The 12 Best Shampoos for Men

It’s not easy to write about the best shampoo for men, given that no two guys have the same needs for their hair. Couple that with the fact that shampoo, on its own, is a no go. You need to pair it with an excellent conditioner (typically, the brand you use will have a matching conditioner; it’s best you just stick with that, and always follow the washing with the conditioning). But when we break down the various washing needs of most men, it’s easier to spotlight the shampoos we love best — and those we wholeheartedly recommend for you.

Think first about your own hair: Is it long, short, fine, thick, curly, thinning or some combination of those? Is it dry or oily, or neither? Are you prone to sun or heat damage, winter parching or even dandruff? Is it dyed any color of the rainbow, or perhaps platinum blonde or silver? Or is it naturally gray or silver, or even naturally blonde and at risk of turning brassy? Bald men, you’re not off the hook, either. Your scalp is just as prone to dryness, excessive oil, and dandruff and you need to keep a shampoo stocked accordingly.

So, with your specific needs in mind, peruse the list below. These are our favorite products in each corner of the field. Just don’t forget to pair them with a conditioner, in order to ensure fully healthy, soft, and vibrant hair. (Bald men, you’re off the hook on conditioner.) Ideally, you’ll shampoo 2-3 times week, always followed by conditioner (never together), and you can even condition on the days between. Guys with excessive oil may want to wash more frequently or can substitute dry shampoo spray in the mornings between washes (after a conditioner in the show) before they style the hair.

Function of Beauty Shampoo

The Best Custom Shampoo: You can’t have a roundup of the best shampoos without addressing the fact that Function of Beauty can make any kind of shampoo that you need—and can even give you the color and fragrance (or lack thereof) that you want with it. If you have curly hair, they’ll help you pick the ingredients for the task. Ditto for oily, or thinning, or gray, or color-dyed. It’s exciting, too, when the shampoo and conditioner duo arrive in the mail with your name emblazoned on the side of each bottle.

Living Proof Thickening Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Fine Hair: If you have thin or fine hair, then you may want to give it the illusion of fullness. Sometimes, just a simple shampoo can do the trick, since it dries out the hair. However, that’s bad for your hair’s health at the same time, and those fine strands are fragile. Living Proof’s volumizing shampoo gives you all of the volume without the parching — like a dry shampoo spray, only healthier.

Aveda Damage Repair Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Thick Hair: Enriched with quinoa protein, Aveda’s shampoo is technically targeted at damaged hair. But that makes it equally good for thick, wiry hair too, since it softens and conditions the hair while washing it gently. That “gently” is important too: This won’t leave your hair parched and rigid like many shampoos; follow it with a conditioner, too, and this 1-2 regimen will give you cooperative, styleable hair — and enviable too, given its impressive density. (Finally, you’ll agree with that sentiment.)

Christophe Robin Purifying Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Oily Hair: Just as we have toners for oily skin, there are “purifying” shampoos that help balance the oil production in the scalp. Chritophe Robin’s does the job with jujube bark extract, and it calms the scalp on contact too. (For that reason it’s also excellent at preventing or treating dandruff, as well as itching.) Use it daily to keep hair healthy and soft, minus the excessive shine and oil buildup.

Sisley Paris Revitalizing Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Dry Hair: Camellia oil is the key ingredient in Sisley Paris’ restorative shampoo, which brings lifeless, damaged hair back from the dead. It’s like you got a salon blowout and slept with leave-in conditioner. The price is worth it on this one — pair it with the brand’s conditioner and you’ll go from having hair woes, to getting the best compliments on volume, shine, texture and the like.

SheaMoisture Curl Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Curly Hair: Curls need moisture, period. Which is why it’s easy to remember SheaMoisture’s name for any and all curl products and treatments. They are the force to be reckoned with in this game, as is their curl shampoo, which uses coconut juice and oil, shea butter, aloe juice, and hibiscus extract to give your curls a smooth, bouncy, shiny finish — all the way to your hair’s ends. (Like any long style, it’s hard to keep the ends from splitting, so products like this ensure they stay nourished and hydrated.)

Davines MELU Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Long Hair: Long hair has a hard time staying nourished and hydrated, since your scalp’s natural oils have difficulty reaching the ends of each strand. Davines’ MELU shampoo — one of many prescriptive shampoos that they carry — uses lentil seed extract to nourish these long hairs while it washes away grime. It leaves a healthy shine and fortified strands in its wake, making it just as good for shorter, damaged hair that is desperately in need of repair.

