How to Care for Leather Boots in Winter

Leather boots are built to handle any conditions. Whether you are building a coffee table in your woodshed, constructing a smoker from scratch in your backyard, hiking the Appalachian Trail, heading out to dinner with your partner or commuting to work in the snow, they can handle just about anything — but only if you care for them properly. To find out the best practice for maintaining your prized full-grain leather boots this winter, we spoke with Greg Lamont, a cobbler at Bend, Oregon’s Gear Fix, a shop that specializes in servicing and repairing outdoor gear.

Consider what you will use the boots for. Before you even set out to do anything to your boots, consider what you will be using them for. Leather boots aren’t waterproof on their own, so if you are going to be trekking through deep slush and puddles, your standard leather Redwing might not be the best option. “There are watertight types of construction, particularly with leather shoes and boots, but only a waterproof liner built into a shoe (think Gore-Tex, but there are plenty of others) can guarantee waterproof performance,” Lamont says. “That being said, a waterproof boot doesn’t breathe as well. So while your foot will stay dry outside, it may get moist from perspiration during activity.”

Clean your boots. “Cleaning is important to keep the leather from getting clogged up, dried out, and cracked due to dirt, mud and other clogging contaminants,” Lamont says. “Leather is skin, so the pores need to be kept unclogged in order for it to retain a supple quality.” To clean your boots, use a brush and a leather cleaner. Remove the laces for the best access to the entire boot. Scrub until you are confident that the pores are cleaned. Use another brush or rag to remove any excess leather cleaner.

Moisturize the leather. After cleaning, it is important to moisturize and condition the leather. Failing to do so will leave the leather prone to clogging and will shorten the life of your boot. “The other component is re-moisturizing, since the leather will become dry over time no matter what,” Lamont says. “I really like a beeswax solution like Obenauf’s or Montana Pitch Blend.” Lamont recommends a wax over an oil because “boot oil gives the boot a moist-looking finish, but it actually clogs the pores of the leather and decreases the life of the material.”

Consider a seal or waterproofing wax. “There are different waterproofing solutions like Sno Seal out there that claim to waterproof the boot by treating the outside,” Lamont says. “These have varying degrees of effectiveness and depend on how well they have been applied by the user. Not a bad way to go for a bargain fix, but nothing can give you a waterproof guarantee that isn’t already built into the boot.” If you are confident in your abilities to thoroughly cover the boot — and have enough patience to apply multiple coats — break out the Sno Seal or Nikwax’s Waterproofing Wax for Leather. Remember though, if you are looking for a completely waterproof solution, search out a boot with a waterproof bootie sewn in.

Repeat. Throughout the winter, depending on how often you use your boots and what you subject them to, they may need to be cleaned and moisturized again. “It’s important to remember that winter can be a very dry time in terms of humidity,” Lamont says. These conditions can lead to cracking, so be sure to maintain your boots throughout the winter season.

CEO Sunglasses By Alexander Wang & Gentle Monster

Gentle Monster has collaborated with legendary fashion icon Alexander Wang on a new range of luxury eyewear, nicknamed the “CEO” lineup. The pieces were initially shown off at Wang’s FW18 presentation this past February, featuring fully acetate frames with CEO decals on the temples.

The CEO sunglasses were one of the main highlights of Wang’s show, which is saying something considering practically every piece you see in a Wang show deserves its own headline. The CEO glasses are available in three colorways: red, yellow, and black. Along with the CEO label, each pair also shows off Alexander Wang x Gentle Monster branding.

If you want to get more specific, here are the details: The front of the frame measures 144.8mm, while the side is a tad bit longer at 151.2mm. The lens are 51mm wide and 28.7mm high. You can get one now for $295 apiece.

As for the aesthetic of the CEO Sunglasses, there’s nothing special here. Make no mistake — they’re still very pretty sunglasses, and having Wang’s name on each one guarantees that. The Best Cashmere Sweaters for $100 or Less

Over the past couple of centuries, cashmere has earned a reputation as one of the top luxury fibers for knitwear. That status is not unwarranted. Cashmere — the fine undercoat fibers of the cashmere goat — is incredibly soft, very warm and not as abundant as other animal fibers like sheep’s wool. While many cashmere sweaters cost in excess of $500, and it’s not surprising to see examples eclipsing $1,000, there has, in recent years, been an influx of affordable cashmere sweaters on the market. Most of these sweaters are produced by relatively young brands and top out at $100.

