Morgan body for decades. It had a five-spoke center-lock wheels that were perfectly framed by the re-sculpted wheel arches. It was a design influenced by the Morgan 1990s Plus 8 race cars.

Other design elements include handcrafted aluminum front wings, revised rear end, and front splitter. The Plus 8 GTR’s racing aesthetic is completed by the hard top with a cockpit vent.

For the interior, it was given new door cards that matches with the high door tops and bespoke GTR dials. Clients also have the option of getting the carbon fiber racing seats and harnesses. Each GTR will be fitted with a plaque that shows its number in the build sequence.

The Morgan Motor Company also took certain design elements from the Plus 8 race car also dubbed as ‘Big Blue’ that competed in the GT series through the late nineties. The car was used as a testbed for Morgan’s first bonded aluminum ‘chassis’.

Like a typical Morgan, all the Plus 8 GTRs were hand crafted using traditional coaching techniques.

The Plus 8 GTR is the company’s second special project of the year after the Plus Four CX-T. Although the Plus Four CX-T is greatly different from the Plus 8 GTR in terms of fashion, they are both great models that shows the flexibility of the Morgan brand especially in terms of design, craft, and driving experience.

Best Used Sports & Performance Cars ($100K–$200K USD)

Having a 6-figure budget (USD) at your disposal will certainly open the door to some pretty mouth-watering options when it comes to purchasing your next car. Sure, there’s nothing like the scent of fresh leather or Alcantara, along with that near-zero reading on the odometer that only a brand new car can provide. But pre-owned cars—especially ones in this price bracket—should always be part of the equation when cross-shopping between different models or brands.

Even if you do have your heart set on a very specific model, buying used can be a great way to go. If you can save a significant chunk of change by purchasing a used vehicle without taking on any meaningful additional risks, why not?

Cars these days have to pass the most rigorous quality assurance standards, and are more reliable, durable and well put together than ever before. History checks are easy enough to perform on your own, while dealerships often include reasonable short-term warranty coverage (i.e. ‘certified pre-owned’) as part of the sale. Often times, this makes the value of proposition of going ‘new vs. used’, one that is sentimental, rather than logical.

Of course, the current chip shortage and other economic variables have been at play recently; these have set the conditions for an almost-universal ‘hot’ used car market. In rare instances, some pre-owned cars have been going for near, or even over, brand new MSRP as the supply chain continues to be disrupted.

Regardless, here’s our list of the Best Used Sports & Performance Cars you can purchase in the $100K – $200K USD range. In the interest of keeping this list digestible, we’ve also filtered it down to cars produced within the last 10 model years; we’ll save older and vintage cars for another list.

All that being said, a lot of these examples will still have their original manufacturer’s warranty intact—not unlike a brand new car.

Porsche 911 GT3 (991.1, 991.2)

Porsche 911 GT3 991.1

Price Range: $135K – $160K (2014-2015 model years, 991.1)

In an era ripe with 4.0L naturally-aspirated flat-6 911 GT3 and GT3 RS cars, the 991.1 GT3 might appear to be a bit of a black sheep with its smaller 3.8L unit. Used market prices generally echo this sentiment, but that also presents the opportunity to get into an amazing car at an attractive price.

In fact, this should make it a prime candidate for those who are looking for a capable track car, and would rather put their money where it really matters when it comes to this—more tires, more brake pads, and most important of all, more seat time. Better yet, the car still has a couple years remaining on the car’s 10-year engine warranty.

Porsche 911 GT3 991.2

Price Range: $180K – $200K (2018 model year, 991.2)

The 991.2 GT3 commands significant premium over the first phase model as it is a better all-around car. This is in large part thanks to the use of the more robust and more powerful 4.0L unit. However, arguably more important than that, is the fact that the .2 models could also be had with a 6-speed manual transmission while the .1 models were exclusively PDK.

This has made the car more appealing to a wider ranging audience. Moreover, the 991.2 GT3 is the only 991-gen GT model that could be had with 3 pedals (barring the ultra-rare 911R), and has become a big hit with the purist and enthusiast crowds.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (C7)

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Price Range: $150K – $190K (2019 model year)

Before the new Corvette Z06 (C8), the Corvette ZR1 (C7) reigned supreme over all other Corvettes. The ZR1 is responsible for some important milestones for the model and the American automaker. For one, it served as the swan song for front-engined Corvettes—before they became mid-engined in the current C8-gen—and was the final model release in the previous-gen range.

Naturally, it also inherited top spot in the hierarchy as the most powerful Corvette ever produced; this remains a bragging right it continues to boast, even with the release of the aforementioned Z06.

It might be some time yet before we see the ZR1’s 6.2L supercharged V8 engine usurped in terms of output, with 755 hp and 715 lb-ft of torque at its beckoning. Improved aerodynamics help to provide some semblance of balance to this monster of a car, making it possibly one of the more underrated weekend warrior track cars out there.

Nissan GT-R Nismo

2016 Nissan GT-R Nismo

Price Range: $150K – $200K (2014-2019 model years)

As Nissan’s R35 GT-R platform really starts to show its age, most would agree that the Nismo models have been the only saving grace of what would otherwise be a case of ‘same-old-brand-new-you’. The range-topping R35 Nismo models have only been around since about half-way through the current decade+ lifecycle, first appearing for the 2014 model year.

While the Nismo models (2014-2019) have progressively improved over the years, there isn’t one model year that sticks out as being particularly more desirable at the moment, so you can expect a linear relationship between price and year, with other factors such as mileage and condition coming into play thereafter.

The GT-R Nismo was significantly refreshed for 2020 model year, with anything beyond that point commanding well over $200K new or used.

Mercedes-AMG GT

Mercedes-AMG GT R

Price Range:$135K – $185K (2018-2019 model years)

While we believe that the track-oriented GT R models would serve well as grand tourers for most enthusiasts, we wouldn’t argue that the lower trims (GT and GT C) are better options as an everyday cruiser. Afterall, opting for either of those models also unlocks the choice of having them in Roadster (convertible) configurations.

Stepping up to the 577 hp AMG GT R nets you Mercedes-Benz’ flagship supercar, which is the amalgamation of half a century of motorsports success placed into a single Nürburgring lap. Lightened, sharpened and strengthened, its racing DNA is evident in every fiber of its body, chassis and soul.

