Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 Smartwatch

Casio, a name that is best known for its G-Shock range of watches. These are robust timepieces built to take a beating and get back up again for some more. Some of you might have also remembered its brief stint with rugged smartphones that made its way stateside courtesy of some wireless carriers. Understanding the durability of most of its products, you know that the Japanese brand is not one to back down from a challenge. Therefore, it revisited its roots to bring us the Pro Trek WSD-F30, a smartwatch made to take on the outdoors.

The model prior to it was the Pro Trek WSD-F20, which was a substantial upgrade to its first-generation entry. At 57mm the second-generation wearable was considerably large, which supposedly hindered those with smaller wrists from its usage. This is why the third-generation successor relocates all of the features that made its predecessor great into a new form that’s 4mm smaller.

You still get a smartwatch with MIL-STD-810 protection from various hazards. One thing that we are happy to see on the latest device is its improved display. That bothersome notch that was on the bottom of the original and second version’s screen is no longer there. It now sports a perfectly round 1.2-inch dual-layer display that combines a 390 x 390 color OLED and monochrome LCD.

Several sensors are on board to help hikers with functions such as a GPS, barometer, compass, altimeter, and more. You can look forward to at least 1.5 days of regular usage time, while the Timepiece Mode grants users roughly a month of battery life. The Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 is slated to become available early in 2019.

Diesel On Full Guard 2.5 Smartwatch

Watches from Diesel follow a certain design language that features huge bezels, aggressive looks, and bigger cases. Their newest smartwatch, the Diesel On Full Guard 2.5, maintains a similar style along with the latest version of Google’s WearOS on board.

It’s quite seldom that you find a smart wearable that flaunts a rugged appearance. It comes in four variants and all of them look fashionable and fantastic. Each one comes with a different watch strap—two of those sport a silicone band, another comes with a leather strap, and the last one with a metal wristband. It’s not really a big deal which one you go for since the straps are user-replaceable with any compatible options.

Its matte aluminum and stainless steel case measure 47 mm in diameter and 13 mm thick. It houses a 1.39-inch touchscreen, GPS, an NFC chip for payments, an optical heart rate sensor, and a 300mAh battery. It’s also ready to face any adventure with its durable construction and a 5 ATM water resistance.

We learned that it will still rely on the older Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset paired with 512MB of RAM. Its performance might eventually lag behind newer models that are projected to use a newer processor from Qualcomm.

Moving on the good stuff, similar to the unique controls on the Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Diesel smartwatch allows you to scroll through the WearOS menu using the crown. The Diesel On Full Guard 2.5 is expected to launch later this year and carry an estimated $325 price tag.

Concrete USB Flash Drive By GreyMass

These days USB flash drives have become so common. Most of the ones that are on sale are usually made out of plastic. Nevertheless, there are a few options that border on the premium side crafted out of metal. Practically, the possibilities are endless when it comes to the material used. We welcome a design studio from Minsk, Belarus, that’s here to offer something unique that’s both stylish and durable–the GreyMass Concrete USB Flash Drive.

Instead of the usual stuff that most USB flash drives are made of, this item is encased in concrete. There are two storage sizes being offered: 16GB and 32GB. Honestly, we hope the manufacturer would add higher capacity variants later on.

Conventional portable data storage devices keep their USB connectors protected via a cap or sometimes a swivel mechanism. What you get with the concrete-coated flash drive is a cover that’s held in place by a magnet—it’s a handy method that securely covers the interface and easily comes off when you need to use the drive in a jiffy.

It measures 50 х 20 х 10 mm and weighs only 27 grams. The company uses a Kingston Data Traveler SE9 inside each concrete USB flash drive. You can request to have this made to order item cast in different shades of gray. There’s an option to have your name or company logo engraved on the exterior, or UV printed to keep the surface smooth.

How to Easily Remove Scratches from Your Watch Crystal

For watch lovers, a fresh scratch on an otherwise flawless crystal is a devastating sight. The feeling can be even worse on a brand-new watch, or one that just returned from servicing. But before you send your tainted timepiece back for a crystal replacement, you may want to consider a home remedy. First you need to determine what can be done — and that depends on the type of crystal you’ve scratched.

Up until the 1980s, nearly all watches came equipped with an acrylic crystal to protect the dial and hands. Acrylic is used for its low cost and its capacity to be polished. A trip to the watch forums in search of scratch-fix techniques for this crystal type will yield about a dozen different remedies. Everyone seems to have the “correct” way of doing it, when, in reality, it’s hard to go wrong as long as you follow directions. The most commonly endorsed polishing agents are Polywatch, Brasso, Displex and toothpaste. The process consists of (1) covering up the bezel with tape, so as not to damage it during polishing; and (2) using a soft polishing rag (or something similar), to work a small amount of your chosen substance into the scratch in a circular motion. In general, it should take a couple of minutes to get rid of the scratches, as long as they’re not too deep. If your watch has very deep scratches, it might be worth paying for a crystal replacement.

Although acrylic crystals are still used on less expensive watches, many manufacturers have moved on to mineral glass. Mineral glass is created with a melting process involving glass and hardening minerals, a process that creates a material seven times harder than acrylic and far more scratch and impact resistant. That’s all well and good, but unfortunately this hardness creates difficulties when it comes to polishing. Many watchmakers simply recommend replacing these crystals, as the cost is negligible when compared to the parts and labor involved in doing it yourself.

