Give the Gift of Portable Power with Up to 36% Off Anker Chargers and Accessories

Looking for even more great savings? Head over to Today’s Best Deals page to see all our top deals from today.

It seems like, with every passing day, more and more of the gear we carry every day requires power in order to function. The most obvious, ubiquitous and important to our daily lives is probably our smartphones. But many of us also carry other powered tech, including wireless headphones, smartwatches, tablet computers and even portable battery packs — all of which require juicing-up in order to function. Well, whether you’re buying for yourself or someone else (the gifting season certainly hasn’t ended yet), Anker is running a killer sale on some of its chargers, cables and other power-focused accessories at Amazon today only.

As mentioned, this is a one-day sale only, so if you’re hoping to bolster your everyday carry tech with some power-focused accessories, you’ll want to hop on these deals before they end at midnight tonight, December 14.

This Is the Futuristic Game Boy You’ve Been Waiting For

It’s finally here. The Analogue Pocket ($219) — a gorgeous new portable console that can play old Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advanced games in really high definition — was announced more than two years ago but, because of mostly pandemic-related production delays and supply chain issues, it’s only now being released to the world.

If you pre-ordered the Pocket this past summer, you should be receiving the console very shortly (shipping starts today, December 13). If you preorder tomorrow (December 14), which is when it opens back up again, you’ll Pocket will arrive sometime in Q1 of 2022. But you’ll have to be quick because if you miss the boat then there’s a chance your Pocket won’t come until 2023. Demand is very high.

I’ve been lucky enough to test several of Analogue’s high-end retro consoles over the last few years, including the Nt mini and the Super Nt, but the Pocket just feels different. Maybe it’s because the company’s first portable console, or that it looks so damn sleek, or that it hits home more because I spent so much time playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color when was a kid, but after spending the last two weeks with the Pocket I can say that it’s easily the coolest retro gaming console I’ve ever tested. It’s fucking awesome.

analogue pocket
Pictured: Playing the Mario Kart Super Circuit for Game Boy Advance and it looks and runs wonderfully.

The Pocket does exactly what Analogue’s other retro consoles do: it plays old games, but upscales them so they look and sound way better. According to Analogue, the Pocket is plays games at 10x the resolution of the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color and 6x the resolution of Game Boy Advanced (although there’s a slight difference in screen aspect ratio). And it really does make a huge difference.

When comparing the Pocket side-by-side with my old Game Boy Color — it’s night and day. The Pocket’s screen is a bigger and way more pixel rich, so games are so much more vibrant and colorful. It’s also way brighter and, thanks to its backlit LED panel, you can easily play games in the dark. In fact, I found myself wondering how my kid-self was even able to see the screen of the Game Boy Color, which, even in the wrong light, becomes almost impossible to see.

analogue pocket
Pictured: playing Pokemon Gold for the Game Boy Color.

Tucker Bowe

Admittedly, I never owned a Game Boy Advance so I’m not as well-suited to make a comparison, but Analogue did send over some old GBA cartridges (Mario Kart, Castlevania and Advanced Wars 2, specifically) and they worked without a hitch, even if I was frustratingly bad at each. Turns out, old games are hard.

But the Pocket isn’t just special for its ability to make old games look good. Analogue gave it a bunch of new features and abilities that make it kind of feel like a new portable console. It has a USB-C charging port, loud stereo speakers, re-mappable buttons and 3.5mm headphone jack so you can play games with sound in private. There’s even a built-in synthesizer, which is a cheeky wink to the modding and music communities who have turning original Game Boys into chiptune synths for years.

analogue pocket
The Pocket’s high-pixel density and backlit display make a world of difference, as you can finally play your Game Boy games at night.

Tucker Bowe

The most convenient new feature, at least for me, is the Pocket’s new sleep/wake feature. It allows you to quick press the power button and put the Pocket in a low power mode instead of turning it off; that way you can quickly boot up and pick up the game right where you left off, like in the middle of a Bomberman level or in the middle of Pokemon battle, without having to reboot the game. So it’s a huge deal if you forget to save your game before turning it off, either.

Additionally, Analog is releasing a number of accessories for the Pocket, including various cables that will allow you trade and battle friends, as well as cartridge adapters for Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Atari Lynx games — as if there weren’t enough game options. However, maybe the coolest thing is a dock ($100) that, just like the Nintendo Switch, allows you to play games on your TV with wired or wireless controllers.

analogue pocket
The Pocket plays cartridges from Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance with easy.

Tucker Bowe

The Pocket costs $219, which doesn’t actually feel that much considering its cool factor and how well made it is. The only downsides, as far as I can tell, is that the Pocket doesn’t have built-in Bluetooth (so no wireless headphones, unless you get an adapter) and it’s 6-hour battery life isn’t sensational (it takes about two hours to charge its 4,400mAh battery).

