What is the Cooly?

How does it work?

Technical Specifications And Design

On the subject of portability, the Cooly measures a pocketable 3.03” x 3.97” x 1.41” (W x H x D) and tips the scales at 5.99 ounces. REC Watches RNR Arkonik: Automotive-Inspired Watchmaking At Its Finest

Land Rover is an iconic British marque that supplies the automotive industry with rugged and expedition-ready vehicles. Among its lineup of tough rides, the Defender has amassed a cult following for years now. The model’s immense popularity makes it a perfect platform for aftermarket customizations. As such, REC Watches pays tribute to a mechanical masterpiece with an exclusive timepiece – the RNR Arkonik.

Given the difficulty of finding a classic that’s in pristine condition, most people turn to restomods. For its latest project, the Copenhagen, Denmark-based watchmaker draws more than just inspiration from a 1984 Arkonik Land Rover Defender 110 UJO. Before we dive in let’s give you a brief overview of the SUV that led to this awesome collaboration.

How The UJO Came To Be

As REC Watches tells it, the story began when Arkonik founder Andy Hayes arrived home from the hospital in 2006. Coming from a two-month recovery period after a motorcycle accident, his wife surprised him with a “Stratos Blue” 1984 Land Rover Defender 110. It was supposedly something he could work on as a hobby.

The “UJO” moniker apparently came from the last three randomized letters of the Defender 110’s plate number – “B379 UJO.” After a comprehensive restoration, Hayes took the SUV on a tour across Europe. By the end of his travels, the experience sparked the creation of the Arkonik brand. Now, you can own a piece of the legendary machine that started it all with the RNR Arkonik.

A Sophisticated Homage To A Stunning Ride

Much like their previous outings, REC Watches allows us to own an actual part of the vehicle they choose to feature. For the RNR Arkonik, they are sourcing it directly from the abovementioned 1984 Land Rover Defender 110 UJO. The result is nothing short of amazing as the design and accents are carefully curated to best represent the essence of this British-built beauty.

Let’s start with the 40-mm square case with rounded corners crafted out of 316L stainless steel. We love how they went with three different finishes: sandblasted, polished, and vertical brushed. It different textures of the surfaces endow the RNR Arkonik with a nice contrast when the light hits it from different angles.

What follows is the durable Viton (FKM) rubber bezel in the shape of a tire. You can also find it on the crown. Beneath the sapphire crystal, is the soul of this limited-edition production, which is an aluminum dial cut from the 1984 Arkonik Land Rover Defender 110 UJO’s door. After the metal panel was stripped of its paint and primer, 302 dials were punched out to become bespoke elements on the RNR Arkonik.

No further treatment was necessary as REC Watches wanted to keep scuffs and dents that the SUV accumulated over the years. The hour and minutes are indicated by two skeleton hands. Meanwhile, a small seconds sub-dial sits at 9 o’clock as It shares the spot with the date window. The REC branding is just below 12 o’clock with the Arkonik badge at above 6 o’clock. You then have the minute track on the flange with an orange outer ring.

Referencing The UJO

Next up are the design references to the 1984 Arkonik Land Rover Defender 110 UJO. Look closer to spot the hour markers at 12, 3, and 6 o’clock in the shape of a fuel cap. A view from the right flank of the case band reveals crown protectors that resemble the front grille. Make your way to the caseback to spot engravings laser-etched engravings of the chassis décor. Finally, the rear cover channels the alloy wheels.

At the heart of the RNR Arkonik is a Swiss-made Sellita SW290-1 self-winding caliber. This 31-jewel mechanical movement beats at the frequency rate of 28,800 VPH (4.0 Hz) and touts a 38-hour power reserve. To finish off the theme, the watch receives a blue Viton (FKM) rubber strap. REC Watches plans to produce only 302 examples, so order yours before all units are spoken for.