For those looking for that extra bit of the apex-clipping good stuff, the limited edition ‘GT R Pro’ is an even more track-focused variant of the GT R. Only the special ‘Black Edition’ model is out of the scope of this price range.

Acura NSX

2021 Acura NSX

Price Range: $140K – $180K (2017-2020 model years)

I am one of those who believes that the new Acura NSX gets way more flack than it deserves. True, it seems to be missing the mark on harkening back to the original model—which most people were expecting, but was likely never really Honda’s intention—but it remains a very impressive car from a performance/outcome standpoint.

The company also recently unveiled a new Type S model, which starts brand new at $169,500; easily within our price range for this list. Well, it is, and it isn’t—the limited edition car is expected to command closer to $200K with options, and will likely go for prices inflated well beyond that when they eventually hit the used market.

Your best bet is to focus your search on the more-than-capable ‘base’ models, which come with the tried-and-tested 573 hp twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid engine assisted by 3 electric motors.

Porsche Cayman GT4 (981 & 718)

2016 Porsche 981 Cayman GT4

Price Range: $110K – $130K (2016 model year, 981)

The Porsche Cayman GT4 models are some of the hottest cars in the enthusiast market, especially amongst track go-ers. With the new 718 GT4 RS being released, demand for the regular GT4 models could go either way depending on how many RS models (and at what frequency) Porsche decides to produce.

In my opinion, I think it’d be safe to assume that it’s going to be hard enough to get one, such that most prospective buyers would end up choosing a GT4 instead—and be very happy with that decision, mind you. First-gen GT4s are the cheaper of the two options, and make for pretty much some of the best weekend track warriors at its price range.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Boxster Spyder & 718 Boxster Spyder overall review

Price Range: $135K – $150K (2020-2021 model years, 718)

The 981-gen Cayman and the newer 718 GT4 (available in both coupé and convertible configuration) are remarkably balanced cars, and in the right hands, can be just as quick around the circuit as their more expensive 911 stablemates.

The 718 cars are at the higher end of the price range, being newer and all, but also have the more robust and exclusive 4.0L engine versus the 3.8L (and still highly capable) unit in the 981. PDK is also optional in the newer car—the 981 is manual only—which will tickle the fancy of track junkies, much more than the purists.

The 981 is more raw, the 718 is faster. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage S

22017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S

Price Range: $125K – $165K (2015-2017 model years)

If the deeply integrated electronic systems of other sports cars don’t appeal to you—like those found in the new, tech-laden Porsche 911 GT3—the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S might just have the right blend of speed, style and character you’re looking for. Yet, with the confidence you feel behind the wheel and the chassis’ superb balance, you don’t need to be a GT racer to exploit its full range of performance.

Even at idle, the V12 in the Vantage S will demand your attention just from the way it sounds. Open up the throttle on the 565 hp 5.9L naturally-aspirated AM28-spec engine, and treat yourself to arguably the best sounding production road car on the planet—one which can be had for well under the $200K mark.

Audi R8

2016 Audi R8 V10

Price Range: $100K – $200K (2012-2020 model years)

The Audi R8 has the highest range of prices (and applicable model years) on this list. You can go back as far as 13 years when shopping for a pre-owned Audi R8, so it’s important to discern the differences of each model year, as their technologies and offerings have evolved a fair bit over that time as well.

Our favorite R8 model would have to be the Audi R8 RWD. Now a standard, instead of a one-off offering, the rear-wheel drive version of Audi’s famous R8 supercar is wonderful for so many reasons. Not only does it provide a notably lower price of entry into ownership of a new R8, it also brings about the puristic thrills that its heavier and more expensive all-wheel-drive counterpart can’t.

No doubt the newer models are sharper in both the driving dynamics and looks departments, but being able to get into an older model for far fewer greenbacks has its appeals too.

McLaren 570S

McLaren 570S Coupé Wallpapers

Price Range: $160K – $200K (2016-2018 model years)

There aren’t many opportunities to get into a McLaren for under $200K, but a pre-owned 570S provides one of those rare chances to do just that. While the 570S isn’t anywhere near being the British automaker’s top model, it remains a highly respectable performance car on its own merits, and is certainly one of the stand-out options in this price range.

After all, you’re getting McLaren’s infamous carbon-tub monocoque chassis and a mid-mounted 3.8L twin-turbo V8 powerplant—delivering 562 hp @ 7,500 rpm and 443 lb-ft of torque @ 5,000-6500 rpm to the rear wheels—which is mated to a 7-speed SSG (seamless-shift gearbox) transmission.

The drivetrain has been praised for its linearity, and although peak numbers are achieved after 5,000 rpm, the car also has plenty of low-end grunt and responsiveness too. The end result is a 0-62 mph time of just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph.

Porsche 911 Turbo & Turbo S (991.2)

991 Porsche 911 Turbo Turbo S

Price Range:$145K – $200K (2015-2018 model years, Turbo), (2018-2019 model years, Turbo S)

While there’s no doubt that the latest 992-gen Turbo and Turbo S are all-around better cars than their predecessors, the most recent run of such cars (991.2) are no slouches either; and in many cases, they can be bargains on the used market when you begin to line up the specs with their respective prices.

For example, the lower-trim 991.2 Turbo model is good for 0-60 mph in just 2.7 seconds (plenty quick for just about anyone) and can be had for under $140K on the used market. Today’s range-topping Turbo S is unquestionably faster, able to hit that benchmark in a mind-boggling 2.2 seconds—it’s up to you (and your wallet) to decide whether that half-second is worth that extra $70K – $90K, and if having your mind boggled on a daily basis is even necessary.

Of course, there’s newer tech just about everywhere on the new cars too, but there will never be an ounce of shame owning any car that has the word Turbo (or Turbo S) scribed after those legendary 911 numerals.

Unique Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport shows off customizing program

It’s strange, but there’s really no shortage of incredible supercars to pick from nowadays. Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Pagani, Koenigsegg, Bugatti, Aston Martin and Porsche, among others, are continuously rolling out ever faster, rarer and more unusual supercars. And as a result, buyers want more than just a choice of paint and interior colors to pick from. They want unique color schemes to stand out from the other supercar owners. Automakers such as McLaren have learned this with programs like MSO, and now Bugatti is launching a service called Sur Mesure, which translates to “tailored.” And its first customer car is the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport GP Sur Mesure you see above.

