The Best Mesh Shorts Aren’t Baggy At All

Listen up. Here’s some breaking news. It’s time to dig up those mesh shorts you used to put on for practice; the kind you were forced to wear for gym class; the kind NBA players wore well into the late ’80s. They’re the right mix of streetwear and sportswear, modern and vintage, fatherhood and first-grade gym class. With the right top — say a T-shirt from your favorite streetwear brand or a plain one you buy in packs — they’re elevated from bottoms you’d pack for a workout to something you want to be seen wearing. Plus, they’re both easy to print or riff on and available in an array colors, making them ripe for customization by independent labels aplenty.

With mesh shorts, fledgling fashion brands short on cash can make a statement without emptying their first round of funding — aka its founder’s own savings account. (Big fashion houses can, too, but they’re clearly biting off what’s selling elsewhere.) I for one think a mix of both is what elevated the style. But, it’s been mostly due to the smaller brands making pairs people want to buy. Look no further polarizing fashion figure Virgil Abloh, the current head of Louis Vuitton. He started his career building a brand called Pyrex, which mostly sold Champion mesh shorts covered in logos. Then there’s New York designer Eric Emanuel, who turned his popular “EE” short into a full-on label capable of sneaker collaborations with Adidas and cap collections with New Era.

But how’d we get here, to an era where something as ordinary as the mesh short warrants a write-up like this?

Well, the story starts with Champion, technically. The same company that invented the sweatshirt and subsequently the hoodie also conceptualized the modern mesh short, which, at the time, was merely meant for uniforms. Like most other menswear, it seems, mesh shorts bounced between military branches, universities, and sports teams before reaching the general public.

They stayed slim and short — five inch inseams and shorter— up until the late ’80s. Then Michael Jordan appeared in a Nike commercial alongside known basketball super-fan Spike Lee. In it, Lee, played his popular character, Mars Blackmon, asks Jordan what makes him “the best player in the universe?” It’s a shoe commercial so obviously Nike’s paying him to say it’s the shoes, but Jordan doesn’t. Lee asks if the it’s the long shorts, which, at the time, were way baggier than those worn by other professionals. Why’d Jordan wear his like that? He was superstitious. Supposedly, for his entire career, he wore his University of North Carolina shorts under another pair, and therefore needed them to be both longer and baggier to hide the second pair underneath.

Hip-hop as a whole picked up on the trend, and the rest is history. Baggy shorts were everywhere — and on everyone. Some, however, latched onto to the look and can’t seem to let it go. Cue Sandlercore, the eponymous style of actor/director/professional dingbat Adam Sandler. He dons them well, but mostly because they seem more a part of him than not by now. You shouldn’t start wearing baggy shorts, too, if that’s what you’re wondering. Instead, get a pair from this list. They’ll fit better, hit higher and keep you cool in even the most sweltering summer heat.

1 Best Overall Mesh Shorts: Van Cortlandt Grand Shorts

Tracksmith

Tracksmith’s Van Cortlandt shorts are made from an ultra-soft mesh, feature an anti-microbial liner, a straight hem and a four-inch inseam. They’re performance bottoms but applicable for everyday wear — especially in the height of summer.

2 Best Upgrade Mesh Shorts: Old School Mesh Shorts – Summer Edition

Made in the U.S. from unlined poly performance mesh, Relax’s Old School shorts are technically made for lacrosse players. However, as retailer American Trench has pointed out, these in colors Relax calls Summer Editions are right for wearing wherever you are.

3 Best Affordable Mesh Shorts: Mesh Sport Short

Champion invented the mesh short. It’s only right they make this list. But, to be frank, the ones they sell on their own site are too long and too baggy. These are retro-tinged, the right length and come with a pre-distressed logo that sits just above the left knee.

4 Mesh Shorts

Rowing Blazers

Rowing Blazers’ mesh shorts sell out quick. Every time they’re sneakily restocked it seems they’re gone just as fast. But, these — unusually thick (in a good way) mesh shorts made in Portugal — are reason enough to keep a close eye on their site.

5 Aime Leon Dore x New Balance Gym Shorts Green

Aime Leon Dore

As I mentioned above, streetwear brands have elevated the mesh short to new heights. However, they aren’t as readily available as you’d imagine. New York label Aime Leon Dore dropped these collaborative shorts last year, but you can still find pairs of reseller sites. Stick to StockX, though, as these are new and authenticated by the company.

6 AAU Shorts

John Elliott

Few brands blend street- and sportswear as well as John Elliott’s eponymous label. These AAU shorts — a reference to the national organization that oversees youth basketball — are the right mix of vintage and modern flair. There’s a zipper pocket on the back and these are fully lined.

7 Essential Mesh Athletic Shorts

New Balance

OK. Not ready to shell out more than one hundred for a pair of…checks notes…mesh shorts? Fair. New Balance’s pair checks all of the same boxes but benefit from being more than half the price of others on this list.

8 8-Ball Mesh Short

Stüssy added some edge to the classic, prep-leaning mesh short with an 8-ball graphic and an arched text logo. It’s subtle, but the addition makes it clear these aren’t a pair you pulled out from a box in your basement.

