The Coronavirus and the Lockdown of the Car Industry

The rapid spread of the coronavirus is taking large parts of the world by storm. The car industry is hard hit and also at GTspirit we feel the effects of the coronavirus. Our GTspirit Tour 2020 is postponed and due to the many travel restrictions, closed borders and recommendation to stay home most car launches and other car related events have been cancelled. We wish all of our readers the best and recommend you to stay home and take care of loved ones and high-risk groups.

It is clear the coronavirus will have a large impact on car manufacturers, car buyers and car journalists alike. Many car manufacturers already shutdown their operations or are planning to do so in the very near future. Here is a short overview of the situation on Wednesday 18th of March 2020.

Lamborghini and Ferrari closed their factories

Lamborghini idled its plant in Sant’Agata Bolognese last week, and Ferrari followed suit at facilities in Maranello and Modena over the weekend. Both are located in the particularly hard hit areas in Northern Italy.

Bugatti launches Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport online, factory closure nearing

Bugatti planned to launch the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport in Geneva but with the Geneva Motor Show and all other major motor shows in the near future cancelled they have decided to launch the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport online. Recent reports also suggest the Bugatti factory in Molsheim, in the hard-hit North-Eastern part of France, will be closed soon.

The most recent Bugatti statement:

“The COVID-19 pandemic and measures to contain the outbreak are having an unprecedented impact on public life. The current situation affects our team and our work no less than the rest of France, Europe and the world.

We recommend that you follow the instructions given by the authorities in your place of residence and the WHO to protect yourself and others from the virus. Priority number one: please stay healthy.’

Aston Martin closes facilities to visitors

We have taken the decision to close our facilities to all visitors, so if you were planning a factory tour at Gaydon for example, please contact your Aston Martin Dealer who will confirm when we have re-opened the factory for visitors. We have also postponed or cancelled our upcoming F1™ experiences and Art of Living events, if you were planning to join us our team will be in touch in the coming days to confirm next steps.

Porsche stops production due to the coronavirus

As from the coming week (23rd of March), Porsche will suspend production for an initial period of two weeks. By taking this step, the sports car manufacturer is responding to the significant acceleration in the rate of infection caused by the coronavirus and the resultant measures implemented by the relevant authorities. In addition to the primary protection of the workforce, bottlenecks in global supply chains no longer allow orderly production. At the same time, Porsche is preparing for a decline in demand and securing its financial strength with these decisions. The parent plant in Zuffenhausen and the production location in Leipzig will be closed from Saturday (21 March 2020). These steps have been taken as part of an orderly process and in close cooperation with the works council.

BMW halts production in Europe and South-Africa

Due to the rapid expansion of the coronavirus BMW is reducing its production and prepares for a significant drop in revenue and profit for 2020. The measures include the stop of production in Europe and at the Rosslyn factory in South-Africa from today until at least the 19th of April. In other factories part-time working could be implemented to adjust the production capacity to the current situation.

Daimler suspends most of the production in Europe

On Tuesday 17th of March Daimler announced:

Due to the worsening situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Daimler Group has decided today to suspend the majority of its production in Europe, as well as work in selected administrative departments, for an initial period of two weeks. By taking this action, the company is following the recommendations of international, national and local authorities. The suspension applies to Daimler’s car, van and commercial vehicle plants in Europe and will start this week. Connected to this is an assessment of global supply chains, which currently cannot be maintained to their full extent. An extension of this measure will depend on further developments. Wherever operations need to be continued, the company will take appropriate precautions to prevent the infection of its employees.

Audi stops production until end of the week

Audi announced they are closing all their factories until end of the week. The spread of the coronavirus also affects the parts delivery making regular production soon impossible.

Volkswagen suspends European production

Latest statement by Volkswagen:

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is gradually suspending production at its European plants. This will also affect Volkswagen Group Components plants. This is the brand’s response to the impending rapid decline in demand on the automotive markets. Risks in connection with suppliers’ supply chains are also increasing. This is due to the significantly accelerated rate of infection by coronavirus and the resulting measures taken by the authorities. Initially, the factories are therefore expected to remain closed for two weeks. For the affected German sites, the measures are to apply from the end of the late shift on Thursday.

Fiat Chrylser Automobiles

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced on Monday it will close most of its factories in Europe including production facilities for Alfa Romeo and Maserati. This includes factories in Italy, Serbia and Poland.

Mansory Cabrera: Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Gets New Looks

Mansory recently got hold of a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. The result is the Mansory Cabrera. Mansory is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and the Cabrera is the first several special edition models.

Limited to just 3 copies, the Mansory Cabrera is built on the platform of the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. The name derives from the Spanish Fighting Bull breed, the Cabrera. The name seems fitting, with the Mansory body kit creating a wild and aggressive new look!

The basis of the Mansory conversion is a complete replacement of the body kit with new carbon fibre panels. At the front, the deep front air intakes remain, the front splitter design now features air outlets at the side with smaller dive planes.

New LED daytime running lights are fitted below a set of redesigned headlights. The bonnet is redesigned with quick release clips. Fender vents finish it off. Towards the side, the door panels are redesigned and the side skirts get a more aggressive look.

The rear changes are the most extreme. The rear spoiler is bigger, featuring a central aerodynamic panel. The exhausts have been re-routed to exit higher up with two additional tailpipes. The rear diffuser is deeper and the rear mesh is replaced with stealth-look mesh.

The new body kit adds 4 cm of width to the Aventador. The 6.5-litre V12 engine also receives a re-design. It now generates 810 hp and 780 Nm of torque. As a result, the Mansory Cabrera hits 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds with a top speed of 355 km/h.

Mansory Reveals Bentley Continental GT Cabriolet V8

Mansory have been unseasonably quiet during the period of the Geneva Motor Show 2020. We can only assume that after the show got cancelled, they decided to hold back some of their planned releases for another event. What we did get to see is a unique take on the Bentley Continental GT Cabriolet V8.

In true Mansory fashion, the Bentley has been re-clothed with a carbon fibre body. The carbon fibre has been moulded into an extreme shape. The front gets a redesigned bumper with a brand new black grille and a new hood. The side receives new design lines and an extended wheel vent. The rear wheel arch gets green pinstripes which accent the swollen look.

At the rear, Mansory offers a new fixed rear spoiler, a new rear bumper, diffuser and quad tailpipes. It’s not massively extreme by Mansory’s high standards, however, it does leave a lasting impression. The mixture of matte carbon fibre and matte black.

It’s the interior where things get interesting on the Mansory Bentley Cabriolet GT Cabriolet V8. Finished in chrome oxide green, it is distinctive. It has been crafted from scratch with the colour applied tot he steering wheel, the great lever and the centre console.

