Things Are Heating Up with These Super-Cool Sleeping Bag Shoes

style

Courtesy

You may have seen the title of this story and gotten curious. A sleeping bag shoe? What does that mean? Is it a shoe meant to be worn in my sleeping bag, or is it a shoe that resembles a mini sleeping bag? In reality, it’s neither of those things. A sleeping bag shoe is a slip-on option, most commonly found in the slide or slipper variety, that borrows sleeping bag attributes like cozy materials, warmth and softness, and combines them with rugged outsoles, water repellent coatings and durability that will keep you comfortable at camp, or inside.

Like many pieces of outdoor gear, no one knows for sure when the first shoe that featured a puffy, insulated upper and rubber outsole first came onto the scene, but we’re making the call (however bold) that they’re here to stay.

Here are seven of our top picks for this fall… and beyond.

Chaco Footwear Ramble Puff

Like a house slipper… that you can wear outside. Known by many as the reigning ruler of comfort, Chaco took things to the next level with the Ramble Puff. Water resistant ripstop nylon on the upper ensures durability, and Chaco’s Luvseat footbed provides extra cushion. Fleece lining completes the package.

Rumpl x Olukai Ulele ‘Olu Mino

Rumpl and Olukai teamed up to create an ocean-inspired slide that combines the warmth of Rumpl’s outdoor blankets and the performance of Olukai’s footwear. An EVA midsole enhances comfort and cushion, while 100 percent recycled ripstop polyester with recycled insulation supports the planet (and your feet).

TNF Thermoball Traction Mule V

To all the cold campers out there: This one is for you. TNF is known for its capable and stylish outdoor gear, and this cozy slip-on is no different. Thermoball insulation partners with a high-traction outsole to provide stability and comfort at basecamp, home or on the road.

Holden Outerwear Puffy Slide

For the sartorially minded recreationalist, Holden’s all-black Puffy Slide is the marriage of form and function. This slide features a 100 percent quilted nylon upper with DWR, recycled insulation, a PU-recycled midsole and recycled Lycra Lining, giving it a light environmental footprint (get it??) as well as a streamlined aesthetic.

Merrell Hut Moc Night Sky

This limited-release slipper is part of Merrell’s Night Sky Collection, featuring reflective qualities that mirror the night sky as the sun sets. The double-stretch gore makes slipping these on and off a breeze, and the nylon ripstop upper will stand up to any pokey plants that block your path.

Rumpl x Olukai Mahana Mino

The Mahana Mino is part of the Rumpl x Olukai collab mentioned earlier, and it’s ideal for those who want a more robust option. The shoe features Olukai’s Drop-In Heel for multiple ways to wear, along with Rumpl’s decorative stitching and cozy materials. Wear it to the beach or at basecamp, and stay warm and snug.

Teva ReEMBER

The new ReEMBER builds on Teva’s Ember Moc with functional and eco-friendly details including 100 percent recycled ripstop, rib knit and microfiber. This quilted slip-on also boasts Teva’s Rapid Resist coating to fight moisture, 50 percent recycled midsole and outsole and traceable, verifiable Repreve polyester yarn.

Amazon Is Starting Black Friday Early This Year

Looking for even more great savings? Head over to Today’s Best Deals page to see all our top deals from today.

When you head to the Epic Deals page on Amazon, you’ll see something that may put you in a bit of a tailspin: the page is already branded for the holidays. It feels like Black Friday comes earlier and earlier each year, but the beginning of October has to be a new record. This may seem a little strange, but if you’ve had your eyes on the news lately, it isn’t quite so shocking. Worldwide supply chain and shipping issues have retailers worried about product availability come December, resulting in an urgency we aren’t accustomed to seeing two and a half months before Christmas.

If you can be sure about anything, you can be sure that Amazon will be leading the way when it comes to offering up deals, and this year is no different. We’re already seeing huge savings, so we decided to highlight some of the best prices here, from now until the big day (Black Friday, that is). Check back here for updates all season long.

