Hermès and Rolls-Royce craft the bespoke Phantom Oribe for a Japanese billionaire

Rolls-Royce is already a notably exclusive label, but it will never stop those who want to take that distinction one or several notches higher. A Japanese entrepreneur and art collector, Yusaku Maezawa, is thinking along those lines when he expressed his desire to own a one-off automotive showpiece. The Luxury automaker gladly obliges the billionaire with the help of Hermès to craft the Phantom Oribe.

Roll-Royce Bespoke lead designer Michael Bryden shares his opinion regarding this extravagant project. He said: “Phantom Oribe is a fusion of East and West, ancient and modern, serenity and exhilaration. It is always a pleasure when a client brings us a bold, clear, and imaginative vision. There is a great thrill in seeing it realised so perfectly.”

For those who might be wondering about its namesake, Rolls-Royce is drawing upon a traditional Japanese style of pottery. It does so by way of the two-tone coat that mimics the visual profile one can see on the ceramics we indicated earlier. This adds a timeless aesthetic the owner will love since he also collects Oribe pieces.

They’re calling it MZ Oribe Green and cream which surprisingly looks stunning on the upscale sedan. Teams from Hermès and Rolls-Royce are sharing their talents to handcraft the sophisticated interior. Images of the cabin show a beautiful combination of Enea Green leather with the French fashion house’s “Toile H” canvas accents.

You will also see open-pore royal walnut wood panels with intricate cutouts for the speakers. Passengers can also admire the hand-painted gallery installation of Hermès’ iconic horse motif. According to Rolls-Royce, the theme of the Phantom Oribe matches Maezawa’s private aircraft. This reminds us that money can really make a man happy.

Tiffany & Co. Abandons the Band, Launches Men’s Engagement Rings

“Enter the men’s jewelry renaissance,” writes GQ staffer Samuel Hine in a piece bearing the same name. He argues, and we’d agree, jewelry is all over. No, it’s not a new thing by any means; men have long worn jewelry, it’s just that now the out-of-bounds lines seem eternally blurred. Men, as they should be, seem free to wear what they’d like: pearl necklaces, hoop earrings, bulky, braided bracelets, and now, a la Tiffany & Co.’s new men’s collection, diamond-clad engagement rings.

Tiffany’s first five diamond engagement rings designed for men — called the Charles Tiffany Setting Collection — are set to debut this month at the LVMH-owned label’s flagship stores. (They’re already available online, but orders must go through the company’s central customer service team.) The name derives from its founder’s ingenious 1886 invention, the first-ever women’s solitaire diamond engagement ring (aka the Tiffany Setting). 135 years later, the jeweler announces the all-new line rooted in “love and inclusivity.” It’s, according to a release, an attempt at “paving the way for new traditions to celebrate our unique love stories and honor our most cherished commitments to one another.”

Whether to cater to the interests of same-sex and non-binary couples or to appease the growing number of men interested in wearable adornments, this is surely a first and smaller makers are bound to follow. Could we see a consensus shift from simpler bands to more extravagant statement pieces? Probably not. Will more men entertain the idea? Absolutely.

All six iterations boast a diamond set in the center. Available options are the round brilliant and emerald-cut in up to five carats. On the former, the diamond is offset by a streamlined knife-edge band. For the latter, it’s situated on a band with beveled edges. A certificate detailing the diamond’s origin, place of cut and polish, grade and quality assurance will be available at purchase. Pricing, which varies depending on cut, size and carat, begins at $19,000 and rises as high as $300,000.

Masks Aren’t (Always) Needed Outside. Here’s How to Still Keep Yours Handy

Official as of April 27, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now states fully vaccinated people can forgo masks outdoors unless in a crowded environment like concerts or sporting events. That being said, they’re still recommended for indoor settings such as restaurants and bars or when visiting with unvaccinated people. (And in situations wherein you interact with others as availability and accessibility may slow the vaccine supply.)

That makes things tricky. Yes, most of us have mastered, or made a stab at, letting the mask hang from one ear or wrap around the chin, but these aren’t the most ideal ways to carry it with you; placing it in a pocket alongside keys or a phone (two high-touch items) or at the bottom of a bag is not necessarily sanitary; holding it in hand dampens dexterity. So, let’s clear the air: mask chains are the move. They’re stylish, offer a hands-free way to keep your mask handy and double as a sunglass chain.

New York-based smokewear brand Sundae School makes a jade-colored ceramic mask chain. Lobster claws help with the attachment process, ensuring your mask won’t suddenly disappear. A smiley charm adds an optimistic touch. Their iteration is available in blue and pink marble, too.

$24.00

Like socks, masks sometimes slip into the abyss never to be seen again. 8 Other Reasons’ two-pack solves this problem — or, at the very least, gives you time to re-up once one’s gone missing. The brand includes both a resin acrylic (in tortoiseshell or black) and a 14k-gold plated chain of two slightly different lengths; 29 and 28 inches, respectively.

Electric Picks Gold Twist Mask Chain

$98.00

Electric Picks’ iteration proves most versatile. The 14-karat gold plated chain can carry masks or sunglasses, but it also doubles as a necklace should you clasp the two lobster claws together. Measuring out to 24 inches long, it may be a bit long for some, but remember, it’s primarily meant to keep the mask removed from tightly around your neck.

