We sort fragrances into seasons because of what each of them evokes or conjures. Scents play with our senses and tie directly into our memories to recall pivotal ideas — the warmth of a crackling fire in winter, or the uplifting expanse of the open sea during summer. And for those scents that play to spring, they typically nod to the increasingly longer days, the blossoming flowers, the freshness after an April shower.
What’s best about spring scents, too, is how perennial they tend to be. While a heavy woody or spicy fragrance might feel appropriate for winter, it is totally out of place on the warmer, sunnier half of the year. However, when you embrace winter by wearing green, fresh, crisp, floral notes (those characteristic to spring), it helps recall that sunnier, brighter half of the calendar and makes each day more optimistic.

On the one hand, we’re anxiously awaiting the late-March launch of Escentric Molecules latest three scents — all of them spring-tinged spins on their fan-favorite Molecule 01 scent. But on the other hand, their ‘Escentric 05’ scent was a highlight of 2020 launches, and deserves the fanfare here. It’s anchored with cashmeran — reminiscent of cashmere wool — but still favors spring wear thanks to lots of citrus, floral, and herbal notes (think bergamot, orange, rosemary and basil). It’s a little sweet and woody too, with fig and cypress making themselves known. While EM rightfully enjoys a cult-like fandom for its simple, playful and sciencey scents, Escentric 05 is a more rounded, mainstream and playful showcase of the brand’s chemistry skills.

This launch is big news for fragrance enthusiasts because H24 is Hermès’ first men’s pillar fragrance in 15 years (which is when it launched the iconic Terre d’Hermès, ahead of numerous delicious spinoffs). H24, however, is a fresher, greener pillar than the spicy and woody Terre d’Hermès. It combines clary sage, narcissus flower, rosewood, and the curious sclarene (which delivers a bit of a metallic and fresh quality to the fragrance. The bottle is refillable too, so if you love it as much as us, you can top it off while respecting the environment — as anything more springy than being eco-friendly?

There are a billion scents that center themselves on the Italian coast, as if it’s the only place that recalls the citrusy-sweet notes of lemon, bergamot, mandarin and orange. It squeezes the aforementioned citrus fruits into a bottle with notes of neroli, cardamon, vetiver, musk and more. Perhaps you graduated into shaving by learning a single method — I’m guessing the cartridge razor shave — and have stuck with it ever since. Or perhaps you got fed up with it fast and have stuck with a beard or some degree of facial hair, only now you’re curious to shave it all off again.
There is more than one option for shaving. And while all four core methods deliver a close, safe shave — especially since innovation has perfected each method — there are some nuances that make a big difference to some shavers. Honestly, while cartridge razors are probably the most commonly used blade at this point — and the most unisex and full-body one, too — they don’t offer that many benefits over the next method, safety razors, besides their ease of use.

Safety razors pretty much kick cartridge booty when it comes to quality of shave, fewer irritations/ingrowns, and cost. They’re not that hard to navigate — kind of like learning how to drive manual rather than automatic (wherein cartridges are automatic).

Among enthusiasts and traditionalists, safety razors are the agreed-upon superior blade, for their low cost per blade, low waste, and their ability to shave closely with fewer nicks, cuts and ingrowns.

The biggest difference between these two types of safety razors is, foremost, the number of razor edges you use (no shock there); the double edge exposes both sides of the razor for double the sharpness in a single shave. As such, it often has a rounded head that helps dictate the proper shaving angle, as you rest the head against your skin. The single edge will often have a weightier base that helps guide its strokes. They’re cheap enough that you can usually afford to toss the blades after each use; this way, storage isn’t of main concern, either. But you can reuse blades 1-2 times if you shave frequently enough, and store the rinsed razor upright in a cool, dry place. Don’t use anything older or duller than a couple shaves (or a week or two after use), otherwise, you’ll negate the blade’s best benefit of a close, healthy shave.

The two types of electric shaving heads are both effective at their job, but they cater to different kinds of shavers. Rotary heads — rounded, usually in a triangular or quadrant layout — are better for guys with thicker hair, and who may not shave as frequently, and whose hair runs in all different directions. The rotary tends to be the better “blind shave” of the two; it tackles pretty much everything without you needing to pay much attention.
Lots of rinsing — even with the shaver turned on and the head removed. Flush out those hairs, let the device dry completely between uses, and oil it up periodically to keep it working efficiently.

There’s a lot of pressure on your feet — literally and figuratively — to keep you upright and active. Those two take a beating day in and day out, especially if you lead an active lifestyle. But sadly, they can’t take care of themselves as well as they take care of you. Your feet need some proactivity from you in order to stay smooth, soothed, odorless and strong.
From cracked heels to calluses, from poorly trimmed toenails to bacteria-causing odor, there are a lot of maladies barking at the door of your feet. And the best way to prevent them from barking — and to start the year on the literal and figurative right feet — is to heed the following foot care tips.
As your feet take a beating, they develop calluses, rough patches, and cracks, from the heels up to the toes. And just as you would exfoliate your face and body in order to have your healthiest, freshest skin at the surface, you also need to exfoliate your feet. One way to do this routinely — especially if you’re prone to cracks, calluses, etc. — is an automatic callus grinder. I like these way better than the manual scrubbing removers because they don’t lead to any tugging or sudden tearage. Instead, the little wheel just whirs over top your cracks and calluses, and sands everything down to a smooth finish. (You can see the dead skin turning into dust as it takes to the air. But it’s equally satisfying as it is gross.)
You just have to be careful not to expose it to healthy (or broken) skin, though it won’t hurt if you accidentally touch your good skin with it. Do this every few days if you’re working down a callus, or every week if you’re simply maintaining smooth feet and tending to the latest cracks and rough patches. I prefer dry use since it keeps everything still. Follow with a shower, then a targeted callus cream or softening foot lotion.

Gnarly toenails are a surefire sign of a fungal infection, while poorly and overly trimmed toenails lead to a painful ingrown nail — which is as much of a pain to have removed. So, heed this simple advice: Always trim toenails with a straight-across clipper, as opposed to rounded ones which are designed for the fingers. Leave a sliver or two of white at the top, and consider using a nail filer to soften any inconsistent or uneven trim jobs.
Just don’t over trim, despite all temptations. The toenail is a tiny shield for your toenail, and you wouldn’t want to compromise its defenses — or your own personal comfort. (Overtrimming is the fastest way to the ER, too — for an ingrown removal surgery.)

While lotioning your feet nightly might seem like a difficult habit to build, it’s certainly an easy one to do 2-3 times a week. The trick to remembering is to have a pair of socks nearby when you apply, or to already be in bed when you apply the lotion (then to tuck them away inside the socks, too). This ensures that you don’t leave grimey footprints around the house, or lose any product as you march to bed.
And by doing this before bed, you allow the lotion — ideally packed with smoothing urea/uric acid (for cracks and calluses) or antifungal and antimicrobial ingredients like tea tree oil — to soak into your skin and work with your body’s cellular turnover while you slumber. It’s the fastest way to having and maintaining smooth feet. You can alternatively use an arnica-packed cream to help soothe and comfort tired, achy feet.
