The Whiskey Ridge House is the definitive private lodge. You’ll be surrounded by picturesque national parkland, including Gore Range and New York Mountain. The best place to finish your novel, for sure.

The house features modern architectural elements. that said, it still blends well with its surrounding greenery quite beautifully. It incorporates elements like locally sourced beetle-kill pine and Anasazi sliver stone to amplify the countryside vibe, not suppress it. The interior amounts to 10,515 square meters and seven bedrooms, plus nine baths. The open living area is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows, offering views of the pond and the mountain peaks in the distance. Off the main house is a swimming pool and a detached glass cabana that also serves as a gym. Suppose you end up feeling a bit sick of staying inside, you can pack your hiking gear and venture forth, trotting the the nine-miles worth of trails for hiking and biking outside. If you like much chiller adventures, the Beaver Creek and Vail Villages, world-class skiing destinations, are just a stone’s throw away.

James Dean’s House, Yours For $3.9 Million

James Dean’s old Hollywood Hills house is now on the market for several million bucks. It wasn’t actually his house, though — he only lived in the downstairs suite during his days as a struggling actor; the house was owned by Hal B. Wallis, who was the former head of Warner Bros.

According to The Agency, which is listing the historic property, the home used to be one of the “entertainment hubs” of the Hollywood Hills. Once, at a party there, a casting director saw James Dean and apparently “liked his look.”

In fact, he liked James Dean so much so that less than a month later, he was cast in Rebel Without a Cause, which later became one of the actor’s most iconic films.

The cozy little Spanish-style home was built in 1927. That said, it’s recently been restored, its quaint charms now given a modern facelift. The eat-in kitchen has been updated with new features like marble countertops and Viking appliances, for instance.

It has three bedrooms, four baths, and a swimming pool to boot — 4,000 square meters all in all. Of note is the master bathroom flecked with gray tile and gold accents under the sink. Spacious dual walk-in closets also come standard.

Despite its modernities, the house retains many of its original elements, such as fireplaces, arched doorways, and exposed wood beams, giving it a uniquely nostalgic atmosphere. This house probably appeals to you on charm and sentiment alone, especially considering James Dean has historic footprints all over the place. But if you don’t care much for the actor, the house itself is still pretty rad.

Plywood Stack Coffee Table By Chris Salomone

Often the secret to great craftsmanship when it comes to making furniture isn’t so much as showing off, but learning how to hide certain elements. Hiding in a way that when onlookers finally realize what they’ve been missing this whole time, it adds a layer of discovery.

Great art is always about the process of scrutiny and the element surprise that makes that experience even sweeter. Just like this job from Chris Salomone. It’s a coffee table that, at first glance, looks like a stack of plywood sitting on some cubbies. Upon closer inspection, however, you’ll see that it’s actually hollow and has lots of storage within. The best part? It was built with just two sheets of ply. Talk about clever and resourceful. That’s the Plywood Stack Coffee Table in a sense.

Salomone cut a sheet into 36-inch long strips of plywood to create the perfect gigantic plywood illusion. He used those as cover for the hollow interior. Not only is this method cheap, but it also gives you extra storage — and your guests will never notice it’s actually a hollow piece of furniture. Unless you tell them, of course.

You’ll love the the exposed plywood edges of the Plywood Stack Coffee Table, which Salomone coated with Montana Gold. If you’re feeling  adventurous, you can totally disregard that and go to town with the color of your choice. At the end of the day, you’ll still have a luxurious-looking pallet that doesn’t cost a fortune to make and actually adds function to your home. It’s a great conversation starter, and relatively easy to create if you put in the time and effort — what’s not to like?

Skull Chair By HAROW And Okuda San Miguel

We love collaborations here at Men’s Gear, and we’re sure you’ll love this one, too: Spanish street artist Okuda San Miguel has partnered with French design studio HAROW to create a stunning new armchair in the shape of a skull. Not just any skull, but a multi-colored one made up of intricate geometric patterns.

The skull’s cavities are in black and nearly galactic in theme, accentuating the vivid hues of the rest of the chair. This simple design element is what turns it into a true masterpiece rather than a haphazard color experiment.