VW’s Coolest Piece of Forbidden Fruit Might Be Coming to America

Like many a carmaker these days, Volkswagen is placing an emphasis on SUVs in its lineup in the United States at the expense of more traditional cars. The Golf hatchback has been largely axed here, with both hatchback and station wagon disappearing to make room for the new Taos; while the rest of the world saw VW’s electric onslaught start with the ID.3 hatch, we had to wait for the ID.4 crossover; even the venerable Passat has been sunsetted here due to low sales.

There’s one small piece of the American marketplace where VW hasn’t given up on traditional cars, though: speed machines. Unlike the base Mk8 Golf, the new GTI and Golf R did make it over to our shores; a revised Jetta GLI is coming forthwith, as well. And now, it seems Volkswagen may be planning to burnish its performance lineup with another fun car: the VW Arteon R.

The regular Volkswagen Arteon, which has been on sale since early 2019, is designed to be positioned above the Passat in price and prestige — but in spite of its good looks, it never quite caught on here, in part likely because brand-conscious American buyers had trouble seeing the appeal of a four-cylinder Vee-Dub that costs about as much as a similarly-sized Audi A4.

But, rather than give up on the Arteon here, it seems VW product planners may be planning another tactic:

more power

xkcd.com

As CarBuzz recently discovered, Volkswagen has filed a patent application with the U.S. government for the bumper design of the Arteon R — the 316-horsepower, torque-vectoring version of the sleek sedan that shares its powerplant with the Golf R that’s currently only sold overseas. The patent only covers the sedan, not the even sexier station wagon version also found overseas — but considering the non-R Arteon doesn’t come in wagon form here, that’s no surprise.

Of course, there’s also a second possibility: that VW is only planning on bringing the Arteon R’s design here, in the form of a sport design package or facelift to make the sedan look cooler. Still, if there’s even a thread of hope to cling to here, we’re going to hang on tight. After all, bringing us a sultry sport sedan like the Arteon R would go a long way towards making amends for canning the SportWagen.

Water-Resistant Backpacks for Wet Commutes

style

Courtesy

Rain is no excuse for soaked belongings. Check the weather reports and pack accordingly. Many brands are making water-resistant backpacks to keep your goods safe and dry, no matter the weather. With classic, understated designs, they seem less like dry-packs and more like day packs. So prepare for unexpected weather, and peruse our favorite styles below.

Our Pick

Klettersack

Topo Designs

Big enough for all your EDC, or the bare necessities for an overnight trip, Topo Designs’ made-in-the-US Klettersack features a cinch top tucked under a water-repellent flap, straps for slimming its profile, and padded shoulders.

An upgrade

Slick Series Ballistic Backpack

Master-Piece

This rubber-like fabric is really durable nylon. Made in Japan, the design features an asymmetric zip pocket, leather detailing, padded shoulder straps and Cordura backing.

an affordable alternative

The ReNew 15″ Transit Backpack

Available in five colors, Everlane’s The ReNew Transit Backpack is made from water-resistant recycled polyester. It’s got a roll top, plenty of exterior pockets, and dividers within to keep things organized even while you’re on the go.

Field Bag

This minimalist bag has a padded laptop sleeve and an external zip pocket, and the PU-polyester blend is inspired by the Danish brand’s classic raincoats.

Dryden Backpack

Made from 1000D heavyweight nylon, this one’s obviously water-resistant, but it’s hard-wearing too: The bag’s double reinforced in most places and resists fraying, ripping or bottoming out.

Black Hole 32L

This double-entry bag allows access to your goods from the side or the top. It is cut from water-repellent rip stop fabric and features a padded back and buckled flap top.

Everyday Backpack 2.0

Lululemon’s entry isn’t the biggest of bags, but it can still fit a 16-inch laptop. Plus, it looks pleasingly plain (with plenty of performance tech embedded within).

Daypack

The North Face

Want a backpack that looks like a normal backpack — while still being completely water-resistant? The North Face’s Daypack is just that: a simple, heritage-inspired design with a water-repellent finish.

The Backpack

You know Away’s suitcases, right? I’d hope so by now; they’re everywhere. But did you know they make backpacks, too? The Backpack, as it’s so plainly called, is cut from water-resistant nylon and features three easy to access interior pockets.