Sapphire crystal is used by the high-end watchmakers. Sapphire scores a solid 9 out of 10 on the Mohs mineral hardness scale, just below diamond, making it even more scratch resistant than mineral glass. With its awesome capabilities, sapphire comes at a premium. Depending on the kind of watch you own or where you go for repairs, a sapphire crystal replacement can run anywhere from $75 to $250. A little bit of research and some elbow grease can restore your crystal for less than $30. Even though sapphire is harder than mineral glass, the extra effort is worth the payoff. But before diving into our sapphire-polishing process, take note: this remedy should be reserved for crystals with an internal anti-reflective coating, unless you are okay with removing said coating. Additionally, this remedy works best for shallow scratches. Repairing deep scratches is much more labor intensive, and you can end up with a distorted crystal.

Step 1: Tape your bezel.

Protect your bezel from the diamond paste with masking tape, in the same way you would protect wood trim when painting a room.

Step 2: Begin buffing.

Apply a small amount of 3µ paste to the scratch, working it in a firm circular motion with the cloth. After a few minutes, you should start to see the scratch disappearing.

Step 3: Continue buffing.

Once the scratch has faded, wipe away the excess and apply the .25µ paste. Pick a new spot on your cloth and begin the same circular motion as before. This ultra-fine paste will give your crystal the glass-like finishing it once had. When you’re satisfied with the disappearing act, wipe away the excess paste and inspect your work.

Step 4: Repeat (if necessary).

If the scratch remains, rinse and repeat from steps two and three. If it’s gone, rinse and wipe away residue or fingerprints with a watch cloth.

Polar Vantage V & M Smartwatches

Polar has unveiled its two latest GPS-capable running smartwatches, called the Vantage V and M. Both were designed specifically for athletes and people who are serious about staying fit, letting them track their workouts, heart rate, and other biometrics as they exercise.

The Vantage V is the higher-end model of the two, with features like Precision Prime, an ultra-accurate heart rate monitor; and a so-called running power functionality, which combines metrics for runners that eliminates the need to use external sensors.

The Vantage M, on the other hand, is nearly the same as its more premium sibling, but it lacks the ability to track running power. It also only gives you 30 hours of training time, as opposed to the Vantage V’s 40 hours. The latter is the only model that has Recovery Pro and Training Load Pro, which are a pair of features that will monitor the athlete’s “training load” for each session, keeping tabs on things like tolerance and strain while providing an overview of recovery and training balance.

The Vantage V retails for $500, while the Vantage M retails for $280. You can go for the Vantage M (in black, white, or red) if you don’t mind having the Polar’s sophisticated set of tracking and biometric tools and just want an honest-to-goodness fitness watch. But you can splurge half a thousand dollars for the Vantage V (in black, white, or orange) if you want everything Polar has to offer. Your choice. Both smartwatches are available now at Polar.com.

Pioneer Flyfold Wallet

When it comes to finding the perfect wallet, we look for durability and comfort. The strong ones are usually made from leather and metal, with both being bulky and heavy. The Pioneer Flyfold Wallet, on the other hand, uses Future Form technology to create a lightweight and durable product that still looks new even after several uses.

This wallet is made from premium fabric with fibers 10 times stronger than steel per weight, which makes it thinner and stronger than leather and more comfortable to carry around.  Ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene blends with fine nylon ripstop to create a dense and tactile finish that repels water and dirt.

These materials make this EDC an ideal carrier for bills and cards because it is waterproof, machine-washable, and sweatproof. It makes this wallet suitable for everyday use and for everyone, even athletes.

Likewise, Pioneer used reinforced stitching method to ensure that the wallet does not burst or break down with prolonged use. Heat-welded construction replaced seams, while the same bar-tacks used in climbing gears replaced rivets in high-stress areas.

Design-wise, the Pioneer Flyfold Wallet has a minimalistic yet elegant appearance fit for any occasion. It features the familiar bi-fold design that can accommodate cards and bills. It has two internal RFID-secure card slots that can hold five cards each (10 in total) and with enough space to fan the cards out for easy access. This wallet can also accommodate full-size bills up to 80mm tall without folding.

How the Old-School Signet Ring Found a Modern Appeal

When Mona Jensen and her husband Morten Isachsen got married in 2010, neither one of them could find the perfect wedding band. And after an extensive search for something appropriate that felt personal, Jensen — the designer behind the Norweigan jewelry brand Tom Wood — and her fiance alighted on a pair of vintage signet rings. To commemorate their union, they had their wedding date engraved on the flat, oval surfaces of each one.

“After that, I started to like the weight and feeling of the wedding ring, it became an important part of my daily wear,” Jensen said. “So it was very natural to start out with signet rings as I knew them well by wearing one for years.”

Her first jewelry collection for Tom Wood, launched in 2013, was focused around “a modern interpretation of the rings,” she said. “They are still an important part of our collections.”

Cushion Inka Black Ring by Tom Wood $433

Fast forward a few years, and Jensen is far from the only jewelry maker offering the rings. Brands large and small have caught onto its appeal. And that might be because this recently trendy ring has a history older than the modern concept of trendiness.

Long before we suffered the irony of clicking a box to prove to our robot overlords that we are, in fact, flesh-and-blood humans, an engraved seal was mankind’s way to demonstrate that certain important documents were signed for and authenticated. And a signet ring was the tool by which many people were able to readily leave such an imprint.

Sterling Silver Multistone Ring by Foundwell Coming Soon

Signet rings, which have been worn by Ancient Egyptian royalty and modern rappers alike, are history’s first and most lasting mark of self-identification — the original signature. Historically, their bezels were set with an engraved relief of a family crest, or some other marking that would help to classify its wearer. These wearable stamps could be pressed into warm wax, leaving an impression that said, in effect, “I approve.”

