The 9 Best Pillows to Sleep Better Tonight and Every Night

No feeling is more satisfying than laying your head on your pillow for a good night’s rest. The problem with rounding up a bunch of the “best pillows” is that not everyone will love the same kind of pillow. Your pillow preference will depend on more factors than we can count. Whether you’re a side sleeper, back sleeper or stomach sleeper or something in between will dictate the best pillow for you so you don’t wake up with a sore neck. Softness and firmness levels also play an important part in choosing the right pillow for you. Some would prefer their heads sink in like quicksand, while others would prefer to sleep on something more brick-like.

From crowd-pleasing adjustable pillows to ones that are just really comfortable to sleep on no matter your sleep habits, these are our picks for the best pillows of 2021.

More Great Pillows

    The Short List

    Coop Eden Pillow

    Courtesy

    Eden Pillow

    Coop Home Goods amazon.com

    $59.69

Adjustable pillows are the future of all pillows. They’re practically a one-size-fits-all option for someone who literally has no idea what kind of pillow they want. Coop’s Eden is one of the best on the market. The pillow is filled with shredded memory foam that you can remove or add (a pillow comes with a half-pound of the stuff) until you hit your desired firmness. Out of the box, the Eden is plush and thick, so adding more of the additional shredded memory foam feels like it could be a bit of overkill (and it might make it hard to stuff the pillow into a pillowcase). Because the memory foam is shredded, it allows it to better contour to your head for a more tailored fit. The outer cover, derived from bamboo, of the pillow is cool and breathable, as well as machine washable.

    Sleep Number Ultimate Comfortfit Pillow

    Courtesy

    Ultimate Comfortfit Pillow

    Sleep Number sleepnumber.com

    $130.00

A $130 is something to balk at until you realize it offers some of the best sleep you’ve ever had. Many adjustable-fill pillows give you the option to remove shredded memory foam straight out of the pillow. The Sleep Number Ultimate Comfortfit pillow instead uses three layers of sealed fill, which takes away the mess associated with other adjustable pillows. Our tester notes that “with the addition of down alternative complementing the shredded foam, the pillow is softer than [his] previous pillow, which used shredded foam exclusively.” He found it to be soft and supportive, and recommended it for those who don’t know what kind of pillow they want. As Sleep Number recommends, use one to two inserts if you’re a stomach sleeper, and two to three inserts if you’re a back or slide sleeper.

    Brooklinen Down Pillow

    Courtesy

    Down Pillow

    Brooklinen brooklinen.com

    $69.00

Brooklinen’s down pillow is available in three firmness levels: plush, mid-plush and firm. Each option comes with its own fill designation whether it’s completely filled with soft clusters of down or mixed with straight-up feathers for support. It has a hotel-quality plushness to it with enough give so it doesn’t feel like you’re sleeping on a block. It’s also made in Canada, which has nothing to do with the quality of the pillow, but could be a bonus for those looking to shop Canadian. It’s not machine washable, which is a bit of a downer, but you can dry clean (not recommended) and spot clean the pillow.

    More Great Pillows

    Purple Pillow

    Courtesy

    The Purple Pillow

    Purple purple.com

    $109.00

Like its innovative mattresses, Purple’s pillow utilizes the same funky gridded interior that makes it great for hot sleepers. Our tester was immediately taken by how cooling the pillow is thanks to its design. And if it wasn’t cooling enough already, the cover is made of mesh for even better air circulation. The pillow will always retain its shape, so there’s no need for fluffing every night, or ever at all really. Purple’s pillow also includes “boosters,” which sleepers can insert into the outer cover to get the perfect height for them. One thing our tester made an effort to point out is the pillow is a bit heavy, making it a dangerous weapon in a pillow fight.

    Nest The Easy Breather Pillow

    Courtesy

    The Easy Breather Pillow

    Nest nestbedding.com

    $89.10

Like the Coop Eden pillow, Nest’s The Easy Breather is filled with shredded memory foam, which makes it great in all the same reasons the Eden is great. From its CertiPUR-US-certified foam fill to its eco-friendly Tencel blended cover, the pillow wants to be as good for the earth as it is for your sleep. While most pillows come in just standard, queen, and king sizes, Nest makes its pillow available in an additional junior and side sleeper sizes, the latter of which is notched in the center to accommodate your shoulder.