Hims DHT-blocking Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Thinning Hair: Guys with thinning hair should do a full-court press on hair loss. In addition to considering medicines like finasteride and minoxidil (both of which Hims offers), they should also deploy shampoos like this one from the brand, which use saw palmetto to fight DHT, the hormone byproduct that suffocates hair follicles and leads to hair loss.

Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Scalp Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for Bald Men: Bald heads need washing, too! And your standard-fare cleanser and bar-soap aren’t typically up to the task. Instead, keep a scalp shampoo in the shower—something that targets dandruff or oil toning. Neutrogena’s T/Gel medicated shampoo is exactly that. It prevents dandruff, itching, and flaking and ensures that your polished dome stays smooth as ever.

Dove Men+Care dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner

The Best Shampoo for Dandruff: Enriched with caffeine and zinc, Dove Men+Care’s anti-dandruff shampoo calms itchy, flaky scalps on contact, and neutralizes most dandruff within a day or three. (Continued use is highly encouraged.) It’s a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, so it also nourishes the hair while it cleans (though it never hurts to follow any wash with a standalone conditioner, especially since it also nourishes the scalp).

Kérastase Shampoo Color-Treated Hair

The Best Shampoo for Dyed Hair: It’s so easy to sabotage dyed hair. UV rays, hard water, everyday product use — it all compromises the color you paid good money to achieve. That’s why you should trust salon staples like Kérastase with your hair: This shampoo uses zinc gluconate to bond the dyeing agents within each strand, fortifying their powers. Linseed oil seeps into the hair to smooth it and reflect light, thus magnifying your hair’s brilliance, while vitamin E thwarts oxidation (which would otherwise lead to color fading).

Sachajuan Silver Shampoo

The Best Shampoo for White, Gray or Silver Hair: This “silver” shampoo is actually purple, as are all of the ones targeted at toning whites, grays, and silvers. Those hairs are at risk of turning brassy in the sun or through product use, whether the hair is natural or dyed. Sachajuan’s purple pigment shampoo tones the color to keep your hair bright and as desired, while also nourishing it and preventing thinning or breakage.

Bremont honors a world record in mountaineering with its Project Possible watch

When defining the call to adventure, we should have the understanding that it is different per individual. Some might define it as camping, hiking, scuba diving, and other similar activities. While others view it as being in situations that could mean life or death. Meanwhile, former Gurkha Regiment soldier and British Special Forces Operator Nirmal “Nims” Purja has another idea in mind. As a brand ambassador for Bremont, the company is commemorating his stellar achievement with the Project Possible watch.

Purja currently holds the world record for climbing all fourteen of the world’s tallest peaks (above 8,000 feet). The previous was set in just over eight years, but he did so in less than seven months. Now, this is what we would call and the ultimate example of an adventure that not many can boast about. Therefore his achievement deserves recognition and it comes in the form of an exclusive version of the Supermarine 500.

This exclusive timepiece arrives in a 43 mm stainless steel case alongside a bronze (CuSn8) bezel with a blue ceramic insert. Likewise, the dial sports another shade of blue, while the hands and indices feature a Super-LumiNova coating. The Project Possible sets the date window on the 3 o’clock position, while the crown is set at and an angle near the 2 o’clock marker.

Furthermore, the transparent case back is equally stunning as it features a rotor with engravings of elevations of each of the 14 peaks. Bremont equips the Project Possible with its BE-93-2AV automatic movement that offers a 42-hour power reserve. Those interested can pre-order it now through the official website.

Hand Sanitizer and Hand Soap: The Differences and How to Use Them

The need to stay safe and healthy can literally be a matter of life and death during the current global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has affected hundreds of thousands of people in a matter of months, impacting countless lives through its spread, not to mention countrywide lockdowns, shelter-in-place mandates, business closures and overburdened hospitals. If we’re able to slow the spread and flatten the curve, the devastating impact of the infectious disease can be lessened.

Coronavirus spreads through moisture droplets in the air, transferred when an infected person sneezes or coughs, as well as via surfaces on which the virus lives. Though the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that coming into contact with contaminated surfaces is not the main way the virus is contracted, viruses can potentially be transferred from these surfaces to our hands which often comes into contact with our eyes, nose and mouth where viruses can enter our body.

So, when it comes to preventing the spread, it is imperative that we take the necessary steps which include cleaning and disinfecting our hands. To learn the difference between hand sanitizer and hand soap, we did the research and chatted with Dr. Linda Hanegawa, MD, a physician at the virtual healthcare platform PlushCare.

Hand Sanitizer

What is it? Hand sanitizer is a liquid or gel used to disinfect the hands. Think products like Purell or Germ-X which are alcohol-based.

