20 Closet Essentials Under $20

closet essentials

Courtesy

I’m a fan of building your wardrobe slowly and with consideration for prerequisites like quality and the timelessness of the design. Simply put, do whatever you can to avoid overfilling your closet with fast fashion impulse purchases.

There are, however, auxiliary parts that play a pivotal role: things like irons or garments bags that aren’t clothes but live in your closet nonetheless. They’re important. If you drip some sauce on your shirt or shoes, you’re going to need the necessary tools to clean them up — beyond the napkin you use to blot the spot in the interim.

This is a list of these kinds of odd-ball essentials: the bits and pieces that complete your closet and make you ready for whatever comes at you; even if it’s just more new shirts or sneakers. Best of all, everything here is under $20 dollars.

Wooden Hangers (10-Pack)

Quality Hangers

Go on, get yourself a good set of hangers. These are made from mahogany and come in packs of 10.

Crew Socks (2-Pack)

Sure, this purchase won’t spoil you with a set of two dozen socks, but this two-pack from Gap comes with better ones, meaning they won’t wear out after just one wear.

Knit Cuffed Beanie

I love Carhartt’s simple knit beanie. It beats out so many others, and it only costs $17.

50/50 Crewneck T-Shirt (2-Pack)

American Apparel

Two fine T-shirts from American Apparel for $15? That’s a steal, but especially since you can choose from a dozen different colors.

Disinfectant Spray (2-Pack)

Smelly shoes might not be as much of an issue in the winter, but long work days or wet liners all but guarantee a little odor — kill it, and the bacteria that caused it, with Microban’s sanitizing spray.

Dryer Balls

Serena & Lily

Wool dryer balls reduce wrinkles and matting without artificial fragrances. Plus, they’re reusable.

‘Repel’ Shoe Protectant Spray

Jason Markk

Keep your shoes clean for longer with a waterproofing spray. Jason Markk’s Repel formula protects all types of materials.

Wonder Balsam

Dr. Martens

Dr. Martens’ balsam works well on all types of boots — not just Docs. Massage it in to restore your leather, no matter its current state.

Suede Cleaning Kit

Jason Markk

Cleaning other sneakers might be easy. Suede? Not so much. Turn to a specialized kit — this one comes from sneaker expert Jason Markk, too — as to not ruin them.

Cedar Shoe Tree

Shoes rely on trees in order to retain their shape. That’s not true with all types, but it could never hurt to slip them into your favorite pair.

The Wrinkle Releaser

In a rush but your clothes are all embarrassingly wrinkled? Turn to a releaser. There are more voluminous options available from big box stores, but Frey’s is formulated with a surprisingly pleasant and complex scent.

63″ Shoelaces

You should always keep an extra pair of laces on hand — well, not with you but certainly in your sock drawer.

Fitted Face Mask

Herschel Supply Co.

Masks aren’t over. As such, it’s always good to have an extra one. Hang it in your closet somewhere so you always know where it is. Oh, and wash it occasionally, please?

Microfiber Boxer Briefs (4-Pack)

Fruit of the Loom

Big pack basics are usually bad: that goes for socks, T-shirts, and especially boxers. They stretch after a few wears, pill, and rip. These microfiber boxer briefs by Fruit of the Loom are super nice for being a four-pack — and only $14.99.

Instant Stain Remover (3-Pack)

Stock up on Tide To Go sticks while you can. This three-pack is only ~$2 a stick, which means you can stab out stains for years to come (or only a few weeks if you’re really messy).

Garment Bag

Liberty Bags

This garment bag certainly isn’t flashy, but it’s not flimsy either. It’s made from nylon, meaning it won’t rip like your linen ones.

‘Essential’ Shoe Cleaning Kit

Jason Markk

Remember what I said about cleaning sneakers? Answer: It’s easy — especially if you have a kit full of the necessary equipment.