    Avocado Green Pillow

    Courtesy

    Green Pillow

    Avocado avocadogreenmattress.com

    $89.00

Avocado’s whole brand ethos is about being green, so it makes sense its pillows are equally eco-friendly whether they’re organic or sustainably sourced. Another adjustable option, the Green pillow uses shredded latex ribbons and kapok fiber, a down alternative that’s softer, lighter and hypoallergenic. The interior is a bit messier than other adjustable pillows because it’s quite fibrous, but as a stuffing, it feels remarkable.

    Pluto Pillow

    Courtesy

    Pluto Pillow

    Pluto Pillow plutopillow.com

    $95.00

Pluto is literally made for you. No, really — you fill out a quiz on the website, and Pluto will run your answers through an algorithm to build a pillow with your specifications in mind. Depending on what you answer, the pillow will vary in height, density and cooling properties. While most pillows will let you choose from maybe one or two options from your pillow, Pluto offers over 35 variations, surely to meet your fickle sleeping needs. And if Pluto doesn’t nail the pillow on the first try, you have 100 days to let them remake it.

    Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow

    Courtesy

    Custom Comfort Pillows

    Authenticity50 authenticity50.com

    $69.00

Authenticity50 is one of our favorite sleep brands, and not just because its products are made in the US. The Custom Comfort pillows, named because they’re adjustable with shredded memory foam and microfiber, are comfortable to sleep on and offer great head and neck support. We like that the outer cover is washable, and there’s an inner liner to contain all of the fill so you can wash your pillow often, something you really should be doing more often. These pillows are always coming in and out of stock because of their popularity, so be sure to scoop some up before they’re sold out again.

    Wavy Pillow

    Courtesy

    Swell Pillow

    Wavy sleepwavy.com

    $79.00

Wavy is a new type of pillow that’s made of a gridded memory foam that’s — get this — completely machine washable. While we praise pillows that offer outer covers that are machine washable, you can throw Wavy into the washer and dryer, making it one of the cleanest pillows we could find. The memory foam is porous that lets air completely flow through — for breathability — and water — for machine washability. Wavy is a medium firmness pillow, which was our tester’s preferred firmness level. She praised the pillow’s support and lack of sinkage, as well as its ability to mold to her head. Her only qualm was the pillow’s smell out of the box, which took a couple days to dissipate. (Wavy also sells laundry detergents, which can also be used as shampoos or body washes, meant to infuse its pillows with calming aromas.)

7 Dirt-Cheap Air Purifiers Because Everyone Deserves Clean Air

For a minute, getting an air purifier was like winning the lottery. All the top-rated options were out of stock, and those budget ones made some people hesitant as to why they were still available. Thankfully, a number of under-$150 air purifiers are worth the money and some of the brands that make those best-of lists also offer some cheaper units for those on a budget. These won’t clean out your whole home, but they are good for targeted air purifying in small rooms. From a $55 air purifier from Ikea to one of the nicest budget units we’ve tested, these are the best cheap air purifiers.

Partu BS-03 Air Purifier

Courtesy

Partu BS-03

Partu amazon.com

$59.99

$49.99 (17% off)

For $50, you can’t go wrong with Partu’s BS-03, which offers optimal air purifying in rooms up to 107 square feet. The tiny unit has three stages of filtration and three fan speeds, though the highest option is a bit noisy. However, once you’ve had it on high for a while, you can easily kick it back dow to a slower fan speed, which is much quieter.

Ikea Fornuftig Air Purifier

Courtesy

Fornuftig

Ikea ikea.com

$54.99

Ikea’s $55 air purifier seems too good to be true; not only does it look really good, but it also works. It’s kitted with a HEPA-12 filter, which blocks 99.95 percent of particles 2.5 microns or larger, as well as an odor-fighting filter. While most air purifiers will eat through your wallet because of expensive filters, the Fornuftig’s replacements are $10 for the HEPA filter and $5 for the carbon filter. One of the best parts of the air purifier is that you can hang it on the wall, because Ikea knows space efficiency is important.

