Some of the Best T-Shirts Are Made with This Fabric

What selvedge denim is to jeans, loopwheel knitting is to t-shirts and sweatshirts. Loopwheeling — a special tube-knitting method using cotton yarns — is an all-but-extinct manufacturing style associated with durable, high-quality fabrics. Nearly a century ago, large brands like Champion and L.L. Bean used it for their best stuff.

But unlike selvedge denim’s popularity, this heritage manufacturing process isn’t common in the apparel industry. Only a small handful of factories in the entire world are still producing loopwheeled fabrics, in places as far-flung as Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture and Germany’s Swabian Alps. According to some sources, no more than 200 working loopwheel machines even exist.

What’s more, the kind of machine that produces tube-knit loopwheeled fabric hasn’t changed much since it was patented in 1926, and no new machines were produced since the ‘50s when modern knitting machines began to dominate the industry. Each loopwheel machine is only capable of producing one diameter of tube knitting (read: one shirt size), which necessitates at least one additional machine for each additional size produced. These things also work very slowly, producing a few square meters of fabric per machine, per day; the raw material needed to make a single sweatshirt might take a couple of hours to knit. In order to make a full production run of one garment in multiple sizes and colors, even for a limited-run batch, a facility would need to run its dozens of machines for weeks or months on end — and they do, as evidenced by the offerings of a few small brands putting out modern loopwheeled garments.

So it’s no surprise that the industry transitioned away from this limiting production method, and adopted other ways to produce quality fabric quickly and cheaply. But small brands like Studio d’Artisan, Iron Heart and The Rite Stuff see an immense value in loopwheeled materials, and they’re willing to work with existing manufacturers to bring back a level of quality that’s hard to find anymore.

If you invest in a loopwheeled garment, it promises a softer feel and stronger construction than other knits made on modern machines; the fabric is woven with a high stitch count under as little tension as possible, resulting in a product that is arguably the best t-shirt material you can possibly get. And due to the density of the weave, it also tends to be more durable and less prone to fraying with extended use.

As you can imagine, these garments are anything but cheap; a lot of the cost incurred by the time-intensive production is passed onto buyers by necessity. You can expect to pay upwards of $70 for a t-shirt and as much as $300 for a sweatshirt. But with more brands bringing their own loopwheeled pieces into the market such as Drop Studios (the production arm of newly-rebranded Massdrop), it’s likely there will be more and more options with additional fits, colors, weights and price points available to people who want this quality and heritage for themselves.

In the meantime, a handful of brands are already doing great things with loopwheel knitting — these are some we recommend.

Save up to $162 on These Iconic Chelsea Boots

In 1932, Reginal Murray Williams founded his eponymous brand in Adelaide, South Australia, offering saddles, riding boots and other leather goods for cattlemen. The boots, in particular, were a hit. Made from a single-piece leather upper, they had a clean silhouette, a simple pull-on style and superior durability. And over the past eight decades, the design hasn’t changed much.

In recent years, however, the brand received investment from L capital — a private-equity fund sponsored by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) — along with IFM Investors and Hugh Jackman. The influx of resources and capital has allowed R.M. Williams to expand on a global scale, offering its iconic boots to a much wider audience. You can pick up a pair at East Dane, where the classic Chelsea boot style is now on sale.

Available in both full-grain leather and suede, it features elastic insets, branded pull-tabs and leather soles. The current sale offers 25 percent off — that’s savings up to $162.

The Best Places to Find Clothing Deals Online

Used clothes are getting a high-touch, high-tech rebranding. Not into “secondhand,” with its whiff of musty, crowded Salvation Army racks? Maybe “archive fashion” suits you better — especially given the number of apps and services cropping up to feed the growing fashion-resale space.

The first companies to champion the idea were women’s sites ThredUp and Vestiaire Collective, essentially peer-to-peer consignment shops, which both launched in 2009; DePop, Poshmark and TheRealReal followed in 2011. Menswear got its answer in 2013 with Grailed. The site was first to focus exclusively on men’s pieces, and offered a platform for buyers and sellers who were previously stuck haunting niche forums. Two years later, sneaker resale platforms StockX and Goat gave sneakerheads the chance to shop rare and hyped styles that were previously all but untouchable.

Of all the upstarts, Grailed has wielded the deftest touch, exploring the many possibilities in men’s resale. The strictly peer-to-peer marketplace (stores and brands not allowed) is shoppable via app and provides a distinct style POV, something noticeably lacking on other platforms.

“We never want to be a faceless and voiceless company,” says Lawrence Schlossman, brand manager for Grailed. “Everyone who works here, to some degree, is a fashion enthusiast.”

Grailed might have a definitive point of view, but it’s inclusive: buyers can find everything from rare designer pieces and streetwear to vintage clothing and traditional brands, plus expertly curated sales and collections from celebrities and fashion industry insiders.

Schlossman says that Grailed’s success, and that of the fashion resale industry at large, is due in part to “secondhand being rebranded as archive fashion” — the recalibration lifted a stigma and added a premium shine. Not to mention guys were suddenly able to see economic opportunity in their well-curated closets.

“Not only do a lot of these iconic pieces within the menswear canon, regardless of genre or designer, hold their value,” Schlossman says, “they appreciate in value as well.”

Here, five sites to know now.

StockX

A platform that allows sneakerheads to sell rare kicks, with valuation visibility to rival the stock market. StockX incorporates a social media element so buyers can showcase personal sneaker portfolios.

Who It’s For: Sneakerheads
Year Founded: 2015

Grailed

A peer-to-peer marketplace specializing in rare designer pieces, streetwear and vintage clothing. It curates sought-after garments that make it easy to discover hits from the past, and there’s designer education via the site’s blog.

Who It’s For: Menswear aficionados
Year Founded: 2013

Poshmark

The online equivalent of a flea market, with a staggering range of vintage, designer and run-of-the-mill apparel. Take advantage of the option to make an offer on any item.

Who It’s For: Deal hunters
Year Founded: 2011

TheRealReal

Unlike many peer-to-peer services, TheRealReal has inventory; it authenticates each item and prices accordingly. It’s more expensive than other platforms, but the upcharge is for peace of mind — it eliminates much of the guesswork out of secondhand shopping for you.

Who It’s For: Designer enthusiasts

Etsy

A favorite platform for makers, it’s also a go-to for vintage dealers specializing in everything from vintage Levi’s to rare Chimayo jackets to Fred Harvey-era jewelry.

Top 18 Denim Jean Jackets for Men in 2019

There’s nothing like denim for creating that forever cool James Dean look.  And when you look good you feel good. It’s an iconic fashion statement that has transcended the decades to stay a firm wardrobe favorite over generations.

A good denim jacket is a second skin, as much a part of who you are as your hair or eye color. It’s your go-to jacket, for anywhere, anytime. Women have purses, men have denim jackets. A good quality denim jacket is a jacket for all seasons. Even though they are light they withstand all weathers, don’t need constant washes and are tough enough to stand whatever gets thrown at them.

They are highly adaptable, with linings and trims that radiate the personalities of their wearer. Each one wears to become as individual as its owner.  They are ubiquitous, as much part of the USA culture as the cowboy, the hamburger and Lady Liberty herself.

LifeHe denim jacket is something you can wear to walk in style. It looks cool with light blue patches, but it performs equally well when it comes to comfort.  Those blue embroidered patches at the shoulder look especially stylish.

The use of super soft cotton means you will not feel it while wearing it. It is lightweight but you will still find it to be quite sturdy and durable. That may be because it actually uses a combination of polyester and cotton.

The only issue you may face is regarding its size. Don’t forget to refer to the size chart, but many customers have confirmed that the chart is a little off. You may be better off ordering size larger to get a right fit.  If you can manage to find a correct size, you will love your purchase.

To make it look even more stylish, the company has used accent seaming along with fold-over collar. Together these minor details work great to make a good-looking jean jacket.

BUYING GUIDE & FAQ’S

What are the main things to consider when buying a denim jacket?

With so many styles and types of jean jackets currently available in the market, it makes sense to know the main things to consider when setting out to buy yourself a new denim jacket you will probably be wearing for years to come.

Raw Denim or Washed Denim?

It’s an important question to answer, as it is going to have a direct impact on your purchase.

Raw denim is dyed but not washed during the processing stage. Washed denim is dyed then washed. The quality is the same but raw denim fades faster. Having already been washed through once by the manufacturer, washed denim has already started to fade before it even hits the shelves. It will fade slower than the raw over time which will only start to fade when you bother to wash it sometime long after it’s sold. It’s not a problem as such, it just depends on how you want your denim to look.

Should You Be Going for Selvedge Denim?

Selvedge denim is a special type of denim.  It is made on a loom using a single cross-yard which is passed through the vertical warp beams. In simple terms, it is a woven or knit denim that comes out strong to reduce the risks of tears or messed up fabric increasing the wear life of the denim until almost forever.