“I like the historical aspect and tend to get a lot of inspiration from vintage pieces that have a bigger reason to be a part of a person’s life,” Jensen said.

For Tom Wood, Jensen offers a variety of signet ring styles, some smooth, some with whimsical markings, others decorated with coins and many inlaid with stones like turquoise, lapis or mother of pearl. Lots of other brands are also on board. From the subversive blank bezels offered by the French labels A.P.C. and Maison Martin Margiela to the Game of Thrones-leaning designs at David Yurman, there are endless options for guys looking to get into the trend. (And if you want to carve your crest or initials into the surface, you can still reach for clean, modern designs like the ones from Tiffany & Co.)

Sterling Silver Ring by TAKAHIROMIYASHITA THESOLOIST. $760

“Not so long ago, wearing jewelry was a pretty bold statement for a man, but we’ve noticed a significant increase in the offering for men, and in particular, with signet rings.”

The style has resurfaced throughout history in various iterations. Its best-known descendants, the class ring and the championship ring, serve the dual function of being decorative and proving membership to a specific club or institution. Which makes sense: these rings originally belonged almost exclusively to the noble classes, so they carry a reputation of exclusivity and serve as a not-so-subtle signifier of privilege. And while these days we don’t need to go to such extremes to show that we approve of a contract or graduated from a certain school, the signet ring is so recognizable and adaptable, especially in its purest form, that it’s still a key piece in the jewelry market.

Cigar Brushed Silver Ring by Miansai $95

“I think the signet ring is the entry point into men’s jewelry,” says Simon Spiteri, the senior buyer at the luxury online men’s retailer Mr Porter, noting that there are as many signet rings offered with decoration as without. “They often are simple and understated, so it’s not an overwhelming or intimidating purchase.”

And there are lots of options on the market right now. Earlier this year, a report from Reuters emphasized that the men’s luxury market was set to outpace womenswear in coming years, led by accessories and shoes. This proliferation of signet rings mirrors both that growth, but as well as changing attitudes toward what a guy can get away with wearing. “Not so long ago, wearing jewelry was a pretty bold statement for a man, but in the in the past five years, we’ve noticed a significant increase in the offering for men, and in particular, with signet rings,” says Spiteri.

Heirloom Sterling Silver Onyx Ring by David Yurman Coming Soon

In these times when the formerly understood status symbols are being upended — sneakers are now office-appropriate, slouchy track pants are being worn in lieu of selvedge denim — these sorts of throwbacks can be a sly way to broadcast a certain upper crust aura. But that’s not to suggest that every plugged-in millennial wearing one of these things is trying to go undercover as gentry. “I’d like to think consumers are thinking about sealing envelopes in wax with their signet rings, but it’s all about the style,” says Spiteri. “Today, you go on Instagram and see a range of guys like Jeff Goldblum, A$AP Rocky and Colin Firth wearing signet rings and think, ‘I can wear that.’ More and more, it’s become a wardrobe essential.”

Air Max 97 “Menta” By OFF-WHITE x Nike

Virgil Abloh is one of Nike’s best collaborators, having given us an entire collection inspired by tennis champ Serena Williams. Now, he’s working with Nike yet again to bring us a new iteration the Swoosh brand’s legendary Air Max 97 model — Menta.

Just look at that double grey overlay on the main body of the shoe. Plus that multi-colored Swoosh logo that flirts with a slight ombre effect — utterly beautiful, yet smartly understated. The Swoosh is paired with Off-White branding (Abloh’s fashion company) and motifs as well. Coupled with the designer’s signature Helvetica typeface used along the medial sides, shoelaces, and angular laces tab, the shoe looks pretty minimalist overall, which is mainly because of it being a classic grey Air Max unit, topped off with a clear outsole.

The “Menta” colorway was unveiled a while back alongside a black one, both of them highly reminiscent of Abloh’s “The Ten” collection, a similarly eye-catching lineup. Nike officially put it up for sale this past October. We can’t wait for what the Swoosh brand and Abloh have in store for all of us sneakerheads out here.

Neither Abloh nor Nike has said anything about these kicks, however, so we can only speculate as to when they’ll be released. Various publications tout Nov. 10 as the official release date, but you should take that with a grain of salt, of course. Pricing is also unclear at this point, although they’ll most likely hover around $190 to $200. Check out the sneakers in detail below.

Bell & Ross BR-X2 Skeleton Tourbillon Micro Rotor Watch

Avant-garde designs are plentiful when it comes to luxury watches. However, there are instances wherein the approach becomes too aggressive. It reaches to the point that it becomes unwieldy for people who prefer a more conventional appeal. As much as we appreciate these often unorthodox masterpieces, we can’t help but swoon over a particular understated but elegant timepiece—the Bell & Ross BR-X2 Skeleton Tourbillon Micro Rotor watch.

What immediately caught our attention was the stainless steel and sapphire construction of its case. The skeletonized dial flaunts the watch’s complications such as the intricate tourbillion that steadily ticks away. The sloping edges of each crystal panel angle perfectly to seamlessly blend with the metal. The assembly measures 42.5 mm in diameter and only 9 mm thick. It pairs nicely with a grey alligator strap alongside a double-trigger folding clasp.

