2018 Asus ZenBook S

As chip makers continually improve their products, we get faster and more reliable processors. However, when performance is increased, so does power consumption. Desktop computers are ideal platforms to handle these power-hungry components, but laptops are an entirely different challenge. We’ve recently seen the arrival of models that run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoC that boast superior battery life, but the Intel-based 2018 Asus ZenBook S will run up to 20 hours on a single charge.

First of all, we would like to highlight that this device is part of the manufacturer’s lineup of premium notebooks. You get a slim and lightweight laptop that is mostly crafted from aluminum. It further adds another touch of class with its polished chamfered edges that contrast the color of the body. The desired effect is the result of a two-phase anodizing process that results in a luxurious two-tone finish.

It sports an Intel Core i7-8565U with speeds up to 4.5 GHz. You can also go for the slightly less costly configuration that comes with an Intel Core i5-8265U with a max speed of 3.9 GHz. Both chipsets reportedly draw the same 15 watts of power.

Other furnishings include a 13.3-inch 3,840 x 2,160 resolution touchscreen. The 2018 Asus ZenBook S also uses a unique hinge called the Ergolift—a unique mechanism that raises the base up at a 5.5-degree angle, which supposedly makes typing more comfortable. You can also find two Thunderbolt 3 ports, 1 USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm combo jack, and a robust MIL-STD 810G rated construction.

You either love it or hate it, but the fact remains that Chromebooks exist. Also, it won’t be going away anytime soon. Most of the time these Chrome OS-powered computers are adequate enough for simple computing needs. This is why you rarely find ones that sport a premium build quality. The 14-inch 1920 x 1280 resolution IPS touch display can fold all the way back to provide a tablet experience, while the keyboard is backlit to make typing in low-light conditions easier. Additionally, there is an EMR included that covertly stays hidden within the base.

Dell boasts that the Inspiron 14 Chromebook can manage a 15-hour battery life with typical usage. Wireless connectivity options are your standard Bluetooth and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. You will also find two USB 3.1 Type-C ports and a single USB Type-A along with a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Finally, everything is packaged into a slim aluminum frame that definitely feels premium.

2019 Acer Swift 5 Laptop

Tech expos are the best events for manufacturers to showcase their latest products in a bid to outdo the competition. Innovations and new technology normally make their debut during these shows. The 2018 IFA in Berlin has its fair share of outstanding items caught our fancy, but we direct the spotlight over to Acer for a moment to verify its latest claim. According to the Taiwan-based hardware and electronics corporation, the 2019 Acer Swift 5 is supposedly the world’s lightest 15-inch laptop.

Now that’s certainly a bold statement to make, but it seems that the manufacturer might just be telling the truth. Clocking in at around 2.2 pounds, it deservingly nudges last year’s champion off its spot—the 2.6-pound LG Gram. A quick research reveals how Acer was able to shave off some of the weight. The laptop now sports a magnesium-lithium alloy body for a lightweight and robust combination that’s resistant to flexing. Furthermore, the bezels around its display are a lot slimmer than before.

Equipped with the latest processors from Intel, you can be assured that the Acer Swift 5 can handle even the most demanding tasks. Other noteworthy features include NVMe SSD storage and 4G LTE connectivity. Availability is projected to be sometime in January 2019 with a base price of $1,100.

2018 MacBook Pro

Although its exterior looks remain the same as ever, the newly released 2018 MacBook Pro gets some much-needed performance upgrades under the hood which are sure to please power apple users–at least for a while.

Available in 13 and 15-inch models, the new machine uses what they call True-Tone technology (already found in the iPad Pro), meaning there’s an ambient light sensor inside that adjusts the screen’s color temperature for optimal viewing, depending on where you’re sitting. The keyboard has also been slightly improved–it’s now quieter.

The 15-inch model now boasts 6 cores with Intel Core i7 or i9 options, up to 4TB of storage, and up to 32GB of RAM. The 13-inch version gives you a choice between Core i5 or i7 chips, and up to 2TB SSD. Both machines pack larger batteries, but life-per-charge is unrevealed at the moment. They also come fitted with a T2 chip that enhances security and enables the hands-free “Hey Siri” command for the first time on a MacBook.