J.Crew’s pearl chain is the most opulent pick on this list, but it costs under $25. These aren’t real pearls but rather glass beads dipped into a pearlescent coating. As such, don’t be afraid to ding, drop or risk losing yours.

Corridor’s New Collection Covers All of Your Summer Essentials

It’s time to get ready for some warm weather — and some warm weather apparel to go along with it. Case in point: New York-based independent clothier Corridor has just debuted its Spring/Summer 2021 Collection, and we’re all about it.

Designer Dan Snyder draws influence from several sources, citing pastel-ladened prep, the stylish downtown crowd and western, workwear and military styles. The mix might sound like a lot, but it’s an ideal recipe that results in clothing cut the correct ways in an array of colors.

As the brand has grown into three solo brick-and-mortar stores (Manhattan, Brooklyn, LA) and over 100 retailers, they’ve also expanded their offerings to include bags, belts, hats, scarves and beanies, classic tees, hand-crocheted cardigans and hand-painted shirts, sun-kissed coats and more. The newest collection boasts many of the aforementioned—no beanies in here, obviously—and all, we think, are worthy of a spot inside your closet.

Linen shirts layer well in early spring and offer relief from the scorching sun during the height of summer. Dusty Rose Broken Twill Military Jacket

$225.00

The Best Vitamin C Serums for Brighter and Clearer Skin

In terms of skincare and good-for-you ingredients, vitamin C is finally getting its time in the sun. When applied topically, vitamin C provides a host of benefits to your face:

  1. It can make your skin brighter (‘brighter’ meaning less dull or discolored, including dark circles under the eyes)
  2. It can even out your complexion and reduce/prevent hyperpigmentation
  3. It can reduce inflammation
  4. It stimulates collagen production in the skin, making skin more firm—to prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and the likes. This can also help prevent sagging skin around the eyes, which in turn prevents those dreaded under-eye ‘bags’ that result from the sagging
  5. Per the previous benefit, Vitamin C also speeds up wound recovery. Take note if you’re constantly popping pimples and anxious for them to heal faster.
    1. There are even more benefits, but these are the main ones. Vitamin C is best absorbed through a dedicated serum, too, given that the ingredient is fairly unstable in long-list formulas. (In this case, ‘unstable’ in that it oxidizes or becomes neutralized easily, rendering it far less effective.) So, it’s best to buy it in an opaque or dark vessel and to keep it in a cool, temperature-controlled setting.

There are a lot of contradictory opinions on whether it’s more effective to apply it in the morning or evening (or both), so let’s leave it at this: Apply it to freshly cleansed skin, and let the serum absorb fully (give it a cool 5-10 minutes, even though it should be somewhat instant). Then, follow with a moisturizer or night cream, ideally without retinol, AHAs/BHAs, niacinamide, or benzoyl peroxide. (If you frequently use these ingredients, it’s probably in the evening, since they’re all most effective when paired with a regenerative sleep cycle. In this instance, it would be best to use Vitamin C serums in the daytime.

Lastly, vitamin C is fairly gentle and works well with all skin types. You should still do a spot test prior to full use, but know that it’s likely to agree with your skin.

And it’s also best to buy one of the vitamin C serums below, but only because I’ve tested so many, and they’re among my favorites.

Best Overall Vitamin C Serum: Youth to the People 15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Energy Serum

      Courtesy

15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Energy Serum

      Youth to the People sephora.co,

      $68.00

Youth to the People takes a two-pronged approach with this formula, targeting both the overall face and the area around one’s eyes. (Many brands will separate these into two categories, wherein it makes perfect sense for one serum to target both.) A 15% vitamin C formula packs on the skin-brightening and firming benefits, while caffeine further stimulates circulation to wake up tired, darkened under eyes. If you nix your daily eye cream and rightfully consider this a 2-in-1 serum, it’s kind of a steal!

Best Upgrade Vitamin C Serum: SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum, $166

      Courtesy

      C E Ferulic

      SkinCeuticals dermstore.com

      $166.00

This is more or less the holy grail of vitamin C serums. (“Ask anyone,” I’m saying in my Dakota Johnson voice.) It gets its vitamin C from that top-shelf pure L-Ascorbic Acid, paired with antioxidant/antiaging superhero Vitamin E. The ferulic acid assures that these two ingredients stay balanced and don’t lose their potency, either — so that the serum is as strong on Day 60 as it is on Day 1.

Best Budget Vitamin C Serum: Yeouth Vitamin C and E Serum with Hyaluronic Acid, $16

      Courtesy

Vitamin C and E Day Serum with Hyaluronic Acid

      Yeouth amazon.com

      $15.95

Funny that two of our top three brands play with the word “youth” in their names, and it’s no accident: Yeouth’s C+E serum is a terrific entry-level to the world of brightening and toning your skin with this ingredient (while also getting a punch of that toxin-thwarting vitamin E). Even better yet, it’s got moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid, so it helps skin absorb hydration and stay plump. (And all for just $16!)

      Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster, $49

      Courtesy

      Boost C15 Super Booster

      Paula’s Choice amazon.com

      $49.00

When you see any serum marketed as a “booster”, it’s intended to be added to another skincare product — like a moisturizer — to ‘boost’ the product’s offering. (So, let’s say you love your moisturizer but also wish it had hyaluronic acid. You might find an HA booster and then add it to your moisturizer, though it’s best done with a little research as to how much you should include in order to keep it effective.)