Being a high-quality denim and strong,  it offers more support than traditional denim making it especially fit for jackets and other outwear. It can handle a bit of rough and tumble.

Of course, because of its sturdiness and the long procedure to produce it, the cost of selvedge denim is on the higher side. It takes a lot of time and effort to produce it, but for a long term, especially if you wear denims regularly, it is the worth the money you will be investing.

Other Important Factors to Consider

It is important to decide whether you want raw denim, need washed denim, or require selvedge denim, but there are other factors that can affect your decision. For instance:

Find the Right Fit

Get a jean jacket that fits well on you. Too tight or too loose jacket will not make you look cool. Since it is a one-time investment for a long duration, take time to choose. If there are minor fitting issues, you can always get the piece altered. But you certainly don’t want to buy something you will never wear.

Your jean jacket should fit you like a t-shirt. It shouldn’t look over-sized or sag. Any folds are a big no no.  The jacket should look crisp and neat. The front and back falling straight.

You can go for any length though. That depends on your style. If you want to pair your jacket with tight fit straight pants, choose a slightly longer one. But beware,  too long will look shabby and a too short make you look like a kid. Most denim jackets should fit you at your waistline. It’s the classic fit.

Choose the Right Color

When we think of denim, blue is the color that comes to mind. Well, there are shades in blue too, but the trend for blue came from denim in jeans. Most people go with light blue as it is the most casual option and fits with any top that you wear. Light blue always looks trendy on the cropped or altered jean jackets made for the ladies.

For men, it’s the darker indigo blue that looks classy. There are other colors and they are the in-thing now. Everyone wants to stand out a little more and denim can do that. However, these colored denims are fashionable but a little less flexible than the traditional blue.

Zipper vs Buttons

There is no good or bad in any of these. Zippers are as good as buttons in the way they work and it’s down to your own personal preference which to choose. But keep in mind that during winter, the chilly winds can in between the buttons, so you might want a jacket with a zipper that closes up tight.

The Number of Pockets

This might sound like a trivial point but if you think of it, having at least one pocket for your keys is useful. Some jackets have none. Some have pockets on each side of the chest. Some pockets are at the bottom so you can put your hands in. Even if you don’t keep anything in them, pockets can look cool. It comes down to fashion choices again, so it’s all up to you.

What clothes do denim jean jackets go with?

The best thing about denims is they fit just about everywhere. Any occasion, whether it’s another day at the office or a casual party, you put on those trendy denims and you are ready to go. This is the reason why everyone wants to hunt for the perfect jacket for themselves. There is no one style or size that can fit all. Each person has their taste and unique size. Some guys they suit, and others well, they just don’t. Nevertheless, it makes sense to learn a few of those “style” roles to wear your jean jacket like a boss.

Denim jacket matching

If you think wearing blue jeans and a matching denim jacket is the cool thing, you might just be more than a little off trend. To look good and different, you can make contrasts work between jacket and pants. Denim from top to bottom is so 1970s. Let’s not bring it back.

To stay a la mode, choose cords, chinos, khakis or any casual leggings that look good with a denim jacket. It’s about the color contrast. But if you are crazy about denims and absolutely must wear denims all over, at least spare us all and have different colors for the top and bottom. Try gray with blue or indigo, or black with grey, but definitely not light-blue with dark blue! It’s the fashion faux pas of the 21st century. The best thing to do is to get yourself some decent pants so you are never even tempted to wear denim and denim.

Winter Layering

For the colder months, and if you are not superhuman, a simple jacket without any layering will do no good. You’ll need a jacket with an inner layer of some sort. A hoodie jacket will be an ideal option for winter, especially when temperatures hit single digits. For a trendy and chic layered look, wear the denim jacket under another oversized jacket.

Black Denim Jacket for Men

Black is the color of class and elegance. Black just suits every man. Literally. There is no chance of a confusion or clash with patterns or colors. A black jean jacket, paired with black jeans can look awesome for a casual look. Having a jacket with a hoodie is like the icing on the cake and can give you a great style that’s perfect on an autumn day.

White Denim Jacket

White is too bright and generally not a very good choice for men. Freddie Mercury excepted. But a white jean jacket as part of a light summer wardrobe is more than acceptable for a bright sunny day. Pairing a white lightweight jacket with a bright colored t-shirt and chinos can make you fashionable and cool in more than one way, during the summer. The problem with white, is that it’s white – it’s just so easily stained, so be extra careful and mind what you get up to!

Oversized Denim Jacket

An oversized jacket looks just awesome on men. It gives a manly and strong look to a man and creates a casual and sort of a vintage style, which can go with almost everything. To relive the 80s style, pair a denim jacket.

Jacket for casual events

For the cold evenings, when you don’t feel like wearing the blazer, get your black or indigo denim jacket and put them on. Wear the one that fits you well, without any folds or adjustments. Pair this with a t-shirt, or a casual shirt depending on where you are going, and wear slim-fit trouser or smart trainer to complete the handsome look.

What are the main brands? Which brands from the below list are up and coming?

As mentioned already, you can find different types of jean jackets, so it is important to know your preferences before making a purchase. You should also know about the main brands to be able to select the right jacket. For instance, if you’re mainly interested in a motorcycle denim jacket, you may want to check the range offered by Levi’s or GAP, but if you’re looking for a rather sophisticated jacket with some inner lining, you may want to check what brands like H & M, Edwin, and Carhartt have to offer.

What’s more, you can also consider trying some other popular brands, such as A.P.C, ASOS, ACNE Studios, Nudie Jeans, River Island, and OrSlow. Remember that all these brands have some nice jean jackets available, but it all comes down to your personal preference.

Conclusion.

The fact of the matter is that you just cannot go wrong when you decide to buy a denim jacket, as it always serves as an essential piece in a man’s wardrobe. It lasts long and stays in fashion no matter when you wear it. Just be sure to determine how you’re going to wear it and how are you going to layer up when wearing the jean jacket. Finding the right fit may be a bit tricky, but once you have overcome this obstacle, you get a style go-to for life.

The Impressively Strong Case for Old-School Socks

Nathan Levy spent his three-decade career globe-trotting, helping one company after another make socks more efficiently. With various roles, he explored every part of the business from the cotton refining process to final marketing strategies and sales. When a consulting role ended in 2017 (he’d just spent a couple of years helping Stance get off the ground) he decided he wanted to revive an old method of sock manufacturing. So Levy founded Dueple, a company he could run on his own terms.

In the mid-1980s when Levy entered the industry, almost all commercial socks were made with either single-cylinder or double-cylinder machinery, but the double-cylinder equipment was preferred by brands. These machines allowed for double-knit socks, terry-loop backing, formed heel pockets and durable, comfortable constructions.

But over the next decade, Levy pushed his companies to move away from double-cylinder knitting and adopt single-cylinder methods. Making socks with these machines was fast and cheap, and great for a company’s bottom line. Though the quality fell short of double-cylinder construction — many single-cylinder socks even lacked shaped heels and toe pockets — customers continued to buy socks after the market shifted to single-cylinder manufacturing, and sock makers recorded higher profits than ever.

Through the early aughts, single-cylinder knitting greatly improved. The machines could produce a fine product, but Levy started to question whether these socks were a worthy replacement for the double-cylinder knits that had come before. “A professional who knows can tell you,” he said, “once you have worn double-cylinder, you cannot wear something else — you understand they’re different.”

In 2017, while Levy was visiting his daughter in Berlin, he noticed countless bicycle riders in high-cuffed pants and exposed socks. The visual display made a lasting impact, and Levi decided to start his own sock company exclusively using double-cylinder machines. So he founded Dueple with the promise of old-school, quality socks — the kind he once pushed brands away from — available in 31 rich colors.

Dueple has been selling its socks online since the tail end of 2018 and is looking ahead to bigger things, including potential store openings and a retail presence in the US. But for now, if you want to experience some of the best socks available for yourself, the price of entry is just $14.

Top 12 Winter Gloves for Men in 2019

When it’s cold outside the last thing you probably feel like doing is moving from your place beside the fire, but sometimes there’s no choice. However, we’re here to save you from the peril of freezing cold hands and numb thumbs. We said thumbs…these are gloves we’re talking about, not pants.

If you’ve always made do with a cheap pair from the dollar-store you won’t have had the opportunity to appreciate the difference a decent pair of gloves can make. A high-quality glove won’t end up wet and soggy within a matter of seconds and will keep your fingers feeling toasty even when you’re surrounded by snow.

There are lots of reasons to brave icy temperatures, such as working in construction or in freezers and other cold conditions. Cold weather can be fun too though – the joy of flinging a snowball at an unsuspecting friend is hard to beat! Whether you’re preparing for cold weather to arrive in your state or you’re jetting off on a skiing vacation in the Rockies, a pair of good gloves is an essential every man should have.