The Mansory Bentley Cabriolet GT Cabriolet V8 gets a power boost too. An ECU module boosts the twin-turbocharged V8 to 640 hp and 890 Nm of torque. It now hits 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. The question is, would you want one?

Bentley Mulliner Bacalar Revealed As Mulliner Takes Charge

The Bentley Bacalar is the most exclusive and bespoke Bentley of the modern era. It was revealed today at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, England. It was due to be revealed in Geneva this morning, yet with the cancellation of the show, Bentley executives decided to launch the car electronically instead!

The two-seat Bacalar marks a return to bespoke coachbuilding for Bentley Mulliner, one of the oldest names in coachbuilding. It also marks a return to bespoke limited edition custom models for Bentley, a stark change from the mass-production Continental GT and the Bentayga.

The release of the new model coincides with an announcement that Bentley will utilise Bentley Mulliner through a new three-portfolio future: Classic, Collections and Coachbuilt.

The Bacalar is the first model to join the Coachbuilt sector. It is named after a lake called Laguna Bacalar in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. The ‘Barchetta’ design “delivers the ultimate expression of open-top, driver-focused grand touring”. Top-down motoring sits at the heart of this two-seater.

The Bentley Bacalar uses an enhanced 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine producing 659 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Bentley has incorporated a rear-biased advanced Active All-Wheel-Drive System together with an adaptive chassis which uses Bentley’s intelligent, 48-volt Dynamic Ride System.

Bentley Mulliner Bacalar

Just 12 individual Bacalar’s will be released. Each one is designed, engineered and handcrafted to individual customers’ individual tastes. If you want one, tough, they are all already allocated.

The design uses the DNA and sustainable materials debuted in the EXP 100 GT concept car, launched last summer to celebrate Bentley’s centenary. The materials include ethically-sourced materials such as rice husk ash paint and 5,000-year-old Riverwood.

The Bacalar is also the first model to be produced in the world’s first certified carbon neutral factory. Each customer will get a bespoke Schedoni luggage to fit the rear compartment.

Range Topping Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe and Cabriolet Debut

One of the biggest launches not to happen at Geneva this year is the Porsche 911 Turbo S. The first of the true performance 911’s, this is the one people have been waiting for. Let us tell you, it does not disappoint!

The new Porsche 911 Turbo S has been revealed, but we are yet to hear anything about the lesser Turbo. You will be pleased to hear that Porsche has not downsized, the Turbo S gets a new version of the iconic 3.8-litre boxer engine. It includes two VTG turbochargers, which deliver 650 hp, 70 hp more than its predecessor. Torque is now rated at 800 Nm and the eight-speed PDK helps translate those figures into a 2.7 second 100 km/h sprint. Top speed is unchanged at 330 km/h.

The new engine gets a redesigned charge air cooling system, new turbochargers and electrically adjustable wastegate flaps. Piezo injectors improve responsiveness, as does a new intake system. The air filters are now situated in the rear wings with four intakes overall.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S gets larger with an increase of 45 mm at the front axle and 20 mm at the rear axle. The modified track widths, developed aerodynamics and new mixed-size tyres contribute to its dynamics. The track is now 42 mm wider at the front axle and 10 mm wider at the rear axle.

The adaptive aerodynamics include controlled cooling air flaps at the front. The larger rear wing has been designed for greater downforce. It has 20-inch tyres with unique 255/35 dimensions at the front and 21-inch 315/30 tyres at the rear.

The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports chassis has been lowered by 10 mm and a sports exhaust system has been fitted with adjustable flaps. The Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel-drive system is now capable of delivering up to 500 Nm of torque to the front wheels.

Mercedes-Benz E Class Facelift Revealed: Sedan, AMG and All Terrain

The Mercedes-Benz E Class has been released today, at a digital event taking place instead of the planned Geneva Motor Show 2020 release. Three models have been announced, the Mercedes-Benz E Class Sedan, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan and Estate and the Mercedes-Benz All-Terrain.

What’s New

LED headlights are now standard across the range. Multibeam LED and Ultra Range options are also available.

At the back, there is a new bumper, split tail lamps and a new boot lid. The taillamps have also received a revised look.

New colours are available for the range including high-tech silver, graphite grey metallic and mojave silver.

Inside, there are new colour combinations magma grey/neva grey (Avantgarde), black/nut brown (Exclusive) and magma grey/macchiato beige (Exclusive), and trim in open-pore silver ash wood, burr walnut fondant, brushed aluminium and aluminium with a carbon grain.

Mercedes-Benz E Class Facelift

New seats are also available with a slightly amended design. An interesting feature is the adaptive driver’s seat adjustment which uses your measurements to put the cockpit into a perfect position.

Mercedes-Benz has used the opportunity to pack the E Class with new technology. It includes hands-off recognition for the semi-automated systems, meaning you no longer have to touch the steering wheel to continue in automated modes.

An interesting new steering wheel design incorporates the latest steering wheel MBUX controls. Three versions are available, an all-leather steering wheel, a wood-leather combination and a supersport version.

Active Brake Assist is now standard. The Driving Assistance Package is expanded with the Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Distance Assist with LiveTraffic Information and Active Stop-and-Go Assist all updated.

The latest MBUX multimedia system also debuts with two 10.25-inch screens or 12.3-inch screens as an option.

Mercedes-Benz E Class

The E-Class moves slightly upmarket with Avantgarde Line exterior tweaks available as standard. For most people, this will mean more chrome and the central star at the front. The grille now features two chrome louvres and black verticle struts.

The next step up is the Exclusive Line which gets an upright star on the bonnet and increased chrome elements on the front bumper. AMG Line is also available with a new bumper. All three models get a new power dome.

Seven models are available from launch as plug-in hybrids. New options include a four-cylinder petrol model combined with an integrated starter motor for an additional electronic boost. An inline six-cylinder M256 engine is available in the E-Class for the first time and the top of the range diesel is a six-cylinder OM656 unit.

Mercedes-AMG E 53

The E 53 refreshes a model which was only recently released. No surprise that there are no changes for the drivetrain. The E53 gets the majority of the above upgrades but with some specific AMG features.

A new AMG grille, flat LED headlights, a new front bumper, LED taillights, a revised rear apron and diffuser and a new choice of AMG-specific wheels complete the design package. The bonnet gets dual powerdomes and an optional AMG Night Package adds dark high-gloss.