According to Bugatti, the car is a tribute to racing driver Louis Chiron, who won the 1931 French Grand Prix driving a Bugatti Type 51. The custom Chiron Pur Sport features the same style “32” on the outside and embroidered on the seat backs as Chiron’s Type 51. That number is hand-painted on the doors, as are the “EB” logo patterns on the front and rear fenders. Based on photos of the paint process, it seems some intricate masking was used, requiring careful removal after painting. The exterior paint color is a new hue that was created to match that of 1930s Bugatti race cars.

Inside, the Chiron Pur Sport is mostly black and red Alcantara. The most unique aspects are the door panels that feature the same type of “EB” pattern as on the fenders, but this time with embroidery. The car also gets black anodized aluminum trim panels with silver logos.

No pricing was given for this one-off Bugatti, nor were any estimates for services given. This is likely because every project will be different depending on the customers’ ideas, so the amount of time and cost will vary. Seeing as customers will be guided through the process and receive truly custom cars at the end, ones based on cars that already have seven-figure price tags, the costs must be mighty high.

More than you can afford … Ferrari

Who doesn’t remember those glorious words from the 2001 movie The Fast and the Furious when Brian and Dom take the bright orange 1995 Toyota Supra for a test drive and they encounter a black Ferrari F355 Spider, and Brian asks about the retail on the Prancing Horse … to which the driver replies ‘More than you can afford pall … Ferrari’?

I must have watched all of the FF movies several times, but personally, I still feel the first one is among the best of the series, and while at the time this clip was recorded, that reply was accurate, things have changed considerably since then, and today that Supra is multiple times more valuable than the Ferrari F355, especially one of the orange movie cars that was actually driven by Paul Walker, as one of those sold at auction recently for $550,000 … and that wasn’t even the hero car.

Chassis JT2JA82J3R0009030, the 1994 Toyota Supra, was built by Eddie Paul at The Shark Shop in El Segundo, CA, for the first movie, but it was this very car that was repainted gold to be used in FF2, later the original setup of Lamborghini’s pearl metallic orange was redone, but it didn’t get the engine mods like the real hero car, this specific car had a factory original 2JZ-GTE 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 with a 4-speed automatic.

Back to the famous drag race scene from FAST and FURIOUS, at the time this was a 19950 Ferrari F355 Spider, and she was driven by Neal H. Moritz, the co-producer of “The Fast and the Furious” franchise, initial MSRP was $137,000, considerably more than the customized Supra MkIV, even with all the modifications like a 2JZ 3.1 engine swap, a large Turbonetics T-66 ball-bearing turbo & Delta II wastegate, custom headers, a NOS system.

While obtaining a 1995 period correct Toyota Supra MkIV is already getting expensive, making her into an FF look-alike will be next to impossible as the aero kit and wheels will be extremely difficult to source, but with a listing on BringATrailer for a 1997 Ferrari F355 Spider, you might be able to own the ‘other’ famous car from the first movie, the black Ferrari.

It might not be the real car from the movie itself, but it is a perfect look-alike nonetheless, so it might be interesting to look into, with just two more days of the auction the bid is at $73,000, so that number might still go up before the virtual hammer comes down, let’s take a look at what you get for that kind of money in today’s market:

The Ferrari F355 Spider comes with a 3.5-Liter V8 engine powering the rear wheels only, with a six-speed manual transmission capable to spin those large 18-inch, five-spoke original Ferrari wheels. And this car is a so-called triple black one, a black body over a black leather interior with a black canvas top, aside from red on tan probably the most interesting color combination out there.

The Ferrari F355 is a Pininfarina design, and while the predecessor, the 348 came with the side intake streaks inspired by the flagship V12 Testarossa, the F355 returned to twin round taillights and a large side air intake almost carved out of the door skin, a very beautiful car, even almost 25 years later, after this model Ferrari came up with the 360 Modena, which for me personally just didn’t look as good as the F355.

The all-black, leather interior inside this specific car features sport seats and leather upholstery on the dashboard and door cards, while color-coded black carpets are protected by floor mats, there is even a period-correct Sony radio/cassette player … probably without Bluetooth, but this is a classic, and let’s face it, the music from that V8 just inches behind your ears is all the sound you need driving this lady with the top down, the moment you wrap your left hand on the thick leather steering wheel and put your right hand on the chrome gearshift lever … nothing else matters.

If you are interested in obtaining this movie car lookalike, head over to the auction at BringATrailer and possibly put in your bid, so you can make that famous statement “More than you can afford pall … Ferrari”, just make sure you’re not next to an actual FF movie car …

Project Maybach: A Tribute to Virgil Abloh by Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz will be revealing Project Maybach following the wishes of Virgil Abloh’s family. The project will present a collaborative electric show car designed to inspire the next generation of cars.

As a way of paying tribute to the late Virgil Abloh, Mercedes will be opening the doors of the Rubell Museum to showcase Project Maybach to the public. The event will be exclusive to students from local design schools and will take place between 1st and 2nd december from 11.30am to 12.30 pm.

The main focus for both Abloh and Wagener was a responsible vision of future design. Thanks to complete creative freedom and unlimited production requirements, the design team fitted solar cells under the transparent surface of the show cars front hood to further increase the imagined range of Project Maybach.

Project Maybach show car was inspired by the possibility of exploring nature within a unique luxury context with Mayach. Mercedes team thanks Virgil Abloh for the inspiration to explore the power of cross-industry dialogue to imagine a better and a more inclusive future.

Review: Dodge’s Delicious 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat AWD

Last year when we drove the the Dodge Durango SRT 392, we came away suitably impressed. The 392 had all the space and utility of the Durango with the heart and soul of a muscle car. It was the best of all worlds and we enjoyed it thoroughly. Still…there was a nagging desire in the back of our minds for something a bit…more. Not necessarily more space or more comfort or more amenities, but more…power. More…speed. More…untamed bottled rage. We wanted to see the Hellcat engine dropped into the chassis. Dodge must have been reading a few pages ahead of us because they were already hard at work at making our yet-to-be-realized dreams come true. Now that the dream has become reality, we got to spend some time putting it through the paces.

Dodge delivered a Redline Pearl example with twin black racing stripes to us. It looked meaner than the 392. I don’t know if it was the deep, sharp splitter or the huge cold-air intake on the wide hood flanked by enormous heat vents, but something about it seemed to emanate serious speed. Maybe it was the large twin exhaust pipes sticking out from beneath the tail. Or the chrome Hellcat badges on the flanks. Maybe it was all those little clues rolled up into one serious-looking speed wagon.

