Blundstone Is Celebrating 150 Years with A New Boot

It makes sense that most “household” names — like Kleenex, Band-Aid or Tupperware — make products for the household. But then there’s Blundstone — a brand that’s been around longer than all three and makes such an iconic, recognizable product that its name is nearly interchangeable with the term “chelsea boot,” except “Blundstone” comes with a quality guarantee. Believe it or not, the legendary boot brand is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, Blundstone is releasing a limited Anniversary Series #150 Boot. Learn more about the unique design below.

2.

Custom Details: Aside from the new colorway, the Blundstone limited-edition #150 Boot features a few more customizations in celebration of the big milestone, such as an embossed, limited-edition “150th” stamped into the heel of each boot, updated pull-tabs with “150 years” stitched into the front and “150th” hand screen-printed on the bronze leather lining.

3.

Classic Comfort: Like all of their products, Blundstone’s limited-edition #150 Boot features the brand’s patented SPS Max comfort system, which provides impact absorption and reduces fatigue in the lower back, legs and feet. The 9 Best Chukka Boots to Buy

About as casual as all-leather boots get, the chukka (or desert) boot was first worn by British soldiers in Africa during World War II. Afterward, they made their way across the Atlantic, becoming a casual staple for the second half of the 20th century and still gracing the feet of stylish men in the cooler months. Clarks made the originals, but upmarket offerings only improved on the formula. They lace up just above the ankle and traditionally feature a soft crepe sole.

The Best Jeans You Can Get for Under $50

When Levi Strauss invented blue jeans in the 1800s, he charged $1.25 per pair. A buck twenty-five won’t get you much these days, certainly not a pair of jeans. By contrast, a pair of original-original Levi’s can now fetch nearly $100K, but most people aren’t looking to spend that much for some dungarees.

If you don’t want to spend more than $50 for a pair of jeans, there are still plenty of options; some better than others. Here are the ones worth grabbing.

501® Original Shrink-to-Fit Jeans

Levi’s zappos.com

$41.65

Best All-Around Jeans

You can still get a pair of raw denim for a pittance and it’ll come from the originator itself. The 501 Shrink-to-Fit Jeans are the gold standard that every other brand tries to emulate and you can’t get much better than this for much cheaper. Plus, you can frequently find ’em on sale for even sweeter savings.

Selvedge Classic Fit Jeans

Uniqlo uniqlo.com

$29.90

Selvedge denim used to be reserved for denimheads willing to spend a few hundred dollars on their blue jeans. Uniqlo figured out a way to bring it to the masses for much cheaper. These jeans come raw and ready for you to fade yourself. If you’re looking for a more comfortable experience straight off the rack, Uniqlo’s non-selvedge options will also fit the sub-fifty bill.

501 Original

Levi’s zappos.com

$49.99

Sub-$50 jeans doesn’t limit you to just blue jeans. The original blue jean would obviously make this list, and so does its optic white variant.

Rugged Flex Relaxed Fit Utility Logger Jeans

Carhartt carhartt.com

$49.99

If you’re looking for something with double the durability, Carhartt’s double-knee Logger Jeans is it. Made from a beefy 15-ounce denim with a hint of stretch, it’s got enough heft without sacrificing comfort.

Premium Performance Cowboy Cut Slim Fit Jean

Wrangler amazon.com

$42.00

The jeans of choice for cowboys, Wrangler’s jeans are tough as they come. Though Wrangler makes a full variety of different fits, it’s perhaps best-known for its bootcut jeans. These are made without any elastane, just all-cotton denim and feature a slim cut that’s long enough for some serious stacking.

Easy Taper Jeans

gap gap.com

$28.00

Gap got its start in blue jeans in 1969 and has been a go-to for the classic five-pocket ever since. Though many of its jeans are over fifty bucks, you can frequently find them on sale. These are perfectly washed out jeans that are great for year-round wear thanks to its 12.5-ounce denim. Plus, if you’re more conscious of your consumption, they’re also made using recycled cotton to reduce its impact.

Slim Everyday Flex Jeans: TENCEL™ Denim Edition

Madewell madewell.com

$42.00

Madewell jeans are known for great-fitting cuts in equally appealing washes. While its jeans average over $100, Madewell’s frequent sales mean you can catch some serious deals without waiting too long. These light-wash jeans are made using Japanese denim from Kaihara mills (a favorite of self-professed denim obsessives) and come with a handful of tencel, making them one of the most comfortable you can find.

How to Buy a Better-Fitting Dress Shirt

Welcome to Guide to Life, a series of tips, tricks and insights designed to help you get the most from your gear.

Dress shirts may be playing second, or more likely, third fiddle to other shirts these days. T-shirts and sweatshirts are the go-to garments for people working remotely. But, many companies rely on Zoom meetings for internal and external communication, so there’s still a need to dress professionally.

While the shapes of T-shirts and sweatshirts are more forgiving, the designs of dress shirts are not. With the increased attention to your upper half in video meeting, you’ll need one that fits well. There are numerous variables to get to the right-fitting dress shirt. It’s a complicated journey, but we’re here to walk you through every step. Here’s how to buy a better-fitting dress shirt.

Know Your Measurements

Before you even look at a dress shirt, you need to do a little data entry. Knowing your body measurements is imperative for dialing in a great-fitting shirt, especially if you’re not able to try it on at the store.