Apex Backpack Explorer

Troubadour

Made from a lightweight waterproof fabric, Troubadour’s Apex Backpack has a breathable back panel and a trolley sleeve for slipping it onto a suitcase handle. It’s the ideal travel bag.

Everyday Backpack 20L Zip

Peak Design

Peak Design emphasizes versatility in everything it does. The Everyday Backpack is no exception. It has an ergonomic point of entry, a handle on the side for carrying it like a duffle and impressive durability (meaning it’s as good for days in the city as it is dirt roads).

Rogue

Made from coated ripstop fabric, this bag features three exterior pockets, a padded laptop sleeve, a lined interior and side buckle-tabs.

Davis Daypack – EPX

North St. Bags

North St. Bag’s Davis Daypack comes constructed from Ecopak EPX sailcloth, a recycled polyester-derived waterproof material. It has a roll top to keep the elements out and exterior pockets for easy access to valuables.

Wool Hats to Wear This Fall

wool baseball caps

Gear Patrol

I won’t even try to convince you baseball caps work in winter. It’s far too cold out for them by then. Beanies are your best bet. But, in spring, summer, and even fall, baseball caps are perfect, ideal, and acceptable, in that order. You can get away with normal cotton or nylon ones — the kind’s bikers and baseball players wear — in the warmer months, but woolen ones are a necessary upgrade in autumn.

But don’t cling too hard to them, even if you’re someone who claims to be immune to the cold. Take advantage of the window we’re entering: when it’s warm enough that your ears won’t freeze but cold enough to warrant some kind of hat. These fit the bill (pun intended), and most make a colorful statement to boot.

Baseball Caps for Fall

Charmar Cap

A Kind of Guise

The brand says this cap’s campfire-inspired, but I’d argue it looks a bit more like an old, well-worn flannel. Either way, it’s autumnal for sure and made from 100-percent wool.

Wool Five-Panel Baseball Cap

Worried about overspending on something you won’t end up wearing? Go with Madewell’s five panel cap. It’s under $40 bucks and available in three colors.

Wool Sports Cap

Norse Projects

Norse Projects’ Wool Sports Cap looks reminiscent of early varsity jackets, when they were gray sweaters with crimson Hs on them. This is obviously an N, but it’s knit just the same.

NY Black Yankees Wool Hat

Ebbets Field Flannels

The New York Yankees cap is the best-selling hat in all of baseball. This isn’t that Yankees, but rather the Black Yankees from the Negro Leagues. Ebbets Field Flannels made this one to honor them.

Houndstooth Baseball Cap

This classic Houndstooth cap comes via J. Crew, for under $50 bucks, too, if I may add.

Joe McCoy Wool Baseball Cap

The Real McCoy’s

The coolest thing about this baseball cap by Japanese repro brand, The Real McCoy’s, is the message stitched onto the back, as if it were done by someone’s grandma ahead of a big game: “Go #50! Please remain on bleachers ’til game is over.”

Baseball Cap

Another made-in-Japan option, H.W. Dog’s retro-tinged Baseball Cap comes with a leather adjuster on the back and woolen, vintage “D” on the front.

Jacquard Baseball Cap

If you’re going to do it, why not do it big? Missoni’s Jacquard Baseball Cap is doing it big. Its all-over pattern is muted enough, however, as to blend in with other outfits. It doesn’t look as zany on as you’d think.

Six Panel Wool Cap

Yes, Viberg makes boots, but the brand’s T-shirts and hats hold their own. They’re made with the same commitment to quality and durability, and, of course, classic design.

Houndstooth Baseball Cap

Officine Générale

Officine Générale further blends prep and ivy styles — they’re already interchangeable in many ways — with this Houndstooth patterned, logo appliquéd Baseball Cap.

Honus Cap

From afar, this is a fine, fairly simple cap. Up close, you notice a few things: it’s made by Visvim, cut from 100-percent wool, and fitted. There are two sizes, small/medium and large/extra-large.

They feature straps made from zero-water leather and post-consumer plastics. The collection includes the sporty Time-Tide Compass, a classic day/date, the Field Post 41, & the compact Field Post 36.