The biggest cost will probably be buying the game cartridges, which can be tricky because some of the most popular games can be difficult to find (and there are a lot of fakes out there). But if you have a lot of games already, you’re good to go — and you’ve probably ordered the Pocket months ago.

Due to component price increases, Analogue has increased the price of the Pocket from $200 to $219, meaning if you were on the first wave of Pocket preorders you saved $19.

Merge NFT By Pak Offered By Nifty Gateway Sells For More than $91 Million

Over the course of several months, financial analysts have been talking non-stop about the rising interest surrounding NFTs. Non-fungible tokens can be a difficult concept to grasp given how ridiculously easy it is to reproduce said digital items. Still, it’s not stopping collectors from throwing wads of cash at them. Take for example Nifty Gateway’s latest sale of a virtual asset called Merge.

According to sources, the two-day event saw 28,000 individuals collectively spend a jaw-dropping $91,806,519 for the Merge NFT project. “Pak, the creator of ‘Open Editions,’ returns with a new mechanism,” reads the listing. “You may acquire as many mass units as you desire during the 48 hours sale. You’ll get a dynamic NFT with your accumulated mass.”

As far as the system goes, this could be the closest one can have on a truly unique piece. If the creator’s words are anything to go by, depending on the number of mass units each owner has, what they eventually end up with is a one-of-a-kind digital collectible.

“Code as art. On a global scale,” notes the NFT platform about Merge. “Pak is pushing boundaries and using the infinite canvas of the blockchain and internet to create global scale art that moves minds and bodies.” As you can probably surmise, even the sales pitch seems like a poor attempt to sell something you don’t really need.

Nevertheless, the sale of the Merge shows there’s no getting around it soon as interest regarding NFTs is not dying out anytime soon. In fact, if you own a couple, why not grab something like a visualizer so you can show them off just like a framed piece of art. We’ve featured a couple from Love Hultén – the  Dissrup and synth#boi to give you an idea.

Formula 1 Is Making One of Its Biggest Changes in Decades. Here’s Why

Pirelli is one of the biggest names in tires. Pirelli tires feature prominently in our best all-terrain and best-winter tire buying guides; Pirelli makes the stock treads for everything from the Pagani Huayra supercar to the Rivian R1T pickup. Sure, Pirelli doesn’t produce the world’s premier restaurant guide or sponsor the pre-eminent non-rigid airship, butut even if you know nothing about tires, you may have heard the name Pirelli because of one factor: their sponsorship of Formula 1.

As of this story’s writing, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are battling for the F1 title over the final races. But whoever wins will do so on Pirelli tires, and sport a Pirelli hat on the podium. And it’s Pirelli that will spearhead one of the sport’s biggest historical changes for the 2022 season. Formula 1 is abandoning its 13-inch wheels — the standard for decades — for 18-inch ones.

Moving to bigger wheels is not a change that teams, in particular, were itching to make. The lower profile tires force designers to rethink not just suspensions but almost every other part of the car. But there are some compelling reasons Pirelli and F1 have decided to go that route.

pirelli 13 to 18 inch tire graphic

Pirelli

The new wheels are important for branding

F1 and Pirelli sell the sport as the pinnacle of automotive performance. But for that to work, that performance has to resonate with the broader automotive world. Pirelli got involved with F1 to sell its tires, and the sport has increased its profile, particularly in the eastern part of the world. The new 18-inch wheels look far more like the performance tires they sell than the dated 13-inch wheels with chunky tires and a potbellied sidewall.

Not looking dated is also important for Formula 1. For Mario Isola, Pirelli Motorsport’s head of F1 and car racing, shifting to 18-inch wheels is also part of a comprehensive effort to update the sport’s image.

“Why the change? I believe it’s part of the process that Liberty Media started a few years ago to give an image to Formula 1 – a more modern image,” Isola said.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The new wheels help Pirelli develop road tires

Pirelli argues that F1 is not just a banding gambit, it’s vital to their testing and development for their road tires. Knowledge learned at the extreme limits in Formula 1 trickles down into their consumer product, and moving to 18 inches — far closer in shape to the tire they would sell for a Ferrari — makes that testing even more valuable. “Racing at this level pushes innovation,” Pirelli’s R&D head Piero Misani said. “And what we can experiment in the world of racing is immediately transferred.”