You’ll need a tape measure and someone to help take your measurements. Here are the measurements you should take:

  • Neck: The thickest part of the neck.
  • Shoulders: The length across the back from one shoulder bone to the other.
  • Arms: From the center of the neck, to the shoulder, down to the wrist bone.
  • Chest: Around the widest part of the chest, usually at the nipples.
  • Waist: Around the widest part of the torso, usually at the belly button.

    Shoulders

Let’s start with something that you absolutely need to get right. There’s not much leeway here. The shoulder seams should fit right at your shoulder bones. Too high and the fabric can pull, too low and it’ll look sloppy.

    Chest

The chest is another area you should really have dialed in. Tailors can work wonders, but the chest (and shoulders) are tough to fix. Make sure you still have enough room (at least two inches more than your measured chest) so that the fabric isn’t pulling at the buttons as you move. You also want to avoid having too much room at the chest to avoid bunching.

Higher armholes offer a sleeker silhouette and more range of motion while more traditional, lower armholes can be more comfortable, but look a bit stuffy.

    Gitman Bros Vintage Classic Oxford

    Gitman Bros

    Neck

These days, the value of a neck tie continues to decrease. Still, you’ll thank yourself for getting the right neck size on the rare occasion you’ll need to button your shirt all the way to the top. As a general rule of thumb, make sure your neck measurement allows enough space to fit two fingers. This way, you won’t succumb to asphyxia by a double four-in-hand.

    Sleeves

Manufacturers list their sleeve measurements two main ways. The first is the measurement taken from the center of the collar to the shoulder seam and down to the cuff. This measurement will likely be somewhere between 32 to 36 inches. The second measurement is only taken from the shoulder seam down to the cuff and will likely be around 14 to 18 inches.

Classicists will tell you that your sleeve should be long enough to cover your wrist bone when your arms are raised out in front of you. For a more modern fit, however, sleeves need only to touch cover the wrist when your arms are relaxed and down by your sides.

    Waist

While dress-shirt makers often size their shirts by neck and sleeve, the waist is another area to focus on. Two people could have the same neck and sleeve measurements but vastly different waist measurements. Again, make sure that the fabric isn’t pulling at the buttons. Leave enough room to move around comfortably, but not so much room that it looks like its overflowing from your trousers when you tuck it in. And remember, the waist measurement for your jeans is not the same as the measurement for your dress shirt.

    Length

A dress shirt is a shirt you’ll wear tucked into a pair of dress pants. There are plenty of brands that make button-up shirts that can navigate a more casual, untucked situation, but they’re generally not great at either. That said, a dress shirt should be long enough that it stays tucked in, even when you raise your arms. This should be long enough to cover about half of your rear. As with many of the tips here, because everyone has a unique body, this one is a rule of thumb.

    Take it to Your Tailor

You may not be able to get every variable to fit well. That’s to be expected. As restrictive as a dress shirt’s fit may be, there is still margin to play with. Namely, the sleeves and the body. These are the most common alterations tailors perform when it comes to dress shirts. If you’re not able to get the exact sleeve length or body width, make sure to get a shirt that’s slightly bigger so that a tailor can cut it to the correct size.

That said, you need to make sure that the chest and shoulders are as close to perfect as you can get. These areas are trickier to alter and require a very skilled tailor and a solid line of credit.

    Do Your Research

There are plenty of brands that offer a variety of dress shirts online. Make sure to thoroughly look at their measurements and compare them with your own. If you have a well-fitting dress shirt already, compare its measurements with the options you’re considering.

Other shirting brands offer made-to-measure shirts. These are really convenient and usually just plug-and-play. Enter your measurements, choose your fabric and other details, and you wait for it to show up at your door.

There are many paths to a well-fitting dress shirt whether you’re looking for off-the-rack, made-to-measure or want to tweak the fit of your existing dress shirt. Once you nail down the right fit, you’ll be one of the best-dressed people on the Zoom call.

Mystery Ranch’s Street Mask Is a Beacon of Comfort

By now, you’ve learned that not all masks are created equal when it comes to comfort and materials — two things that Montana-based Mystery Ranch knows well. But when the brand went to craft masks for today’s new normal, it did so first to fill the needs of its local healthcare workers. Mystery Ranch manufactured and donated masks to healthcare professionals at the Bozeman Hospital. It then tweaked and refined the designs to launch on its website and offer to consumers. One of the designs is the Street Mask, which features a 3D-contoured design paired with an adjustable nose bridge piece and stretch TPU headband. It also offers a seamless construction and a liner comprised of a tight cell structure material. Top it off with the Mystery Ranch Spinner logo and Black, Forest, Navy and Tan colorways — what’s not to like? Watch the video on how Mystery Ranch executed this initiative below.

How to Pack a Carry-On Suitcase

Welcome to Guide to Life, a series of tips, tricks and insights designed to help you get the most from your gear.

Before you travel, it’s worth taking time to consider how you pack. While your main focus may the the destination, a thoughtful approach to packing your carry-on will make your trip much easier. The combination of what you pack and how you pack it can reduce stress while you’re on the move. To help you best prepare, we talked with some experts to get their advice on how to pack a carry-on suitcase.

Before you pack

“Before I even start packing, checking the weather of my destination a day or two before is of utmost importance,” says Ron Griswell, an outdoor educator and activist. It sounds obvious, but this will dictate most of what you pack. While your toiletries may remain constant, an accurate picture of the weather will dictate the types of layers you bring.