9 Triple Hem Shorts (Gradient)

Bristol Studio

Count with me… one, two, three hems on these shorts by Bristol Studio. The inseam debate meets its match, but these aren’t convertible like the camping pants from your childhood. All three layers stack atop one another, forming a gradient of the color blue, but there are plenty of other options on the site, too. Zipper pockets keep everything you’re carrying close.

10 Monochromatic Mesh Shorts

Naturally, as everything comes full circle, skateboard brands are gravitating toward trimmer mesh shorts, too. Skateboarder Paul Rodriguez’s brand Primitive prints their logo, in red, on maroon Champion shorts.

Can Pajamas Help You Get a Better Night’s Sleep?

Let’s hope you’re not here out of desperation — that it’s not four AM wherever you are and this article is your last resort. If so, welcome; I’m sorry. If not, a-ha! You’re intentionally awake but face struggles falling asleep. Sure, there are sleep aids, but perhaps your insomnia isn’t that bad — maybe you’re just brushing up on ways to get a better night’s rest.

Well, you’re in the right place. The pertinent information lies just ahead. Pajamas may aid be the assistance you’ve been seeking all along, but be warned: they aren’t for everyone. (Hence why so many people sleep nude.) There are plenty of reasons why one might consider wearing a set —including warmth, comfort and routine — but routine wear leaves room for potential problems, too. Too far one way can throw off the body’s natural flow.

The human body is regulated on an ongoing basis by what’s known as our circadian rhythm, a cyclical chain of reactions to changes in light and temperature — aka our internal timekeeper. This subconscious cycle’s responses manifest as shifts in mood, body and mental state. As night nears, for example, our bodies steadily drop in temperature. Or, as the sun rises, we wake, most times hungry. Our temperatures peak in the late afternoon and reach their lowest point in the wee hours of the morning — which is, oftentimes, the reason it’s so hard to remove ourselves from the warmth of our beds.

The ideal room temperature, based on the temperature our bodies reach during rest, is between 66 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This window can vary by a few degrees based on the individual, but it’s nearly universal. Any higher and you’ll toss and turn. Any lower and you’ll feel disrupted, too. Pajamas could play a role in regulating your temperature, should you be more prone to being cold. If you run hot, avoid ’em. But it’s not that simple. We break down this tug of war in further details below.

Pros

Pajamas can help a scattered mind establish a manageable routine.

“The sleep ritual: besides a cup of Sleepytime Tea and a good book, pajamas can totally be part of the winding down routine,” Dr. Alex Dimitriu, who specializes in sleep and psychiatry, says. “PJs can certainly serve as a reminder for upcoming bedtime, much like taking off your work clothes at the end of the work day.”

Pajamas can be a signal to shut down phones and other screens.

“Ideally screens disappear as the PJs come on,” Dr. Dimitriu adds. If you slip into your PJs at, say, 9:00 PM — wow, early, I know — you’ll probably be better about avoiding screens until you drift off, too. Read a book! Stargaze! I don’t know.

Pajamas offer comfort and a sense of calm.

As much as temperature plays a role in getting a good night’s rest, comfort proves key, too. Being positioned improperly or bothered by a body part being exposed (mmm, a snack for the monster across the room) can cause acute insomnia.

Pajamas are hygienic (as long as you wash them, too).

Our bodies release around 300,000 dead skin cells a night (30-40,000 an hour). They also produce around a quart of sweat each sleep cycle. So, if you’re nude, those are going straight into your sheets. If you’re wearing pajamas — moisture-wicking ones with solid breathability — they’ll catch at least some of both.

Pajamas are a sign of maturity — or at least a sartorial eye.

There are entire companies dedicated to the clothing you don in the dark. If you pick out a nice set, not only will they be a comfortable companion but also something you won’t be ashamed to answer the door in, if necessary. (See: a sleepy Steve McQueen in a set of paisley pajamas.)

      mastermind world pyjamas

      End Clothing

      Cons

Pajamas could increase your body temperature.

Just as forgoing pajamas may make you too cold, wearing them may make you too hot. Either end of the spectrum can disrupt sleep, which is a finicky yet necessary function of everyday life. In fact, there was an entire study done in 2019 on whether or not what we wear to bed is ruining our chance at a restful night’s sleep. “Sleep disturbance in adults with no health concerns is often linked to the thermal environment,” the study found.

Pajamas made from synthetic fabrics are not fit for sleeping in.

When purchasing pajamas, avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester, rayon or spandex. These do not breathe as well as natural textiles like wool or cotton and can cause the body to overheat, triggering insomnia. “Small, but statistically significant sleep benefits were observed for wool over cotton and polyester sleepwear for multiple sleep parameters, while neither cotton nor polyester was responsible for any statistically significant sleep benefit over the 11 sleep parameters examined,” the aforementioned 2019 study revealed.

Wearing pajamas may lower your sperm quality.

Don’t freak out yet. Just because you’ve been wearing boxers to bed doesn’t mean your swimmers are bottom shelf. However, a study published in peer-reviewed medical journal Andrologia suggests “genital heat stress” can diminish sperm quality. They’re primarily talking about extended periods of sitting — uh oh — and how it impacts sperm quality, but tight-fitting underwear are mentioned, too. If you choose to wear bottoms in bed, opt for something natural, loose and with plenty of air flow.

Pajamas are bad for your relationship.

A 2015 study found that skin-t0-skin contact between partners during sleep triggers the release of oxytocin, “a hypothalamic nonapeptide linked to increased levels of social interaction, well-being and anti-stress effects.”