Honeywell HPA100

Courtesy

Honeywell HPA100

Honeywell amazon.com

$139.99

$99.99 (29% off)

What the HPA100 lacks in looks, it makes up for in ability. It can complete five air changes in an hour in rooms up to 155 square feet. Its CADR ratings are 100 for smoke and pollen and 106 for dust. It offers four cleaning modes — germ, allergen, general clean and turbo — plus a pre-filter and HEPA filter (no carbon filtration here). The HPA100 is about double the price of the cheaper options on the list, but it adds a few user-friendly touches like an auto-off timer, a control panel dimmer and filter replacement indicator.

Levoit Core 300

Courtesy

Levoit Core 300

Levoit amazon.com

$99.99

Triple filtration combined with really good CADR ratings (145 for pollen, 140 for dust and 141 for smoke) with an above-average coverage area (215 square feet) makes us wonder how the Core 300 is not more expensive. Levoit makes a number of excellent air purifiers, and this unit is a great entry-level product.

TaoTronics TT-AP005

Courtesy

TaoTronics TT-AP005

TaoTronics amazon.com

$109.99

$98.99 (10% off)

If you want to make sure your air purifier is even doing anything, the TaoTronics TT-AP005 gives real-time feedback on your room’s air quality. An easy-to-read color-coded system lets you know when your room is clean and when it’s time to kick the unit into overdrive — except you don’t manually need to do that because of its auto mode, a huge plus considering most units in this price range lack that capability. In rooms up to 323 square feet, its CADR ratings are 250 across the board — an excellent feat for a $100 air purifier.

Blueair 411

Courtesy

Blueair 411

Blueair amazon.com

$119.89

Blueair air purifiers can get ridiculously expensive, but its 411 keeps the price approachable while bringing Blueair’s air-cleaning technology found in higher-end units to this budget pick. It’s notably nicer than a lot of other air purifiers, which can look more suited to sitting in a hospital than a home, which is already a pro. Combine its looks with its CADR ratings of 120 for pollen and dust and 105 for smoke, and you have yourself a great small-room air purifier.

Coway Airmega 150

Courtesy

Coway Airmega 150

Coway amazon.com

$142.99

Coway may lack the name recognition of a brand like Dyson, but the Korean brand is making some of the best air purifiers around. Its Airmega AP-1512HHS is our pick for overall best air purifier, and its recently released Airmega 150 is the brand’s best-looking model. Its CADR rating in rooms up to 214 square feet are 138 for pollen, 161 for dust and 219 for smoke. And did we mention it looks good?

Thinking of Starting a Garden? Here’s What You Need

New (and old) hobbies have been a mainstay throughout the pandemic. Everyone has been hoarding sourdough starter or jogging around the neighborhood for the first time in years. One hobby we’ve been, ahem, digging is one of the more calming activities one can do around the home: gardening.

We’re not talking about zen gardens — although, that sounds pretty amazing, too — we are talking about good old-fashioned horticulture. Starting a garden, no matter how big or small (or even indoors) is a rewarding and often peaceful venture. There is something about working with your hands that feels right; in the end, we all just want to play in the dirt.

If you’ve found yourself staring out at your yard, or even at the empty space below your windowsills, longing to see some sunflowers or a tomato vine or a rosebush, it might be time to get a garden going. We have been doing the same, so we assembled this list of essential gardening tools to get you started. Aside from the items below, you just need to get to know your soil, get some seeds and you’re ready to go.

The three-pack will contain one of Junzi Kitchen’s original chili oils plus two made specifically for The Met collaboration: Silk Road and Red Lantern. Silk Road contains is meant to evoke flavor profiles from east to west, with ingredients such as Tianjin chilis, Indian turmeric, Wild Mountain Afghanistan cumin and Egyptian fennel. Red Lantern uses lantern chilis, providing bright heat, and mouth-tingling Sichuan peppercorn oil, savory confit shallots, umami-packed fermented black beans and mushroom powder to mimic MSG.

The collaboration between the restaurant and the museum is to celebrate The Met’s exhibition, Celebrating the Year of the Ox. The gift set and jars of chili oil are adorned with artwork from the collection, and half of the proceeds from sales will go towards The Met.