After you check the forecast, make sure your other travel necessities are in order. Refresh your toiletries, charge your electronics, load up your music playlists and make sure your car has enough gas to get to and from the airport. “I don’t know how many times I’ve been stressed out by running late to the airport because I had to stop and fuel up,” Griswell says.

It’s also important to not pack at the last minute. “I used to stay up late packing the night before well into the day,” Griswell says.”I discovered that nothing is worse than being sleep deprived on a plane.” He even goes on to say that getting enough sleep is the most important thing before getting to the plane. We’re inclined to agree.

Edit, organize, compartmentalize

Griswell suggests a minimalist approach when packing a suitcase. Tidying expert and bestselling author Marie Kondo agrees. “With a carry-on, space is limited – choose carefully,” she says. “Before I pack, I review my itinerary and select the items that will maximize my “spark-joy” moments for the trip.”

Packing a suitcase isn’t about stuffing as much as you can into the confines of your luggage. You should be efficient and thoughtful when you pack, editing, organizing and compartmentalizing your suitcase. Consider how long you’ll be traveling, and then select enough clothes for the duration of the trip. From there, edit your selection, but pack one extra outfit just in case you get caught in the rain.

When organizing, packing cubes are great tool. Use these to separate your shirts, pants, electronics and toiletries. Not only will they keep your suitcase cleaner, they’ll make unpacking and repacking far easier.

Roll your shirts, fold your pants

“The key when packing is to store clothes upright almost like you’re filing things,” Kondo says. This makes your garments easily visible when you’re unpacking, and it also takes up less space in your suitcase and prevents wrinkles.

For thinner clothes like shirts, start by folding the garment in half, lengthwise. Then, roll the garment and place it into the packing cube standing up.

Heavier clothes like sweaters, jackets and pants are made from thicker fabrics, so they’re less prone to wrinkling. “Rolling clothing made of thick fabrics will only make them thicker — it’s better to fold them,” Kondo says. “Since I fold my clothes like this at home, it’s easy for me to pack quickly the day before I travel. I transfer items from my drawers straight into my suitcase — and when I’ve reached my destination, I put them straight into drawers at the hotel.”

Shoes

Shoes and boots can be very difficult to pack. They take up a large amount of space and can be difficult to fit among your other necessities. If you can avoid bringing extra pairs of shoes, then do it.

If not, make sure to stash them in a dust bag to protect your other items from getting dirty. Keep your shoes stuffed with shoe trees to prevent them from being crushed in transit. But if you’re short on space, stuff them with your socks

Bring your own shampoo

Your Dopp Kit keeps your toiletries and grooming supplies in one place. While some like to pack it in a carry-on backpack, others opt to stash it in a suitcase. Either way, travel-sized bottles are a simple packing hack. Just fill them with your go-to shampoo, conditioner, soap and mouthwash. They’ll save you from buying travel-sized toiletries from the drug store that you won’t actually want to use.

Keep the snacks in your backpack

For items you may want to access during the flight, consider packing them separately in your carry-on bag, the one that goes under your seat. These are things like your laptop, water bottle, medication, hand sanitizer and snacks. Keep everything else in your suitcase. “No one should be hovering over people while the seat belt sign is on digging through socks and underwear looking for whatever it is they need,” Griswell says. “Foresight goes a long way.”

Where Do We Go After Brooks Brothers?

Brooks Brothers is an institution. The brand has been around since 1818 and was the first ready-to-wear brand in America. At just over two centuries old, it’s been through more than the vast majority of brands and has been instrumental in building up American style. From the introduction of the sack suit, the codification of the button-down shirt and popularization of madras, Brooks Brothers is a stalwart in prep.

But the coronavirus pandemic has made the company’s future uncertain. Casual-wear’s rise and Brooks Brothers’ failure to adapt led to years of declining sales and COVID-19 pushed it over the financial edge. In July, it was announced that Brooks Brothers had filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. After some financing and courting, the brand was recently sold to Authentic Brand Group, the same company that swooped on the bankruptcy of famed department store Barney’s. With ABG seeking to inject the brand with new blood, helmed by some yet-to-be-named ‘big-name designer’ with a focus on sportswear, Brooks Brothers is hoping to pull itself back up.

But if it doesn’t, what’s left? If the changing of the guard doesn’t save Brooks Brothers, where can its customers turn to? While no one brand can really replace it, here are some options that can fill the gaps.

Original Madras Trading Company

Huckberry

In the late ’50s, Brooks Brothers would turn a fashion faux pas into a commercial success with its line of Madras shirts. The fabric used natural vegetable dyes which were not so color fast and would bleed if not washed gently in cold water. Brooks Brothers would only hear about this characteristic from its customers who would complain about their bleeding shirts. Instead of recalling its shirts, Brooks Brothers leaned into them and marketed its bleeding fabrics as a sign of authenticity.

While the brand obviously wasn’t the one to invent to invent the fabric, it did much to boost the popularity of the Indian-born fabric. Original Madras Trading Company is the real deal. Made entirely in Madras, the brand has decades of experience with the fabric and uses it to make classic button-ups as well as jackets and pants.

Zinvo imbues an aviation-inspired design for its Blade Titan wristwatch

Not long ago, we had the pleasure of showcasing a couple of outstanding timepieces form Perrelet. Among the two, perhaps the most striking was the limited-edition Turbine Camo as flaunts a unique presentation. However, at approximately $5,690, it might be too steep for most folk. If what you’re after is something with aviation undertones, The Zinvo Blade Titan might be something worth considering. Drawing inspiration from a jet turbine, this wristwatch does flaunt a unique aesthetic.

