Verdict: Last year was a big one for Zenith. At Baselworld 2017, it introduced the Defy El Primero 21 — an El Primero with a chronograph seconds hand tuned to run at a frequency of an astounding 360,000 bph. A couple of months later, it unveiled the Defy Lab, which has a new type of high-frequency (108,000 bph) oscillator that makes it, as the brand claims, the most accurate mechanical watch in the world. Zenith is clearly trying to make the Defy a core collection within its lineup, and to do that, an entry-level timepiece is in order.

That’s where the Defy Classic comes in. It mimics the sleek shape of other Defy watches, but those hoping the brand’s geeky, high-beat wizardry would trickle down to a lower-cost timepiece will be disappointed. Instead, Zenith opted for a more conventional 28,800 bph movement, albeit one with a silicon escapement. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this (it’s a great caliber), but it does feel like a missed opportunity to bring the brand’s high-end technology more mainstream. Still, this appears to be a great everyday watch, utilizing a titanium construction and employing a handsome design.

Who It’s For: Expect this to go toe-to-toe with other everyday luxury watches, such as the Rolex DateJust and Omega Aqua Terra. The Zenith gets an edge for using titanium in lieu of stainless steel, and the integrated bracelet and case design certainly stands out amongst its more conventional brethren.
