A brand new Mercedes-AMG SL

While many convertibles these days come with a rigid roof that folds down in some way or another, for the next generation of the famous Mercedes SL Super Leight it’s a return to the canvas folding roof, heck, even Rolls Royce and Bentley stick with their fabric roofs on the convertible models, so why shouldn’t Mercedes do the same on this new car that is officially called the Mercedes-AMG SL, a legacy that goes back 70 years into the past with the legendary 300 SL from 1952, a very successful race car.

“The new SL combines the sporty genes of the original SL with the driving performance typical of AMG. At the same time, it offers luxury and comfort at the absolute top level. This combination is unique in the sports car segment and is also reflected in the interior – where the highest levels of comfort and quality meet the right helping of sportiness. The high-quality combination of the analog world and state-of-the-art digital equipment makes it clear that the new SL is the rebirth of an icon for the modern era”, says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL is a combination of the sensual Mercedes design with the aggressiveness of AMG, just one detail is the two ‘bulges’ on the engine cover that are a direct hint to the very first generation of Mercedes SL cars, but another typical giveaway for an SL is the long wheelbase with short overhangs front and rear, the low windshield and wide rear, reminiscent of traditional SL proportions with a modern interpretation, the new car looks great, with or without the roof closed.

If you take a look at the AMG-bespoke front grille you’ll notice a total of 14 vertical slats, once again a direct inspiration from the 1952 Mercedes 300 SL, the Gullwing, but now with very thin LED headlights and taillights to create the impression this already low and wide car is even lower and wider visually.

While on the interior the combination of sports and luxury is another testament to the homage they want to give to the 300 SL, the finest materials fitted by the best artisans possible result in extreme levels of comfort, while still retaining the sportscar feeling, a 2+2 car that is, as the new Mercedes-AMG SL can fit two people in the rear … given they aren’t taller than 150cm that is, while the driver and passenger are seated in electrically adjustable AMG sports seats, complete with the AIRSCARF for more comfort, if you really insist, you can even order optional AMG Performance seats.

The Mercedes-AMG SL is based on a new development vehicle architecture, the 2+2 seater comes with a lightweight aluminum spaceframe chassis, created from the ground up, nothing was taken from either the previous SL or the AMG GT Roadster, the Mercedes-AMG SL is a completely new car altogether, combining materials like aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber, and steel for the windshield for added safety, still the entire bodyshell weighs only 270 kgs.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL comes with active aero, called AIRPANEL on this car, it’s a two-piece active air control system, the first operates with vertical louvers inside the lower air intake at the front, while the second piece sits behind the upper air intake with horizontal louvers, all louvers are closed normally to drag and allow air to be directed specifically towards the underbody. In this configuration, they also reduce front lift, but when a certain temperature on predefined components is reached, and the demand for cooling air is particularly high do these louvers open, the second piece from 180 km/h and more, to direct a maximum of cool air to flow onto the heat exchangers.

While the rear naturally has an active wing, that sits flush with the boot lid normally, is raised when speeds go over 80 km/h in five different angles, but there is an optional active aero listed, hiding underneath the car just in front of the engine, a carbon fiber lip that can be extended 40 mm down to create a venturi effect that ‘sucks’ the car down to the street to reduce axle-lift.

The choice for a soft-top convertible on the new Mercedes-AMG SL was quickly made when it came out this would shave 21 kgs in weight from the top of the car, hence reducing the center of gravity considerably, it takes just 15 seconds to open, or close, and this action can be performed at speeds up to 60 km/h, the three-layer design of the soft-top consists of a tightly stretched outer shell, precisely crafted roof liner and the acoustic mat made of high-quality 450 g/m² material inserted in between.

For the launch of the Mercedes-AMG SL there is an option of two different power outputs from the famous AMG 4-Liter Biturbo V8 engine, the top of the line model will come with the 585 hp unit and is called the SL 63 4MATIC+, with 800 Nm of torque, acceleration takes just 3.6 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h while the top speed is a staggering 315 km/h. There will also be an SL 55 4MATIC+ with ‘only’ 476 hp and 700 Nm of torque, acceleration figures for this ‘entry-level’ model will be 3.9 seconds while she will run out of breath at 295 km/h, at this time an AMG E PERFORMANCE hybrid is already being developed.

All Mercedes-AMG SL will be 4MATIC models, hence feature four-wheel drive for the first time in 70 years, power from the V8 engine goes through a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission, fully variable torque distribution to the front and rear axles ensures optimal traction right up to the physical limit, another first in the SL legacy is active rear-wheel steering, and we all know how this alters both low speed and high-speed maneuvers.

I have to admit I’ve been a fan of the topless Mercedes SL for many years, personally, I would prefer a 300 SL convertible of the much more valuable Gullwing model, but that’s just me, I also liked the E107, the classic that was built between 1971 and 1989, specifically the later SL500 model with a removable hardtop for instance, while the R129 is a sculpture of automotive art … and somehow this new Mercedes-AMG SL looks totally different, a lot more contemporary, but she’s still a beauty, and I sure wouldn’t mind parking the SL 63 on my driveway.

Maybach Announces Limited Edition “Edition 100”

The father and son Wilhelm and Karl Maybach were gifted designers, and they lived their credo of “What is good must also be beautiful.” And it showed as they were pioneers in style and known trailblazers in terms of automotive luxury. Their formula may sound simple, but they created wonders; they were able to bring together perfection and craftsmanship with technical and design innovations. And until today, those values are synonymous to the name Maybach.

The Mercedes-Maybach brand has continued to grow and innovate, creating new models, and soon, they will also offer electric vehicles. Recently, Mercedes-Maybach presented the “Concept EQS” at the IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich. It was a slight preview of their first fully electric model series from 2023. The concept will be based on premium-class electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and the modular architecture for luxury.

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Mercedes-Maybach presented the “Edition 100” which is a special edition of the current S-Class. The “Edition 100” will be limited to only 100 units worldwide and will be available in the US during the first half of 2022.

Maybach History

Wilhelm Maybach was born in 1846 and was a close friend of Gottlieb Daimler. He initially worked for Daimler – Motoren – Gesellschaft. He had many innovations and among them is the first Mercedes, and it completely ruled the Nice Race Week in 1901. For this achievement, he was given the nickname “Roi des Constructeurs” which means King of the Constructors. Wilhelm and his son, Karl, wanted to create “the best of the best” so they made sure to merge progress with form.

Wilhelm stated, “I think about it around the clock, a constant impulse: the perfection of the technology.”