Red Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat

Inside was a mixture of monochromatic materials: black bolstered leather and suede seats with “SRT” and the Hellcat logo, black carpeting, black console and dash, with some chrome trim bits and the inimitable green and black of pressure-molded carbon fiber. With two extra rows of seats, there’s seating for six. All of it folds flat for enormous cargo capacity. The seats were quite comfortable, and with both heating elements and forced air ventilation you’d be hard-pressed to ever find yourself uncomfortable, no matter how long the trip might be.

Under the hood lay the legendary Hellcat engine, that 6.2L supercharged Hemi V8 that generates 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of and at full-honk those dreams are fulfilled. The power is routed through an 8-speed automatic transmission connected to a set of paddle shifters behind the wheel and is transferred to the pavement through all four wheels. That’s right, the Durango SRT Hellcat is a full-time AWD, pavement-wrinkling land rocket. Plant the throttle and it launches, clicking through its gears until the gearing and aerodynamics can’t overcome the wind resistance any longer. What speed is that at? I’m not sure because we weren’t about to attempt those speeds on public roads but Dodge tells us it’ll top out over 180mph. We CAN tell you that 0-60 mph happens in under 4 seconds. We tried and proved that over and over and over again. Y’know…just for scientific research purposes.

Reigning in all that speed is done by massive Brembo performance brake calipers clamping down on huge dinner-plate sized two-piece ventilated brake rotors. The brakes are a little grabby but they do an exceptional job of scrubbing speed off when you’re coming in too hot. Surrounding the brakes are unique 20” wheels shod with Pirelli performance tires.

There are several drive modes available to choose from – auto, sport, track, tow, and snow. Each influences the behavior of the engine, the transmission’s shift speed, the all-wheel drive system, the steering, the suspension, and the stability control.

Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat rear

Driving the Durango SRT Hellcat is quite an experience. While acceleration is intoxicating and handling is impressive, the steering feels a little lighter than we’d like. A little more weighting would be nice. Given the kid-carrying capacity of the Durango though, perhaps Dodge is expecting moms to be the primary drivers of SRT Hellcat Durangos. Lucky moms! And while the engine generates oceans of torque and light-years of speed, the exhaust can get a little boomy inside. We noticed this with the 392 version and hoped that the SRT Hellcat model would eliminate it but it’s still there and it can get uncomfortable on the eardrums at certain revs.

The EPA estimates that the SRT Hellcat Durango will get 17 mpg on the freeway and 12 in the city. We were in the ballpark. After driving the Ram TRX, this iteration of a Hellcat-powered truck actually seemed efficient. But let’s be honest, if you’re buying a Durango Hellcat you already know you’re going to burn a lot of fuel. Worth it though.

The Hellcat SRT Durango starts at around $81,000. Ours optioned out around $91,000. That’s a lot but if you’re looking for the ultimate family hauler, boat tower, and unusual track weapon, this is your truck.

10 Sedans That Blur the Line Between Practicality & ‘Next Level’ Performance

The automobile industry is in a state of constant change, thanks to advancements in technology and dynamic consumer tastes. This becomes even more evident when you consider how much the notion of vehicle performance has evolved over the years.

Gone are the days when the rush of adrenaline behind the wheel was only possible with full-on sports cars. One of the fastest accelerating cars today is a sedan, something that would have been inconceivable just a few years ago.

There are now sedans that will rival sports cars for speed and overall handling without compromising too much in the way of everyday practicability. The examples highlighted here prove that sedans no longer have to be boring and can be so much more than glorified people carriers.

#10: BMW M5 CS

BMW M5 CSVia Motor1.

The BMW M5 CS sports sedan is undoubtedly the most extreme road-going family car released by BMW’s ‘M’ Division. It is powered by the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine found in the M5 Competition. However, BMW engineers have been able to squeeze out ten extra horsepower, resulting in a total output of 627-hp, making it the most powerful BMW road car—at least for now.

It’s not just for show, either. The BMW M5 CS can sprint to 60 mph in a blistering 2.8 seconds, and the needle will continue climbing until the car maxes out at a restricted 190 mph top speed. It may be a sedan, alright, but those stats are right up in sports car territory.

#9: Mercedes Benz E63 S AMG

2021 Mercedes Benz E63 S AMGVia Edmunds.

The latest iteration of this AMG powerhouse packs enough arsenal to take on such a formidable rival like the BMW M5 CS. They both share a twin-turbo V8, but in this case, the power plant churns out a stout 603-hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

It may be slightly down on power compared to BMW’s M5 CS, but the Merc also has no problem hitting 60 mph in less than 3 seconds. The top speed is capped at 186 mph by an electronic governor. Interestingly, this maximum speed is reached at about 5,000 rpm in the ninth gear, and one can only wonder how much faster the E63 S AMG can go without restrictions.

#8: 2021 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody

2021 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye WidebodyVia Mopar Industries.

This American brute will probably be well past the 60 mph mark by the time you wrap your tongue around its lengthy name. The Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody is big, beefy and checks all the boxes for a family car with ample boot space and seating for five adults. It also happens to be one of the fastest American sedans ever made, with a top speed north of 200 mph.

At the heart of the Charger’s performance is a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 that belts out a frankly ridiculous 797-hp and 707 lb-ft of torque. It’s power that can be unleashed in a flash, instantly transforming the rather mundane-looking Charger into something decidedly more potent.

#7: 2021 Audi S6

2021 Audi S6 on mountain roadVia Edmunds.

The ‘S’ designation marks this one as the sporty variant of the A6 sedan. Audi did not follow the V8 route of its main rivals, Mercedes Benz or BMW, and instead opted for a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 unit to power the 2021 Audi S6.

That engine is aided by a 48-volt hybrid system for a total yield of 444-hp. The S6 has the classic subtle looks that make it perfect for a school run, and it comes loaded with an extensive suite of driving assistance features to make daily cruising an absolute pleasure.

However, it still packs enough punch to surprise the unwary driver on the highway. Certainly, a 4.4-second dash to 60 mph is nothing to sneeze at. That’s as rapid as the Ford Mustang GT.

#6: 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia QuadrifoglioVia Inside Hook.

