The 2020 Lotus Evija: a 2,000hp EV That Starts at $2.1 Million

Lotus, the storied British car brand best known for its Elise and Evora sports cars, unveiled the ultra-exotic Evija earlier today. In addition to giving the much-teased “Type 130” a proper nameplate, the Evija is also notable beyond the grandeur that its specifications provide: the all-electric hypercar is also the first car released by the brand since its purchase by Geely Automobile Holdings a year ago.

And what a car it is.

Big Numbers

Lotus has been hyping the Evija, going as far as saying that the Evija will be a mind-blowing supercar. That’s a direct quote from Lotus CEO Phil Popham, by the way. In 2019, you only successful blow minds with number and specs that keep (ultra-rich) enthusiasts jaws glued to the floor.

In that respect, Lotus isn’t playing around. The Evija really is something incredible.

Claimed 2020 Lotus Evija Specifications

Horsepower 1,973 hp / 1,471 kW
Range 250 miles
Time to full charge (w/ 350kW charger) 18 minutes
Time to full charge (w/ 900kW charger) 9 minutes
Target curb weight 3,700 lbs / 1,680 kg
MSRP $2.1 million
  • 1,973 horsepower / 1,471 kW
  • 250-mile range
  • 18-minutes to fully charge (with a 350kW charger)…
  • … 9-minutes to a full charge on an 800kW charger
  • Target curb weight of 3,700 lbs (1,680 kg)
  • A pure electric 4WD drivetrain

Sadly, the only small number tied to the Evija is its production cap, which is pegged at 130 examples.

Target Performance Specifications

You’d be correct to think that the power behind the Evija would push it to be capable of some amazing things, and according to Lotus, you’d be right.

0-60 mph Under 3 seconds
0-186 mph Under 9 seconds
Top speed “In excess of 200 mph / 320 km/h”

2020 Lotus Evija Side Profile2020 Lotus Evija Side Profile

As you can see, the Evija is no joke of an electric hypercar. In many ways, it’s lived up the hype from the company’s CEO. The car features two electric motors to achieve its power output, and the battery is placed in the middle of the car where a typical internal combustion mid-engine car would have its beating heart, meaning this helps with weight distribution.

The electric motors are sourced from Integral Powertrain Ltd, and feature a helical gear ground planetary gearboxes that are extremely slim. The gearbox and motor are all packaged together into one cylindrical unit for each drive unit, meaning it’s all quite compact and lightweight.

An Exterior Design Like No Other

Looking at the Evija is one thing. The car features a seriously beautiful design, but it’s about more than looks with this car. The model features curves, creases, and vents unlike any other car on the road. At the rear of the Evija, there are dramatic Venturi tunnels through each rear quarter. This not only directs airflow properly but provides a dramatic look for the Evija that is unexpected and more than welcome.

2020 Lotus Evija2020 Lotus Evija

According to Russell Carr, Design Director, Lotus Cars, the company looked a Le Man’s race cars use airflow. It’s not just about getting air to push the car in one direction. “We studied how Le Mans race cars use airflow creatively to go over, under and around the vehicle, but also through it,” Carr said.

The Evija is the first car to feature a single-piece carbon fiber chassis that weighs just 284 pounds. That’s insanely lightweight. The vehicle sits a mere four inches above the ground. The car also features active aerodynamic elements including an integrated air diffuser that extends from the B-pillar to the rear of the car. There’s also an active rear spoiler that is flush to the rear of the car whenever it’s not in use.

2020 Lotus Evija top down view

Additionally, the car features no side mirrors further reducing drag. Instead of side mirrors, the car gets cameras placed in the front wings of the car. There’s also a camera built into the roof of the car providing a rearview for the driver. Images from these cameras are displayed on three different cameras inside the car.

A Motorsports-Inspired Interior

The interior of the Evija is minimal, futuristic, and driver-focused. The cabin features a special “floating wing” dash. This is just one of the elements that give the car a futuristic feel on the inside. The doors of the car are two dihedral doors. These doors feature no door handles and can be operated by the key fob.

Inside the cabin, you’ll see more carbon fiber than you know what to do with. The car features two seats that feature a thin metal band that has the words ‘For The Drivers’ engraved on it.

2020 Lotus Evija interior2020 Lotus Evija interior

Lotus sought to feature the perfect balance between a track car and a road car on the inside of the Evija. This means the car has a minimal, driver-focused interior design but with plenty of what you expect in a road car. There’s a single large screen in front of the driver that has everything you’ll need.

The seats are trimmed in thick Alcantara-finished pads and offer adjustment. The steering column is adjustable for both rake and reach and features a unique race-car-like design. Three-point seat belts are standard but Lotus will provide four-point harnesses if wanted.

In the center of the dash is the drive mode selector, which can transition the car from Range, City, Tour, Sport, and Track. The differences between the modes should be pretty self-explanatory. Within the infotainment system of the car is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as connection to the cloud for over-the-air updates for the car.

In addition to all of this, Lotus is offering customers the chance to wholly personalize their cars. The company is offering marquetry-style badging for all of the Evijas. Lotus can inlay metal elements into the carbon fiber keeping the meal inlay flush with the surface of the carbon fiber. This allows for unique customization opportunities.

As we said above, the company plans to only build 130 examples of the car. Each one will run $2.1 million and demand a deposit of $310,177. That’s a lot of money, but this is a car like no other.