Our Place Tahdig Trio

Christopher Beyer

Our Place just added a new accessory for its Always Pan, and it’s one that celebrates a special holiday in Iranian culture. Nowruz, which starts on March 21, marks the start of the spring equinox. One food that is inherently tied to the occasion is tahdig, or “scorched rice,” for the thin crunchy bottom the rice gets from the way it’s cooked. Our Place founder Shiza Shahid, who is Pakistani, and husband Amir Tehrani, who is Iranian, wanted to celebrate tahdig by releasing the Tahdig Trio. It includes the Noosh-e-Joon platter, a ceramic dish that fits atop the Always Pan, and helps to achieve the 180° flip required to get perfectly shaped and browned tahdig; a damkoni, which is a cotton cloth that slips over the pan’s lid to soak up moisture; and saffron, the main ingredient in tahdig and most Nowruz dishes.

The Omakase Berry is sweet in a way that so many strawberry-flavored foods try to replicate. And the aroma of the fruit is almost perfume-like, filling a room with an intoxicating scent. The beer world is seeing an aluminum can shortage, and one of our favorite beers is going away because of it. Hopewell Brewing, one of the few women-led breweries around, used to make a beer called Lil Buddy, an 8-ounce lager that goes with almost anything. Because of the can shortage, Hopewell couldn’t get anymore of its “lil” cans, so as a last hurrah to the beer, those in the Chicago area can grab a Big Buddy, a 16-ounce version of our little friend. Grab one while you can, because once it’s gone, the beer is gone for good.

      Tank Garage Winery

We could all use a little self love. Or maybe a lot. A global pandemic, social isolation and over anxiety can really have an effect on one’s mental health, and Tank Garage Winery’s latest release is trying to help. The California winery’s Self-Love red wine blend of mostly syrah with cinsaut, grenache and valdiguié. A dollar form each bottle of Self-Love will go towards the National Alliance of Mental Illness & Health. Comfort yourself with a little wine, and help raise awareness around mental illness, too.

Hibiscus is subtly naturally sweet, with an overwhelming tartness that can help curb sugar cravings. The flower has a host of health benefits from potentially lowering blood pressure to boosting liver health. While you can drink Ruby on its own, it makes a surprisingly good cocktail mixer (agave-based spirits pair well).

Dyson’s Latest Innovation: A Vacuum That Fires Lasers

Vacuuming has come a long way since those clunky, corded monstrosities we used just a few decades ago. How far have vacuum cleaners come? Well, here’s a clue: Dyson just put a laser in its new V15 Detect — and as we all know, nothing screams “future” like lasers.

Starting with the Dyson V15 Detect ($700) (a name which suggests the brand skipped the V12, V13 and V14 models) the vacuum cleaner comes equipped with a green laser that’s projected against the floor to illuminate dust particles that would be hidden to the naked eye.

It can detect particles up to 10 microns in size — about the diameter of human red blood cells. The laser only works on hard surfaces, though; while this Dyson can vacuum rugs and carpets, of course, the laser won’t be able to detect dust particles there due to their uneven texture.

The V15 Detect’s five-stage filtration system, Dyson claims, can capture 99.99 percent of dust particles down to 0.3 microns in size, and 99.97 percent of dust particles down to 0.1 microns. How can you tell if it’s even working? The V15 Detect uses what’s called an acoustic piezo sensor that turns the vibrations of dust being sucked up into electric signals, which the V15 uses to relay the different sized particles you’ve vacuumed through its LCD screen.

dyson screen
The Dyson V15 Detect’s screen lets you know what’s been picked up so your cleaning efforts feel more rewarding.

Dyson

Additional specs for the V15 Detect include a 60-minute runtime, a new anti-tangle hair brush, a 0.2-gallon dust bin and eight additional tools for full-home cleaning.

The laser-blasting sucker is just one of three new vacuums Dyson released this week. Accompanying the V15 Detect’s release is the Dyson Outsize ($800), which runs for up to two hours, has a half-gallon dust bin and a full-size cleaner head with 25 percent more coverage. (The only thing it’s missing is a laser.)

The last of the trio of Dyson releases is the Omni-glide ($400), a hard-floor vacuum with a 360-degree swivel head. Unlike other Dyson stick vacuums, the Omni-glide operates with the push of a button instead of a trigger. The Omni-glide is light and compact, with a flexible neck to get under tight spaces. Its only downside is its short runtime, clocking in at 20 minutes. (Well, and again, the lack of a laser.)

