Official: Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak

Winning the iconic Pikes Peak hill climb is one of the biggest motorsports achievements out there. The Pikes Peak track measures 12.42 miles (19.99 km) with 156 turns and 1,440 miles of height gain. Volkswagen have never won the event. They are hoping that this years will be the year! Faster than both Formula E and Formula 1 cars; its competitor will be the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak.

The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak is a fully electric super sports car. Volkswagen claim 680 hp with 650 Nm of torque in a package weighing less than 1,100 kg. These statistics allow a 2.25 second sprint to 100 km/h. The car is powered by two electric engines with lithium ion batteries which are 20 percept replenished during the drive from engine recovery.

The targets for the Volkswagen project include the existing record of 8:57.118 minutes for electric cars at the “Race to the Clouds”. That time was set by Rodney Millen in Latvian creation e0 PP100. Sebastien Loeb’s overall, unlimited record, set with the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak seem unobtainable at 8:13.878!

The iconic Pikes Peak hill climb will take place on 24 June 2018. Volkswagen have secured the services of reigning Pikes Peak champion, Romain Dumas.

Official: 2019 Audi A6 Avant

Following hot on the heels of the new Audi A6, the Avant version has big boots to fill. The current generation A6 Avant is one of the most successful estate cars in history. We are particularly fond of the RS version which has earned its reputation as the market-leading family car.

The new Audi A6 Avant offers much the same blend as the old model. It delivers between 565 and 1,680 litres of load capacity while offering performance and comfort by the bucket load. The interior has also been completely refreshed with the latest in Audi’s fully digital MMI experience.

The rear end of the Avant looks less and less like an estate car with every generation. With a tapered rear hatch, the design hides it’s almost five-metre length extremely well. The tailgate has electronic opening as standard with an optional sensor control. Interior space is said to be class leading while we expect the A6 to share the same acoustic dampening qualities as the new A7 and A8. It has a drag coefficient of just 0.27.

Audi will also pack the A6 with a huge number of safety systems. LED headlights are standard with three versions available including the HD Matrix LED headlights. Two packages will be available called “City” and “Tour”. In addition to the standard emergency braking assist, the driver assistance systems will also include adaptive cruise assist with narrowed road assist.

All engine options are fitted as standard with a mild hybrid system which we have already experienced in cars such as the A7. The belt alternator starter recovers up to 12 kW during braking through the 48 V system and the electricity is fed into a separate lithium-ion battery. Between 55 and 160 km/h, the A6 Avant can coast with the start-stop kicking in at 22 km/h. Power is transferred to the road either through a seven-speed S tronic or an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox with optional sport differential.

In Europe, early customers will get the choice of a 3.0-liter TFSI V6 with 340 hp and 368 pound-feet of torque or a 3.0-liter TDI V6 rated at 286 hp and 457 pound-feet. Other options will become available later in the year and into next year.

Dynamic all-wheel steering is an option. Four different suspension variants are on offer too with standard steel-spring suspension, a sport suspension system, a suspension system with shock absorber control and adaptive air suspension with controlled shock absorbers. The electronic chassis platform (ECP) actively distributes the drive torque between the rear wheels with the settings adjustable through the Audi drive select dynamic handling system.

The interior is typical modern Audi. A stylish, minimalist look uses a black panel surface with an MMI touch response display. The lower 8.6 inch display is used for climate control, comfort functions and text input.

Four equipment lines are available, each with its own color concept: sport, design, design selection and the S line sport package. Various seat options are available, an air quality package with two different fragrances as well as an ionizer, a large panoramic glass sunroof and adaptive windshield wipers with integrated washer jets.

No word on pricing or availability yet.

Official: 2019 Maserati Levante Trofeo

After a performance SUV? It would seem that you aren’t alone! Performance SUV’s are in high demand at the moment. Mercedes-AMG, BMW and Audi all produce high performance versions of their SUV’s. Lamborghini, Bentley and even Rolls-Royce have realised the potential too. Maserati? The Maserati Levante Trofeo fills that gap in their model range.

The Levante has been around for a little while now. The Maserati Levante Trofeo is the natural extension of the platform. Introduced at the New York Auto Show 2018 last week, it features a Ferrari-developed V8 engine. It is one of the fastest SUV’s currently on the market, if not the fastest!

The example in the press photos is a limited series model, aimed at the U.S. and Canada market, although we expect that the Maserati Levante Trofeo will soon be available worldwide. It comes fitted with a 3.8-litre Twin Turbo V8 engine delivering a staggering 590 hp and 730 Nm of torque. 0 to 100km/h is possible in just 3.9 seconds with a top speed in excess of 300 km/h.

Underpinning the Levante is a unique calibration for the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. From the cabin, the driver is able to choose the new “Corsa” mode together with the Normal, I.C.E., Sport and Off Road modes. The Maserati Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) system replaces the traditional Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system.