In September 1921, in a motor show in Berlin, Maybach Motorenbau GmbH unveiled their first mass-produced car. The W 3 was like a moving work of art. It was the first German production car with epicyclic gear system, four-wheel brakes, and a luxury interior. It excited the audience, and it became an instant legend. “Motor” magazine described them saying, “A new star in the automotive firmament is beginning to shine.”

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Maybach name was the epitome of craftsmanship and technical refinement and embodying character and social position. Maybach meant custom-made luxury. Since then, kings, industrialists, artists, and the like were driven around in regal limousines and majestic Pullman sedans. They were able to travel the world in cabriolets, roadsters, and chic coupes. Each Maybach model was equipped differently. In 1928, there was even an Indian maharajah who had his limousine decorated with rubies and gold.

In 1960, after the death of Karl Maybach, Daimler-Benz entered the picture.

Maybach was revived as an independent brand in 2002. Until the early part of 2013, customers all over the world received their legendary vehicles like the Maybach 57, Maybach 62, and Maybach 62 Landaulet. Still, the driving force of the Maybach engineers and designers was automotive excellence.

In 2014, Mercedes-Maybach became a Mercedes-Benz brand. Alongside the standard Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and GLD models, they will also be launching the S 600 Pullmant. They also had limited-edition special models like the S 650 Cabriolet and the G 650 Landaulet. Their core markets are China, South Korea, Russia, Germany, and the USA.

Each model released embodies being the ‘best of the best’ and they were all made in consultation with customers at the Center of Excellence in Sindelfingen near Stuttgart. The vehicles can also be customized on request to the Mercedes-Maybach MANUFAKTUR program, offering craftsmanship and perfection with every unit.

Head of Top End Vehicle Group Mercedes-Benz AG and CEO Mercedes- AMG GmbH Philipp Schiemer stated, “It’s about the passionate combination of every detail, no matter how small, that makes a luxury car a Maybach – all in combination with state-of-the-art technology from Mercedes-Benz. Every Mercedes- Maybach stands for Sophisticated Luxury in all its facets – for our customers who are looking for something very special.”

Mercedes-Maybach “Edition 100”

To celebrate its 100-year anniversary, the brand continues its quest to provide maximum individuality, independence, and comfort with a new high-tech model.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the perfect luxury sedan equipped with a V12 engine that can produce 621 hp. It has noise-insulated first-class rear compartment with Burmester 4D surround sound system. The seats have heat and massage functions, as well as high-tech infotainment screens. The model has a 7-inch longer wheelbase compared to the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class and for the first time, it is equipped with an all-wheel drive.

There is no better tribute to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class than having a limited run “Edition 100” that is limited to only 100 units worldwide. The S-Class is hand-painted to have a two-tone Cirrus Silver/Nautical Blue finish. For the interior, it was given a special design in MANUFAKTUR Crystal White/Silver Gray Pearl. The impressive radiator grille sports the brand emblem. The C-pillar carries the brand logo as well as the “Edition 100” inscription and it can also be seen in various stowage compartments and illuminated panels in the interior. The hub caps also proudly bear the “Edition 100” emblem, and the wheels are given a new grey finish.

There will also be a car cover that has the iconic double M. Clients will also be given a beautiful handmade case made from soft crystal white or black leather that is made to store keys and papers to further show the exclusivity of the edition. As part of the anniversary edition, Mercedes-Maybach’s partners are also designing and creating limited special series items. One of them is the Maybach icons of Luxury that will be offering a diamond-studded fountain pen from the Maybach the Peak collection.

On the first half of 2022, the “Edition 100” will be available in the US.

“Creator Brand” Mercedes-Maybach

Even as early as a hundred years ago, Karl Maybach was already partnering with the best specialist companies to give his customers their wishes and be able to create the bodies in their style. He provided the perfect blend of technical quality with individual design and perfect craftsmanship. Each car was different. The coachbuilders are a perfect match to the chassis and engines partnered with high-quality equipment and handcrafted bodies.

Each vehicle shows the character of each customer. They created elegant and unique pieces that are perfect for connoisseurs and collectors.

The core of Maybach luxury is centered on constant innovation. To provide this, inspiration is needed, and inputs from creative partners like the early coachbuilders were welcome. For Mercedes-Maybach, ultimate luxury is the perfect blend of creativity and harmonious aesthetics between technology and individual experience.

Mercedes-Maybach relies on and respects the expertise of their partners creating a strong partnership between traditional businesses, visionaries, and manufacturers.

Philipp Schiemer added, “We see ourselves as a creator brand. Every vehicle has always been configured and manufactured with veritable artistic ambition. Customers and producers have always been creative together – we want to preserve this spirit and further strengthen it in the future.”

Exclusive Maybach for other areas of life

For the Maybach anniversary year, silver manufacturer Robbe & Berking will be offering a special series of champagne flutes. It will have the raised Maybach logo on the base, and it will also sport the Maybach “100 Years” logo engraved.

Flensburgers also made matching water or long drink tumblers for connoisseurs and lovers of classics, and they will be available to everyone, not just Mercedes-Maybach owners.

Since 2008, Robbe & Berking Classics has been creating and restoring wood sailing yachts in their own shipyard. The two companies are united in their love for travel and beauty.

Robbe & Berking Silbermanufaktur seit 1874 GmbH & Co KG Managing Director Oliver Berking shared, “The large and small masterpieces of both companies are among the best of their kind in the world. In both manufactories, unique works of timeless elegance are produced from selected materials in a perfection that arouses emotions among collectors and customers all over the world.”

There will also be matching lifestyle accessories like leather goods, exclusive travel bags, clothing, and eyewear. All the items are made in Germany to enrich their client’s lifestyle beyond the car. The collections are developed by licensing partner Maybach Icons of Luxury with the mythical brand emblem. They use sustainable materials like natural horn, titanium, precious woods, cashmere, or leather types that meet the highest environmental standards but doesn’t compromise on quality. The creative understatement of the products shows the fascination of the brand and delivers the desire for personal expression. CEO Jutta Kahlbetzer explains, “We are driven by the goal of making the exclusive Maybach feeling tangible in as many areas of life as possible.”

As part of the 100-year anniversary, the Maybach the Peak collection will be offering a limited-edition fountain pen with an 18-carat gold nib. It will have a serial number in a stylish wooden gift box. The clip of the pen will have 100 diamonds and the client will have the option of either black or white. The cap tip will be made of mother-of-pearl while the body will be lacquered in the same blue metallic shade that will be seen in the “Edition 100” vehicles.