Otherwise, the E 53 maks do with the 3.0 litre 6-cylinder engine with a 435 hp output and 520 Nm of torque. The EQ motor adds an additional 52 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It is still capable of 4.5-second sprints to 100 km/h. A new AMG Drivers Package lifts the top speed from 250 km/h to 270 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz All-Terrain

In terms of design, the All-Terrain adds a new chrome finish to the radiator grille and the skid plate.

2020 BMW M235i Gran Coupe Review

The BMW M235i Gran Coupe is a little difficult to wrap your head around if you’re a traditionalist. For one, it is not very closely related to the outgoing, and soon to be replaced, M240i which is a coupe driven by its rear wheels and a 3-litre 6 cylinder engine. Instead, it’s more of a stretched M135i sharing the same 2-litre 4 cylinder engine and front wheel drive biased all wheel drive system (boo hiss). There will be a new M240i Coupe that will feature a 6 cylinder engine and will have the correct number of doors to wear the coupe name. Gran Coupe seems to skew more than just the number of doors in this instance.

The M235i and other 2 Series Gran Coupe models are, obviously, the result of the successes of the Audi A3 Saloon and Mercedes-Benz CLA models. Mercedes-Benz seem to have an appetite for niches and recently added an A Class Saloon to the range that makes no sense in my mind given that it looks like a slightly podgy CLA with no significant space gains. I’m sure the researchers at MB have their justifications…

Visually BMW were quick to flash up profile images of the, to my eyes, gorgeous 8 Series Gran Coupe overlaying sketches of the 2 Series Gran Coupe at the evenings press presentation. Again, to my eyes, one of these cars looks taught, sharp and rather tasty. Unfortunately the scaled down 2 Series doesn’t seem to wear the lines so well, they aren’t striking and melt away into the large and aesthetically heavy rear end.

Maybe it is a peach to drive? Well, the 1 Series is not available in China or the United States of America so it is up to the 2 Series Gran Coupe to whet the appetite of American and Chinese buyers. As a result, this is not just a stretched 1 Series. The suspension set up is softer to better accommodate poorer surfaces. The road route set up by BMW features a variety of road surfaces which the M235i I am piloting takes in its stride.

Make no mistake, the car is very good for doing the tasks that the vast majority of buyers will use their cars for, daily commutes and school runs. It is relatively spacious inside, comfortable, features tech that you would find in a 7 Series and it even feels plenty quick off the line with all wheel drive traction. 0-100 is done in 4.9 and accomplished courtesy of 306 horsepower and 450Nm.

My gripes relate to feedback and feel: there is, literally, none. Yes, the steering rack is quick and BMW have fitted a Torsen limited-slip differential in addition to the BMW Performance Control which ‘intelligently applies the brakes at the wheels on the inside of the bend before the slip threshold has been reached’ a bit like a McLaren does. As great as this sounds, the M235i GC is not engaging or particularly exciting to chuck into the bends.

Understeer still plagues the driving experience and when the front end is not pushing on, the car remains neutral and does not have you lusting to explore your favourite twisty roads with zeal. The M badge typically denotes more dynamic, and adrenaline fuelled drives. The synthesised exhaust noise is very clearly fake, more so than in other BMW models.

By no means does this mean that the 2020 M235i Gran Coupe is a bad car. If you are looking for a car to ferry your family around on short city journeys in comfort with great connectivity and convenience, this could well be the car for you. The M235i variant looks more imposing that lesser models and is well equipped. But if you’re looking for something with a little more zing, the Golf R is more dynamic and the Mercedes CLA 35 AMG is equally well appointed and feels more alive.

Geneva Motor Show 2020 Preview: What to Expect

If one thing remains a constant, it is that the Geneva Motor Show remains the biggest motor show in the world. The biggest manufacturers release the largest number of cars, it has been considered neutral ground for years.

Things were showing early signs of change this year with the likes of Lamborghini, Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, Opel, Maserati, Citreon, Peugeot, General Motors, Nissan, Mini and Mitsubishi all deciding to sit it out. Despite the surprisingly long list of no-shows, many of the biggest manufacturers remain committed to the Geneva Motor Show 2020 and the show is still expected to be the biggest of the year.

The Covid-19 virus has proved a stumbling block for car events this year too. The Beijing Motor Show 2020 is one victim. It is set to be postponed while China deals with the outbreak of the virus. Other events to have received the axe include the Mobile World Congress tech show in Barcelona and the Chinese Grand Prix.

Switzerland has no confirmed cases of the virus and organisers say that no manufacturer has pulled out. The show will, therefore, go ahead barring any last-minute changes.

Geneva Motor Show 2020 Details

A few important details:

Where: Palexpo, Route François-Peyrot 30, 1218 Le Grand-Saconnex, Geneva, Switzerland
Dates: 5-15 March 2020 (public days)
Opening Times: 10 am – 8 pm Monday – Friday, 9 am – 7 pm Saturday – Sunday

Aiways

Aiways U6ion

The first car on our list (it’s alphabetical…) is also the first Chinese all-electric SUV to make its way across to Europe. The Aiways U5 is one of a number of Chinese EV’s in development. It features a 190 hp electric motor with about 230 lb-ft of torque. It is sized to compete with cars like the Audi Q5, being of similar size. It is expected to go on sale this year, selling 2,000 units with a shift upwards to 50,000 units in the second year. Priced at less than 30,000 Euros, it should be an interesting prospect.

Aiways is also expected to debut a Coupe Crossover in the form of the Aiways U6ion. The U6ion has been developed with input from Roland Gumpert and ex-Pininfarina designer Ken Okuyama. The U6 is essentially a U5 but with flashier, sportier bodywork.

Aston Martin

Aston Martin Vantage Roadster Top Up

Aston Martin only have one confirmed release at the moment. They surprised us last year with a range of concept cars including the Aston Martin AM-RB 003 (now named the Valhalla), the Aston Martin Vanquish Vision Concept and the Aston Martin Lagonda All-Terrain. Nobody expected to see too much, but it soon became clear that Aston Martin was planning a surprise.

This year could be the same, although we only know that the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster will debut for the time being. The Aston Martin DBX will be sure to get attention. Aston’s make or break SUV needs to sell well and Geneva is to perfect place to showcase it. Otherwise, Aston Martin has been toying with the idea of a V12 powered speedster announced earlier this year.

Audi

Audi A3

Geneva will be a busy show for Audi, no different from normal! The biggest debut is the Audi A3, following hot on the heels of the Volkswagen Golf. The A3 will be based on the same platform as the Golf. It will get a more premium feel. It will be available as a five-door only

An Audi S3 is also expected to debut at the same time as the run of the mill models. The S3 will get the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol from the old car. Audi will fit a new sound actuator and it should be good for 310 hp and 400 Nm of torque.

