There are many awards and award shows that are important in the spirit business — World Whiskies Award, San Francisco Spirits Competition and International Spirits Challenge chief among them — but none are as influential as the gospel of Jim Murray (in whisky, at least).

Murray’s Whisky Bible is the tome that when published knights bottles to forever be hunted down and made harder to find. The winner of the 2019 edition’s Bourbon of the Year and grand prize World Whisky of the Year is the already difficult to track down (and afford) William Larue Weller.

This is the second year in a row a Buffalo Trace Distillery bottle has won World Whisky of the Year, with the Colonel E.H. Taylor straight bourbon winning last year. The William Larue Weller is a part of Buffalo Trace’s 2017 Antique Collection, is 128.2 proof and is running for several hundreds of dollars now (and sure to skyrocket after this).