Rapide E: Secrets of First All-Electric Aston Martin

The evolution of the inaugural all-electric car by Aston Martin, also known as the Rapide E, is advancing rapidly with confirmed specific technicalities for the 155-unit limited special edition. Aston Martin has collaborated with WAE (Williams Advanced Engineering), a leading organization in the EV (Electronic Vehicle) technology to initiate a new generation for the manufacturer’s powertrain technology. Further, the collaboration has come in handy to help overcome the technical challenges involved in the motors and battery system packaging.

The engineering team has strived to establish an effective cooling system for the motor and batteries to guarantee dependable performance. Carbon composite elements and lightweight alloys have been utilized to ensure that rigorous weight targets are observed.

Powering the Rapide E

An 800 volt with 65kWh build in capacity electrical battery design will be used to power the Rapide E. It will be fitted with 5600 lithium ion 18650 cylindrical cells which shall be firmly fixed in a designated battery pack. This will also house the fuel tank, gearbox, and the standard 6.0 liter V12.

The two electrical motors fixed at the rear are powered by this battery system which enables them to generate a connected output target of slightly over 610PS and an immense torque of 950Nm.  The WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) estimates Rapid E’s scope target to be more than 200 miles. This car model can achieve an 1851, 2 miles per hour charging rate when using an ordinary 400V 50kW charger.

Still, its high voltage battery system can allow for up to 3101, 2 charging rate per hour while utilizing an 800V outlet and conveying more than 100kW. Aston Martin has designed the Rapid E to be a high-performance machine that can be utilized to enhance Milani Exotic Rentals services. Its estimated speed is 155mph complete with a 0-60mph sub-4.0sec time and a 50-70mph time of 15sec.

Absolute Performance

These figures, however, are not only limited to a partial window when the batteries are ultimately charged. Rather, the focus is towards an absolute performance on demand over a huge percentage of the battery charge window state, as would be the case from a traditional in-house combustion-engine vehicle.  This is inclusive of the ability to endure the day to day demands of redundant braking and solid acceleration, as well as the power to drive an entire Nürburgring lap without de-rating the battery.

The Rapid E underbody and exterior have been aerodynamically advanced and finished with modern designed aerodynamic wheels. According to the engineers, the car’s tires are designed to minimize cavity noise while conveying a reduced rolling resistance and a greater power capability. Further, the Rapid E is specially designed to accomplish greater aerodynamic levels, cooling performance, and frictional loss as compared to the Rapid S. This project seeks to improve and maintain the delivery, character, and feel of the Rapid S’s V12- engine.

Finally

The manufacturer will pay special attention to the tuning and evolution of the chassis and electric powertrain while focusing on software integration. Even though the Rapide E will be developed in low volumes, it is currently being exposed to strict Aston Martin’s protocols and a committed Williams Advanced Engineering team collaborating with the manufacturer’s team to ensure that its prototype adheres to the model’s laid down procedures.

Could BMW i8 Replacement Come Soon?

A New Electrified BMW Supercar? Yes Please

It seems BMW’s affinity for electrified powertrains will extend to new supercars in the future. There have been a few rumors of BMW working on a new EV supercar, but now it seems more likely. BMW R&D boss Klaus Froehlich sat down with Autocar and one of the topics he discussed is an electric supercar or at least a hybrid supercar much like the i8.

“If you are an engineer, once in your life, you want to make a super-sports car,” Fröhlich told Autocar. “I think partial electrification will enable that.”

He pointed to the fact that BMW has the ability to build high-powered electric drive units, super light carbon fiber chassis, and high-performance gasoline engines. He said those three elements could be combined to make a supercar.

What Will it be Like?

According to Autocar, the new model could compete directly with Ferrari and McLaren. It would have a much larger gasoline engine paired with high-powered electric motors and a carbon fiber chassis much like the i8’s. The car should have 700 hp so it can edge out the M8’s 620 hp and put the car at the top of BMW’s M-Division lineup.

2011 BMW i8 Concept Gallery2011 BMW i8 Concept Gallery
An i8 replacement would be much more powerful.

That 700 hp mark sounds like a lot until you consider that Froehlich told Autocar the electric motors BMW produces should make 197 hp and 378 lb-ft of torque. Froehlich also said that BMW’s M-Division will eventually go fully electric, but that hybridization will play an important role moving forward.

With all that Froehlich said during the interview in mind, it’s clear that BMW sees electric cars as the future for high-performance vehicles. While BMW hasn’t officially released anything that explicitly says the i8 will be replaced by a much more powerful supercar, Froehlich’s interview is a clear sign of where things are heading.

Top 12 Best Cordless Electric Lawnmowers

E

very guy knows that having a pristine lawn is a true sign of manliness, so if your front yard is less than perfect it’s time to invest in a better mower! What could be more convenient than cordless electric lawnmowers? With no cables or gas needed, you’re able to cut your grass without any hold-ups economically or physically.

Just as effective and sometimes easier to use than standard versions, the latest cordless versions are powerful and speedy. In fact, your lawn might even be more fun to cut.

You may be pretty attached to your old gas-powered or corded mower. However, once you try the latest cordless versions you might be converted. No more fumes from gas or cords of other electric lawnmowers. Today’s cordless electric lawnmowers aren’t just suitable for people with small lawns either.

If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard of epic proportions, a cordless electric lawnmower is extremely effective.