A clear view of its case reveals a micro-rotor that powers its BR-CAL.381 automatic movement. it is machined from Reconit 18, an alloy that contains 95% tungsten. The dial’s hands and indices feature Super-LumiNova applications that help you see the time in low light conditions. Upon closer inspection, you can make out that each interlocking piece inside sports meticulous beveling for that extra detail. Overall, the Bell & Ross BR-X2 Skeleton Tourbillon Micro Rotor is one handsome timepiece that we would love to grace our wrists.

Let’s face it, we are all innately curious about the sky. We want to know what’s beyond our planet and what lies across the vastness of space. In fact, the brand just launched its latest line of kicks, called the Givenchy JAW collection. They arrived at Givenchy boutiques this past October. All units are made from luxe leathers, suedes, and mesh detailings. In other words, exactly the things you would expect from Givenchy.

Top 20 Men’s Golf Shoes

H

ave you recently developed a passion for golf and all things related to it? Does nothing excite you more than teeing off and then working your way down the fairway trying to put the ball in the hole with the least amount of moves possible?

Whether you’re competing with your buddies, members of the club you’ve recently joined or your personal best, there’s no denying the lowkey, but exciting thrill that comes with golf.

Have you been struggling lately to master the basics of hitting a brick wall performance-wise? It may have something to do with the type of shoes you’re wearing. Do you wear proper golf shoes or trainers? If you answered with the former, it may be that you just need to try a different brand or model of golf shoes. However, if you answered with the latter, it may be time to invest in a quality pair of men’s golf shoes.

We would only ever recommend golf shoes anyway. At Men’s Gear, we’re incredibly excited to share some great golf shoes with you, but first, there’s some important questions we need to address.

What Are the Benefits of Golf Shoes?

The above question is often asked by people wondering if golf shoes are actually worth investing in or if they’re a waste of money. Like any other athletic shoe, they’ve been designed to help athletes take part in their specific discipline.

First and foremost, the main reason for wearing sports specific shoes is to avoid injury being caused. In the beginning, many newbie golfers avoid investing in them to begin with, but as they continue playing the sport, they should consider paying out for golfing shoes. Along with the safety aspect, there’s other benefits, as outlined below.

Sturdy – Golf shoes have sharper tongs and wider-tracked rubber soles that stop you from losing your footing on the grass. The materials used throughout the shoes make them lightweight, but with a certain firmness. Compared to other shoes, they provide sturdy support for the arch of your foot.

Comfort and Support – Golf shoes tend to have additional padding that provides shock absorption. The support for your midfoot is necessary when you’re driving the ball because you end strokes on the balls of your feet. Even though they contain leather, they are still comfortable and flexible which are essential properties when walking around a long course.

Ventilation – Most shoes for golf are made from fabrics and materials that improve ventilation. When they’re made with Gore-Tex they help your feet breathe, eliminate sweating and absorb moisture. Charcoal and polyurethane are utilized in the footbed of some shoes along with other moisture absorbing components. Polyurethane, in particular, is known to cool and warm feet, as necessary.

Spiked Golf Shoes – Some golf shoes have spikes that give you a better grip while you walk. The new tech used to make these spikes helps keep golfers going and enables them to make the sharp turns needed when striking the ball. Some shoes have twist spikes that can be easily detached from the outer sole that provides stability and grip on various surfaces found on golf courses.

Spikeless Golf Shoes – It’s more the ground than the golfer that benefits from spikeless shoes. They don’t damage the course as much, but provide the same level of support, comfort and sturdiness of spiked shoes. They’re also designed to spread the load of your body weight and give you enhanced flexibility. Generally, they’re also less expensive and generally you’ll find that most courses require golfers to wear shoes that don’t have spikes.

Trainers Vs Golf Shoes

When it comes down to it, whether you should choose regular trainers or golf shoes will depend on a number of different factors. Predominately, the main issue will be whether or not the club and course you’re aiming to play on prefers its players to wear golf shoes or is more relaxed. Generally, they are not. The one thing many have a problem with, as highlighted above is the wearing of spiked golf shoes. Trainers are frowned upon in most clubs and courses because there’s usually a strict dress code that you must adhere to.

There’s also some of the benefits mentioned that come from wearing golf shoes. Trainers may be fine on a day to day basis, but when you need shoes suited for the movements of your feet and body navigating over the various types of terrain, you’re better sticking to golf shoes. They provide the support and stability you need.

Things to Consider When Buying Golf Shoes

As noted earlier, there’s quite a number of different golf shoes available these days, which makes it difficult choosing a pair that are best for you. Therefore, let’s discuss some things to consider when buying golf shoes, to help you make the right choice.

Price – Golf shoes vary considerably and can be anything from $35 to $300 and even more. Generally speaking, like most things in life, you get the quality you pay for in golf shoes. Inexpensive golf shoes, for example, have synthetic leather and more expensive shoes are made from high-quality calfskin leather. There are also numerous features that either are or aren’t included depending on price. Generally speaking, as you’d probably imagine, the costlier pairs will last longer and will even have a positive impact on your game.

How Regularly You Play Golf – This is the one factor that’ll have the most bearing on the amount of money you spend on your golf shoes. If you’re only going to play golf a couple of times a year, it’s hardly worth investing in an extremely expensive pair.

The Fit – It’s important, and should go without saying, that you buy shoes that are the right size. This is important especially when buying online, as some customers leave feedback telling future buyers to order a size smaller or larger than they usually would – due to sizing issues in manufacturing.

Synthetic or Leather – The materials used to build them is also something you should consider when choosing golf shoes, as this will greatly affect the price. Synthetic leather golf shoes are less expensive than ones that have been made from the finest calfskin leather. They’ll also be less comfortable than calfskin leather shoes, fit less comfortably and offer less stretch. Synthetic leather shoes also don’t have any waterproofing whereas leather varieties do.