UNDONE reveals these models draw inspiration from classic wristwatches that were popular among the elite in the Middle East. A while back, the watchmaker also designed the beautiful Arabian Nights as a tribute to the mystical tales from the region.

For its latest outing, we have vintage elements paired to a more contemporary profile. You are getting a chronograph with a timeless aesthetic which will be available in flamboyant shades to match the sunny theme of the season. Just like what we said before, summer brings forth all the cool stuff.

In-Depth With the Stellar collection

Although most guys prefer to have their accessories in darker tones, hints of other colors provide a welcome contrast to what might have been a monochrome aesthetic. Meanwhile, UNDONE shows us that they can pull off an elegant look even with bright colorways. The Stellar collection is exactly as the name suggests courtesy of the striking details within.

To start off, we have a 40 mm 316L stainless steel case that measures 12 mm thick with the domed K1 crystal. Almost everything has been polished except for the caseband and lugs which sport a brushed finish instead. Being a chronograph, you have the crown with the brand’s “U” emblem engraved on top and is then flanked by two pushers.

UNDONE proudly points out the high gloss enamel of the dial that gives owners the illusion of paint which has yet to dry. Each one undergoes several sanding sessions to eliminate the “orange peel” effect. Nobody wants to see uneven surfaces that are visible from almost any angle unless it’s actually by design. Thankfully, the Stellar does not have the problem.

Going back to the dial, you have applied silver stick hour markers with a minute track in black save for the Purple variant which has it in white. Just below 12 o’clock is a printed Khanjar emblem. Apparently, you can only find this on special edition watches that are usually given as gifts in the Middle East.

The crest is again visible on the glass of its exhibition caseback which also gives us a peek inside. Within, there is a Japanese TMI VK64 Mechanical-Quartz Hybrid Flyback Chronograph movement pushing things along. Finally, the Khanjar logo appears once more on the dark brown leather strap which accompanies each Stellar, along with their respective colorful Epsom-grained leather strap.

After reviewing several unique and memorable timepiece from UNDONE, there’s essentially nothing that we would consider negative about the brand. The Stellar collection is no different as we continue to see the hallmarks of impressive craftsmanship and attention to quality.

Just a little over a month ago, we featured products from a rekindled partnership between a Hong Kong-based fashion house and watchmaker. That was the UNDONE LAB + Simple Union collection of accessories. What we didn’t know that it was just a teaser that leads up to another exciting tie-in. Hence, the latest to come from this collaboration are two classy wristwatches; The UNDONE x Simple Union: Sometsuke and UNDONE Urushi.

UNDONE x Simple Union: 無3

One look at the unique visuals each brings to the table reminds us of the label’s previous work. The 無2(MŪ2), gave us a wonderful overview of how imperfections can highlight the beauty of an object or even a person in some cases. Moreover, this is what the Japanese refer to as the philosophy behind Wabi-Sabi.

With all 300 examples of the aforementioned limited-edition timepiece selling out in less than two days, it was only a matter of time before UNDONE revisited the concept. With Simple Union back in the saddle once more for this artistic endeavor, the Sometsuke and Urushi will likely be a hit, especially among those who loved the older ones.

Two brands, one cohesive design

With the Sometsuke headlining this pleasantly regular partnership between UNDONE and Simple Union, it’s only fitting that we start things off with this timepiece. As you can likely glean from the specifications, there are some elements that each share with the other.

What immediately grabs your focus here is the aesthetic choice for the dial. Living up to its name — “Sometsuke” — which refers to the traditional way of making porcelain that’s primarily in white with a variety of designs in blue.

To achieve the look of this type of pottery, UNDONE uses white enamel paint on the dial. What follows are the indices and cathedral hands in blue that recreate the signature classic look of vintage ceramics we mentioned earlier.

This continues with a line that starts just below the 4 o’clock hour marker and runs diagonally up to the left and ends with a crack at the 9 o’clock section. This exposes the movement beneath which is in gold to represent the art of Kintsugi (金継ぎ).