Sewing Kit

This sewing kit might seem extreme for most men. But, it has every single you could need to repair rips or burn holes in tops or bottoms. Plus, it has threads in every color, if you’re considering an artistic repair job.

Lens Wipes (200-Pack)

Wear glasses? Sunglasses? Surely you’ve encountered a messy lens. Cut through grease, grime and other smudges with pre-moistened, individually packaged wipes from Zeiss. You get 200 of ’em for $12.

20mm Replacement Buttons (12-Pack)

No sartorial accident proves more dangerous than a disappeared button. Bye, pants! But not if you have a set of replacements ready. These hammer together, making them capable of replacing a missing set or establishing a new hole altogether.

The Complete Buying Guide to Longines Watches

Welcome to Brand Breakdown, a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you won’t find on the average About page.

Longines is one of the nineteen watch manufacturers that comprise the massive Swatch Group. Located in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, the brand produces luxury watches with a modern internal inventory and part delivery system — it leverages its automation in conjunction with traditional watchmaking to produce nearly two million watches annually.

There are over 1,200 different models in the Longines catalog, though that number does take into account that every strap option or dial color variation results in a different SKU. This number of models available allows Longines to serve the diverse tastes of global markets — the brand achieves an enormous market presence by strategically positioning its watches at a price point within the Swatch Group below Omega and above Tissot.

Longines currently concentrates its sports sponsorships to alpine skiing, archery, and equestrian sports, with brand ambassadors such as Kate Winslet, Mikaela Shiffrin, and Andre Agassi. The combination of high-profile partnerships, the volume of luxury watches produced, and the winged hourglass logo make the Longines brand recognizable around the world.

Longines’ History

The history of Longines starts long before a list of mergers leading to the Swatch Group. The Swiss watch manufacturer was founded in 1832, and their breakthrough in watchmaking came in 1878 through developing the first chronograph watch movement, the caliber H20. (The H20 features start, stop, and reset functions controlled by a single monopusher in the crown.) By 1886 Longines was supplying pocket watches with chronograph complications that could be used to time professional-level sporting events, which began their connection with equestrian sports.

Longines began the transition from pocket watches to wristwatches in 1913 with the 29mm reference 13.33Z, a chronograph. In 1919, just post-World War I, Longines was named the official watch supplier to the International Aeronautical Federation as aviation gained popularity. During World War II, the brand was one of twelve companies contracted by the British Ministry of Defense to manufacture the W.W.W. (Watch, Wrist, Waterproof) for British soldiers, which are collectively known today as the “Dirty Dozen.” During these early decades of the 20th century, famous Longines wearers included theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, legendary actor Humphrey Bogart, and aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.

In the 1970s, Longines resisted manufacturing quartz watch movements and instead developed ultra-thin mechanical movements. These thin movements bridged the gap until Longines joined the Societe Suisse de Microelectronique et d’Horlogerie (SMH) in 1983 — the conglomerate that would continue to evolve into the Swatch Group.

Longines maintains detailed numerical records by the serial number of every watch that they have produced, and owners can request “Certificate of Authenticity” and/or an “Extract from the Archives” for detailed information about their timepiece. (This process is detailed on the Longines website.) Interestingly, the brand’s winged hourglass logo continues to be the oldest registered trademark in the world that is still being used for its original purpose.

Below, we’ve included a guide to each model line within the collection as well as several standout models.

The Elegance Collection

DolceVita (Ref. L5.767.4.71.0)

For those who can’t seem to find the right sized Cartier tank, the DolceVita provides a compelling alternative. There are many dial configurations available, with the silver flinqué dial being the standout. (Flinqué is a method of patterned dial engraving.) Note the clean edges of the printed Roman Numeral hour indices and the LONGINES branding on the dial.

Watchmaking Tradition

The Longines Master Collection (Ref. L2.793.8.78.3)

The Longines Master Collection is a great entry point into luxury precious metal timepieces, and it delivers with a punch — there’s no gold plating here. The ref L2.793.8.78.3 specifically is solid pink gold, and at 40mm, it’s both wearable and dapper. The brand calls the unique texture on the dial “barleycorn.”