How does it work? “Essentially, alcohol disrupts the surface of the virus so that it can’t bind as well,” Dr. Anegawa explains, “Things like bleach, alcohol and like Lysol all kill viruses within about 10 to 30 seconds of contact time.”

Why should you use it? Hand sanitizers can drastically reduce the number of microbes on your hands and using a sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol can be effective at killing germs.

How to use it. The CDC recommends using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol in order to be effective. “Make sure it covers every exposed surface of your hands and give it at least 30 seconds to fully dry,” says Dr. Anegawa. She notes that sometimes people have a tendency to pour hand sanitizer on their hands and wipe off the ‘excess.’ Don’t. Instead, let the sanitizer dry completely.

When and where to use it. Hand sanitizer is not a replacement for hand soap. However, when you don’t have immediate access to a sink with soap, having hand sanitizer on your person is helpful. When you’re out of the house on necessary duties and your hands come into contact with any potentially infected surface (e.g. supermarket pushcarts, debit card readers, door handles, etc.), it’s good practice to use hand sanitizer until you’re back home with a sink and soap. Until then, try not to touch anything else.

Hand Soap

What is it? In technical terms, soap is a salt of a fatty acid used to clean. “There’s a difference between cleaning and disinfection,” explains Dr. Anegawa. “Cleaning is the removal of dirt and impurities from surfaces. And disinfection is the killing of viruses and bacteria that cause disease. Hand sanitizers will only disinfect.”

While disinfection is key, she goes on to say that people underestimate the importance of cleaning as well as disinfection, noting that “If your hands still harbor dust, if they harbor dirt, those are additional surface areas where viruses and bacteria can land and live.”

How does it work? According to Harvard University, soap works “by mechanically removing [germs] from your hands. Running water by itself does a pretty good job of germ removal, but soap increases the overall effectiveness by pulling unwanted material off the skin and into the water.”

Why should you use it? “When you’re in a pinch, hand sanitizer is better than nothing,” Dr. Anegawa says, “but the gold standard will always be soap and water, washing for a good 20 seconds.”

How to use it. Follow this five-step process according to the CDC: 1) Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. 2) Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 3) Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. 4) Rinse your hands with clean, running water. 5) Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them.

When and where to use it. Use hand soap after using the bathroom, before preparing food, after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose and after you’ve been in contact with surfaces that have not been sanitized.

Seiko presents the Astron 5X53 Dual-Time Sport Titanium as a tribute to the original

Occasionally, it is worthwhile to pay homage to something in the past that gave your success. As such, we see certain brands that take nostalgic elements from the original and bring them forward to the modern landscape. Automotive manufacturers, tech outfits, and watchmakers love to revisit their older catalog for inspiration. A great example would be the Astron 5X53 Dual-Time Sport Titanium from Seiko.

From what the name suggests, this is a tribute to 1969 Astron as it celebrates 50 years. The company is offering four configurations of this highly collectible timepiece. As the name already gives it away, the 42 mm case is titanium with a dual-curved sapphire crystal. Depending on the variant, the dial color ranges from silver, black, and green. Furthermore, the latter is only available as a limited-edition version with only 2,000 examples.

The three sub-dials within show another time zone, the day, and power reserve. Meanwhile, the date window is visible between the 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock index. For low-light visibility, the hands and indices of the Astron 5X53 Dual-Time Sport Titanium sport a LumiBrite coating. Unlike the quartz movement of its predecessor, it runs on a Seiko GPS Solar caliber.

Users never have to worry about adjusting the time manually as GPS connectivity assures automated accuracy. Moreover, all four of the models in this collection have metal wristbands and a three-fold clasp with a push-button release mechanism. The Seiko Astron 5X53 Dual-Time Sport Titanium collection will start shipping out this summer. Pricing ranges from as low as $2,860 and goes up to $3,080.

Growing out Your Hair? Here’s How to Maintain It

Any bloke with hair can grow it long and show it off. But those guys who put in the right research, and who invest in their hair care and styling regimen, will outshine the rest. Their long hair will sit better, look healthy, tangle less, cooperate more, and will truly be a hair style, rather than a lazily earned protein nest atop the head.

If you plan to grow out your hair, or if your long hair is in need of some extra attention, then here are the essential products, the best care and styling regimen, and some maintenance tips for the process.

The Products

Shampoo

Although you’re going to shampoo just 1 to 2 times weekly with long hair, you still need to invest in one that doesn’t strip your hair of its natural moisture. Look for shampoos that promise to be both hydrating and conditioning, but never pick one that is a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner. You need to save that second step for its own powers to work. (Read on.) Alternatively, if you suffer from dandruff or itchy scalp, it’s important to prioritize that with a shampoo, especially considering the number of other products you may be applying.