Formula 1 helps Pirelli in a few key areas. One is developing tires for electric cars. EVs are heavier than combustion cars, F1 cars are not — but the extreme downforce they generate can replicate the increased load heavy EVs put on tires. “The downforces coming from Formula 1 are by far the highest you could have in any car competition,” Misani said. “What in Formula 1 is downforce is, in the electric vehicle extra weight. High load capacity. But the mechanism is the same.”

F1 is particularly important for testing materials when constructing a tire. The most advanced polymers and grip-enhancing resins often get their start in F1 before ending up in road cars. Pirelli also learns a great deal for its tires when it comes to rain performance. One of the reasons F1 cars can go racing in the wet (most of the time) is they displace an incredible amount of water with a limited tread profile.

F1 has also dramatically enhanced Pirelli’s development process, as the sport uses some of the world’s most advanced virtualization technology. Virtual tire development that started in racing is now critical to Pirelli development with OEM manufacturers. And it leads to better tires.

“With virtualization you have a clear understanding of the change you made and the effect you get,” Misani said. “You become faster, cheaper — but also cleverer.”

The new wheels may make F1 racing better…potentially

Pirelli believes its new 2022 tires will address many of the drivers’ complaints about the current tires — inconsistency and overheating. This should create an environment to help the drivers — not the tires — be the center of attention.

“Tires next year will be more consistent,” Isola said. “We tried to design a new family of compounds with a different concept, with less overheating, with a wider working range. The potential risk is that we have the majority of the races on one stop because of the characteristics of the tire.”

But Isola says that less tire-strategy-dominating races would not necessarily be a bad thing.

“This doesn’t mean that races will be boring or worse because of that,” Isola said. “If we have action on track and drivers that are pushing and they overtake each other, that is good for the show. So this is exactly what we want to see. It is not that two-stop or one-stop is making the race better or worse.”

One note of caution Isola offers is that the new 18-inch wheels have not been tested on the 2022 cars yet — because those cars don’t yet exist. Much of the testing was performed on retrofitted 2019 cars. So we won’t know the true characteristics until they officially get on track.

The Complete Buying Guide to Shinola Watches

Welcome to Brand Breakdown, a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you won’t find on the average About page.

The Shinola name has come a long way from its origin as a Rochester shoe polish maker to its modern rebranding as a Detroit lifestyle brand. With a stated mission of reviving American manufacturing, the company makes everything from leather products to bicycles — but watches are at its core. It’s gone from an association with a certain old-timey expression to one of the hippest watchmakers around.

Resurrecting the once flourishing but since defunct American watchmaking industry is today a mantra of many a microbrand upstart and even larger companies like Timex. Shinola, however, deserves at least some credit for having fueled that idea (and perhaps even influenced other national watchmaking revivals such as those seen in Britain and France). When Fossil founder and former chairman/CEO Tom Kartsotis started the (modern) company in 2011, it went on to receive national attention and even support from politicians who approved of its efforts to revitalize Detroit and, by extension, American industry.

Combining a familiar American name (best known for the 1940s-era expression that one “doesn’t know shit from Shinola”) with Detroit’s image of manufacturing pride, investment in the local community and much modern marketing savvy has proven highly successful. The brand employs locals and is known to assemble its watches and other products in Detroit, but its use of foreign components and American branding has also invited some criticism and controversy. Shinola’s quartz watches use a movement it calls the Argonite, which is “hand-assembled in Detroit with Swiss and other imported parts.” Its mechanical watches mostly use common Swiss movements from Sellita.

In the end, you’re getting solidly built watches (and other products) with plenty of talking points — not to mention some retro looks that evoke America’s past. Below is a breakdown of Shinola’s primary men’s watch collections and standout models.

Here’s the Crazy Watch Michael Strahan Is Taking Into Space

How do you pack for a trip to space? Six passengers on the Blue Origin space flight launching, December 11, 2021, need to ponder that very question. One of them is NFL champion, award-winning journalist and Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan, and among the personal items he’s bringing is a watch that’s appropriately out-of-this-world.

It would seem that there’s no need to pack a toothbrush and extra socks, as the last Blue Origin flight (in October 2021) lasted only around 11 minutes. Rather, Strahan is taking personal and sentimental items, as he told People magazine. Personal effects he’s allowed to bring are limited to three pounds and, interestingly, among them are no fewer than two watches.

He’s taking his grandfather’s pocket watch as well as a wristwatch from the high-end independent Swiss watchmaker DeBethune. Even among the most esoteric watch companies DeBethune is easily at the far end of creative, avant-garde horology. The particular model Strahan is flying with is called the DB28 Kind of Blue Z and it represents the brand well, also feeling thematically and chromatically on-point for the Blue Origin flight.