As the nature of cashmere has been tied so closely to exclusivity and luxury, these affordable garments upend conventional thoughts surrounding the fiber. So to get a better grasp on what the actual value of the fiber, we talked with Jeffrey Silberman, the Chairperson of the Textile Development and Marketing Department at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

According to Silberman, there are a number of aspects that affect the quality of the fiber, and in turn, the price. There are many different grades of cashmere and four primary types: black, brown, red and white. “The darker the cashmere is when it starts out, the less rare it is,” he said. “But it’s considered lower cashmere in the cashmere markets because it does have to be bleached and that’s where you get the fiber damage.”

Along with the grade, the fineness of the fiber has a significant effect on the price. According to the U.S. Wool Products Labeling Act of 1939, the average diameter of cashmere fibers in a knit product should not exceed 19 microns, and it should not contain more than three percent of fibers that exceed 30 microns. Generally, the finer the fiber, the higher the price. But, the best cashmere fibers also display a superior quality overall. “[The fibers] are going to be smoother, they’re going to be more lustrous and they’re going to be stronger in the more expensive cashmere,” Silberman said.

Companies offering affordable cashmere sweaters often utilize fibers that aren’t the highest grade and don’t disclose the details of the material they use. “Where you’ll see the difference is if you have beautiful long fiber cashmere,” said Silberman. “It’s going to feel better, it’s going to look better and it’s going to clean better because it’s don’t going to lint out fibers. The shorter, coarser cashmere is going to lend itself to the cheaper products.” For apparel companies, shorter cashmere is cheaper to buy, cheaper to process and still allows for the “100% Cashmere” label. Few companies offering affordable cashmere, save Everlane, actually reveal the staple length of fibers used in the yarns of the sweaters.

Another factor that influences price is the country of origin. While Mongolia and China both produce excellent cashmere, companies can source more affordable cashmere from Turkey, Iran and India. In addition, market forces can enable brands to produce inexpensive sweaters, creating cycles where affordable cashmere sweaters come in and go out. “If [fiber dealers] are oversupplied and they need to get rid of their excess inventory, that may have something to do with it,” Silberman said.

So though companies may not use the highest grade cashmere in inexpensive cashmere sweaters, they’re still using cashmere and it’s still a great fiber. For Silberman, a telling moment in his view of fiber came when he was working on a project on cashmere identity for the Mongolian Cashmere FibreMark Society in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. “The people in Ulaanbaatar don’t have a lot of money — they live on the steppes — and yet every single one of them will wear cashmere. If you told them that they should wear sheep’s wool, they basically think that that’s something to insulate a pipe with,” he said. “And I found out from there that you can wash cashmere with dishwashing liquid or shampoo with conditioner, and that they look at cashmere as ‘It’s really cold here and we need something that’s really warm. It’s a functional, utilitarian thing and we’re happy that people want to buy it and sell it for $500 sweaters.’”

With that in mind, a high price and respected provenance should not necessarily be requisites for your own cashmere purchase. “Really what comes down to is that you like the sweater and you like the way it feels,” Silberman said. “If you’re going to take your sweaters and hang them on the wall, that’s one thing. But if you’re getting them to wear, and you like it, I’m not sure that you care if it’s going to cost as much.”

The mesh upper provides some of the best breathability of any shoe on the market right now and makes them look frickin’ cool. A modified herringbone pattern has been used on the rubber outer sole for additional durability and traction. While they feel very comfortable around your foot.

They could probably do with additional padding, but we still think they’re the nuts!

We’re sorry, but we’ve ran out of basketball shoes to talk about. That’s it. We’re done. Finito. Completed. The task they say in Spanish was a ‘trabajo bien hecho’. That’s for all our Spanish readers. What have we learned?

There’s a lot of basketball shoes out there, and even more we didn’t cover.

