Sunday Drive: From a mid-engine ‘Vette to a restomod RV

Automotive enthusiasts are a diverse bunch. As proof, we present last week’s top posts on Autoblog, starting with some really good spy photos of the upcoming mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette. Will it be sold alongside a classic front-engine ‘Vette? We have no idea, but we can’t wait to find out.

Up next is a pickup truck. Can’t get much further from a supercar, right? At least both the Corvette and the 2019 Ram 1500 – which will debut a radical new design that appears to eschew the mini big-rig look of past Rams in favor of something more refined – are both American.

Decidedly not American? The Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV. The boxy off-road ‘ute looks a heck of a lot like the old one, which is probably a good thing, but we know it’ll be fancier and more luxurious than ever before. Check out the leaked images below.

Also hailing from Germany, but sharing absolutely nothing else in common at all, is the Audi A4 Allroad. We’ve been driving this all-wheel-drive wagon for a while now, and we like it quite a bit. And, last but not least, is a 1959 bus that’s been converted into an RV.

Like we said, y’all certainly are a diverse bunch.

Sunday Drive: Still thankful for supercars

The Thanksgiving holiday meant that last week was pretty short on stories, but apparently our readers are still thankful for supercars. The biggest news of the week was the new Aston Martin Vantage, which is clothed in a new look that Autoblog readers are still very much unsure of. It’s a radical departure from past Aston Martin models, and while everyone seems to agree that the profile is lovely, the squinty headlamps are a particular source of contention. Its 503 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque cannot be argued with … oh, and a V12 may be coming soon.

Moving along is a nearly new 2006 Ford GT for sale that’s expected to fetch around $300,000 at auction. It’s so unused that it still has plastic wrap covering the leather interior. The Ango-American theme continues with the McLaren 720S, though not in road-going form. Still, renderings of the upcoming 720S GT3 racer round out this supercar-rich recap.

Sunday Drive: Performance comes in many shapes and sizes

The Chevrolet Corvette has always stood out as a bastion of reasonably priced performance, and the latest ‘Vette has that in spades. And while its expected starting price of around $120,000 certainly isn’t cheap, it’s an undeniable deal in the supercar world – remember, this thing’ll do 210 miles per hour thanks to its 755-horsepower supercharged V8 engine. And did you get a load of that massive rear wing?

Team Corvette’s longtime foe, the Porsche 911, is similarly hellbent on ultimate performance. And as a reminder of how long the Corvette/911 rivalry has been melting tires we present the 1990 Porsche 911 as reimagined by Singer you see below. It’s beautiful, it’s green, and it’s packing 500 air-cooled horsepower.

You don’t have to burn gasoline to go fast, as proven by the second-generation Tesla Roadster, which was revealed as a surprise late last week. Elon Musk says it’ll be the quickest car in the world with a 0-60 time of just 1.9 seconds. And while you may not think of a semi truck when you think speed, the Tesla Semi can do 0-60 in 5 seconds flat unloaded, or in 20 seconds with a load of 80,000 pounds. Compared to today’s crop of diesel semis, that’s amazing.

Continuing the truck theme, we present an artists rendering of what the next-generation Ram 1500 pickup may look like. Spoiler alert: Ram’s mini-semi look is giving way to something much more modern. There may even be a first-of-its-kind split tailgate at the rear. And if you don’t think the Ram 1500 has anything to do with performance, we should remind you that it’s one of the cheapest ways to get a tire-shredding Hemi V8 engine in America.