The Audi E-Tron S Sportback, the Sportback version of Audi’s popular all-electric SUV, is set to debut with more power. At the moment, it is possible to buy a 50 or 55 engine with a single motor. The E-Tron S will get two motors, one for each wheel, alongside two single-speed gearboxes. This 2.5 tonne SUV will get 500 hp.

New versions of the Audi RS5 were also revealed last year, with subtle exterior changes. Audi will surely take the opportunity to highlight the improvements.

BAC Mono

100th BAC Mono - Denmark

The BAC Mono is due to receive a second generation. Believe it or not, the BAC Mono has been around since 2011. Little information has been released so far, except that the design we see next week will enter production in mid-2021. Teasers have so far suggested a bigger cockpit and more advanced materials such as graphene.

Bentley

Bentley Bacalar

Bentley has promised something quite special for the Geneva Motor Show 2020. The Bentley Bacalar was announced a few weeks ago, in the form of a teaser image. The full design is set to debut next week. We know already that it will be a bespoke project built by Mulliner and destined for a handful of collectors. Its inspiration will derive from the EXP 100 GT revealed last year as part of its centenary celebrations.

Bentley should also have an example of the Continental GT Mulliner Convertible special edition on display. The Mulliner fettled Convertible includes a Double Diamond front grille, a new Mulliner 22″ wheel design, new technical finishes and a bespoke Mulliner interior crafted entirely by hand, including 400,000 stitches.

BMW

Red BMW Concept 4

BMW’s 4 Series will be its biggest release of the Geneva Motor Show 2020. It will sport a controversial grille design, making it a make or break product for the Bavarian giant.

A BMW 330e PHEV and BMW X2 xDrive 25e will also debut, these entry-level, plug-in hybrid engines are sure to prove a sales success. BMW will have plenty on display.

Bugatti

Black Bugatti Chiron

Bugatti has confirmed that its 250th Chiron will be on display. The Bugatti Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive” is one of 20 Chiron Noire’s planned for production as a limited edition run.

The Edition Noire Sportive features a satin black carbon fibre body which extends into the interior, coupled with black leather. Chrome work has been blacked out and a Noire signature applied to the door jambs and under the rear spoiler.

Bugatti might also have a surprise in order, should we believe recent rumours. A Bugatti Chiron R might arrive to sit between the Chiron Sport and the Super Sport 300+. Bugatti might fit such a car with a more powerful engine and with improved aerodynamics. We will have to wait and see!

Czinger

Czinger’s new car, the Czinger 21C, will receive its world debut in Geneva. The Los Angeles based supercar debuts components that are 3D printed using a proprietary production process. A mid-mounted 2.8-litre V8 engine which works alongside two electric motors which power the front wheels.

In total, the Czinger 21C produces 1,250 hp, enough for an 8.1-second quarter mile, 100 km/h in 1.9 seconds, 300 km/h in 15 seconds and 400 km/h in 29 seconds. Czinger uses a seven-speed sequential transaxle gearbox. The 21C weighs just 1,183 kg (dry) with a track specification reducing it down to 1,151 kg.

Ferrari

Ferrari Roma

It’s not entirely clear what Ferrari will present at Geneva this year. The Roma is yet to receive a debut at an international motor show, it seems likely that it will feature prominently upon Ferrari’s stand.

Fisker

The reborn Fisker Ocean has been in development for some time. It has eco-credentials, being made from recycled, abandoned fishing nets and plastics from the ocean. It also uses an electronic drivetrain, with an 80 kWh capacity battery and a range of up to 300 miles. Power is rated at 300 hp. Due to the drip-feed nature of information about this car, we don’t yet know everything. Hopefully Geneva will shed some light.

Hispano Suiza Carmen Boulogne

Maguari HS1 GTC by Hispano Suiza

The reborn Hispano Suiza brand is said to launch its Carmen Boulogne special edition at Geneva this year. The company are yet to produce a production vehicle, yet the special edition will honour Hispano-Suiza racers who battled the streets of Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the north coast of France.

Koenigsegg

Koenigsegg Jesko

Koenigsegg is expected to unveil a special edition of the Jesko. This model will be kitted out with some choice upgrades to allow it to hit 500 km/h. The Koenigsegg is expected to be called the Mission 500 concept and will go head to head with the Chiron Super Sport 300+ which was clocked at 304.77 mph (490.48 km/h). It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what Koenigsegg aims for with the special edition model.

Although still a rumour, the Koenigsegg Jesko Mission 500 looks fairly certain. Koenigsegg has a bigger stand this year. This lead to rumours that a new model might arrive. Those rumours crystalised last week with talk of a Koenigsegg KG12 2+2 model.

The Koenigsegg KG12 hypercar is said to feature a 2+2 layout with larger doors to accommodate easier access. KG12 is likely to get a hybrid setup comprising a 2.0-litre, three-cylinder gasoline engine. Rumours have suggested it will use Koenigsegg’s FreeValve camless technology, and an electric motor. Combined, this setup could produce around 1,500 hp.

Lexus

Lexus LC Convertible

Lexus has been quite open about what it plans to bring to the Geneva Motor Show 2020. The Lexus LF-30 Electrified concept is expected to make a European debut alongside the Japanese brand’s first EV; the UX 300e. Petrolheads will be pleased to see the LC 500 Convertible.

McLaren

McLaren Elva Front

The official website for the Geneva Motor Show 2020 shows only the 720S Spider and the 600 LT as debuts for McLaren. In truth, nobody knows what McLaren might produce for the show. We’re hoping to see the McLaren Elva live and in the flesh. It is possible that McLaren might also display an example of the new Speedtail (deliveries begin soon!).

Rumours were circulating last year that McLaren planned to expand the Ultimate Series even further at Geneva, with the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model. There is talk of a McLaren 750LT too. It would be around the right time for the hardcore model.

Mercedes-Benz

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe Price

More big things from Mercedes-Benz, despite the recent demise of the S Class Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. We are expecting Mercedes-Benz to complete the revamp of its entry-level models with a brand new GLA Class. Revealed in December 2019, Geneva is likely to set the stage for the GLA 35 and 45 models. An E Class facelift is also expected.

Of interest to us is the anticipated launch of the Mercedes-AMG GT 73. The four-door GT is expected to debut a new powertrain for AMG. A direct answer to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. The AMG 4.0 litre V8 is set to be coupled to a rear-mounted electric motor and a lightweight battery. Power should be around 800 hp through all four wheels.

Elsewhere, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe was recently announced. It is powered by a 4.0 litre V8 together with an integrated EQ Boost starter-alternator, together they form a mild hybrid. Two versions are on offer, a standard 571 hp version and a 612 hp ‘S’ version.