Honestly, dudes, it’s like an iceberg. You know what they say about icebergs? No, not that they’re extremely cold and hostile places to be and that wearing basketball shoes on them, regardless of whatever amount of traction and grip they have, are not ideal if you want to say dry and warm.

No, what we have learned, we hope is that you need to be careful when buying basketball shoes. If you’re buying them because they look cool and you just want to look fresh when you hit the town, you’re better looking at a different type of sneaker. Alternatively, if you’re looking to wear them on the court, you need to be carefully of a number of things.

Not only do you need to make sure you buy a pair that fits your foot width properly, you want a shoe that gives you support and shock-absorption. Unless of course you don’t want to be the next Curry or James. Well…the chances that you’re going to be the next Curry or James is pretty slim, but if you want to play versatile b-ball, you need the shoes that will support your game style.

Although there may be other brands out there that we’ve not featured, and they might be good in their own unique way, we’re adamant that you need to stick to either Under Armor, Adidas or Nike these days. Reebok and all the others just don’t really cut it, even at amateur level.

So, we hope we’ve given you a good overview of what’s out there, but remember, if you think wearing a pair of sneakers is going to turn you into an NBA Hall of Famer, you’re sadly mistaken.

What’s that phrase we keep repeatedly using? Oh yes, that’s it. You’ve gotta have the skillz to pay the billz.

Having a decent pair of shoes, like one of the fine b-ball shoes we’ve listed above will certainly help you finetune your game, but it won’t make you a legend.

Shaving Cream Vs. Shaving Gel?

Well, remember when we mentioned the benefit of creams making your hair stand upright for an easy and irritation-free close cut? Foams that come in cans are usually packed with air which prevents hairs standing to attention as well as the creams and gels allow. This means you don’t get as close a shave, or if you do, you sacrifice some shredded skin for the result.

Can Shaving Creams Be Used With An Electric Razor?

We’ll be honest, the jury is still out on this one. While we are inclined to say not really and avoid the people who tell you otherwise, they do have some good counter arguments. Using an electric razor doesn’t afford the same close finish as a regular razor does. Naturally, this means there is a much lesser chance of irritation and due to safety guards on a lot of models, no chance of cuts.

If you’ve ever been mid-shave as your electric battery dies, you might disagree. These nicks can be a bit startling and leave you asking where the onion cutting ninjas are. Yet, the majority of the time electric shaving is painless and not a threat to your skin. As the purpose of shaving creams are to protect your skin, they are not really needed here and hence our calls to cross the road when you see the people that tell you otherwise.

However, some people have started to say you can, and they may have a point. There are now many electric shavers that have been designed for in-shower use and to be used with shaving products. We would speculate that these types of electric razors are aimed at men with extremely sensitive skin that need even more protection from even the safest of shaving methods. What any guy opting for an electric shaver should do however, is clean and lubricate their device frequently – just our two cents.

Does Shaving Cream Wash Off Easily?

Shaving cream is not a dangerous or difficult substance to remove after use. Once you’ve finished shaving with specs of cream everywhere, looking like a badly shaven Santa, just give your face a quick rinse, or wipe clean with a towel then splash yourself with water.

One tip straight from the Men’s Gear locker room is to check your nostrils for lingering cream. Forgetting to cleanse the edges and just inside your nostrils can dry them out and leave them irritated. If you can, but by no means necessary, you should shower after shaving to give your skin a deserving exfoliation before adding some moisturizer on your way out the door.

Getting shaving cream on your clothes is a different story. Scraping shaving cream off your suit is usually the result of forgetting to shave during your grooming routine. Sometimes this isn’t always successful, and you’ll need your clothes washing before being able to wear them again.

Actually, we’ve even heard that shaving cream can clean up your mess. It’s rumored that these gels and creams are effective at getting coffee spills and food stains out of the furniture, but don’t quote us on that one. Next, we’ll be telling you putting bread in your mouth while peeling an onion will stop your eyes watering (it will!).

Every guy is different and while we might think the same way a lot of the time and like a lot of the same gear, when it comes to grooming we all have our own directions. Discovering which shaving products do and don’t work for you can be a matter of trial and error, but boy when you discover the right one, you’ll be as smooth on your cheeks as you are in the bar.