Mercedes-Maybach in the discovery of the best possible future

Even in the fourth generation, Ulrich Schmid-Maybach, the great-grandson of Wilhelm, and the grandson of Karl Maybach, the values of the family business run true; he shows innovation, creativity, enthusiasm, and quality. Schmid-Maybach shared, “There is no greater luxury than knowing you have the best. Maybach’s self-image as the ‘ultimate inventor’ goes back to its own history of origin, and to the quality claim ‘Made in Germany.’ To that origin, to create something out of nothing, to transmit that wisdom to subsequent generations and to foster a culture of creativity and innovation.”

In 2005, Schmid-Maybach started The Maybach Foundation. It is a non-profit organization that pays homage to Wilhelm and Karl Maybach’s life work. They have built the virtual Maybach Museum, and they also foster the next generation of designers and innovators through their mentoring programs.

Gottlieb Daimler sponsored Wilhelm Maybach which is where the idea of the mentoring concept started. It helps the Maybach Foundation to focus on the gifted individuals who has shown talent in a particular field. The Maybach Foundation is active in a lot of different fields like ethics, society, technology, science, sustainability, and art.

Ulrich Schmid-Maybach stated, “Your best possible future helps others find theirs.”

The Maybach Foundation has the support of world-renowned artists like the musician Quincy Jones, writer Paulo Coelho, and painter and director Julian Schnabel as they also aim to bring and share the legacy of the founders into the future.

“For the future, we will deepen the dialogue with outstanding personalities such as artists, architects and companies. Just like them, we will not stop perfecting our products. The brand will reinvent itself once again after 100 years: sustainable, artistic, visionary. With more models – and these will also be electric,” Philipp Schiemer added.

Mercedes-Maybach: upholding traditions, embodying luxury, with visions that push technology and innovations even further.

The S680 Guard, piece of mind on wheels

This is the latest of what Mercedes-Benz calls their ‘Special Protection’ vehicles, better known as the ‘Guard’ series, based on regular Mercedes models but modified into behemoths that offer the highest protection level for civilian vehicles, the latest S680 Guard now introduces all-wheel drive into this segment for the first time.

The new S680 GUARD 4MATIC offers protection class VPAM and meets the highest ballistic test level for civilian vehicles being particularly resistant to explosive charges, the official certification by Beschussamt Ulm (ballistic testing authority) was carried out for the first time using so-called biofidelic dummies that come with bone and soft tissue-like constructions to imitate the human body particularly realistically.

With a base price of €457,100, the S680 GUARD 4MATIC is powered by the renowned M279 V12 engine from Mercedes, delivering 612 hp (450kW) and it’s the first time a GUARD model comes with all-wheel drive in the more than 90 years Mercedes-Benz has been building these Special Protection models since 1928, over that period they have perfected every aspect it takes to create a car that literally has to protect the lives of the occupants, even under attack.

On earlier GUARD versions of Mercedes-Benz cars, the required protective materials were added or integrated onto the original chassis and body of the base model, on this S680 GUARD the entire bodyshell has been developed as a GUARD-specific unit from the start to raise the iSS, the integrated protection system, to an entirely new height, this is now a self-supporting protective cell core part of the iSS, the exterior aluminum body panels are just there for looks, and to camouflage the fact this is a high-level, bullet-proof car to drive high-net-worth individuals around.

The GUARD iSS not only consists of a new protective cell, a car with this kind of added weight also requires a bespoke suspension to cope with the additional weight compared to the regular series model, this also includes modifications to the engine and transmission, so the driver can expect similar handling as he would behind the wheel of a normal S-Class Mercedes-Benz because these new GUARD models are being developed alongside the normal production models, but they also reach production level longevity.

When it comes to the glass surfaces on a GUARD model, the multi-layer glass ‘sandwich’ has to meet the highest requirements of VR10 safety classification, on the inside the glass gets a polycarbonate coating for splinter protection but still show excellent visibility, while at the same time the thick glass has been integrated in such a way that they are not noticeable at first glance, another significant advantage of the integrated protection system.

On the S680 GUARD 4MATIC you can get just about every option for the exterior and interior as you would on the regular Mercedes S-Class, with a total of more than 80 options from interior lights, integrated media systems with OLED tech to Mercedes’ First-Class rear suite … you can opt for a three-seat rear or a two-seat rear compartment, whichever the client prefers … always keeping in mind that any ‘unsafe’ options will not be available … a large panoramic sunroof is not possible for instance.

This new S680 GUARD meets the requirements of the highest civilian protection class VR10 according to the standard VPAM BRV version three (Bullet Resistant Vehicles), during testing, both the body and the windows must be able to withstand direct impacts from an assault rifle using armor-piercing ammunition, this new S-Class GUARD also meets the requirements of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Protection against blast attacks is documented by compliance with the latest version of the VPAM ERV(Explosive Resistant Vehicles) standard, the test criteria for which are not freely available. The S 680 GUARD 4MATIC was not only the very first vehicle to complete the current tests, it also achieved the top scores in all three tests (roof, floor, and side) with three out of three stars. Test result: “no damage” to dummies and indicators according to assessment scheme VPAM ERV.

The problem with highly-armored cars like this is weight, the added layers of protection add a lot of weight to the base model, for instance, the doors are reinforced on the inside, but they also carry a lot of weight from the thick glass that has to be fitted, this requires special hydraulic window lifters to cope with the heavy glass, but imagine opening the door on a slope, that would be almost impossible without electro-mechanical door actuators that actively push the door open when you pull the latch to facilitate the work of the bodyguards, and at the same time, they can keep one hand free.

Cars like the S 680 GUARD 4MATIC include a lot of special equipment bespoke-made just for them, like a fire extinguishing system with an automatic triggering function, or an emergency fresh air system that protects occupants from penetrating smoke or irritant gases, but there are also options available that aren’t listed on the normal S-Class list: including an extensive range of equipment for official authorities, such as a siren, flashing lights, and radios, as well as a panic alarm system.

Naturally, a car like this Mercedes-Benz S680 GUARD 4MATIC doesn’t roll on standard tires, this car comes with a set of Michelin PAX run-flat tires are a standard feature, even when perforated these can keep going for up to 30 kilometers to get the occupants safe and out of harms way in case of an emergency, and while the 6-Liter V12 engine boasts 612 hp and 830 Nm of torque at as low as 2,000 rpm, due to the increased weight of the GUARD version, the top speed has been electronically limited to 190 Km/h … but you can have people move out of your way with the flashing blue lights on this car.

The 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC

Mercedes has a reputation for luxury sedans, the E-class is a very nice car with a great track record, but the S-Class takes even more credit for being a top-of-the-line limousine, even in its factory form, the S-Class is a chauffeur-driven car, and many high-net-worth individuals have an S-Class in their fleet, for when the Rolls is a little over the top, but there is one step above this model from Mercedes … a Maybach.