Pagani

Pagani’s contribution to the Geneva Motor Show 2020 is the Pagani Imola. Dropping the Huayra name, the Imola is Pagani’s most extreme version of the Huayra chassis yet.

Pininfarina

Geneva Motor Show 2019

Pininfarina has already announced that its display at the Geneva Motor Show 2020 will focus on the company’s 90th-anniversary celebrations. It will show a special version of the Battista, the Pininfarina Battista Anniversario.

The Anniversario will be limited to five examples. The Battista, upon which it is based, is in the late stages of development. It features four electric motors at each wheel. Combined, these produce 1,900 hp. 100 km/h will take less than 2 minutes, 300 km/h in under 12 seconds and top speed should be around 350 km/h.

Porsche

It has been known for quite some time that Porsche plans the release of a brand new Porsche 992 Turbo at this year’s Geneva show. The iconic Turbo model returns for the latest generation. It should herald in a new era of performance 911’s, expect a GT3 to follow soon after.

The Turbo and Turbo S models are both expected to debut, retaining the outgoing model’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six. Power for the most potent 992 Turbo’s should be around 640 hp through an all-wheel-drive system. The Porsche 718 Boxster GTS and 718 Cayman GTS models should make the display too.

Rimac

Rimac C-Two

Electric hypercar specialists, Rimac, will display a production-ready version of the Rimac C Two. The company’s second hypercar will be built in higher numbers than its previous model, marking a significant ramp-up in production for the Croatian company.

The Rimac C Two’s statistics were staggering. The company claimed 1,914 horsepower from four independent, permanent-magnet electric motors fed by a 120-kWh battery pack. The statistics allow for a 1.85 second 60 mph sprint with a 413 km/h top speed. What’s more impressive still, is the claimed 550 km range!

Vega

Vega Geneva 2020

The Vega EVX hails from Sri Lanka. Not the first place you might think to find an all-electric supercar. Yet the Vega EVX makes for interesting reading. 804 hp and 760 Nm of torque in a package that weighs 2,090 kg allows for a 3.1 second 100 km/h sprint.

The 55-kWh lithium-ion battery provides a range of up to 300 km. From 2021, a more substantial 130-kWh battery will bump the range up to 750 km. Will it survive past the Geneva Motor Show 2020?

Volkswagen

Volkswagen Golf GTI Teaser

Volkswagen recently released a new Volkswagen Golf. Anticipation has grown for a GTI version which is expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2020. A GTD version should also debut at the same time.

The GTI will see mild updates to the 2.0-litre petrol engine, pushing it to 240 hp. The GTD is also set to retain its 2.0-litre diesel engine with a mild power boost to 200 hp. Both are likely to get mild hybrid assistance, in-line with the rest of the Golf range. As with the rest of the range, it is the interior tech which really counts though.

Bugatti Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive”: The 250th Chiron Revealed

It’s hard to believe that it has been almost 4 years since the Bugatti Chiron debuted. Earlier this week, Bugatti revealed its 250th Chiron, the Bugatti Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive”.

The Bugatti Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive” marks a staggering milestone for Bugatti. 250 cars have left the Bugatti factory with a further 150 already paid for, this means that fewer than 100 units are still available for sale.

The Edition Noire Sportive features a satin black carbon fibre body which extends into the interior, coupled with black leather. Chrome work has been blacked out and a Noire signature applied to the door jambs and under the rear spoiler.

The Bugatti Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive” is one of 20 Chiron Noire’s planned for production as a limited edition run. Each costs an additional 100,000 euros on top of the normal Chiron Sport.

Otherwise, this Chiron shares its looks with the Bugatti Chiron Sport. This means that it gets the Chiron Sport’s new wheel design and four-pipe exhaust deflector as well as its carbon fibre windscreen wipers.

Under the rear bonnet sits an 8.0-litre W16 powerplant producing 1,500 hp with 1,600 Nm of torque. The Sport is 18 kg lighter than the standard Chiron.

The Bugatti Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive” will be on display at the Bugatti stand at the Geneva Motor Show 2020 which starts the week after next.

Pagani Officially Announces Huayra-Based Pagani Imola

Italian hypercar specialists, Pagani, officially announced a new limited edition model yesterday. Pagani Imola’s have been emerging over the past couple of months with a car delivered to Los Angeles last year and another to Europe mid-way through last year. A third is under construction and rumoured to be headed to South Africa. With all five sold, Pagani waited until now to announce the Imola to the world!

The official press release confirms that Pagani has ditched the Huayra badge for the latest special edition. Pagani has instead opted to name the five-strong, limited edition model after the racetrack on which it was modelled and fine-tuned. It’s not just a name either. Pagani claims that the Imola has covered 16,000 km on track during development – the equivalent to about three times the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

So what’s different? In terms of the engine, the Imola continues to use the AMG-sourced V12 engine. It produces 827 hp with 1,100 Nm of torque. Power is still delivered, through an Xtrac 7-speed transverse AMT with electro-mechanical differential, to the rear wheels. Weight increases over the BC’s 1,218 kg rating to 1,246 kg likely due to the addition of extra aerodynamic components.

Pagani has reduced ground clearance so as to increase the downforce, taking advantage of the vehicle’s flat undercarriage. The Huayra’s active aerodynamics system is improved. The four mobile winglets have been improved. The suspension gains a set of electronically controlled active shock absorbers. A new SMART GAS system adds adaptive “dumpers” to reduce gearshift times.

The monocoque uses Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62 construction, identical to the Huayra BC models. Acquarello Light, a new bespoke painting system, reduces weight by 5kg. The Imola also uses 770 forged or CNC-machined components.

The looks are sure to prove controversial. The Imola continues Pagani’s trend towards brutal aerodynamic-focused design. An aggressive front splitter is matched to a huge rear diffuser. The rear spoiler has a more aesthetic design than the BC’s. The most dramatic feature is the ram air intake, a huge lump of carbon fibre placed over the rear deck!

Retromobile 2020: The Highlights & Gallery

Retromobile 2020 took place at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles between Feb 5th and 9th, a show celebrating key marques that shaped the current face of the automotive industry. From major French brands such as PSA, Renault and Bugatti to German brands which were represented by VW and Porsche. Others like Skoda and Alfa Romeo kicked off their anniversaries, with both celebrating over 100 years of existence.

