The 7 Best Humidifiers for a More Comfortable Home

People spend a lot of time dialing in the perfect temperature for their homes, but few are worry about their home’s humidity levels. While people associate humidity with feeling hot and sticky in the summer, indoor humidity is important to your health. The ideal humidity levels are between 30 percent and 50 percent, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.. For reference, the humidity levels in the Sahara Desert are around 25 percent, and most homes are anywhere between 5 percent and 20 percent. Too-dry air will lead to dry, cracked skin and will open the door to various sinus and respiratory issues. Even in the summer, running an air conditioner will zap humidity from the air, and a humidifier will put back the right amount. And if you’re noticing a shortage of humidifiers, it could be the fact that increased humidity can slow down COVID-19 infection rates and ease symptoms of the virus. We got our hands on a mess of humidifiers, and these are the seven of the best ones.

Best Overall Humidifier: Levoit LV600HH Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier

Levoit amazon.com

$89.99

The Levoit LV600HH isn’t the sleekest device, but it makes up for its sterile looks with an incredibly robust well of features and options. You can toggle between ultrasonic cool and warm mists, and with its spacious 1.5 gallon water tank, the Levoit 600 can be used for up to 60 hours without having to refill the reservoir. A built-in humidistat keeps track of the humidity in the air, and it will help the humidifier get up to the desired levels then shut off so you don’t end up with, what our tester calls, “tropical level of aerial moistness.” The humidifier is perfect for large rooms, and you shouldn’t have to worry about over humidifying small rooms thanks to the aforementioned built-in humidistat.

Best Upgrade Humidifier: Homedics TotalComfort Deluxe Ultrasonic Humidifier

Homedics macys.com

$119.99

Instead of a bulky, space-hogging body, the Homedics TotalComfort Deluxe Ultrasonic Humidifier is shaped like a tower so it eats up less precious real estate. The 360-degree nozzle spews cool or warm mist throughout my home and actually makes me feel like my body is slowly taking in more moisture. Like the Levoit 600, the water tank has a 1.5-gallon capacity, except Homedics claims it can last for up to 70 hours of continuous use. Set your target humidity levels, and let the Homedics humidifier fill your home with some sweet, sweet humidity.

Best Budget Humidifier: Pure Enrichment MistAire Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier

Pure Enrichment amazon.com

$39.99

As our tester says, “As far as materials go, I’ll say that it was very clearly a $40 humidifier.” On the operating front, it works. It’s a tiny device and will only work if you don’t try to push it past its limit (or put it in a room above over 250 square feet). Our reviewer says he could feel the increase in humidity, and his dog’s skin did become less dry. Operating it is easy, since there’s only one button, and you only really need to toggle between high and low speeds. The tank shape makes it a bit annoying to clean, but it’s not impossible.

READ THE STORY

Honeywell HEV685W

Honeywell amazon.com

$130.00

This humidifier is huge. It has two water tanks, and each holds 1.5 gallons of water. If size isn’t an issue, this is a damn good humidifier (if you can find it in stock). Our tester found that in less than an hour, the full-moisture setting brought his bedroom up from 25 percent humidity to the high 30s or low 40s — after a few hours, he’s hitting the high 40s, low 50s. The two tanks are both a blessing and a curse. You can fill up less often, but you also have two tanks to clean and refill. Luckily cleaning the tanks is easy. Our tester likes especially likes their sink-friendly flat-bottom, top-fill design and ergonomic grips.

Honeywell Designer Series Cool Mist Humidifier

Honeywell amazon.com

$65.13

Humidifiers are not the nicest home appliance. Honeywell clearly knew this when it launched the Designer Series line of humidifiers, which our tester says looks like a Sonos speaker (if you’re into that). The cylindrical shape gives the unit a smaller footprint, which was a bonus for our studio-living tester. A huge plus is there is no fan noise, and a lack of an evaporative filter that must be made wet was nice to not have to deal with. Cleaning is relatively simple, too, though dragging the cord to the sink to the clean the whole unit is a minor pain point. In short, the Designer Series looks good, it works, but as our tester notes “humidifiers on the whole are kind of a pain in the ass to deal with.”