Cordless electric lawnmowers are also safer to use. You won’t be wrestling with a cable that could so easily be severed by the spinning blade, or struggling with the heavier gas-powered machine. Rather, you’ll be putting yourself at less risk of injury.

The batteries charge pretty quickly, so you’ll be zipping through the grass in no time. You’ll be the envy of your neighbors after they see your yard and cordless electric lawnmower.

We’ve made it easier than ever for you to find the best cordless lawn mower for your needs. Instead of having to do all your own research and hard work, we offer everything you need to know before your purchase below.

What kind of questions should you be asking when thinking about buying a cordless lawn mower, however?

What are the main things to consider when buying cordless electric lawnmowers?

When searching for electric cordless lawnmowers for purchase, there are a number of things to consider. These things are important to note, as they can truly make or break a purchase. Often overlooked, people buy cordless electric lawnmowers without considering the big factors.

They look at the price and that’s it. We told you we did our research, so follow us a bit here. Let’s look at a few of the things you need to keep in mind when going after your new lawnmower.

Power And Size:

Cordless electric lawnmowers typically have either a 12V, 24V, or 36V battery pack. Some even have batteries as powerful as 40V. The power supplied by each battery-size depends on a number of variables, like the mower design and the conditions of your grass.

However, as a general rule of thumb, it is smart to choose a higher voltage battery as it will produce more power as well as a much longer running time.

As a basic guide, a 12V battery will give you up to 45 minutes of mowing time, and a 24V battery will give you up to 75 minutes of constant use. Meanwhile, a 36V battery should give you a full 90 minutes of lawn mowing per charge. Clearly, this is a drastic difference.

The size of your yard, for example, or your physical health may be a determining factor in the battery you need.

Weight:

The weight of cordless electric lawnmowers are going to be a serious consideration before you buy. The weight can vary wildly between different models. Some weigh as little as 30lbs while others weigh as much as 90lbs. Clearly, that’s a big difference!

While some models are self-propelled which make them easier to push around, it can still require some serious exertion to move around a 90lb mower!

If you have a small backyard, it’s probably best to look for a lighter weight mower that can be easily maneuvered in smaller spaces and turned in tight corners. A heavier model is best suited to larger lawns.

Blades:

Blades can either be made from plastic or steel. This is something you might want to think about before you make your investment. Plastic blades are often more affordable, however, they won’t be as long lasting or as strong and durable. A steel blade is the best choice as it will cut effectively through even tough or long grass without clogging.

These will also last a lot longer.

Steel blades can also be sharpened for a longer lifespan giving you even better value for money. The plastic types are an extremely good value for their worth. However, the real trouble with them is that they can often not cut as well as you’d like.

A weed-eater, for example, often uses plastic types for their cutting. However, you may not see an entire lawn mowed down with them. There’s a reason for this.

Noise Levels:

Are you the type to get up extra early to mow your lawn? Make sure you don’t disturb your neighbors with a model that promises low operating volumes. Cordless electric lawnmowers are less noisy than a gas-powered one anyway.

However, the best models are virtually inaudible from just 10 meters away, making them ideal for those Sunday morning grass-cuts!

There are some neighborhoods or states that have rules or laws on noise being made like mowing the lawn before certain hours of the day. That can be a huge issue for some, as they may not have the time to wait around for such a time. This can especially be an issue for weekends.

Having something with low-noise production can be a very useful thing to avoid these issues.

Battery Type:

The majority of cordless electric lawnmowers have a lead acid battery, but some have a Nickel Cadmium or Lithium-Ion battery. Avoiding the Nickel Cadmium batteries is often best since they aren’t able to hold the charge quite so well as other types.

The power fades when the charge is running out, so you aren’t even getting that last spurt as you do with most others.

It’s also important while considering the type of batteries you choose, to determine how long they will take to recharge. Some can recharge fully in as little as 30 minutes but some can take as long as 12 hours. This is not ideal if you’re in the middle of mowing your lawn!

Removable Batteries:

While some cordless electric lawnmowers have a fixed battery, others have removable ones. You need to decide which option is best for you. If you have removable ones you can keep a spare for zero downtime. This is especially useful if your lawn is very large.

It’s definitely worth thinking about before you buy. Removable, we often find, are the best types. Unlike riding lawnmowers, these batteries are not very large or heavy normally.

This means even your 10-year-old son could pick it up and put on to charge for you if you like to delegate. This also means it’s useful for the older man as much as the guy in his mid-20’s. Making this a perfect gift for the old man. Not the battery itself, but the lawnmower with the removable battery.

Drive Speed:

Some cordless electric lawnmowers have a variable drive speed while others have a fixed on. Some can even adjust their speed automatically, matching your pace. This makes it easier to maneuver your mower and requires a lot less effort from you. This is quite ideal if you’d rather not exert yourself too much when mowing your lawn!

This is also a great system to know because driving speed and pace normally gone can be really different. For taller guys, you can take longer strides. This means you need to consider the pace you normally can mow your lawn. If you can walk to the mailbox in 10 steps while your wife takes 30 to get there…you need to keep it in mind.

Not for her shorter issues but your stride. This affects how you’ll walk with the mower.

Self-propelled versions are often better due to their speed being already formed. Ideally, however, you want those that can adapt to the pace you go.