Bugatti attended the 45th edition of Rétromobile with cars like the Type 35, the EB110 SS and more recent models like the Veyron. Meanwhile from Italy, Alfa Romeo kicked off their 110th birthday celebrations at the Paris show. Heritage models such as the Alfa Romeo 24HP (the first Alfa made), the 2020 Giulia and the 6C 1500 SS were on display. Last year at Retromobile, a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta sold for 16 million euros!

Aston Martin represented the British side with 3 cars namely the Aston Martin DBS, the DB4 Series I and the sensational AMV8 Vantage X-Pack. Polo Storico was launched last year by Lamborghini, a special department for maintaining heritage models. At Retromobile 2020, they showcased newly restored Miuras.

Porsche is currently fast tracking their electrification process and the Taycan is just the beginning. At Retromobile 2020, they showed the first ever hybrid car, the Semper Vivus which was revealed at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition. Of course the Taycan was also present to complete the centenary gap. Meanwhile, Classic meets Motorsport was the theme Porsche Classic used in an internal competition among classic workshops from Stuttgart. Each had a different model to showcase, restored to their own understanding of the competition.

Skoda is marking 125 years of existence and the anniversary celebrations kicked off at Retromobile 2020. The show would however not be complete without a series of VW Kombi buses, from the T1 to the T4…including a T2 Coca-Cola.

Land Rover Defender 110 Live at Chicago Auto Show 2020

Chicago – After it’s debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Land Rover brought it’s new Defender 110 to Chicago. While the first live unveiling of the new Jaguar F-Type was the big news on the Jaguar-Land Rover stand, the big Defender also attracted quite a bit of attention.

Standing guard over the display, looking particularly stately in silver, the Defender 110 bore a striking but more modern resemblance to it’s predecessor. It was equipped with several Land Rover accessories such as an exterior side-mounted gear carrier, an expedition roof rack, and a deployable roof ladder mounted to the side of the truck.

The full-leather interior provided a pleasant interior and seemed like it’d be comfortable for both day-to-day usage as well as longer trips.

The Defender 110 promises to be as engaging as the older models. We’re hoping to get our hands on one soon for a review.

Special Report: The Mercedes-AMG G 63 Is The Ultimate All-Rounder

What do Britney Spears, Kylie Jenner, Sylvester Stallone, Bradley Cooper, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and The Weeknd all have in common? Yes, they are all household names, but, they also all drive Mercedes-Benz G Wagons. The G was born back in 1979 and was an instant success. As I write this, Iran and the United States of Donald J Trump are locking horns and driving fuel prices through the roof. Thanks Iran, just what I needed to kick of my week with a G 63 AMG. In something of a coincidence, it was the Iranians that triggered the production of the G Class more than 40-years ago.

The Shah of Iran at the time suggested to the German manufacture that it would be interesting to see what a MB 4×4 would be like. Mercedes-Benz teamed up with Austrian military vehicle manufacturer, Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and started production of the “Geländewagen” (German for cross-country vehicle). This was not restricted to military use, but also civilian cruising.

The G Class was an instant hit, the price tag has always been as big as the boxy wheel arches and, as a result, the 4×4 has been an object of desire. The desire, price tag and power all grew to new levels in 1998 with the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz G 55 AMG, a V8 brute packing 358 horsepower. The foray into the AMG power for the G Class continued as the G 55 transitioned into the G 63. The on road handling continued to improve, but never to the detriment of the offroad capabilities. Every G Wagon model still has to pass the gruelling trail of conquering the Shöckl mountain in Austria.

As you would imagine, the G has been getting better with age, that being said, few generations have improved as much as the latest model that was updated in 2018. It won many awards including the GTspirit Car of The Year accolade. The engine is downsized to 4.0-litres but power and torque were significantly improved. Remarkably, the engineers were so confident in the improvements that they made to the chassis that they dropped a V8 closely related to that of the AMG GT R halo car into the 2.485 tonne brute. The power figure is identical, that’s right, 585 horsepower in a truck with a near vertical windscreen. Who said Germans don’t have a sense of humour?

I had a week to understand the G 63 in a plethora of different environments. I lived with it through the traffic plagued City of London and spent a weekend in the country to explore the AMG side of the G.

In the city the G looks monumental. London is a city that is home to exceptional wealth, G wagons, particularly 63s, are a common sight. That does not detract from how much presence they have. Against architecture, old and new, it looks imposing and modern, yet still harks back to Gs of old. Enough posing, what’s the G 63 AMG like to drive? Having driven every variant of the current model and almost all of the precious generation, I feel I am well placed to comment on just how vast the improvements are. It’s difficult to overstate just how much more dynamic and willing the latest offering is in comparison to its predecessors.

Having escaped the cities narrow streets and constricting speed limits at dawn, it was time to see what the G felt like when it could stretch its legs. Make no mistake, this is no Caterham or GT3 RS, the 63’s nose points to a sky under throttle like a cigarette racing boat with a sizeable bow wave. It leans in the corners, but the chassis can really handle the power. The steering is a revelation in comparison to the agricultural style system has been replaced by a modern, conventional rack and pinion and the difference could not be more significant. In conjunction with an independent suspension arrangement up front, there is a confidence that was absent in its predecessors that makes this an SUV that really can be driven enthusiastically. The trade-off is the suspension which is stiff, well engineered dampers take the edge off harsh bumps and holes, but it does not possess S Class rivalling levels of comfort.

In 63 guise, there is genuine speed mixed into the G Wagon recipe. The G 63 is a wonderful car, one that could be considered the ultimate all-rounder. I guarantee that any challengers will not be as iconic, capable in such a wide range of scenarios or cool to look at as the G 63. It is a living legend and one that laughs in the face of the endless new ‘SUVs’ that the markets are needlessly demanding. Don’t think about buying one, just do it.

Liquid Carbon Ford GT Revealed with Full Exposed Carbon

Chicago – Following their invitation-only unveiling of the exposed carbon fiber GT supercar, Ford rolled it out onto the floor of the Chicago Auto Show to give everyone a better look. Still as stunning as it was when unveiled, the brighter spotlights highlighted the intricate carbon fiber weave and made it even better. The look, known as “Liquid Carbon”, is one of two new available decorative schemes, the other being an updated Gulf Racing Livery with the number “6” rather than the number “9” to acknowledge the other LeMans winning GT-40. The Liquid Silver exposed carbon fiber appearance will be limited to 12 cars per year as a result of the handbuilt effort that has to go into it, getting the weave to line up and match everywhere.

The 2020 GT features several engine improvements carried over from Ford’s GT Mk II program. New aerodynamics increase airflow through the intercoolers by 50%, allowing them to run much longer at peak power, and engine updates and modifications that broaden the torque curve, making it more responsive. These changes increase the horsepower level by 13hp to a total of 660hp.

