McLaren’s MSO created a 720S in the Gulf Oil livery

We’ve already published an article on McLaren Automotive’s MSO department, the McLaren Special Operations that offers bespoke builds to fortunate customers, but now we can admire something truly special from the artisans at MSO, a hand-painted livery on a McLaren 720S that took 20 days from start to finish … the result is a celebration between two iconic brands and the personalization possibilities from MSO: a bespoke 720S in the iconic Gulf Oil International racing colors.

McLaren and Gulf Oil go back a long time, their first partnership dates between 1968 and 1973 when we saw the Gulf livery on McLaren cars in both the F1 and the Can-Am races, a return of the two icons came in the Nineties when we saw the legendary McLaren F1 GTR race cars in the traditional light blue and orange color combination on the track, driving to victory at the 1996 BPR Global Endurance Series and in the GT1 Class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997.

In 2020 a new partnership was reached when McLaren went on to using Gulf oils exclusively for their new cars as their lubricant supplier, to celebrate this, McLaren MSO offers the opportunity to a very limited number of customers to have their supercar hand-painted in the famous Gulf Oil livery, the car presented here, a 720S model is a showcase of a close collaboration between McLaren and Gulf Oil to make sure the paint (both metallic and solid) is a perfect match to the trademark Gulf shades of light blue and bright orange.

After many tests in the spray booth, AkzoNobel, a highly regarded name when it comes to top-of-the-line automotive paints, was able to put together the perfect mixture to mimic the shades required … it still takes a highly skilled painter a total of 20 days to complete this elaborate livery on a McLaren 720S.

The Gulf Oil blue and orange not only adorn the body of the McLaren 720S, but the orange is also used on the brake calipers, that same shade is taken into the interior where we find matching orange seat belts while the rest of the interior gets both light blue and orange stitching, a stunning looking Gulf logo is embroidered on both headrests, while another Gulf logo gets painted on the side sills, so it’s clearly visible when you open the doors on this bespoke MSO build.

FOR SALE: 2019 McLaren Senna Drenched in Bespoke Options

One of the latest supercars to hit BringATrailer is an absolutely glorious 2019, McLaren Senna, finished in Liquid Silver – which happens to be a $97,566 option. It comes with only 1,900 miles on the odometer along with all original owner’s manuals, accessories, clean Carfax, and a clean Pennsylvania title. The auction is set to end on Tuesday, April 27 at 2:00 pm.

This Senna is #196 of 500 cars produced to commemorate Ayrton Senna’s success with McLaren’s Formula 1 team. It’s finished in a bespoke Senna GTR-inspired livery along with Burton Blue accents from the McLaren Special Operations team and Satin Blue tinted carbon-fiber trim.

This car features over $265,000 of specified options – making it almost one of a kind. These options include bespoke blue Alcantara seats, Satin Blue tinted carbon-fiber interior trim, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system, Burton Blue brake calipers, Gorilla Glass side panels, and an MSO Push-to-Drink system.

Not only does this McLaren feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transaxle, racing-inspired center-locking wheels, but it also comes with the creature comforts found standard in most luxury cars. Things like adjustable driving modes, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, navigation, and touchscreen infotainment.

One of the neatest features on this McLaren Senna is the underside of the front panel – it has been signed by members of the McLaren Special Operations division. You can hop in the driver’s seat of this incredible car knowing that the MSO team is with you on the ride.

MSO means bespoke in McLaren language

MSO, short for McLaren Special Operations, takes care of special requests and bespoke options on new McLaren sportscars ordered by customers worldwide, and we find a stunning trio of the now sold-out McLaren 765LT that was just delivered to their owners in Poland that all come with MSO options, considerably raising their base MSRP of €402,500 when these customers placed their order shortly after the global launch last year to make sure they could take delivery ahead of the 2021 summer track day season.

These three McLaren 765LT MSO come in some truly impressive shades, Volcano Yellow, Volcano Orange, and Paris Blue, the blue car adds multiple MSO options, includes the MSO Clubsport Pro Pack (consisting of Super-Lightweight Carbon Fibre Racing Seats, Track Brake Upgrade, and MSO Defined Satin Finish Carbon Fibre Air Vents). The Paris Blue 765LT is also the only one from this trio to come with the MSO Black Pack (front splitter, rear bumper, rear diffuser, air intakes, side skirts, and door mirror casings are all finished in black). Probably the nicest option on the exterior is the clear carbon fiber front hood and rear wing among others.

The McLaren 765LT is 80kg lighter compared to the already lightweight 720, among others thanks to special carbon fiber aerodynamics that are made by the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in the Sheffield area, a first for McLaren, and let’s not forget where the ‘LT’ stands for: ‘Longtail’, the 765LT comes with an active rear wing that allows this 1,229 kg car to reach 100 km/h in less than three seconds … 200 km/h is reached in 7 seconds, thanks to 765PS and 800 Nm.

McLaren shows off personalization options for the Speedtail

The entire McLaren Speedtail production run has been spoken for, and McLaren wants to make sure no two Speedtails are exactly the same. A wide range of personalization options is offered to the 106 clients that have put down a deposit for the upcoming “Hyper-GT,” and McLaren has now disclosed how it plans to make the cars unique. The 250-mph 1050-horsepower gasoline-hybrid cars will be available from early 2020 on, so there’s a year’s time to configure them according to one’s taste. The supercar maker has recently showed off some of its special editions, and the Speedtail configuration options follow in the same exquisite vein.

First of all, there are three style collections, which themselves have been divided into different themes depending of the customer’s needs. The main collections are called Urbane, Visionary and Dynamic: the first of them is a subdued and sophisticated setting, the second a more striking and vibrant one, and the third a more futuristic one. The Urbane trim level includes the Stratosphere theme that shows off the car in “gloss 1k visual carbon fiber,” the highlights of which are accentuated by a “contour pack” and anodized aluminum brightwork.

The Visionary trim’s Astral theme mainly features navy blue in various ways, contrasting with the car’s silver-striped orange bodywork, again complete with glossy carbon fiber but now with white gold. As for the Dynamic collection, it can be tied in with the Bloodline theme, which combines a red car with a red driver seat but with aniline passenger seats, highlighting the central throne.

There are countless ways to option the 106 cars’ surfaces and features, especially when McLaren’s MSO division is added to the table. McLaren also reminds that there are options such as electro-chromatic window tints that function as sun visors, or that one can add more carbon or white gold if desired.