If gloves aren’t something you’ve ever considered, you might find the market a bit of a minefield with all kinds of designs and features clamoring for attention. Never fear, as always Mens Gear is here to help you narrow down the field. We’ve put together a list of the top 12 winter gloves plus a few helpful pointers on gloves in general too.

We’re kicking off the list with a magnificent pair of gloves from Carhartt which have an impressive array of features. Starting with the outside you’ll find a tough polyurethane exterior which is coupled with a waterproof lining and a soft, 100% polyester lining. This lining includes special FastDry technology which has been designed to wick away sweat. There’s not much worse than a pair of sweaty hands stuck inside of a pair of heavy gloves so this is a feature which we’re giving the thumbs up.

These gloves are fairly warm but they’re pretty bulky too. This means although they’re fine for hiking, they don’t make fine handling movements particularly easy. The fleece cuff provides a comfortable fit, preventing unwanted breezes while a loop cuff clip ensures the gloves are snug.

There’s one extra feature we haven’t mentioned until now – the nose-wipe. Yes, you heard that right. We’ve all been there though… hands all gloved up, runny nose, what’s a guy to do? Trying to prevent a long line of snot covering your face isn’t easy. Enter the nose-wipe. This is a strip of material on the thumb that acts just like a tissue and will step in on those awkward occasions. The jury’s still out on whether we think this is a genius or revolting invention but we can’t deny that it’s clever.

If you’re wrestling with the dilemma of being able to use your iPhone and the desire to keep your hands warm, worry no more! Timberland has the solution with these nifty knit gloves that come with touchscreen technology. While the gloves look just like a regular pair of knit gloves, if you peer more closely at the fingertips you’ll see some clever patches. These allow accurate operation of your iPhone without exposing the rest of your hand to freezing temperatures.

Aside from the touchscreen fingertips, the rest of the glove is stylish – as you might expect from a prestigious brand such as Timberland. Made from a charcoal knit, it’s warm and snug with a textured palm which provides excellent grip. The only slight gripe is that there’s no way to adjust the size of the cuff and without any ribbing, it doesn’t always fit close to your wrist. However, the finger and palm fit beautifully and it’s a small grumble about what is otherwise a cleverly-designed set of gloves.

Well, it turns out that it’s not just Timberland who offer touchscreen technology as here come Wells Lamont offering exactly the same feature! However, these gloves are very different from the Timberland style and are designed to provide far more warmth in colder weather while still offering the touchscreen function. It’s just the thumb and the first finger which provide this facility but let’s face it, that’s all you’re going to need whether you’re WhatsApping the guys or scrolling through Twitter.

These gloves are ideal for keeping your hands warm while you’re working, and are suitable for a range of activities. DIY projects, landscaping, construction and using power tools are all possible with these winter gloves, and they’re perfect for wear in cold working environments too. With a Spandex back for stretch and a synthetic leather palm, these gloves have an 80g Thinsulate fleece lining so you’re almost guaranteed to stay warm.

As these gloves are intended for active use, the fit is snug and you won’t find oodles of fabric slopping around. This not only helps the touchscreen function but also makes it easy to use your hands as normal. A strap around the wrist allows you to adjust the cuff size as well as securing the gloves firmly in position. They’re only available in Large to XXL so if you’re a dude with small hands you’re out of luck.

This helps them to mold to the shape of your hand snugly, delivering a flawless fit.

Mountain Made specialize in designing sportswear which combines warmth and performance and with this pair of multi-purpose outdoor gloves, we think they’ve hit the mark. Warm and snug on our hands, they’ve also got a touch of Spandex and a dab of PVC rubber to provide stretch and grip. You’ll particularly notice this on the palms which provide great dexterity without diminishing sensation, with a multi-directional stretch. This allows you to wear these gloves while enjoying a range of activities including cycling, riding, driving and shooting, as well as also being suitable for general everyday use.

These are another pair of gloves which offer touchscreen technology – we’re beginning to think it’s everywhere now! – but they’re also lightweight and easy to wear. Heat-preserving technology helps to keep your hands warm while an anti-bacterial treatment ensures they never get stinky. If you decide to give them a swift wash the absorbent lining is quick-drying which also helps to keep odors away.

The unusual vertically-placed zip on the top of the gloves is one of the most striking features but it’s not just there to look good. Although it makes the gloves look smart yet sporty, the strong zipper helps to hold your gloves firmly in position and ensures a snug fit. Mountain Made provide a variety of dimensions for each size including finger length and palm circumference so you can check before ordering, which is handy. However, it’s worth knowing that the gloves tend to come up very snug so if in doubt, you might want to size up.

Carhartt are back again with another pair of gloves which will keep the cold out. With a polyester shell, these gauntlet-style gloves protect the hand and the wrist from the worst of the weather. Well-insulated and padded, the gloves are thick and insulated to provide a soft and comfortable fit while keeping hands and fingers warm when the temperatures plunge.

These gloves are intended to be multi-purpose so whether you’re shoveling snow, hiking in chilly temperatures or working in cold conditions, your hands will stay snug. Unlike some other designs, your hands won’t overheat thanks to the Fast Dry technology on the lining which wicks away any moisture and sweat. The exterior of the gloves is made from a combination of wear-resistant goatskin leather and polyester, providing durability and excellent grip. The controversial nose-wipe feature also makes a return – love it or hate it, you can’t deny it’s useful!

The wrists on these gloves are wide so they’re simple to slip on, no matter what you’re wearing. You won’t have to put up with any gaping though as they also feature a barrel-lock cinching closure. This enables you to pull the wrist as tightly closed as you like, keeping out any chilly air. Some reviewers said that the insulation at the tips of the fingers could be better but even so, it took a considerable length of time for any cold to start to creep in. With these gloves, there’s no excuse not to get out on the drive and start clearing away the snow!

If ever there were a pair of gloves to make you look twice, this design from Metog fits the bill. Are they fingerless? Or perhaps they’re mittens? They can’t seem to make up their mind. That’s OK by us as we think it’s pretty handy – excuse the pun! – to have a pair of gloves that ticks both boxes. Whether you’re planning on wiping out the opposition in a no-holds-barred snowball fight or just working in the yard, you can pick the style of glove you prefer.

Let’s start with the fingerless design. We love fingerless gloves as they keep our hands warm without taking away any of the manual dexterity. If you’ve ever tried a spot of DIY wearing big gloves, you’ll know exactly what we mean – trying to hold a nail wearing big gauntlets is a task we dare anyone to try! With fingerless gloves you can do all the fiddly work you need and of course, there’s no problem fitting in a bit of downtime with your phone either. No pesky glove fingers getting in the way!

Sadly, as much as we love our fingerless gloves, quite often they’re just not warm enough. While we love the convenience we’re also quite keen on avoiding frostbite in our fingertips too. When the temperatures plunge, or when you start to lose feeling in your fingers, it’s time to wrap those babies up by flapping over the mitten attachment. Your fingers will instantly bask in the warmth that only a mitten can bring. Have you ever tried doing up buttons with cold fingers? Our friends at Metog understand so they’ve opted for a Velcro attachment instead. Phew.

Aside from the funky fingerless/mitten carousel, there are some other great features on these gloves too. Inside you’ll discover a cozy Thinsulate lining that feels soft to the touch and adds real warmth. The design of the gloves is striking as a deer-leather palm complements the wool tweed. This isn’t just for good looks however as the leather is breathable and wear-resistant and offers great adhesion, providing an excellent grip. An elastic cuff completes the design, keeping out gusts of air and nasty cold breezes. Brrrrr!

Pros

  • checkPalm leather offers great grip

Cons

  • cross-altWool exterior can leave gaps
  • cross-altSizing can be variable

If you love gadgets but you don’t like having cold hands, North Face have a solution that’s been tailor-made for you – their Etip Gloves. Designed as a winter glove the Etip is surprisingly sleek, not bulky like some of the others on our list. When you discover that it’s been designed with the use of smart-phones and other tech in mind, it all becomes clear. The slimline style allows you to retain full manual dexterity while still providing protection from the worst of the weather.

You’ll notice instantly that the gloves have an area of raised silicon bumps around the thumb and forefinger area. The reason for this is twofold – it helps you to grip your phone without dropping it, and also makes it easier to use your device accurately. Here at Mens Gear we know only too well the pain of fumbling with your phone in big gloves so we send our heartfelt thanks to the inventors over at North Face! Of course, these grippy areas also help you to hold onto ski-poles or ice-axes too.

However, there’s more to these gloves than just a few rubber bumps. A four-way stretch ensures that you’ll get a snug fit that’s comfortable too, also helped by what North Face call Radiametric Articulation™. We hadn’t heard of it either – it just means that your hands are held in a relaxed, natural position. Inside the gloves special Heatseeker™ insulation will keep those fingers toasty while on the outside a soft shell keeps out the wind and rain. Although not as chunky as some other gloves, the Etip are very warm but if you’re heading off to somewhere that’s really cold, they’re also suitable for layering up with a bulkier glove on top.