Power Indicators:

If your mower has a power indicator light, you’ll always know when your battery needs recharging. This will save you the problem of your battery running down completely. This done often could be damaging to your mower in the long term. It’ll also help to cut down on your downtime if you have a replaceable battery to switch when the time comes.

We always recommend having more than one battery. They are not incredibly costly like car batteries are, for example. This means you’ll always be prepared in the event you need it. Power Indicators are useful for a lot. There are some that might even turn off LED lights it might have to conserve power.

This will allow you to get to the last bit of mowing done with ease

Grass Discharge:

There are several different grass discharge designs for cordless electric lawnmowers, and some need additional extras like mulching inserts. Mulching will take additional battery power, so you won’t be able to cover as much of your lawn on a single charge. Remember to keep this in mind, as it’s more important than you might think.

Whether you prefer the idea of a standard side-discharge, a grass clipping bag or a mulching function, you are sure to find a model that suits you. Many of the top-selling models on the market even offer 3-in-1 functionality so you select any of these three options with ease.

Adjustability:

Can you easily adjust the cutting height and the handle height to suit your grass and your own height? The more adjustable your model the better for you! The best machines offer at least two handle height adjustments. If you’re taller or shorter than average you won’t have any problems in maneuvering your mower around your yard.

Also, when you can alter the cutting height to several different levels, you can easily accommodate the length and type of grass in your lawn. The simplicity of making adjustments is very important to know about and look for.

While many cordless electric lawnmowers can be adjusted, some require each wheel to be adjusted in height in turn. This is time-consuming and it can be tricky to get an even height on each wheel for a smooth cut. The best models offer a single handle-style adjustment so you can lift or drop the wheels as necessary with a single pull of the lever.

It’s more convenient and exact.

Storage:

Some models have foldable handles to make storage much easier. If you’re going to be storing your mower in a small garage or shed, you could benefit from one of these machines. If storage space is going to be really tight, look for a vertical storage model. It’s not a bad thing to look for one like this as it’s actually more responsible for you to do.

You simply need to look for one that can be conveniently stored away under a bench or other surface to save on floor room.

Brand:

Choosing between cordless electric lawnmowers from the best-known and most reliable brands on the market will make investing a lot of money in a garden tool worth it. Also true of this is that it can also be difficult to do. However, these brands typically offer proper peace of mind, something we all want to have.

If you make the mistake of buying from an inferior brand, you may pay less in an initial outlay.

However, over time, your value for money will be significantly reduced. When you buy from one of the biggest and most trustworthy manufacturers, you can rest assured that you’ll be benefiting heavily. Not just from outstanding workmanship, but also strong construction and impressive performance.

You’ll also be getting great customer service on average with these places.

Price:

Unfortunately, cordless electric lawnmowers are generally more expensive than a corded or gas-powered model. However, you’ll save money in the long run. The reduced maintenance and long lifespan of these machines mean that you’ll enjoy a longer-lasting and more efficient model for your money.

Remember that you’ll be getting what you pay for. Meaning, even if you’re on a tight budget it’s still important to invest in the best model that you can afford. This is so that you can be sure of getting the best value and avoid making a costly mistake.

How much electricity do cordless electric lawnmowers use?

If you’re wondering about whether to switch from a gas-powered mower to an electric one, you might be wondering whether you can make any cost savings by making the change. The main costs of operating any mower are its fuel, whether that be gas or electric power.

A gas-powered mower costs around $1.50 for every half acre that you mow whereas corded electric lawnmowers cost around $0.50 to cover the same area. A cordless mower will only cost around $0.10 to cover a half acre of backyard – a significant saving.

If we’re going to put it in the most simple terms, imagine your yard measures a half acre. You mow it 16 times a year, on average. You’ll end up spending around $24 if you have a gas mower as insane as that is. Meanwhile, you’d only spend $8 if you have a corded electrically powered mower.

That does not even count today’s models, where you’d invest only $1.60 in that time. You can easily see how much you can save!

What is the best way to clean an electric lawnmower?

Maintaining cordless electric lawnmowers are pretty important to their overall lifespan. After all, if you don’t look after your investment you’re going to have to buy a new one pretty quickly. When it comes to cleaning your mower, you need to first know when to clean your machine.

It’s always best to do it when you’ve just finished trimming your lawn. Ensure you’ve turned the mower off and that all the excess grass and residue has been taken out from the blade.

Remember that the blade is super sharp, so you need to take care when handling it to prevent injury. You need to clean the blade thoroughly following every use to get rid of soil and grass which could dull the blade. You should use a plastic or wooden tool to get rid of these residues. Don’t use anything metal as this could damage the blade.

The mower deck is another key part of your mower. You need to make sure that you only use a plastic or wooden tool to remove the residue from this area. This is so that none of the protective paint is removed. If you do scrap any of the paint off, you could end up with rust on your mower.

Cleaning the mower’s ventilation system is very important and best done after each use. You need to make certain that enough air can flow through the mower to cool the parts that get hot during use. If these slots aren’t clean, your mower won’t run smoothly and your machine will overheat.

You can clean these ventilation slots easily with a soft brush or cloth. Some use compressed air to clear away residue blocking airways, which has been effective.

The Nuts And Bolts Of It

Bolts and nuts loosen with time, and if you end up losing a piece during mowing there could be a major problem. Not only could your mower be less functional, but you could also end up mowing over the lost piece and damaging the mower deck. This could even cause an injury for you.

Check every fastener after use to make sure they’re fully tightened.