GREATS uses 100% recycled ballistic nylon from fishing nets for the Classon Utility Slide

As the heat index goes up it’s finally time to break out our summer gear and head out to the beach, pool, or just hang out in our backyard. Some might prefer the first two, but a grill all fired up, a cold one in hand, music, and an ergonomic chair is practically paradise in our current situation. Also maybe slip on some comfy footwear like the Classon Utility Slide from GREATS.

Unless you’re the fickle time, most guys would choose a durable pair of slides to last almost a lifetime. GREATS understands this and crafts the Classon Utility Slide to stick with you for a long time. Moreover, another great feature that makes it appealing is the eco-friendly effort behind it.

Much like some of the sustainable initiatives from global brands, GREATS goes green. Without compromising weight, the upper is made of 100% recycled ballistic nylon. Aside from single-use plastic, another big contributor to marine pollution is discarded fishing nets.

It becomes the material of choice as the manufacturer turns it into fabric. This then becomes an integral part of the Classon Utility Slide. Meanwhile the plush lycra lining aids in breathability here. Next, a Velcro closure system ensures a secure fit around your foot.

Also, a pair of side release buckles with an adjustable gives you a little more control over how snug you want it. As for the footbed, GREATS uses bio-based PU for the footbed and an EVA outsole for superior shock absorption. The Classon Utility Slide is a classy and reliable piece of gear for urban or outdoor excursions this season.

14 Slides to Wear This Summer

When it comes to summer footwear, think breathable and lightweight. There’s no shortage of feathery light canvas sneakers to choose from, but we also love the simplicity of a pair of slides. They’re backless like mules but open-toe like flip-flops. Slides usually have one or two straps that span across the toes and forefoot, though there are some unique variations. The style dates back to Ancient Greece and Egypt, when they were made from papyrus, twigs and various types of leaves. Slides evolved as shoemakers eventually started making them from stronger materials like leather and the style became popular in women’s fashion after WWII.

The casual slides as many know them today first appeared in 1960s when Birkenstock introduced its Madrid shoe and Adidas introduced its famous Adilette slide, a waterproof shoe designed for a German football team to use in the locker room. The slide has become more popular in recently in athleisure, streetwear and gorpcore, often with socks to match. And while you could slip into a pair poolside, the summery shoe can go anywhere. Nearly every brand has riffed on the style, applying chunky soles, futuristic materials and high-end leathers into the style. Regardless of the slide you’re going for, it’s a perfect sandal to get into for summer. Here are some picks to choose from.

12 Great Chinos to Buy Now

Chinos have been around for over 170 years. That’s longer than <a class="body-link" href="http://<a%20href=" data-vars-ga-outbound-link="http://blue jeans. Originally known as khakis, a Hindustani reference to the sandy-colored cotton twill fabric, chinos as a term began to take hold during the Spanish-American War in the late 1800s. It’s derived from the Spanish word for ‘Chinese’ and is a shortened version of chinos pantalones or ‘Chinese pants.’

They originally featured slanted or on-seam side pockets, belt loops and a wide fit, and were introduced to militaries around the world before making their way to civilian society. Today every brand has a version of its own, from the ubiquitous and affordable to the esoteric.

When we’re not wearing jeans, we’re wearing chinos. The understudy to the classic blue jean may get more shine than actual understudies and may even outdo the star on occasion. It’s about as versatile and certainly as classic. Here are our picks for the best chinos out there right now.

Additional contribution from Evan Malachosky.

The Best Aloe Vera Gels, Lotions and Sprays for Sunburn

It happens to the best of us. You’re outside, enjoying yourself, and the sun — which feels amazing in the moment — scorches down from above. Ah, bliss. But then, a few hours later, you feel a tightness overtake the top layer of your skin; then sensitivity to touch; then the glow appears: a bright red burn across your neck, shoulders and back.

Sometimes you’re forgetful. That’s OK — even when it comes to sunscreen. But, let your burns be a lesson: always wear sunscreen. Every single day! Hopefully doing so will prevent you from ever needing the products in this piece. Mistakes can happen even when you’re using sunscreen though. You might not have reapplied as religiously as the packaging instructed. Water could’ve washed some of it off; working out or simply moving around could’ve, too. Perhaps your aim when using a spray bottle needs a bit more practice. No matter how it happened, sunburn hurts — sometimes superficially more than it does your actual epidermis — and you’ll count the hours until it heals. Aloe can help.

Aloe vera — aka burn or medicine plants colloquially or Aloe barbadensis scientifically — is a cactus-like plant found in hot, dry climates: think Arizona, California and Texas. Its leaves retain moisture and store a gel within. Peeling or cutting one open will reveal it. Fit for use raw, although processing provides protection from fungus or toxins, this substance soothes sunburn by both cooling it to the touch and moisturizing and restoring the skin deeper down.

Plenty of companies make products infused with Aloe vera. In fact, few are synonymous with aloe itself. The ingredient is almost always referred to in its own right; ‘I need some aloe. Aloe will help.’ However, we’ve rounded up all those that do, offering you insights on the best aloe gels, lotions and sprays. Get out in the sun, and get these if you get burnt.