Levoit 200

Levoit amazon.com

$39.99

The first thing our tested noticed about the Levoit 200 was its Apple-like design, and it does look like an iMac G3. The compact humidifier is simple and straightforward, with just a single button for operating. The gallon-sized tank can run for 40 hours on low and 10 hours on high. Our tester is a big fan of the Levoit 200, and notes that he no longer wakes up with cracked lips and a dry nose. It’s also very quiet, and our tester can barely notice its gentle hum even when it’s right next to his ear. with it just a foot or two from my ear. One drawback is its smaller capacity, but the tank is fairly easy to clean.

For $20 more, there’s a smart version of this device if you want to have remote control over the device.

Vornado EV100 Evaporative Humidifier

Vornado allergybuyersclub.com

$79.99

The Vornado EV100 has a futuristic look to it, and offers a little more control than most humidifiers on this list. Dial in your desired humidity levels (but only between 40 percent and 60 percent) and let this thing run freely on high, low or auto. Like Vornado’s other products, the humidifier Vortex Action technology to better circulate air throughout the room. The tank is easy to carry and clean, and because it’s clear, it’s easy to tell when it’s time to top up.

Seth Rogen Is Launching a Weed Brand, and Life Is Starting to Make Sense Again

2021 is here at least and the, ahem, high-minded lifestyle is getting a makeover — with none other than Seth Rogen leading the way. With his new (to the U.S. at least) marijuana brand, Houseplant, Rogen is bringing weed from out of your parent’s basement — and into the forefront of good home design.

Founded in 2019 by Rogen and longtime creative partner Evan Goldberg, Houseplant launched in Canada and quickly became one of the country’s leading marijuana brands. Now in 2021, the American weed smoker can toke on Houseplant’s three cannabis strains and enjoy the brand’s design-first smoking accessories.

gear
The Block Lighter sits on your table and doubles as an ashtray.

Speaking of the latter: many have been taken by Rogen’s foray into pottery, and now through Houseplant, you can (sort of) buy his work. Houseplant’s first round of home goods includes an ashtray set that looks like the one Rogen made by hand and featured on his Instagram; while the version you can take home was designed by Rogen, however, it was made overseas.

Also included in the brand’s house goods lineup is a tabletop lighter for those who too often misplace their light. And if you really want to elevate your smoking to an experience, Houseplant also has a vinyl set to complement your toking.

Rogen and Goldberg are also very aware of what it means for them to start a weed brand in a world where Black people are more likely to be arrested for marijuana-related charges than white people.

house plant
Houseplant’s Ashtray Set includes an ashtray with a notch to hold your joint and a complementing vase. The saucer can be used as a base for the ashtray or as a separate catch-all tray.

“Houseplant was born out of our love and passion for cannabis, design and art,” Rogen said in a press release. “Evan and I also recognize that our lifelong dream of starting a cannabis lifestyle brand like Houseplant comes with a commitment to changing the unjust and racist cannabis laws that still exist in today’s society. We understand our responsibility to help right those wrongs and are dedicated to creating a more diverse, equitable cannabis industry.”

In an interview with LA Weekly, Houseplant CEO Michael Mohr says the brand has an in-house mentee program and is currently helping two California-based entrepreneurs get through the hurdles of starting their own weed brand.

Houseplant may be helping to usher a new era for weed and the pot-smoking way of life, but it’s not the only brand that’s making marijuana for design-conscious millennials. Mister Green, based out of California, sells an assortment of weed-adjacent home goods alongside apparel you’d find in a streetwear blog; Old Pal is along the same lines, selling what it calls “elevated goods and gear” for people who like to smoke; and Summerland makes bongs and pipes that look like they belong in the Museum of Modern Art and not some tacky head shop.

gear

Courtesy

Rogen has been making his rounds on the press junket to promote Houseplant, and his appearance last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live had a lot of people pretty sure that Rogen was high on his own supply.

“This is the highest I’ve seen Seth on a talk show for a while ???,” one YouTube commenter wrote.

“This is so fun to watch lol whatever he’s smoking, I want it hahaha,” someone else posted.

If that’s not good marketing for your weed brand, I don’t know what is.