The Dyson Omni-glide’s 360-degree swiveling head suctions up dust in every direction.

The trio of new Dyson vacuums are already sold out on Dyson’s website, but the V15 Detect ($700), Outsize ($800) and Omni-glide ($400) are all available at Best Buy.

The Best Desk Under $200 Is a Dead-Simple Ikea Hack

When shopping for a cheap desk, your options number in the tens of thousands, but I wager none are better than a dead-simple Ikea hack.

There isn’t an official name for this hack; indeed, the idea — popularized on Reddit (the subreddits /r/battlestations and /r/ikea, specifically) as well as the PC gaming community on TikTok — it might be too simple to earn the “hack” title. At its most basic, all you need are a pair of Ikea’s Alex Drawers, a tabletop of any kind and a couple optional add-ons.

The Alex units — which got so hot like Hansel, they were selling out all over the U.S. for a time — are the legs and foundation of your new desk. You then pick your table top, stick some furniture grip on the Alex units and place the table on top of that.

Why This Ikea Desk Hack Makes Sense

Low price: The best argument (and the only one necessary, for some) is the total cost. Depending on what desktop you go with, you could pull together this desk for well under $200. Feel free to trawl Wayfair, Overstock and other budget-minded sites to prove the contrary, but there aren’t many sub-$200 desks that offer what this one does.

Huge flexibility: You may be able to buy a desk that comes close to your preferred color scheme or the size you want on a budget, but you may have to sacrifice elsewhere. This hacky Ikea setup puts the ball back in your court, allowing you to pick from a few colors for the “legs” and go with whatever desktop look (and size) you want.

Move-friendly: Less of a priority for some prospective builders, but a traditional desk is a pain to move with or just move around the house. Because the Ikea setup here is essentially just a few things stacked on top of each other, any kind of moving is simplified.

It just looks good: While this is purely opinion, there aren’t many ultra-cheap desks that look as clean as this setup can with the right color combos.

The 13 Best Charcoal Grills You Can Buy in 2021

This definitive guide to the best charcoal grills of 2021 explores everything you need to know to find a charcoal grill best suited to your needs, including features to look for, materials, looks and price.

The Best Charcoal Grills for the Money

      The Upgrades

Beyond BTUs, max temperatures and fuel cost, the fundamental difference between charcoal grills and its competitors is convenience. Charcoal grills are inconvenient in every way that a gas, pellet or electric grill is not. This is the fundamental appeal. In the same way many driving enthusiast prefer manuals to automatics, there is carnal satisfaction in direct control, higher failure rates and sky-high potential. Yes, charcoal grills can do things the others can’t, but it’s the no handlebars process that makes great. From the most iconic backyard toy of the 20th century to something called a Yoder Smoker, these are the best you can buy right now.

        Weber Original Kettle Premium Grill

        Courtesy

Weber Original Kettle Premium 22-Inch Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $165.00

Best Overall Charcoal Grill: When you talk about charcoal grilling, you start with Weber’s kettle. The brand continues to represent the ideal mix of performance and price. Its customary porcelain-enameled steel body is sturdy enough to lock heat in and light enough to tow around without throwing out your back. Its construction is such that moving parts, screws and levers are kept to a bare minimum, which means it lasts much, much longer than other grills under $200.

The Premium version of the original kettle upgrades the ash catch in such a way that, to me, makes the $55-or-so extra worth it. Another bonus of investing in Weber kettles is the vast collection of aftermarket accessories you can get for one.

        BUY NOW

        Weber Original Kettle Grill

        Courtesy

Weber Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $109.00

Best Cheap Charcoal Grill: Materials, manufacturing and brand legacy all considered, it’s shocking the original Weber is still this affordable. The 22-inch staple is made with the same enameled steel as the Premium version and offers the same 363-inch cooking space (between 15 and 20 burgers worth of space), but it lacks the easier to clean ash catch. It’s not a huge issue, given the competition for a charcoal grill of this size is mostly rinky dink Amazon brands that don’t have customer service lines, strong warranties or any real reputation. If you’re dead set on a cheap grill and go for something other than the Weber original you’re doing so in an effort to be different, not have a better grill.