Now that we’ve answered the important questions in life…well, when you’re looking for the right golf shoes, it’s time to actually look at the best men’s golf shoes on the market.

10) Puma Grip Fusion Golf Shoes

It’s come to our attention that we may have been a little on the dismissive side about Puma earlier. Puma do in fact manufacture great golf shoes, as these Puma Grip Fusion shoes attest to.

Take, for example, the foam-dual density inner sole, which provides not just one but two forms of unique cushioning. This helps to give you a more tailored fit, the unbelievable comfort that Puma consider to be unrivaled and incredible durability.

The Fusion foam-mix comprises of highly-responsive rubber and EVA foam that will ensure you feel comfortable and raring to go, no matter how long it takes you to get to the 18th hole. Even if you’re on the toughest course, you won’t feel it.

These also benefit from having what Puma refer to as Organic Traction. The multi-directional lugs are placed at strategic points with the goal of increasing grip and traction to give you better control and power when you swing. Did we mention that these also provide 1-year waterproofing?

11) Puma Ignite Pwrsport Golf Shoes

Power is important in the world of golf, so you know that a shoe is called Pwrsport and features several components using the ‘power’ word, it means business. And boy do these babies mean business!

Where to begin? The PWRCAGE saddle is made from TPU and provides you with adequate support without compromising on the weight. These are an especially lightweight pair of golf shoes. Next, there’s the amazingly thin PWRFRAME reinforcement that Puma have utilized in the shoe’s most high-stress areas.

The Ignite of the name refers to the foam that offers you all the stability, comfort and high-energy return you need when you’re up against the best of your golfing opponents on those tough courses.

Another notable feature is the GripZone Traction outer sole. Aptly named, this ensures you’re not going anywhere. Regardless of the weather conditions, when you tee off, make those complicated saves from the bunker or have to clear 15ft in one fell swoop.

Puma may just have outdone themselves and raised the bar too high for their own good with this shoe and we’re grateful that they did. We think you might be too.

HOLE IN ONE

Okay dudes, you now know as much as we do about the best of the best of the best, when it comes to golf shoes. Whether you’re a rank newcomer, a seasoned amateur or an ice hockey enforcer that finds his calling in life, albeit through tirade of tirade of swearing and shouting (See, Happy Gilmore, a rarity in that it’s a funny Adam Sandler film), the shoes we’ve highlighted will help you meet your true potential.

Full disclosure, as ever with athletic and sports-specific shoes, although they’re undeniably necessary, it’s worth remembering an important point. They won’t turn you into Rory McIlroy or Tiger Woods. They won’t even transform you into a rubbish golfer. If you’re already skilful at this game, a good pair of shoes will complement your pre-existing talents and help you to push yourself further.

They’ll allow you the chance to enjoy the game without worrying about slipping on the wet grass. . Nobody wants to slip when they are teeing off, even if you’re playing in torrential rain and you’re pretty sure it’s excusable. Nobody wants to be stuck in the bunker for days because you don’t have the traction necessary to get behind the ball properly to chip it out.

So, rather than expecting a miracle, expect a good pair of shoes that’ll make you feel like you’re walking on clouds, but with a firm and locked-in grip on the ground beneath your feet to make each shot last. Just don’t break a club like the aforementioned Happy Gilmore, because that’s a one-way ticket to the outside parking lot of your favorite golf club.

However, if you do decide to go ahead with it, YouTube it and send us a link. Please and thank you!

This Unique Japanese Brand Just Made Its U.S. Debut

The Japanese brand Gaijin Made just showed up stateside with an installation and American debut collection at 180 the Store in New York City. Previously available only in Japan, the brand offers handmade clothing and accessories inspired by textiles from around the world. The collection is part of the same company that crafts garments for respected indigo-centric brand Blue Blue Japan and is influenced by vintage Burkina Faso fabrics, Indian Kantha embroidery and Peruvian hand knitting.

The collection ranges in price $85 to $723 and will be available starting tonight — at the installation’s opening reception — through the end of November at 180 the Store in Tribeca. Before the opening event, we caught up with Rina Shingu, Seilin and Co. International Sales Division Manager, to learn about the inspiration behind the garments, the unique nature of hand-woven African fabric and the brand’s ongoing mission.

Q: What was the inspiration for starting Gaijin Made?
A: Upon seeing various delicate handcraft techniques from around the world and the passion that goes into it, an idea to combine such handcraft methods and fine basic garments came to us.

Q: What crafts from around the world are you drawn to and what makes them special?
A: We produce garments from various materials; for instance, African vintage fabric, Thailand’s hand-woven fabric, Batik and indigo dyed textiles, just to name a few. As well, we continue searching for new methods. The authentic handcraft methods and textiles are what makes simple clothes special and unprecedentedly unique.

Q: What happens to a classic men’s garment when you incorporate these world textiles and techniques into it?
A: We often combine standard garments with world textiles and patterns that bring a piece of clothing more charm. Classical men’s garments fused with handcraft techniques gain a feeling of authenticity and innovation. Many of the crafted designs, as well, are meant to develop a distinct quality through time depending on the wearer’s lifestyle, thus becoming one and only.

Q: Are there any current pieces you’re especially proud of?
A: We enjoy designing standard cut garments from African vintage fabric. It is a special fabric that has an exceptional feeling to it, different from denim. The African vintage fabric is hand wreathed, woven and dyed, therefore there are no two pieces that are identical. We intend to continue making garments from this outstanding textile for years to come.