Suspension changes increase body control during dynamic transitional changes when the car is in Dynamic mode.

The run of the updated GT’s will end in 2022.

Bentley to Join 2020 GP Ice Race with Special Continental GT

Earlier this week, Bentley teased a photo of a modified Continental GT. The car sat on ice with multiple design additions and jacked suspension. Bentley has now released full details of its one-off Continental GT which has been prepared to compete at the famous GP Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria.

The special Bentley Continental GT will be piloted by Bentley’s first female racing driver, Catie Munnings. Bentley have a history on ice. The Continental GT set Ice Speed Records in 2007 and 2011. The Ice Race Continental GT hopes to emulate that success.

The livery reflects that of the Continental GT that broke the production car record at Pikes Peak in 2019. Underneath, the two cars are identical. They both share the 6.0 litre W12 engine with 635 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Both are capable of a 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds) and a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph).

Bentley have kept things pretty standard with a few choice upgrades. The Continental GT gets a rear roll cage, on-board fire suppression system, racing seats and harnesses. The Ice Race Continental GT also gets an increase to the nominal ride height to give greater ground clearance, arch extensions to accommodate a 15 mm increase in track width, studded Pirelli Scorpion Ice Zero2 tyres, a brace of Lazer high performance lights and a custom exhaust system from Akrapovic.

CES Automobitive Highlights 2020

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 is the first major show of the year for customer tech and a lot more. Since cars these days have more tech on board than your computer at home it is no surprise that more and more car manufacturers find their way to Las Vegas. We had a look at what the car manufacturers, suppliers and other tech companies had to offer in the automotive and picked our top highlights.

Sony wows the world with an electric car

The biggest news, by far, was that Sony had been working on autonomous car tech in relative secrecy. As you would expect, entertainment is firmly in the driving seat with this concept car. The Japanese behemoth isn’t expected to put the Vision S into production any time soon, but it is expected to offer its technology to the wider industry.

What Sony presented is a fully operational electric car, packed with technology. It is 5G-enabled and capable of over-the-air system updates. There are four main cameras around the outside of the vehicle – back, front and the two sides – all fitted with Sony’s high-end CMOS sensors and an in-car 360 Reality Audio system.

What’s most impressive though, is that a company with no history in the automotive segment (as a traditional manufacturer at least), can put together something so polished. The project is supported by automotive supplier Magna but even then we’re sure it had some of the traditional manufacturers scratching their heads.

Mercedes-Benz teases organic battery

Mercedes-Benz had a concept car to release this year. Tied with the upcoming Avatar 2 film, the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR previews the future of autonomous driving. There is no steering wheel, much like James Cameron’s characters, Mercedes-Benz believes that the vehicle will blend with the driver, recognising the human driver’s heartbeat and breath.

It gets a 110-kilowatt-hour electric motor that can produce 469 hp and a range of roughly 435 miles. But it is not the powertrain which makes this concept very interesting but the battery tech: The batteries are presented as a graphene-based concept. The organic material was discovered in 2004 and is currently the strongest material known to man. While no commercially available battery exists at this point, research has found that graphine batteries charge 12 times faster than lithium-ion batteries and can be produced and recycled in a very environmentally friendly manner. Perhaps this is the future?

Hyundai presents their vision of mobility with Uber

Hyundai and Uber’s joint vision for the future of the automotive looks suspiciously like an aeroplane. Developed under the title Uber Air Taxis, this concept is called the Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) model, S-A1.

[embedded content]

It has a cruising speed of up to 180 mph (290 km/h) at altitudes of roughly 300 to 600 metres above the ground. Trips will be limited to 60 miles on 100% electric propulsion. Each ‘car’ will seat four passengers.

Amazon sets aims to invade the automotive industry with Alexa and Fire TV

Amazon extended its Alexa and Fire TV offerings in the automotive industry. It announced new partnerships with Rivian and Lamborghini to bring Alexa into their vehicles. They join Ford, Audi, BMW, GM, and Toyota who had already announced partnerships. Even if you don’t buy one of these vehicles, the Echo Auto device will soon be available to make your car Alexa-ready.

Alexa gets new auto-specific skills including the ability to pay for gas at Exxon stations through the voice assistant. BMW and Fiat Chrysler add Fire TV systems to their vehicles too with the ability to stream TV shows through an onboard LTE connection.

ZF presents Level 2+ and Level 4 autonomous driving tech

ZF Level 2+ and Level Autonomous

ZF Automotive also presented new technology. The German giant is a market leader in autonomous driving technology. It presented an update on progress with its Level 2+ systems for consumer vehicles and Level 4 systems for commercial vehicles. The level 3 system hurdle which transfers responsibility in certain autonomous driving modes from the driver to the manufacturer is proving a big step to tackle with regulators around the world withholding manufacturers permission to homologate their systems. Level 2+ is a temporary solution that offers customers the most of the available tech with the restriction that the driver remains responsible at all time.

Its releases for the Level 2+ market focused on its coASSIST system, an affordable system which is expected to enjoy demand from a range of manufacturers. For a price of around $1,000 it offers feet-free and hands-free operation, automated lane change and overtaking, automated garage parking and route learning.

In the meantime ZF among others offers Level 4 systems for applications on non-public roads and private grounds like airports, factories and harbors. The demand for these full autonomous systems is stronger than ever and it is just a matter of time until we will see the first autonomous cars on the road.

600hp for the New Mercedes-AMG A45 S by Renntech

Renntech recently announced its tuning measures for the Mercedes-AMG A 45. The three stage package is currently available in an initial first stage, however, plans are afoot for a Stage 3 package in the near future which will boost power to 600 hp. In a hot hatch!

The Florida-based tuning firm is renowned for its tuning packages, exclusive to AMG models. It’s latest package is available for the latest A 45 4MATIC or A 45 S 4MATIC models. It’s the first tuning package for the current generation 45 model which has only recently began deliveries.

Renntech Mercedes-AMG A45

The first stage package is designed to improve the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with an increase in output to 475 hp and 575 Nm. The software tweaks should be available by mid-January with the final stages of testing underway. Customers at this stage can also opt for a modified diverter valve which adds the crackles AMG became known for, but which regulations have restricted in recent years.

Once Stage 1 is complete, Renntech has 550 hp and 600 hp options in the works, to follow in the course of the first quarter of 2020. These changes will involve modified turbocharger systems, a suitable exhaust system and an optional downpipe with sports catalytic converter. These options should become available in Spring.

Renntech Mercedes-AMG A45 Rear

Other modifications include a set of Renntech-designed 19 or 20 inch rims, manufactured by US specialists Vossen. A lowering module should also follow.