DeBethune DB28 Kind of Blue Z

More like a producer of wrist-bound art than time-telling devices, DeBethune is the kind of watchmaker that produces highly complicated, technical and extensively hand-finished watches for collectors that are spending in the five- and six-figure range. The company generally takes inspiration from science fiction, and Trekkies are sure to notice references to the Star Trek franchise.

It seems appropriate for a space mission in that sense (Star Trek actor William Shatner was on the previous Blue Origin flight), but also due to DeBethune’s predilection for the color blue as seen applied to nearly every surface of the DB28. The watch itself is 42.6mm wide in a titanium case with “artisanal and natural treatment of the metals” to achieve the blue finish, and is powered by an in-house-developed movement. Around the 6 o’clock position is an orb that displays the moon phase in 3D. Such watches are made in very limited quantities, and prices are typically well into the $100,000 range.

Needless to say, this watch isn’t comparable to something like the Omega Speedmaster which was actually a functional part of astronauts’ kit, and the DB28 is perhaps better seen as representing a love of space, technology and artistry. Michael Strahan is a “guest” of Blue Origin, the commercial space company founded by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, whereas four of the other passengers are paying “space tourists.” The other objects he’s taking with him, are also interesting: a lucky $2 bill, his Super Bowl XLII and Pro Football Hall of Fame rings, a sentimental pearl necklace, and 12 shell casings from the 12-gun salute at his father’s funeral.

The launch is scheduled for December 11 [update: rescheduled from December 9], 2021, from Van Horn, TX, and is the 19th flight of the New Shepard spacecraft. If you’re a Strahan and Blue Origin fan, you can even buy a collab sweatshirt as a more affordable alternative to the watch.

The Chevy Camaro Could Score a Power Upgrade from the Corvette

These days, it seems the Chevrolet Camaro — at least as we know it — isn’t long for this world. Rumors of the muscle car’s demise have been swirling for several years now, brought on by a combination of lagging sales (partly induced by an ill-fated mid-life design refresh that was eventually walked back) and the automotive world’s massive push towards electrification. With SUVs and trucks dominating the market today and EVs set to dominate tomorrow, there’s not much enthusiasm from a business perspective to invest in a gas-guzzling, low-riding two-door car.

Still, the existing sixth-generation Camaro remains a delight to drive, especially in its gnarly V8-powered forms. And according to a new rumor, some of those eight-cylinder powerhouses might have one more upgrade in the cards before they’re relegated to the history books: the 6.2-liter V8 currently found in the C8-generation Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Okay, to cut you off before you get started complaining: yes, the Camaro SS and LT1 do indeed already pack a 6.2-liter V8 sourced from the Corvette. The old Corvette, that is — the C7-gen Corvette Stingray and Grand Sport. (That engine, for the record, is known internally at GM and by fanboys by the code-name LT1.)

According to GM Authority, for the 2023 model year, Chevrolet will upgrade the Camaro SS and LT1 models to the LT2 V8 found in the C8 Corvette — known internally as LT2 — which makes 490 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. Those numbers would give the ‘Maro a nice little late-life power bump over its current 455 hp and 455 lb-ft. Perhaps more importantly from a corporate perspective, the LT2 also produces fewer emissions than the LT1.

Still, as GM Authority points out, it’s not guaranteed; their sources claim GM has already redirected all the engineering and development resources previously allocated to the Camaro, which would make the challenges of adapting the LT2 — which, for example, has only so far been mated to the Corvette’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission — rather difficult. Still, we can’t help but hold out hope that the Camaro will have at least one surprise left for us before it transitions into an inevitable electric crossover.

An Omega Speedmaster Owned by Ralph Ellison Is Coming Up for Auction

Cool dive watches, chronographs and complicated pieces are seemingly a dime a dozen at auction — indeed, nearly every product description from one auction house I can think uses the words “rare,” “significant,” or “important” seemingly without any sense of irony, utterly diluting this terminology to the point of near meaninglessness.

That being said, there are lots that are indeed “important” beyond their reference numbers, of which the following is one: a mid-1960s Omega Speedmaster owned by none other than Ralph Ellison, acclaimed author of Invisible Man. Though Invisible Man remained the sole novel published during his lifetime, this pivotal work concerning the Black experience in the United States made Ellison one of the most well regarded literary giants of post-War America.

ralph ellison
Ellison with cigar and Speedmaster.

Phillips

It’s unclear whether this Speedy was purchased by the author or gifted to him, but the watch is clearly visible on Ellison’s wrist in numerous photographs from 1968 onwards, until his death in 1994 from pancreatic cancer. It was later sold at a small Long Island auction house in 2016 where it was purchased by the current consigner, who was seemingly unaware of its provenance. It was eventually confirmed via insurance statements that listed both the reference number and the serial number that this was indeed Ellison’s Speedmaster.