Q: What does the future have in store for the Gaijin Made?
A: Our garments are steadily gaining attention from various people, whether men or women, who seek lasting standard garments made from unique textiles. So far we have found various distinctive handcraft methods, but we keep searching for new interesting fabrics and designs.

In the future, we hope to create our own one-of-a-kind fabric. It has become our mission to find and incorporate outstanding designs and textiles with comfortable clothes that could be worn by anyone around the world. To achieve this, we are working on establishing ourselves internationally in the fashion industry.

Inside the Stores Shaping the Future of Brick and Mortar Retail

From Issue Seven of Gear Patrol Magazine.

It’s hard to remember now, almost a decade after it was founded, but Aether‘s first physical store wasn’t a shop. At least not in the traditional sense. It was a trailer. When the brand started offering minimalist technical apparel in 2009, it sold its wares through a few wholesale accounts and on its website. But then, after a couple of years of growth, the time came to find a way to reach new audiences. So its founders, Jonah Smith and Palmer West, customized an Airstream, dubbed it the “Aetherstream” and started towing it around America. “Our initial approach was this mobile pop-up store that could go around the country and not look like a typical pop-up,” Smith said.

The success of the Aetherstream led to stand-alone stores: one in a traditional building in New York and another in San Francisco, where instead of using standard construction techniques, the brand stacked three shipping containers on top of each other to house its clothing. “We transitioned into our own store at the same time we transitioned out of traditional wholesale accounts,” West said. “We found that if we could present our story, we could dramatically outperform what our hundred-and-some-odd wholesale accounts were doing for us.” These physical locations gave the brand a chance to share its design ethos, contextualizing the clothing in the process. “If you like our stores, you’re probably going to like our clothes,” West said.

Aether is one of a handful of brands changing guys’ perceptions of going shopping — and it’s part of a small class of stores doing that without adding too many superfluous details to the shopping experience.

Aether’s San Francisco store is made up of shipping containers stacked on top of each other.

“There’s a certain integrity that a brand should maintain,” said Garen Barsegian, the 32-year-old founder of New York’s Whooden Collective, a multidisciplinary creative firm that creates content for media companies, agencies and brands. “The idea of adding extra things to stores is a marketer’s idea or an accountant’s idea — those are the wrong people to be making choices like that for a brand.” While some features add to the product experience and can help shopping decisions — like treadmills in the Nike store — others don’t. “Would I go to the Nike store to play basketball? No,” Barsegian said.

And he would know. In his line of work, Barsegian has to look his best — and think deeply about how to help brands attract new customers while keeping current ones interested. But because he frequently works twelve-hour days, he has to limit how much time he spends in physical stores. “I want to make life as easy as possible,” he said. “For things that are high-dollar-amount items that require you to feel and to touch, I prefer to go into the store. Once you have your favorites, it’s easy to just reorder [online].”

It’s part of why he does a portion of his shopping at Mr Porter. “It’s nice when you can have something same-day messengered to your office. You can try it on, you don’t have to think about it and then they take it away,” he said. That ease makes it all the more challenging to get guys into stores.

“If someone comes into your space, and they feel good, they’re going to want to come back and spend time in there.”

“The most important thing is that it’s quick, it’s instinctive,” said Toby Bateman, the Managing Director for Mr Porter. “When we look at the journey the customer takes on-site, it’s got to be really simple.” When Mr Porter launched in 2011, it was one of the first e-commerce sites dedicated to men’s clothing. It was able to tap into the resources of The Net-a-Porter Group, its female-centric parent company, to offer an unparalleled user experience with great service, an intuitive interface, personalized packaging and inspiring on-site content. The brand offers a staggering array of clothing from high-end luxury brands to accessible casual brands and, most importantly, launches new products three times a week.

“Physical stores don’t tend to launch new products every week,” Bateman said. “They get a delivery at the beginning of the season, they put all the stock out on the shop floor and they merchandise it.” The rolling release process is integral to Mr Porter’s success and has created a new way for men to think about clothing. “That has caused a seismic shift in the way that men approach shopping,” he said. “It’s gone from being traditionally a need-based activity for a lot of men, to men now getting really engaged in clothing.”

It’s a change that’s led shoppers to expect even more from the physical stores they visit. Before starting at Mr Porter in 2010, Bateman worked in department stores for 15 years, watching the industry evolve with the rise of e-commerce. “I think there’s more interesting product, it’s more dynamic,” he said. “There are more opportunities to be individual and to make a statement for your own particular style and to have the freedom and the resources to help you develop that style.”

Filson’s New York City store was thoughtfully filled with art, artifacts and materials from the Pacific Northwest, where the brand was founded.

With online stores offering an incredible assortment of products and unparalleled service, what’s the purpose and the function of physical stores today? It’s a question that’s more pressing than ever before. In April of 2018, CoStar Group, a leading tracker of commercial real estate, reported that retailers in the United States had closed 77 million square feet of store space, priming the industry to set a new record for store closures. (In total, 2017 saw 105 million square feet close.)

But there’s a bright spot in the style space. Brands that sell clothing realize that stores can no longer just be places where you make a transaction. They’re important stages where brands and retailers can tell their stories and help their products stand apart — and make the argument that they’re more in tune with you than their competitors. And as a result, more thought is going into store design and experience than ever before: brands are commissioning local artists for interiors and are integrating cafés, bars and barbershops to further cater to customer needs. While this shake-up in the market creates an interesting challenge for businesses, it’s overwhelmingly positive for male consumers.