The 40mm Longines 1832 reference L4.826.4.92.2 features a beige dial that appears cream in a certain light. To reinforce the traditional Swiss design, Longines positioned the moon phase complication at six o’clock, which is complemented by the small hand pointer date. The Longines 1832 automatic movement has a 72-hour power reserve and can be visually appreciated through the display case back.

The Longines Heritage Classic Chronograph (Ref. L2.830.4.93.0)

The Longines Heritage Classic Chronograph features a tuxedo (black and white) dial that balances the two sub dials — a running seconds at three o’clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter — at nine o’clock using a bicompax layout. Historically inspired features of the Heritage Classic Chronograph include blued steel subdial hands and an international tachymeter scale on the outer dial. The multi-layer anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal is a noted modern touch.

Avigation

When thinking about flight-inspired watches, multi-time zone and circular slide rule timepieces often come to mind, though Longines takes a different approach. The Avigation collection of watches breaks down the pilot’s watch into a simpler format, while the three Avigation subcategories are highly legible and focus on the pre-jet era. These classic timepieces combine vintage styling with modern robustness. Many of the watches in the Avigation collection have vintage Longines counterparts.

Longines Spirit (Ref. L3.810.4.03.2)

The matte green dial with five stars is nicknamed the “IKE” and is the favorite among the Spirit sub-collection. However, the Longines Spirit is also available with black, blue, or silver dials as well. It also has a quick-change leather strap or you can purchase the watch on a bracelet for an extra $250. 42mm versions are available if you prefer a larger watch.

The Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale

The Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale pays tribute to the Longines reference 5774, a watch issued to the Marine Nationale (French Navy) by Longines starting in the late 1940s. Today the case diameter of the Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale has been increased from 33mm to 38.5mm for modern tastes, though it preserves the mid-century military ethos.

The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7 1935

The Longines Avigation Type-A7 1935 chronograph is a timepiece that you would see in the very early days of aviation. The most striking feature of the design is the 45-degree offset on the dial, which comes from a pilot’s need to read the time quickly without removing their hands from the aircraft’s yoke. The single-push piece chronograph pusher emanates from traditional pocket watch designs that contained a chronograph complication.

Diving

Longines’ Diving collection offers both modern and vintage-inspired dive options that appeal to diverse aesthetic preferences. Along with the distinct dive watch models available, there are different colors and sizes available, particularly in the HydroConquest line. Within the HydroConquest line, Longines offers both three-handers and chronographs, all with 300m of water resistance. Swiss manufactured quartz and mechanical movement are both offered, and the collection consists primarily of stainless steel cases with a few models that have gold-colored PVD coating for a two-tone look.

HydroConquest (Ref. L3.741.4.96.6)

The HydroConquest is a tremendous value in the Swiss sports luxury timepiece category. In a trend of oversized dive watches, Longines produces a refreshing 39mm version of it, though it only comes with an aluminum bezel insert. (The 41mm Hydroconquest is offered with either aluminum or ceramic bezel insert — a 43mm black ceramic version is also available for $3,725.) All HydroConquest watches are fully capable in the water, with dive extensions on the bracelets and a generous abundance of Swiss Super-LumiNova® treatment on the dial.

The Longines Legend Diver Watch (Ref. L3.774.4.50.2)

Many luxury Swiss watch manufacturers are currently offering bronze models, and the golden-colored case over a green dial of the Legend Diver is certainly on-trend. The Legend Driver’s bronze case will age over time developing a unique patina for each owner, though it features a titanium case back to keep the bronze’s oxidation off your wrist. The dual crowns are functional: One sets the timekeeping, and the other crown rotates the internal dive flange to measure elapsed time. Longines includes an additional NATO-style strap with the watch.

As a bonus, it’s the same price on a bracelet, rubber strap, or leather strap, though the best value is in the bracelet version. Just about any 22mm strap is going to look great if you feel the need to switch it up.