Stylistically, the Levante gets new carbon fibre exterior pieces. The side air intakes sit lower, with two aerodynamic wings. New bezel blades and a carbon fibre splitter finish the front. A new rear diffuser and a set of quad exhaust pipes finish the rear. The headlights are new Full Matrix LED units and the detailing is piano black. The c-pillars get “Seatta” Trofeo logos.

At the business end of things are a set of 22-inch forged aluminium wheels – the largest ever fitted to a Maserati. Calipers come in red, blue, black, silver or yellow.

Inside, the sport seats feature full-grain “Pieno Fiore” natural leather in black, red and tan each with contrasting stitching. Inlays are matte carbon fibre with a specific instrument cluster graphic and Trofeo floor mats. An exclusive option is the Bowers & Wilkins, 1,280-watt, 17-speaker sound system.

The launch edition model will get eight unique exterior colours and most of the spec list ticked. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Official: 2019 Audi RS5 Sportback

Audi Sport is grabbing into its parts bin to create a new car and a new segment: The RS5 Sportback is an A5 Sportback with the 450-horsepower engine of the RS5 Coupe and the RS4 Avant.

This awesome power (and a whopping 600 Nm of torque) comes courtesy of a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6, co-developed with Porsche. The only available transmission is a ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic which sends the torque to all four wheels. The default 40:60 front/rear torque distribution is variable between an 85:15 and a 30:70 front/rear ratio.

For even more agility, Audi Sport offers a rear sports differential, a sports chassis and dynamic steering. For ultimate braking performance, you can order carbon-ceramic brakes.

While we haven’t driven the RS5 Sportback yet – it was launched in New York tonight – our experiences behind the wheel of both the RS5 Coupe and the RS4 Avant lead us to expect nothing less than an ultra-fast and laser-precise machine of extrem agility.

What’s more, the RS5 Sportback looks great, with its gently sloping roofline that contrasts with the aggressive “blisters” above the 19- or 20-inch wheels, wide head- and taillights, a honeycomb mesh grille and two fat, oval exhaust pipes.

Beyond the already impressive standard look, you can order carbon fiber, matte aluminum or high-gloss black decor. A number of more or less tasteful colours further enhance the design, the most extreme being the “sonoma green metallic” showcased on the computer-generated images that Audi supplied with the initial information. Inside, there is a plethora of RS logos, and the TFT cluster features specific RS gages.

The Audi RS5 Sportback comes to market in mid-2018. America gets the first batch of models, the rest of the world will receive the new model shortly thereafter. There is no direct competition; the closest competitors are the more conventionally designed BMW M3, Cadillac ATS-V and Mercedes-AMG C63.

Official: 2019 Jaguar F-PACE SVR

Jaguar have used the New York Motor Show 2018 to present a new addition to the F-Pace range, a Jaguar F-PACE SVR! The long awaited performance version of the SUV emerges a few years into production with Jaguar’s familiar Supercharged V8.

The 5.0 litre V8 engine strapped to the SVR generates 550 hp and 680 Nm of torque. It manages a 0 to 60 mph sprint of just 4.1 seconds, taking 0.2 seconds longer to hit 100 km/h, impressive figures for a heavy SUV. Top speed is claimed at 176mph (283km/h).

The SVR aerodynamic package has adds unique front and rear bumpers, lower body sides and rear boot lid spoiler. The combination of parts enhance are claimed to improve cooling, reduce lift and drag and improve high-speed stability. An exclusive SVR bonnet features further venting to extract hot air.

When it hits the road this summer, it will be priced from £74,835 including UK taxes.

Zenvo at the Geneva Motor Show 2018

Danish hypercar manufacturer Zenvo has presented a their model for its TS model range at the Geneva Motor Show 2018. The Danish manufacturer appears to be alive and kicking although we have to admit that we haven’t seen any customer cars on the road yet! We took a closer look and found out what differentiates the Zenvo TSR-S.

Zenvo TSR-S

The third model in the TS (Twin Supercharged) model lineup joins the TS1 GT and TSR track car. The headline figures are an increase in power. Zenvo’s 5.8 litre twin-supercharged V8 produces a staggering 1,177 bhp and 1,100 Nm of torque through a 7-speed transmission or a race gearbox. It allows a 100 km/h sprint of 2.8 seconds and 200 km/h sprint in 6.8 seconds.

The TSR-S is essentially a street-legal version of the TSR, track car announced last year. The Centripetal Wing is brand new with an active multi-axis design which acts as an air brake, rotating to generate inward force with the conventional downforce. It’s a bit like an aerodynamic gimbal.

Zenvo’s production of the TSR-S is apparently underway and will form part of Zenvo’s limited production of just five cars a year. We hope to see one on the road in the coming year!