I say all that to finally arrive at this conclusion: While this serum is marketed as a booster, you should use it as a standalone product. It is outstanding as such, and has a similar 15% vitamin C and vitamin E and Ferulic formula as the aforementioned SkinCeuticals (plus hyaluronic acid, like the aforementioned Yeouth serum). When you ‘boost’ a product with vitamin C, you run the risk of neutralizing the vitamin C, given its instability as an ingredient. So don’t bother with the boost, and use it as the terrific serum it is!

      Obagi Professional-C Serum 20%, $133

      Courtesy

      System Professional-C 20% Vitamin C Serum

      Obagi dermstore.com

      $133.00

This is your highly concentrated, 20% L-Ascorbic acid dose of vitamin C, for when you really need a fix in your regimen. Obagi added hyaluronic acid to its potent formula too, to pair with the vitamin C for a skin-plumping, collagen-boosting, dewy-glowy result.

The UNDONE x Simple Union: 無3 reflects Wabi-Sabi with the Sometsuke and Urushi

Just a little over a month ago, we featured products from a rekindled partnership between a Hong Kong-based fashion house and watchmaker. That was the UNDONE LAB + Simple Union collection of accessories. What we didn’t know that it was just a teaser that leads up to another exciting tie-in. Hence, the latest to come from this collaboration are two classy wristwatches; The UNDONE x Simple Union: Sometsuke and UNDONE Urushi.

    UNDONE x Simple Union: 無3

One look at the unique visuals each brings to the table reminds us of the label’s previous work. The 無2(MŪ2), gave us a wonderful overview of how imperfections can highlight the beauty of an object or even a person in some cases. Moreover, this is what the Japanese refer to as the philosophy behind Wabi-Sabi.

With all 300 examples of the aforementioned limited-edition timepiece selling out in less than two days, it was only a matter of time before UNDONE revisited the concept. With Simple Union back in the saddle once more for this artistic endeavor, the Sometsuke and Urushi will likely be a hit, especially among those who loved the older ones.

    Two brands, one cohesive design

This is a wonderful opportunity for people who missed out on the first two. Still, you might be wondering exactly which should be your next purchase. Worry not, because we’re here to help.  Just note that the UNDONE x Simple Union: Sometsuke is the more exclusive one in this release at only 300 units allocated for production.

On the other hand, UNDONE is also offering the Urushi. This is an exceptional option for those who normally prefer darker colors to match their style. Although each model is visually different, both likewise share some essence of Wabi-Sabi in their design.

A tribute to the creativity of old

We have a duo of remarkable mechanical watches that tout a top-notch level of craftsmanship and artistry not many can pull off. For the curious and willing, we’re here to give you an overview of what makes these absolute must-haves.

Choosing between the Sometsuke and Urushi seems difficult, but we are here to help. So let’s find out which of the 無3(MŪ3) models will be the next one on your wrist.

With the Sometsuke headlining this pleasantly regular partnership between UNDONE and Simple Union, it’s only fitting that we start things off with this timepiece. As you can likely glean from the specifications, there are some elements that each share with the other.

What immediately grabs your focus here is the aesthetic choice for the dial. Living up to its name — “Sometsuke” — which refers to the traditional way of making porcelain that’s primarily in white with a variety of designs in blue.

To achieve the look of this type of pottery, UNDONE uses white enamel paint on the dial. What follows are the indices and cathedral hands in blue that recreate the signature classic look of vintage ceramics we mentioned earlier.

This continues with a line that starts just below the 4 o’clock hour marker and runs diagonally up to the left and ends with a crack at the 9 o’clock section. This exposes the movement beneath which is in gold to represent the art of Kintsugi (金継ぎ).

It is meant to represent the Japanese method of mending broken porcelain using gold. Once again, you have to give it to UNDONE for artfully pulling this off on the Sometsuke. Enclosing it with a 316L stainless-steel tartaruga case and exhibition case back likewise gives it another layer of sophistication.

The partnership with Simple Union is visible with the Hong Kong-based fashion house’s emblem at 12 o’clock. Additionally, the intricate patterns of its 150-year-old Katazome fabric strap mean each of the 300 Sometsuke watches is truly one-of-a-kind.

The Sometsuke might be the poster boy for this new collection, but UNDONE is not about to downplay the elegance of the Urushi. While its limited-edition stablemate captures the lighter shades of the color spectrum, it goes for a darker tone that is further enhanced by the gold accents.

According to what the watchmaker shares, its namesake is taken from an ancient ritual performed by Japanese monks whereby they make tea out of the Urushi tree. It might sound like something ordinary except that the ingredients they use are as toxic as poison ivy.

This supposedly aids in the process of self-mummification called Sokushinbutsu (即身仏), which is done by a few devout Buddhist monks. Aside from the creepy history, the name Urushi also refers to lacquer sourced from the said tree.

UNDONE starts off with a black dial intended to represent the iconic Japanese lacquerware of the same color. It also infuses the art of Maki-e to decorate the glossy surface with specs of gold applied by a brush.

The theme continues as the Urushi boasts golden cathedral hands as well as indices that glitter against the inky black backdrop. These, along with the movement, sit within a 316L stainless-steel tartaruga case under sapphire crystals on both ends. Finally, it is paired with a brown Italian leather strap.