It’s quite astonishing that despite the chair being a skull, it doesn’t feel macabre at all. San Miguel cleverly prevented the skull chair from looking like a prop in a Guillermo del Toro film. He injected it with enough flamboyance to make it seem it’s straight out of a candy-flavored Wes Anderson flick. To be fair, though, all of Anderson’s films are candy-flavored. But suffice it to say that this chair would fit right in.

San Miguel actually used spray paint and gloss finish to make this skull chair. Doing so was a gracious nod to his origins in the street art scene. The chair itself, meanwhile, is built from reinforced fiberglass. That gave San Miguel enough flexibility with regard to whatever visual art he wanted to create. In effect, while the chair skirts the line of being a bit cartoonish, the skull’s dark hues give it a bit of an edge, preventing it from being a total caricature. San Miguel exerted exemplary balance here, and he deserves merit for making such inspired work.

Oia Luxury Boutique Hotel In Santorini

Nothing says cliffside like Santorini. That’s right — this little Greek paradise has been drawing millions of tourists for decades now. If not its picturesque views of the Aegean Sea, you’ll love the bustling municipality stacked precariously up its steep slopes. They look like beautiful fungi feeding on an organism.

But enough with the poetics. Did you know that an architectural firm called Kapsimalis Architect converted the legendary Oia Castle (an old late 19th century residence) into a luxury boutique hotel in the Oia village? And guess what? You can totally stay there!

The Oia Luxury Boutique Hotel sits below the hillside of its old medieval castle which overlooks the sea. It offers you spectacular views of sunsets, and where else but Santorini can sunset-watching be more perfect?

The architects recreated the suites and villas with modern day amenities, but took great care infusing it with Greece’s romantic past. They used local volcanic stone for the hotel’s key foundational pillars and walls, which, when combined with the castle’s coal wooden frames and brown plaster facades, balances out the light exteriors with a warm interior colur palette.

On the ground floor, you’ll find a wood-burning oven, warehouse, and a rainwater tank. There are only three rooms in the hotel, unfortunately, so you better book one quick if you want to nab a schedule. Each room has their own independent entrance and garden area, as well as lounge space. There’s also a communal lounge area for all the hotel guests to relax. You can check out more photos below.

The Hobbit Hole

This is one of the most realistic Hobbit-inspired homes we’ve ever seen, bar none. It was built by tiny-house entrepreneur Kristie Wolfe, and you’ll be glad to know that you can rent it.

The house stands above the gorgeous uplands of Orlando in central Washington and is just 288 square feet large. Make no mistake, though: this humble abode has all the necessary amenities every hobbit would ever need. J. R. R. Tolkien would be proud.

What Hobbit house would be authentic without the signature circular door? That’s included, of course. Inside, you’ll find barrel-like rooms with round entryways, porthole windows, and an oversized stone fireplace. But the best part of the interior is the views you get — with the portal wide open, you can gawk at the rolling hills and be astonished by its beauty. For a moment, you’ll feel what it’s like to be part of the world Tolkien created.

If you get sick of staying indoors, you can go outside to enjoy the little front patio, complete with a wattle fence and a rickety gate to boot. In any case, you’ll be ensconced in this ultra-private, ultra-isolated wonderland, with the birds serenading you in your quiet times, and the wind violining across the trees.

The Hobbit Hole is available for booking online, but since the demand is insanely high, you’ll have to make an advanced reservation to score a stay. Also keep in mind that if you plan on going there during winter, the snow gets pretty deep.

Le Creuset Reimagined By PDF Haus

PDF Haus, a practical product design educational institution situated in Korea, has done it again with another conceptual redesign. This time it’s for luxury cookware brand Le Creuset.

This is PDF Haus designer Hannah Han’s latest handiwork, and like her previous projects, it’s nothing short of astonishing. She has cleverly reimagined the coffee brewer while also pushing the envelope when it comes to kitchen-bound design.

She blended wood, glass, and metal components and formed it into an organized coffee tray. A tray, mind you, from which the temperature can be adjusted. She also replaced the standard coffee pot with a glass carafe that looks like it belongs in a museum. She topped it all off with three stainless steel cones, replacing the conventional paper filter. Yes, they all fit in the recessed tray snugly. You can pour water on this tray to keep the server and coffee warm, which is not only an ingenious design choice but a feat of engineering as well.