The wheels won’t need too much maintenance but you need to make sure they’re clear of debris so that they can rotate properly during use. Use some oil a couple of times a year to lubricate the wheel axis. You won’t need to oil the rest of your mower though – that’s something that you only need to do for a gas mower.

Remember if you’re using water to clean your mower not to put too much water onto the battery. This will just cause damage. Also, whenever possible, allowing your machine to dry outdoors naturally in the sunshine is best, However, if that isn’t possible, always make sure that you dry it with a clean cloth before storing it away.

Leaving excess water on its metal surfaces such as the blades will only result in rust over the winter. That said, remember to clean it well before storing it away for the cold months. This will only be best for the machine when you take it back out to cut months later.

What are the differences between Electric lawnmowers vs. gas lawnmowers?

If you still aren’t sure whether it’s worth giving up your gas mower in exchange for the latest cordless electric model here’s a quick overview of the differences.

Cordless electric lawnmowers are a good choice for those looking to save money, as gas-powered cost more to operate. As you’ll already have seen above, there are some significant savings costs when you opt for a cordless mower over a standard corded one.

That’s even more when you compare running costs with a gas powered machine.

Electric mowers are also a more eco-friendly option. They produce no greenhouse gas emissions, unlike gas-powered mowers. Meaning your carbon footprint will be significantly reduced. Since this is something that we should be more aware of these days, it’s pretty important to take this into consideration when choosing your next lawn mower.

Another added advantage of opting for a cordless model is that the amount of maintenance is reduced when compared to a gas mower. There’ll be no more oiling necessary, and electric mowers are quicker and easier to clean, especially at the end of the season when you’re ready to store your machine away for the winter.

Cordless Electric Lawnmowers Take Little Maintenance Compared To Gas-Powered Models

Ongoing maintenance costs are also reduced with cordless electric lawnmowers. You won’t need to buy gasoline on a regular basis of course, but there are other components which also will be eliminated from your gardening budget. Spark plugs, oil, and fuel filters are just some of the costs that will be eradicated when you opt for an electric mower.

This definitely more than makes up for the difference in initial outlay between a gas mower and a cordless one.

You’ll also find cordless electric lawnmowers are often quicker and easier to use. Much lighter than a heavy gas-powered mower, you’ll save time and energy that would otherwise have been spent wrestling with your machine. Therefore, there’ll be less at risk of injuring yourself as you mow your backyard.

There are, however, a couple of drawbacks to bear in mind. Even the most powerful cordless electric lawnmowers won’t have the industrial strength power of a gas powered model. If you have especially long or thick grass, a gas mower could be a better choice.

Also, if you have an extra large lawn, you might find that you have to recharge your battery a couple of times before you’ve finished the job. This problem can be resolved by investing in a model with a replaceable battery so that you can pop a fully charged spare in for zero downtime.

1) Greenworks Brushless Cordless 40V Mower

The design is strong and sturdy and with its durable construction. You can subject this lawnmower to all the rigors of tackling your garden on a regular basis without having to worry about damage or wear and tear.

Although this mower is lighter than many of its competitors, it isn’t the most maneuverable model on the market. However, this slight downside is outweighed by its many benefits. Its 21” mowing deck is just one of the advantages that helps you to speed up your mowing time.

The 14 Best Electronic Drum Kits

D

o you fancy yourself as the next Dave Grohl, yet don’t want to totally wreck your relationship with your neighbors? It’s possible that electronic drum kits might be a good compromise. Offering you the chance to thump out some killer beats but without the ear-crushing noise, it’s a win-win for everyone. However, electronic drum kits aren’t just the back-up for proper drums.

Increasingly, they’re being chosen over the real deal.

Why? If you think about it, going electronic is an obvious choice in delivering superior sound and audio enhancements. On top of this, you won’t crucify your back trying to drag them around. Some types of digital drums almost look like acoustic drums sets.

Many professional-grade electronic drum kits offer the same quality of sound as normal drums. In some cases, it can be even better.

With the ability to hook up to computers and cell phone apps, the possibilities for electronic drums are endless. There’s a wide variety of electronic drum kits, and not every brand and model offers the same authentic sound. At Men’s Gear, we’ve done all the prep for you.

We’ve put together a list of the hottest electronic drum kits on the market today that we’re sure you’ll love.

What are the main things to consider when buying an electronic drum kit?

If you already know how to play drums, you might have an idea of what you’d like to see from a list of electronic drum kits. However, there might be some aspects you haven’t considered. With an almost limitless list of drum and percussion sounds found in electronic drum kits, it can be hard to think of what else you might like.

Consider the playing experience first. Playing an electronic drum isn’t as simple as banging a couple of sticks on a table. Instead, its electronic surface is a highly complex piece of equipment with different sensors and systems that provide proper feedback.

The best electronic drum kits contain more than one sensor, also referred to as a zone, per pad. This ensures that the sound produced bears the closest resemblance to what the drummer did. No matter how you hit it, the top-quality kits reflect the sounds you’ve made.

Do you need something that’s small and compact or do you got the space for a larger playing surface? Size is an important factor in this market. The number of drums in a kit will influence the price, so you might prefer to start out with small.

Then you can add in custom drums as you go along. Meanwhile, others like to buy it all together at the start.

The final piece of the puzzle is the drum module. This is the bit that adds in all the fancy sounds. If you want your snare to sound like a funk guitar, this is where you’ll need to look. Top modules have a wide range of percussion sounds as well as both presets and custom tracks.

