BMW’s full-size flagship SUV, the X7, is the largest Bimmer ever made. Thus far, the Bavarian manufacturer has not put out a performance X7 M version (or, sadly, a production model of the motorcycle-toting pickup concept it whipped up). But now, BMW’s alternate performance-tuner Alpina is stepping into that breach with the XB7. And unlike many Alpina models, we’ll be able to buy it in the United States.
The specs of the 2021 Alpina XB7 specs are competitive with many super sports cars. Alpina supes up the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 to 612 horsepower — an 89-hp jump from the previously top-tier BMW X7 M50i — and 590 lb-ft of torque. That’s nine more horsepower than Mercedes-AMG’s closest equivalent, the AMG GLS 63. The XB7 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a claimed 4.0 seconds and achieve a top speed of 180 mph.
Alpina-specific mods include a more firmly-tuned suspension that can lower the ride height by up to 1.6 inches in Sport+ mode or above 155 mph, a customizable Alpina exhaust system and an Alpina-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission. If so inclined, you can fit your XB7 with 23-inch wheels and specially tailored XB7 tires from Pirelli, the tire manufacturer for Formula 1.
As you would expect, this won’t be a cheap vehicle. The Alpina XB7 will start at $141,300, more than $40,000 more than the BMW x7 M50i. It’s significantly more than the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, which starts at $132,100.
BMW will begin accepting orders for the Alpina XB7 this month. Deliveries will begin in September 2020.
