Italdesign Zerouno Roadster headed for Geneva Motor Show

It’s not often that Italian design houses sell cars under their own name. Sure, the name Zagato has been tacked onto Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo and Lancia coupes, but it’s rarer for the design house to act as the manufacturer. The last Fiat X1/9s were sold as Bertones, and late, 1980s 124 Spiders were sold as the Pininfarina Spidereuropa, but Italdesign hasn’t sold any cars of their own – until the Zerouno, that is. The company wants to introduce an own-brand model every year on from 2017; the coupe version of the Huracan-related Zerouno was the first.

Italdesign has now confirmed that there will be a convertible version of the Zerouno, and that it will be seen at the Geneva Motor Show. The coupe was only made as a five-unit production run, and it’s likely that there won’t be too many topless versions built. Italdesign is 50 years old this year, and it’s up to the Zerouno roadster to be displayed as a celebratory model. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed either, but reports say the base price is likely to top $1.8 million, and it’ll easily go past two million dollars nicely equipped.

For that money you get exclusivity as well as a 5.2-liter V10 engine good for 205 miles per hour and a 3-second 0-60 blast. Zerounos are all-wheel-drive, with Audi/Lamborghini DNA baked in thanks to the company’s ties to Audi-owned Lamborghini.

High-performance Audi R8 prototype could be new R8 GT

The Audi R8, which has a 610-horsepower Plus version, isn’t exactly in dire need of additional performance. But based on these new spy photos, that appears to be exactly what Audi is working on, and we won’t try to dissuade them from making it. It may even be a return of the very limited production, hardcore, R8 GT, last seen in 2012.

There aren’t many changes to the exterior of the car, which does hurt the argument that this could be an R8 GT. The front fascia and flanks appear to be identical to the normal R8 in fact. The old R8 GT at least featured a couple extra canards at the front for better aerodynamics.

At the back, the car seems to have the same wing as the R8 Plus, which is similar in shape and size as the old R8 GT. The rear grilles also look different. The actual openings appear larger and closer to the rear wing, and the mesh pattern looks as though it might extend behind the rear license plate. The diffuser is also new, and it looks a bit wider. It also now encompasses oval exhaust tips. Oval tips have frequently been a cue on RS Audis, so perhaps this R8 could carry an RS badge. Our spy photographer tells us the exhaust was very loud, too.

Since this prototype doesn’t look vastly different from the current R8, we’re expecting that it won’t be a terribly long wait to see the final product. Perhaps one to two years. We hope.

The upcoming Audi R8 e-tron set the fastest lap time of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife for a produced-based electric car back in June. With German race car driver Markus Winkelhock behind the wheel, the electric supercar’s final time was 8:09.099 and here’s the video highlighting the glorious moment.

The Audi R8 e-tron’s power comes from two electric motors, one at each axle with a combined output of 308 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque giving it a 0-60 mph time of just 4.6 seconds and limited top speed of 124 mph – to achieve the fastest lap time, however, the R8 e-tron needed to have its speed limit raised to 155 mph.

The Audi R8 e-tron is still in the prototype testing phase but is set to go on sale at the end of this year. Production will be limited and produced in a small facility at Audi’s main plant in Neckarsulm, in the south of Germany. Because of limited production, the electric supercars will most likely be pricey – rumor is suggesting they could be the most expensive model in Audi’s portfolio to date.

Seven years ago Audi launched the R8, and in that time the two-seat sports car has undergone several changes including adding an R8 Spyder, optional V10 and GT model to the R8 family. Well, Audi decided that it was time that the R8 got a full-on refresh by introducing the new 2012 R8 lineup. Check out the specs, video and gallery below.

Specs

Seven-speed S-tronic transmission – an upgrade from the R-tronic – utilizes two mult-plate clutches
S-tronic is actually faster to 60 miles per hour by three-tenths of a second
Six-speed manual is offered
Flagship V10 Plus model
Redesigned LED headlights and taillights
Revised front bumper and grille
Larger diffuser
New circular tailpipes
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic like that used on the R8 GT
Carbon fiber front splitter, mirrors, side blades, rear diffuser and lining for the engine compartment 5.2-liter V10 producing 550 horsepower and 398 pound-feet torque.

European models start rolling off the line at the end of 2012. No mention of U.S. availability or pricing yet.