The Best Aloe Vera Gels

Gels are our time-to-get-shit-done selection. These boast most concentrated amount of aloe, thus being the most effective at battling sunburn. Grab these for your most severe cases, or keep a few bottles in the back of your cabinet just in case — or for when your sensitive friends come around.

The Best Aloe Vera Lotions

Think of lotions as a second step. For some, the sunburn might be mild and best treated without over-the-top lathering. Instead of using your usual lotion, opt for one with a a significant amount of aloe within. Some experts argue 70-percent aloe or higher proves most effective, but if you’re only seeking to hydrate stressed skin and not immediate relieve intense redness, something lower will work, too.

The Best Aloe Vera Sprays

Did you get a tan this week? Do you want to make sure your skin stays smooth through a few more days on the beach? Use a spray to gently refresh sun-kissed skin or to cool skin that’s not burnt but a bit warm.

Summer Style Essentials Every Man Needs

As with cooking, so with style. The better your ingredients, the better your dish. Flavoring and pairings give personality, context and place. A polo shirt with linen shorts versus a denim western shirt and jeans; steak frites versus chicken-fried steak. A hemp T-shirt with faded wash jeans compared to a graphic one overtop sweatshorts; pitting crudo up against fish sticks.

The maxim of “buy better, buy less” applies here. Match good taste with smart purchasing, and the two will coalesce naturally over a period of years. And although your summer wardrobe may slightly change over those years, it remains rooted in classic basics that age well with years in the sun. (As fans of vintage clothing, it’s hard not to imagine these pieces after a season under constant sunlight.)

Although there is much to love, there isn’t much to say about each of these selections. Simply put, these are bite-the-bullet-and-buy-it items — but some are surprisingly affordable. Covering most all of your bases, save for attire meant for special occasions, we present a few dozen style staples that are definitely worth the investment.

Stay protected during your ride with the AI-1 Airbag Vest from Klim

Gearing up properly for a motorcycle or bicycle ride with the boys is something one should take seriously. Unlike inside a vehicle, there is no durable frame and shell in between you and the road. The AI-1 Airbag Vest from Klim presents a solution that can likely save your life in a crash or a major wipeout. Also, it doesn’t even make you look like a clown.

Accidents can happen even to professional riders. Thus, even the basic stuff such as helmets, jackets, elbow/knee guards, gloves, and others can make a difference. What the AI-1 Airbag Vest promises is reliable and real-time adaptive protection for your back and chest.

Klim is partnering with In&motion and using the latter’s DPP system. In the event of a crash, the sensors and advanced algorithms determine the exact moment to deploy. In fact, the tech analyzes the user’s position at a rate of 1,000 times per second.

If the data indicates that the rider is falling due to various supported scenarios, the airbag will fully inflate in less than 60 milliseconds. Although it is optional, users are encouraged to allow the company to collect data. All information gathered will be used to improve the algorithm.

The AI-1 Airbag Vest weighs only 3.3 lbs and is reusable up to three times. After that, Klim might need to service it to replace the gas inflator module. The materials are breathable and the fit is ergonomic. You can wear it standalone, under your jacket, or even with a backpack (with some limitations).

Cheap Sunglasses You Can Afford to Lose This Summer

As summer settles in and beach days become more abundant, we’ve rounded up inexpensive eyewear — all under $80 — that exude a carefree style while still keeping your retinas safe from the scorching sun. And if they disappear into shuffled sand, at least you’re only out around half (sometimes a little more) a Benjamin. Sure, cheap is subjective. Lament the minor loss. Then, grab a new pair, and summer on.

Best Overall Summer Sunglasses: Le Specs Bandwagon Sunglasses

Courtesy

Bandwagon Sunglasses

Le Specs East Dane

$69.00

Le Specs is a vintage brand revived. Their current selection of styles references European ones popular in the late ’70s and early ’80s but with tweaks to their construction for improved comfort and durability. And for just $69.00, they’re a steal. Polarized lenses and a plastic frame done in a luxe tortoiseshell arrive in a branded soft case for safe carrying.

Best Affordable Summer Sunglasses: Sojos Semi-Rimless Polarized Sunglasses

Retro Semi-Rimless Polarized Sunglasses

Sojos Amazon

$18.99

$12.99 (32% off)

This is a classic look done at a fraction of the cost of more popular brands’ designs. Put ’em on and envision it: ’50s, jazz clubs (hence the Ray-Ban’s Clubmaster). Made from metal, these are polarized and feature soft, adjustable silicone nose pads.

Best Upgrade Summer Sunglasses: Izipizi Sun #D Sunglasses

Izipizi Selfridges

Polycarbonate frames and tined PVC lenses — in a mustardy green and brown, respectively — make these round frames a home run in even the most raging hot weather. 100-percent UV protection shields the eyes and a durable rubber-like feel to the frames deters dings and reduces scratches.

Spitfire BC2

Spitfire Urban Outfitters

$49.00

Black acetate and metal accents give these Spitfire frames an edge over other cheap options. They definitely reference higher-end designer pairs but present the wearer, aka you, I hope, a less painful price tag. Wear these when you want to look good but can’t guarantee they get home, too.

Huckberry Cruisers

Courtesy

Cruisers

Huckberry Huckberry

$35.00

Huckberry’s in-house eyewear line features hardy frames matched with scratch-resistant, polarized lenses. At under $40 dollars, they’re well worth it for whenever you want to put a pair through the wringer — without the guilt of getting a nicer pair grimy.