Were this any “ordinary” ref. 145.012-SP on its matching bracelet, Speedy aficionados’ ears would certainly prick up — this was the last Speedmaster to be powered by the famed caliber 321 hand-wound movement. However, this being the watch of such a prominent American writer in such “honest” condition — the dial retains its uneven aging and includes its bracelet, etc. — the stakes are much higher. (Purists will rejoice that although a period-correct replacement chronograph pusher has been sourced to replace a missing original and the watch’s gasket and crystal replaced, the original crystal is included with the sale. Interestingly, Ellison continued to wear the watch with only one pusher after the original was lost.)

These Affordable E-Bikes Are on Sale and Make for a Great Gift

Looking for even more great savings? Head over to Today’s Best Deals page to see all our top deals from today.

If there’s one downside to the burgeoning e-bike revolution, it’s the costs involved. E-bikes can be a great substitute for a motorcycle when it comes to an urban commute, as we learned through firsthand testing not too long ago; they’re also great for anyone who wants a little added pep when riding around off-road. But with price tags that can equal a solid used motorcycle, many e-bikes are (arguably) too pricey to justify as a real-life conveyance.

That’s where Rad Power Bikes comes in. The Seattle-based company makes a line of e-bikes that are both affordable and incredibly practical, thanks to modular construction that can accommodate tons of accessories and fat tires to soak up bumps and blast through obstacles. And right now, you can score up to $100 off the already-affordable prices of every e-bike in Rad’s model lineup — making for an awesome holiday gift.

The urban-friendly RadCity commuter bike is marked down $100, bringing it to $1,499 for both the Version 3 and the newer Version 4. There are also a pair of RadRover electric fat bikesVersion 1 and Version 5 — that are also down $100, bringing them to $1,599 each. But as with many Cyber Week deals that are still going, you’d better be quick on the draw if you want to take advantage of these savings; the deal only lasts while supplies do.

Court Clears Self-Proclaimed Bitcoin Inventor Of Fraud Charges

The cryptomarket craze has grown exponentially over the course of the pandemic. In fact, we regularly observe cryptocurrencies rise and fall so rapidly that even analysts have a hard time speculating. Meanwhile, a recent development is sure to shake up the charts. It seems a court in Miami, Florida finally cleared Craig Wright of fraud charges involving Bitcoin – a lot of it apparently.

The lawsuit details that the defendant and the late Dave Kleiman – a computer security professional – were partners who created and mined Bitcoin. As such, the latter’s brother believes he and the rest of the family deserve a fair share of the collected cryptocurrency.

The dispute reportedly involves 1.1 million Bitcoin which was allegedly mined by a certain Satoshi Nakamoto. According to Wright, he is the man behind it all. His claim has yet to be proven, but the jury’s verdict says otherwise. This implies some form of proof was available.

Cryptocurrency pundits refer to a white paper dated October 2008. Titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System,” the author is listed as Nakamoto. Although the findings were in his favor, the so-called inventor of Bitcoin still needs to pay $100 million in intellectual property rights to a joint venture between him and Kleiman.

“This has been a remarkable good outcome and I feel completely vindicated,” said Wright. As of this writing, the value of the 1.1 million Bitcoin he holds amounts to roughly $54 billion. Now that’s certainly a huge fortune to be sitting on. Kleiman’s family were probably hoping for a huge payout. But just like cryptocurrency, it’s always a gamble and unfortunately, luck is not on their side this time.

Mercedes May Have an Awesome Electric Wagon Coming, Rumor Says

Mercedes is going electric, and the process has already started. A wave of EQ-branded vehicles is coming. Many will track combustion counterparts and ultimately replace them. And CarBuzz uncovered rumors suggesting that perhaps our favorite Mercedes, the AMG E 63 S wagon, may live on in electric form.

The midsize EQE — the electric counterpart to the E-Class — is coming to America in sedan and SUV forms. The rumors have a high-performance AMG version and a shooting brake (aka wagon) version coming as well, which could deliver more than 400 miles of range.

If an EQE AMG shooting brake materializes, we can be cautiously optimistic about it coming to America. Mercedes has been selling both base and AMG versions of the combustion E-Class in America, though not the smaller C-class wagon. The AMG E 63 S wagon’s primary rival, the Audi RS6 Avant, is reportedly getting an electric version. Porsche will be selling both Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo wagon-like versions of the Taycan as well.

Were you hoping to score a new Biturbo V8-powered AMG E 63 S before it departs the lineup? You may already be out of luck. Mercedes-Benz quietly suspended several vehicles — many of them AMG V8-powered — for the 2022 model year. The AMG E 63 S wagon page has been erased from the MBUSA website, leaving the E450 as the only wagon on sale. The removal could be temporary. It could also be the end of its V8-powered run.