For the 2022 model year, we will be seeing a majestic Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC sedan in U.S. dealerships, a luxury car as advanced as Mercedes can deliver, a beautiful design combined with the utmost refinement and craftmanship, offering driving comfort together with performance to satisfy just about every owner you can imagine.

This Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC will be the most powerful model in the Maybach line-up, a hand-built 6.0-Liter V12 engine with two turbos delivers 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque … even with the massive weight of this S680, acceleration to 60 mph takes only 4.4 seconds, and thanks to its 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system (31% front and 69% rear torque) she doesn’t lose traction and keeps this mammoth car stable while thundering down the road.

This is a sedan from the upper-class echelons, and that comes with active road noise compensation, just like your gaming headset, this system reduces unwanted low-frequency noises using counter-phased sound waves, the active road noise compensation is a function of the new Burmester® High-End 4D Surround Sound System.

On the road, you will recognize the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC sedan immediately from the distinctive front bumper and radiator grille, featuring bespoke Maybach lettering, when looking closer you’ll notice the seamless, illuminated door handles, and as an option, the client can select that typical Maybach two-tone paint finish, complete with probably a hand-painted dividing line, the Mercedes-Maybach paint chart offers ten different combinations.

On the inside, you’ll find hand-selected Nappa leather everywhere, including the headliner, but also on the dashboard, the armrests, around the window frames, and even on the sun visors. Naturally, the seats show the stunning, quilted stitching pattern, that returns on the two leather cushions for the rear passengers, a contrast color for the piping and stitching is available, as is a Mercedes-Maybach emblem and the scent system for the airconditioning, which comes with bespoke Maybach perfume naturally.

The rear of the front seats is finished in a designo backrest, made from wood, which looks like it was picked from a luxury yacht, or a Riva boat, very nice indeed, and a touch of luxury like none other, and just in case you are transporting someone very important, the rear doors can be opened … and closed by the touch of a button on the dashboard, or just with a hand gesture, you wave to the door, and it opens, how cool is that?

The Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC sedan is a large car, but driving her is surprisingly easy thanks to rear-wheel steering, even in narrow streets, the advantages are clear thanks to a reduced turning circle, while at speed the opposite is true thanks to a virtual lengthening of the wheelbase with this system.

It is clear the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC sedan is meant for people to be driven in, not drive themselves, and that shows with the fact the rear seats ‘detect’ a passenger, if you take place in these sumptuous fauteuils, the headrest automatically extends, you can make a gesture to open or close the sunshades, even the one inside the massive panoramic sunroof above you.

And you won’t be bored sitting in the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC sedan either, thanks to a pair of 11.6-inch display screens in front of you, not only can you access the car’s functions thanks to the MBUX High-end Rear Seat Entertainment system, but you can also watch a movie (headsets are hidden for you, so you don’t disturb the other occupants) and even browse the internet from the comfort of the rear seats.

And to really make the experience one to remember, the new Maybach comes with a refrigerator that holds a pair of silver-plated champagne flutes and your favorite bottle of bubbles, matching holders on the central console back there will hold the flutes in place, even while being driven around … it doesn’t get any better than this.

There is no official pricing released yet, but this car is intended as a direct competitor to cars like the Rolls Royce Ghost and the Bentley Flying Spur, so don’t expect the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC sedan to come at a bargain … you know what they say: ‘if you have to ask the price …’

The new BRABUS 500

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class isn’t a bad looking four-door luxury sedan, especially when you opt for the S500 model that comes with a 435 hp engine, but that doesn’t keep world-renowned BRABUS from tinkering with it to get more power and add some aerodynamic parts to this flagship model from Germany, keeping in mind BRABUS was actually voted the best and most popular tuning brand by the readers of Germany’s leading motorsport magazine: Auto Motor und Sport … for the 15th time in a row!

And while they build stunning, high-power supercars like their BRABUS ROCKET 900, not every owner is interested in the fastest, harshest riding Mercedes possible, some just want to add a touch of personality to their factory-fresh car, and that is exactly what BRABUS now offers for the S500 with their plug-and-play BRABUS B50 – 500 PowerXtra module, just integrate it into the factory electronics and you’ll get an additional 65 hp and 70 Nm of torque, the result is a total power output of 500hp.

The BRABUS B50 – 500 PowerXtra module makes the large Mercedes S500 reach 100 km/h from standstill in only 4.7 seconds, the top speed is however still limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), and there is even an option for the diesel-powered S400d, aptly called the BRABUS PowerXtra D40 performance kit, bringing the power output for this six-cylinder compression-ignition engine to a healthy 365 hp with 750 Nm of torque at as low as 2,500 rpm … this diesel takes only 5.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h.

And this is just the beginning, I’m sure BRABUS is already working on 750, 800, or even 900 hp versions for the new Mercedes S-Class range, but power and speed are really nice, but BRABUS is also known for their amazingly well designed aerodynamic add-on parts and elegantly designed custom wheels, and part of those are already available as you read this.

A newly designed BRABUS front spoiler not only looks good, but it also reduces front-axle lift while the surrounds on the side air intakes make this car look even more aggressive, add the LED side markers and we’ve got a winner, while we haven’t even discussed the new rear bumper inset yet, complete with absolutely stunning looking, black chromed tailpipes in that typical BRABUS design. A carbon-fiber rear wing is under development at the moment but will be available soon.

Forged BRABUS “PLATINUM EDITION” wheels have been custom made for the new Mercedes S-Class, these monoblock wheels are available in either 19, 20, or massive 21-inch version, the car on these photos comes with the BRABUS Monoblock M “PLATINUM EDITION” wheels, 9×21 on the front axle and size 10.5J21 at the rear with 265/35 ZR 21 and 305/30 ZR 21 tires respectively, sourced from either Continental, Pirelli, or YOKOHAMA. To get the stance just right on this large S-Class, the BRABUS Airmatic Sport Unit will lower the factory car by 25mm (1 inch) to offer both a sportier look and even more agile handling without compromising the outstanding ride comfort we all come to love from the big Mercedes model.

And the fun continues on the inside, while the factory does an amazing job on the interior of these S-Class, BRABUS lifts it to another level altogether, like a two-tone BRABUS fine leather interior created from soft and breathable leather in the contrasting colors porcelain and black. The leather treatment continues onto the dashboard and the center console. Attention to detail is shown on the pinpoint precision perforated seats and showing a stitching pattern to mimic the cube design of the center sections on the door panels. They even go as far as offering a BRABUS Signature Carbon, which was developed exclusively for the new S-Class.