Snow Days Pizza Bites

Pizza bites, the ultimate drunk food, lazy dinner meal and snow day snack. The latter is the main reason why Jason Karp launched the brand Snow Days, an homage to wolfing down pizza bites when the snow kept him home from school. Karp, who cofounded the snack brand Hu, made Snow Days’ pizza bites to taste better than the ones you used to eat, and they’re made better, too. The bites are gluten free as the shells are made of cassava. The tomato sauce also hides a garden’s worth of vegetables — like carrots, spinach and onions — that doesn’t make you feel like you’re downing a green juice. Snow days may be a thing of the past for most, but Snow Days is here to stay.

Plant Owners, You Need Some Sticky Gnat Traps

My indoor plant obsession led to a war between gnats and myself over who lives in this apartment. With Garsum sticky traps, I’m winning.

Like so many others during the start of the pandemic, I got bit by the plant-buying bug. I went from zero indoor plants to about a dozen within a couple months. Then the gnats came.

Gnats are a common downside of owning houseplants. The little pests look like miniature mosquitoes, but thankfully don’t bite. They are, however, still incredibly annoying and enjoy taking laps around my head, like a taunt. Trying to squish one in the air is about as easy as trying to catch a speck of floating dust. Gnats are drawn to moisture and decaying organic matter. The initiated plant parent, as I was, tend to overwater their plants, providing the perfect breeding ground for more gnats since the little buggers love to lay their eggs in damp soil. If you see one gnat, you’re in for a home full of nuisances.

sticky plant traps

Tyler Chin

The internet gave me two solutions for combatting gnat infestations: gnat-killing sprays or gnat-trapping stickies. Using sprays on my plants freaked me out, so I went with a 12-pack of traps from a brand called Garsum, which specializes in natural insect control.

sticky plant traps

Tyler Chin

Garsum’s traps come in what the brand calls “cute designs”— the sun or a butterfly — that try as hard as they can to detract from the fact that your planter is also home to a gnat killer. The double-sided traps are easy to get into soil, and because they’re waterproof, the traps are good for as long as there’s space to catch more gnats. Since I’ve been using the Garsum traps, I’ve noticed a significant decrease in the number of times I’ve swatted at a gnat whizzing by my head. It’s also less annoying now because I know one my traps will take care of the gnat sooner or later.

Our Place Tahdig Trio

Our Place just added a new accessory for its Always Pan, and it’s one that celebrates a special holiday in Iranian culture. Nowruz, which starts on March 21, marks the start of the spring equinox. One food that is inherently tied to the occasion is tahdig, or “scorched rice,” for the thin crunchy bottom the rice gets from the way it’s cooked. Our Place founder Shiza Shahid, who is Pakistani, and husband Amir Tehrani, who is Iranian, wanted to celebrate tahdig by releasing the Tahdig Trio. It includes the Noosh-e-Joon platter, a ceramic dish that fits atop the Always Pan, and helps to achieve the 180° flip required to get perfectly shaped and browned tahdig; a damkoni, which is a cotton cloth that slips over the pan’s lid to soak up moisture; and saffron, the main ingredient in tahdig and most Nowruz dishes.

Roomba Been Acting Drunk? iRobot Says It Won’t Be Sober for Weeks

Go home Roomba, you’re drunk. That unlikely phrase has probably escaped from more than a few lips in recent weeks, after a software update from Roomba maker iRobot that left some users reporting that their i7 and s9 models have been acting as though they slurped up a bottle of Maker’s Mark. And while the brand is aware of the issue, they say the solve is still a few weeks out.

Details and reporting of the malfunctioning Roomba vacs were first reported by The Verge. According to the news site, the latest 3.12.8 firmware update has been causing to act, as many social media users call it, “drunk.” Issues include mounting complaints, failure to empty its trash, “endless spinning,” room map erasure and general navigation issues.

Even in one Reddit user’s incredibly tidy room, an afflicted Roomba i7+ reportedly has trouble moving in a straight line. It gets confused about its location and wanders around aimlessly — in other words, typical drunken behavior. As one Twitter user so accurately describes, “My Roomba acts like a drunk person trying to play it cool.” (That said, it’s unclear if their Roomba was affected by the buggy software update.)