    Our Takeaway

Now that you are aware of the differences between the Sometsuke and Urushi, let’s talk about what they have in common. First off, we have that minimalist-yet-stylish 316 stainless-steel tartaruga case with a combination of satin and glossy surfaces. Next, is the fluted crown with the watchmaker’s “U” emblem at 3 o’clock. Finally, there are the enamel painted dials that emulate the appearance of porcelain and lacquerware respectively.

A dial that with a profound meaning

Of course, let’s not forget that each flaunts what UNDONE calls their Kyoto dial, which is a variation of the California dial. Instead of Roman numerals for the top half, the markers are instead replaced with four stylized Kanji characters. Furthermore, these embody the so-called Three Marks of Existence (三印法): 無, 常, 苦, 空.

Translated, they mean impermanence(無常), suffering(苦), and absence of self-nature(空). As you can see, the UNDONE x Simple Union: 無3 collection is definitely something else. Ultimately, if you have the budget, we highly recommend grabbing both the Sometsuke and Urushi so you can swap between the two anytime. Otherwise, go for the style that calls out to your soul.

The Best Body Groomers for an All-Over Trim

When hair grows out of pretty much every part of you, you’re not expected to just accept it as is. It’s great if you do think “eh whatever, let it grow,” but it’s also nice to consider exactly how you’d like to maintain all of that fuzz. Do you like the chest a little fluffy, and the back bare? Do you want to manicure your bush — or more importantly, does your partner want you to?

On top of all that, you need a trimmer for the task, and we’re not suggesting you put your beard trimmer, electric shaver, or hair clippers up for it. They’re designed for your head, in terms of ergonomics, and oftentimes those trimmers are too wide-toothed, low-powered, or overly powered for your more sensitive body parts… especially one area in particular.

If you’re going to do any grooming below the neck, then it’s worth investing in a device for any and all tasks. Considering all the different ways you’ll be customizing your hair, based on where it’s growing, how much it’s growing, and how dense it is (and it’s never uniform across the body, is it?), you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor. And the results won’t go unnoticed, either — especially by that person nearest you, or those people nearest you, if you’re feeling extra frisky, post shearing.

Given all the contours of the body, and the odd angles one must navigate to trim his entire person, ergonomics and design go a long way. I love the upright stature of Panasonic’s groomer and its V-shaped head that allows for snipping in all the nooks and crannies. I think it’s an extremely straightforward device: wet/dry use, three trimmer heads for various length preferences up to one-quarter of an inch (or remove them all for a bare shave, 0.08 in.), and it’s one of the easiest for trimming your own backside, too. It takes a while to get a full charge (8 hours for 40 minutes of shave time, to which is its only real detriment.

This one is an uncanny entry into the list, given its hair-tweezing powers. It’s a pick for the guys who want to be bare-chested, smooth-legged, dolphin-pitted, and so forth. You’ll have to ignore the gendered advertising (please always ignore gendered advertising), in order to see that this device can keep you smoother longer—at a slightly higher level of pain, of course. It’s basically a hair removal device, as opposed to a pure trimmer/shaver (though it trims and shaves as well). Its epilator head uses 40 tweezers to extract the hairs completely from the skin as if you’ve used a wax strip or a depilatory cream. Just follow its red-light sensor to note that you’re applying the right amount of pressure as you go, and you can enjoy “silky” smooth results for weeks, instead of stubbled results days later. Oh, and it even has a massage head to help boost circulation in the skin, and to expedite any necessary recovery from all that extraction.

    $59.99

Speaking of design (notice a pattern?), Remington’s got its own thing going with this palm-held trimmer, which transforms into a long-handled back shaver (rather, you attach said handle). I think it’s best suited for the chest and back, while some of the other trimmers master the tighter, more angled spaces. But its wide blade can make for an efficient trim, and it does so with wet/dry functionality, as well as five trimming guards for 0.2mm up to 12mm of length (just shy of a half-inch). It has a 40-minute life on a four-hour charge.

Philips Norelco has a thoughtfully designed device as well. This dual-ended trimmer/shaver allows you to manage body hair at five different hair settings (up to 7/16 in., plus the shaver end for a full shearing). It has wet/dry functionality, and its angular design at either end allows for you to have a steady grip on the task at hand. Also, it holds an 80-minute charge after only an hour of being plugged in.

    $69.99

Your jewels are precious, so don’t go trimming the balls and the bush without a device that is specifically tailored to do so. (Have you ever nicked your scrotum while trimming down there? It bloody hurts, literally.) Meridian’s groomer gives you just enough distance on the trimmer head to avoid any such mishaps, and even comes with two head guards for bushier results (up to 12mm, nearly half an inch). I’d say you can go ahead and use this to manicure your chest and body, too, but the reverse logic is not always safe. (The same way I would tell you to apply a facial moisturizer on the body, but never apply a body moisturizer to the face. Always graduate upwards with sensitive body parts.) Meridian’s hedge trimmer holds a 90-minute charge with its USB charger and has wet/dry functionality.

    Mangroomer Electric Back Shaver

    Mangroomer Ultimate Pro Back Shaver

    Mangroomer amazon.com

    $49.99

If you want a dedicated back trimmer, then Mangroomer is your guy. (I always think these brand names are so… well, you know. There’s one called BRO SHAVER, too… sigh.) Anyway, one thing this brand does get right is shaving your hirsute hind-side, which is never a simple task when you’re doing it solo. I like its 1.8-in. Width, which is large enough to mow fast but short enough to target specific patches and angles. It has a flexible trimmer and shaver heads (with a foil shaver head for a nick-free shave), a power-burst mode for tougher tasks, and a lock button so that you can keep it taut at whichever angle you require (not to mention, an extendable handle for extra length or torque). It’s an odd device, with an odd name, but, bro, it sure follows through.