Our favorite non-knights in shining armor are back again with another pair of freaking awesome gloves. Part of their ColdGear range, these gloves are designed to be worn when the weather is really cold – in contrast to their AllSeason Gear for weather that’s in between. Beautifully slimline, you won’t feel like you’re holding a haystack at the end of each arm but you’ll still stay nice and cozy. This is thanks to the thermo-conductive coating on the fleece lining that retains all the heat you need.

On the outside there are some nifty touches too such as the AirVent panel which sits over the knuckles, increasing the stretch and ventilation as well as making the gloves more durable. The suede panel on the palm adds extra grip while the extended cuff provides greater protection. The gadget-lovers are well looked-after again here as there’s Tech Touch print on the fingers and thumb which allow phones and tablets to be used without exposing your digits to the cold. That’s what we call a true digital design! Groan…

Just one glance and you’ll start to feel your fingers flexing with excitement at the chance to slide into such a cozy-looking glove! We’ll be honest, these aren’t the biggest, warmest or most extensive gloves you’ll ever find but when the weather is cold but not sub-zero, these are perfect.

Despite the soft style, the exterior of these gloves repels water even if they aren’t completely waterproof. However, the wind will be kept out very well and your hands will feel well-protected. BUYING GUIDE & FAQ’S

What are the main things to consider when buying winter gloves?

Buying winter gloves means balancing up several factors including the way the gloves feel, their appearance and the various qualities that you need.  Winter gloves need to protect your hands while still feeling comfortable – but exactly what things should you be considering?

Dexterity

If you’re planning on hurtling down a ski slope you probably don’t need to worry too much about whether your gloves are too bulky for fine motor tasks. However, if you need gloves to keep your hands warm while you work outside, dexterity and the ability to carry out fine motor activities will be a big consideration. Some gloves which are very warm are bulky too, so choose a design that offers the dexterity you need for your planned use.

Insulation

Winter gloves are made from many different materials and have differing degrees of insulation and linings. Mittens will tend to be warmer than gloves naturally, the type of insulation used in the glove can also be very significant. Polyester gloves coupled with a fleece lining tend to be among the most practical and warm gloves around.

Size

We’re not talking about the size of the fingers here, but how far the gloves extend down your arm. In general, winter gloves tend to be longer because simply stopping abruptly at the wrist would expose bare skin – that’s making us cold just thinking about it! If you’re going to be in extremely cold conditions or carrying out an activity which involves lots of moving around, consider getting gauntlet-style gloves. These extend down the arm and make sure that no bare skin is left exposed to the elements.

What’s the difference between winter gloves and regular gloves?

If you’ve already got a pair of gloves in your closet, you might be wondering whether there’s any point in purchasing an extra pair just for winter. Surely one pair of gloves is as good as another, right? Wrong. Winter gloves do more than just cover your hands – as you can see from the question above, there’s a long list of features that they might include.

In their most basic form, gloves simply cover the hand and it’s entirely possible that you might need gloves during the summer too. Whether it’s for added grip, to protect your skin from the sun or keep out a light breeze, it’s not just during the winter months that you might want to whip out your handwear. As you might expect though, the type of gloves that you might wear in the summer would be very different from a pair of winter gloves.

Regular gloves may just offer minimal protection but winter gloves go above and beyond. They insulate against the cold, offer warmth and are usually padded to provide an extra degree of protection. On the outside, winter gloves have to be waterproof as well as being resistant to the wind too. There’s no point wearing a pair of gloves in the snow, only for them to be dripping wet within a matter of minutes!

What are the main materials used in winter gloves?

Although it might sound easy, this is an almost impossible question to answer due to the vast array of gloves on the market today. Cast your eyes over our list below and you’ll soon see that there’s a wide variety of materials used in the manufacture of winter gloves. All of the materials have different qualities, and different price-points too. The gloves you choose will depend on your budget, as well as the intended use for your gloves.

Some of the most common materials used include:

  • Extremely durable and long-lasting, leather is a premium material that’s tough and strong.
  • Wool blend. Wool or knit gloves provide a lightweight and soft glove that’s easy to wear and economical too. A classic material, they’re often used with other materials to provide better insulation and waterproofing.
  • Deerskin leather. A very specific type of leather often used for gloves, deerskin leather is soft to the touch as well as being excellent at keeping the cold out. Deerskin is very comfortable and often used to accent other materials within a glove.
  • Polar fleece. A great alternative to leather, fleece is snug and warm and will give cold hands a real treat. Often used as a lining for gloves, when used on its own the gloves tend to be lighter in weight but surprisingly warm.
  • A type of material which isn’t just breathable and resists moisture, it’s also warm, comfortable and machine-washable too. It’s designed to trap air more effectively than other materials, boosting its warmth and insulation. Often paired with a polyester or synthetic exterior, Thinsulate is a material to look out for.
  • Although it’s not a natural fiber, polyester is an excellent choice for winter gloves because of its ability to repel water and keep wind out. Lightweight and economical, polyester exteriors are often paired with cozy linings to create gloves which are as comfortable as they are practical.

How to wash and dry winter gloves

If you want to make sure your winter gloves stay in prime condition, you’ll need to take good care of them. This means giving them a wash and dry from time to time. This isn’t as easy as it sounds as winter gloves are made from a variety of different materials so you’ll need to check the instructions closely to make sure they stay looking as good as new.

Although you should always go with what the instructions tell you, we can give you a few hints on the best ways to wash some of the most common materials:

  • Saddle-soap or other oil-based soaps can be used to clean the exterior of leather gloves. Use a microfiber cloth to polish them up once they’re dry and you’ll be impressed at how good they look.
  • Hand-wash the gloves gently in cool or warm water – you can use a small amount of dish soap. Don’t be tempted to wring out your gloves or stretch them as you’ll very easily pull them out of shape. Place the gloves flat and leave them to dry.
  • Cotton blends. Use a washing machine on the cool cycle – do not tumble-dry.
  • Waterproof polyester gloves. Use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on the exterior – spray liberally all over. On the inside, baking soda can help to eliminate any unwanted odors.
  • Suede or specialist materials. Either rub with a damp cloth or if permitted, take to a dry cleaner.

Now you’re up to speed in what to look for in your perfect winter gloves, we think it’s time we introduced you to a few pairs. Without further delay, here’s the Mens Gear list of what we think are the top 12 winter gloves for men in 2018.

Time to fall in glove!

Well, that’s about it – our list of 12 top winter gloves has come and gone and it’s time for you to choose the glove you want to love. Whether you just want to stay warm while you’re at work and for when the time comes for shoveling snow, or whether you have a winter vacation planned, these gloves will do the trick. We think there are a great range of styles and options so whatever you want, there’s a glove to suit your budget and needs.

From long gauntlet gloves to snug fleece designs, we’re big fans of all these winter glove styles. If only there was a glove that could actually shovel the snow too without us having to lift a finger, our life would be complete…

A History of Breitling Pilot’s Watches

Step foot on the tarmac at Edwards or the flight deck of the USS Ronald Reagan and you’re likely to see a few Breitling watches on the pilots’ wrists. A Breitling on the wrist is as much a part of standard aviator kit as the ubiquitous and eponymous aviator shades. The “terrific wristwatches” with their “two thousand calibrations on them and dials for recording everything” that author Tom Wolfe refers to in The Right Stuff, his chronicle of the early days of the jet age, was probably a Breitling.

But Breitling’s connection with pilot’s watches is more than a historical footnote or a well-branded, retro-inspired line of heritage watches. The brand has won pilots’ favor over the decades due to the functionality and rugged build of the watches themselves, which have evolved over time as much as the planes the pilots are flying.

Breitling began to supply “onboard chronographs” for aircraft in the late 1930s. The Royal Air Force was a customer, tapping Breitling to produce analog cockpit clocks for RAF icons like the Spitfire fighter and Lancaster bomber. During the aviation boom following WWII, Breitling continued to produce onboard chronographs for manufacturers including Boeing, Lockheed and Douglas. Breitling-Wakmann instrument panel-chronographs (produced in partnership with New York watch/clock importer and distributor Wakmann) became as familiar to pilots as Breitling’s wristwatches. Not surprisingly, the two also produced Wakmann-Breitling wristwatches from the 1950s through the 1970s.

By this point Breitling had cemented itself as a pilot watch standard for fliers themselves. But the evolution of their watches can’t be properly considered without first referencing the renowned “Chronomat”.

history-of-breitling-pilots-watches-gear-patrol-lead-ambiance-1-v3

Combining Breitling’s pioneering chronograph developments (independent push pieces for start/stop and reset functions) with a “circular” slide rule, the Chronomat wasn’t designed for aviation applications. In fact, it wasn’t even the first slide-rule wristwatch, strictly speaking. Fellow Swiss maker Mimo-Loga is said to have patented its example in the summer of 1940, just a few weeks before Breitling applied for its own patent.