As for ultra-nourishing shampoos, we like Davines’. It soothes dry, damaged hair (which is often the case for long, aged hair), and it also soothes the scalp.

Nourishing Shampoo by Davines $28

Conditioner

While you should only wash your long hair 1 to 2 times per week, you should absolutely be conditioning it daily. There is no harm in doing this — quite the opposite, in fact. Now, more than ever, you need to prioritize the long-term health and ongoing strength of your hair. So, fortify it daily with a soothing, softening conditioner when you shower.

We like Modern Mammals’ daily conditioner, which is launching in December 2019 (pre-order at that link). They’ve spent a year perfecting their formula, which doubles as a shampoo-free rinse of pollution and grime.

Daily Conditioner by Modern Mammals Learn More: Here

Hair Oil

You can use hair oil for a couple different reasons. On the one hand, it helps tame flyaways and keeps hair from frizzing. Better yet, it nourishes dry strands—especially the ends of the hairs, preventing them from splitting—and restores a healthy shine to the hair. (Worry not, a couple drops won’t make your hair look greasy.)

We like Aesop hair oil. Yes, it’s called “Shine,” but you’ll only shine as much as you want. More importantly, it nourishes and defines the hair thanks to ingredients like jojoba, borage seed, and petitgrain.

Shine by Aesop $33

Dry Shampoo

On the non-shampoo mornings, you may notice that some excess sebum has gathered on your scalp, and that your hair isn’t as lively as you’d like. Resist the urge to shampoo, which can dry out all of your hair, and instead target the scalp with some dry shampoo spray. It’ll soak up the excess grime, seemingly disappearing it into thin air, and will give life and volume back to your hair. Use this on rinsed, dry hair, however, as it can clump up if your hair is wet or covered in product.

We like R+Co dry shampoo, since it’s packed with vitamins and proteins to enrich the hair while it soaks up gunk.

Death Valley Dry Shampoo by R+Co $18

Blow Dryer

Get an ionic hairdryer, which helps dry the hair faster, while also minimizing damage. (Typically, faster means higher temps and more damage to the hair; ionic makes your life easier in both senses.) A blow dry will reinforce any product you apply in the morning, and help maintain control over your style throughout the day. It can also give your hair a little extra volume, too, and an ionic one will do so without overdrying and poofing.

We like Conair’s ionic dryer, which also won’t break the bank.

1875 Watt Full Size Pro Hair Dryer by Conair $19

Styling Cream

Your longer hair will often style itself, thanks to gravity and a good texturing from your stylist. However, you’ll still want to apply a dime- or nickel-sized amount of styling cream to it on the daily, to keep control over it. This will prevent any wind sweeping, frizzing, tangling, and the likes. Most people won’t even realize you’re wearing anything. But trust us—you will notice, and you’ll be so relieved for the difference it makes.

We like Oribe’s styling cream. (Or shall we say ‘crème’?) It gives you the control you need without locking your hairs into place. You can run your hands—or those of another — through your hair without compromise.

Crème by Oribe $42

Texture Spray

A texturizing spray, often boasting minerals or sea salts, will give your long hair more definition and body. You can apply it last in any styling regimen, then tousle everything for just the right kind of unaffected surfer-caliber finish. It’s especially good for giving you definition at the middle and ends of the hair, whereas the dry shampoo and creams often work better atop the head. (Though you can and should apply and comb cream or oil throughout the strands.)

We like Fellow Barber’s mineral spray. It combines algae and sea salt for a nourishing and texturizing finish, with definition, texture, and light hold on the menu.

Mineral Spray by Fellow $28

Leave-In Conditioner

Once or twice a week (perhaps on the nights you wash), you can follow your shower with a leave-in conditioner, often called a leave-in mask. You apply it to towel-dried (damp) hair, and typically can leave it in—hence the name. However, some hair masks are designed to be rinsed out after 10 to 20 minutes, so please read the instructions carefully. These products seep deep into the cuticle of your hair to strengthen and soften it, restoring dry, damaged hair to a healthy state—or preventing healthy hair from losing its luster.

We like Sachuajuan’s leave-in conditioner since it works well both morning and night—as the last step before bed or the first step before styling.

Leave in Conditioner by Sachuajuan $28

Comb

This will help you distribute product, tame flyaways and coach hair into place as you style in the morning. You can always tousle the hair once it’s styled if you need to hide comb-tooth tracks.