LeBron James Spotted Wearing Something Stylish You Can Actually Afford

It’s not often that you see a celebrity — especially at LeBron James‘s level — wearing something most of us can afford. Yet last night, while hanging courtside during the Los Angeles Lakers v. Orlando Magic game, LeBron donned a discounted jacket by Macy’s private brand INC International Concepts.

The top, officially called the Abstract-Print Twill Jacket in Worldly Blue, was designed by UpscaleHype founder Allen Onyia as part of the retailer’s Icons of Style initiative, a ready-to-wear release comprising pieces by five Black designers: Zerina Akers, Ouigi Theodore, Misa Hylton, Aminah Abdul Jillil and Onyia. Each contributed to one of Macy’s in-house brands, and every piece is on sale now for 30 percent off (when using the code FRIEND).

“We are thrilled to celebrate Black excellence and amplify the voices and exceptional talent of five Black creatives,” Macy’s Fashion Office VP Durand Guion explains in a statement. “We’re using this moment to tell their stories and provide our fashion-devoted customers with exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces to help them express their personal style.”

The limited-edition jacket evokes the current tie-dye craze while remaining subdued enough for suit-and-tie scenarios. It’s structured, boasts a front zipper closure, two angled pockets and another chest one that zips shut, too. Pinks and reds swirl across the back while yellows and greens grace the collar. Cop the matching pants for a head-to-toe statement.

Normally $150, this jacket is now just $105. All sizes remain available as of this story’s publication, but that surely won’t last.

Stand Out This Season with This Limited Edition Timepiece

This time of year, many notable brands are releasing watches as a part of Watches and Wonders — a tradeshow of sorts for the watch industry. And while many of those watches are interesting and notable, few offer as unique a watch as DWISS. The DWISS M3 is a Swiss-made watch that makes use of “displaced hours.” For those not up on their watch terminology, that means the hours are displayed in the longer circumference of the dial, followed by the minutes inside that and seconds inside of that. It’s an incredibly unique timepiece, and one that would find a place in the collection of anyone who appreciates horology. To top it off, the M3 is powered by an ETA 2824-2 movement housed inside a 316L stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal and a water-resistance rating of 20 ATM. Initially only available to the 100 members of the club, now 500 pieces are being offered to non-club members. Secure yours below before they are gone.

Do Your Boots Have Speed Hooks? Here’s How They’re Meant to Be Used

Welcome to Further Details, a recurring column where we investigate what purpose an oft-overlooked product element actually serves. This week: those hooks at the top of your boots.

If you’re the proud owner of a pair of Red Wing Heritage Iron Rangers, Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots or perhaps a pair of Viberg Derby Boots, you’re familiar with speed hooks. Even if you don’t have any of those popular boots (I don’t!), you’ve likely seen speed hooks on a number of other lace-up stompers.

Instead of the usual metal eyelets most shoes are equipped with, speed hooks are metal hooks which make lacing, as the name implies, speedy. Rather than having to fuss about, threading each lace carefully through each eyelet, speed hooks allow the wearer to simply wrap the laces around each hook. They’re especially useful for tall boots that require a bit more time and dexterity to slip into and out of. If your boot of choice lacks these quick-fastening doodads, you might’ve resorted to skipping the top set of eyelets to wrap the laces around the ankle instead.

As speedy as they are, you’re probably not getting full horsepower out of them. Most people would take one lace in each hand and wrap them around the speed hooks, crisscrossing the laces and exchanging them from one hand to the other as they make their way up the boot. That’s fine if you also like the slow lane, but you can kick it into high gear by using just one hand. Yes, one hand.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Grab both laces with one hand, holding one lace between your ring and middle finger and the other lace between your middle finger and index finger. Pull the laces taut and pull them from side to side, weaving the laces around each speed hook. It’ll take some practice to get up to speed, but once you do, you’ll be shaving off valuable time from your morning routine.

How to Tailor Your Jeans to Fit You Perfectly

Unless you’re about to relay a mortgage payment for a pair of custom, bespoke jeans, finding the perfect-fitting pair can be, facetiously, the most fun one person can have during their one life to live. Statistically speaking, you’re likely one of the hundreds of millions of people suffering from poor-fitting jeans. But don’t worry, it’s not your body that’s the issue. You’re perfect just the way you are.

You can get jeans that fit you great off the rack. And with a little bit of tailoring, you can get them to fit you damn-near perfectly. Tailoring jeans, a hard-wearing garment meant for the masses, might sound excessive. But if you live in your jeans every day, even the smallest alterations can make a huge difference.

Altering your jeans isn’t the same as altering a pair of dress pants, though. It requires a bit more finesse and comes with more precautions for each operation. Here’s what you need to know.

    Preliminary Steps

Start with a pair of jeans that’s somewhat close to the fit you hope to achieve. Think of this process more like a haircut. You can always take more off, but you can’t really put any back on. So, make sure that the jeans are too big rather than too small.

Wash your jeans before heading to the tailor. Diehard never-wash denimheads might cringe, but washing and drying your jeans will get rid of shrinkage and help get you a more accurate fit when it comes time to visit your tailor.