Under the leadership of its chief creative director Alex Carleton, Seattle-based Filson has overhauled its in-store experiences. “It would be a very different experience to go to Yellowstone and stay in a modern white box brought to you by Marriott, as opposed to staying in the Old Faithful Inn.” he said. “That’s how we looked at creating retail for Filson. We wanted to create spaces that reflected the quality and the heritage and the history of the brand.”

“Going into a store, trying a garment on, feeling it, seeing how it fits you — that’s an emotional experience.”

In 2015, Filson opened its flagship store in Seattle, a soaring space with a vaulted ceiling supported by massive wooden beams. The unique space, opened to coincide with the brand’s 120th anniversary, feels more like a modern hunting lodge than a place where you’d go to buy a briefcase.

Following that success, Filson opened a New York City flagship this fall. “I can safely say it will not look like any other place in New York City,” Carleton vowed. And he might be right. After all, how many other stores use reclaimed Douglas fir, sourced from an 1850s barn once housed on a fourth-generation family-run cattle ranch in Ashland, Oregon, in their entryways? Featuring traditional wood joinery, the seven and a half tons of reclaimed barn wood is complemented by art from Pacific Northwest artists Aleph Geddis, Alexis Hilliard, David Fjeld and Jeffrey Samudosky. The 6,000 square-foot, two-story store includes a ground-floor men’s department complete with a bar. There’s another bar, as well as a sitting room, in the women’s department on the mezzanine level.

“We don’t reference other retail stores,” Carleton said. “We reference museums, we reference galleries, we reference parks, we reference recreational sites. We reference everything but retail.”

The focus on a unique experience that is not derivative of other shops is key to the brand’s success as it continues to plan other flagship stores in major cities. As Filson forges ahead in the digital generation, Carleton continues to champion the brand’s deep history, creating distinctive experiences for customers. “I think too many retailers are focused on trying to be all things to all people, and we absolutely are not that brand,” he said. “And I think in today’s market, when everything is available, really the only thing you have is your own personality.”

Though Filson is drawing on a rich history, the goal is something far less tangible. “We’re focusing on the feeling of the space as opposed to just the metrics of the space,” said Carlton. “If somebody comes into your space and they feel good, and the people are personable, and the energy is right, and the character of the place is great, you’re going to want to come back and you’re going to want to spend time in there,” he said.

“You’re going to want to connect with the brand,” Carleton added, “and the way you connect is by walking out with something in your hand.”

Warby Parker’s first store feels more like a fun library than an antiseptic optical shop.

Or, alternatively, by going into a store and letting a sales associate place an online order for you, to be delivered to your home or office later. That’s the way it works at Warby Parker. The eight-year-old direct-to-consumer eyewear brand was founded as an e-commerce operation. And while you can still buy its glasses online, it now has 75 physical stores across the United States and Canada.

“I think we surprised a lot of people when we started opening stores,” said Warby Parker cofounder and co-CEO David Gilboa. “At the time, there was this perception that e-commerce was really the wave of the future and that all physical retail was going away.” But the idea to open brick-and-mortar came from customer demand. People wanted a chance to try different frames and have face-to-face conversations about prescriptions and optics. “We’ve seen really great synergy between having a great online presence and a great off-line presence,” Gilboa said. “When we open a store in a new market, we see an immediate spike in [online] sales in that geography and a sustained elevated lift in sales in those cities.”

Warby Parker made a conscious choice to showcase the brand’s wide range of affordable eyewear in a nontraditional setting. “When you walk into one of our stores, you’ll immediately notice it looks nothing like a typical optical shop,” Gilboa said. “Instead of having our frames behind lock-and-key in cases, we have all our frames out on open library shelves.” The brand merges elements of online efficiency within a physical space, and in-store advisors utilize customers’ past shopping history to offer optimal service.

With plans to open another 15 retail stores by the end of 2018, Gilboa is confident about the future of brick-and-mortar retail. “There’s always going to be a desire for humans to interact with other humans,” he said. “Our goal is to make sure that we have a product and experience that is convenient and engaging, and it also has to be integrated with our online experience.”

One half of Unionmade’s San Francisco store is dedicated to tried-and-true staples, while the other features more experimental clothing

But it’s not only online start-ups that are finding success in this new landscape. San Francisco’s Unionmade, founded in 2009, is one of a group of smaller multi-brand retailers that have managed to keep their doors open, and that’s largely due to a focus on its customers’ needs.

“We have a really strong brick-and-mortar business because we have a differentiated experience that’s being offered,” said cofounder Todd Barket, who attributed that strength to loyal customers from before Unionmade offered e-commerce. After spending 20 years at Gap as the head of visual merchandising, Barket created a store that merchandised its products around ideas, presenting different points of view and a mix of well-made brands. The store’s inventory has evolved over the past decade from an assortment of denim-centric heritage brands to include a number of complementary contemporary designers. And following a recent renovation, these newer styles are displayed in their own part of the store.

“I think there are people who have moved beyond denim and button-down oxford shirts and t-shirts who want something even more unique or more interesting,” Barket said. “I wear a sweatshirt so I shop both sides [of the store], but I may want a weird drop-crotch wrap chino pant from Prospective Flow. We’re all about mixing everything.”

“There’s always going to be a desire for humans to interact with other humans.”