Here’s How Porsche May Build the Next 718 Cayman

Like many a car brand these days, Porsche is going electric — mostly. We’ve seen their all-new electric sedan, the Taycan, which is already outselling the Panamera. Porsche’s most popular car, the Macan SUV, will convert to electric power for its next-generation in 2023. And the brand has dropped heavy hints that the entry-level 718 Cayman and Boxster sports cars would follow suit. Now, the sleuths over at Autocar have some new details about how that may happen.

According to their report, Porsche will design a new bespoke platform for the 718 Cayman and Boxster using an “e-core” layout. This platform would locate the batteries behind the driver and in front of the rear axle to mimic the weight distribution of a mid-engine car. Not using the common skateboard setup would permit the cabin to be lower, and reduce drag.

We may have already seen a preview of what the next-generation 718 Cayman and Boxster will look like: Porsche revealed an “ultra-compact” Mission R concept in September (seen above) that looked at the future of customer motorsport. Autocar suggests that the concept may show off proportions and design elements that could make their way to a production electric 718.

Building an EV from scratch and producing new electric SUVs will be one challenge. But a key challenge for Porsche — and one that may be on another order of difficulty — will be converting its sports cars like the 718 and 911. Raw performance won’t be enough. The electric sports cars will need to capture the feel, engagement and driving dynamics that are an imperative part of the Porsche sports car experience. And Porsche must do so in a way that doesn’t feel contrived or anachronistic. Cars like the 718 and, eventually, the 911 may require more time (and battery technology advancements) to electrify.

It’s not yet clear what Porsche’s timeline is for an electric 718 Cayman and Boxster. Car and Driver reported back in May that Porsche was working on a Boxster EV concept on a yet-to-be-announced platform. Though that concept has yet to emerge and there could be a significant lag between the concept and production versions.

Treat Yourself To A Spa On Lake Geneva At The Löyly Floating Sauna

You don’t have to work up a sweat just to enjoy a few minutes inside a sauna room. Why not swim your way towards it. That’s the concept behind the Löyly floating sauna from Lausanne University of Art and Design graduate Trolle Rudebeck Haar. This prefabricated floating structure was Harr’s Diploma Project at Lausanne University of Art and Design (ÉCAL) in Switzerland.

It sits floating on the Lake of Geneva, constructed on top of a floating pontoon deck fitted with hollow barrels for buoyancy. The buoyancy lets the structure float on other bodies of water with low wave motion such as pools, ports, lagoons, and ponds. The Löyly floating sauna used prefabricated elements so it can be easily taken apart and re-assembled. It used Swiss Douglass fir treated with teak oil for outdoor durability. The structure is accessible via a perched ladder on the side. Then a traditional Japanese sliding door called shōji opens to a 2.2-square-meter space. It is lightweight, easily slides aside, and can block wind and steam from living the area.

Meanwhile, ribbed translucent glass comprises the tallest walls for natural light to penetrate inside while providing privacy. It also has a sloped roof made with corrugated polycarbonate and inside is a wooden bench that can host up to three people. A wooden stove sits on the far side where it holds the hot rocks or charcoal. For those who just want to bask in the beauty of the surrounding scenery, a deck is placed around the exterior of the Löyly floating sauna where they can sit and relax.

Live From Instagram: How One Vintage Seller Found Community in Commerce

Meet charismatic T-shirt seller, Sean Flynn, and his Pittsburgh store, Monarch Studios. It’s a modest brick-and-mortar, but big online. Through personality and quality picking he’s grown his Instagram page — largely dedicated to vintage wrestling, music, and movie T-shirts — from a meager couple hundred followers to over 21,000 in a little over a year. “Really only since quarantine started,” he explains.

“[The storefront] was open for a calendar year, and then COVID hit,” he continues. “And in my head I’m thinking, ‘This is going to get bad very quickly, and I’m not prepared from an online standpoint to keep the business afloat,’ because I was relying strictly on in-store traffic… But I started prepping. We hopped on immediately and started building the website out. I knew I had to transition online and fully commit myself to this.”

The pandemic forced his hand. For Flynn, his options were to fold under the pressure and shelve his passion project for a period or push forward.