Alfa Romeo does not get the credit it deserves. That may be connected to the dominant nature of its rivals. However, the Italian carmaker has its signature behind some truly impressive models like the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Its strong points include sharp handling and a playful demeanour, but the highlight has got to be the Ferrari-derived twin-turbocharged V6 shoehorned under the hood. It feeds 505-hp to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission for some truly breathtaking performance.

This sedan will slide around and rocket down a straight like a thoroughbred sports car, but it can also dial things down when needed, making it perfect as a daily driver.

#5: Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid

2021 Porsche Panamera S E-HybridVia Car Indigo.

This sports sedan continues to impress with its performance. First, the hybrid powertrain makes it one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class, with up to 48 MPGe for combined city and highway driving.

There’s also another purpose for the hybrid setup—more power. The 2021 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid cranks out a thumping 689-hp and 642 lb-ft of torque from its 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V-8 and electric motor combo. It helps the Panamera shrug off its considerable 5,400-pound weight, getting it to 60 mph in about 3 seconds.

#4: Mercedes Benz AMG GT 63 S

Mercedes Benz AMG GT 63 SVia Economic Times.

The AMG GT 63 S gives off sports car vibes with its low profile, but it’s a proper sedan with enough room for four adults. That makes its scorching performance even more impressive. It weighs over 4,700 lbs, but you wouldn’t know it as you watch the car rocket from rest to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and past the quarter-mile marker in 11.1 seconds at 125 mph.

It will handily beat sports cars like the Toyota Supra and Porsche 718 Boxster out on the drag strip. The secrets of its performance include a racy chassis, AMG-tuned 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and a twin-turbo V8, good for 630-hp and 664 lb-ft of torque.

#3: Porsche Taycan Turbo S

Porsche Taycan Turbo S on mountain roadVia EV Database.

It’s clear now that all-electric cars are here to stay and will play a big part in shaping the future of the automobile industry. However, cars like the Taycan Turbo S demonstrate that the future does not have to be boring, filled with noiseless battery carts that do little apart from conveying people from one point to another.

The Taycan Turbo S has turned out to be a big success story, thanks partly to the influence of the brand, but there’s also the fact that the EV has been able to seamlessly combine practicality and performance in one package.

It’s roomy, comfortable and can effortlessly handle routine family tasks like grocery trips, school runs and a cruise to the office. You almost forget this is a car that can also bolt to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, thanks to a brutally effective launch control feature and an overboost function that can supply as much as 750-hp for short stints.

#2: Tesla Model S Plaid

Tesla Model S PlaidVia Motor1.

There are only a handful of cars that can rival the Tesla Model S Plaid for straight-line acceleration. In ideal conditions and with the ‘Cheetah Stance’ engaged, the EV can hit 60 mph in less than 2 seconds and finish the quarter-mile run in an astounding 9.34 seconds at 152 mph.

That’s faster than hypercar stalwarts like the McLaren Speedtail or the Bugatti Chiron. Yet, the Tesla Model S Plaid is not considered to be a sports car. It’s a full-size sedan with all of the comfort features of the typical family car.

To be fair, though, it does have a bank of three electric motors that supply 1,021-hp and 1,050 lb-ft of instant torque. Therein lies the secret of its mind-boggling performance.

#1: Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

Cadillac CT5-V BlackwingVia Car and Driver.

Cadillac may have announced that it’s going all-electric by 2030, but the carmaker is not quite done with petrol engines just yet. The CT5-V sedan is proof of that.

The ‘Blackwing’ is not a reference to the engine, like in the days of old. Instead, it’s meant to earmark this hulking beast as the new pinnacle of performance sedans for the American brand.

The CT5-V Blackwing gets a supercharged V8 that pushes out a tire-shredding 668-hp and 659 lb-ft of torque at peak RPMs. That output makes it the most powerful production Cadillac ever made. According to the carmaker, the full-size sedan can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and max out at a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

The Nissan Z GT500 race car

NISMO, or the Nissan Motorsports International Co. Ltd, just unveiled their latest track weapon together with Nissan Motor Co. Ltd in Yokohama, Japan, the Z GT500, shown at the world-famous Fuji Internation Speedway, this new race car will compete in the 2022 season of the Super GT Series, as a move to enter the Nissan Z sports car in the very competitive Super GT Series as part of their NEXT transformation plan announced in May 2020.

Nissan has been carving out its path since the early Seventies when they entered motor racing in the United States, with straight wins in the SCCA C Production Series competing in an S30 240S. The Z32 300ZX would claim multiple victories in the IMSA Series during the Nineties while the Z33 evolution competed in the JGTC/Super GT Series in the 2000s, during which they ultimately claimed the Series Championship.

Nissan COO Ashwani Gupta said: “The Nissan Z GT500 symbolizes Nissan’s spirit of taking on challenges and bringing excitement to life. Through our racing efforts, we continue to innovate our cars and we race to win with the same daring we have displayed so many times over the years.”

The matt black Nissan Z GT500 presented looks very impressive, with a rather angular styling of the rear diffuser and a massive ‘hanging’ rear wing to create downforce at speed during the Super GT track stints, while at the front we find a very aggressive styling on the bumper with massive fins on the side to keep the steering wheels firmly pushed down into the track, also note the massively wider fenders both front and rear that are connected together with a clear carbon-fiber, very purposeful side sill.

President and CEO of NISMO Takao Katagiri said: “We are entering the 2022 Super GT series with our all-new Nissan Z GT500 car and our huge passion for motorsports. We hope that our fans will continue to passionately support the Nissan and NISMO motorsport teams.”

The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the Gran Turismo game series, a Japanese video game developed by studio Polyphony Digital Inc., a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, where the Vision Gran Turismo program, also known as Vision GT or even VGT has given us some of the most impressive concept cars, mostly fictional, but still utterly amazing to look at and imagine driving them … which you can do in the game naturally.

The first car that comes to mind is the 2015 Bugatti Vision GT, an absolutely stunning concept that was built as a show car to the 2015 IAA in Frankfurt, but let’s not forget the equally impressive-looking McLaren Ultimate Vision GT or the stunning Lamborghini V12 Vision Gran Turismo in her satin green livery, and now there is a new concept released.