Unionmade built its own e-commerce store in 2011 after numerous requests from customers. The site promotes the brand’s point of view with a much wider customer base, and in hand with social media, strengthens the overall business. “I’m convinced that if we didn’t have online, our brick-and-mortar business wouldn’t be what it is,” Barket said.

But for him, there’s a major point of difference between e-commerce and brick-and-mortar. “Going to a store, trying a garment on, feeling it, seeing how it fits you — I think that’s an emotional experience,” he said. “I think shopping online is something out of convenience; it’s like checking boxes and kind of getting things done.”

But for many growing brands trying to gain new customers, traditional storefronts with long-term leases don’t seem like a strong investment. In 2017, Aether began experimenting with a temporary modular store on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The set-up consists of dressing rooms, full-length mirrors, tables, checkouts, shelves, racks and displays, all of which fits into a Sprinter van. “It gives us the flexibility and the ability to be in front of a new group of people in a quicker period of time without the financial commitment of a traditional store,” Smith said. Along with a five- or ten-year leases, retail stores normally require costly interior construction before opening for business. Aether finds short-term leases and circumvents initial build-out costs with its modular system. “We can paint a space and be selling clothes within forty-eight hours,” Smith said.

The modular store was so popular that Aether has plans to use another similar system on the West Coast. “This is a way that we can try neighborhoods, cities, areas where there’s a group of people coming that might not be familiar with the brand,” Smith said. “And one of the big jobs of retail these days is to get in front of people so they know what the brand is.” The success of Aether’s modular store has proven that beautiful design and flexible spaces aren’t mutually exclusive, which creates exciting possibilities for the future of retail in underserved markets across the country.

Dita A/W ’18 Eyewear Collection

Luxury eyewear brand Dita finally brings us its latest collection, and as typical of its lineup, this year’s new crop of stylish glasses are nothing short of stunning, and you’ll be surprised that there’s even a bit of Art Deco thrown in there for good measure.

It’s clear that for this collection, Dita felt compelled to experiment with some new shapes and silhouettes — creating fashion-forward looks has always been part of its identity, so this should come as no shock to fans. One result of those experiments is the latest frame in their Mach series with the sixth iteration. The design boasts a sleek set of lenses on a titanium frame for a sophisticated and seamless look. And some of them incorporate the Tessel, a frame with a unique saddle bridge swing arm system that adapts to whoever is wearing them.

But it doesn’t hurt to look back, and if any brand knows that, it’s Dita. So it didn’t forget about its most iconic designs — you’ll find some of them revamped for this lineup. The brand always impresses when it comes to bringing some of its signature looks for the modern crowd, and these new glasses are further proof of that.

You can find the latest collection below, and you may visit Dita’s online shop to get yourself some fancy new eyewear right this instant. As always, expect to break bank if you’re planning to get any or all of these models, but that’s the price you pay luxury eyewear that’s simply like no other.

These Basics from Goldwin and Geoff McFetridge Are Too Cool to Pass Up

Japanese outdoor brand Goldwin just released a lifestyle collection with L.A.-based artist Geoff McFetridge. The Hokkaido Fox: Technical Tailor collection features a range of basics including tees and knits adorned with McFetridge’s drawings. The artist’s inspiration for the collection came from a chance encounter with a fox while skiing in the backcountry of Hokkaido, a moment which coincidentally embodies Goldwin’s commitment to nature and movement.

Each of the wardrobe essentials in the collection is emblazoned with the Hokkaido Fox motif and features technical constructions that Goldwin is known for. The most inexpensive shirt online — the Crew Neck Short Sleeves ($80) — is cut from high-performance Dacron QD fabric which has a UFO shaped cross section that absorbs sweat and drys quickly. Other tees in the release are made with similar technical materials: a cotton surface with a Dacron QD liner and a cotton yarn blended with Maxifresh. The most expensive piece available online — the Crew Neck Knit 7GG ($290) — is made from luxurious wool from Zegna Baruffa in Italy and is produced in Gosen City, Niigata, a Japanese city renowned for its knitwear manufacturing.

So if you’re in the market for some new basics, the Hokkaido Fox: Technical Tailor pieces are too cool to pass up. They’re not inexpensive, but they’re made from highly functional materials and feature some intriguing drawings — a winning combination worth the investment.

ACRONYM x Nike Air Presto

Now available is Nike and ACRONYM’s latest collaboration, which marks the debut of three new colorways for their Nike Air Presto Mid lineup.

You can choose between “Racer Pink/Photo Blue,” “Dynamic Yellow/White,” and “Cool Grey/Black,” all of which veer away from the darker and sleeker tones of the same kicks from 2016. The new roster incorporates some pretty bold color choices, to tremendous effect. Nike and ACRONYM co-founder Errolson Hugh made use of color combinations that smudge the line between sporty and casual, giving you a fine blend of trendy but also a little bit experimental.

These limited edition kicks are now available globally via Nike SNKRS, ACRONYM at $200 apiece. Better act fast if you want one, though. The original Acronym x Nike Air Presto Mid was an enormous hit, and we have every reason to believe this lineup will follow its predecessor’s footsteps. Want to know just how popular those kicks are? There are currently unofficial sellers marking them up to ridiculous prices — some even go as high as $750.

Like the 2016 collection, the 2018 ones feature neoprene uppers with extended ankle collars, dual pull tabs, plus a zipper on the heel — a small but nice touch. And as we’ve mentioned already, these kicks are bolder than their 2016 counterparts, featuring graphic print detailing all over the lace cage, toe cap, and heel, which give the kicks a tad bit more flair. Not that they need those finishing touches, but they’re still a lovely addition.