Mercedes has a new E-class generation coming for 2023. But reportedly, the AMG E 63 S will follow the C63’s lead, swapping the V8 for a 2.0-liter inline-four PHEV setup putting out more than 600 horsepower.

This Value-Packed Chronograph Has Us Excited About Vintage Watch Reissues Again

Have you had enough of the vintage reissue watch trend yet? Not so fast. Even if you’re starting to feel jaded about all the retro style, something like Lebois & Co’s Heritage Chronograph is sure to draw you back in. With just the right combination of size, design, execution and price, we just can’t help but get excited about this 1940s-inspired piece.

Lebois & Co. was started by the French watchmaking family Dodane and existed between 1934 and 1972. The same folks who brought you the compelling Airain Type 20 Re-Edition (reviewed here) were inspired to resurrect the brand in order to bring a chronograph from the 1940s back to the market. Now, having produced a number of watches in the meantime, the Heritage Chronograph is the company’s modern take on that watch.

Lebois & Co. took an approach sometimes seen among small independent watchmakers and asked its audience to help design the watches by voting on various design elements. The result is a series of models with a relatively modern case and different executions of a charming dial style featuring telemeter and tachymeter scales, as was commonly seen in chronographs of that era.

watch
The Lebois & Co. Heritage Chronograph comes in several dial iterations and strap combinations.

Courtesy

Inside, the watch is powered by a hand-wound La Joux-Perret movement with a column wheel (an enthusiast-favorite feature for the smooth operation it offers). The manually wound movement helps keep the case nice and thin at 10.9mm (not including the domed sapphire crystal), and at 39mm wide in steel, we’re talking about a chronograph that’s going to wear like your typical automatic dress watch — and far more easily than the vast majority of chronos out there, which tend to be bold and chunkily dimensioned.

The project is still in its production stages, but the brand will begin taking pre-orders on December 14th. For a Swiss-made chronograph with the specs and level of quality expected of the brand, its preorder price of $2,518 packs some strong value. Add to that the captivating design and proportions, and you’ve got a proposition without much competition in the modern market.

The 10 Best New Vehicles of the Year

This story is part of the GP100, our list of the 100 best new products of the year. Read the introduction to the series here, and stay tuned for more lists like it throughout the month.

We all thought 2021 would be an improvement. After all, 2020 was, shall we say, one of the crummier years in American history, so by January of this year, it seemed as though things had to swing back in a positive direction.

But as bad as 2020 had been, its successor proved even more problematic — at least, for the world of vehicles. Important supplies were suddenly, well, in short supply, the trickle-down effect of companies idling plants and cancelling orders during the COVID nightmare. That caused a litany of production nightmares for automakers, leaving them lacking key parts — and unable to meet the demand of buyers.

Many of these buyers, in turn, switched tracks and started buying used cars and trucks — just as rental car agencies, suddenly ravenous for vehicles after selling off their inventory during the pandemic to stay afloat but now faced with a tsunami of travelers looking to go anywhere, also began buying whatever they could lay their hands on. This, in turn, sent the price of used vehicles upwards faster than Elon Musk’s spacebound Tesla Roadster — spiking so fast, in fact, that they’ve been playing a major role in the inflation we’re now dealing with.

In spite of these issues, however, 2021 still proved to be a momentous year for personal transportation. It saw a slew of highly competitive, groundbreaking new electric vehicles reach the streets, and automakers promise billions of dollars in investment to roll out hundreds more over the next few years. It saw icons resurrected, categories redefined and companies push into new verticals. And above all else…it gave us a hell of a lot of interesting new rides to drive.

Game Changer: Rivian R1T

Rivian

Battery Size: 135 kWh
EPA Range: 314 miles
Gear Tunnel Clearance (in People): 5’6″
Price: $67,500+

LEARN MORE

We were all waiting for a truck like the Rivian R1T. We just didn’t know we were.

After all, how could you know you wanted a truck of the sort that had never existed before? A pickup truck that packs more power than a Ferrari 812 Superfast and runs from 0 to 60 in well under four seconds, in spite of weighing nearly four tons…and scrambles over rocks and up trails and down mountains with the ease of a Ford Bronco…and offers not just a bed, but two trunks, one of which can be filled with a portable kitchen…and on top of all that, will never use a drop of gasoline in its life?

rivian r1t

Rivian

In all honestly, Rivian could have delivered half as ambitious a debut product and still likely seen its valuation explode the way it has since it went public in November. Electric pickup trucks are poised to be the Next Big Thing in vehicles — hence why Ford, General Motors and Stellantis are investing massive sums into building their own. But Rivian got there first, before even Tesla’s Cybertruck. And they did so with panache, creating a rig with four electric motors (versus the average AWD EV’s two) making a combined 838 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque, as well as an active hydraulic damper system much like the one found in high-end McLaren supercars that helps it handle better than a pickup has a right to.