Porsche has joined the ranks of the Vision GT program, aptly named the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo, this concept was created purely for the virtual world of the 7th edition of Gran Turismo to be released on March 4 2022 for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5, “A vehicle designed purely for the virtual world opens up exciting possibilities for us that are otherwise heavily regimented in a regular design process for a series production car,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “Projects such as the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo are particularly valuable for us in the creative process. Further developing our clearly defined Porsche Design DNA and exchanging with designers from other industries is an important part of our work.”

Porsche’s Vision Gran Turismo might be very futuristic-looking, but she does boast some very recognizable features that make her undeniably a Porsche, like the typical proportion between height and width of the design, a very low bonnet with large, round wings alongside, while the pure style of the front with the air intakes remind us of the Porsche Taycan, and yes, the Vision Gran Turismo is all-electric in case you were wondering.

At the back, we find that typical narrow strip of lights, inspired by both the 911 and the Taycan, with a very aggressive looking diffuser, no exhausts as there is no ICE engine, but note how the rear fenders, especially the section behind the rear wheels is almost carved out of the body to create a dramatic look and exposes part of the rear tires at the same time, just an amazing detail on this concept car, I really like the vertical red lights integrated into the fins of the diffuser by the way.

On the inside, the Porsche style is continued with a curved hologram display that seems to float in the thin air above the very special steering wheel, because the seats are placed so low into the body you just feel the dynamics at play, even standing still, the inside is created from carbon fiber and titanium to reduce weight and increase performance in one go, Porsche used entirely vegan materials in the concept car.

“The appeal of a Porsche comes from its purist design,” says Kazunori Yamauchi, President, Polyphony Digital. “And in terms of engineering expertise, both we and Porsche follow the same perfectionist philosophy. We share the same passion for racing and are looking to the future of the car.”

Naturally, there is a strategic advantage for Porsche to expand into the vast gaming industry. “We can engage young and digital target groups in the place where their automotive dreams are born: the world of gaming,” says Robert Ader, Vice President Marketing at Porsche AG. “The partnership with Polyphony Digital and ‘Gran Turismo’ is a perfect fit for Porsche, because motorsport – whether real or virtual – is part of our DNA.”

I guess McLaren Automotive Limited has been looking at other supercar builders, as there is yet another ‘special edition’ based on the McLaren 720S, some manufacturers really milk a certain platform to the max when it comes to releasing one-off, few-off, or limited editions, just to have more return on investment on the initial design, or just because the successor isn’t quite ready yet, whichever is the case here, there is a new McLaren Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S, and only three will be built.

Let’s first take a look at the McLaren 720S, unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as the successor to the McLaren 650S, the second model in the McLaren Super Series, with the M840 T engine, a 4-Liter twin-turbo V8 unit delivering 720 PS (or 710 hp) at 7,500 rpm, hence the 720S designation, and torque comes to 770 Nm at 5,500 rpm, acceleration to 100 km/h from standstill only takes 2.9 seconds while 200 km/h is reached within 7.8 seconds, the top speed is 341 km/h or 212 mph.

It took a little over a year for McLaren to introduce the 702S Spider as their new convertible flagship model in December 2018, unlike the coupe’s twin-hinged butterfly-style opening doors, the Spider comes with dihedral opening doors, with an increase in weight of just 45 kg over her closed counterpart, the 720S Spider was just marginally slower but did come with new 10-spoke wheels and additional color options, do note that with the top down the top speed is reduced by 16 km/h.

The McLaren 720S Spa 68 Collection, only three were built

March 2020 marked the release of the McLaren 765LT, the ‘Long Tail’ track-focused version of the 720S with increased power output and modified bodywork, but we should stick to the McLaren 720S in this article, so let’s take a look at the McLaren 720S Spa 68 Collection, a bespoke MSO order by McLaren Brussels to commemorate 50 years since Bruce McLaren secured the first Grand Prix victory for McLaren, featuring a Bespoke Anniversary Orange paint job to match the car that won the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

The McLaren 720S Le Mans Edition, one of 50 made, this one is finished in Le Mans Orange

Up next, the McLaren 720S Le Mans Edition, celebrating 25 years since the iconic McLaren F1 GTR‘s first win at the Le Mans 24 Hours, the 720S Le Mans will have only 50 cars produced worldwide, only available in two colors, Le Mans Orange, or Sarthe Grey, while these also came with a functional roof scoop inspired by the McLaren F1 GTR, bespoke 5-spoke LM wheels, and full carbon-fiber racing seats.

The McLaren 720S in bespoke MSO Gulf Oil livery

McLaren MSO department did bring out another special version, the 720S Gulf Oil livery, to celebrate their new partnership in 2020 when McLaren went on to using Gulf oils exclusively for their new cars as their lubricant supplier, a very limited number of customers could have their supercar hand-painted in the famous Gulf Oil livery, including the 720S model, a perfect match to the trademark Gulf shades of light blue and bright orange.

Now McLaren comes up with another very limited production version of their 720S, the Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S from MSO, again a special commission model, just like the Spa 68 one above, but this time a request from McLaren Melbourne and Sydney, as a celebration model for Daniel Ricciardo, the race-winning McLaren Formula 1 driver.

“We’re delighted to see the first of this exclusive series arrive in Australia, as at home on the tarmac around Albert Park as its namesake Daniel Ricciardo. Complete with the Australian flag adorning the front haunches, this special edition model is the perfect celebration of our Perth-born racer – we’re excited to see it out on Australian roads.” George Biggs, Commercial Executive Director, McLaren Automotive.

There will only be three units of the McLaren Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S made, and they are only available in Australia, hence come in RHD configuration only, each of them will be finished in Papaya spark and Burton blue, the exact colors we’ve seen on the McLaren Formula 1 2021 MCL35M race car, and each of these orange 720S will come with the number ‘3’ on the side, a nod to Ricciardo’s racing number.

“One of the great privileges of driving for McLaren is getting behind the wheel of many of the marque’s exhilarating supercars and while each offers something unique, the 720S is the absolute benchmark.” Daniel Ricciardo, Formula 1 driver, McLaren Racing, who has his signature featured on the carbon-fiber sills of each of the three Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S.

Mazzanti Automobili: The New Evantra Pura

In the world of supercars and hypercars, it has become a bit of a gimmick that manufacturers will release a car, and then, a year or two down the road, release a special, limited, or track-only version of that car. This has happened with many manufacturers from all countries, around the world. There are a few manufacturers, however, that stay dedicated to a tight model line, and each car from that model line is the absolute best it can be at the time it was built.