Mercedes ‘Red Pig’ Sedan

As the story goes, in 1971, a small and as-of-yet-unheard-of German racing outfit named after the two founding engineers–Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach–entered into the Spa Francorchamps 24 hours race with a Mercedes-Benz SEL300 6.3 sedan affectionately…

We have only just learned about the Aston Martin Valhalla that was introduced back in 2019 already at the Geneva Motor Show, will be postponed to 2023, that’s a four year development, but that’s apparently not the worst for all those people that have signed up to buy one of these hypercars from the Gaydon carmaker.

Things might not be looking too bright for the bespoke built V6 hybrid engine that was developed to power the new Aston Martin Valhalla, and that showed similarities with the unit we’ve just seen in the new McLaren Arturo. This 3.0-Liter V6 engine would have been completely developed in-house by Aston Martin, a first since their 5.3-Liter V8 engine back in 1969, and with the addition of hybridization this engine would become the most powerful ever in an Aston Martin, which means it would have become more powerful than the 1,160 hp engine in the Valkyrie.

But 2020 has been a disastrous year for Aston Martin, losses quadrupled due to the COVID pandemic and dropping sales figures, and while they hope their DBX will continue to gather sales, for the Aston Martin Valhalla this meant a return to the drawing board, and a one-year postponement on deliveries of the 150 units limited production run.

Tobias Moers, Aston Martin’s current CEO, confirmed they have an agreement in place with Mercedes-Benz to supply the engine for their Valhalla, it will still be a hybrid model, as Aston Martin plans to have a 90% electric line up by 2030, but the in-house V6 engine that sounded so amazing back in March of 2020 will be shelved and in comes, probably, an AMG unit.

And here comes the catch … which engine will Aston Martin use, as Moers stated “everything is a reasonable cost situation” during an interview, so will they go with the massive V8, 4.0-Liter twin turbo hybrid that will be introduced in the upcoming AMG 73 models, rated at 800 hp or more … or will they go for the much smaller M139 four-cylinder engine that will power the new AMG C63 with hybrid addition putting down about 500 hp?

Mercedes actually owns 20 percent of Aston Martin thanks to a recent technical partnership between the two, and part of that deal included using a German sourced engine for the new Valhalla, and, to be honest, with a price tag of $3,000,000 for each of these Aston Martin Valhalla … as a customer I wouldn’t be too happy with a four-cylinder engine, even if they manage 600 or 700 hp … that’s still a far cry from the ‘more than 1,160 hp’ they mentioned before.

The BRABUS Invicto

When you are a high-net-worth individual, life is different compared to other people, you’ll probably live inside a large mansion with security guards and camera surveillance, and when you leave this compound, you’ll be driven around inside an armored vehicle, most likely even with one or more additional cars around you.

The BRABUS INVICTO LUXURY

You can opt for one of the Mercedes-Benz Guard versions, the world’s widest ex-factory range of special protection vehicles … or you can turn to Brabus for one of their Invicto models, a series made up of three different versions to cater to the customer’s wishes, discreet, rugged, or luxuries …

All three versions come with the ‘Invicto Shelter Cell’, a self-contained, self-supporting and bolted-down protective cell. In addition, there are further protective elements that are in part produced using a special 3D printing process and, of course, all-around extremely tough bulletproof glass.

Based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the Invicto can resist 7.62×39 caliber bullets, used in the AK-47 for instance, but also being hit with hand grenades, and even 12.5-kilogram PETN explosive charges, this certifies the Invicto per the VPAM BRV 2009 and VPAM ERV 2010 standards, all while remaining discreet, and nearly invisible from the outside.

The BRABUS INVICTO bulletproof glass

Sometimes this kind of car requires making a fast getaway when faced with intrusion, therefore the BRABUS Invicto comes with a special suspension and high-performance braking system to cope with the additional weight of the armoring, but the 20-inch Invicto wheels come with special run-flat tires.

Because of the required performance, BRABUS advises using either a Mercedes G500 or the G63 as a base for their €345,600 Invicto protection package, but it can be ordered with other gasoline engines from the G-Class model range.

The armor meets the VR6 Plus ERV standard, the same standard that protects many limousines of heads of state, to meet the requirements the doors and hatch are now fitted with new protective elements, all the glass is replaced with extra tough bulletproof material, which required an innovative structure for the frames to be developed by BRABUS.

The BRABUS INVICTO Shelter Cell

The Invicto Shelter Cell is unlike other vehicles where the armor is retrofitted, this BRABUS system is a self-contained, self-supporting, and bolted-down unit. This design makes it possible to put it into the body shell of the G-Class part by part and then assemble and fasten it. To this end, the company manufactures precise-fit, hot-rolled steel armor plates and additional protective elements made from materials such as carefully selected fabric and fiber structures as well as from ceramic and metal composite materials.

Among the many special constructive features of the “INVICTO Shelter Cell” is the fact that there is no narrowing of the door openings whatsoever. Getting in and out of the vehicle comfortably is crucial for many owners of a G-Class. In addition, the protective cell has a zero-gap design. This means that the individual components of the armor are installed without any gaps between them, which is of elementary importance for providing maximum security under small arms fire or an explosive attack. This is achieved by means of material overlaps and the so-called labyrinths.

The BRABUS INVICTO PURE

Surprisingly enough, the entire BRABUS Invicto protective armor only adds about 1,000 kg on top of the base Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, but it still required both the front and rear suspension to be completely modified by the BRABUS engineers, even the frame of the G-Wagon needed to be reinforced at key points to support the additional weight, but still be agile enough for maximum security and durability.

A high-performance braking system with vented 402-millimeter discs and six-piston brake calipers at the front as well as 380-millimeter rotors and four-piston brake calipers on the rear axle is another major factor in the outstanding active safety of the INVICTO.

BRABUS fits Invicto 9.5×20 inch wheels specifically developed for the higher wheel load rating, large 275/50 R 20 W113 high load rating tires are fitted, BRABUS even developed a new run-flat system for their Invicto, even with completely destroyed tires, this car can continue for another 50km at a speed of 50 km/h.

The BRABUS INVICTO PURE

The BRABUS INVICTO PURE

This model has been created by BRABUS for those customers that need protection, but don’t want to stand out in traffic, the Invicto Pure looks exactly like a factory original Mercedes-Benz G-class … this is protection in her purest form, both the exterior and the interior of the Invicto Pure are visually unchanged.

The BRABUS INVICTO PURE

The only visible changes are the new Invicto wheels in 20-inch, required to fit the BRABUS run-flat system, but other than that, this version is “undercover” as much as possible.