The Perrelet offering has a different approach wherein the blades spin along with the oscillating weight of its automatic movement. Zinvo, on the other hand, delivers a more dynamic element even when the user’s wrist is not in motion. You see, the instead of your typical second hand, the Blade Titan uses a titanium 1-second spin turbine system instead.

44 mm x 12 mm case is fashioned out of titanium with a military green plating to give an attractive satin finish. This extends to the lugs, while the crown and flange are in black with a similar finish. Instead of Arabic or Roman numerals, the hour markers circular cutouts. To match the style, the dial features a spiral pattern that makes it look like a jet turbine spinning slowly in idle.

As for the hour and minute hands, these sit behind the turbines of the Blade Titan and just peek out of the edges. Meanwhile, low-light visibility is not a problem thanks to the Super Lumme coatings. Zinvo is using a reliable Seiko NH35 automatic movement. Finally, a 24 mm two-tone silicone strap with metal buckle holds it in place.

Champion’s New Sportswear Collection Is Built for Gamers

When it comes to sportswear–actual clothing, not just sneakers–there are few brands with the kind of history and heritage that Champion has. Our favorite maker of low key hoodies and sweats just unveiled their latest…

This Detail Is a Major Reason Why People Pay Hundreds for Jeans

Over the past decade, both fashion nerds and the fashion curious were lured to style-focused sites, blogs and forums to be romanced by raw denim. It came at a time when men’s style was thirsty for anachronism, latching onto classic workwear designs. Denim’s history, archaic insider rituals and fade-it-yourself mentality — not to mention the fervent perseverance of Japanese brands reproducing vintage Levi’s — drew fans to buy their first pair of expensive jeans.

While much of the denimhead’s journey is in the denim itself, there’s one detail that really makes the fabric even more special: selvedge. It’s a detail that went from being esoteric to a full-blown trend that fashion’s biggest labels capitalized on. You’ll likely find it on a pricey pair of jeans, but what exactly is it? And, why is it more expensive?

The term ‘selvedge’ is a compound of the word ‘self edge’ which itself is shortened from ‘self-finished edge.’ This refers to the part of the fabric which is at either end of the weft yarns (the yarns which run horizontally). Here, rather than an unfinished edge which needs to be finished to prevent fraying, the fabric is woven in such a way that it is already finished.

While modern projectile looms weave the weft yarns row by row separately, vintage shuttle looms weave the weft yarns in a single continuous thread which doubles back once it reaches the edge. This is what results in the self-finished edge that hardcore denim fans lust after. But, selvedge can be found on a variety of fabrics other than just denim, including canvas, oxford cloth, poplin and more.

Chase Pellerin

Many times, the weave of the selvedge is different than the main fabric. For instance, denim is typically woven as a twill fabric, which gives it its characteristic diagonal grain. The selvedge, in contrast, is often woven as a plain-weave.

As a means of identifying a particular fabric, selvedge often includes contrasting colored yarns. This is referred to as the selvedge ID and is most commonly seen as a red line between two white lines. This is why some enthusiasts refer to it as ‘redline’ denim. But, selvedge IDs can come in a variety of colors other than the conventional redline.

To preserve as much fabric as possible, the selvedge was historically incorporated into the outseams of jeans, running all the way from waistband down to the hem. It’s only when jeans are cuffed that the selvedge detail is exposed. Jeans used to come at one long length, intended to be tailored. Not everyone would get their jeans hemmed, though. Instead, many wearers would turn the cuffs up to prevent them from dragging. The move eventually caught on as a stylistic choice, one that shows off the selvedge and continues today.

Selvedge is so sought after because it’s more expensive to produce. These types of fabrics are woven on are shuttle looms, which is an older style of machine used in textile production a century ago. These looms produce fabric at a much lower speed and are now less common than faster projectile looms. Selvedge is often associated with higher-quality — brands that invest in slower selvedge production may also invest in better materials and construction — thus adding legitimizing its higher price.

Raw denim’s popularity brought the selvedge detail to prominence and many brands began incorporating premium denims into their collections. Selvedge became so popular in the last decade that some brands even tried to imitate the look of selvedge with faux selvedge denim offered at suspiciously low price points.

You can often expect a pair of jeans above $150 to be made with selvedge denim. Just take a peek inside the legs and you’ll know. But brands like Gap and Uniqlo have managed to squeeze out quality selvedge denim for well under that price point. Whether you’re interested in selvedge for its history, function or aesthetics, it’s never been easier to get yourself into a pair of selvedge denim jeans.

Kicking off our gift guide to men’s hoodies in fine fashion we have this lightweight offering from the Amazon brand Goodthreads. Kangaroo pouch pockets and the iconic Under Armor emblem finish this hoodie off in style.

The North Face is a brand known for producing high quality outdoors garments and this half-dome pullover hoody is just another example of their expertise. It’s made with a cotton-polyester blend and features the obligatory kangaroo pouch pocket for your hands to rest in. The North Face logo is on full display across the chest. This, we must admit, is a bit more expensive than others, but as with anything from The North Face, it’s the quality you’re paying for more than just the brand itself.

Another reliably high-quality sports and casual wear clothes brand, Lacoste are responsible for this subtle, but exceptionally cool hoodie. Compared to others in our guide, Lacoste have opted for a more simplistic logo featuring the Lacoste croc embroidered onto the chest pocket.