But the utility of the Chronomat — developed for timing and financial calculations with scientists, engineers and mathematicians in mind — was quickly recognized by military men, including pilots, after it went on sale in 1942. Its two-scale slide-rule functionality allowed flyers to calculate time, speed, distance and even fuel consumption.

By 1952 Venus 175/178/184-powered Chronomats were firmly established favorites with aviators. Acknowledging the Chronomat’s popularity, Breitling designed a new slide-rule chronograph specifically for pilots and dubbed it the “Navitimer” — a contraction of “navigation” and “timer”.

Most researchers concur that the Navitimer, released between 1952 and 1954, was developed with the aid of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) specifically for their members. The earliest models, powered by both Venus and Valjoux manual movements, feature AOPA’s winged-logo prominently atop their black dials. The Navitimer’s three logarithmic scales, including one taken from the “E6B” pilot’s circular slide rule, conferred even greater functionality. As such, the Navitimer is referred to as the first flight computer watch and is rightly considered the most iconic pilot’s watch.

Later versions included the “Cosmonaute”, a Navitimer with 24-hour graduation first worn in orbit in 1962 by American astronaut Scott Carpenter; the Navitimer Chronomatic, which was one of the first automatic chronographs; and models supplied to various air forces. Navitimers were even supplied to the Iraqi Air Force in the 1970s and 1980s with IAF wings engraved on the caseback. The Navitimer remains in production today, available in eight versions powered by Breitling’s in-house B01 chronograph movement.

When pilot, engineer and microelectronics specialist Ernst Schneider purchased Breitling in 1979, he recognized that the nearly 100-year-old brand needed to embrace new technology while respecting its heritage. One of the first fruits of Schneider’s future-focused tenure was a completely new Chronomat, designed this time as a dedicated pilot’s watch. Powered by the Valjoux 7750, the chronograph debuted in 1984 in conjunction with the manufacture’s centennial anniversary.

New features abounded, developed with input from the Italian Air Force aerobatic display team, the Frecce Tricolori. The Chronomat’s steel case now featured a larger crown and pushers, and a rotating timing bezel with four “rider tabs” — an innovation Schneider devised in 1982 to allow easier turning of the bezel while wearing flight gloves. Gone was the type 42 slide rule, replaced by a 0-100 decimal-minutes scale useful for a range of computations, and a tachymetre scale for timing involving speed and distance.

history-of-breitling-pilots-watches-gear-patrol-lead-ambiance-3-

The new Chronomat also displayed Breitling’s now ubiquitous “winged-B” logo, derived from the AOPA wings. A special version with the Frecce Tricolori logo on the dial was issued to members of the Italian aerobatic team, beginning a tradition that continues today with the Chronomat 44 GMT limited edition, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Patrouille Suisse, the Swiss Air Force jet display team.

Just a year after the release of the new Chronomat, Breitling debuted the “Aerospace”. Originally referred to as the “Navitimer Aerospace”, the new model, with its distinctive analog-digital dial, represented Breitling’s first strictly quartz-powered pilot’s watch. Initially available with a titanium case and a multi-function seven-jewel quartz movement based on the ETA 988 calibre, the Aerospace has been continuously updated over its three-decade history. In 2002, it became one of the first Breitling timepieces to incorporate the brand’s sophisticated SuperQuartz movement, which is thermocompensated for resistance to temperature extremes and chronometer certified.

In 1995, Breitling introduced a ground-breaking quartz-powered pilot’s watch that quickly gained popularity — the “Emergency”. In addition to the functionality conferred by its quartz movement, the Emergency was the first watch to contain a built-in emergency micro-transmitter operating on the 121.5MHz air distress frequency. In the event of an accident or emergency, the watch could be triggered to broadcast a distress signal on 121.5 MHz, enabling search and rescue personnel to locate the wearer via the analog signal. Breitling’s “survival instrument” worked, saving lives in several documented cases where it successfully guided rescuers to victims. However, if the wearer’s approximate position was not already known when Emergency’s transmitter was engaged, locating them precisely via the 121.5 MHz analog band could be a tricky proposition.

In 2013, Breitling introduced a new version of the Emergency — the “wrist-type dual frequency distress beacon”. The new Emergency added the capability to broadcast a distress signal on the 406MHz band, a digital frequency that’s part of the COSPAS-SARSAT international satellite alert system, monitored by low-earth orbit and geostationary satellites. Once the Emergency’s wire antennas are deployed from its titanium case, the satellites can fix the wearer’s position precisely.

Since Georges Kern’s takeover at CEO of Breitling in 2018, the former Richemont executive has reorganized the company’s catalog and introduced several new products and lines, including the Navitimer 8 collection in 2018 and the vintage throwback Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 Re-Edition and Navitimer 1 Automatic 41 in 2019. “Nothing here is new,” Kern remarked at Baselworld in 2018. “We’ve just repackaged everything, hopefully with taste.” We’ve continued to see tasteful modernizations of vintage classics and special editions, and by the looks of it, this trend will continue under Kern’s leadership.

So yes: it turns out Breitling is just a maker of watches, as you might have presumed. And yes: almost every watch company now has some sort of pilot’s watch in its lineup. But legitimacy and credibility with the badasses who break the speed of sound or ride a rocket into space? The competition seems to be missing out on that, in spades. Meanwhile, Breitling hasn’t been resting on its well-tended, very cushy laurels — they continue to build practical watches for the modern pilot today.

Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next%

Yup, still with the percentage sign on the name. It’s really called the ZoomX Vaporfly Next%, but that’s where the blemishes stop. When you get over that odd moniker, there’s just so much to admire in Nike’s new trainers.

To make this marathon-ready pair, Nike sought feedback from its cache of world champion runners. And thus comes the new ZoomX Vaporfly Next%, an evolution from the brand’s Vaporfly 4%. Featuring Vaporweave, a new material construction that’s lighter than flyknit, these shoes are a lot more breathable and absorb less water from sweat or rain.

The ZoomX Vaporfly Next% marathon shoes also feature offset laces to reduce pressure on sensitive areas of the foot. Nike added extra Zoomx foam in the midsole, plus custom traction patterns for increased grip in wet weather. Nike listened well — traction improvements came from data by Eliud Kipchoge, Mo Farah, and Geoffrey Kirui.

Even with all these new upgrades, the pair weighs exactly the same as its predecessor. This should perhaps come as no surprise, as Nike always excels when it comes to streamlining design to cut bulk and fat.

“This shoe is truly the result of our athletes, sport scientists, engineers and designers closely collaborating throughout the entire process of design, testing and manufacturing,” says Nike.

The company is set to debut these kicks during the forthcoming London Marathon. It has also prepared a special release for those who really want a pair. Nike will offer limited quantities of the ZoomX Vaporfly Next% via the Nike Run Club App. They’ll cost $275 once released, which surely isn’t cheap even by Nike’s standards. But all evolution comes with a price. You can hit the link below for more information.

How to Treat Your Closet Like a Collection

“If you’re investing in your wardrobe, whether or not we’re talking about custom suits or even sports equipment and gear, you have to take care of it if you want it to last,” says Julie Ann Clauss (née Orsini), who’s stored some of the world’s most beautiful clothes as an archivist for Tom Ford. “That includes being diligent about cleaning and storing the right way.”

Clauss has advised clients such as Calvin Klein, Jason Wu and Marc Jacobs, among others, and now runs The Wardrobe, a private archival consultancy that offers museum-quality conservation and restoration. Here, she recommends a few simple steps to assure your sartorial investments (big or small) are well protected.

Edit

Before investing in new garments — or launching a full-scale reorganization — consider selling or donating items you haven’t put on in a while. “If you haven’t worn it in a year, you’re not wearing it again,” Clauss says. Exceptions to this rule: custom tuxedos or other timeless special-occasion garments.

Optimize

Organize your closet in a logical, functional manner. “I like to keep things of like types together,” Clauss says. Consider grouping shirts from short sleeves to long sleeves, and color coordinating everything from light to dark. If you only have one closet, adjust your storage for ease of use. “The things that you wear most often should be front and center,” Clauss says.

Clean

Keeping your clothes clean is the most important thing you can do for their longevity — and that means really clean. Even items that aren’t visibly dirty can attract moths. “If you put something back that’s been worn, [moths are] attracted to this,” Clauss says. Moths will eat through clothing and lay eggs in fabric, potentially ruining an entire closet. If you sweat or spill anything except water, wash the item before putting it back in your closet.

Clauss recommends hand washing knits and button-ups at home, or using the services of a hand laundry, which is cheaper than dry cleaning and also better for the garments. “You’ll see that your cashmere stays really soft,” Clauss says. “It keeps it in better shape than sending it to the dry cleaner.” Plus, the gentle cleaning helps preserve color.