        Courtesy

        PK360 Grill + Smoker

        PK Grills pkgrills.com

        $799.99

Best Small Charcoal Grill, Best Charcoal Grill and Smoker: Let’s get this out of the way: almost any charcoal grill can be a smoker, too. It comes down to having enough space to create two-zone cooking areas (explained superbly by Amazing Ribs here). This is what PK (short for Portable Kitchen) grills are known for — they’re small enough to toss in the bed of a pickup with other tailgate gear, yet, thanks to four very smartly placed vents, functional enough to grill and smoke at high levels.

The PK grill is outfitted with vents on the top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left of the cast-aluminum grill body. When you want to sear steaks, chops or chicken, you open the fuel-side vents and let the fire rip. When you want to smoke ribs or a small pork butt, place the coals on one side of the grill and the meat on the opposite side of the grates. Then open the vent under the coals and over the meat — this feeds the fire and smokes the meat indirectly. The entire thing is rust-proof, too. (Read our review).

        Weber Go-Anywhere Grill

        Courtesy

        Weber Go-Anywhere Portable Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $54.99

Best Portable Charcoal Grill: The Go-Anywhere grill weighs 14.5 pounds, which is featherweight in charcoal grilling terms. It’s large enough for 6 to 8 burgers, two regular-sized steaks or one whole chicken. It is not a grill you’ll be able to effectively smoke or slow cook on consistently, but it offers a huge upgrade to camp dining. Because most of the places you’ll use this grill will necessitate packing light and thus not carrying a charcoal chimney, we recommend bringing a pack of lighter cubes with it wherever it goes.

        BUY NOW

        Why Buy a Charcoal Grill?

        Pros of Charcoal Grilling

Ultra high heat: other than commercial salamander burners (like this one), no grill type will reach the heat levels charcoal and wood-fired grills will. Expect maximum temperatures over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, reaching up to 1,250 depending on your setup.

Versatility: It gets hotter than hell, but it works just as well for low-and-slow cooks. When airflow is handled well and the fire is tended evenly, charcoal grills can hold steady temperature for days.

Fuel Variety: unlike gas or electric (not so much pellet), charcoal grills can cook with affordable Kingsford coals, more premium lump coal, binchotan or even coconut shells.

        Cons of Charcoal Grilling

Small learning curve: Learning how to properly stack coals, light a fire, hold a steady temperature and control airflow takes time.

A big mess: Expect your hands, your grill and everything in the general vicinity of the grill to have a slight tinge of charcoal dust for the foreseeable future.

Semi weather dependent: Where gas, pellet and electric grills can operate in windy and even rainy conditions, charcoal can struggle. The wind can choke out or puff up a fire to unmanageable levels.

Time sink: Lighting coals takes more time than clicking the go button on a gas grill. Cleaning the grill takes time. If you’re looking to grill multiple times a week, a nice gas grill may be a better option.

What to Look for in a Charcoal Grill

Materials Matter: Whether you’re shopping online or in-person, seek out construction information. Does the listing have two dozen bullets touting all the heavy-gauge stainless steel, cast aluminum and enameled iron (or steel)? That’s a good sign. If it’s not flexing its construction, it’s more likely to have rust spots, fail at retaining heat and generally come apart earlier than you’d want.

Beefy Warranties: Buying a grill that’s a few hundred dollars and it has a one-year parts warranty? Don’t buy it. Something that costs that much should be guaranteed, in part at least, for three to five years. Some of the grills on this guide come with lifetime part warranties.

Adjustable (and Customizable) Grates: Look for a wheel or lever that lets you move the grates or the coal bed up and down — preferably both. This allows for more cooking methods. As an added bonus, some companies offer upgraded grates (or there are aftermarket grates you can buy).

Vents! Vents! Vents!: In the making of a single meal, airflow determines quality more than great grates, coal quality and construction. It allows for you to feed a fire to sear like you want, keep a medium heat to roast a chicken or smoke ribs nice and slow. The more vents to play with, the better.

Delivery and Setup: This is a simple one. Some grills come fully assembled, others take a full day to set up. Look at this before shipping a 500-pound piece of metal to your house.

Weber Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $109.00

It should come as no surprise that among the best charcoal grills for the money is the maker of the best value charcoal grills. The 18-inch version of Weber’s kettle grill is large enough to grill close to 10 burgers, comes with an ash catch and is available for less than $100. All other pros related to Weber construction, versatility and durability apply, too.