If our choices have been too subtle for your tastes, then you’ll probably fall head over heels for the next option from Superdry. The Superdry Sport is loud, proud and sexy! It’s got the front kangaroo pocket, a drawstring hood, an attractive stripe detail along the sleeves, ribbed hem and cuff. Impeccably made, this most certainly is. Wait, did we mention that it also has the Superdry Sport logo emblazoned across the front. It’s slightly too big to fit in its entirety, so the ‘t’ is left on the back.

Specs

  • Material Cotton 76%, Polyester 24%

O’Neill, as you probably know, are popular among the surfing community for their surfboards and associated accessories and clothing. The Ringside Hydro Power hoodie is one that we came across while researching this guide and knew it was going to make the cut. Even if you’re one of those weird hydrophobias!

Oakley is a brand that make it clear they don’t create their products for just anyone – Oakley clothes are meant to be worn by the brave, by the people who deft ordinary style conventions. Is that you? If yes, you’ll love the F-14 Factory Pilot hoodie. Rather than being a pullover-style, this has a zip-up closure that provides you with a snugger fit. It zips all the way up and has a higher neckline that becomes part of the hoodie, with drawstrings that help to bring everything down around your head and face.

Specs

  • Material Cotton 76%, Polyester 24%
  • Style Zip-up
10

Neff Headwear started, unsurprisingly given the name, by producing stylish and trendy headgear including beanies and other hats. Since they moved into other areas too, they’ve brought that unique style and sophistication with them. Made from 100% high-quality cotton, we really love the coloring on this hoodie. What starts as a darker green gradually fades into a slightly different tone to give it a real worn and used feel. Pull this baby on and you’re good to go!

Specs

  • Material Cotton 100%
  • Style Pullover

If the lightweight numbers we’ve featured so far aren’t quite what you need, this midweight hoodie from Carhartt will give you a bit more substance for your money, without weighing you down. It’s made from a 10-5-ounce 50-50 blend of polyester and cotton, so there’s no question about its quality. Spandex has been used to good effect for extra stretch and flexibility in the ribbed waistband and cuffs, while the pouch-style pocket is large enough to fit your hands, unless you’re Hellboy, of course! To give it a more striking look than the average hoodie, the Carhartt name logo is featured on the sleeve while the simple the simple and small insignia is on the pocket.

  • Style Pullover
13

The second hoodie in our guide from Goodthreads is this awesome zipper-style item that has a very classic look and feel that’ll go with just about any clothes you pair it with. To break up the amount of cotton-polyester used in this, there’s some nice metallic detailing in the slots in the hood where the adjustable drawstring has been inserted and the slick and subtle pouch is a great place to keep your hands warm when the temperature is not on your side. The whole thing, in fact, has been built for comfort, as the elasticated cuffs help to keep the heat in your arms and prevent the cool air slipping up them.

Specs

  • Material Cotton 90%. Polyester 10%
  • Style Zip-up
14

We love the way the raglan-style sleeves look on this next hoodie. That is, they’re made in one piece that continues up the length of the sweater to the neckline. It helps to give an attractive profile and makes for a comfortable wear when on. Rukah, that’s right dude, that’s how it’s pronounced, have clearly put a lot of effort into making this look as different as possible from the vast array of hoodies that all look the same out there. As it’s a pullover-style garment, there’s no fuss when you need to put it on and the attractive, yet small enough that it’s incredibly subtle RVCA logo gives elevates it from being too plain.

Specs

  • Material Polyester 90%, Cotton 10%
  • Style Pullover
15

Another big name in the surfing community, Hurley are known for producing finely designed and appealing garments. Just look at the Surf Check hoodie we’ve highlighted here! In stark contrast to others in our guide, rather than having a full zipper closure, the brand has opted for the cool and relaxed half-zip. While that means that it’s a pullover posing as a zip-up hoodie, we love that the zip runs up from the chest all the way up to the neck line. The soft fleece is very comfortable and side side-seam pockets, your hands can rest in cozy little caves on those chilly mornings when you’re taking a breather after running. Even if it’s just for the train or bus!

Specs

  • Material Cotton 80%, Polyester 20%
  • Style Half-Zip
16

Adidas are a high-class sportswear brand that need no real formal introduction. The quality and style speak for themselves. Look at that picture and try to tell us you don’t want to unzip it right now and slip it on. Don’t dare lie. We can see through your lies. Made from an appealingly soft cotton-blend, this is a trendy hoodie with a green-edge. The cotton is blended with not just any polyester, but recycled polyester. So, you can slip this beauty on and have the higher ground, while still looking like the coolest dude on the block! Adidas have taken their signature stripes and features them along the sleeves for a dramatically cool look that elevates this above most hoodies.

What are the first words that come to your head when you think of the brand Timberland? Rugged, robust and durable? That’s something we’re sure to all agree upon. Those words were clearly in the brief when the geniuses in their design and manufacturing teams were tasked with creating this awesome hoodie. With a regular-fit and soft fleece-knit, this will give you the comfort and confidence to conquer the weekend in style. 18

Another cool hoodie in our guide with a conscience is this from Alternative Apparel, who are widely-known for their sustainable approach to clothing. While incorporating recycled and organic fabrics and materials where possible. They’re also all about achieving that lived-in, worn look. You know the one that normally takes a few months or even years of solid wearing? Well, like much of their output, you just slip this zip-up hoodie on and hey presto, you’ve got that vintage look.