We like Byrd’s pocket comb. It’s sturdy plastic so it won’t snap, but soft as well when it comes to combing your precious hairs.

Pocket Comb by Byrd $10

Brush

Before bed each night, it’s wise to brush your freshly rinsed (or washed) hair. This helps distribute the natural oils in the hair all the way to the ends so that you avoid splitting and fraying. On the days you wash, when there aren’t as many natural oils in play, you can add a couple drops of hair oil, and instead comb those into place. Do this before bed each night, and you’ll notice an enormous difference in the strength and quality of your hair, and quickly.

We like Verb’s brush because it’s also ventilated, which means you can use your hairbrush while you blow dry, since it allows air to pass through its backside.

Blow Dry Brush by Verb $18

The Regimen

Here’s the best way — and frequency — to utilize the above products.

  • Shampoo once or twice weekly.
  • Condition daily. Always after shampooing, or on its own. Never use it together with shampoo, nor before.
  • On the days you shampoo, follow it with a leave-in conditioner (in the morning, or before bed). Often this can replace your in-shower conditioner for the day if your shampoo itself is nourishing.
  • On the days you don’t shampoo, or the mornings after, use dry shampoo to soak up excess oil.
  • Apply a dime or nickel or styling cream to clean, towel-dried hair in the morning.
  • Comb it through, then blow dry.
  • Add a couple drops of hair oil for added luster or shine, as needed, or to the ends of the hair to control flyaways.
  • On days when you don’t need as much product or regimen, try applying a few drops of hair oil through rinsed, dried strands for just enough control over flyaways.
  • Finish your style with a spritz of texturizing spray in the ends and side of the hair—or at the roots if you want added lift there. Run fingers through hair for a more natural finish.
  • Brush rinsed, towel-dried (damp) hair nightly, to detangle and evenly distribute scalp oils. Add a couple drops of hair oil to the middle section and ends, to help nurture the parts of your hair that aren’t close to the oily scalp.

The Maintenance

Maintaining long hair is much simpler when you focus on a thorough daily and weekly regimen as outlined above. The main things to mind are to avoid excessive exposure to harsh chemicals (like chlorine), as well as harsh sunlight (UV damage affects hair quality, too).

Visit your stylist every 8 to 10 weeks to clean up the ends and texturize the hair throughout your head—this is especially important as it grows out, to avoid awkward in-between stages. Don’t strain about whether or not it negates the “growing out” process. They’re simply layering and texturizing it so it looks healthier and grows evenly.

Be mindful of additional stress on the hair, like with hair ties and hats. This can either pull the hair too taut and cause it to fall out permanently, or it can lead to breakage and fraying at the site of the strain.

16 Style Essentials You Should Have at Home

We love getting dressed. Yes, every single day we get to enjoy the splendor that is fashion, showing off what new-new we copped at this sale or that exclusive drop, or flaunting how smooth our face is because we decided to upgrade our skincare routine.

But style starts at the home, before you go to bed when you moisturize your face, in the shower after you wake up and when you go to your closet to choose your outfit. It happens outside of work hours, when your shoes need some TLC or a button needs sewing. Little upgrades here and there can set you up 10 out of 10 outfit for the day and the right tools can keep that average going for much longer. For that, we’ve put together this list of style essentials for the home, from head to toe.

Gentle Laundry Detergent

First thing’s first: be gentle on your clothes. Use a detergent that’s mild and easy on your clothes. While we like our fragrances and can’t deny that the smell of laundry is objectively good, save the perfumes for your person and not your clothes.

Clothes Drying Rack

This goes for the drying cycle, too. It may take more time to air dry your clothes, but that time you put in pays dividends on your clothes’ longevity (not to mention the Earth).

Proper Hangers

Once your garments are clean and dry, make sure to hang them up with a good hanger. Avoid the flimsy, thin plastic ones if you can. Clothes are made to hang on a human body (which is three-dimensional). When they’re not on you, they should be hung on a hanger with wider shoulders, lest you want your clothes to slowly deform and lose shape over time. Hangers made from cedar wood help to defend your clothes from moths, so opt for these if you can.

Steam Iron

Nobody wants to see a wrinkled shirt. Invest in an iron, especially if the occasion is meeting with investors or your future in-laws.

Ironing Board

For the love of Ralph Lauren, do not try to iron your clothes on your bed or coffee table. Invest in an ironing board, preferably one that has a rack to hold your iron.

Steamer

Steaming your clothes in the shower does not work. It’s good for wasting water and developing black mold in your bathroom. Instead, get an actual steamer that will quickly and effectively get those wrinkles out.