A.Kjaerbede Bate Sunglasses

Courtesy

Bate Sunglasses

A.Kjaerbede Asos

$45.00

This subtle gray pair by Denmark brand A.Kjaerbede aren’t bad at all for being $45.00 dollars and often discounted. Rounded lens and a molded nose bridge make them a versatile look for all genders. They’re unisex by design but don’t run too big nor too small.

Knockaround Mile Highs

Courtesy

Mile Highs

Knockaround Knockaround

$30.00

Love the Aviator style but can’t splurge on the pair you really want right now? Budget sunglass brand Knockaround makes their own retro-tinged rendition from gold metal, tortoiseshell rubber, and polarized, impact-resistant green lenses. They may not be built for the skies, but they certainly look the part.

Carfia Polarized Sunglasses

Courtesy

Polarized Sunglasses

Carfia Amazon

$22.99

It’s easy to be let down by budget buys off Amazon. (There are almost too many options.) Carfia’s, on the other hand, are unexpectedly nice for their price. Typically, sub$-25 dollar sunglasses don’t make through a week-long vacation, but these, which are made from corrosion-resistant acetate, withstand usual wear and then some.

Bowie Sunglasses

Courtesy

Bowie Sunglasses

Urban Outfitters Urban Outfitters

$20.00

Unfortunately, these don’t take their name from a style the iconic artist once wore. (If they did, they’d be five times the price.) These Bowie frames are instead a subtle pair of sunglasses you shouldn’t stress about losing. Nice but by no means something exclusive or limited edition, wear them on a hot day at the beach and hope for best re: bringing them back.

Bamford × Revolution GMT Joe Cool Watch

Charles Shultz’ Peanuts characters are so indelibly linked to pop culture these days that you’ll find them popping up on just about everything: greeting cards, shirts, tote bags, cardigans, and even limited edition watch collaborations.…

The post Bamford × Revolution GMT Joe Cool Watch first appeared on Cool Material.

Bell & Ross’ distinct watchmaking style shines with the BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic

Bell & Ross watches are easily identified by their combination of square-shaped cases and round dials. Although the brand also dabbles in traditional form factors every now and then, the former is the more popular option. We normally prefer its open-work dials, but the BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic might change our minds.

Some of the company company’s best work is when they endow their timepieces with an aeronautic or tactical vibe. Thus, in true form, the BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic captures this theme perfectly. If you find it familiar, that’s because there were previous models with a similar design.

However, the third and newest model is by far the most striking among the collection. It comes in a 42 mm matte black ceramic case that should please fans of stealthier profiles. Bell & Ross calls it BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic for a good reason. This comes from the red sapphire crystal, numerals, and indices

The graphics all combine to make it look like its actual namesake. Bell & Ross even went as far as to paint images of two aircraft. Telling the time with the BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic is actually easy despite its complicated presentation.

There are two concentric discs and the inner one with the fighter jet is for the minutes. The hours can be gleaned from the other one with what looks like a bigger passenger plane. Meanwhile, the classic second hand represents the scanning bar and completes the functions.

Fully wound, the BR-CAL.302 automatic movement is good for 42 hours. Finally, you have a hybrid ultra-resilient black synthetic fabric and black rubber strap with a black PVD steel pin buckle closure. Bell & Ross never fails to impress and the BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic is a testament to their creativity.

Jacob & Co is making only 9 examples of the Fast & Furious Twin Turbo watch

Jacob & Co makes some of the world’s most intricate and luxurious watches. What sets them apart from their contemporaries is the avant-garde designs of their timepieces. Moreover, the intricate details that go into each one are remarkable. Their most recent release is a tribute to a long-running movie franchise. The Fast & Furious Twin Turbo lives up to name with its automotive theme.

This watch does not only boast a high level of luxury you associate with the brand. The features it packs are likewise impressive. According to Jacob & Co, it’s the first time four sophisticated complications are packed together. There’s a monopusher chronograph, a twin triple-axis tourbillon, and decimal repeater.

Many experts point out that the latter is a grueling task for any watchmaker to handle Moreover, this makes the Fast & Furious Twin Turbo a very special 832-component model. Generating the horsepower behind the scenes is a Jacob & Co JCFM05 manual movement with a 50-hour power reserve.

It is an awesome expression of high watchmaking for the elite and fans of the films. The visuals on the semi open-work dial show a lovely lady holding two checkered flags with two iconic vehicles ready to race. Meanwhile, Super-LumiNova coats the indices and hands for superior low-light visibility.

Then there are the two triple-axis tourbillons flanking the power reserve indicator which looks like a fuel gauge. The Fast & Furious Twin Turbo sports a 57 x 52 x17 mm titanium and carbon case with a curved sapphire crystal.

The exhibition caseback lets you view the caliber in action. Finishing it off is a black leather strap with a titanium deployant buckle. Jacob & Co is only making 9 examples of the Fast & Furious Twin Turbo to commemorate the release of the ninth film in the saga.

Did Tyler, The Creator Hide a Clothing Collection in His Album Drop?