“I did a pretty massive giveaway with the first initial website drop,” he recalls. “And to be totally honest, we did similar numbers then to the highest numbers we’d ever done in the store. I stepped back and was like, ‘OK, this is going to work out.'”

sean

Monarch Studios

But the initial hype of a new site subsided, and he was hard at work enticing new shoppers once more. Then, a friend, Chris (aka @1980somethingco), created the Virtual Flea (@thevirtualflea). It was similar to QVC in the way it presented products to a live audience: a host introduces a vendor, they introduce an item, give you its specs, and then tell you what it’s selling for. But, with one catch: there’s one of each and it’s up for auction. Bidders purchase a badge — an icon that appears next to your username — as a means of verification and then drop bids in the chat. The host account can pin them as they overtake the current top offer. Flynn joined the first few and saw an opportunity to do something smaller for his core community.

Flynn hosted his first Thursday Night Live on the Monarch Studios account with a few close friends four weeks later. For them, it was a way to reconnect to the part of selling T-shirts they enjoyed most: face-to-face interactions.

“My favorite thing about selling in person is the customer experience: talking to someone, putting a smile on someone’s face. When you’re doing things online, it’s difficult to get that feeling. The live was an opportunity to blend both worlds and meet new people. Every Thursday for close to 40 weeks straight we ran these,” Flynn says. “At first with just me and Bobby but then I started getting an influx of DMs asking, ‘Can I come on the Live? How can I be a part of this?’ It was so cool because these were mostly people that I looked up to in the space. And plenty of new accounts that I was excited to check out, too.”

instagram

Courtesy

A healthy dose of both became regular guests on the series, stopping in as their schedules allowed. Some owned shops in other parts of the cities, while others were from different countries. Flynn estimates over 100 accounts have taken part. 100 times that have tuned in. (You do the math: over 40 shows with roughly 500 viewers each time.)

And with interest comes income. (Isn’t that how the saying goes?) Like Flynn, larger companies have found success through “livestream shopping,” too. NTWRK, an app-first retailer, claims to “seamlessly blend entertainment and commerce” by offering its “global audience unprecedented access to exclusive products from world-renowned artists, brands, and personalities.” You open the app, tune in to the videos, and shop whatever’s being sold. They’ve packaged the experience in a more polished way — kudos to Popshop Live, which has as well and with less corporatism plaguing the experience — and have expanded beyond vintage: inventory is both new and old, and includes everything from tees, art and furniture to food, trading cards, and toys.

Flynn’s done around 10 Popshop Live shows — no NTWRK shows, yet — and they’ve served him well, he says. But nothing’s been more impactful than his auctions on Instagram, both for him and the sellers he shares the stage with. They’ve seen auctions start at $1 and finish at $750. A few more have hit for over $1,000.

“At the end of the day, these aren’t about the money,” Flynn says, referencing his Thursday Night Lives. They were originally a way of keeping his business afloat during COVID, but now that fleas, markets, and conventions have returned in-person, they’re really about supporting his community — even if he’s recovered enough to stop hosting them. “But if it means it can support other people and other sellers, that’s super cool to me. If I get a message after someone’s on a Live and they’re like, ‘Man, I really appreciate you. We were able to pay the rent for the month,’ that’s a game changer, you know? That’s what it’s really about.”

Buffy Puffer Blanket

buffy puffer blanket

Buffy

Buffy’s latest release doesn’t need to be trapped in the bedroom. The new Puffer Blanket is a quilted throw made from recycled polyester and eucalyptus for a crisp, cool and comfortably wrapping experience. While you may enjoy using this in the bed or in the living room, its machine-washable and spill-resistant qualities make this a wonderful picnic blanket, too. Plus, those four muted colors are just really, really nice.

Sackville & Co. Crystal Ball Pipes

vibrant crystal ball pipe

Sackville & Co.

Sackville & Co. isn’t like your typical cannabis accessories brand. For one, it doesn’t sell a bunch of Marley-inspired gear. Second, it’s a female-founded brand and well-designed products are its cup of tea. The new Crystal Ball Pipe is meant to double as home decor, so you don’t need to hide it away when you have guests over — parents will probably dismiss it as abstract art. It features an orb smoking vessel and a glass base, available in four colors: pink, black, blue and amber.