One exception to constant cleaning? Suits. If you’ve only worn a suit once, “leave it on a hanger in an area that’s well ventilated in your home for a day or two before you put it away,” says Clauss. You should only take it to the dry cleaner when it’s visibly soiled.

Store

The way you store your clothing will not only preserve how it looks, it will also extend its life. Most importantly, don’t overcrowd your closet. Clauss avoids space-saving hangers, since storing clothes too close together damages clothing and can attract moths. (Clauss’s handy hack for storing neckties: just drape them over the bar of a standard hanger.)

Suits

“Clothing is meant to be worn on a three-dimensional body,” Clauss says. “So storing [suits] is usually a challenge because a really thin, flimsy hanger doesn’t allow the garment to take the shape it was intended to have.” Choose a hanger with a fuller shoulder to support the garment’s natural silhouette.

Plastic Suit Hangers by Mr. Siga $24

Shirts

Thinner hangers are more appropriate for button-ups, but Clauss prefers plastic over wood, which can release gasses over time. “We use polypropylene hangers because they’re considered chemically stable,” Clauss says.

Clear Plastic Top Hanger by The Great American Hanger Company $29

Pants

Folding pants and hanging them over a hanger bar can lead to unwanted creases. “The best thing to do is to clip the hem of the pants and hang them that way,” Clauss says. To prevent clamp marks, Clauss recommends cutting a small piece of tissue paper to use as a barrier between the clip and pant.

Clear Plastic Pant Hangers by House Day $11

Sweaters

Knits should be folded so that they don’t stretch over time. When you fold a sweater for storage, Clauss advises using a layer of tissue paper to protect against wrinkles. “That way, as you stack sweaters on top of each other, the weight won’t push down [into the] crease and make a permanent wrinkle,” she says.

White Tissue Ream by Crown Display $27

Gear Up

Though there aren’t too many tools necessary for keeping a man’s closet in top condition, Clauss recommends having a basic iron and a $20 Secura steamer — both of which should be kept dry between uses. “The important thing is to change the water,” Clauss says. If you don’t empty the water after each use, you could spread mildew to your clothes the next time.

Instant-Steam Handheld Steamer by Secura $20

DW5080 Focus Steam Iron by Rowenta $73

Curate

A well-organized and -maintained closet need not be stagnant. If you want to buy something new and you have limited space, consider making room by donating items that have fallen out of favor. “One in, one out is a great rule,” Clauss says. If storage space isn’t a concern, Clauss gives the same advice as any investment professional: diversify. “Just try not to buy the same thing over and over again,” she says.

To continue our list of glass drinking bottles we have the Origin Glass water bottle. Each different bottle manufacturer puts their own unique twist onto the water bottle concept and for Origin that splash of personality is found in the spill-proof bamboo twist cap.

The glass itself is a simple design that comes in various sizes (14, 22, 32 oz) to suit different needs, and there is a thick protective sleeve made from silicone to wrap it all up. There are thirteen colors to choose from, but we like seaside Green the best.

As an added bonus, the folks at Origin have decided to give a percentage of the money earned from each of their bottles to a charity responsible for building wells in Ghana, where poverty and lack of good drinking water has become a debilitating issue.

Next up, we have a large glass water bottle from Xtremeglas. The company was started by a veteran who saw a need for a clear glass water bottle with a purpose that goes beyond just holding water in it.

The Xtremeglas solution to many people’s water intake problems is the handy water measurement system complete with time stamps to help keep your eye on (quite literally) your water intake. At 32 ounces, filling the bottle twice solves your recommended daily intake, but it is also a large bottle.

For convenience, the steel lid and nylon carrying strap make for a easy-to-carry and completely spill-proof answer to the cap question. The choice of colors for the silicone sleeve is also a nice touch as we can now enjoy the benefits of silicone in the style we prefer.

The 26-ounce water bottle that we have included here on this glass water bottle master list is a bit of an oddball for two reasons.

For one thing, it is not actually a glass bottle for water. It’s made from a high-quality, PBA-free plastic that looks a bit like glass due to the subtle coloring and transparency. That said, it’s very nice plastic that will not break and will likely last for a very long time. The plastic also helps with the weight. Coming in a just over half a pound, this is the lightest water bottle on our list.

The second thing that really sets this water bottle apart is the fact that it has a built water filter. The filter goes right into the straw, so you can put water from any tap in your bottle and drink it as if you were drawing it from a mountain spring.

Ello Elsie is a water bottle that will stand out from the crowd, no matter where that crowd happens to be. You could bring this glass water bottle to the office, to the gym, or anywhere else, and it’ll look great. The choice of colors for the easy-open silicone flip cap adds a flare of style to the classic milk bottle look that this product is modeled after, and the branding and accents are very tastefully done.

Looks aren’t everything when it comes to glass water bottles though. Many leak and spill, for example, but that is never an issue with the Ello Elsie. Beyond being able to keep contents contained, all the materials used are safe and clean, leaving you free to enjoy your beverages without worry.

Another nice thig about this bottle is that the mouth is large enough for ice cubes, which also means that it is large enough for food items making this a perfect bottle for infused drinks.

When you are ready for something a little bit different, the Zulu Studio might be the one you are looking for. This water bottle comes with all the usual benefits, including durable glass that doesn’t leech harmful substances into your beverages, a sealing lid and a silicone sleeve.

What’s different about this bottle, though, is that fact that Zulu has managed to make all those standard offerings a little bit better. The cap, for example, doesn’t just seal perfectly. It also snaps closed and flips open at the touch of a button, and it can even be locked for times when accidental leaks are an absolute no-no.

As far as the silicone sleeve, the one on the Zulu Studio is one of the thickest we’ve seen, and it features some great-looking design choices as well. The whole package is easy to clean and when it comes time to wash this water bottle, all that is required is quick trip through the dishwasher.

Oh yeah, and did we mention that this glass water bottle is made with the demanding needs of athletes in mind?

BUYING GUIDE & FAQ’S

As you can see, there are a huge number of glass water bottles to choose from but finding the perfect one isn’t always as simple as it seems. Considerations that you have to make include cap styles, material composition, size, and more. Do you need a silicone sleeve or is a nylon carrying case enough?

What type of glass should I choose?

When it comes to material composition you may have noticed from our list that the best glass water bottles are made from borosilicate glass. This type of glass is highly resistant to temperatures changes, meaning you can go from an iced drink to boiling tea in a matter of seconds without worrying about your glass bottle shattering. If you see a bottle design that you like made from borosilicate glass, it’s always a nice choice. Otherwise, be sure that the glass you choose is from a trusted company and is thick enough to withstand normal, daily wear and tear.

Is there a perfect size?

Another thing that you should pay attention to is the size of the bottle. Some people want a bottle large enough to satisfy their hydration needs with only one refill throughout the day, while others want more portable options. Looking at the diameter and height of the bottle that you are considering will help you understand if it’ll fit into your lifestyle. Sizes range from 14 ounces to 32 ounces, and sometimes even higher, so finding a glass water bottle that you will be able to use comfortably is very important.

Does it matter which lid I choose?

The short answer is, yes. Absolutely. Lids come in a few different form factors, and, like everything else in life, the one you choose should depend on how you intend to use it.

Some of the best lids for near-guaranteed leak-proof performance are screw on tops. There are many bottles that feature this lid style because of the inherent reliability that comes with it. Something to keep in mind, however, is that the material the cap is made from. Some water bottle makers choose materials that leave a metallic taste in the water which defeats the purpose of buying a glass bottle in the first place. Others create caps of multiple parts that easily come apart over time, and still others do not add anything in the seal department to guarantee leak-proof-ness.

Other lid styles that are commonly used include flip-top caps (with and without locking mechanisms), screw-on solutions with spouts (with and without straws), and there are even some fiction-fit press on style lids available. The best of all the variations that you will find will be leak-proof, but you’ll also find that each category also comes with its fair share of pretenders. Read through the reviews to see what types of experiences others have with the same cap styles.

Are there advantages to different types of protective sleeves?

Again, yes. The most common type of sleeve that you will find on the best glass water bottles is silicone. The durable nature of the material along with the great look and feel makes it the perfect solution to protect a glass bottle. That said, they are not all the same. Some are made to be removable and other are not. Some are thicker than others offering better protection, and some are made to be more stylish than protective.

If you care about taking your protective sleeve off for cleaning purposes, make sure to choose a bottle that makes that possible. Some manufacturers will include the product description that the sleeve is removable but reading a few customer reviews will tell you that the removal process can take you all day to complete.

Conclusion

If you are looking into buying a glass water bottle, you probably already know at least some of the advantages that glass has over plastic. You might be more focused on the taste benefits or maybe the environmental attributes, you could be concerned for the health of you and your family or perhaps you just want a great-looking water bottle to use at the gym or the office. The truth is, it doesn’t really matter which reason a person might pick for enjoying all that comes with glass water bottles because there are just so many benefits to choose from.