Tyler, The Creator’s — though he prefers Tyler Baudelaire right now — metamorphosis continues. He admits it on his new album, Call Me If You Get Lost. Specifically, on a track called “MASSA,” where he credits Skateboard P, aka Pharrell, with altering his outlook. “Yo, my boy Skateboard P gave me that speech in Italy session,” he raps. “Thankfully, by hour three that detour perspective. Thoughts change so rapid, turn into a butterfly, Flower Boy happened,” he ends, referencing his critically-acclaimed fourth album of the same name.

Deeper into the album, on track 13, “BLESSED,” a bit of spoken word offers listeners insights into his other ventures. Namely, his clothing line, GOLF, his shoe business, LE FLEUR, and his work scoring movies and commercials.

style

Courtesy

“Golf Wang’s doing amazing, might open up another store, Le FLEUR* is goin’ insane, smell good, nail polish, Converse, Gucci, Camp Flog Gnaw one of the best festivals, I’m healthy, my skin glowin’, my friends healthy,” he says. Get a skincare routine like Tyler’s!

So, if everything’s going well, can fans expect another GOLF collection soon? Probably. The music videos Tyler dropped in the run-up to his album release date hinted at it. (Then his album lyrics nearly confirmed it.) It’s all speculation at this point — there is an album-related collection on his site right now — but he’s given us plenty of reason to be on guard with credit cards ready.

style

Courtesy

First, there’s the leopard-printed safari vest with pops of blue and yellow he’s wearing in the “WUSYANAME” video. Since he debuted a similar one, albeit in a brighter orange and green color way, in GOLF’s SS19 collection, it’s safe to assume this is that sweater but in new hues. Then, in the “LUMBERJACK” video, he’s wearing what looks like a LE FLEUR hat, a camp collar shirt with a similar pattern as the sweater, a cardigan that matches, loafers and a sky blue Ushanka hat. Finally, in “SIDE STREET,” he’s wearing a bright red cardigan — my best is Lacoste — and another Ushanka. This final piece might not be one of his own, but it’s certainly a point of reference nonetheless.

style

Courtesy

Tyler called his style “summertime prep school” on another song. The formula for his outfits — pastels, animal prints, cardigans, camp collar shirts, jewelry by Alex Moss, white socks and loafers, pleated pants, and… Ushanka hats — looks like costuming in the setting of music videos or album photoshoots, but it carries over well into real-life. And though I may not look as cool as Tyler wearing any of it, I’m ready to try. I’ll be waiting for news of the new collection.

The Best Mineral Sunscreens

While most chemical sunscreens on the market have been cleared for safe use by the FDA, it makes perfect sense as to why people would rather opt for mineral / physical options. A mineral sunscreen sits atop your skin and reflects harmful UVA and UVB rays, and their natural active sunscreen ingredients (typically zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) don’t raise red flags like some chemical ingredients.

Those chemical counterparts work by absorbing into your skin, and then absorbing any UV rays that hit the dermis. They neutralize the UV rays in order to prevent burn and the sun’s photo-aging effects on skin (think wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, rough texture, etc, not to mention skin cancer). They protect just as aptly as mineral sunscreens when applied thoroughly and correctly, and every two hours (or after a swim/sweat).

So when people have the debate about which is better, it’s rarely one about efficacy. And the biggest red flag of chemical ingredients, oxybenzone (which is known to disrupt hormones), has more or less been banished. Still, those chemical ingredients absorb into the bloodstream, and their presence can sometimes be measured weeks later. That is why the debate is usually won by mineral options.

The key challenge facing mineral sunscreens, though, is creating something that blends fully into the skin, without leaving a chalky white cast. (You know when someone is wearing a poorly engineered mineral/physical sunscreen, even if their skin is pearly white. There’s that matte, chalky layer all over the skin.)

In picking the best mineral sunscreens from the hundreds in orbit, we chose the following baseline: Each has to be pure mineral/physical UV shields (and not a combination of mineral and chemical); each must have a minimum of broad-spectrum SPF 30 (the recommendation of the ADA, FDA, Skin Cancer Institute, and every dermatologist everywhere); and it must not leave an egregious white cast in its wake.

Some of the below are dedicated face sunscreens, some are for the body, and a couple will cover you head to toe. Pay close attention when shopping, because some body sunscreen formulas contain comedogenic ingredients that will clog the pores on the face. Hence the separation between the two.

Best Overall Mineral Sunscreen: Svens Everyday Sunscreen SPF 33 (Face and Body)

Amazon

Everyday Mineral Sunscreen SPF 33

Svens amazon.com

$13.99

Svens’ is a curious brand: They have this single SPF 33 product, and they do it so well. It is a full-body, reef-friendly, mineral-defense sunscreen. You get a few bonus SPF levels than the baseline (33 total in this case) for a dash of extra defense. And at $14, for a generous but travel-friend 3.4 oz., it’s one of the most cost-effective options on the roster.

But when I say that there is no white cast in its wake on this one, I mean there is truly no debate, and no extra rubbing in just to make it so. A few people might prefer to designate it to the body (some of my friends have, though I’m oily skinned and still find it feels light on my face). Either way, Svens is the name to remember in sunscreen, which is a relief for them, as they’ve bet all their chips on the category.