Performance

Longines doesn’t purely focus on its rich back catalog for inspiration — the company is also introducing luxury timepieces with modern designs and features. Longines centers the Performance collection around the Conquest derivative, which is divided into three very distinctive sub-categories: The Conquest Classic is a contemporary design with a mid-size case, which you’ll recognize because its case shape is similar to that of the HydroConquest. Remove the Hydro and you are left with Conquest, a similar watch without the diving mastery. The third Performance sub-category is the V.H.P (Very High Precision), all of which feature quartz movements with an extraordinary level of accuracy.

Conquest Classic (Ref. L2.387.0.57.6)

The 36mm Longines Conquest Classic glistens in a gender-neutral and pleasing package, with forty-five Top Wesselton diamonds set around the inside of the bezel. What makes this Longines Conquest Classic unique is the black ceramic outer bezel for added strength and durability. In addition to the bezel, this the dial is highlighted by eleven Top Wesselton diamonds on the hour indices.

Conquest (L3.777.4.76.6)

Models like the Conquest are in line with Longines’ initiatives for an appeal to a vast audience. This model is Longines’ purest form of its modern design language: Once the dive watch design elements are stripped away, the result is a clean and modern luxury timepiece. The Conquest offers dials in classic colors (silver, black, blue, and mother of pearl). In addition, Longines offers five case sizes (29.5, 34, 39, 41, and 43mm) as well as mechanical movements. However, the quartz Conquests are a mere $800, providing a compelling entryway into luxury timepieces.

(Very High Precision) makes a sound case for the category of elite luxury travel watches: The user can easily swap between home and travel time with a simple push of the crown. More complex functions can be easily set using Longines’ V.H.P. GMT Flash app — your mobile device flashes a code using its LED light to transmit home and travel time zones to a sensor on the dial. Further, the Conquest V.H.P. is accurate to +/- 5 seconds per year.

The 2021 Lexus LX 570 Is a Solid, Dependable Dinosaur

Like a blast from the past. Upon climbing into the LX 570 for the first time, I went through my usual new-test-car ritual: repositioning the seat, steering wheel and mirrors, setting my radio presets, plugging in my iPhone and setting up Apple CarPlay…only to find myself stymied at that step, because the LX 570 doesn’t have Apple CarPlay. It’s one of the few cars left on sale today that don’t — and not because, like Tesla and Rivian, they have a corporate desire to avoid it, but just because the damn truck is so old. (Again, perspective: when Lexus launched the LX 570, the iPhone hadn’t even gone on sale yet.)

That alone might be enough reason to wait for the LX 600 for some; after all, the LX 570’s infotainment system is hardly best-in-class (although thankfully, it integrates touchscreen tech in addition to Lexus’s accursed targeting reticule touchpad), and smartphone integration remains one of the biggest breakthroughs in in-car navigation since, well, digital in-car navigation. But if you prefer paper maps and CDs to Google Maps and Spotify (oh, yes, the LX still has a CD player), you likely won’t mind the setup once you get used to it.

One feature that I certainly won’t complain about: the plethora of physical buttons. Sure, they’re a little busy in places — the mess of buttons, knobs and toggles below the shift lever looks straight out of a 747 — but there’s no worrying about diving into digital menus and submenus to change drive settings, climate control functions, or volume or music channel. Indeed, once you’ve set your radio presets, you might only need to use the infotainment screen once in a blue moon.

On the comfort and space side, there’s little to complain about, as you’d expect from a Lexus with a price tag closing in on six figures. The seats are supportive and pleasant even on a six-hour drive, and there’s plenty of room to spread out. Of course, all that only applies to the first two rows, not the token fold-away third one that’s practically a throwback to the days of jump seats; folded up, they take up an unpleasant chunk of the cargo bay, while folded down, they’re only good for small people and short trips. Lexus offers the LX 57o in two-row, five-passenger form as well; I highly recommend taking them up on that.