Choosing the right bottle for your particular needs comes down to figuring out how you are most likely to use your new bottle. Are you going to take it to the gym? The office? Are you going to be carrying your new glass water bottle around in your backpack or will it be sitting on top of your desk all day? Each of the products we have covered here comes with its own set of pros, and all you have to do is choose the best one for you.

We’re kicking off our guide in style with the Suunto Core. This has clearly been designed with the great outdoors in mind. It’s just the right size and weight that it won’t feel too clunky or awkward. This means you’ll feel at ease wearing it in any conditions. The bezel is made from high-quality aluminum, while the glass has a durable mineral glass covering that in conjunction with the composite-made casing, provides you with waterproofing up to 30-meters.

It’s built for all kinds of conditions and activities. Along with the digital compass, the features that drew us into this model most were the barometer, altimeter and the weather data you have access to on tap with it. When you’re involved in anything with ascents and elevations, the altimeter is a great feature to have. With the Suunto Core you’re able to keep track on the ascent/descent, the elevation you’re currently at and how you’re progressing in a climb, While the barometer forecasts weather condition changes, by tracking trends in air pressure closely.

There’s no way we could really talk about tactical watches without considering at least one Casio G-shock model. G-Shock watches are known for their big cases, but this GA 100-1A1 has the X-Large G, which provides a rather monstrous 4 x 4.6 x 4.2-inches meaning it’s very comfortable to look at in all situations. It’s an Ana-Digi model that is full of nice features.

Although there’s no altimeter, barometer or compass, it does benefit from having a chronograph, stopwatch, world time checker and a dual-time display. There’s also the 200-meters of waterproofing it offers. Obviously, the biggest draw to other G-Shock watches is the same for this and that’s the magnetic, gravitational and shock resistance it provides.

Given its military-inspired name, it’s no surprise that the Infantry Big Face military watch is durable, tough and therefore, made for various conditions and uses. For one thing, its casing is made by stainless-steel with a canvas strap. You get the choice of either an analog or digital time display and functions with the Japanese-made AL35 quartz movement, which is incredibly reliable, and the calendar features the full date including the day name, date and the month.

There’s also a tachometer around the bezel, dual-time display and chronograph and has 30-meters of water resistance. The dial is protected by minerals with anti-scratch properties. It’s not called big face for nothing, because the face is a massive 47.3mm in diameter and a good quality enough backlight.

Timex has a reputation for designing and producing timepieces that keep good and accurate time, are functional, are highly accurate and timelessly stylish. The Expedition Field chronograph doesn’t disappoint in this regard as it takes inspiration from military watches of old with three different dials with numerals that increase to 60 in increments of 5. This gives you the timekeeping power to measure time at around 1/20th of a second.

Known for durable wristwatches, the Expedition Field will not let you down and as it’s got special mineral glass covering the face with scratch-resistance, it’ll handle significant use and abuse. The water resistance may not be quite the same as offered by other models, but you still get that property for 100-meters. Another great feature is the long-lasting battery that provides you with faithful service for up 10-years.

If you want a combination of style, cool aesthetics, a low price and great functionality, you might want to consider the Armitron Pro Sport digital chronograph. Just take heed, this is a loud-looking watch and not in the least bit inconspicuous. So, if you have covert ops or you know, are a security guard that likes to keep a low-profile, look elsewhere.

The rest of you, keep reading. It is powered by quartz movement which means it keeps impeccable time and best of all, as the name suggests, it has a comprehensive (particularly when you consider the price) chronograph. You can keep military time, it has a dual-time display, measures lap times and displays date, day and seconds. As a nice bonus, it’s also water resistant up to 100-meters. Although you can’t go full-on scuba diving wearing this, you can swim and snorkel while using it. The protective glass on the top of the casing is a high-quality acrylic mineral, while the casing itself is stainless-steel.

It may be that you’ve never heard of the brand 5.11 before. But, trust us, they make some high-performance, high-quality tactical and survival gear. In fact, we’ve featured 5.11 in other buying guides on Men’s Gear. As is the case with many tactical and military watches, you have dual time display with this model. While the outer main dial with phosphorescent arms gives you the civilian time, the inner one gives you the military. Although it’s not quite as obvious as the above wrist watch from Armitron, the 5.11 Field still makes for quite the bold statement, especially with its 44mm casing.

Because this has been clearly designed for military activity (and just about anything else too), it features a casing made from mineral-glass crystals designed to provide chip and scratch resistance. Combine that with the standard water resistance of 100-meters, and you’ve got a lot of protection for a multitude of scenarios and weather conditions. Even style and practicality have been taken into consideration with the strapping made from NATO nylon. Durable is often bandied around too much, not when it comes to this watch though.

Why not buy a military watch that’s proven to be as practical and useful as it’s claimed to be? From their Infantry line, this titanium automatic military watch from GPW is a popular choice. With good reason too. It’s designed by the German Special Forces and is used by many police units and military personnel, not just in German, but around the world. What makes it so special? Well it’s based on the watches used by members of the special forces team and has 24 jewels for precision automatic time-keeping. So, there’s no need for a battery – you just keep it going by moving your arm. Something any infantry, police team or extreme sports athlete is likely to do as default.

Its sandblasted titanium face has a screwed-in locked backing and crown that offers 200-meters of water resistance. Not only that though, but the casing has been designed to stop light reflections. Something you need when you’re trying to avoid drawing attention to your whereabouts. Further protection offered by this awesome watch may only affect those using it in areas of conflict, but we love the fact it is EMP resistant. It’s very expensive, but we think the features and build quality is reason enough for that.

The second Timex tactical watch in our guide is also from the Expedition line. This time it’s the Shock XL model. This feature, like all Expedition models, the chronograph that enables you to time yourself and keep track of your PBs. It also, like the model above, offers a slightly higher water resistance of up to 200-meters. Now, although this will not protect the timepiece against water and depths while scuba diving, it will provide suitable protection for when you’re participating in professional marine activity or extreme watersports on the surface.

Unless you spend a lot of your time around the water, you’ll want other features besides water resistance, and this provides it in the form of shock resistance that meets ISO standards. You also get standard functions like vibration alarms, a countdown timer and stopwatch. As well as the accuracy of its timekeeping, the biggest draw to any Timex watch is the durability, and with the Expedition Shock you get a long old life out of it. The battery alone lasts for 10-years.

The next sexy little (we say that sarcastically, because really, it’s hardly little) is this awesome SureFire 2211 WristLight watch. As the name suggests, the watch has a generously large light incorporated into its design. Speaking about the light for the moment, it produces brightness of a whopping 300-lumens, though you can also switch it to 15 or 60-lumens as necessary. Thanks to the precision-faceted reflector it produces what the company calls a MaxVision Beam. This is wide and spreads evenly.

Besides the light output, there’s also a lot more to recommend this watch. It’s powered by a high-quality rechargeable battery, for one thing and the actual timepiece is a swiss-made Luminox watch with a dial that self-illuminates. As it’s been made using aerospace-grade aluminum and Mil-Spec hard-anodizing, it’s not only lightweight but extremely durable too. Prefect if you want a high-performance watch with a strong on-board light.

As Garmin are best known for developing and producing high-performance GPS navigational devices and systems, it’s unsurprising that the biggest selling point of this sophisticated tactical watch is the GPS elements. That doesn’t come cheap though, but if you’re looking for something that’ll keep track of where you are, where you’ve been, along with many other usual tactical and survival features, this is worth considering.

That’s not all though as it has tactical-focused features such as waypoint projection, Jumpmaster, dual-position GPS-formatting and along with the integrated GLONASS and GPS sensors, there’s also a 3-axis compass, gyroscope, altimeter and barometer. To top that all off, it’s built to be rugged with a titanium bezel coated with tough DLC, has stainless-steel buttons and will even monitor your heartrate.

Although it does not feature a compass or many of the other capabilities of others in our guide, don’t let that put you off the Citizen Eco-Drive watch. For one thing, check out that price tag. It’s more affordable than a lot of the others. You just must decide really if it’ll provide you with enough of the features you really need. If you’re not in law enforcement or the military, this could be a good tactical watch that gives you a little more than the average timepiece for your wrist.

It’s got a very mid-century almost aviator-style, so if you like vintage pieces, you’ll probably love this. Another G-Shock from Casio. This is not as tricked out as the other model, but any watch with the G-Shock moniker deserves some attention if you’re interested in a durable and robust piece designed to last. First and foremost, the winning feature here is the shock resistance. G-Shocks have a sterling rep for being made to survive a whole barrage of wear, tear, use, abuse and assault. Besides that, it also has 200-meters of water resistance, which is a little better than the average watch in our guide.

As well as a digital 12/24-hour clock, it’s also got an auto calendar and date display, and comes with a 1/100th stopwatch and countdown timer. Simplistic, but tough as nails and looks smart to boot!