    Those-Jeans-Do-Not-Fit-You-Get-Them-Tailored-Gear-Patrol-inline

    Hemming

Jeans that are too long will break up the style’s overall silhouette. The fabric can pool on top of your shoes and creating a bunched-up shape. Even worse, you’re more likely to step on jeans that are too long (and trip because of it).

Bring the shoes that you wear most often with your jeans to the tailor and wear them when the tailor is marking or pinning your jeans at the desired length. This will help you properly visualize the right length you’re after. While trying on the jeans with your tailor, don’t be afraid to ask them a few times to adjust the length before they finalize the measurement and err on the side of too long, just in case. That said, there are a few different ways to have your jeans hemmed.

    • Lockstitch:
    • This is the easiest, most common way a tailor will be able to hem your jeans. It’s a simple lockstitch that’s done with the most basic of sewing machines. This goes by different names including topstitched hem or simply “regular hem” — you should get this if you just want your jeans shorter, plain and simple.

    • Chainstitch:
    • If you’re a real denim head, a chainstitched hem is what you should get. Though jeans weren’t originally invented with this detail, they have been hemmed like this for long enough that it’s subtly part of a blue jean’s DNA. Not every tailor will be able to do this, so be sure to ask if they can do a chainstitch hem before agreeing. (Make sure you to specify a chainstich hem, not an original hem.)

    • Original hem:
    • An original hem is mostly used when jeans are already pre-faded. The tailor essentially cuts off the hem from the pre-faded jeans, shortens the leg to the appropriate length and reattaches the hem to the new length. This preserves the natural puckered fades of the jean which would otherwise be lost in a basic hem.

      Taper

Tapering jeans is the second most common jean alteration. When your jeans aren’t slim enough for your liking, a tailor can alter your jeans to fit as slim as you like. There are some precautions to note.

Tapering your jeans can really only be done below the crotch. Though it’s technically possible because, well, anything is possible, having your jeans slimmed above the crotch is more effort than it’s worth.

For selvedge-loving denimheads, make sure your tailor can taper your jeans from the inseam. Most tapering jobs are done on the outseam which will effectively alter the width of the selvedge. If you cuff your jeans, hoping to show off your insider knowledge that is your selvedge, you’ll also be showing off the fact that you went to a bad tailor. Getting it done right does come at a higher cost as most jean inseams are constructed with either overlocked stitching or felled seams, thus making them more difficult and laborious to undo and alter. Expect to pay more for this once you find the right tailor who can do the job.

      Waist

A great- (or decent-)fitting seat is often accompanied by a loose waist. You can find yourself constantly picking up your jeans throughout the day. If both the seat and waist fit too loosely, you’d likely be better off finding smaller pants. While a belt is a simple solution, having the waist taken in is a more elegant route.

It’s possible to have the waist taken in by a tailor, but this is more of a delicate procedure. Because jeans aren’t built with easily-altered seats and waists, there’s more room for error and even less room to let out. A good tailor will take in the waist at the back, directly in the center. This is a tricky operation since both the center seam and the belt loop sit at this point and it requires a surgical hand to undo and restitch them. If done correctly, the center back seam will look the same and the cut that the tailor has made at the waist band will be hidden by the belt loop. Be sure to ask if your tailor can take in the waist from the back and expect to pay around $50 depending on your tailor.

      Seat

The seat is the trickiest alteration to have done. If you can avoid this, do so. If you’ve searched high and low for jeans without finding one with a decently-fitting seat, be prepared to do even more searching for the right tailor to do the job.

    The Best Retinol Creams

Whenever somebody asks me what they can best do to prevent or reverse signs of aging, I give them one word: Retinol. Well, I also tell them to stop binge drinking, or to get more sleep, or to wear SPF every day. But they want the magic eraser instead. And fortunately, it more or less exists in retinol.

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that boosts collagen production in your skin, reduces the appearance of pores, prevents breakouts, improves circulation and nutrient delivery (resulting in healthier, stronger, brighter cells). It’s quite likely your dermatologist’s favorite ingredient, and can even come prescribed as tretinoin if you want a high-end, heavy-duty fix for your skin.

But retinol is a tricky topic, too. See, we use the word ‘retinol’ to describe what is actually a range of retinoids, and of those retinoids, only one of them is technically ‘retinol’. And retinol-retinal is on the stronger end of the retinoid spectrum (just shy of prescription-strength tretinoin). It’s like how we use the word ‘pomade’ to describe all hair products, but there is still one product that is technically just ‘pomade’. I digress…

Retinol comes with a host of warnings. Primarily, it can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so it’s recommended that you double down on SPF after use (and of course, only use retinol before bed, then wash it clean in the morning; doing this also ensures that the product syncs up with your body’s regenerative cycle, so you’ll maximize retinol’s benefits, too). You should speak with your board-certified dermatologist if this is your first time at the rodeo, to get his or her advice on how to approach and monitor use. And remember, you’re playing a long game: The stronger your product, the harder it can work (though stronger may not be better for everyone); even then, all retinol products need to be used for about 90 days before you see those firming-affirmative results, and you need to use them in perpetuity to maintain results.

Whew. And that’s only the gist of it. So without further delay, here are the best retinol creams, serums, oils, and even one alternative (for those too sensitive to retinoids).