Apple’s New MacBook Pros Are Bigger Than Their Predecessors. Here’s Why

Apple’s new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros are exciting new laptops, to say the least. They’re significantly more powerful (and power-efficient) than previous MacBook Pros; they have a bigger, nicer edge-to-edge display; and they mark the return of a number of “Pro” features, such as a row of physical function keys — sorry, Touch Bar — and a lot more ports than just USB-C, so you won’t need a zillion adapters to connect all your devices.

There’s one thing the new MacBook Pros do sacrifice for all this: size. Just as the latest iPhones and Apple Watch have sacrificed being the thinnest products possible (which Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief product designer who’s since gone on to help out at Ferrari, was well-known for) in favor of performance, the new MacBook Pros are — thanks to their new chassis designs and added ports, among other factors — both larger and heavier than the computers they replace.

But by how much?

tech roundup
The above is a size comparison between the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro (2020, left), the new 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021, center) and the new 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021, right).

Apple

As you can see by the above graphic, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021) is slightly thicker and deeper than last year’s 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro (2020), but it’s also half a pound heavier — which is the thing you’re likely to feel most. Of course, the main reason for the size bump is that the new 14-inch MacBook Pro is in fact a bigger computer. It not only has a more edge-to-edge (thinner bezels), but the screen is larger too: 14.2-inches versus 13.3-inches.

The increased display size is the primary thing causing the new MacBook Pro to be a bigger and heavier machine than its predecessor, but the addition of more ports and a new keyboard aren’t making it any lighter. The battery size likely isn’t factor in adding weight, as the 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021) and the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020) is still rated at the same 17 hours.

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) is the first big-screen laptop with Apple silicon; the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro, released in 2019, packed an Intel processor. So you can expect the new model to get the big upgrades in performance and power efficiency that we’ve come to expect out of an Apple chipset — but it, also, is slightly beefier. The new 16-inch MacBook Pro is just under half a pound heavier — 0.4 pounds to be exact — than the 2019 model.

The new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros will be available on Tuesday (October 26), but you can preorder them now from Apple’s website. The 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro start at $1,999 and $2,499, respectfully.

Automotive enthusiasts around the globe have been eagerly waiting for updates regarding the Mercedes-AMG One. The hybrid hypercar was unveiled in 2017 to commemorate the badge’s 50th anniversary. None other Lewis Hamilton was on hand to show off what was deemed a concept at the time. After missing the original production schedule in 2019, it’s finally on track for 2022.

We can only imagine what it’s like to be one of the privileged clients who reserved a unit back then. After years of virtually no news regarding progress, you finally receive an email from the renowned German marque. Sources reveal the correspondence was to let them know about plans to fire up the assembly line by the middle of next year.

Hamilton was the face behind the launch for a good reason. Mercedes-AMG is borrowing technology from its Formula 1 division for this machine. The hypercar will pack a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine augmented with a powerful electric motor. The manufacturer says output should be north of 1,000 horsepower.

This hybrid setup endows the One with race-ready capabilities in a road-legal form. Regular track tests show staggering performance such as a breakneck 0-124 mph in less than six seconds. Meanwhile, the top speed should be around 217 mph. Take note that these numbers are not yet final as Mercedes-AMG engineers are likely to add upgrades.

If you were among the many who were still on the fence when reservations were open, too bad! All 275 examples of the Mercedes-AMG One are already spoken for. Currently, it’s not clear if more slots will open in the future given its exclusivity.

This Sustainable New Denim Is Made From Nettle

pangaia

Pangaia

PANGAIA has pushed for foundational transformation since its inception in 2018. The material innovation company, which moonlights as a clothing brand, wants to reshape several apparel categories with an emphasis on “high-tech naturalism,” a model that calls for using materials naturally abundant instead of those we’ve over industrialized.