Impressive as the R1T is on-road, it’s even more astonishing beyond the pavement. With up to 15 inches of ground clearance and the ability to individually spoon-feed power to the wheels, it not only goes practically anywhere a truck could conceivably go, it makes it look easy. There’s no messing with low range or disconnecting sway bars or anything like that; simply point the Rivian where you want to go and squeeze the accelerator, and it’ll go. And thanks to its electric powertrain, there’s no idle clatter or rev roar to shatter the illusion of being one with nature. It’s a feeling unlike anything you’ve experienced before — because the R1T is the sort of vehicle you’ve never driven before.

Mercedes-Benz

Horsepower: 329-518

LEARN MORE

Mercedes-Benz isn’t in the business of doing things half-assed — there’s a reason their tagline is “the best or nothing.” So it should come as no surprise that their first electric car meant for mass consumption in America, the EQS, is every bit equal in luxury and performance to the S-Class sedan that’s long defined the brand — just powered by electrons instead of gasoline.

mercedes eqs

Mercedes-Benz

Sure, the design may be a bit unconventional, but that Jelly-Belly shape means it delivers an industry-leading 0.20 coefficient of drag, helping it to deliver exception range. It also makes it quiet — and electric power doubles down on that, helping those aboard to better appreciate the sybaritic interior that’s more than worthy of the price.

Any Mercedes flagship worth its salt needs some pep in its step, too. While the entry-level EQS 450’s single motor can fling it from 0 to 60 mph in under six seconds, power fiends will likely want the dual-motor EQS 580 4Matic, which packs an extra motor and double the driven wheels to shave nearly two seconds off that. (Or, of course, they could wait for the 751-hp AMG version coming next year.)

As the tip of the spear for Mercedes-Benz’s electric vehicle onslaught — the company is planning to drop half a dozen EVs on us in the next couple years — the EQS needed to land quite the blow on the luxury car marketplace. Luckily for them (and us, and the planet), it’s done just that.

Ford set a witheringly high bar for the Bronco. Years of protracted teasing and leaks built excitement into a frenzy. The SUV launched with a tsunami of Build Wild sub-branding. It directly challenged the Jeep Wrangler, one of the most beloved, iconic and capable vehicles that America builds. The new Bronco cleared that bar and then some. It’s not just a legitimate competitor for the Wrangler. It may — dare we write it — be the better off-roader for most people.

ford bronco

Ford

Even the hardiest off-road vehicle spends much of its time on-road. And the Bronco blows away the Wrangler on the pavement with its independent front suspension. It still delivers the truck-like feel buyers of those cars love, but it comes with none of the drawbacks (fuel economy excepted). The Bronco takes hard corners flatly and with none of the course corrections endemic to Wrangler driving.

Off-Road, the Bronco matches the Wrangler — or comes so close only the gnarliest folks in Moab would be able to tell the differences. The Sasquatch package gets you massive 35-inch tires and Bilstein monotube shocks from the factory. The Bronco not only “Goes Over Any Terrain,” but it does so intuitively and with minimal effort or clenching for the novice off-roader. And if you do bash a bumper or a fender, Ford offers a suite of modular replacements that even a non-wrencher can install with standard tools.

Should you run out and buy a Bronco right now? Well — to use a cringe-worthy Ford pun — hold your horses. Ford has confirmed it’s dropping a desert-running Bronco Raptor next summer. And a Wrangler 4xe-fighting hybrid has also been hinted at.

Cadillac is going electric in a few years. But the brand took one last stab at building the ultimate combustion performance sedan with the CT5-V Blackwing. It’s rear-wheel-drive. It packs a gobsmacking 668 horsepower from its supercharged 6.2-liter V8. And it lets you wield that grunt with a six-speed manual transmission.

That power sounds brutal and maniacal — and it is. But the horsepower number belies an incredibly sophisticated piece of machinery that’s agile in the corners with sublime chassis and suspension tuning and offers five track modes. When you’re not letting it rip, the CT5-V Blackwing retreats to being a tame, comfortable Cadillac sedan you can daily drive. Oh, and did we mention it starts for less than $85,000?