Sewing Kit

Your clothes will eventually need some tune-ups. Plus, learning to sew and mend clothes is a skill you should know since home ec isn’t really a thing anymore.

Leather Soap

After a good bath soak replete with bubbles, surrounded by candles and meditative tunes, maintaining your leather shoes is the next most-relaxing thing. For that, start with some leather soap like this one.

Leather Conditioner

Once you’ve cleaned your shoes, make sure to condition them with some leather lotion or oil. It’s just like the shower.

Horsehair Shoe Brushes

Oh, and before you go to town on your shoe care regimen, make sure you’re using the proper tools.

Reusable Lint Brush

Lint happens. Rather than using lint rollers that you constantly have to refill, try a reusable lint brush.

Nail Clippers

Now let’s shift the focus to you. Unless you’re going for a world record, keep your nails trimmed and neat.

Beard Trimmer

Taming a mane, trimming the hedges or having a Britney Spears moment, an electric trimmer is there for you.

Grooming Scissors

For those who are deft with scissors to do some mane maintenance, a solid pair of grooming scissors stretches your dollar more than trips to the barber.

Gentle Soap

Like treating and caring for your clothes, you want to be gentle on your skin, too. Try a soap for sensitive skin that’s free of scents and harsh ingredients.

Lotion

Even the most gentle soap can wash away some of your skin’s natural oils. Follow up the wash with a good lotion to prevent dry skin and keep your natural moisture barrier intact.

Why the Carhartt Detroit Jacket Is a Classic

The pantheon of workwear is divvied up between brands like Levi’s, Dickies and Ben Davis, comprising centuries of heritage. Among them stands Carhartt, claiming 130 years of tough garments. The brand started in 1889 and has churned out its share of durable icons throughout the last century.

While many know Carhartt for its chore coat, painters pants and hoodies, the Detroit Jacket is quitely popular and is firmly set as one of the brand’s classics.

First introduced in 1954, Carhartt’s Detroit Jacket is comparable to vintage Ricky jackets and garage jackets. It has two hand pockets, a zip-up front, a pointed collar and adjusters at the waist. Though one of its most recognizable features is its hardy 12-ounce cotton duck canvas, it was originally introduced in denim.

“We actually didn’t call it the Detroit Jacket until 1998,” explains Carhartt Archivist Dave More. “It was just known as the ‘Zipper Jacket’ for many, many years. Early on, it was one of the only jackets in our product offering that had a zipper.” Before the style got its modern moniker, it was described as an Eisenhower-style jacket, after the woolen military jacket sported by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. That design featured a short length, two flap pockets, a storm placket with hidden buttons, a notch lapel and epaulets. If you’re counting, the similarities are few. Other than the short length, Carhartt’s jacket bears little resemblance.

For a jacket that was first marketed toward construction workers, the lack of pockets may be a headscratcher. But the key to its functional design is the shorter length, which sits just above a worker’s toolbelt. The stripped-down style also helps the jacket translate outside of the job site.

“It has a simple, authentic style and fabric that appeals to a wide range of people,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “It’s an easy go-to jacket that can work from the job site to weekend adventures.” Alongside the basic utility, the tough duck canvas has garnered fans for its ability to age and develop a beautiful patina — well-worn and faded vintage pieces often fetch more money than box-fresh versions. “The fabric and color were intentionally developed to get that worn-in look with age,” Ferraro says. “Today, we have softened the fabric, but didn’t take any of the durability out of it, and we wash the jacket before it leaves the factory to give it a more comfortable feel.”

The Detroit Jacket was catapulted from the construction site to the limelight when young hip-hop musicians took an interest in the style. It was donned by the likes of DJ and hip-hop producer Prince Paul before Kanye West adopted it into his wardrobe. Tommy Boy Records, which is credited for launching the careers of artists like Queen Latifah and De La Soul, even used the jacket as a promotional piece, embroidering its logo onto it and distributing it amongst tastemakers to great success. Today, original Tommy Boy Records Detroit Jackets can cost well over $1,000.

While coveted Japanese labels like Neighborhood and Bape have collaborated with Carhartt on the Detroit Jacket, many others — including Fear of God and Ralph Lauren — have looked to it for inspiration.

The Detroit Jacket reached an even greater audience when it was featured prominently throughout Christopher Nolan’s space epic Interstellar. When approaching the film, lead costume designer Mary Zophres looked to the jacket for its enduring design. “It should be completely timeless,” she says. “Even though we’re 50 years in the future, we’re not trying to predict how clothes are gonna look… We wanted a certain level of age and classic styling.”