It is meant to represent the Japanese method of mending broken porcelain using gold. Once again, you have to give it to UNDONE for artfully pulling this off on the Sometsuke. Enclosing it with a 316L stainless-steel tartaruga case and exhibition case back likewise gives it another layer of sophistication.

The partnership with Simple Union is visible with the Hong Kong-based fashion house’s emblem at 12 o’clock. Additionally, the intricate patterns of its 150-year-old Katazome fabric strap mean each of the 300 Sometsuke watches is truly one-of-a-kind.

The Sometsuke might be the poster boy for this new collection, but UNDONE is not about to downplay the elegance of the Urushi. While its limited-edition stablemate captures the lighter shades of the color spectrum, it goes for a darker tone that is further enhanced by the gold accents.

According to what the watchmaker shares, its namesake is taken from an ancient ritual performed by Japanese monks whereby they make tea out of the Urushi tree. It might sound like something ordinary except that the ingredients they use are as toxic as poison ivy.

This supposedly aids in the process of self-mummification called Sokushinbutsu (即身仏), which is done by a few devout Buddhist monks. Aside from the creepy history, the name Urushi also refers to lacquer sourced from the said tree.

UNDONE starts off with a black dial intended to represent the iconic Japanese lacquerware of the same color. It also infuses the art of Maki-e to decorate the glossy surface with specs of gold applied by a brush.

The theme continues as the Urushi boasts golden cathedral hands as well as indices that glitter against the inky black backdrop. These, along with the movement, sit within a 316L stainless-steel tartaruga case under sapphire crystals on both ends. Finally, it is paired with a brown Italian leather strap.

Our Takeaway

Now that you are aware of the differences between the Sometsuke and Urushi, let’s talk about what they have in common. First off, we have that minimalist-yet-stylish 316 stainless-steel tartaruga case with a combination of satin and glossy surfaces. Next, is the fluted crown with the watchmaker’s “U” emblem at 3 o’clock. Finally, there are the enamel painted dials that emulate the appearance of porcelain and lacquerware respectively.

A dial that with a profound meaning

Of course, let’s not forget that each flaunts what UNDONE calls their Kyoto dial, which is a variation of the California dial. Instead of Roman numerals for the top half, the markers are instead replaced with four stylized Kanji characters. Furthermore, these embody the so-called Three Marks of Existence (三印法): 無, 常, 苦, 空.

Translated, they mean impermanence(無常), suffering(苦), and absence of self-nature(空). As you can see, the UNDONE x Simple Union: 無3 collection is definitely something else. UNDONE x Popeye & Friends collector’s boxset edition

A while back, we told you about a stylish and exciting label founded by Michael Young called UNDONE. In fact, the pieces we have featured in the past usually push the boundaries of what’s fashionable and functional. Another aspect of the label that keeps us hooked is their never-ending pursuit for awesome tie-ins on top of their comprehensive personalization options. Their latest venture revisits one of the most beloved classic cartoon franchises with the Popeye & Friends Collector’s Boxset Edition.

Some of you might recall that a little while back UNDONE gave us the Popeye Limited Edition “The Sailorman” timepiece. Meanwhile, there was also the Popeye Limited Edition El Capitan which was a great alternative for those who preferred the feel of metal with its stainless-steel bracelet. Of course, all 300 examples of each variant quickly sold out (likely snapped up by eager fans of the Spinach-fueled sailor).

A Welcome Return

Given its popularity, the watchmaker was surely considering another run to give those who missed out a chance. However, instead of a reissue – which some brands do – UNDONE opted for something vintage animation enthusiasts would go crazy over. The Popeye & Friends Collector’s Boxset Edition not only directs the spotlight on its namesake but also completes the long-running love triangle.

How you ask? Well, UNDONE is finally adding another two highly-collectible models to represent Popeye’s main squeeze and bitter rival. Longtime aficionados of the syndicated series will love the inclusion of Olive Oyl and Brutus in the set. The Popeye & Friends Collector’s Boxset Edition comes in an exclusive box adorned with the show’s protagonist.