The last time Jeep produced a full-size SUV, Nirvana’s “Nevermind” was still months from completion, Bill Clinton had yet to announce a run for the presidency and the U.S.S.R was still technically a thing. In the 30 years since, the iconic off-road brand has kept busy — selling Grand Cherokees and Wranglers en masse and becoming more popular than ever. All the while, however, its crosstown competitors were churning out super-sized, super-profitable SUVs, from Expeditions and Tahoes to Escalades and Navigators.

2022 wagoneer

Wagoneer

Well, just as the trends of the Nineties have come back around, so has Jeep’s full-sized sport-ute. But the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer of 2021 are a far, far cry from some copy-cat version of their forebears; they’re all-new, cleverly designed beasts of burden made for modern audiences. The Wagoneer packs up to 75 inches of combined screens, from instrument panel to rear-seat entertainment to a passenger’s-side dashboard touchscreen. Its boxy proportions create outstanding room, with enough space for adults in all three rows. And the top-tier Grand Wagoneer’s interior is as luxurious as any vehicle at its price — foreign or domestic.

Sure, the fuel economy may be a bit of a throwback, and the idea of spending more than $100,000 on a Jeep may be off-putting to some. (Which may be why Jeep chose to leave its own name almost entirely off the vehicle, branding them just as “Wagoneer” and “Grand Wagoneer.”) But there’s no arguing that, with these behemoths, Jeep has thrown itself into contention with the best that Detroit has to offer in the giant SUV arena.

Reinventing an icon can be daunting, which is especially true for the Honda Civic. Honda has been building the compact Civic for 50 years — in fact, it’s one of the best-selling cars of all time. And it has attained that status by persistently performing a feat other manufacturers find impossible: namely, building a car that’s affordable, bullet-proof and, unlike the rival Toyota Corolla, seriously fun to drive. In fact, the all-new 2022 model may be the best iteration of the Civic yet.

For one thing, it looks dramatically more upscale, whereas the last generation’s exterior was a bit tortured and complicated. Honda stretched the car out with more space between the A-pillar and front wheel well, and they also simplified the exterior lines and leveled the front door handles.

honda civic interior

Honda

On the inside, the brand created one of the most high-design interiors on the market — at a price point where you’d expect an assault of airline-grade plastic. A honeycomb mesh accent spans the length of the dashboard, masking vents and speakers for an exceptionally clean look. On the higher trims, the high-touch surfaces receive smudge and scratch-resistant coatings. It also offers a surprising amount of space, even with two kids and car seats.

Honda kept the same engines, but they poured development into the handling and tuning to deliver pleasantly hefty steering and a sportier and more composed ride. They didn’t boldly add a hybrid or an all-wheel drive option, and because they didn’t, the car is still legitimately affordable — the top-tier Touring trim starts below $30,000 after destination. And if you’re into driving manual, three versions of the 11th generation Civic will offer one.

The second-generation Toyota Tundra had grown ancient and — compared to its Big Three competition — almost laughably outdated. But Toyota finally gave its full-size truck the complete overhaul it deserved for 2022, and it’s a revolutionary upgrade.

Toyota ditched the hoary, inefficient 5.7-liter V8 for two twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 versions. The base engine, used in the new Toyota Land Cruiser, delivers more power and torque than the V8 with better efficiency. The high-performance iForce-Max engine is a hybrid that puts out a mammoth 583 lb-ft of torque at just 2,400 RPM. Throw in ride quality improvements from a stiffer frame and a cushy new coil-sprung suspension and you get a bonafide challenger for the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.

Ford jettisoned its non-Mustang car lineup in America for more profitable trucks and SUVs. But kicking cars like the Fiesta, Focus and Fusion to the curb did not mean Ford abandoned the affordable car segment. Instead, Ford is redefining that segment with the new Maverick compact pickup, an idea that would have been an oxymoron a few years ago.

Ford doesn’t bestow its “Built Ford Tough” branding on just any vehicle. The Maverick is a truck. It has a bed. It has an Fx4 off-roading package. And it can haul and tow a fair amount. But the Maverick’s underpinnings are all crossover, using the same platform as the Escape and Bronco Sport. So it’s much lighter than other trucks on the road and delivers crossover-like driving dynamics. That sounds like the best of both worlds, but it gets even better.

The Maverick’s base engine is a 2.5-liter hybrid, which the EPA rates for up to 42 mpg city, which feels conservative based on our testing. Equipped with that base engine, the Maverick starts under $20,000 (a little above $21,000 with the destination fee), making it the cheapest hybrid on sale in America. And unlike notable past attempts at compact, car-based pickups, it’s defiantly not weird.

Add in some cool DIY storage solutions, and you get the fun, practical, affordable and handsome truck pretty much anyone can find a use for. If Ford let you fit the hybrid Maverick with all-wheel drive, we would already have reserved one.