The Detroit Jacket’s iconic design got its first real update in decades in the fall of 2019. “We’re constantly out in the field talking to people, interviewing our Carhartt Crew about our products and reviewing any feedback we receive,” says Ferraro. The 2.0 version adds extra length in the body as well a drop tail for better coverage. It also bumps up the comfort, with a softer blanket lining and a washed-down duck canvas in place of the rigid duck decades of Carhartt diehards have known. But, for a brand that seemed to have caught lightning in a bottle back in 1954, the choice to change the formula wasn’t taken lightly. “We’re constantly rethinking things and making sure as times change, we’re still serving the consumer,” says Moore. “We’re not gonna not listen to them just because something’s been around for so long.”

The first significant design change since its inception will undoubtedly have some longtime fans upset. But like the Converse Chuck Taylor, the Levi’s 501 and a handful of other iconic, time-tested garments, this legendary piece will continue to live on, and, like its fabric, will continue to get better.

A 7-Day Skin Serum Treatment for $150: Worth It or Not?

In my tried-and-tested opinion, serum is one of the best things you can add to your skincare regimen. A serum seeps deep into your skin and, depending on its abilities, can boost hydration and moisture retention, correct dark spots, firm skin, clear pores, prevent breakouts, brighten complexion and more. You apply it to freshly cleansed skin, before adding a more dense moisturizer over top. (Whereas the serum is more proactive or corrective, the moisturizer is nourishing and defensive: It hydrates the outermost layer of skin, and also acts as a shield against environmental toxins—and UV damage, if it contains SPF. Moisturizer is the more necessary step, if we’re talking basic skincare essentials.)

Adding serum to your regimen is an upgrade, even if it’s a low-cost, safely formulated hyaluronic acid serum that is designed to retain moisture in your skin. And in some cases, more calculated and highly concentrated serums can be a luxurious upgrade: I was able to get my mitts on Dr. Barbara Sturm’s overnight serum ampoules, a 7-night pack of 2-ml serum vials (again, applied after cleansing or showering, and before a nighttime moisturizer). They are the same formula that Dr. Sturm uses in her 30 ml night serum. When you crunch the numbers, that means you’re using about half of the volume of her traditional $310 night serum in a one-week period, hence the $150 sticker of the ampoules. The 30-ml bottle, when used more sparingly, should last you a month or more, assuming you apply just 3-4 drops per night.

The ampoules are intended to provide users with a high-volume, fast-acting boost to the skin. Here are the ingredients each ampoule contains, plus its benefits: cotton thistle extract, to calm stressed skin; senna alata extra, an antioxidant that also reverses UV damage; poria cocos mushroom extract, to tone oil production and balance skin’s pH levels; beta-glucan reduces redness; purslane reverses and prevents signs of aging; molecularly balanced hyaluronic acid to significantly boost and preserve moisture levels in the skin (holding up to 1,000 times its own weight in water).

So, after my test run—what was my verdict? It was timed well, to a post-Brazilian carnival party onslaught, and an overseas flight. My skin was tired, dry, breaking out. Did I see a boost in my complexion, plus increased firmness, and brightness? Yes, definitely. But, I did note some pros and cons to the ampoules. Here are my thoughts:

Why You Should

It’s an effective, quick fix to tired skin. All those ingredients, plus the 2-ml volume of each ampoule, yields serious skin-brightening and firming results, especially since they sync with your body’s circadian rhythm to replenish and rejuvenate cells while you sleep. It’s the perfect recipe for a well-rested, age-reversing, bender-neutralizing result. Call it a complexion treatment, or a topical IV for your complexion.

The name is trusted. Dr. Sturm is held in very high regard in the industry. She takes a scientific approach to her production — and a precisely German one at that — selecting ingredients and formulas that work hard, fast and effectively. There’s a noticeable difference between, say, her $300 hyaluronic serum and the $10 one you can buy on Amazon. Hers is lab-tested, a “low- and high-balanced” formula that seeps into skin while also nourishing cells at the surface. There’s essentially 0 percent risk of anything going awry. If what you want is fast and lasting results, look to Dr. Barbara Sturm. (Though any future benders, dehydration and lack of sleep will quickly undo the results. Much of this is on you to maintain with smart daily habits.)

You don’t need to do them all in one week. While I took a weeklong “recovery” approach to the ampoules, you can keep them for single-night “brightness emergencies,” or a lavish Sunday night — perhaps after a bath and face mask. At roughly $21 per ampoule, this is a luxurious product, and each one is single-use. Heck, there’s enough in each ampoule that you and a partner could get a high-powered dose during an at-home spa night.