So, where’s the tech come in, you’re asking? PANGAIA creates all of the processes and chemistries required to transform these raw materials into functional textiles. Instead of using cotton alone for their new line of denim, for example, they sourced naturally strong Himalayan nettle instead, a material traditionally used for rugs, and blended it with cotton for the new PANGAIA jeans (and jean jacket), which are out now.

“Pangaia is a material science company, so we’re very much driven by innovation,” says Dr. Amanda Parkes, PANGAIA’s chief innovation officer and lead scientist. “We have chosen lifestyle basics for the core of the brand, and we’re motivated to move into different categories more on what innovations are ready and what categories do they belong in, and less like a top down approach.”

Dr. Parkes is talking about sweatpants, T-shirts and sweatshirts — soft, plush basics made from organic cotton primarily. But PANGAIA’s piloted plenty more new materials, too, on a plethora of products: T-shirts made from banana and pineapple waste, graphic inks made from air pollution, sneakers made from grape leather, down jackets filled with wildflowers, to name a few. The jeans, available in two styles, high-rise straight leg and mid-rise straight leg, are just another notch in the company’s metaphorical belt. But why? Aren’t there enough stabs at sustainable jeans already out there?

Fashion-forward yet free from petroleum-based materials.

“We definitely live in this realm of ‘What are the basic essentials?’ and making sustainable versions of those,” Dr. Parkes explains. “The idea of moving into denim was always part of our core brand value system.” The launch was always penciled into their calendar and could come once the innovation was cleared and tested and the design hashed out by someone with experience working in the denim world — cue ex-Levi’s SVP of design, Jonathan Cheung.

He’s an industry veteran — stints at Levi’s, Unspun, Bolt Threads, Gap and now Pangaia included — with a clear focus on designing for the future; that means creating products that are both better-wearing and better for the planet. PANGAIA’s new jeans, the denim design director explains, improve upon current options by avoiding elastane and spandex, employing nettle, a fabric roughly 10 times stronger than hemp (which is already significantly stronger than cotton), and sticking to a traditional design theory.

Both pairs of PANGAIA’s debut jeans are “straight-leg pants, basically,” as Cheung puts it. But there are finer details that reference the ins and outs of denim manufacturing. Made on a loom with a left-hand denim twill construction to counteract the rigidity of the nettle, these have a soft hand-feel and what Cheung calls a “left-hand design language.” The coin pocket’s on the left and there’s a text block tag on the left, too — two features historically saved for the right side of the pants.

Selvedge jeans made sustainably.

The nettle also forced PANGAIA to use selvedge denim. Too tough for newer machines, they went on older shuttle looms, in collaboration with Italy’s Candiani Denim. Complete with their own signature irregularities, what Cheung says experts refer to as “loom chatter,” the jeans show signs of being made slowly — and, of course, with sustainability front of mind.

The jeans are finished on Candiani’s state-of-the-art dying machines, which save both water and dye. Because the fiber’s hollow — like a squished straw, Cheung analogizes — it proves breathable in the summer and insulating in the winter, making it more wearable than most 13-ounce jeans. And that’s what’s most important: You can wear them, and for a long time. In a category rife with greenwashing, Pangaia’s made transparently sustainable and super durable denim approachable. Each pair costs $225, while the jacket costs $295. And although demand may outmatch supply at first, there’s plenty more nettle to transform into denim — and PANGAIA’s overseeing the process into the future.

“The denim jean is the most democratic, inclusive, hard-wearing, long-lasting, and culturally influential piece of clothing in all human history,” Cheung explains. “No other piece of clothing has been worn for so long, by so many people and I’d argue that a simple pair of jeans is the coolest piece of clothing you can own, too. Our work has been like farm-to-table, starting at the plant level to make even better, unique denim. This is just the beginning. We’re literally growing our future jeans right now.”