Specs

  • Material Polyester 50%, Cotton 38%, Rayon 12 %

Think of Van Heusen and you probably think of those drop-dead gorgeous dress shirts that only the coolest cucumbers wear. Van Heusen exudes style. If only Van Heusen could bottle his style and we could all become stylish without having to buy their hoodies. If only, if only. It’s a good job then that their hoodies, particularly this Never Tuck number, are as cool and sexy as their shirts. The fleece-knit top is made from 100% polyester and has a slim-fit to give you a sculpted and chiseled look. You won’t look like you’re on the way to Comic Con or the ice hockey game with this on, that’s for sure.

Specs

  • Material Polyester 100%
  • Style Pullover
20

Think many of the 19 hoodies above are all well and good but are not exactly designed for the outdoors? Maybe you’re right, buddy. That’s why we’ve featured this beast from The North Face. The Campshire may sound like a region across the pond that’s been converted into a campsite, but trust us, silly name aside, this has been designed with a distinct purpose. For starters, it’s made from 100% 300-weight, superbly-warm Sherpa fleece to give you maximum protection against the cold air. Rather than leave it to poxy drawstrings, they’ve equipped it with a half-zip closure that runs right up into the hood.

Specs

  • Material Polyester Sherpa Fleece 100%
  • Style Half-zip
21

Taking inspiration from motorcycle gear, the next GUESS hoodie in our guide is made from a French terry fabric consisting of rayon, polyester and cotton. This is a very subtly-designed top that is in no way shape or form plain, but it’s not as loud and obvious as some we’ve featured. GUESS have made sure that it has a tight neckline that provides ample protection for your body from the elements, without choking you and the hood itself is very accommodating. If you don’t really want to make a scene or announce your presence, you’d likely choose this one.

Specs

  • Material Cotton 54%, Polyester 36%, Rayon 10%
  • Style Pullover
22

If the one above was subtle and could be worn without announcing your presence, this one will tell everyone you’re coming from a mile or two away! Subtle it aint, ideal for stealth it isn’t. Well, not unless you want to disappear into the crowd of sports fans while attending an event. To its credit it though, it doesn’t do anything by halves and is extremely lightweight, while being extremely comfortable too. Ideal for working out in, as there’s plenty of pocket space to keep your important, must-have-on-you-at-all times. The stripes and colorful logo have been embroidered on. So, don’t buy this unless you’re happy with everyone knowing you have taste!

Specs

  • Material Cotton 80%, Polyester 20%
  • Style Zip-up
23

Surely, we don’t need to tell you fine folks reading this that Polo Ralph Lauren being involved in a hoodie like this is a good, good thing? This really is a hoodie that knows it’s awesome but doesn’t feel like it must shout it from the rooftops. It’s like one of those suave guys, like James Bond, that just walks in and you know everyone knows, he’s the Man. That’s right, with a capital M. The streamlined kangaroo pouch pockets, the ribbed trim and cuffs, the full zipper closure. Everything, even the poly-cotton mix used, is all about comfort, sure, but style and swagger too. Polo Ralph Lauren have even tried to keep a low profile here too by only using the simple chest pony badge.

Specs

  • Material Polyester 58%, Cotton 42%
  • Style Zip-up
24

Guys, ever want all the swagger of a denim jacket, without all that damn bulk weighing you down? This hot piece of faux-denim from Diesel will be your kettle of fish then! Fashioned from a top-range cotton and featuring a full zipper closure, this is the ultimate marriage of rugged masculinity with a soft center. Like having a rocky road choc with a creamy center, or something. If it was any more laid back it’d be horizontal! And with the Diesel branding, you know everything from the material to the cut and finish is going to be on another level!

Specs

  • Material Cotton 100%
  • Style Zip-up
25

How about something a bit retro? Sporty and retro, to be exact. That’s what you get with the Puma Classics T7 hoodie. This pullover-style sweater has a 100% cotton construction formed into a nice and luxurious fleece. It follows the T7 panel design and features a large plain white version of the iconic Puma logo and a stunning strike down the sleeves too. Finished with drawstring to help you adjust the neckline and hood to fit your head, this is just oozing in sports casual cool. Not that we’re saying you’ve got a big head!

Specs

  • Material Cotton 100%
  • Style Pullover

Another hoodie that’s a lot more like a jacket than your average sweater-style garment, the Gary Com has an 8.5-ounce Sherpa Fleece on the interior for a more sumptuous, breathable, warm and moisture-proof wear. It’s not without its rugged good looks either, and the adjustable drawstring for the hood and zipper closure that goes all the way up to the neckline, with that generous kangaroo pouch pocket, make this a hoodie-style jacket that was designed for outdoor life.

Specs

  • Material Cotton 55%, Polyester 45%
  • Style Zip-up
27

All-cotton construction is the name of the game with the next Oakley hoodie in our guide. The Block Color is a comfortable and stylish way to keep those chills at bay. With ribbing in the waistline and the cuffs, you know you have a tight, but not restrictive seal at the places where warmth escapes and in turn lets cold air in. The same can be said for the hood itself, as it has suitable protection in the form of the obligatory drawstring. The prominent, yet subtle Oakley badge front and center on the chest plate, with the stylish block of contrasting color running along underneath it, make this a rather aesthetically-pleasing garment, all in all.

