Giro Aether MIPS Helmet
Save $45: For those in the know in the helmet world, MIPS is a pretty big deal. Short for “multi-directional impact protection system,” the label applies to helmets featuring a plastic liner that acts as a slip plane to redistribute the sort of rolling impacts that characterize many bike accidents. The next evolution is MIPS Spherical, where two layers of foam on the outside of the helmet mimic the sliding effect without the sacrifices in fit and ventilation that traditional MIPS brings.
All of which is to say, MIPS Spherical is pretty cutting-edge protective stuff, usually only available at a premium, such as the $370 cost of a Giro Aether MIPS Helmet. The favorite of a number of Tour de France riders, the helmet also boasts a laser-cut shell seamlessly fused to the EPS foam, Roc Loc 5 Plus easy adjustability and 11 deep vents for optimal ventilation. Given the material’s natural heat conductivity, copper coils heat water more quickly than machines using steel or other methods (the only machine we’ve tested that brews faster is Breville’s Precision Brewer). The ability to take the whole thing apart is also unique, and it allows for troubleshooting and fixing at home rather than losing your source of coffee to the mail for a few weeks (it’s also great for cleaning the machine).

I have the non-hooded version of this jacket, and it’s just about perfect for fall weather — and with proper layering, winter weather as well.

Kershaw Knockout Damascus
Save $88: Damascus steel isn’t just for show. Knives that use it are most obviously characterized by the undulating patterns in their blades, but the involved process of making it — a century’s old method involving the layering of various types of metals — is known to create a final product that’s also incredibly strong. Utilized in a pocket knife, it makes for a tool that’s unique in both aesthetics and effectiveness (and, typically, expensive).
An excellent example of the application of Damascus steel is Kershaw’s Knockout. Kershaw conceived the EDC folder as uncompromising; it uses the company’s Sub-Frame Lock, in which a section of a handle is cut out to make room for a steel insert that bends inward when the blade is deployed to hold it in place, like a traditional frame lock. That construction allowed Kershaw to use aluminum for the rest of the handle, keeping the overall build lightweight yet sturdy.