        Nex-Grill Cart Grill

        Nex-Grill Cart-Style Charcoal Grill

        $119.00

A $109 grill (that frequently goes on sale) that’s built of enameled iron, comes with a trio of vents for controlled airflow and looks kind of decent? Sure enough. Nex-Grill’s compact cart grill isn’t going to last forever and won’t be suited for large grill gatherings, but it’s got all the features needed for good grilling and entry-level smoking. Plus, it’s available at Home Depot.

This grill from Ikea was designed to fit with the brand’s Applaro outdoor furniture collection. For around $350, you get plenty of storage and a surprisingly well-made budget grill, complete with requisite vents for airflow control and a very handy pull-out ash tray.

        Masterbuilt Gravity Series Grill

Masterbuilt Gravity Series 560 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker

        Masterbuilt walmart.com

        $497.00

Masterbuilt’s charcoal take on a wood pellet grill is the most controversial charcoal grill on the list. Load coals in the hopper and play with the grill’s onboard computer — which controls temperature levels and air flow — to grill with precision without any experience. That functionality, which also enables the cook to go more hands-off (which means more time with the people you’re cooking for), is likely the future of grilling. The pain points are temperature maximum and construction. The former is significantly lower than your standard charcoal grill (just 700 degrees), and the latter is questionable at best, with some plastic and painted stainless steel that chips rather easily. Looking for something you can turn on in the morning and not come back to until dinnertime? This is it.

        $895.92

Broilmaster is one of grilling’s old guards. Founded in 1966, the company has iterated its design into a unique, highly functional and ultra-durable charcoal grill. A cast-aluminum body was one of the founding principle which has lasted to today, where it is still the gold standard for even heat distribution and weather resistance. And though its grates can’t be cycled up or down, it does have a unique split-grate setup that allows for cooking nearer or further from the flame. The pull out ashtray and vent count are the icing on top.

Hasty Bake Legacy 131 Charcoal Grill

Hasty-Bake Legacy Black Powder Coated Charcoal Grill

        Hasty-Bake bbqguys.com

        $1,099.00

Lauded by professional chefs, Hasty Bake charcoal grills ride the line between commercial and residential use in their functionality and no-bullshit aesthetic. The company made its first grill — then called a charcoal oven — in 1948 and has been making them non-stop since. From a construction perspective, the grill is a beast. Loads of 18-gauge powder-coated stainless steel make up the body, and the grates are nickel-plated steel. Parts come with a 5-year warranty, too. A quirk: the grill has a ventless hood, which changes… a lot. Instead of smoke and heat flowing up through the coal bed and out the top of the grill, heat rises to the top of the lid, where it meets a heat deflector, which recirculates the heat. This means hotspots are a rarity, and creates what amounts to a charcoal convection oven.

A 375-pound charcoal grill with more than 700 square inches of cooking space perfectly placed vents make the near perfect party grill. Removable cooking grates are standard fare, but being able to remove the charcoal grate is a huge help with cleaning a grill this size. One last thing: the wagon-style wheels are made of the same heavy-as-shit stainless steel as the grill body, meaning they won’t casually crack or break down like many others.

The serial grill reviewers at Amazing Ribs said it best: “If you’re committed to charcoal, but envious of your neighbor’s shiny gasser, the Napoleon PRO605 may be the answer.”

Napoleon is primarily a gas grill maker, but its glossy stainless steel charcoal grill is exceptional, and it’s one of very few high-end charcoal grills that have that new look. Other than its highly durable build, the grill ticks all the boxes: variable coal bed height, sturdy grates and (relatively) easy-cleaning. Some will be fond of Napoleon’s staple “wave” grate design.

The new-ish Everdure brand is the brainchild of Michelin-starred UK chef Heston Blumenthal. Its Hub grill targets pain points in the charcoal grilling process and addresses them with features like electric charcoal ignition and porcelain covered grates that are easy to clean. It’s also got a built in rotiserrie over the grates, which few charcoal grills offer as a standard. This is the grill you get to show off a bit, and keeps your hands clean. A downside: compared to most brands in this guide, Everdure has very few stockists, which means it may be tough to get hands-on with one before dropping two grand.