In a statement to USA Today, iRobot says it’s been working with users to “roll their robot’s software back,” and are “also implementing an update to ensure any similar issues are avoided moving forward.” Until iRobot finds a fix for its Roomba models, may we suggest vacuuming by hand?

Is This the Smartest Air Purifier on the Market?

Between fears over coronavirus and being cooped up at home practically 24/7, air purifiers have been a hot ticket item in 2020, continuing into the new year. Coway and Blueair are stalwarts in the category, but Mila, which started as a Kickstarter project, is giving the legacy brands a run for their money.

Mila made its Kickstarter debut in late 2019, and there was no way the brand would know how badly the population would be itching for a unit in the near future. Since its first shipments of the air purifier in June 2020, the brand sold out of two production runs. And with an inaugural product that no one could test out yet, shoppers had to reply on the brand’s lofty claims about its product’s effectiveness. From its promise of offering unparalleled information on your indoor air quality to the basic premise of it working or not, Mila had a lot to uphold. I took Mila for a test run, and this is how it went.

Air purifiers come with a set of terms and phrases that can make shopping for a unit daunting. Mila understands this struggle, and while it doesn’t simplify the science of air purifiers, it does make it easy for people to understand just what the heck is going on with their air quality. Most judge an air purifier by its clean-air delivery rating, or CADR, which is the measurement of an air purifier’s effectiveness by noting the volume of clean air produced per minute based on the space of a room. The higher the number, the better, and Mila clocks in at 447 for rooms up to 1,000 square feet, an impressive feat.

air purifier in room next to chair and plant

Mila

Mila’s greatest asset is that you can set your device up (fairly quickly, I might add) and have it working in the background, making sure your indoor air quality is always at its best. After a quick calibration and app synchronization, Mila is ready to go in either manual or auto mode. In manual, you can set your target air quality index (the lower the better), or AQI, and it’ll tell you how long it will take to get there. Auto mode gives Mila full control and you can essentially leave it running without having to worry about making adjustments. Mila tracks more than AQI. It also has sensors to keep track of the bad stuff in the air, such as particulates and volatile organic compounds (commonly referred to as VOCs) as well as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Most air purifiers feature one type of filter for its unit, but Mila offers seven, each with a playful name that clues you into what the filter is tailored for. What’s important to note is that they’re all True HEPA filters — which remove 99.97 percent of particulates measuring .3 micron in diameter — and feature various carbon filters that are either multi-use or adept at targeting at specific concerns. I’m currently using the Basic Breather filter, and even as the base-level filter, it’s been working well.

Mila

The air purifier contains a host of features that make this a thoughtful device for everyday living. A sleep mode allows users to set their daily bedtime so Mila knows when to quiet down, and there’s even a white noise mode to assist with sleeping. Besides keeping track of air quality, Mila keeps track of you, but not in a creepy way. A motion sensor can keep track of when you enter a room so it quiets down, and if you get close enough, it’ll light up the display panel.

What’s Not As Good

As smart as Mila is, there’s a question as to why the unit operates with a manual on/off switch. Because of this, you can’t turn power on or turn off the device remotely. Also, the air purifier does not work with voice assistants, which is odd for a smart device.

Mila is adept at purifying various size rooms, but because it does lean on the larger side — 11.8 inches by 15.5 inches — it does take up a considerable amount of space in a small room. In those instances a smaller model would better serve a small room. Subjectively, Mila looks good and not like a sterile piece of medical equipment, nor does it look or feel like cheap plastic. If you suffer from trypophobia, or the discomfort of seeing tightly packed clusters of holes, bumps or patterns, Mila may be a trigger. As someone who does have trypohobia, however, Mila does not induce the same visceral reaction I’ve had when looking at other triggers.

The cheapest filter that Mila offers is $59, and a subscription service sends you a fresh filter every six months. Having a washable filter would have been nice to help cut down on costs, but then there’s the whole issue of having to wash out a grimy filter every so often.