Best High-End: Supergoop! Mineral Sheerscreen Lotion SPF 30 (Face)

Sephora

Mineral Sheerscreen SPF 30 PA+++

Supergoop! sephora.com

$38.00

Supergoop! is one of the key players in the nuanced SPF game, offering everyday sun-shielding products that fit a range of needs. This zinc-oxide-powered lightweight face lotion goes on sheer (er, clear), and wears light atop (or below) your favorite non-SPF moisturizer. Many people rely on this product as a primer for makeup, since they don’t want to apply SPF after the makeup itself. It works wonderfully under small spot-check cover-ups, too, if you’re using a concealer to mask a single unsightly pimple.

Best Affordable: CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 (Body)

Amazon

100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

CeraVe amazon.com

$17.74

Sure, we applaud any full-body sunscreen that is non-comedogenic for the face but also high-volume enough to justify slathering on the body… but, we also celebrate the dedicated sunscreens that cover their bases effectively and at an affordable cost. This 5-oz. body-dedicated bottle uses a zinc-oxide shield and deploys three types of ceramides to preserve the skin’s moisture levels against oppressors like heat, saltwater, chlorine, and more. It’s devised for sensitive skin, making it family-friendly, too. (Though, the same can be said for most unscented mineral-based sunscreens.)

Salt & Stone Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30 (Face and Body)

Amazon

SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

Salt & Stone amazon.com

$18.00

There’s a lot of love to share here: Founded by professional snowboarder Nima Jalali, Salt & Stone makes products that suit the outdoor extremists (we’re talking surfers, skaters, boarders) but that also accommodate all consumers. This reef-safe recipe utilizes zinc oxide to bounce rays but also contains hyaluronic acid for hydration, green tea to combat inflammation and bacteria, as well as ashwagandha for defense against toxins. It’s as much a moisturizer as it is a sunscreen, it covers you head to toe, and at $18 for 3 ounces, it’s also a bargain. Oh, and it’s water- and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes — because the sunscreen demands for athletes and enthusiasts should be the baseline for us all.

Ghost Democracy Invisible Lightweight Daily Sunscreen SPF 33 (Face)

Ghost Democracy

Invisible Lightweight Daily Sunscreen

Ghost Democracy ghostdemocracy.com

$32.00

An oil-free face-friendly formula combines zinc oxide with niacinamide, the latter of which helps improve the surface texture of your skin. (And prevent some of the sun’s damage, like fine lines, discoloration, etc.) It uses turmeric to combat inflammation, as well as artichoke leaf extract to neutralize skin-aging free radicals. It’s so good on skin that it’s practically a moisturizer.

Hawthorne Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 (Face)

Hawthorne

Face Sunscreen

Hawthorne hawthorne.co

$16.00

This face sunscreen is a multitasker: It utilizes hydrating coconut alkanes, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory green tea extract, as well as a zinc-oxide-and-titanium-dioxide UV defense to keep your face looking firm, fed and photo-ready. (Not to mention, nice and matte, too, for the oily-skinned among us.)

Bare Republic Mineral Sport Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 (Body)

Amazon

Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

Bare Republic amazon.com

This sport sunscreen for the body takes things up a notch to SPF 50 (meaning it blocks 98% of the sun’s UVB rays, as opposed to the 97% that SPF 30 blocks). It’s a better baseline for fairer skin, but also a prime choice for athletes and splashmakers since it is resistant to sweat and water for up to 80 minutes. It takes a little extra rubbing than others on this list, but it’s a terrific price point, and a lightweight pick for sweaty bodies.

UNDONE goes retro-modern with a Middle Eastern flair for the Stellar collection

After spoiling its fans with a wonderful lineup of new timepieces this June, we were thinking of wrapping things up for UNDONE until next month. Instead, our friends over in Hong Kong were cooking up another surprise. As such, let’s welcome another exclusive lineup which is the Stellar collection.

UNDONE reveals these models draw inspiration from classic wristwatches that were popular among the elite in the Middle East. A while back, the watchmaker also designed the beautiful Arabian Nights as a tribute to the mystical tales from the region.

For its latest outing, we have vintage elements paired to a more contemporary profile. You are getting a chronograph with a timeless aesthetic which will be available in flamboyant shades to match the sunny theme of the season. Just like what we said before, summer brings forth all the cool stuff.

There are three color variants available: Tiff Blue, Purple, and Yellow. Not to worry because the trio all share the same specifications. Before we go in-depth about the Stellar collection, UNDONE notes that this is a limited-edition release.

The sale period starts today and will run until July 8, 2021. Within this two-week window, only 300 serialized examples of each chromatic combo are on offer. It’s highly likely nostalgic collectors will grab at least one of every hue. Join us as we give you an overview of what the Stellar collection is all about.

Technical overview

Specs

  • Case Material: 316L Stainless Steel
  • Case Size – Excluding Crown (mm): 40
  • Case Thickness – Including Crystal (mm): 12
  • Lens Material: Hardened Domed K1 Crystal
  • Strap Material: Leather
  • Strap Width (mm): 20
  • Bezel Type: Fixed
  • Movement: Japanese TMI VK64 Mechanical-Quartz Hybrid Flyback Chronograph
  • Water Resistance (ATM/Meters): 3/30
In-Depth With the Stellar collection

Although most guys prefer to have their accessories in darker tones, hints of other colors provide a welcome contrast to what might have been a monochrome aesthetic. Meanwhile, UNDONE shows us that they can pull off an elegant look even with bright colorways. The Stellar collection is exactly as the name suggests courtesy of the striking details within.