Oishii

The perfect strawberry exists, and it comes out of a vertical farm in New Jersey. Hiroki Koga is the founder of Oishii, and he just so happens to be an expert in vertical farming. That means he can precisely control Mother Nature indoors to grow the perfect strawberry every time. His variety of strawberry happens to be the Omakase Berry, with origins in Japan. The Omakase Berry is sweet in a way that so many strawberry-flavored foods try to replicate. And the aroma of the fruit is almost perfume-like, filling a room with an intoxicating scent. Michelin-starred restaurants, like Atomix and Olmsted, feature the Omakase Berry in its menus, and if you live in Manhattan or parts of Brooklyn, you can get a taste of perfection.

Hopewell Brewing Big Buddy

The beer world is seeing an aluminum can shortage, and one of our favorite beers is going away because of it. Hopewell Brewing, one of the few women-led breweries around, used to make a beer called Lil Buddy, an 8-ounce lager that goes with almost anything. Because of the can shortage, Hopewell couldn’t get anymore of its “lil” cans, so as a last hurrah to the beer, those in the Chicago area can grab a Big Buddy, a 16-ounce version of our little friend. Grab one while you can, because once it’s gone, the beer is gone for good.

Ruby

Ruby is already a television star. The hibiscus water made its debut as a cameo in the HBO show “Euphoria,” and now Ruby is available for purchase. The antioxidant-packed drink is available in sweetened and unsweetened varieties, and it tastes somewhere in between cranberry juice and black tea.

Allergy Season Is Upon Us. Luckily, This Air Purifier Is an Actual Dust Magnet

Do you smell that? Neither can I, thanks to nasal congestion. Spring is almost here, and so are the allergy-related symptoms that come along with it. Luckily, top-rated air purifier brand Blueair has just launched its DustMagnet series — and I can breathe easier already.

Blueair’s new line of air purifiers, available in two sizes (the smaller 5200s and the larger 5400s) are designed to attract and capture dust like a magnet by using two positively charged stainless steel pre-filters that draw offending particles in. This means the purifiers can suck allergens out of the air before they have a chance to settle in your home.

Blueair’s DustMagnet pre-filters are positively charged, which makes them better at attracting dust than other filters.

Blueair

The DustMagnet air purifiers use two filters, located at the top and the bottom of the unit, that work in tandem with their dual inlet and outlet system to better eliminate air particles. Blueair’s HEPASilent filtration technology effectively clean the air while barely making a sound. The smaller DustMagnets are good for rooms up to 242 square feet, and the larger units can handle rooms of up to 380 square feet.

Smart capabilities means you can connect the DustMagnets to Blueair’s app for wireless usage and constant air quality readings, and pair them with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant for hands-free control. And the DustMagnets excel from an aesthetic standpoint, as well; not only are nicer than most air purifiers on the market, they can even function as a side table.

“Consumers shouldn’t have to compromise on design when it comes to having clean air inside their home,” Blueair’s chief product officer Jonas Holst said. “That is why we combined performance and aesthetics in DustMagnet, creating air purifiers that capture dust before it settles and blends into your home — like a great-looking piece of Scandinavian-style furniture.”

The DustMagnet air purifiers are available in two finishes: white and a pricier light-grey textile.

Want a Plush Green Lawn Without the Pesticides? Buy This

If you care for a yard, you probably know Roundup. If you use Roundup, it’s worth reconsidering for something like Sunday, which is now available to order through the brand’s website or at Walmart.

Roundup has had a rough few years, which reached a low point mid-2020 when it agreed to pay more than $10 billion in settlements from cases claiming the glyphosate, the foundation of Roundup, caused non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In 2015, the World Health Organization’s cancer research arm deemed it a “probable carcinogen,” while the Environmental Protection Agency has held firm that glyphosate does not cause cancer.

Sunday’s, one of our picks for best new products of 2019, skirts this issue by avoiding glyphosate entirely, opting instead for natural materials that aren’t surrounded by safety question marks. The product lineup includes spot-cleaning weed killers, yard sprays, fertilizers, grass seeds and seasonal prep kits. Or, if you want gold course grass in your front yard, opt for a Smart Lawn Plan, in which Sunday harnesses weather data, satellites, geology and a soil sample from your yard to build a bespoke, non-toxic kit for your yard.