What are the main brands of electronic drum kits?

Electronic drum kits first came to the fore in the 1980s. However, unlike certain other cringe-worthy trends, they’ve proved their staying power. As an alternative to regular drums, electronic pads can be either a practice set or a viable alternative for your live sets.

Some drummers swear by the top of the range electronic drum kits and prefer them to a traditional set.

There are some names who have been big in the world of electronic drums since the start, such as Roland and Yamaha. They still make some of the best electronic drum kits around today. However, they’ve been joined by other great brands, such as Alesis.

What’s outstanding about these three brands is that they offer a full range of portable electronic drum kits without compromising on quality.

It does not matter if it’s a basic, entry-level kit or a mega-bucks top of the range model. The best brands seem to have made a commitment to delivering drums which are deeply satisfying to play. Most are even packed full of features.

Are electronic drum kits easy to set up?

Like everything else, there’s the good, the bad, and the downright ugly! In theory, with a properly thought out construction as well as clear instructions, there shouldn’t be many problems in setting up your electronic drum kit.  That is regardless of the size it happens to be.

However, not all brands are created equal and some seem to consider it their mission to make life as tricky as possible!

Be sure to check out the reviews for certain electronic drum kits for the particular model you’re interested in. You’ll see if any previous customer has had any problems in setting it up. This is a great place to start if you’ve already got an idea about which model you want.

As a general rule, electronic drum kits are simple and easy to put together. You will find a basic tubular frame upon which the various pads are mounted.

In some electronic drum kits for beginners, you might even have some components which have been pre-fixed into position. This makes it even easier to slot the parts together. The instructions will vary between brands, but some include photographs.

Some kits are designed to be particularly portable and can simply fold and slide away. Meanwhile, others may need some pads removed or screws loosened first. If you’re keen to avoid having to repeat the assembly or expect to be moving your kit around regularly, look out for a model that’s been designed with portability in mind.

1) Alesis DM6 USB Eight-Piece Beginner’s Electronic Drum Kit

In case you’re wondering if electronic drum kits of the world are right for you, the Alesis DM6 lets you try it out without breaking the bank in the process. A decent set of drums which will give you the feel of how electronics work. Alesis’ DM6 kit has all the basics you need.

Included in the kit are 8 pieces to the set. That includes a dual-zone snare, three single-zone toms, three cymbals, and a kick pad.

The dual zone on the snare is a big bonus on a no-frills buy as it provides variety on the sounds that can be produced. However, you’ll have to buy your headphones separately from the kit. That’s no big deal, as quite often the ones included aren’t the best quality anyway.

An LED display makes using the model super-easy with push-button function and clear labels.

There are 108 different sounds which Alesis quirkily calls “voices.” Whatever vibe you want to create, you’ve got it covered in this kit. There are 10 presets programmed into the Alesis DM6 system. That includes the usual jazz, rock, Latin, etc.

However, there are an extra five slots for you to make your own too.

If that wasn’t enough, it’s simple to hook your drum kit up to a computer. That will allow you to extend the sounds. Whenever you hit a pad, the sound you’ve selected in your library will be heard. This is pretty cool, right?

With a small and compact size, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this kit wouldn’t stand up to a heavy session. However, for such a diminutive kit it’s surprisingly strong. When you’re busting out your best moves, the kit responds accordingly.

This is, of course, something you’d expect a traditional acoustic kit to do.

The mesh snare gives great feedback and you can adjust the tension to your own preference. Meanwhile, the other pads feel realistic too.

Importantly, the rubbers on this kit aren’t too hard. This means you won’t feel like your wrists are about to drop off after a session. Alongside the 10” snare, three mesh toms, two rack toms, floor tom, and cymbals is a superb module. This offers a choice of different genres from hip-hop and rock through to pop and punk.

The metronome and playback functions are useful for any drummer to critique their own performance. However, it’s the intelligent coach function that really stands out. Though designed to help newbies get their timing straight, it’s a top tool for pros who want to polish off their performance too.

7) Yamaha DTX532K Electronic Drums

Yamaha returns, this time with a budget-busting DTX532K that is simply brimming full of features. Once you’ve whipped out your drumsticks and had a quick blast, the first thing you’ll notice is the incredible surface of the pads. This is due to the special silicone gel material (TCS) that Yamaha has developed.

It is prized for its ability to provide a greater sensitivity than other electronic pads, while also offering almost silent play.

This is both its greatest strength and a weakness simultaneously. You’ll need to ensure you put proper weight to your strikes with the kit. As the wrong version could cause you to not get the planned sound you intended. Proper usage will get it every time.

That said, it might take some play-throughs to get used to.

Included in the box, you’ll find a triple-zone 8” snare, three single-zone toms, 13” cymbals, and kick pad. Once again, the module here is a stand-out part of the kit. It offers training features that include scoring algorithms enabling you to track your own progress.

This is handy for pros and newbies alike, with the terrific performance of the kit overall offering an excellent training package for everyone.

8) Yamaha DTX400K

Among the best of Yamaha’s electronic drum kits is the DTX400K. Interestingly, it isn’t as high in price as some might assume. Yamaha marketed as a starter kit, but it is more than that. Though it’s a simple option, it offers a strong performance.

Professionals can easily use it as a backup set, or when they need to practice without making too much noise.