Pop the cover off and inside you’ll find a high-quality print of each of the three artworks of Popeye, Olive, and Brutus set in an aluminum frame. The fun continues as UNDONE puts three transparent spinach cans with each respective watch unique to the Popeye & Friends Collector’s Boxset Edition inside. If you’re wondering, the units are hidden within the colored confetti.

Although the Boxset Edition of the “Destro” Popeye shares a lot of similarities with the regular version, one has to look closely to see that the bezel matches the case. instead of the printed indices with lume set on a dark navy blue background, it has raised bronze markings.

It might have sacrificed additional low-light visibility but this means the bezel, along with the case and crown, will develop a patina over time. The weathered look will give the watch more character.

A lighter shade of navy blue is used for the dial which also features Popeye in his iconic ensemble. His hands point out the minutes and hours while a red second hand adds some contrast.

For those who are still new when it comes to watchmaking terms, the “Destro” Popeye is called as such courtesy of the placement of its screw-down crown. Instead of regular configurations that have it on the 3 o’clock side, you’ll find it beside the 9 o’clock marker.

This setup favors left-handed individuals who normally wear watches on their right wrist. Nevertheless, you can still strap it to your left which keeps the crown away from your wrist.

Flip it over to view the movement through the transparent section of its 316L stainless-steel caseback. You’ll also find the Popeye script printed on it along with the watch’s number in the series. The “Destro” Popeye is paired with a navy blue fabric/leather strap with a bronze pin buckle.

Although this outing is the fourth yet unique iteration of a Popeye character watch from UNDONE, it marks the first appearance of Olive Oyl. Everyone’s favorite spinach-eating sailor needs some company and the 34 Olive Boxset Edition is just the thing fans need.

While it is marketed as a ladies watch, nobody will likely tell you not to wear it. As long as the leather strap fits your wrist, go for it! A quick comparison with the regular 34 Olive shows us that there are striking differences between the two.

The 316L stainless steel case flaunts a rose gold PVD coating that extends all the way to the exhibition caseback. Much like the “Destro” Popeye Boxset Edition, the Olive Oyl script and serial number are likewise there.

Next is the crown, which, unlike the standard version, has a blue sapphire inlay. The lustre of the mother of pearl dial allows the printed image of Olive to shine. It’s clear that she’s madly in love with Popeye as dictated by the hearts around her.

To match the ladylike theme of the 34 Olive Boxset Edition are the Breguet numerals for the hour markers.Then there’s the black leather strap with matching rose gold pin buckle.

Completing the trio in the collection is Popeye’s toughest enemy. Thus, it’s only fitting that UNDONE is crafting his timepiece with tougher materials. It arrives in a chunky 316L stainless steel case with a blue PVD coating that adds another layer of durability.

Next up is the metal bezel in black with a black zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) ceramic bezel insert. Owners will have a hard time (pun intended) scratching this from normal usage alone. Channeling the two-tone presentation of Brutus’ rival, the caseback is in black as well.

Meanwhile, the sapphire crystals on both sides should keep visibility in tip-top shape. Now, what makes the Aqua Brutus Boxset Edition stand out from the default trim is the red Cerakote crown. Once more, UNDONE is emphasizing this divers watch’s rugged nature.

It features a half-transparent dial with Brutus and his menacing scowl smack in the middle. This makes the date ring and other mechanical assets within visible. Still, a dedicated date window at the 3 o’clock mark will help you keep track of the day.

The Aqua Brutus Boxset Edition ships with a robust rubber strap with a black pin buckle. Along with the “Destro” Popeye Boxset Edition, it runs on a reliable Japanese TMI NH35A automatic calibre.