Mazzanti Automobili, a specialist hypercar coachbuilder and producer in Italy, is one such company. In fact, their model line is exactly three cars: The Evantra Classic, the Evantra 781, and the Evantra Millecavalli R. That is, it was three cars until October 2021, when their latest hypercar, the Evantra Pura, was unveiled to the world. Designed and manufactured without compromise, this car is set to become the next great Italian limited edition collector’s hypercar, as you will soon see.

The History Of The Evantra

The Evantra model has always been at the core of Mazzanti Automobili’s design and engineering concepts, due to the fact that the initial boxed steel frame and chrome-molybdenum cage of the 2012 prototype proved to be extremely strong. Structural rigidity was key, due to the fact that the Evantra was always meant to be a comfortable but agile and sporty two seater coupe. After testing and proving, the base model, now known as the Evantra Classic, went on sale in 2013.

As part of the whole concept of a coachbuilt hypercar, each and every vehicle was built precisely to customer specifications. The bodywork could be made out of carbon fiber, hand-wrought aluminum, or pretty much any combination of both. Each interior was made to measure, with the driver’s seat made to fit the customer’s own unique body shape, in essence making each interior a one-off, one of the core values of being coachbuilt.

Evantra (Evantra Classic)

Mazzanti Evantra Classic

The original engine for the 2013 Evantra was a GM-supplied 7.0L V8 that was stripped down to the block and rebuilt by Mazzanti’s in-house engineering department. What resulted was a 701 HP V8 that sat directly behind the cabin in a mid-mount longitudinal position, passing power through a 6-speed sequential transmission. During prototyping and testing, however, those same Mazzanti engineers were able to extract a further 50 HP from the engine, meaning the 2013 production cars left the factory with 751 horses going to the rear wheels.

With a limited production run of five cars per year, this allowed each engine to undergo stress testing and fine tuning, making each engine, like the car, a one-off in terms of its tune and timings. As such, if you were to test an Evantra Classic on a dynamometer, you would get a number close to 751 HP, but each and every car would give you a different result.

Evantra Millecavalli

Mazzanti Evantra Millecavalli

With the success of the original Evantra, Mazzanti introduced the Millecavalli, a more hardcore version of the base car, in 2016. The 7.0L GM V8 was not only stripped down to the block again, this time it was bored out to 7.2L, had new pistons to match the boring made, and just for power’s sake, had two turbochargers bolted to it. The result is the 7.2L Mazzanti Twin Turbo V8, which produces a net 1,000 HP, with 885 lb-ft, or dead on 1,200 Newton-meters, of torque.

This new engine was the basis of the Evantra Millecavalli’s name, as in Italian, Mille is “One thousand” and Cavalli is “horses,” meaning the car is literally named the Evantra One Thousand Horses. Its interior is again customized to each customer, but features a more track oriented setup, including a bespoke 6-speed sequential built only for the Millecavalli. This means that the dash provides only necessary information, and the materials are more suited to letting the driver focus on speed and handling, instead of out and out luxury.

Evantra 771

Mazzanti Evantra 771

In 2016, the next Evantra was revealed, the 771. This version was displayed at the 2016 Bologna Motor Show, and gained immediate attention. It shared the same basic lines of the Evantra, yet somehow flexed a bit more, was that little bit more aggressive, and spoke of the extra 20 HP from its 7.0 Mazzanti-reworked V8, so that it produced 771 HP.

Special features of the Evantra 771 are that it came with special, Mazzanti-only lightweight wheels from OZ Racing, shod with 255/30R20 fronts and 325/23R20 rears Pirelli P Zero tires. MacPherson struts were installed in all four corners, giving the car exceptional responsiveness and ride comfort without diluting the hypercar experience.

Brakes were increased in diameter from the Evantra, with a 380mm rotor with 6-piston calipers in the front, and 360mm rotors with 4-piston calipers in the rear. The 771 was also the first Mazzanti to offer second generation carbon-ceramic brakes, offering fade-free performance without the grabby, jerky nature of the first generation carbon-ceramics offered by many supercar manufacturers in the mid-2000s.

Evantra 781

As the Evantra 771 became more and more desirable as a hypercar, and due to the limited production of only five cars per year, the decision was made to switch the engine from the 7.0L Mazzanti-fettled V8 to another GM-supplied V8, this one being a 6.2L V8 based on the widely known LT2 Corvette engine. Of course, this engine was stripped down to the block and extensively reworked by skilled Italian engineers, and ended up producing 781 HP.

As well, the Evantra 781 changed the suspension from MacPherson struts to fully adjustable, independent double wishbone suspension at each wheel. This was done to give the 781 a more aggressive handling profile and increasing high speed stability in response to road surface imperfections.

Evantra Millecavalli R

Rear view of the Mazzanti Evantra Millecavalli R

The most recent Evantra, the Millecavalli R takes the already insane performance and handling of the Millecavalli and turns all the dials up to maximum. The 7.2L V8 was taken back to the Mazzanti engineers, and with a further boring and reworking of the tuning, is now a 7.4L Mazzanti V8 with a nigh unbelievable 1,121 HP and 892 lb-ft of torque.

The biggest difference over its brother model is that the R receives a full aerodynamic package. This is meant to be the track-only version of the Evantra, yet because of it keeping the boxed steel and chrome-molybdenum frame and cage, it is fully road legal. Also, as part of the track-oriented nature of the car, special Michelin Sport tires are made for the car.

The New 2021 Evantra Pura

Front view of the 2021 Mazzanti Evantra PuraA totally reworked front aero package increases downforce without introducing any increased drag.

In Italian, the word Pura means “pure.” For Luca Mazzanti, the man behind the name of the company, it is something he has been searching for in his cars from day one. Not purity in the sense of design or shape, but purity in the way that the car feels around the driver. Let us remember that each and every Evantra is almost a one-off due to being customized to each client, and Luca wanted something for those that remember the days of three pedals, a manual shifter, and the connection that gave, the pure exhilaration, of being completely one with the machine.

The core of this search for the purest driving experience comes with the all-new 7-speed manual transmission designed for the Evantra Pura alone. Left behind are the sequential 6- and 7-speed transmissions of the other models, as they don’t give the same connection as a gated transmission, each shift accompanied by that mechanical feeling of the lever sliding home. The clutch has also been redesigned for the car, to give superb feel and allow the driver to slip it perfectly, with a move from a dual-plate clutch package to a triple-plate clutch.