Special Report: One Last Drive – Bullitt Mustang

The word ‘icon’ is banded about a lot in the auto industry. In my mind, there are a few categories that are defined by the cars which have been sold for generations. Think SUV and Defender or G Wagon will, more likely than not, be projected in your mind. Supermini? Mini. Hot Hatch? Golf GTi. This is quickly morphing to a scenario not too dissimilar to laying flat on a red sofa in a psychiatrists office and being probed for the first word a blot of ink conjures. One more: Muscle Car? Ford Mustang.

Unlike the other aforementioned icons, I have never driven a Mustang. There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, it took 52 years for the Mustang to be sold in the UK, 2016 was a big year for the ‘Stang. Secondly, I didn’t fancy a Mustang for one of my fly-and-drive visits to the States as I feared losing my Mustang v plates to a 4-cylinder which, like my first time losing other v plates, would have been all to brief and underwhelming. I needed to wait for the right time, place and specification to captivate me enough to take the dive. The final drive of the year is always a special one for me. Most sane human beings would rather curl up next to the fire with their loved ones watching mushy Christmas movies than ever consider going for a drive for anything more than another bag of sprouts. I, on the other hand, can think of nothing worse that sitting on a sofa for days on end eating my weight in mince pies. Instead, I packed the, self made, mince pies into a plastic box and jumped into a car, one that I have been waiting decades to drive.

Why decades? Because of a movie titled ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ that I watched as a 6-year-old at the turn of the millennium. The movie itself was nothing to write home about. There were two stand out scenes – one featured Angelina Jolie (I’m sure you can imagine why) and the other, more relevantly, focused on a 1967 Shelby Mustang called Elanor. It was the hero car of the movie and one that captivated six and 60-year-olds alike, I guess the same can be said for Angelina.

Bear with me, I’m not rambling aimlessly, movie cars really do capture the hearts and minds of viewers. For me it was Gone in 60 Seconds, for the generation of movie goers in 1968, it was Bullitt, the hero car was a Mustang. Much like Gone in 60 Seconds, the movie itself was never destined to win Oscars, but, there were a couple of scenes that have been viewed millions of times on YouTube (add to the tally by watching below).

[embedded content]

Enough of the old, what’s the deal with the movie talk? Well, the Mustang I’m buckling into is a tribute to the Bullitt car you see above. The link is obvious – the wheels, Highland Green paint, distinct lack of pony badges and cue ball gear shifter have all be copied and pasted onto the 2019 Mustang. It is available with a Mustang ordered with the 5.0-litre V8 (no EcoBoost silliness here) with the manual box and not as a convertible – the good stuff then. This was the perfect opportunity to drive my first Mustang. Back to the mince pies, they were secured on the lap of my copilot, an equally deranged human that suggested we compliment the mince pies with a drive to feed a reindeer herd a few hours drive out of London.

The drive involved long flowing sections of well paved ‘highway’ where the V8 could sing, and twisty country roads where the chassis balance and gearbox could be put to the test. The Bullitt package is not just cosmetic. Adding to the appeal are a plethora of parts that you cannot configure on any other Mustang. Power is up to 453bhp, part due to the intake manifold from the GT350 which has the added benefit of making the Mustang sound like a V8 NASCAR. Furthermore, ticking the Bullitt box adds the Ford’s GT Performance Package which, apparently, improves chassis control significantly courtesy of suspension springs that have been lowered and stiffened by another few degrees, beefed-up anti-roll bars, recalibrated dampers and a Torsen limited-slip differential. Tasty. Magnetorheological adaptive dampers are fitted to the car I am driving and a noticeable difference can be felt through the modes.

How did it feel on the road to visiting Rudolph and co? Refreshing, if you’re a regular reader you’ll know I’m that guy raving about how sublime Porsches are and how the feel and feedback of a McLaren is so delightful. Jumping into a naturally aspirated, manually operated American muscle car is a far cry from the usual for me and it was an unforgettable experience. There is a raw, old school feel. There is immense character and a connection that comes with less sophisticated cars.

The Bullitt Mustang is one of the best examples of that. The traction control seems to be too busy to stop you from pulling massive angles out of every junction. The cold and salt paved streets at this time of year mean you can feel the chassis shuffling underneath you and there is so much confidence in its abilities. The gearbox is fabulous, the cue ball is gorgeous and the rev-matched downshift bring a smile to your face and the revs yelp. The digital dash is tremendous and there a host of layouts to pick from. The Recaros hug you tight and are immensely comfortable and are almost good enough to make up for the questionable build quality, poor plastics and terrible infotainment system. Then again, the Mustang is a unique offering and I am just pleased to be able to drive a manual V8 free of turbochargers – the infotainment could be running Windows ’95 and I would still be grinning from ear-to-ear. The noise from the exhaust is bewitching in race mode and eggs you on to chase the redline.

The car does feel massive on tight British country lanes but the car still feels reasonably nimble. Big open motorways are where it really can be set free. The engine isn’t the most responsive below 3,000, you need to wind it up and it really is explosive in the mid-range. The gearbox, though physically great to shift, needs to be handled with patience. The engine does not like to be rushed, this is not a Cayman GT4 that relishes a lightening quick shift.

The Bullitt Mustang really is a unique proposition and like nothing I have ever driven before. It brims with character and presents endless joy. You’ll want to find any excuse to drive it down your favourite road at any time of day. It is a very special car, one that will make you feel better than cars that cost two or three times the price. It feels even better than it looks.

P.S. Ford, please make an Elanor edition, I’ll be ready with my deposit.

The Élégance model gets black exposed carbon fibre bodywork. The Bugatti “Macaron” emblem sits at the centre of the grille, made of solid silver and refined with black enamel. The callipers are also finished in black with Caractère wheels. The signature line is milled from solid metal with a matt polished aluminium finish. Both the rear-view mirror and engine cover are also finished in black carbon and polished aluminium.

Inside, the theme is dark black. Only the “Inner Signature Line” is finished in silk-matt aluminium to break the shadows. The inscription “Noire” appears on the door sills and on the outside of the centre console while a model designation badge is applied to the centre armrest.

The Chiron Noire Sportive gets a matt finish to its carbon bodywork. The exterior trim elements, the C-shaped Bugatti signature line, the wheels, front spoiler and radiator grille are all matt black. The exhaust tips are black and the engine cover too. Inside, everything is black including the inner C-line, switches, push-buttons and rotary knobs on the dashboard, steering wheel, centre console and door handles.

The 20 Chiron Noire’s will be available for the Chiron Sport at an extra charge of 100,000 euros.