Olight Baton 3 Premium Edition: An awesome EDC bundle for your collection

Among the EDCs that we regularly have in our bags, backpacks, pocket, flashlights are perhaps the most neglected. However, when the lights go out or when you’re in a survival situation that requires illumination, that’s when we find out how essential these tools could be. Olight was courteous enough to send over one of their latest models – the Baton 3 Premium Edition – for us to review.

After featuring several of their products in the past, we have high expectations for this one. As expected, the company did not disappoint. Just like when you order directly from Olight, the item shipped out quickly and was securely packed.

Unboxing the Baton 3 Premium Edition

The package arrives in a white box with the Olight branding on all side except for the top, bottom, and rear. The Baton 3 Premium Edition is available in three colorways: blue/black, red/gold, and black/dark blue. Ours was the latter and it is prominently on the box along with some of its features.

Equally notable is the bi-fold flap clasps to the side with magnets. What immediately greets you is a message from the Olight Team that reads: “Welcome to the Olight family! Enjoy your next level EDC experience with this Baton 3 Premium Edition.”

It’s a simple but meaningful touch that goes a long way with consumers. Thank you Olight! Next up is a sturdy yellow plastic sleeve with “getting started” information as well as some warnings on what not to do with the product within.

Taking it out, immediately greeting us is the Baton 3 Premium Edition within a plastic sleeve. Below is a pull-out tab that exposes a smaller box that holds the charging cable, instruction manual, and cleaning cloth. Olight’s attention to subtle details is certainly impressive.

The metal strain relief ends of the USB-A to USB-C charging cable matches the colorway of our variant and even includes caps to keep dust out. Bravo! These thoughtful nuances make technophiles like us happy.

Hands-On with the flashlight

Now that we’ve provided the specifications of the Baton 3 Premium Edition, let’s move on to the good stuff. Olight recommends that you fully charge it first, but there is some residual power left from when it left the factory.

To give you an idea, the charging case may be crafted out of plastic but there is some heft to it which is likely from the battery. It’s just slightly larger than that of the AirPods and AirPods Pro, which makes it very pocketable as most EDCs should be.

The cover flips open to the side much like that of a typical Zippo lighter and is secured in place when closed by a magnet. After lifting it up you’ll see the Baton 3 nestled inside with an insulating piece of plastic as well as an LED indicator on the edge.

If this is your first time taking out the flashlight, you’re probably wondering why it’s not working right? We were also in the same boat because we failed to pay attention to one crucial direction. It was clearly noted on the yellow sleeve upon unboxing that we should unscrew the handle and remove another piece of insulating plastic.

The aluminum alloy construction of this compact EDC tool gives it a durable vibe. The matte finish coupled with the textured grip of the handle makes it less likely to slip out of your hands. For added versatility, a two-way pocket clip and lanyard hole combo come standard.

Using The Baton 3 Premium Edition

With that out of the way, you can now turn on the Baton 3 by pressing the button once. To switch intensity levels, just hold the button down for a few seconds to cycle through the three main presets.

The lowest brightness level – Moonlight Mode — is accessible by holding down the button when the flashlight is turned off. To activate the Strobe function, press the button three times in rapid succession.

Finally, to quickly engage Turbo Mode wherein the unit emits a blinding beam at (6,889 candela/1,200 lumens) that is visible up to 545 feet away, press the button twice. Only enable this setting when absolutely necessary as it will quickly heat up the metal body.

After use, just slip it back into the slot within the charging case to recharge. Likewise, we want to point out that the magnets Olight uses are quite powerful. These keep the flashlight firmly in place.

There was no wiggle at all and it doesn’t even fall out. Trust us, we tried vigorously shaking the Baton 3 Premium Edition upside down with the cover open. It’s definitely stuck in there like a champ until you manually pull it out.

Our Takeaway

It should be obvious that we have don’t really have any complaints against the Baton 3 Premium Edition. Still, others might find it too small for other applications. This might be true, but the manufacturer actually offers a wide range of lighting products that will cater to what you need.
