When you think about American heritage, two brands at the top of your mind will invariably be Hamilton and Schott NYC. The heritage watchmaker and the iconic leather jacket company both supplied gear to the US Armed Forces during WWII, becoming symbols of military-style. Nowadays, online retailers and brands typically start offering Black Friday deals anytime during the week of Thanksgiving, and sometimes earlier.

Make a Plan: Buying things just because they’re on sale is a very slippery slope and one that retailers and brands are hoping to capitalize on during these shopping holidays. So go in with a gameplan and stick to it. A great place to start is by following our holiday gift guides. After spending the entire year rating and reviewing products, our staff has a keen sense of what the best gifts to give are. We’ll be publishing new guides through the month of November.

Set Up Price Alerts: Creating price alerts is a tactic that will directly help with not buying into the hype because you’ll know when the item you’re in the market for has a price drop. Camelcamelcamel is a great one for Amazon and Honey is a solid one for all other retailers. Both offer browser plug-ins that make them easy and effective to use. Signing up for a particular retailer or brand’s newsletter (hint hint: our Deals email, too) is always a good way to get advance notice of upcoming sales and exclusive offers as well.

Look for Retailers Who Price Match Competitors: Remember when you could bring in a physical advertisement from a competitor and that retailer would match the price? It’s beginning to happen more and more online now even. Price matching competitors is a tactic that the likes of Walmart is putting lots of weight behind this year as they look to match nearly every deal Amazon will offer up.

Utilize Cashback When It Makes Sense: Making the most of cashback options is a smart way to shop in general. Cashback services like BeFrugal, Rakuten, Honey and others can be an easy way to earn money back on top of savings. There are also a host of retailer credit cards that have great cashback programs — Amazon Prime Rewards, Macy’s and Walmart Rewards are all solid ones. But don’t just dive into getting a new credit card just to score special savings or get cashback. You need to evaluate that decision on a holistic credit view and philosophy. That said, if you were planning on signing up for one and are looking to capitalize on holiday offers, it’s one of the best times of the year to do so.

NOMOS Glashütte has released its latest watches just in time for the holidays. Both models are from the brand’s Tangente line — one with a 35mm case and the other a tick larger at 38mm case. Both are as sleek and minimalist as ever, with striking midnight blue dials and gleaming precious metal accents: gold hands sweep across the smaller model, while silver hands show the time on the larger one. Under the dial is the classic NOMOS handcrafted and manually-wound Alpha caliber, which keeps on ticking reliably and precisely — you only need to wind it once every two days. The two new Tangente models come with a velour leather strap — pale beige for the 35 mm model, dark anthracite for the 38 mm — which is slender and elegant. Nowadays, online retailers and brands typically start offering Black Friday deals anytime during the week of Thanksgiving, and sometimes earlier.

Skip the Lines: Do you really need that TV the night of Thanksgiving? Waiting in line, potentially in the cold, is never the way to be a smarter holiday shopper. That’s not to say you shouldn’t shop brick-and-mortar though, because you most certainly should be during the holiday shopping season — Small Business Saturday is a great day for that. But keep in mind that lots of bigger brands and retailers that offer online shopping will almost certainly put their “doorbuster” Black Friday deals online at some point.

Make a Plan: Buying things just because they’re on sale is a very slippery slope and one that retailers and brands are hoping to capitalize on during these shopping holidays. So go in with a gameplan and stick to it. A great place to start is by following our holiday gift guides. After spending the entire year rating and reviewing products, our staff has a keen sense of what the best gifts to give are. We’ll be publishing new guides through the month of November.

Set Up Price Alerts: Creating price alerts is a tactic that will directly help with not buying into the hype because you’ll know when the item you’re in the market for has a price drop. Camelcamelcamel is a great one for Amazon and Honey is a solid one for all other retailers. Both offer browser plug-ins that make them easy and effective to use. Signing up for a particular retailer or brand’s newsletter (hint hint: our Deals email, too) is always a good way to get advance notice of upcoming sales and exclusive offers as well.

Look for Retailers Who Price Match Competitors: Remember when you could bring in a physical advertisement from a competitor and that retailer would match the price? It’s beginning to happen more and more online now even. Price matching competitors is a tactic that the likes of Walmart is putting lots of weight behind this year as they look to match nearly every deal Amazon will offer up.

Utilize Cashback When It Makes Sense: Making the most of cashback options is a smart way to shop in general. Cashback services like BeFrugal, Rakuten, Honey and others can be an easy way to earn money back on top of savings. There are also a host of retailer credit cards that have great cashback programs — Amazon Prime Rewards, Macy’s and Walmart Rewards are all solid ones. But don’t just dive into getting a new credit card just to score special savings or get cashback. You need to evaluate that decision on a holistic credit view and philosophy. That said, if you were planning on signing up for one and are looking to capitalize on holiday offers, it’s one of the best times of the year to do so.