Everything You Need to Know About Apple’s New MacBook Pros

Just over a month after Apple’s first big fall hardware event, where it announced the iPhone 13 lineup, the Apple Watch Series 7, and two new iPads, the Cupertino tech giant has just held another one. This second hardware event — titled “Unleashed” — was dedicated primarily to Apple’s new and improved line of MacBook Pros and the hardware that drives them, as well as new third-generation AirPods (and some new ways to interact with Apple Music).

Here’s what you need to know.

There are brand-new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros

ap

Apple

Apple’s biggest announcement: two new redesigned MacBook Pros that take advantage of the company’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets (see below) and have larger, more edge-to-edge displays, complemented by bezels that are 60 percent thinner than before. Each display is Liquid Retina XDR and supports ProMotion (120Hz refresh rate), both firsts for a Mac.

There are a few other big differences with the new Pros. They lose the controversial Touch Bar and replace it with a row of physical function keys. They have a lot more port options (meaning you likely won’t need any adaptor); there’s a new MagSafe charging port, two USB-C ports, a HDMI port, a SD card slot and a 3.5mm jack that supports high-impedance headphones. Apple also improved the speaker systems and microphones, and gave the new Pros a 1080p webcam (but there’s now also an iPhone-esque notch on the display).

The 14-inch Pro starts at $1,999 and the 16-inch Pro starts at $2,499. They come in either space gray or silver. Both are available for preorder now and will ship next week.

Meet the 3rd-Generation AirPods

Apple also announced its third-generation AirPods at the event. They look pretty identical to the existing AirPods Pro and have some of the same features, including support for spatial audio with dynamic head tracking and adaptive EQ, but lack the active noise-cancellation. They do have the best battery life of any AirPods to date, at six hours per earbud. And they have a built-in magnet so they work better with a MagSafe charger (although this won’t impact the charging speed). These third-generation cost cost $179, are available for preorder now — and will ship next week.

In addition, Apple has reduced the price of the second-generation AirPods from $159 to $129.

Apple

Apple also revealed the next-generation version of its M1 chipset that powers its new super-strong computers. There are actually two options: the M1 Pro and the M1 Max. Both new chipsets are significantly more powerful than the previous M1 chipset: the M1 Pro has a 70% percent faster CPU, 2x faster GPU and supports up to 32GB of RAM; the M1 Max adds to that by having twice memory, twice as fast GPU and supporting twice as much RAM (up to 64GB).

With these new powerful chipsets, the new Pros will be able to support up to four external monitors.

Apple

Apple announced that its $99 smart speaker, the HomePod Mini, will be available in three new colors — orange, blue and yellow — on top of the existing white and space gray colorways. These new HomePod Minis in new colorways will be available to order starting in November.

There’s a new Apple Music subscription tier called the “Voice Plan”

Apple

Finally, Apple used the event to reveals the most affordable subscription plan to its Apple Music streaming service yet. It’s called the “Voice Plan” and costs just $4.99/month, which is half the price of the previous version subscription. But there’s a catch: the Voice Plan only works with Siri voice commands — you can’t open the app to search for music — and it’s really optimized for homes with multiple HomePod or HomePod mini speakers.

The 2022 Lexus LX 600 Is America’s Luxury Land Cruiser

Presumably like many of you, we were more than a little disappointed when Toyota revealed the all-new 300-Series Land Cruiser wouldn’t be coming to the United States, and that 2021 would be the last year for the iconic off-roader in America. But, like the devil, the truth lies in the details: while the carmaker may have made clear that the Land Cruiser name won’t go on here (at least, for now), they made no such promises about the Lexus LX — the more luxurious versions that sells better here, anyway.

Enter: the 2022 Lexus LX 600 — a.k.a. the Land Cruiser 300 Deluxe.

If you’re familiar with the latest Land Crusher’s specs, those of the new Lexus shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Power comes from a twin-turbo V6 connected to a 10-speed automatic, much like the all-new 2022 Tundra. The 3.5-liter turbocharged motor spits out 409 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, 26 more ponies and 76 more pound-feet than its predecessor; the 2022 LX also weighs in at an impressive 441 pounds less than the outgoing LX 570, so between the new powertrain and the lighter body, this new Lexus should be far more brisk than the one it’s replacing.