Another of the more affordable tactical and survival watches in our guide is this attractive little number from a company called Lad Weather. It features a date and day calendar and can be switched easily between 12 and 24-hour clock. You’re not really fussed about all that though, are you? That’s what you’d expect.

The features you’ll be more interested in are the digital compass, the altimeter and the barometer/weather meter. These are essential when you’re out in the great outdoors. The next tactical watch in our guide comes from Israel Defense Store, who provide military-grade watches for various end-users including air force and naval personnel, as well as different SWAT and ground forces. So, you know, with this more than many others in our guide, that it’s been designed and built with professional use in mind. Both reliable and comfortable, this is an analog watch that not let you down. Powered by highly precise and accurate quartz movement and featuring glow in the dark numbers/scales and dials, you’ll always be able to see the time, no matter what the lighting is like.

In addition to these great aspects of the design, there’s also an alarm, timer and stopwatch. Furthermore, the top ring that runs outside the casing’s edge provides tachymeter functionality, which is ideal for even more accurate timing and useful for diving too. The casing has a display window that is made from mineral glass and the whole item has water resistance for as much as 200-meters, while the back and rest are all stainless-steel. The next Casio G-Shock we’re looking at in our guide is also the last we’re looking at from the masters of hard and tough timepieces. The G-Shock Rangeman is no different to any other watches in terms of its shock resistance and water resistance (200-meters puts it above the average tactical and military watches out there) are both highly desirable features. Particularly if you’re intending to do more than just head to the office and back. It’s also designed to have resistance to 14-degrees Fahrenheit and mud resistance. With the casing and buttons sealed to protect against mud, dust and dirt ruining the watch.

However, beyond its durability and robustness, there’s even more reason to invest in a Rangeman. For one, it runs on solar power, so you never have to worry about replacing the batteries or charging them (in the traditional sense). Secondly the watch provides time through multi-band adjustable atomic timekeeping. Therefore, the time will always be accurate. If you think we’re done there, you’re dead wrong as there’s also an altimeter, barometer, digital compass, thermometer and world time. You automatically can have the right time across 48 cities in 31q different time zones. As well as these great extras, there’s also alarms, stopwatches and countdowns that are near standards.

Vostok are a company who originally began in 1942. Once the war happened, only defense equipment was made. After though, Vostok turned its attention to designing and building mechanical wrist watches and that is what the company has been producing ever since. Then in 1965 it was officially appointed as the watch supplier for the Defense Department of the Soviet Union. Fast forward to modern day and the Amphibian is yet another amazing timepiece made by Vostok for professional use where tactical watches and military watches are preferred. The casing is made from hardy stainless-steel that can protect it from water up to 200-meters.

It’s not just water resistance that this watch offers though, as it has incredibly accurate mechanical movements and a power reserve of 31-hours. So, even when your watch is off, if you don’t leave it longer than that time, it’ll keep time for you. Vostok obviously consider comfort to be an important factor as it features a nylon strap. For the penultimate tactical watch, we will be looking at we’re back with Timex and this time it’s the turn of their Ironman Essential 30 watch. One of the great things about this model is the fact that it’s very affordable, compared to some others in our guide and some from Timex specifically. For the lower price, you’ll expect to make some compromises, but, they’re not too big. You still, for example, get 100-meters of water resistance, making it suitable for snorkeling, swimming and showering and the casing is made from durable stainless-steel with an acrylic dial window that protects against most scratches, nicks and chips.

As well as being very rugged and robust, it’s also lightweight only weighing around 1.76-ounces. Timex have been making watches and even tactical watches and military watches for some time now. So, you do get standards like a full calendar display of day, date, month and the choice of 24 or 12-hour display. Although there’s no dials, the digital clock also provides you with a chronograph capable of tracking for 100-hours and 30 laps, a countdown from 24-hours and 3 alarms, with the choice of making them either daily during the week or daily at the weekend. Most crucially though, it may not have the vintage appeal of other Timex pieces, but it still looks rather awesome.

So, we’ve finally reached the final military-style watch in our guide and we’ve certainly not left the least to least. Fossil are known for producing precision-made and durable accessories, not just timepieces, as you’re probably aware but wallets and other items. First things first, we’ll start with the strap for this one, and boy have Fossil chosen a manly looking leather band with a buckle closure. This in conjunction with the three-hand clock display and the additional chronograph dials, make it a thoroughly precise and sexy man’s man of a watch.

Beyond all that, there’s the mechanical movement that stays in good time thanks to your own movement. So, unless you plan on acting like Sleeping Beauty, it’ll continue to keep you in good time. It’s true, it does not offer the same level of water resistance as most in our guide, at just 50-meters. But, compared to the average watch that comes without any at all, it’s a bit of a step up really. BUYING GUIDE & FAQ’S

What Types of Military, Tactical Watches are out there?

As you’ve undoubtedly seen from our reviews in this guide, the terms military watches and tactical watches can be applied to a whole variety of different watches that aren’t necessarily the exact same. To help you understand then, what the basic different types of military and tactical watches are, we’ve outlined them below –

  • General Purpose/Field
  • Pilot
  • Digital Tactical
  • Dive

General Purpose/Field Watches

General purpose, often called field watches, are military watches designed with military and other similar personnel to use in the field. They’re normally typified by their simplistic design, and are durable, robust and built to withstand a multitude of different environments and weather conditions. Many are water resistant to a certain level and shock resistance. You’ll often find that the standard tactical watches feature chronographs, barometers, compasses. But some don’t even feature those. It really depends on your available budget.

Pilot Watches

Pilot watches were first introduced to personnel in aircraft, pilots especially, in the Second World War, to give them the ability to check the time quickly. As pilot watches were obviously designed to be worn over airmen and women’s jackets and uniforms, they tend to have a larger case diameter of 50mm or more. You’ll often find that the design is very uncluttered, neat and minimalist.

Modern pilot watches still follow this principle. Though they’ve been upgraded somewhat in the style department, while maintaining sharp, angled watch hands, slide rule and easy-to-read dials.

Dive Watches

It’ll come as no surprise that dive watches are made to be resistant to water, which is why this is the main feature you’ll find in these kinds of watches. Although the majority you’ll find right now feature 200 to 300-meters of water resistance, if you want to Scuba dive to deeper levels, you might need to consider one of the rarer pieces that allow you to dive even deeper. Of course, if you’re only ever going to be skimming the surface or just below it, then you may be able to get away with just having a watch with 100-meterrs or less water resistance.

Digital Tactical Watches

Digital tactical watches tend to be military-style watches that are suitable not just for military personnel and special ops, but also extreme sports enthusiasts and survivalists. These are usually the most tricked-out watches and feature a multitude of amazing meters and tech, such as altimeters, GPS systems, temperature gauges and weather meters. As is the case with most above, they normally also are water resistant and scratch resistant.

What to Look for when Buying a Tactical Watch?

Although we obviously hope the reviews in our guide help you find the best military watch or tactical watch for you, we wanted to help make your job even easier. Below is a quick and easy to follow guide to the kind of features and capabilities you should be looking for in these kinds of watches.

Weight and Size – You’ll have no doubt noticed that tactical watches are often bulky. Therefore, you need to think about the weight and size of the prospective watches you’re interested in. Particularly as you’ll be wearing it for many hours at a time. You’ll want a watch that will aid you, rather than hinder you.

Digital or Analog – As there’s a healthy supply of both digital and analog tactical watches, you’ll need to decide which suits you best. There’s generally no difference between the two and it’s more about personal taste and preference than anything else. If you can read the watch face, either will provide the support you need. If you can’t decide, don’t worry as there’s some that display both analogue and digital readings of the time.

Water Resistance – It goes without saying, that if you’re working outside constantly in the rain and all-weather conditions that you need a military watch that’s waterproof to some degree. It doesn’t matter if you’re surfing, base jumping, mountain climbing or biking, a police officer, first responder, construction worker or in the military. Besides a few rarities, most watches in our list have some level of waterproofing from as little as 10-meters to as much as 300-meters.

Durability – This is perhaps the most obvious thing you need to be looking for from a tactical watch. You need a watch that’s durable and made to put up with serious use and abuse, intense movements, shocks and impacts. Whether you’re in the armed forces, a security guard or a weekend hiker, you need to consider watches that feature materials like titanium, carbon polycarbonate and aircraft-grade aluminum. Also specifically look for watches that have impact, scratch and shock resistant and use sapphire crystals in the casing window.

What Type of Outdoor Activities can Military, Tactical Watches be used for?

This is a self-explanatory question, but one that’s important to ask. It really depends from manufacturer to manufacturer and timepiece to timepiece, because not all military and tactical watches are designed equally. While some are suitable for use in combat, others are only designed to be used by patrolmen and security guards, while there’s even others that are more designed for outdoor extreme pursuits like hiking and survivalist activities.
