Macallan Just Unveiled a 72-Year Old Whisky That Costs $60,000

This Macallan 52 Scotch Costs As Much As A Sport Car

The Macallan has finally unveiled its latest drink, and it’s going to cost you a pretty penny. This 52-year-old bottle of scotch comes with a price tag that puts it out of reach of even the most passionate collectors out there.

At roughly more than $50,000, the Macallan 52 cost as much as, if not more than, a German sportscar. Stock is incredibly low, too. Macallan only made 250 bottles, and only a total of 42 will end up shipped in the United States. Suffice it to say that this is one of the rarest luxury scotch bottles you’ll ever find in the world.

Macallan first laid down the single-cask single-malt back in 1965. Then it let it mature in a first-fill European oak ex-Sherry cask. Bottled at 48% ABV, the whisky is said to contain notes of “rich fruit and dark chocolate fondant.” Also present are “hints of peat smoke, cinnamon, and ginger.”

Macallan whisky maker Sarah Burgess signed each individual bottle. It comes in a solid oak box with an etched face inlaid with a matte gold age statement. Here’s Burgess talking about the scotch:

“After being left to mature for 52 long years in one exceptional, hand crafted European oak Sherry seasoned cask, this wonderfully rare single malt is full of rich spicy flavours and has a beautiful ruby mahogany natural colour.”

She adds that the Macallan 52 is an excellent addition to the distillery’s classic-aged whiskies. It’s also a testament to the “harmony created through the mastery of wood and spirit.”

The Macallan 72 Years Old in Lalique

The Macallan Distillery is on a roll this year. After releasing a couple of very old, rare bottlings and opening a high-tech, $186 million facility, they’ve now announced their oldest Scotch whisky to date, the 72 Years Old in Lalique.

Set to be released this August in a limited run of 600, the special concoction arrives in a recipient that’s worthy of its exquisite contents–a unique and bespoke crystal decanter (called the Genesis Decanter) and presentation case, both inspired by the architectural complexity of The Macallan’s new brand home.

The 1940s-distilled whisky has a golden amber color, a delicate peat nose leading to a soft, aged oak smoke, and a palate that is slightly smokey with vanilla hints fading “to leave a viscous mouth coating of citrus fruits and subtle green apples.”

Woodford Reserve Straight Malt Whiskey

Famed maker of premium small batch Kentucky bourbon Woodford Reserve has just introduced its first Straight Malt Whiskey–a unique blend that contains 51% malted barley, 47% corn, and 2% rye.

With a 45.2% alcohol content, this “rebirth of the concept of malt whiskey” is not for the faint-hearted. Thanks to its high content of corn and an aging process that takes place in new charred oak barrels, the new concoction is sure to be appreciated by bourbon drinkers, while its rich and complex flavor, make it a perfect spirit to enjoy neat or on the rocks. We think it would make a tasty variation of the Old-Fashioned or Manhattan, too.

The umber-colored whiskey has tasting notes that include a nose of “soft nutty notes drizzled with light caramel,” “hints of brown spice, savory mint,” taste of “dark chocolate and caramel coated nuts,” and a “nutty and subtly sweet chocolate malt” finish. Available nationwide starting June 2018.

The Macallan 50 Years Old 2018 Release

The Macallan has announced its 50 Years Old release for 2018, an exquisite single-malt whiskey limited to just 200 bottles.

After having spent at least five decades in handcrafted European oak sherry seasoned casks from Spain, this ‘new make’ spirit is a rich and complex whiskey with a “vibrant amber”color, clocking in at ABV 44.0%.

The rare concoction presents itself with a nose of wood vanillas, ripe blackcurrants, and an earthy tone, while on the palate it offers hints of oak, fudge and toffee, black peppercorns, orange peel and figs. The finish is “a viscous mouth coating, long and slightly dry from the subtle peat notes.” Are you drooling yet?