Lexus

Even if few drivers actually wind up taking advantage of it, off-road capability is a big part of what sets the Lexus LX apart from other full-size luxury SUVs, so it’s no surprise this beast still packs a full suite of rock-crawling, terrain-conquering features. The active suspension can be raised and lowered for added ground clearance, the full-time four-wheel-drive still packs high and low ranges, and an array of different drive modes can be selected for different types of road (or lack thereof) surface. There’s also an array of off-road cameras and five-speed off-road cruise control, in case you like to lean on tech a little more when venturing off the beaten path.

On-road ride quality should be improved significantly, as well — in particular if you opt for the new F Sport trim level, which becomes the sole LX 600 to offer a limited-slip differential for the rear axle.

The interior has received a much-needed upgrade, as well. The infotainment system is a vast improvement over the old model’s setup, which didn’t even offer Apple CarPlay; the new one can do so wirelessly, or pair wirelessly with Google-based phones using Android Auto. The top touchscreen stretches 12.3 inches between diagonal corners, while the one below goes 7.0 inches.

Interior accommodations should be even more comfortable than before — especially for buyers who opt for the new top-shelf Ultra Luxury version, seen below. The Ultra Luxury comes in four-seat configuration and offers exclusive cushions and headrests to better cosset the body, a footrest for the rear passenger’s-side rider, added air vents for the second row and an added screen — everything you’d want for a killer Uber ride home from the airport.

Lexus

Expect to see the 2022 LX 600 at Lexus dealerships in the United States in early 2022. Pricing hasn’t been announced just yet, but we’d bet the base model will start within spitting distance of the current version’s $86,930 base price, with the prices climbing as you walk up the trim level ladder through Premium, Luxury, F Sport and Ultra Luxury — with the latter most likely well above the $100,000 mark.

This Beautiful Coffee Maker Has the Ultimate Stamp of Approval

Shopping for a new coffee maker is a complicated task. Luckily, to help weed out the bad coffee makers from the good ones, you can turn to the Specialty Coffee Association (or us), which has a list of certified home brewers that the association deems as being the best of the best. Its list of 30 brewers is now a list of 31 thanks to the recent certification of the Ratio Six coffee maker.

The Ratio Six is a sleek brewer that essentially recreates the pour-over brewing process with the press of a button. The water flow is engineered to saturate coffee grounds evenly, while releasing the correct amount of water to perfect the bloom and brew phases. The Ratio Six brews up to 40 ounces of coffee, which stays warm for up to an hour in the brewer’s thermal carafe. The Six is designed to be used with a flat-bottomed coffee filter, but it can be swapped out for a conical filter, which comes with the pricier Ratio Eight, or you can even take it all away and brew directly into a Chemex minus the manual Chemex work.

The Ratio Six’s water head ensures even water distribution so that coffee grounds are evenly saturated.

Ratio

Besides all of its unique features, the Ratio Six ticks all of the boxes that the SCA looks for in a certified home brewer. Namely, it passes the rigorous test of brewing an SCA Golden Cup. In coffee nerd terms, a Golden Cup yields a cup of joe with a coffee-to-water ratio of 55 grams per liter, and it does so within a 10 percent margin of error using water heated between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. (For a more detailed breakdown of what constitutes an SCA Golden Cup, check this out.)

Setting aside all of the coffee jargon, the Ratio Six is just a damn beautiful coffee maker. Since 2012, Ratio has set out to make coffee makers that not only make a great-tasting coffee but machines that combine beauty, simplicity and quality — and it’s very apparent with the Six that the brand has done its job.

The Ratio Six is available on Ratio’s website, as well as select retailers like Williams Sonoma and Huckberry, with an MSRP of $345. For more details about the Six’s certification, head to the SCA’s website to learn more.
