You’ve likely heard the rumors about second-generation AirPods. We have too. Apple will supposedly release them “sometime in 2019” and they will be sweat-proof, which current AirPods are not. The case will have LED lights to indicate battery life. The case will also support wireless charging, so you’ll be able to juice them back up with the same wireless charging pad you use with your new-age iPhone X, iPhone XS or iPhone XR. And, lastly, they will be more expensive than current AirPods, likely to hover in the $180 to $200 price bracket.

You’re also likely to know that Apple still has yet to deliver its AirPower wireless charging pad, which it announced well over a year ago. We still don’t have an ETA on that. The point is, if you’re waiting for second-generation AirPods to arrive, you might have to wait longer than you think.

Still, if you’re desperate to have AirPods that can wirelessly charge, you’re in luck. Amazon is currently selling the NeotrixQI AirPods Wireless Charger Case, which, from what I can tell, is the first AirPod case that supports wireless charging. It costs $37 and, of course, does not include AirPods.

Before you get too excited, however, you should know that we haven’t tested this third-party charging case and buyers should be a little wary. Some early Amazon reviews are positive, but others note things like “a cheap hinge mechanism” and the case supposedly “gets warm” if you leave it on the charging pad for too long. It should be noted that the case does still have a Lightning port if you want to go the old analog charging route.

Personally, I’d treat this accessory with a heavy dose of skepticism. Chances are that you’ll buy it and probably be disappointed. The charging case that comes with AirPods, even though it can’t charge wirelessly, is still damn nice.