An entry model for Yamaha, the whole DTX range is built with quality. The set-up is quick and easy with some elements pre-mounted, and it’s fully foldable for easy transportation. The DTX400K has five drum pads. This includes a hi-hat and two cymbals.

The only problem with the layout is the snare is rigidly fixed at a specific distance from the hi-hat. That can mean an awkward playing position at times.

However, there are no grumbles about the performance overall. The kit accurately reflects the full spectrum of sounds, including soft strikes. Budget restrictions meant no LED display for easy function. Unless you’re able to memorize an entire user manual, you’ll have to keep referring to it while you get to know your new kit.

If you only plan on using this drum kit periodically, this could be a real issue. Though without an LED display, the module is incredibly top-quality. It offers 297 sounds and 10 customizable kits; great for the price. There’s also built-in lessons and training exercises to challenge your drumming and maximize your potential.

9) Alesis Mesh 8-Piece Electronic Drum Kit

The ever-reliable Alesis seems to always offer great options with their electronic drum kits. This might be one of their best, for sure. For the drumming purists out there who long for the natural feel of acoustics, this pick is for you. What’s special about this kit is the all-mesh pads.

This gives a much more realistic feeling of playing. There’s more with both the snare and the tom pads.

They offer dual-zone sensitivity, heightening performance, and enabling separate sounds from the rim and the head. The frame is fairly standard and robust enough for what’s needed. You might be inwardly sighing at the thought of assembling it, as it can be a bit much.

However, the considerate folk over at Alesis have included a photographic guide to make your life easier. The instructions truly help out a lot, so we consider this a big “W” in the win column for Alesis.

Once it’s up and assembled, this electronic drum kit is a pretty nifty-looking model. It might even command a second glance on aesthetics alone. The functionality of the module matches the appearance, delivering a whopping 600+ different sounds, 60 backing tracks, and 70 presets.

With excellent connectivity, you can bash the skins to your own tracks on your MP3 player. If that wasn’t enough to sell you on the kit, there’s a sequencer to play back what you’ve recorded.

10) Roland TD-11K Electronic Drum Kit

The Roland TD-11K certainly elevates electronic drums to the next level. Offering mind-blowing technology and a real commitment to quality, even the most experienced drummers would struggle to tell this from an acoustic. Only real instruments are used for the instrument sounds.

To most, this enhances the overall effect of the drum kit. It’s not the cheapest model you’ll ever find but the quality is exceptional. It’s so good, you could comfortably use this set for recording or live sets.

This usability is enhanced by the fact that the module allows you to control every sound. The drum kit allows you to add a range of specific parameters for every available drum. For this price point you can’t have everything, so the trade-off is the noise.

Without mesh pads, these are a little louder than others which could be a problem for some.

If a silent operation is critical for you, rather than switch to another model, you could opt to slip rubber tips over your sticks. This helps with bounce-back and muffles the noise too. To tighten up your personal performance, the coaching mode on the module is a big help with exercises and functions that will help you hit the sweet spot.

11) Alesis Nitro Mesh Kit

If you’ve had the joy of playing on an all-mesh drum kit, the name of the Alesis Nitro Mesh Kit could well get your pulse racing. It’s certainly an entertaining drum kit that’s guaranteed to help you get your groove. However, it’s important to make a few things clear from the outset.

Although the snare and the toms are now made from mesh, the cymbals and kick pad are still rubber.

This may be a bit of a let-down, given the name. In reality, very few kits offer total mesh pads over every single drum. The mesh heads do indeed offer a big advantage to drummers, providing very little noise. This means they can be played whenever the mood strikes.

There’s a natural feel to drumming on mesh but be aware that these pads are smaller than some of the other high-end Alesis models.

Although they’re not insanely tiny, you might struggle to find your rhythm originally. It might take a few play-throughs to get used to them. There’s a total of eight elements to the drum kit in total but the snare is disappointingly only a single-zone.

You won’t get a separate hi-hat stand either, but that’s also not unusual for this price bracket.

12) Roland TD-25KV Electronic Drum Kit

If you’re ready to drop some serious cash, then the Roland TD-25KV is an electronic drum kit to look out for. You’ll have to be prepared to go way beyond the budget range. However, in return, you’ll be treated to a drum kit that is a pleasure to play.

It’s not the absolute top of the range but it includes the majority of features that you’d find in the very best models.

The interface on the module is easy to use and intuitive but its greatest strength is that it allows customization in a variety of ways. Only 18 kits are automatically included but you’ll be able to expand this greatly by downloading more or customizing samples.

The snare and the toms are all made from mesh, not rubber, offering unparalleled sensitivity and responsiveness.

This gives the feeling that you’re playing a real set of drums, rather than an electronic version. The cymbals only add to this, as they have a natural swinging motion on top of a cloth head on the kick pad. Coaching functions help to improve your timing and control and there’s simple connectivity too.

This makes it possible for you to jam along with your top tunes whenever you get the urge.

13) Yamaha DTX 760K Electronic Drums

In a final entry for Yamaha, we’ve arguably saved the best until last. The DTX 760K is a premium model that will have you cleaning out your bank account to pay for it. However, we’d say it’s worth every dime. Inside the box, you’ll find a nine-piece kit which includes one snare, three toms, four cymbals, and a kick pad.

The DTX pads are a class apart, providing a realistic and natural feel to every beat. This is only helped by the special TCS silicone surface. Intelligent sensors on both the head and the rim deliver dual-zone functionality for more precise results.