The engine is borrowed from the Evantra 781, yet as with each model, has taken a trip through Mazzanti’s in-house engineering and tuning department. What has emerged is a 6.2L V8 with a bespoke supercharger, which feeds the dual-injection-per-cylinder engine with compressed air from even the lowest revs. This, in turn, helps the V8 produce 761 HP, but more importantly, 970 Nm of torque (about 715 lbs-ft).

This pursuit of driving purity is not only down to the engine and clutch, however. The body has been extensively lightened, and the aerodynamics have been reworked with the use of computer-aided fluid dynamic simulation. These simulations were carried out by both Mazzanti and their strategic partners who help design Formula 1 and Le Mans racing cars, giving highly detailed results that let the aerodynamics be optimized for the power and speed of the car.

The Pura is also the first Evantra that will not include any aluminum body parts at all in its construction. In pursuit of that pure driving experience, the car will be made of a special weave of carbon fiber composite that has immense torsional and structural rigidity, yet is so lightweight that this Evantra produces another first, that being its dry weight of 1,280 kg (2,822 lbs), the first car weighing under 1,300 kg.

2021 Mazzanti Evantra Pura headlights and front endHood vents both cool the radiators and create a flow of air over the windshield and roof of the Evantra Pura, helping feed the hungry supercharger and create a smooth pressure layer over the aerodynamics of the car

It is this combination of factors that has led to Luca Mazzanti bestowing the name Pura onto this model. The control of a light, single clutch with three plates. A gated 7-speed manual shifter with positive and solid feel. A lighter weight body, tuned aerodynamically to provide the possible handling and high speed experience. A V8 engine with a Mazzanti-designed supercharger giving the best sound and power, a bellow of 8 cylinders matching with the soprano scream of the twin screws in the supercharger housing.

Closeup of the Mazzanti Pura exhaustWe can just imagine what the bellow of the 6.2L supercharged V8 will sound like out of those exhausts, placed so that they help increase the Venturi effect of both the diffuser and spoiler to increase downforce

The result is the most pure Evantra made. It bolts to 100 KPH (62 MPH) in 2.9 seconds and pulls strongly to a top speed in excess of 360 KPH (224 MPH). It also carries the purest of partner parts, among them Brembo second-generation carbon-ceramic discs and calipers, Tractive Suspension shocks within adjustable MacPherson struts with spherical bearings, and a Brembo-Mazzanti ABS system that, on customer request, can have an ABS deactivation button fitted to the interior.

Of course, no interior will be the same, and Luca Mazzanti, with a little knowing smile, has no intention of showing the newly redesigned interior. This is because, as with all other Mazzanti’s, there will only be five cars made per year, and he wants to have something that only clients will see, which is their own customized interior. We can’t blame him, really, as that is part of what makes Mazzanti Automobili special: Each car is bespoke to its owner, and really, it’s up to that owner to choose what they like around them as they drive without having to share it with anyone.

The Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept

Do you remember the 2013 Lamborghini Egoista? That very futuristic-looking single-seater V10 powered supercar, finished in jet fighter grey with an orange canopy that tilted upward, hinged at the front to unveil a cockpit-style seating possible with a very special steering wheel, only one of these Egoista was ever built, and it seems Nissan kept that idea in mind when they created their latest concept car: the Ariya Single Seater.

We’ve already seen images of the Nissan Ariya, an all-electric SUV based on the EV platform shared between Nissan, Mitsubishi, and the French-based Renault (remember the Nissan Qashqai is called the Rogue in the USA, but it’s a Renault Kadjar in Europe with some different styling), the Ariya will be available with either one or with two electric motors, hence in either 2WD or 4WD version, with the top of the line bringing a total power output of nearly 400 hp, but still have a range of 400 km (250 miles), there is a 243 hp version with an extended range of 500 km (310 miles).

Sadly, due to the shortage of semi-conductors, the launch of the new Nissan Ariya SUV in Europe and the United States has been postponed into 2022, but that didn’t keep Nissan from unveiling this exciting Ariya Single Seater Concept, taking the SUV’s powertrain and fitting it into a race-derived chassis, turning the family SUV into a monospace performance prototype.

Presented at the Nissan Futures event, the senior VP for global design Alfonso Albaisa was joined by Juan Manuel Hoyos, Nissan global marketing
divisional general manager for brand and engagement to show what the future of Nissan could look like in terms of all-electric performance cars, and while some design queues from the SUV can be found on this low and wide supercar, you won’t be able to fit a child seat inside this gold and black finished concept.

“We are delighted to present the Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept from our Nissan Futures event,” said Hoyos. “At Nissan, we dare to do what others don’t. With this concept, we want to showcase the high-performance potential of the Ariya’s powertrain in a motorsports-inspired package that not only hints at the design and styling of the road car that inspired it, but that also demonstrates a new and efficient EV performance language. Acting as a testbed for future technological evolution, this project can help bring excitement from the road to the race track, and also demonstrate Nissan’s expertise in transferring knowledge and technology from the race track to the road.”

The front design of the Ariya Single Seater Concept nicely integrates the ‘V’ shape found on the current road car design, but this time it’s illuminated, while the sides, which emphasize the use of carbon fiber, take the overall panel design of the Ariya SUV to the extreme, overall this concept seems to be ultra-aerodynamic, almost shaped by the wind itself.

Nissan sits at the cutting edge of EV research and design, their entry into the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship does help as an inspiration of cars like this Single Seater Concept, and while no specifications have been published on this concept, they do state it’s the two-motor setup, so let’s assume they have taken the most powerful variant, the 395 hp one, with the all-wheel-drive inside a lightweight, single-seater design … this one-off will be quick off the line, and utterly fast on the straight-line.

“Nissan competes in Formula E not only to race on the track but also to support the development of compelling electric vehicles for customers,” said Tommaso Volpe, Nissan’s global motorsports director. “Our EV programs inform our Formula E program and vice versa, allowing for road-to-track technology transfer as well as track-to-road. The Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept explores the combination of the all-electric powertrain, dual motors, and revolutionary all-wheel-drive system of the Ariya with a pure single-seat racing chassis – a powerful demonstration of just how thrilling electric vehicles could be.”