There’s a polished knob that you can adjust to make the coffee taste more sour, less sweet, or more bitter — depends on your preference. And you can dislodge the cooktop for portability purposes, and easily attach it back thanks to the built-in magnet system. It’s quite astonishing to see Le Creuset with this level of modernity as the brand is historically associated with traditional designs. Even Han herself admits as much, telling her Behance fans that she hasn’t “put Le Creuset design sources enough while trying to make it look modern.”

That being said, we love what she did anyway, and if Le Creuset has even a dollop of sanity, they have to take notice of what Han has created here.

A House To Die In

From the makers of the world’s largest underwater restaurant, a low-energy glacial restaurant, and the 9/11 museum, comes A House To Die In, a bizarre and expressionist structure in the suburbs of Oslo, Norway.

Architectural firm Snøhetta was first approached in 2011 by artist Bjarne Melgaard for this project. It’s a combination of a home and a sculpture that would honor Edvard Munch, best known for painting “The Scream.”

The design would be rooted in Melgaard’s own art, and the structure itself would also serve as his personal home and work studio. The result? A haunting yet fascinating piece of architecture. One whose inspiration, at first glance, would be difficult to pinpoint. Is it fairytale-esque? Based on science fiction? A René Magritte and horror crossover? Or a combination of all those?

It truly is hard to describe. However, that’s the point. A House To Die In escapes easy description, which is also very true of The Scream. The masterpiece boggles art enthusiasts and the general public alike to this day.

The main piece, the one that looks like a huge rock formation, is stilted by massive animal sculptures functioning as foundational columns. The surprising thing is they would be clad with burned oak that naturally erodes over time. This would apparently result in a building that “changes character throughout the years and seasons,” says Snøhetta.

Unfortunately, local Oslo authorities rejected the plans in late August. They said the land designated for the building should remain a green space. Hopefully Snøhetta and Melgaard still go through with it (albeit in some other place) despite the setback.

The Shapeshifter House

When we hear the word “shapeshifter” we usually associate it with a person or creature that can change into different shapes or forms. We don’t often hear it describe an inanimate object such as a house. Well, that’s what California-based firm OPA called the three-story family home that sits in the deserts of Reno, Nevada–the Shapeshifter House.

The slanted zinc-clad design of the property does not actually shapeshift. Instead, it seemingly blends in with its surroundings, almost making it look like an extension of the desert terrain.

The house sits on a high cliff that gives a scenic view of Reno and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is home to two art collectors and dealers that fancy art of the American West and contemporary art. Thus, it is only fitting that their house speaks of their profession.

The Shapeshifter House features angles and straight edges for a contemporary look, while white and concrete walls and angular black ceilings fill the sections to allow it to blend with the landscape. Sculpted earth mounds surround the home and some portions of the roof to help reduce solar heat gain. Wildflowers, grasses, and bushes further enhance the Western vibe of the 5,900-square feet property.

Despite its arid location, the house features luxurious amenities for a comfortable living. It has an open living room, kitchen, dining area, two car garage, and a wine cellar. The two upper floors each have a bedroom, a bathroom, and a private terrace. There is also a space for the study and art gallery.

Smart Mirror For Fitness

Fitness apps and devices have exploded in popularity in recent years, but arguably none of them have ever been able to replicate the experience of actually being in a gym. One company is trying to change that.

Mirror, as it’s creatively called, is a smart mirror that brings a live instructor right inside your own home. When turned off, it looks just like your average mirror, but switch it on and see the magic happen. Embedded inside the 22-inch-wide and 52-inch-high frame is a vertical LCD display and stereo speakers. You’ll be able to control and vagiate through the interface via a companion app on your phone.

In one demonstration, Mirror livestreamed a high-intensity interval training class, in which an instructor talked through a variety of different workouts, including squats, burpees, and lunges from a studio in New York City. The assistant following the workouts was wearing the included heart rate monitor, so her beats-per-minute was visible on screen, as well as her target heart rate zone. If you wish, you may also pair your Apple Watch for heart rate tracking. You will see the total calories burned, plus the amount of time left in the workout, and the names of the people also taking the same class.