The module connects to other media effortlessly, opening up excellent software which provides a variety of options such as playback and audio adjustment.

The module itself is a thing of beauty with an eye-watering 1,268 drums sounds and a total of 1,396 voices. If this isn’t enough, you can load up your own samples instead using a USB stick. Clearly, drumming never felt more unique!

Porsche Taycan Specs Revealed

With Porsche steeping up their focus on electric technology, they finally released details regarding the new electric supercar, the Taycan, and they’re impressive.

It’s a dual-motor setup between the axles, together producing more than 600 horsepower or 440kW(!),

We opted for a permanently excited synchronous motor(PSM) in the TaycanThey combine a high energy density with strong sustained performance and maximum efficiency.”  – Heiko Mayer, Porsche drive unit project leader

The 800-volt setup produces a 500km range on a single charge, with a 0-60 time of fewer than 3.5 seconds. There are 100 prototypes available and the synchronous motors have been tested in their LeMans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid.

The most intriguing part is the packaging of the batteries itself. Right now, that’s the hindering part of an electric car due to the weight and the amount required to power a car.

They placed it near the floor so that it has a low center of gravity with a balance of keeping weight low, optimal temperatures met, and safety in mind. Each cell has 4 volts and 400 cell pack to power the four wheels. It can fast-charge 400 km range in about 15 minutes (impressive!).

They’ll be using the Taycan as proving grounds for battery technology and monitoring the performance and if any degradation happens.

If you’re worried about charging, Porsche is working with other car manufacturers to have standardized fast-charging stations in Europe, having a station reachable within 100-150 km. The future is here and the Taycan will spearhead the way to a greener future!

Volkswagen: Pikes Peak Hill Climb Record Holder

Over the weekend, Volkswagen sent out their all-electric prototype to crush the Pikes Peak Hill Climb record. A century-old race that has 12 miles and 156 curves, Pikes Peak has been setting laps and letting cars chew up miles for greatness up top.

Jalopnik reports that the 670-horsepower Volkswagen I.D. R prototype set a climbing record in under eight minutes (7:57.148, to be exact),

The goal was to beat the EV record set by Rhys Millen in a 1,595-HP car in 2016, which was 8 minutes and 57 seconds. The I.D. R, instead, became the first car to run Pikes Peak in under eight minutes, beating the all-time record for any car set by Sébastien Loeb in 2013. The I.D. R ran a 7:57.148 with prior Pikes Peak champion Romain Dumas at the wheel, compared to the 8:13.878 Loeb ran in an 875-HP Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car.

For something that was developed in 9 months, Volkswagen worked with Porsche to create an efficient hill-climbing monster. There are some amazing engineering involved in this record-breaking attempt which included:

  • Two electric motors producing 670 horsepower; one in each axle
  • Aerodynamic design to produce more downforce because the air becomes less dense as you climb up in altitude
  • Charging stations powered by glycerol, which is a bio-diesel byproduct (More on that here)

Kudos to Volkswagen in pursuing electric technology for racing and pushing the limits on what it can do. It’s amazing because they’re paving the way for the future.

Electric Lamborghini? Maybe Next Time

So just when we thought we’d have a competitor to the Tesla Model S, we get terrible news. Auto News reports that Lamborghini has no plans to go full electric because battery technology today can’t provide the power that Lamborghini customers expect. Maurizio Reggiani, Director Research and Development, says,

“Our target is to deliver a super sports car, and these specifications don’t exist with a battery package in terms of energy and power”

Right now, Lamborghini is waiting on vast improvements in electric technology before going down the path of producing a full-electric supercar. The hard part is that roaring V10 and V12s provide something that electric cars don’t: sound which can convert to a supercar’s ‘soul’.

Is this nonsense or do you feel that a supercar should emote something to the driver to be connected? Is brute force enough to provide that emotion?

GM’s European Opel division may eventually go all-electric

General Motors’ Opel division in Europe may transform itself into an all-electric vehicle maker by 2030. Granted, a lot can happen between now and then, including a potential buyout by French automaker PSA Group. Regardless, Opel appears to view its electric future beyond the Ampera-e, which is the sister vehicle to the Chevrolet Bolt, and more like Tesla.

Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann indicated that focusing on electric drivetrains would be a superior strategy to expanding its EV technology while pushing forward with conventional drivetrains, says Automotive News Europe, citing comments Neumann made to German publication Manager Magazin. General Motors could make the decision to move towards an all-electric vehicle line for Opel as soon as May.

Of course, that depends on whether Opel is bought out by PSA, the parent country to Peugeot and Citroen. PSA is in talks to buy General Motors’ Opel and Vauxhall divisions, though government and labor representatives in Germany have expressed concerns over potential job losses from the proposed buyout, Reuters says.

Regardless, GM has hinted at expanding its electric-vehicle line far beyond the Bolt, which has a 238-mile single-charge range and debuted late last year. Mary Barra, in an interview with CNET, said the Bolt’s all-electric platform could be applied to a “huge range of vehicles,” though wasn’t specific about additional EV models.

Opel first showed off its Ampera-e at the Paris Motor Show last fall. The name of the model raised some eyebrows because the Ampera badge had been previously used by Opel for the sister version of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in. Either way, Opel is looking to take on Renault for electric-vehicle sales supremacy across the Pond.