Alternatives

Any air purifier with smart capabilities is a rival to the Mila air purifier. The Coway Airmega AP-1512HHS ($299) and the Dyson TP04 ($550) both have similar app functionalities, and offer a wealth of information, but neither is as in-depth or offers as many features as Mila and its app. Mila has an exceptionally high CADR rating that rivals those of large-room units that cost hundreds of dollars more, notably the Coway Airmega 400 ($649) and Coway Airmega 400S ($749), the model that works with the Coway app. The plethora of filters that Mila offers means that the one unit can be tailored to address different air-quality worries without having to buy multiple units that specialize in one area of interest.

Verdict

Whether you care about getting into the minutiae of your indoor air quality or not, Mila is an excellent air purifier. It’s priced competitively when compared to pricier models from brands such as Coway and Dyson, and the plethora of info you get from the unit itself and the app ensures you that the thing actually works. Mila also cares about longevity. Constant firmware and app updates will mean your device continues to work day after day. Signing up for a filter subscription will be a godsend because Mila is truly a set-it-and-forget-it type of air purifier; you might forget it’s there, but the brand will make sure you always get a fresh filter every six months. Basically, Mila stays smart so you don’t have to.

Boozy Canned Cocktails to Beat Winter Blues and 6 More Home and Design Releases

Welcome to Window Shopping, a weekly exercise in lusting over home products we want in our homes right the hell now. This week: a very limited run of Eames Lounge Chairs, the best olive oil you’ll ever buy and more.

Vervet Canned Cocktails

The advent of canned cocktails has made it easier to get bar-worthy cocktails at home without having to own a full-on bar. And with the latest brand of canned cocktails, Vervet, co-founder (and former bartender) Hope Ewing is bringing bartender-made cocktails into homes across America. Each cocktail in Vervet’s lineup — Angelicano, Pale Mary, Sundowner and Tiki Tea — is made entirely of Vervet-made products from the bitters and vermouth to the interesting stuff like oolong tea and tomato water. When coming up with the canned cocktails, Ewing based the recipes on a 10-ounce highball made of two ounces of 80-proof alcohol. She found the higher ABV helped to give the drinks more of a cook, and they just tasted better. Vervet ships nationwide to 41 states (sorry Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Vermont), and they’ll be sure to kick the current winter blues aside.

The black-to-white gradient is meant to pay homage to New York City, from the asphalt to the way the the buildings and concrete play off each other on a foggy day. Can’t drop ten grand on a chair? There’s a tee to accompany the limited-edition chairs that might be more wallet friendly at $60. The longe-sleeve shirt makes reference to a 1953 short film produced by the Eamses for Georgia’s Department of Arts.

Project Solar Makes Clean Energy Look Easy

Talking Points:

Project Solar

If you’re still happily dependent on coal, oil or other fossil fuels to power your home, then you’re starting to run the risk of becoming a fossil yourself. Solar energy is obviously nothing new — just ask something green and growing — but converting your roof into an energy-harnessing appliance is pretty new by comparison, and while that process can be intimidating to the armchair handyman, Project Solar is a brand committed to making that process easy and accessible to everyone. Not only is Project Solar the most affordable solar option in the United States, but it’s also one of the easiest options for DIY installation, as well as one of the most aesthetically pleasing solar panel-providers around. Find out more about Project Solar below.

Project Solar

Project Solar

Solar For $1/Watt

Project Solar’s digitally-focused approach cuts out the middlemen, reducing costs and allowing you to go solar for less than the national average (by 66 percent when you install it yourself or by 50 percent for a full-service install). Best of all, it does so with tier-one equipment backed by a 25-year warranty.

Easy DIY Install

Project Solar’s guided self-installation process is so easy, calling it “DIY” is almost misleading. The brand handles site design, engineering and city permits and offers live video chats during the installation process should you have any questions. Project Solar even sends an electrician for the final hook up so that you never have to deal with live wires. Plus, you can manage it all through Project Solar’s app.

Perfect Panels

If the thought of tacky solar panels turning your home into an eyesore is the last thing preventing you from making the switch, Project Solar has you in mind. The brand uses aesthetically pleasing black-on-black panels with Enphase microinverters for improved efficiency and Iron Ridge racking for easy, watertight roof mounting.