Specs

  • Material Cotton 100%
  • Style Pullover
28

French Terry is an extremely common and popular fabric to use in hoodies, due to its quality and heat-retaining properties. The Voyage hoodie from HUF Worldwide is another fine example of this kind of material being put to great use. There’s ribbing on the wrist cuffs and along the waistline and there has also been ribbed inset panels used with detailing from flatlock stitching. While subtlety prevails on the chest with just a simple H insignia, the left-hand sleeve has HUF WORLDWIDE written along it. The smart, plain coloring of the hoodie is in stark contrast to the camo-style coloring of the hood itself.

Specs

  • Material Cotton 100%
  • Style Pullover
29

Fila has undergone a gradual and outstanding transformation over the last few decades into one of the world’s foremost producers of top-end sportswear. Innovation is always woven into their designs. As a result, the brand has had the privilege of working with many esteemed athletes. So, it’s unsurprising that Fila are known for their cosmopolitan style as well as practicality when it comes to designing fashionable items like this velour hoodie. This half-zip closure top has a very old-school look to it, with a pleasantly luxurious and contemporary feel. Put that cashmere sweater away and opt for this during the summer, guys!

On the back, the thee huge The North Face logo and box has the company tagline printed below it ‘Never Stop Exploring’. That’s pretty good advice for all of us, don’t you think?

Next on our list is the rather amazingly affordable warm and luxurious hoodie from Joe’s. The only surprising thing about Nike and one of their awesome hoodies coming in at number 40 in our gift guide is that they’ve not been featured sooner. Such is the quality showcased in this guide. What’s important though, is, was it worth the wait? We like to think it was. This is part of the Nike Heritage clothing range and features a very simplistic but suitably iconic design. A full zipper closure will keep you snug, with the help of the drawstring and that soft and comfortable hood. While the quiet and dope miniature Nike and tick logo on the left-hand chest brings it all together. Just do it, buy it!

Speaking of heritage and thinking of classic designs that are instantly recognizable to most people around the world. While speaking and thinking of these things, surely the name that pops into your head, or one of a few, is Calvin Klein. This trendy and very subdued design features a smart strip of fabric across the chest with Calvin Klein written. The slim fit helps to give you a better shape and although it can’t turn you from a large and cuddly into a sculpted Adonis, it does help. The elastic in the cuffs and waistline helps to give it enough versatility without allowing warmth to escape or allowing the bitter cold to enter.

The Classic Camo pullover has the classic Adidas Trefoil across the front and is made from plus and soft French Terry cotton that puts a lot of other hoodies to shame. Adidas have utilized all their experience and skills and the components and features you’d expect from a world-class hoodie – ribbed wrists and waistline and a drawstring cord that secures you within the hood.

If you’re wondering what that rather fetching and intriguing color is called, it’s currant. Doesn’t it make the retro-styling of the Santa Cruz logo really pop out? With a larger Santa Cruz logo on the back, this is an awesome everyday kinda hoodie. The idea behind this, like any of the other Pacific Wave Surf Shop Santa Cruz Classic Dot items is to really emulate the skate and surf culture that the area is famous for. So, whether you’re a fashionable skater or surfer or just someone who is caught up in just how awesome this gear is, this is a great garment for you.

Not Goodthreads this time, but another Amazon brand – Peak Velocity, that we must admit is rather cool. It sounds like it’s already been an outdoor apparel or extreme sports garments brand for 50 years or something. Aside from the slick name, we really like the athletic-fit and slim, body-hugging feel this hoodie has. The thermal waffle-knit polyester used helps to trap all that valuable warmth between your t-shirt or body and the hoodie. That’s without compromising the breathability and lightweight nature of the beast. The part we especially like about this hoodie though is the option to ‘build your own’ by choosing the best silhouette and size for you and your body.

Have you ever thought ‘wouldn’t it be cool if my hoodie had a little more wool content?’ If so, you’ve chose the right Men’s Gear gift guide to browse through today. The SmartWool hoodie you’re looking at right now has a Merino-nylon blend and as you’d imagine, is wonderfully warm and cozy. What would you expect from a product made by a company that started life on cold and tough ski slope in Colorado? A simple belief that toes don’t have to be cold spurred it along. That was 20-years ago and what started as just socks, moved into other garments like hoodies. Merino wool has several great properties – it’s warm, resistant to odors, wicks moisture and is breathable.

Back again in the safe and capable hands of HUF Warehouse and this more simplistic approach to half-zip hoodies – the Relay in French Terry fabric made from 100%. Rather than having the name in unmissable fashion along the sleeve, this has a quieter appeal. A simple white trim along the ribbed hemline and cuffs and the HUF logo on the left. The great thing we love, like many other so-called half or quarter-zip hoodies is that while you get the fuss-free of the open-top pullover design, you also adjustability from the zipper in the half that does need or doesn’t need to be closed up for winter or down for summer.

Another killer entry into our guide from Hurley is this pullover hoodie. Made from 100% fine polyester, it’s got the usual components and features – ribbed cuffs and hemline. But what do most enjoy doing more than anything else – is the incorporation of Dri-fit tech into the hoodie. Why does it need that? Because pigeons! Ask a silly question, get a silly answer. The Dri-fit tech is ingenious and if you invest in this great item, you’ll experience for yourself its ability to ensure your safety and just how wet you are!

Bella + Canvas is all about being different. With this funky pullover hoodie, now’s your chance to do something different. There may not be much different about this piece of clothing on the surface, however when you consider the fact it has been made with both ring spun and combed cotton-polyester blend it’s easier to understand that it has a unique feel to it. Even if being different means choosing one in that peachy almost pinky color. Go for it!