The BRABUS INVICTO MISSION

The BRABUS INVICTO MISSION

The Invicto Mission edition is not intended to have the high-net-worth individual in the rear seats, this version is made for the security guard companies that accompany that person, possibly even armed forces, or police and emergency services. Based on the Mercedes G500 or G63, the Invicto Mission includes not only the 20-inch off-road tires with the run-flat capability and a winch at the front this edition also comes with a powerful LED headlamp assembly at the front of the roof rack, flashing beacons behind the windshield, remote-controlled rotating searchlights at the rear, and even an armored escape hatch on the roof.

The BRABUS INVICTO MISSION

The original seats have been replaced by four custom bucket seats, designed in such a manner they allow the security detachment to wear protective vests inside the vehicle, five-point seatbelts keep them in place, even during high-speed, spirited driving.

The BRABUS INVICTO MISSION

But the Invicto Mission doesn’t stop there, it comes complete with a fresh air system with NBC filter for the interior, or how about an infrared package complete with night-vision together with an elaborate monitoring and navigation system, even the doors and backrests are fitted with the MOLLE system (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) to secure equipment.

The BRABUS INVICTO MISSION fresh air system

The BRABUS INVICTO LUXURY

The BRABUS INVICTO LUXURY

This is the most exclusive version in the Invicto series, based on either Mercedes G 500 or the Mercedes-AMG G 63 with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo eight-cylinder engine and 430kW / 585hp, this model offers 850 Nm of torque to offer impressive active safety, the 20-inch run-flat tires do require a limitation of the top speed to 210 Km/h.

The BRABUS INVICTO LUXURY

The Invicto Luxury also stands out, this is not the model for the owner that wants to travel unseen, incognito … BRABUS fits the WIDESTAR body on this model, optionally even with clear carbon fiber components, remember the Invicto Shelter Cell sits on the inside, which gets refined with a BRABUS interior made from the finest leather and Alcantara to suit the owner’s personal color and design preferences.

If the owner wants to have some more power to get out of any dangerous spots, he or she can opt for the BRABUS 800 engine, with an output of 588 kW / 800 hp at 6,600 rpm and a peak torque of 1,000 Nm at a low 3,600 rpm.

The BRABUS INVICTO LUXURY

It is clear BRABUS isn’t focusing on their usual customer that wants to turn a standard, factory Mercedes-AMG into a high-performance supercar with their Invicto model, this car is intended to offer the best protection possible for those that require it … but still want to travel in style.

The INVICTO special protection vehicles as per VR6 Plus ERV standard are built in small-series production at the plant of BRABUS Automotive in Bottrop, and while these three versions should already cater to the most discerning customer, BRABUS is always open for individual requests, as long as it doesn’t jeopardize the initial goal: protection and driving safety.

The POSAIDON S 63 RS 830+

For more than ten years, the downward-pointing trident has stood for unparalleled performance within the Mercedes-Benz and AMG community. This is because the specialists at POSAIDON – whose trademark is this polearm widely used in mythology – pick up where others left off a long time ago when it comes to performance enhancement.

But this raw power is rarely put on full public display by the POSAIDON engineers, who generally prefer to conceal it in a somewhat inconspicuous exterior that belies the lofty heights of performance it can actually achieve. A prime example of this is the POSAIDON S 63 RS 830+ shown here, which is based on the AMG variant of the large S-Class Coupe (C217).

POSAIDON pushed its 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine (M177DE40AL) from the factory-set 612 hp and 900 Nm to a ferocious 880 hp and 1,200 Nm. This transformation, which POSAIDON is valuing at €29,990 (US $36,322), was achieved using high performance turbochargers with ball bearings, a sport air filter, and down pipes with sport catalytic converters. Naturally, the software of the engine control unit, transmission control unit and drive train control unit (CPC) was also tweaked. So now, the two-ton POSAIDON S 63 RS 830+ goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. The top speed of this high-caliber bullet has been limited to 350 km/h to account for the tires.

But there’s more: Under the same name, POSAIDON is also offering the S 63 RS 830+ with 940 hp and 1,280 Nm, which – for the price of €52,000 (US $62,981)- goes beyond the other upgrades to include cylinder head porting, valve seat alterations and a water/methanol injection system (optionally with an individual tank). With this kind of power, it can go from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 2.8 seconds, but the max speed is still capped at 350 km/h, again to account for the tires.

And that’s not the end of the story! POSAIDON has already announced that another power stage is in the M177DE40AL pipeline, which will smash the 1,000 hp sound barrier!

There is also something a little tamer for those who want it, with the added bonus of TÜV approval: The POSAIDON S 63 RS 830, which – as the name suggests – delivers 830 hp and 1,100 Nm. This version comes with upgrade turbochargers and costs €24,000 (US $29,066) incl. TÜV certificate. Its top speed is also 350 km/h, and it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in three smooth seconds.

For more price-sensitive customers, POSAIDON is also offering a purely electronic performance upgrade: A software update for the engine control unit pushes the AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to 700 hp and 950 Nm, which – paired with modifications to the transmission control unit and drive train control unit (CPC) – accelerates the S 63 4MATIC+ Coupe from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and to a top speed of 330 km/h. The price: €4,200 (US $5,087). A TÜV certificate can also be obtained with this.

By the way: All of these POSAIDON power levels are available not just for the S Class Coupe, but also all other AMG series with the M177 engine. These are the E 63 (213), GLE 63 (167), GT 63 (X290), G 63 (463), S 63 (222) and GLS 63 (X167).
POSAIDON is also offering similar upgrades for the C 63 (205) and GLC 63 (253) as well as for all AMG GTs with the M178.

Gronos 2021 – a Mansory modified Mercedes G-Class G63

Kourosh Mansory, located in Brand, Germany, is a well-known manufacturer of exclusive cars, most of which might be designed with Far-East, or Asian customers in mind, but their workmanship is at such a level you can’t resist admiring their creations, even if they aren’t always to your exact taste.

In 2013 MANSORY revealed the Gronos, a complete vehicle conversion taking Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG and completely transforming it into a beast, called the Gronos after the god Cronos who led the twelve Titans. The interior of the original Gronos didn’t have seats anymore, MANSORY calls them thrones now, upholstered in the finest leather possible, with amazing, bespoke stitching patterns. Together with perfect carbon fiber, made in-house in MANSORY’s own autoclave.

Back in 2013 MANSORY mounted 23-inch wheels with 305/35ZR23 tires, the original V8 engine is taken apart by MANSORY and gets rebuilt, together with a custom, stainless steel exhaust system, power output was 840 hp with an electronically limited torque figure of 1,000 Nm.