Best Overall Retinol Cream: Sunday Riley A+ High-Dose Retinoid Serum

    Courtesy

    A High-Dose Retinoid Serum

    Sunday Riley dermstore.com

    $85.00

By blending 1% retinol and 5% retinoid esters (along with antioxidant-rich blue algae), Sunday Riley’s retinol serum is a cornerstone of a great “skin fitness” regimen. Use it two days on, two days off, to give skin cells the proper time to turnover and shine brightly between doses. The gentle serum utilizes botanical extracts too (like ginger and cactus), to calm, soothe, and nurture the skin while it takes a very polite, but necessary smackdown from the retinol as you sleep.

Best Upgrade Retinol Cream: 111Skin Celestial Black Diamond Retinol Oil

    Courtesy

    Celestial Black Diamond Retinol Oil

    111SKIN nordstrom.com

    $230.00

Aptly named ‘Celestial’, this oil contains 1% pure retinol and is a workhorse when it comes to cellular turnover. Apply a couple drops before bed, every 2-3 nights to start, and as the final step in your bedtime regimen. (It will absorb into the skin momentarily; don’t be put off by the fact that it’s oil-based.) And yes, it really does contain diamond power, since your face is going to shine like one when all is said and done. (Though, don’t forget, retinol is never done! You’ve got to maintain the routine to maintain the results.)

Best Affordable Retinol Cream: RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream

    Courtesy

Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream

    RoC amazon.com

    $19.99

    $16.00 (20% off)

This is always the entry-level product I tell people to get if they’re retinol curious and want to see what difference a few months of use can make. Now, imagine what a prescription or higher concentration can do for you if used correctly and safely. But still, RoC is so effective because it’s using retinol-retinol in its formula. (In short, this product has a lower concentration of a higher strength retinoid, and finds its efficacy therein.)

    Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol Treatment

    Courtesy

    1% Retinol Treatment

    Paula’s Choice amazon.com

    $58.00

This serum feels like the closest OTC replication of a prescription retinol, in that it’s a highly concentrated formula (1% pure retinol), that can be applied beneath or mixed in with your night cream application (only mix one pump with your cream’s nightly quantity). Think of it as a retinol booster for your favorite cream (if you aren’t willing to swap out that favorite), and as a skin-brightening and -firming solution thanks to the inclusion of Vitamin C and peptides.

    Drunk Elephant A-Passioni Retinol Cream

    Courtesy

    A-Passioni Retinol Cream

    Drunk Elephant sephora.com

    $28.00

Drunk Elephant is easily the brand my beauty and grooming circles buzz about most, particularly when it comes to this category. We’re all drunk on their retinol cream, a 1% retinol recipe that combines skin-plumping Vitamin F, complexion miracle worker niacinamide, like a billion nourishing oils and extracts (jojoba, olive, apricot kernel…), plus skin tightening peptides.

It’s smart to use a gentler retinol formula around the eyes, given the sensitivity of the region. But you still want a product that works hard to reduce fine lines and mask dark circles, given how prone the eye area is to these things. Enter VERO’s eye serum, which utilizes retinoids along with squalane for a severely powerful firming, toning, softening finish. I like using this one at bedtime, and a caffeine-packed, refrigerated eye cream/serum by day.

If you find that your skin is too sensitive to retinoids, or if you simply prefer an all-natural approach to anti-aging, then try bakuchiol. Pronounced like ‘buh-KOO-chiel’, and is derived from the babchi plant (whose herbs are used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine). It has similar complexion clearing, skin-firming benefits as retinol, minus any of the side effects. I especially love Herbivore’s bakuchiol jelly serum, which also utilizes polyhydroxy acids to exfoliate dead skin cells while it promotes turnover of new ones.

This Shoe Is the Perfect Combination of a Sneaker and Hiking Boot

    Talking Points:

    Danner Overlook

Some days call for a shoe that’s more durable than a sneaker but more practical than a hiking boot. Danner’s Overlook is the perfect solution for those days, with the comfort you love of a street shoe plus the stability you get from a boot. The tech-driven midsole is sturdier than your average sneakers so you don’t have to stop where the pavement ends. It’s highly functional, supremely comfortable and really good looking — you’ll find yourself reaching for these on most days.

    Highly Stable

The dual-density midsole is firmer around the edges for stability and softer in the middle for traction where you need it most.

    Ultra Comfort

Thanks to the Overlook’s breathable EnduroKnit upper, you will stay cool and dry running around the city in the summer heat. Plus, the water-repellent finish will handle any wet terrain you encounter when you escape the city and hit the trail.

    Reliable Grip

Triangle lugs on the outsole provide maximum surface contact for a solid grip on a variety of surfaces. You’ll have no problem finding your feet on rock, grass, dirt, concrete and whatever else your day might throw at you.

The Latest adidas Stan Smith Is Made With Mushroom Leather

There are plenty of legendary sneakers that have graced the pages of Cool Material over the years from the Chucks, Roshe Runs, Jack Purcells, Cortez and the like, but there’s a part of us that…

The post The Latest adidas Stan Smith Is Made With Mushroom Leather first appeared on Cool Material.

Converse Classic Chucks vs. Chuck 70s: Which Pair Should You Get?

The most influential sneaker of all time has to be the Converse Chuck Taylor. Since 1917, the canvas high-top sneaker ran from hoop to hoop on countless basketball courts and evolved along the way to become the staple shoe in everyone’s closet from your childhood best friend to Rihanna.