To start off, we have a 40 mm 316L stainless steel case that measures 12 mm thick with the domed K1 crystal. Almost everything has been polished except for the caseband and lugs which sport a brushed finish instead. Being a chronograph, you have the crown with the brand’s “U” emblem engraved on top and is then flanked by two pushers.

UNDONE proudly points out the high gloss enamel of the dial that gives owners the illusion of paint which has yet to dry. Each one undergoes several sanding sessions to eliminate the “orange peel” effect. Nobody wants to see uneven surfaces that are visible from almost any angle unless it’s actually by design. Thankfully, the Stellar does not have the problem.

Going back to the dial, you have applied silver stick hour markers with a minute track in black save for the Purple variant which has it in white. Just below 12 o’clock is a printed Khanjar emblem. Apparently, you can only find this on special edition watches that are usually given as gifts in the Middle East.

The crest is again visible on the glass of its exhibition caseback which also gives us a peek inside. Within, there is a Japanese TMI VK64 Mechanical-Quartz Hybrid Flyback Chronograph movement pushing things along. Finally, the Khanjar logo appears once more on the dark brown leather strap which accompanies each Stellar, along with their respective colorful Epsom-grained leather strap.

Our take on the Stellar Collection

After reviewing several unique and memorable timepiece from UNDONE, there’s essentially nothing that we would consider negative about the brand. The Stellar collection is no different as we continue to see the hallmarks of impressive craftsmanship and attention to quality.

We believe that every variant will call out to people who find it complimentary to their personal style. Moreover, the inclusion of two quick-release leather straps allows you to quickly switch it up to fit any occasion. With all three colorways in your possession, you now have a Stellar collection and nobody can refute that claim.

Purchase it now from UNDONE

12 Great Bucket Hats to Wear This Season

With summer in full swing, it’s hard to think of sunny days without bucket hats. Early on, however, the bucket hat was meant for more inclement weather. First seen on the heads of fishermen in the early 1900s, the bucket was originally embodied in woolen tweed fabrics which were naturally water-repellent. From there, the hat moved ashore as the Irish walking hat and became a staple piece of the country’s style through the mid-1900s.

Today, thanks to tropical military uniforms, bucket hats have more of a warm-weather connotation and are usually seen in a canvas or twill fabric. But like their predecessor, they still come with a wide, downward-sloping brim that spans the entire perimeter of the crown. Just as all bucket hats provide us with 360-degree coverage, we’ve rounded up a list of bucket hats from all angles.

Best Overall Bucket Hat: American Trench Corduroy Bucket Hat

Cut from 100-percent corduroy fabric made in New York, American Trench’s bucket hat boasts very little branding and a super-soft, velvet-like, fine whale feel. It’s nice enough to dress up, I’d argue.

Best Upgrade Bucket Hat: Kapital Patchwork Bandana-Print Cotton Bucket Hat

You’re already wearing a bucket hat. Don’t be shy about letting be a bit loud. Bandana motifs are a surefire marker of a Kapital accessory, and this cotton bucket hat has four different swatches sewn into it. It’s one-size-fits-all with a circumference of 21.7 inches.

Trust a surf brand to make one of the best bucket hats around. (Yes, it has since evolved into a streetwear giant, but look back at their roots!) Stüssy’s Jute Weave one comes in two sizes, small/medium and large/x-large. It’s sturdier, with a unique, almost burlap-like texture afforded by its weave.

Battenwear Reversible Bucket Hat

Ever think to yourself, ‘Oh, I wish I could turn this hat inside out?’ No? Although it may seem like a ploy for someone on the run, Battenwear’s nylon bucket hat is reversible for a reason: to be subtle on one side and to show off their Ikat pattern on the other. Plus, it packs down small enough to fit inside your pant pocket.

Since we’re recommending you wear bucket hats at the height of the year’s hottest season, why not provide you with a white one. (White textiles absorb less visible light.) Adsum’s Daisy — green name — number is made from 16S twill, aka super-soft cotton.

New Balance gives us a reason to enjoy our runs with the FuelCell RC Elite V2

Even before cycling surged in popularity amid these trying times, running was the exercise of choice among fitness fanatics. It still seems to be that way as we continue to spot awesome gear for such an activity. New Balance presents its latest model — the FuelCell RC Elite V2 — designed to boost your performance. The manufacturer equips it with the latest technology to help you get a leg up on the competition.

The pair ships in only one color, but not to worry because it looks ready to race. New Balance calls it white with neo flame and the crimson accents live up to the name. Running shoes normally sport brighter chromatic combinations to help keep the wearer visible for road safety.

Still, it would have been better to have more colorways available for the FuelCell RC Elite V2. Anyway, the running shoes are lightweight yet durable with a breathable knit upper. You have the New Balance branding on the medial section just below the eyestays. The color of the text transitions from black to red.

Next is the Flying NB graphics on the forefoot and extends to the lateral side. FuelCell foam midsole helps absorb each impact as you run and returns the energy to propel you forward. This is possible with the help of the full-length carbon fiber plate.

We like how this component is actually visible from the outsole thanks to the midfoot cutout. “The FuelCell RC Elite v2 is designed to give you a competitive edge on race day,” says New Balance. With these on your feet, comfort, energy return, and style are what it brings to the table.