But MANSORY wasn’t finished with the Gronos, they also made a ‘Black Edition’ that had a full carbon fiber body, later a Gronos Facelift was released, with a carbon fiber redesigned body, wider fenders, new front hood, new front spoiler … and still with 840 hp.

Last year MANSORY came up with two new models based on the Mercedes G-Class, the ‘Star Trooper Pickup’, which was created in collaboration with Philipp Plein, and a ‘special protection’ version that is in line with the ‘invisible armoring’ idea from MANSORY, people that can afford this kind of exclusivity need to feel safe inside their car after all.

Now it’s time to take the Gronos into 2021 with a new evolution that takes the original design and modernizes it for the current market requirements. The entire aerodynamic program from the previous Gronos has been redesigned, a new front bumper and lower spoiler, even more exclusive, wide fenders, and a new rear diffuser. Note that all MANSORY aero parts are made from carbon fiber, and they even show special ‘Forged Carbon’ details finished in high-gloss.

While the car’s exterior is finished in a stunning, dark green shade referred to as ‘British Racing Green’, the front engine cover stays unpainted to display the perfect finish of the carbon fiber it’s made of, additional cooling vents just finish the amazing look. Additional DRL, daytime running lights, complete the aggressive look of the front and let’s not forget the extra, very bright, LED added to the roof above the windshield.

The Mercedes G-Class is one of those SUV that keeps the spare tire on the outside, on a large door, on this MANSORY Gronos 2021 the cover for this spare is made from Forged Carbon naturally, what else would you expect, and it matches numerous other parts on the exterior of the 2021 edition of the Gronos.

The factory standard Mercedes G63 AMG can’t be called underpowered with a healthy 585 hp available from the turbocharged V8 engine, still, MANSORY takes it apart and modifies the ECU, adds larges turbochargers, new downpipes, and a bespoke exhaust system. After MANSORY dials in the engine, the power output is raised to an impressive 850 hp, torque goes from 850 Nm to 1,000 Nm … acceleration is now only 3.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h from standstill, and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

With all that power and torque, those massive 295/30R24 tires might need changing quicker than you think, but those forged YN.5 MANSORY wheels, finished in glossy black, are just a feast to admire, so who cares about four new tires on a car like this. Just be careful when exiting the rear of this Gronos 2021, the two massive, round exhaust pipes exit just ahead of the rear wheels, and they might be burning hot!

And that brings us to the interior, if you think the exterior of this Gronos 2021 looks impressive, just admire that brown leather interior, MANSORY calls it ‘Fawn Brown’. And when you think about some of the other MANSORY creations, like a yellow Lamborghini Urus with a bright yellow leather interior, or a blue Rolls Royce with … you guessed it, a blue leather interior … this Gronos 2021 actually looks rather timid.

And this shade of brown leather complements the British Racing Green exterior perfectly, and if you look closely, you’ll notice MANSORY didn’t leave anything untouched inside this Gronos 2021, a new steering wheel, naturally with visible carbon fiber, dark carbon fiber inlays all over the interior. And that bespoke stitching pattern is executed to perfection, complete with embroidered MANSORY logo on the seats and floor mats.

The carpet in the MANSORY Gronos 2021 is finished in black for a nice contrast, but they added finely made floor mats that match the leather on the seats, even the inner door panel of that large, rear door gets the MANSORY treatment, and a custom floor mat just had to be added to the luggage space … even the entire headliner is replaced with the finest ‘Fawn Brown’ leather, how’s that for attention to detail?

But now comes the bad news … and no, it isn’t the price, because customers for this kind of total conversion don’t even have to ask ‘how much’, they just sign a blank cheque. No, the really bad news is that MANSORY will only make 10 units of this Gronos 2021, and while the CO2 emissions are 312 g/km and fuel consumption is a combined 13,6 l/100km … I don’t think this will deter people from buying the MANSORY Gronos 2021 … heck, most of MANSORY’s customers have their own oil fields anyway.

The B45 – 450 performance upgrade from Brabus

When I first saw this Brabus B45 for the first time, the term ‘Pocket Rocket’ came to mind, this car is based on the Mercedes A-class compact hatchback model, but it packs 450 hp now thanks to a performance upgrade from Brabus. Straight from the Mercedes factory the AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ comes with 310 kW of power, but Brabus takes this up to 331 kW (450 hp) and a massive 550 Nm of torque, which is a 10% increase over the original figures.

The Brabus B45 – 450 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds (0.2 seconds faster), but what’s even more impressive is the fact Brabus does this with full TÜV approval and the exemplary three-year or 100,000-kilometer/62,000-mile BRABUS Tuning Warranty®, which is very rare in the engine tuning business altogether.

Just think about this for a second, we are looking at a 450 hp output from a turbocharged four-cylinder inside a hatchback Mercedes … only a few years ago this kind of power came from true supercars like a Ferrari F430 (2004 – 2009 with 480 hp from a V8), or the Lamborghini Gallardo that came with 500 hp (built from 2003 – 2006). But today a relatively comfortable hatchback model is getting very close to these harsh two-seater supercars with double the number of cylinders or more.

The press release stipulates: “The engine tuning comprises more than just special mapping for the A 45 S’s electronic engine management system. The conversion also includes a BRABUS PowerXtra CPC auxiliary control unit, the BRABUS BoostXtra adapter, which lets the engine produce a sporty blow-off noise like a racecar, and a special duct for the air box.”

In this case, Brabus didn’t add any aero parts or other appendages to the already potent looking Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+, but you can fit a set of adjustable lowering springs, which can bring this car down from 0mm to 30mm (1.2 inch). And you have to admit this lowered stance makes those bespoke 20 inch, monoblock Z wheels look even better. 8.5×20 inch on both axles boasting ten spokes, these black wheels with a polished lip get a set of Continental tires, 245/30ZR20 preferably.

If you really want to have your Brabus B45 – 450 look different where it matters, the interior, the Brabus upholstery shop can transform the entire cockpit of the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ to your liking. Different, high-end leather with just about any stitching pattern you like, bespoke Brabus floor mats, aluminum pedals … or how about a set of Brabus stainless steel scuff plates, complete with illuminated logo to match the 64 shades of the ambient lighting?

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ based Brabus B45 – 450 might come in a small package, but she packs a serious punch.