But as the classic sneaker evolved, Converse eventually took a look back and in 2013, released the Chuck 70, a revival of its Chuck Taylor sneaker from the late 1960s and 1970s. The 70s brought a chunkier look back with a taller sidewall and sculpted silhouette while also playing on its vintage looks with yellowish-tinted rubber, reminiscent of an aged vintage sneaker. Its handsome looks paired with the upgraded components helped solidify the Chuck 70 as a mainstay sneaker for the brand seven years on and has since seen collaborative iterations with a bevy of notable designers and celebrities including Brain Dead, Carhartt WIP, Dover Street Market and JW Anderson.

Other than aesthetics, what else is different? Is the $30 price jump worth it? And most importantly, which version is right for you?

Fabric: The canvas upper has a smooth hand and feels about as light as New Yorker tote bag.

    Classic-Chuck-vs-Chuck-70s-gear-patrol-Classic-Insole

Insole: This is the padding you’ve come to expect from a pair of Chuck Taylors. Enough cushion to get you through the day easily, but certainly not an orthopedic oasis.

    Classic-Chuck-vs-Chuck-70s-gear-patrol-70-Sole

Sole: Here, the sole material is flexible, but not flimsy. Next to the Chuck 70s, however, that becomes even more clear.

    Classic-Chuck-vs-Chuck-70s-gear-patrol-Classic-Laces

Hardware: The aglets at the laces and for ventilation are silver-toned and matte, but otherwise look identical to the alternative.
Laces: The laces are a true white to match the matte white rubber of the outsole and toe cap.

Fabric: The Chuck 70’s fabric is the first thing you notice before even putting on the shoes. The 12-ounce cotton canvas is beefier and more substantial. There’s also an extra layer of canvas stitched into the upper at either side of the vamp.

    Classic-Chuck-vs-Chuck-70s-gear-patrol-70-Insole

Insole: The insole feels more supportive and more spongey than the Classic Chuck. This is more evident at the balls of the foot.

    Classic-Chuck-vs-Chuck-70s-gear-patrol-Classic-Sole

Sole: While both soles look very similar, it feels as though the Chuck 70s are slightly grippier, despite having less-defined grooves than the Classics.

Hardware: The metal eyelets match the rubber. That is to say that the eyelets are also shiny, compared to the matte finish of the Classic Chuck.

    Classic-Chuck-vs-Chuck-70s-gear-patrol-70-Laces

Laces: It’s no surprise here that laces also feel like an upgrade. The laces are denser and thicker.

Silhouette: A major appeal for the Chuck 70 is its silhouette. The last for the retro contender gives the sneaker more shape and definition.

Which One Is Right for You?

Chuck Taylor All Star Core Hi

    Converse zappos.com

    $54.99

Chuck Taylor All Star: Go with the Classic Chuck if you like its shape over the Chuck 70 and you’d rather save $30. The uppers of the Classic Chuck have a smoother hand than its retro version, plus it’s more flexible to begin with. The Classics are also noticeably lighter overall, but, interestingly, the heel counter is significantly more stiff than the 70s. This should help keep the shoes’ shape over time.

Though the shiny varnish on the rubber of the 70s evokes a vintage feel, it isn’t the most attractive for people who favor a beat-up sneaker. The matte look of the Classic’s eyelets and rubber subdues its looks. If you’ve known and loved the Classic Chucks, you know the saying: if it ain’t broke.

Chuck Taylor All Star ’70 Hi

    Converse zappos.com

    $84.95

Chuck 70: That said, go with the 70s remake if you’re willing to pay a little extra for the upgraded experience. While the Classic Chuck’s uppers feel like a tote bag you’d get as a free gift, the Chuck 70’s canvas uppers feel more like a tote bag you’d have to pay for. That may read as a positive (and ways, it certainly is), it’s also just one of the reasons for the price jump. The 70s have more cushioning than the Classics, so if you need more support, these are also a better choice for you. And the higher rubber sidewall isn’t just for show. It adds more stability to the shoe.

As far as aesthetics are concerned, the 70s have a vintage appeal with a more substantial profile and cream-colored rubber foxing and cap toe.

The Eyes Turn White To Bloodshot Red in the Adidas Campus 80s South Park Towelie

If you’re a South Park fan, then you may want to get a pair of the Adidas Campus 80s South Park Towelie, inspired by the genetically engineered government spy Towelie. The sneakers have the character’s likeness covered from the colors to the cartoonist eye illustrations.

This homage to one of the show’s cooked characters comes with a purple terrycloth upper with white leather overlays and purple leather lining. It even has Towelie’s eyes on the tongue. In tribute to the cannabis-consuming character, the eyes turn from all-white to bloodshot red in seconds when hit with UV light.

Of course, it’s not Towelie-inspired without somewhere to hide a pack or two of its favorite “snack” (if you know what I mean). In the tongue hides a stash that’s big enough to fit the Towelie keychains that came with the shoes. You can fit in anything you want or take inspiration from Towelie himself.

Moreover, the pair comes with some of the character’s memorable quotes imprinted on the tongue. These include “I Have No Idea What’s Going On” and “Don’t Forget To Bring A Towel.”  This might actually be a good pair to wear for trips to the gym. Then a white sole and the brand’s logo on the heel tab complete this Adidas Campus 80s South Park Towelie design.

Scheduled for release on April 20 at 7:00 a.m. in Australia and other parts of the globe, the Adidas Campus 80s South Park Towelie seems to be the first in a number of upcoming pieces from the brand’s collaboration with South Park.