Why You Shouldn’t

The cost. There’s no way around it: $150 for 7 vials is a steep price. Chances are, though, if you’ve read this far, you’re someone who would consider it. So, this may not be a negative after all. (Besides, they do work wonders.) But, there are many excellent serums out that that cost half or a quarter of the price.

It’s a lot of serum for a single use. Because each ampoule is single-use, you need to empty the high-value, 2-ml vial each time you snap one open. That’s enough serum for your face, your neck, your ears, maybe a little extra for your hands — typically you only need a few drops to cover the entire face. But, that’s why these ampoules work well as a quick booster — the volume is their selling point. However, at that price, it does feel like some of it goes to waste, and that’s tragic because it’s such a terrific product.

Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Night Serum employs the same formula. Both these ampoules and a 30-ml night serum were released in tandem this month, and they contain the same formula. The difference, however, is that the night serum can be deployed on an as-needed basis (and is still easy to tote while traveling). Thus, you can get approximately 30-60 nights of use from the nighttime serum as opposed to 7 from the ampoules. If you’re playing a long game (as you should be anyway), rather than seeking a fast fix, then the serum is a better buy. The cost measures out to be nearly the same, when you consider the volume (14 ml in the ampoules for $150 versus 30 ml in the serum for $310). Plus, with the serum, you can always up the dosage if you want to.

The Verdict

These ampoules work. Your skin feels firmer, both instantly and in the days that follow. It looks more radiant, nourished and healthy. But, I do think that you can enjoy the same powerhouse benefits with half the dosage, or even a quarter of the dosage. Regardless, you can decide for yourself if you instead buy Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Night Serum, which uses an identical formula. Yes, it’s more than double the cost, but it goes anywhere from 5-9 times further than the ampoules if you use a few drops each night. If that’s still steep and you want to give the formula a try, you can always use the Mini Night Serum, which gives you 10 ml in a smaller eye-drop bottle, for $115. It should last you 2-4 weeks.

10 Great Sweatpants to Wear at Home

Sweatpants are the epitome of casual, but you don’t have to just wear them chillin’ at home. The best are comfy enough for a day inside but ready to step out if need be. They come in all kinds of materials from all-cotton fleece-back jersey, to super comfy tri-blend concoctions or high-end cashmere and velour versions. Whether you’re headed out with slim pair and rare sneakers or are staying in, laissez-faire style, loose and lounge-y with your favorite slippers, these are some of our favorite, most stylish sweatpants.

J.Crew Marled Brushed Fleece Pant

You can’t go wrong with J.Crew’s basics. These online-exclusive sweatpants feature a brushed fleece that’s super soft against the skin, pockets, drawstring waist and elastic hem all in a perfectly-fitting relaxed cut.

American Giant Classic Sweatpant

While most brands cut costs by introducing blended materials, American Giant produces its sweats in North Carolina using 100% cotton fleece. At just about nine ounces, the fabric is a great all-around weight and comes in a range of colors. The rear wallet pocket lets you know these are ready for going out, but you’ll be just as happy hanging at home wearing these, too.

Stüssy Logo-Embroidered Fleece Sweatpants

If your style is more cozy in the sheets and in the streets, OG skate brand Stüssy has your bottom half covered in bright fluffy fleece, inside and out. It draws on the retro styling of the ’90s and looks just as well with kicks and a skateboard as it does tucked underneath a comforter.

Polo Ralph Lauren Cotton-Blend-Fleece Pant

If you like to control your own destiny, Polo Ralph Lauren’s sweatpant includes drawstring adjustments at both the waist and the ankles. The cotton-polyester blend is among the softest at this price point and it has just enough heft to feel the upgrade from other options on the market.

Schiesser Vincent Tapered Fleece-Back Cotton-Jersey Sweatpants

Germany-based brand Schiesser has been around since 1875 and has gotten damn good at making knitwear. The premium brushed fleece interior feels like a warm blanket, but the amount of pockets it has makes it ready to jump out of bed if need be.

Standard Issue Standard Sweatpants

These might be called the Standard Sweatpants, but the burly all-cotton loopback fabric is more than twice as heavy as your average sweatpant. Made in the USA, these might be the last sweats you’ll need for the foreseeable future.

Reigning Champ Loopback Cotton-Jersey Sweatpants

Reigning Champ produces some of the best knits out of its Canadian factory and its got legions of fans to show for it. Its sweatpants give an old-school vibe with drawstrings at the waist and hem, a beefy all-cotton fabric and flush flatlock stitching that won’t irritate against the skin.