Mercedes-AMG Project One details revealed in private session with ‘Top Gear’

Mercedes-AMG put “Top Gear‘s” Jack Rix in a private studio with an AMG One, and let the journalist have his way with the static hypercar. Rix turned on the cameras and put on a show, divulging further particulars of Stuttgart’s crouching tiger. The 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 is built in the same British factory that builds the Formula 1 engines for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team. The motor also can also brag about a thermal efficiency of 40 percent, matching the Toyota Prius.

Road manners and emissions requirements mean that instead of the 5,000-rpm idle and 14,000-rpm redline in the F1 car, the One idles at 1,200 rpm and maxes at 11,000 rpm.

Three F1-spec electric motors contribute mojo, one at the crank, one at each front wheel. They spin up to 50,000 rpm and add 160 horsepower apiece to a total figure expected to number at least 1,050 horses. In pure EV mode the front motors do all the work, making the One a front-wheel-drive hypercar for up to 15 miles.

The bodywork’s been shaped and polished so as to aid motivation depending on application. For high-speed reasons, the front badge has been airbrushed on, and the 10-spoke wheels — in aluminum or magnesium — wear carbon inserts to reduce drag. When racing is the reason, flaps atop the front fenders stand up to increase downforce on the front axle, and the electrically-deployed rear wing deploys its wing-in-a-wing.

Check out the video for more minutiae, such as the friendlier-than-a-Valkyrie seating position, the four drive modes, and how the tires limit how much downforce AMG could extract from the rear wing.

Mercedes-AMG One won’t challenge Nurburgring record lap time

In March, Autocar reported that Mercedes-AMG had investigated challenging the outright Nürburgring lap record. Mercedes was said to have studied the fastest two laps, both set by racing driver Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956, with the intent of setting a new benchmark using the AMG Project One, which will now be called merely the AMG One. Apparently AMG believed it could be done, the hardest part being “finding the right driver.” AMG boss Tobia Moers still believes the One could win the day even after the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo obliterated the old mark by nearly a minute. But Moers quashed the attempt, telling Australian site Motoring, “Could we beat the Porsche’s ‘Ring time? We could, probably,” then adding, “I just don’t know what we’d do it for.”

Moers admits the Porsche run “was impressive,” and a One victory “would be close.” To give the One a chance at the title, engineers could rework the aero, yank out the air conditioning, and put on different tires. But Moers can’t see the point of a fully homologated production car challenging a race car that’s been upgraded beyond any legal race spec. “Theirs is a racing car that isn’t actually fit to race anywhere, in any class, anywhere. It doesn’t have any rules,” he said. At one point there had been rumor of a track-only version of the One, which might have made more sense to field, but such plans, if there really were any, were axed.

For a quick rundown of the figures, Bellof’s 35-year-old record stood at 6:11.13, set during qualifying for the Nürburgring 1000 KM race. The 956 produced 630 hp in its most powerful guise from a 2.5-liter, twin-turbo V6. The upgraded 919 Hybrid Evo put out not less than 1,160 hp from the combined efforts of its 2.0-liter V4 ICE and electric motor. Having had its aero tweaked and been stripped of its A/C, windshield wipers, and jack system, it averaged 147 miles per hour around the ‘Ring, hitting a top speed of 229 mph, to set a lap time of 5:19.55. We’re still waiting on final specs for the AMG One, but it’s expected to make more than 1,021 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and four electric motors, and post a top speed beyond 218 mph.

We can see Moers’ point. Now that the One’s been placed in the ring with the 919 Hybrid Evo, Mercedes takes the biggest risk. If the One doesn’t set a new best lap, it looks like the Mercedes-AMG hypercar lost, and explanations of the lopsided competition won’t get trumpeted as much as the mark in the L column. Every One is already sold, and has given new dimension to the brand a year before the first customer delivery.

And yet, we think the challenge is all the more worthwhile if Moers really believes the AMG One can do it. To have a fully homologated road car from the sporty division of a luxury car brand beat a dedicated, unrestricted effort from the legendary racing division of a legendary sports brand at the world’s most iconic lap-record track? We’d buy tickets to that show.

1999 Mercedes-Benz G500 SWB Europa

Based in Sante Fe, New Mexico, the custom Mercedes build team called Europa G. Wagen have a strong passion and believe that the best ATV ever created was the Mercedes Gelaendewagen. So strong is their belief that they have turned fine-tuning and tweaking this classic Merc into a lifelong body of work.

Of all Europa’s creations though, the 1999 Mercedes-Benz G500 SWB Europa is probably one of the best examples of their work and was recently put up for auction and sold.

With all Mercedes G-Class vehicles there came a V8 engine and this is still intact, bringing its 300 horsepower to the party too. The rest is of Europa’s expert devising. There is a 5-speed automatic transmission connected to the engine that drives power through each of the 4 wheels, to allow the user the chance to put this vehicle to good use in overland and offroad settings.

There are beautiful new wheels with powder-coating that come directly from the manufacturer, a shorter wheelbase, tinted windows and red painted callipers. And to top it all off, a brand new stereo featuring USB-connectivity. Since leaving its dealers, the car has racked up 91,000 miles but doesn’t look it.

Although auction closed on this recently, it is still easy to marvel at it.

1998 Mercedes AMG CLK GTR on Auction

Gearheads with will undoubtedly drool at the once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a piece of racing history as RM Sotheby’s will auction off a legendary supercar. With only 25 units ever built, the 1998 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR is definitely a rare item that will draw the attention of car collectors from all over the globe. Interested buyers are encouraged to register as soon as possible before the item goes to auction on August 25 at the Monterey 2018 event.

What makes the supercar memorable is the development period it took to complete the project from the concept sketch stage to a track-ready prototype (which was accomplished in just 128 days). The mechanics and engineers from AMG reportedly worked non-stop to deliver this beauty in time for the FIA GT Championship.  Its mid-mounted 6.9-liter 630 horsepower M120 V12 engine gives it an impressive exhaust note, according to experts.

It was specifically designed to take on the 911 GT1 from Porsche and the McLaren F1 powered by BMW’s racing technology.  Ultimately, this rivalry turned the race into an intense competition among Germany’s top automotive brands.

Interestingly enough, one of the requirements set by the FIA in order for carmakers to participate in the exclusive event was to produce 25 homologated road-ready vehicles. You can see by now what made models such as the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR one of the most highly sought-after supercars.

The one on offer is still in breathtaking condition with less than 1000 miles on the odometer and comes in a stunning silver paint scheme, a color that appears to be favored by fans of Mercedes-Benz.  Additionally, the paint, drivetrain, tool chest, and booklets are all original. A quick look at the official auction page reveals that RM Sotheby’s expects this exceptional supercar to fetch around $4,250,000 to $5,250,000 after the bidding ends.