The Adidas Equipment line of garments was released by the German sportswear brand back in the good old 90s, when there was a boon in running culture across the world. This contemporary-design hoodie should be an evolution of the look that first began during that iconic decade with a modern twist for the youth. The double-knit fabric made of a combination of polyester and cotton, gives the pullover-style hoodie an additional layer of comfort. While the retrospective color-blocking on the arms in a take on the Trifold that Adidas are famous for, gives it a nice edge.

The second Volcom hoodie in our guide is this cutting-edge design with a color blocking that only Volcom would be responsible for. Subtle and yet dramatic enough to make this a must-have addition to your wardrobe. The sweater is finished by specially branded metal trimmings, a handy adjustable drawstring as standard and a large frontal pouch-style pocket.

Adidas have appeared a few times in this guide and it’s not surprising, because with so many different comfortable and stylish hoodies to choose from, we had to feature more than one. The one we’re looking at right now is the Adidas originals Authentics hoodie which has the classic three strips running along the sleeves and then across the width of them further down and closer to the cuffs. Other than that bit of dramatic styling, this is a plain and classically-smart casual affair with the simple trifold emblem on the top left corner of the hoodie’s chest.

The hardest thing about making this gift guide for you, was that we came across so many different hoodies that we’d happily add to our own wardrobes. There’s several on our personal wish lists just waiting to be bought, to be perfectly honest with you. Including this one from the less-well-known Falcon Bay brand. Designed to fit taller and wider gents, this still manages to exude the kinda coolness you’d expect that only came from Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds or Jake Gyllenhaal. A nice addition to it is the two-way zipper closure for extra warmth and the soft brushed fleece on the interior that contrasts the smoother look on the outside. The utility pocket along with pouch is great.

J. Crew is one fashion label that are known for producing timeless classic versions of everyday essentials, including hoodies. This relaxed and laidback cool design fits in with the J. Crew ethos perfectly and will give you the confidence to rock up anywhere with that little bit of esteem-driven swagger. Although most in our guide have been either zip-up, pullover or quarter/half-zip-ups, this hoodie is different still with its pullover and half-button-up closure. The buttons are a great alternative to the zipper as they’re less likely to catch on the material and last a lot longer. It also tends to feel securer when your hoodie is fastened shut.

  • Material Cotton 60%, Polyester 40%
  • Style Pullover, quarter-button-up

Finishing out our gift guide to men’s hoodies in style is this charming piece from Fox. The two-tone look with the darker hue sleeves and lighter hued front and back paneling make this an ideal smart casual addition to your everyday gear. The raglan-style sleeves are one complete piece of finished fabric that run all the way up to the neckline for a more fitted-feel. While there’s a little bit of additional style and focal point of interest in the form of the rather subtle but still cool Fox head logo.

Hood Up and Roll Out!

Well, that’s us reached the end of our gift guide to what’s great and good in the world of men’s hoodies. We hope you’ve enjoyed it even a fraction of the amount we enjoyed putting it together. Perfect for those early morning jobs or for those early morning lay around and wait for your alarm to go off before getting your ass into the shower and off to work. Ideal for working out when you do eventually have the motivation to do so. And perfect for wearing to work on dress-down Friday’s when you want to look cool AF. Though don’t overdo it, if you’re the boss. Don’t Michael Scott it and rap, unless you do have rhyming skills and know how to spit fire and have got some bars.

Whether you choose a zip-up, pullover or somewhere in between, is entirely up to you. We were unable to figure out whether one was better than the other, so have decided it’s really a personal preference thing. Sorry, we can point out the 61 hoodies we think you should consider, we can highlight top picks, but we can’t do the whole flipping job for you. We’re not your mom, dude.

These New Western Boots Are Surprisingly Affordable

Rhodes is known for its range of quintessential, accessibly-priced boots and shoes. The newest addition to its lineup — the Roper Boot — compliments the brand’s already-solid mix of Chelsea boots, chukka boots and lace-up styles. Like the other boots, the Roper Boot is quite affordable (just $210), and it doesn’t skimp on materials or construction.

Western boots typically come in two variations: traditional cowboy boots that feature a riding heel (taller and angled), and roper boots that have a shorter heel, designed to handle a day of walking. The Rhodes Roper Boot has that shorter block heel, capped with rubber for added traction and ease of repair.

The Roper Boot is made in León, Mexico with full-grain, waxy cowhide from Le Farc tannery and comes in both Hickory and burnished Tobacco colors. The boot design is unadorned — the simple silhouette and handsome leather are front and center. Inside, the style is lined with pigskin and it includes a non-slip leather heel insert for added comfort out of the box. And, the leather sole is secured to the upper with Blake stitching, so it can be rebuilt after years of use.

rhodes roper boot
The Roper Boot ($210) has a noticeably narrow shaft that will easily fit under tapered jeans.

Huckberry

Unlike other Western boots at this price, the Roper Boot has a noticeably narrow shaft — watch out if you’re between sizes — that will easily fit under modern pant silhouettes, whether straight, tapered or slim. The boot is designed to fit a bit snug on the first wear, but the leather will soften and stretch over time. If you are in between sizes, or have wider feet, the brand recommends sizing up.

For the price, it’s hard to argue with the classic style and quality construction offered by the Rhodes Roper Boot. It’s a great value and will immediately compliment your existing wardrobe. If you’re looking for a no-nonsense Western boot that won’t break the bank, these are certainly worth checking out.