You’ll be able to see yourself as your workout, too, since this is, well, still a mirror at its core. This was an intentional design decision, according to CEO Brynn Putnam. She says it’s really helpful to see yourself doing the workout. “Sometimes you don’t know your shoulders are hunched until you actually see it.”

There’s also an optional one-on-one training session with a certified personal trainer. You’ll be able to see each other thanks to the built-in camera and microphone, which allows your trainer to guide you through customized workouts. This costs anywhere from $40 to $75 per session.

The Mirror itself costs $1,495, and you have to pay a monthly subscription of $39. If you don’t have time to hit the gym, you might want to give Mirror a shot.

Conker Pod

In today’s world where housing and real estate only gets more expensive by the day, it becomes wishful thinking to have a home to call your own. The housing crisis only gets worse. This is why former Rolls-Royce engineer Jag Virdie created a housing solution called “Conker” living.

Virdie designed a spherical house called Conker Pod. This living accommodation measures nearly 13 feet in diameter and features amenities for simple living. It has a kitchenette, a living space with a built-in bed, and a lavatory.

Aside from its amenities, there is still a lot to like about the Conker Pod and these include its one-day installation and versatility. You can have your pod set up virtually anywhere– on your backyard, in the middle of the desert, and even in icy environments. It adapts to various terrains and holds firmly to the ground on four anchors.

Moreover, the panels are customizable according to personal preference, which makes each Conker Pod unique to its owner. It can be individually styled to suit the environment.  You can even go stylish and request for bright, bold printed panels.  Likewise, you have an option to connect several pods together to create space for a double bed, clothes storage, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower and toilet.

More importantly, the Conker Pod is eco-friendly. It uses durable aluminum and recycled plastic to create the panels. Its unique structure also allows rainwater to fall down the sphere, which you can filter and recycle. The pod also has a heat-recovery system that traps the warmth inside.  One pod costs about $27,000.

Romotow by W2 Architecture

Say goodbye to bulky caravans and say hello to the Romotow, the mobile home of the future. With a push of a button, it transforms from a simple trailer to a party site.

At first glance, the Romotow may look like your usual caravan. However, the ingenuity of New Zealand-based architectural and interior design firm W2 gave birth to an innovative concept that puts space and relaxation at the forefront.

The design of the trailer alone is a great departure from the boxy structures of typical trailers.  The interior offers more space, with partitions that distinguish between the sleeping area, kitchenette, and living space.

The main attraction of the Romotow is its functionality. Precise technical engineering transforms the living area into a hosting deck that can accommodate several people. An automated swivel extends a sheltered exterior, expanding the living space with 70 percent more floor area.

Meanwhile, a slide-out panel covers one side of the extended living area and hidden struts slide out from underneath to support the caravan firmly on the ground.

The Romotow is currently under construction in Christchurch, New Zealand. Let’s hope that we don’t have to wait too long for this cool camper to hit the retail market.

HEAdesigns EQ V2 Ti Pocket Knife

You know it’s always prudent to be prepared in case something unexpected comes up. Which is why it’s important to always have gear that can help you from a survival standpoint. You might need something to slice or cut whatever stuff that comes your way (food most likely). That’s why we love the HEAdesigns EQ V2 Ti knife—a reliable pocket tool that can likely help when you’re in a pinch.

We agree that the unusual choice of colors makes it difficult to take seriously, but if past experiences taught us one thing—what matters is durability and performance—looks are just secondary. Don’t take it the wrong way, the knife comes in shades that are unconventional yet attractive at the same time. However, those who’ve handled previous models from the brand know that it’s more than just eye-candy

The 3.5-inch blade is forged from M390 steel—recognized for its corrosion-resistance and strength. You will also notice that the flipper tab on this new model is much smaller than its predecessor. This is supposedly in line with the smaller profile intended by the manufacturer. The two-tone finish on the blade is a remarkable feature that likewise gives it an interesting profile.

Its handle is perfectly crafted from 6A/4V aircraft-grade titanium that’s at its widest closest to the bolster and tapers down to a rounded point. The sleek form of the frame seamlessly houses the shape of the blade. The compact assembly measures only 4.9-inch long and 1.1-inch wide when closed. A total of four colors are available with matching accents on the pivot, clip, and rivets.

HEAdesigns EQ V2 Ti is a limited production run with only 150 units crafted for each version and cost $349 to own one.
